The Waẓīfa of Imam Aḥmad Zarrūq

Risālatu l-imāmi Aḥmada Zarrūqini l-muṣaddiratu li-l-waẓīfati

The Prefatory Letter of Imam Aḥmad Zarrūq

bismi Allāhi al-raḥmāni al-raḥīmi

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful.

al-ḥamdu li-llāhi, wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata ʾillā bi-llāhi.

All praise belongs to Allah. There is no power to turn away from wrong and no strength to do right except through Allah.

min ʿabdi Allāhi al-faqīri ʾilā raḥmatihi, ʾaḥmada bni ʾaḥmada bni muḥammadi bni ʿīsā al-burnusiyyi al-shahīri bi-«zarrūqin», ʾaṣlaḥa Allāhu ḥālahu.

From Allah’s servant, poor and in need of His mercy: Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿĪsā al-Burnusī, known as Zarrūq, may Allah set his state aright.

ʾilā al-sādati al-fuqarāʾi wa-l-ʾaḥibbāʾi fī Allāhi taʿālā:

To the honored spiritual seekers and the beloved friends in Allah Most High:

sayyidī ʿabdi al-ʿazīzi al-maghrāwiyyi, kāna Allāhu lahu fī al-dunyā wa-l-ʾākhirati; waḥabībihi fī Allāhi taʿālā, al-faqīri ʿabdi al-maliki bni saʿīdin, ʾasʿadahu Allāhu bimarḍātihi, wanawwara qalbahu, wakafāhu sharra nafsihi;

my master ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Maghrāwī, may Allah care for him in this world and the next; and his beloved brother in Allah Most High, the poor servant ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Saʿīd, may Allah grant him happiness through His good pleasure, illumine his heart, and protect him from the evil of his own self;

thumma sāʾiri al-ʾikhwāni mimman ʾarāda al-dukhūla fī dāʾirati al-ʾaṣḥābi.

and then to all the other brothers who wish to enter the circle of companions.

salāmun ʿalaykum waraḥmatu Allāhi wabarakātuhu.

Peace be upon you, and Allah’s mercy and blessings.

ʾammā baʿdu, faqad balaghanī minkum kitābun yataḍammanu kamāla al-widādi, waḥusna al-ẓanni, wajamīla al-iʿtiqādi.

To proceed: a letter from you has reached me, expressing complete affection, a good opinion, and beautiful confidence.

wa-ʾakhbartum fīhi bi-ʾashwāqikum ʾilaynā, wa-nʿiṭāfikum bikunhi al-himmati ʿalaynā.

In it you told me of your longing for us and of the full force of your spiritual concern turning toward us.

fa-ʾasʾalu Allāha ʾan yuballigha niyyātikum, wayanfaʿanā biṣāliḥi maqṣidikum; wa-ʾillā fanaḥnu ʿuṣātun mudhnibūna, naṭlubu ʿafwa Allāhi fī kulli ḥālin, wanatamassaku bi-ʾadhyāli al-sādati min ʾahli al-kamāli.

I ask Allah to bring your intentions to fulfillment and to benefit us through the goodness of your purpose. Otherwise, we are disobedient sinners: in every state we seek Allah’s pardon and cling to the hems of the masters among the people of spiritual completeness.

wayā ʾakhī, ṭalabtum minnī ʾidkhāla fulānin wafulānin fī al-dāʾirati, walaysa dhalika lī, wa-lā bi-khtiyāri nafsī al-ʿāṣiyati al-ḥāʾirati; walakin qul lahum: yaqūlu lakum:

My brother, you asked me to admit this person and that person into the circle. That is not mine to grant, nor is it subject to the choice of my disobedient, bewildered self. Rather, say to them, ‘He tells you this:’

ʿalaykum bi-l-lajaʾi ʾilā Allāhi taʿālā fī maqāṣidikum, wadaʿū al-ḥawla wa-l-quwwata warāʾa ẓuhūrikum.

