faḍlu al-dhikri

The Merit of Remembrance

(lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu) hiya ʾafḍalu al-dhikri [ت], wa-hiya ʾafḍalu al-ḥasanāti [أ].

“There is no deity but Allah” is the best form of remembrance [ت], and it is the best of good deeds [أ].

«ʾasʿadu al-nāsi bishafāʿatī yawma al-qiyāmati man qālahā mukhliṣan min qalbihi ʾaw nafsihi» [خ].

“The person happiest to receive my intercession on the Day of Resurrection will be the one who says it sincerely from his heart or soul” [خ].

«yakhruju mina al-nāri man qālahā wa-fī qalbihi waznu shaʿīratin min khayrin ʾaw min ʾīmānin, wa-yakhruju mina al-nāri man qālahā wa-fī qalbihi waznu burratin min khayrin ʾaw min ʾīmānin, wa-yakhruju mina al-nāri man qālahā wa-fī qalbihi waznu dharratin min khayrin ʾaw min ʾīmānin» [خ، م، ت].

“Whoever said it with the weight of a barley grain of goodness or faith in his heart will be brought out of the Fire; whoever said it with the weight of a grain of wheat of goodness or faith in his heart will be brought out of the Fire; and whoever said it with the weight of a speck of goodness or faith in his heart will be brought out of the Fire” [خ، م، ت].

«mā min ʿabdin qālahā thumma māta ʿalā dhālika ʾillā dakhala al-jannata, wa-ʾin zanā wa-ʾin saraqa, wa-ʾin zanā wa-ʾin saraqa, wa-ʾin zanā wa-ʾin saraqa» [م].

“No servant says it and then dies holding to it without entering Paradise, even if he committed adultery and stole, even if he committed adultery and stole, even if he committed adultery and stole” [م].

«jaddidū ʾīmānakum»; qīla: yā rasūla Allāhi, wa-kayfa nujaddidu ʾīmānanā? qāla: «ʾakthirū min qawli: lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu» [أ، ط].

“Renew your faith.” He was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how do we renew our faith?” He said, “Say often: There is no deity but Allah” [

laysa lahā dūna Allāhi ḥijābun ḥattā takhluṣa ʾilayhi [ت], qawluhā lā yatruku dhanban, wa-lā yushbihuhā ʿamalun [مس].

There is no barrier between it and Allah until it reaches Him [ت]. Uttering it leaves no sin unerased, and no deed is comparable to it [مس].

«law ʾanna ʾahla al-samāwāti al-sabʿi wa-l-ʾaraḍīna al-sabʿa fī kiffatin, wa-(lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu) fī kiffatin, mālat bihim» [حب، س، ر].

“If the inhabitants of the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed in one pan of a balance, and ‘There is no deity but Allah’ in the other, it would outweigh them” [حب، س، ر].

«mā qālahā ʿabdun qaṭṭu mukhliṣan, ʾillā futiḥat lahu ʾabwābu al-samāʾi ḥattā tufḍiya ʾilā al-ʿarshi, mā ujtunibati al-kabāʾiru» [ت، س، مس].

“No servant ever says it sincerely without the gates of heaven being opened for it until it reaches the Throne, provided the major sins are avoided” [

«lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahu al-mulku, wa-lahu al-ḥamdu, yuḥyī wa-yumītu, wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun. man qālahā ʿashra marrātin kāna kaman ʾaʿtaqa ʾarbaʿata ʾanfusin min waladi ʾismāʿīla» [خ، م، ت، س، أ].

“There is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise; He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. Whoever says it ten times will be like one who freed four souls from the descendants of Ishmael” [خ، م، ت، س، أ].

wa-marratan, kaʿitqi nasamatin [أ، مص].

Saying it once is like freeing one slave [

wa-miʾata marratin, kānat lahu ʿadla ʿashri riqābin, wa-kutibat lahu miʾatu ḥasanatin, wa-muḥiyat ʿanhu miʾatu sayyiʾatin, wa-kānat lahu ḥirzan mina al-shayṭāni, wa-lam yaʾti ʾaḥadun bimithlin mimmā jāʾa bihi ʾillā ʾaḥadun ʿamila ʾakthara min dhālika [عو].