Take refuge in Allah Most High in all that you seek, and cast every claim to power and strength behind your backs.

fa-lā maljaʾa mina Allāhi ʾillā ʾilayhi, wa-lā ʿāṣima min ʾamrihi ʾillā man raḥima wataʿaṭṭafa ʿalayhi.

There is no refuge from Allah except in Him, and none is protected from His decree except the one upon whom He has mercy and compassion.

Khamsu khiṣālin ūṣīkum bihā

Five Qualities I Counsel You to Keep

wa-ʾūṣīkum bikhamsi khiṣālin, ʾin lāzamtumūhā waṣaltum wāttaṣaltum, wa-ʾin ʾahmaltumūhā turiktum wa-nqaṭaʿtum:

I counsel you to keep five qualities. If you remain constant in them, you will arrive and become connected; if you neglect them, you will be left behind and cut off.

ʾawwaluhā: luzūmu al-ṣalawāti al-khamsi fī al-jamāʿati; fa-ʾinnahā al-ʿiṣmatu min kulli ʾāfatin.

The first is to observe the five daily prayers in congregation, for they are a safeguard against every affliction.

wa-l-thāniyatu: mujānabatu ʾahli al-ʿinādi mina al-ẓalamati waghayrihim, min ghayri munāzaʿatin lahum fīmā hum fīhi, ʾillā bishafaqatin wa-ʾirshādin yaṣḥabuhumā rifqun.

The second is to keep apart from obstinate people, whether oppressors or others, without contending with them over their condition, except through compassionate counsel accompanied by gentleness.

wa-l-thālithatu: ʾidhā kānat lakum ḥājatun ʾilā ʾaḥadin mina al-khalqi, ʾaw kānat lahu ʿindakum ḥājatun, faqaddimū al-duʿāʾa fī qaḍāʾihā qabla al-tawajjuhi ʾilayhā; litakūnū bi-llāhi, lā bi-ʾanfusikum.

The third is this: when you need something from another person, or someone needs something from you, begin by praying for the need to be fulfilled before you act, so that you proceed through Allah rather than through your own selves.

wa-l-rābiʿatu: al-qiyāmu biḥuqūqi al-khalqi; bi-l-raḥmati li-l-ṣaghīri, wa-l-ḥurmati li-l-kabīri, wa-l-shafaqati ʿalā al-ʿāṣī, wa-l-tawāḍuʿi li-l-muṭīʿi, wa-l-ʾiḥsāni ʾilā man ʾasāʾa ʾilaykum, wa-l-duʿāʾi lahu bi-l-ṣalāḥi, min ghayri ḥiqdin ʿalayhi.

The fourth is to fulfill the rights of people: show mercy to the young, honor the old, have compassion for the disobedient, be humble toward the obedient, do good to anyone who wrongs you, and pray for that person’s reform without holding resentment.

wa-l-khāmisatu: al-rifqu bi-l-nafsi min ghayri farṭin wa-lā ʾifrāṭin.

The fifth is to treat the self gently, without neglect or excess.

fa-lā tazīdu fī al-ḍuḥā ʿalā sitti rakaʿātin fa-ʾaqalla, waqabla al-ẓuhri ʾarbaʿan, wabaʿdahu rakʿatayni, waqabla al-ʿaṣri ʾarbaʿan, wabaʿda al-maghribi rakʿatayni.

For the midmorning prayer, do not go beyond six cycles or fewer; pray four before noon prayer, two after it, four before the afternoon prayer, and two after sunset prayer.

wamina al-layli ʿashra rakaʿātin, wa-l-shafʿa wa-l-witra; kullu dhalika bighayri qirāʾatin maʿlūmatin, wa-lā ṣifatin maʿlūmatin; fa-ʾinna dhalika bidʿatun.