Saying it one hundred times brings the reward of freeing ten slaves; one hundred good deeds are recorded for him, one hundred evil deeds are erased from him, and it is a safeguard for him from Satan. No one will bring anything better than what he has brought except someone who did more than that [عو].

hiya allatī ʿallamahā nūḥun ibnahu, fa-ʾinna al-samāwāti law kānat fī kiffatin larajaḥat bihā, wa-law kānat ḥalqatan laḍammathā [مص].

This is the declaration that Noah taught his son. If the heavens were placed in one pan of a balance, this declaration would outweigh them; and if the heavens formed a ring, it would encompass them [مص].

«lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu, wa-Allāhu ʾakbaru, kalimatāni, ʾiḥdāhumā laysa lahā nihāyatun dūna al-ʿarshi, wa-l-ʾukhrā tamlaʾu mā bayna al-samāʾi wa-l-ʾarḍi» [ط].

“‘There is no deity but Allah’ and ‘Allah is the Greatest’ are two phrases: one has no stopping point short of the Throne, and the other fills all that lies between heaven and earth” [ط].

wa-humā maʿa: (wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata ʾillā bi-llāhi al-ʿaliyyi al-ʿaẓīmi) mā ʿalā al-ʾarḍi ʾaḥadun yaqūluhā, ʾillā kaffarat ʿanhu khaṭāyāhu, wa-law kānat mithla zabadi al-baḥri [ت، س].

Together with “There is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent,” no one on earth says them without having his sins expiated, even if they are like the foam of the sea [ت، س].

«mā min ʾaḥadin yashhadu ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu, wa-ʾanna muḥammadan rasūlu Allāhi, ʾillā ḥarramahu Allāhu ʿalā al-nāri» - ḥadīthu muʿādhin - qāla: yā rasūla Allāhi, ʾafalā ʾukhbiru al-nāsa fa-yastabshirū? qāla: «ʾidhan yattakilū». wa-ʾakhbara bihā muʿādhun ʿinda mawtihi taʾaththuman [خ، م].

“No one testifies that there is no deity but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah without Allah forbidding the Fire to touch him.” In the hadith of Mu‘adh, he asked, “O Messenger of Allah, shall I not tell the people so that they may rejoice?” He replied, “Then they would rely upon it.” Mu‘adh disclosed it at the time of his death for fear of concealing knowledge and thereby sinning [خ، م].

«man shahida bihā ka-dhālika, ḥarramahu Allāhu ʿalā al-nāri» [م، ت].

“Whoever bears this testimony in that manner, Allah will forbid the Fire to touch him” [م، ت].

wa-ḥadīthu al-biṭāqati allatī tathqulu bi-l-tisʿati wa-l-tisʿīna sijillan, kullu sijillin maddu al-baṣari: «ʾashhadu ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu, wa-ʾashhadu ʾanna muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa-rasūluhu» [ق، حب، مس].

And there is the hadith of the card that outweighs ninety-nine scrolls, each scroll stretching as far as the eye can see: “I testify that there is no deity but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger” [ق، حب، مس].

«man qāla: ʾashhadu ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu waḥdahu, wa-ʾanna muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa-rasūluhu, wa-ʾanna ʿīsā ʿabdu Allāhi wa-ibnu ʾamatihi, wa-kalimatuhu ʾalqāhā ʾilā maryama, wa-rūḥun minhu, wa-ʾanna al-jannata ḥaqqun, wa-l-nāra ḥaqqun. ʾadkhalahu Allāhu min ʾayyi ʾabwābi al-jannati al-thamāniyati shāʾa» [م، خ، س].

“Whoever says: I testify that there is no deity but Allah alone; that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; that Jesus is the servant of Allah and the son of His bondwoman, His word which He cast to Mary, and a spirit from Him; and that Paradise is true and the Fire is true—Allah will admit him through whichever of the eight gates of Paradise he wishes” [م، خ، س].