At night, pray ten cycles, followed by the even prayer and the witr. Do all of this without assigning a fixed recitation or a fixed form, for imposing such a form would be an innovation.

wamā dhakartu lakum huwa ṭarīqī, wa-l-sunnatu allatī kāna ʿalayhā ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wasallama, yaʿmalu bihā ḥattā laqiya Allāha taʿālā.

What I have mentioned to you is my path and the Prophetic practice that he, Allah bless him and grant him peace, followed until he met Allah Most High.

wa-l-ziyādatu lā ʾuḥibbuhā, wa-l-naqṣu lā ʾurīduhu.

I do not favor adding to it, and I do not want it diminished.

waʿalaykum biṣawmi al-ithnayni wa-l-khamīsi, lā ʾakthara; fa-ʾin lam taqdirū fathalāthata ʾayyāmin min kulli shahrin.

Fast on Mondays and Thursdays, but no more. If you cannot manage that, then fast three days of every month.

wa-bi-l-jumlati, khayru al-ʾumūri ʾawsaṭuhā, wamā dhakartu lakum huwa ʾawsaṭuhā; waʿamalun qalīlun fī sunnatin khayrun min ʿamalin kathīrin fī bidʿatin.

In short, the best course is the balanced one, and what I have described is the balanced course. A little action grounded in the Prophetic way is better than much action founded on innovation.

wa-l-faqīru mithlu al-naḥlati, tarʿā min kulli nawwārin, wa-lā tabītu ʾillā fī juḥrihā, wahuwa shaykhuhu; wa-ʾillā fa-lā yuntafaʿu biʿasalihā.

The spiritual seeker is like a bee: it gathers nectar from every blossom, yet spends the night only in its own hive, which is its shaykh. Otherwise, no benefit comes from its honey.

Khamsu khiṣālin anhākum ʿanhā

Five Qualities I Forbid You

wa-alladhī ʾanhākum ʿanhu khamsu khiṣālin:

I forbid you five qualities.

ʾawwaluhā: kathratu al-takhlīṭi fī al-ʿibādati waghayrihā.

The first is excessive mixing and disorder in worship and other matters.

wa-l-thāniyatu: sūʾu al-ẓanni biʿibādi Allāhi taʿālā.

The second is thinking badly of Allah’s servants.

wa-l-thālithatu: al-ightirāru biẓawāhiri al-khalqi.

The third is being deceived by people’s outward appearances.

wa-l-rābiʿatu: al-intiṣāru li-l-nafsi.

The fourth is defending the ego for its own sake.

wa-l-khāmisatu: tatabbuʿu al-fuḍūli, wa-l-dukhūlu fīmā lā yaʿnī; ka-l-tawajjuhi li-l-jihādi bighayri ʾidhni jamāʿati al-muslimīna wasulṭānihim.

The fifth is pursuing what is superfluous and involving oneself in matters that are no concern of one’s own, for example, setting out for armed struggle without the permission of the Muslim community and its ruler.

fa-ʾinnahu sullamu al-fitnati, waqalla mani ishtaghala bihi wanajaḥa; wa-l-dukhūli baynahu wabayna mukhālifīhi biwajhin lā yarḍāhu.

Such conduct is a ladder to civil strife, and few who become occupied with it succeed. This also includes placing oneself between the ruler and his opponents in a manner he does not approve.

waḥassin bi-l-nāsi ẓannan fī ʿayni al-ḥadhari minhum; fa-lā taʾman li-ʾaḥadin bi-ʾahlika wamālika wa-lā dīnika, ʾillā man jarrabtahu ʾalfa marratin ʾannahu yakhāfu Allāha wayattaqīhi.

Think well of people while remaining watchful. Do not entrust anyone with your family, wealth, or religion unless repeated experience has shown you that the person fears Allah and remains mindful of Him.

wa-jʿal mā fī yadika ka-ʾannaka khāzinun lahu; taʾkulu minhu bi-l-maʿrūfi, watuṭʿimu ʿibāda Allāhi taʿālā min ghayri ʾisrāfin wa-lā ʾiqtārin.

Regard whatever lies in your hand as something placed in your care. Take from it in a fair manner, and feed Allah’s servants without extravagance or stinginess.

waman khallaṭa fī ṭarīqatihi lam yantafiʿ binafsihi.

Whoever introduces disorder into his spiritual path gains no benefit through his own efforts.

waman kaththara ʿadada al-ʾadhkāri wa-l-ʿibādāti - ghayra mā ṣaḥḥa fī al-sunnati - baʿuda ʿalayhi al-fatḥu; li-ʾannahu kaman yurīdu ḥafra biʾrin, yurīdu māʾahā, wayaḥfiru fī kulli mawḍiʿin shibran.

Whoever multiplies litanies and devotional acts beyond what is soundly established in the Prophetic way makes spiritual opening remote. Such a person resembles someone seeking water from a well while digging only a handspan in every place.

waman taʿallaqat himmatuhu bi-l-mashāyikhi lam yantafiʿ minhum biṭāʾilin; li-ʾannahu ʾisqāṭun liḥurmatihim.

Whoever fastens his spiritual aspiration to the shaykhs themselves gains little from them, because this diminishes the reverence due to them.

wa-ʾiyyākum wa-l-waswāsa; fa-ʾinnahu bidʿatun waḍalālun, wa-sʾalū Allāha taʿālā al-ʿāfiyata.

Beware of obsessive whispering, for it leads to innovation and misguidance. Ask Allah Most High for well-being.

wa-ʾiyyākum, thumma ʾiyyākum, wamukhālaṭata al-fuqarāʾi wa-l-ṭalabati min ʾahli al-ishtighāli bi-l-kunūzi wa-l-kīmiyāʾi; fa-ʾinna dhalika mubʿidun mina Allāhi, jālibun li-l-faqri, baʿīdun mina al-ḥaqqi.

Beware, and again beware, of mixing with spiritual seekers or students preoccupied with treasure hunting and alchemy. Such pursuits drive a person away from Allah, bring poverty, and stand far from truth.

Al-ulfatu wa-ikrāmu l-aṣḥābi

Fellowship and Honoring Companions

waʿalaykum bi-l-ʾulfati wa-ʾikrāmi al-ʾaṣḥābi, wahum thalāthatun:

Hold fast to fellowship and honor your companions. They are of three kinds.

ṣāḥibun lidunyāka, fa-lā turāʿi fīhi ʾillā ḥusna khuluqihi.

A companion for your worldly life: look only to the goodness of that person’s character.

waṣāḥibun li-ʾākhiratika, fa-lā turāʿi fīhi ʾillā Allāha, wa-qbalhu kayfa kāna.

A companion for your life to come: seek only Allah in that relationship, and accept the person as he is.

waṣāḥibun litaʾnasa bihi, fa-lā turāʿi fīhi ʾillā al-salāmata min sharrihi.

And a companion whose company gives you comfort: seek only to remain safe from that person’s harm.

wa-ʾiyyākum wamukhālaṭata fuqarāʾi hadhā al-zamāni; fa-ʾinnahum khuddāʿun ʾillā man qalla, wasallim lahum mā hum fīhi.

Beware of mixing freely with the spiritual seekers of this age, for most are deceptive, apart from a few. Leave them to the state they have chosen.

waʿaẓẓimi al-fuqahāʾa; fa-ʾinnahum ḥamalatu al-sharīʿati, wa-lā tukhāliṭhum; li-ʾanna nufūsahum ghālibatun ʿalayhim.

Honor the jurists, for they carry the Sacred Law; yet do not become overly familiar with them, because their lower selves dominate them.

wa-ʾakrim ʾahla al-dunyā tantafiʿ bihim, wa-lā tarfaʿhum ʿalā al-fuqarāʾi; fatasquṭa min ʿayni Allāhi taʿālā, watuzdarā ʿindahum.