«man shahida ʾan lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, wa-ʾanna muḥammadan ʿabduhu wa-rasūluhu, wa-ʾanna ʿīsā ʿabdu Allāhi wa-rasūluhu, wa-ibnu ʾamatihi, wa-kalimatuhu ʾalqāhā ʾilā maryama, wa-rūḥun minhu,

“Whoever testifies that there is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner; that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger; that Jesus is the servant and Messenger of Allah, the son of His bondwoman, His word which He cast to Mary, and a spirit from Him;

wa-l-jannatu ḥaqqun, wa-l-nāru ḥaqqun. ʾadkhalahu Allāhu al-jannata ʿalā mā kāna min ʿamalin, ʾaw: min ʾabwābi al-jannati al-thamāniyati ʾayyahā shāʾa» [خ، م، س].

and that Paradise is true and the Fire is true—Allah will admit him to Paradise in accordance with whatever deeds he has done, or, according to another wording, through whichever of the eight gates of Paradise he wishes” [خ، م، س].

kāna ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam yaqūlu: «lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu waḥdahu, ʾaʿazza jundahu, wa-naṣara ʿabdahu, wa-ghalaba al-ʾaḥzāba waḥdahu, fa-lā shayʾa baʿdahu» [خ، م، س].

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say, “There is no god but Allah alone. He strengthened His army, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates by Himself; there is nothing after Him” [خ، م، س].

ḥadīthu al-ʾaʿrābiyyi: ʿallimnī kalāman ʾaqūluhu. qāla: «qul: lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, Allāhu ʾakbaru kabīran, wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāhi kathīran,

In the hadith of the Bedouin, he said, “Teach me words that I may say.” He replied, “Say: There is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner; Allah is supremely great; abundant praise belongs to Allah;

wa-subḥāna Allāhi rabbi al-ʿālamīna, lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata ʾillā bi-llāhi al-ʿaliyyi [د] al-ʿaẓīmi al-ʿazīzi al-ḥakīmi, Allāhumma ighfir lī, wa-irḥamnī, wa-ihdinī, wa-urzuqnī» [م].

glory be to Allah, Lord of the worlds; there is no power and no strength except through Allah, the Most High [د], the Magnificent, the Mighty, the Wise. O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, guide me, and provide for me” [م].

«man qāla: subḥāna Allāhi wa-biḥamdihi. kutibat lahu ʿashran, wa-man qālahā ʿashran kutibat lahu miʾatan, wa-man qālahā miʾatan kutibat lahu ʾalfan, wa-man zāda zādahu Allāhu» [ت، س].

“Whoever says, ‘Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him,’ will have ten good deeds recorded for him. Whoever says it ten times will have one hundred recorded for him; whoever says it one hundred times will have one thousand recorded for him; and whoever does more, Allah will give him more” [ت، س].

«man qālahā miʾata marratin ḥuṭṭat khaṭāyāhu wa-ʾin kānat mithla zabadi al-baḥri» [عو].

“Whoever says it one hundred times will have his sins erased, even if they are like the foam of the sea” [

wa-«hiya ʾafḍalu al-kalāmi alladhī iṣṭafā Allāhu limalāʾikatihi» [م، عو].

And “it is the best speech that Allah selected for His angels” [

«hiya allatī ʾamara nūḥun bihā ibnahu, fa-ʾinnahā ṣalātu al-khalqi, wa-tasbīḥu al-khalqi, wa-bihā yurzaqu al-khalqu» [مص].

“It is what Noah instructed his son to say, for it is the prayer of creation and the glorification of creation, and through it creation receives its provision” [

“Whoever says it will have a tree planted for him in Paradise” [ر].

«man hālahu al-laylu ʾan yukābidahu (1), ʾaw bakhila bi-l-māli ʾan yunfiqahu, ʾaw jabuna ʿani al-ʿaduwwi ʾan yuqātilahu, fa-lyukthir minhā, fa-ʾinnahā ʾaḥabbu ʾilā Allāhi min jabali dhahabin tunfiquhu fī sabīli Allāhi» [ط].

“Whoever is daunted by the night and unable to endure it (1), too stingy to spend his wealth, or too fearful to fight the enemy should say it often, for it is dearer to Allah than a mountain of gold spent in the cause of Allah” [ط].