Treat worldly people with courtesy so that you may benefit through them, but do not rank them above the spiritual seekers; otherwise you will fall from Allah’s regard and become despised in their eyes.

A Particular Supplication and Remembrance

wa-l-tajiʾ fī ʾamrika kullihi ʾilā Allāhi taʿālā, tajidi al-ʾijābata ka-ʾannahā ṭawʿu yadika.

Take refuge in Allah Most High in every affair, and you will find the response as though it were placed within your reach.

waqul fī jawfi al-layli biṣawtin mamdūdin: «yā ghaniyyu, man li-l-faqīri siwāka? yā ʿazīzu, man li-l-dhalīli siwāka? yā qadīru, man li-l-ʿājizi siwāka? yā qawiyyu, man li-l-ḍaʿīfi siwāka?».

In the depths of the night, say in a prolonged voice: ‘O Self-Sufficient One, whom does the poor one have besides You? O Mighty One, whom does the abased one have besides You? O All-Powerful One, whom does the helpless one have besides You? O Strong One, whom does the weak one have besides You?’

wakarrir dhalika mirāran, tajidi al-ʿajaba min ʾamrika.

Repeat this many times, and you will witness something wondrous in your affair.

wa-lāzim fī kulli yawmin ʾan taqūla: yā ʿazīzu, yā jabbāru, yā mutakabbiru, yā wadūdu, yā baṣīru; miʾatan wakhamsan waʿishrīna marratan.

Make it a daily practice to say, ‘O Mighty One, O Compeller, O Supremely Great One, O Loving One, O All-Seeing One,’ one hundred and twenty-five times.

watuṣalliya ʿalā sayyidinā muḥammadin ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wasallama mithlahā; tarā al-ʿajaba min nufūdhi al-kalimati, waẓuhūri al-ʾamri, wadhillati nafsika laka, ʾilā ghayri dhalika.

Send the same number of blessings upon our master Muḥammad, Allah bless him and grant him peace. You will witness remarkable effects: your word will carry weight, your affair will become manifest, and your lower self will submit to you, along with other benefits.

hadhā khuṣṣa bika yā ʿabda al-maliki.

This instruction is especially for you, ʿAbd al-Malik.

I now write down the litany that I have practiced. If it is feasible for you, observe it in your lodges, for it is drawn from the sayings of Allah’s Messenger, Allah bless him and grant him peace. Here ends the letter.

Khawātīmu sūrati l-baqarati

The Closing Verses of Sūrat al-Baqarah — Qurʾan 2:284–286

li-llāhi mā fī al-samāwāti wamā fī al-ʾarḍi wa-ʾin tubdū mā fī ʾanfusikum ʾaw tukhfūhu yuḥāsibkum bihi Allāhu

To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it.

fayaghfiru liman yashāʾu wayuʿadhdhibu man yashāʾu wa-llāhu ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun (284)

Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. Allah has power over all things. (284)

ʾāmana al-rasūlu bimā ʾunzila ʾilayhi min rabbihi wa-l-muʾminūna

The Messenger believes in what was sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers.

kullun ʾāmana bi-llāhi wamalāʾikatihi wakutubihi warusulihi lā nufarriqu bayna ʾaḥadin min rusulihi

Each believes in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. We make no distinction between any of His messengers.

waqālū samiʿnā wa-ʾaṭaʿnā ghufrānaka rabbanā wa-ʾilayka al-maṣīru (285)

They say, ‘We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord; to You is the final return.’ (285)

Lā yukallifu Allāhu nafsan illā wusʿahā; lahā mā kasabat wa-ʿalayhā mā iktasabat.

Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. It receives the good it has earned and bears the evil it has acquired.

Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not place upon us a burden like the one You placed upon those before us.

rabbanā wa-lā tuḥammilnā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bihi wa-ʿfu ʿannā wa-ghfir lanā wa-rḥamnā

Our Lord, do not make us bear what we have no strength to carry. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us.

ʾanta mawlānā fa-nṣurnā ʿalā al-qawmi al-kāfirīna (286)

You are our Protecting Master, so grant us victory over those who reject faith. (286)

Appendix: The Addition Attributed to Shaykh al-Kharrūbī

Transmitters with an isnād to Zarrūq identified the following formula as an addition by his disciple Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Kharrūbī. It is kept here, apart from Zarrūq’s text.

yā mawlānā yā mujību, man yarjūka lā yakhību; tawassalnā bi-l-ḥabībi, iqḍi ḥājātinā qarīban.

Our Master, O Answerer: whoever places hope in You is never disappointed. We seek a means to You through the Beloved, so fulfill our needs soon.

Āmīn, Āmīn, Āmīn, Āmīn rabba al-ʿālamīna. [thalāthan]

Amen, amen, amen, amen, Lord of all worlds. [3 times]

Reading and translation notes

Each unit appears in three lines: fully vocalized Arabic, scholarly transliteration, and a fresh modern English translation. Qurʾānic passages are divided at verse or clause boundaries so that every line stays aligned.

Verse numbers appear at the end of each complete verse in the Arabic, the transliteration, and the translation. Where a passage quotes only part of a verse, the section heading gives its reference. Repetition counts appear in square brackets at the end of the unit they belong to.

The transliteration uses ā ī ū for long vowels; ʾ for hamza; ʿ for ʿayn; and th, ḥ, kh, dh, ṣ, ḍ, ṭ, ẓ, gh, and q for the corresponding Arabic consonants. The written article appears as al- even before sun letters. Arabic case endings are retained where the vocalized text requires them; ordinary pausal recitation may omit a final short vowel.

Source and scope

Author: Imam Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad ibn Aḥmad Zarrūq al-Burnusī al-Fāsī. The litany also bears the title Safīnat al-Najā li-man ilā Allāh iltajā, The Ship of Salvation for Whoever Seeks Refuge in Allah.

The Arabic base follows the complete manuscript-based edition prepared by Nizār Ḥammādī from National Library of Tunisia manuscript 21338, folios 53–54. An independent Shādhilī transmission served as a check on sequence, repetitions, and later additions. The formula attributed to Muḥammad al-Kharrūbī stays in a separate appendix and is not inserted into Zarrūq’s text.

Reading and translation notes

Each unit appears in three lines: fully vocalized Arabic, transliteration, and a modern English translation. The Arabic remains the governing devotional text. The transliteration supports pronunciation, and the English conveys the meaning without replacing the Arabic.

A formula repeated 100 or 1,200 times appears here once. The heading of each section gives its counts in square brackets, and the recitation order above shows where it falls in each wird.

The Arabic includes grammatical vowel endings. When a reader pauses at the end of a line, the normal rules of Arabic pause apply, so a final short vowel or tanwīn may not be pronounced. The transliteration uses a readable pausal form at most line endings and keeps connected pronunciation within each line.

Transliteration key

ā ī ū — long vowels

ʾ — hamza

ʿ — ʿayn

ḥ — deep h

kh gh — khāʾ and ghayn

sh — shīn

th dh — thāʾ and dhāl

ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ — emphatic consonants

q — qāf

j — jīm

In the long istighfār, the nominative vocalization al-Ḥayyu al-Qayyūmu treats the two divine names as an apposition to huwa. The accusative al-Ḥayya al-Qayyūma is also grammatically recognized as a description of Allāh.

Jawharat al-Kamāl uses dense mystical imagery. The Arabic word ʿayn can mean eye, source, spring, or essence; this edition uses source or wellspring according to context. The translation remains interpretive and does not exhaust the Arabic meanings.

The cited Tijānī guidance treats these awrād as transmitted practices received through authorization from a qualified muqaddam. This reading edition preserves the public text. It does not confer ijāza or replace correction of pronunciation and practical instruction from an authorized teacher.
