Ḥizb al Baḥr Ḥizb al Barr Ḥizb al Naṣr
This complete reading edition of the Litanies of Imam Abu Al Hasan Al Shadhili presents the three litanies in short, aligned units: one line of vocalized Arabic, one line of transliteration, and one line of modern English. The English translation was prepared directly from the Arabic for this edition. The source texts, their sequence, and their repetition marks are retained.
Reading the transliteration
ā, ī, ū mark long vowels; ʿ marks ʿayn and ʾ marks an internal hamza. The pairs th, dh, sh, kh, and gh represent single Arabic sounds. Dotted letters ḥ, ṣ, ḍ, ṭ, and ẓ distinguish Arabic consonants without exact English equivalents. Doubled consonants correspond to shadda.
The transliteration shows words and grammatical endings, rather than every change in connected recitation. The article is written al- consistently; its l assimilates before the sun letters in speech. Initial joining vowels shown after wa, fa, and similar words fall away when read continuously. Normal pausing may drop a final short vowel or change an ending. Full tajwīd is not encoded.
Qur’anic initial letters are read by their names, such as Kāf Hā Yā ʿAyn Ṣād; they are not translated as ordinary words. Parenthetical counts follow the source. The new line breaks do not determine how much of a longer passage is repeated; the linked source PDFs preserve the original arrangement.

The All-Merciful is established upon the Throne.

Allāhumma innaka taʿlamu annī bi-al-jahālati maʿrūfun,
O Allah, You know that ignorance is my condition,
wa-Anta bi-al-ʿilmi mawṣūfun,
while knowledge is Your attribute.
Wa-qad wasiʿta kulla shayʾin min jahālatī bi-ʿilmika,
Your knowledge encompasses every aspect of my ignorance;
fa-saʿ dhālika bi-raḥmatika kamā wasiʿtahu bi-ʿilmika,
so encompass it with Your mercy as You encompass it with Your knowledge.
Wa-ighfir lī, innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
Forgive me. You have power over all things.
Yā Allāhu yā Māliku yā Wahhābu,
O Allah, O Sovereign, O Generous Giver,
hab lanā min nuʿmāka mā ʿalimta lanā fīhi riḍāka,
grant us those blessings that You know will bring us Your good pleasure.
Wa-uksunā kiswatan taqīnā bihā mina al-fitani

that may lie within any of Your gifts.
Wa-qaddisnā bihā ʿan kulli waṣfin yūjibu naqṣan

Yā Allāhu yā ʿAẓīmu, yā ʿAliyyu yā Kabīru,
O Allah, O Magnificent, O Most High, O Most Great,
nasʾaluka al-faqra mimmā siwāka,
we ask to be empty of all that is other than You,
wa-al-ghinā bika ḥattā lā nashhada illā iyyāka,
and rich through You, until we witness none but You.
Wa-ulṭuf binā fīhimā luṭfan
Treat us gently in both these states,
ʿalimtahu yaṣluḥu li-man wālāka,
with the gentleness You know befits those devoted to You.
Wa-uksunā jalābība al-ʿiṣmati fī al-anfāsi wa-al-laḥaẓāti,
Clothe us in Your protection through every breath and every moment.

through which we may become whole in life and in death.
Allāhumma Anta al-ḥamīdu, al-rabbu al-majīdu,
O Allah, You are the Praiseworthy, the Glorious Lord,
al-faʿʿālu li-mā turīdu,
who accomplishes whatever You will.
Taʿlamu faraḥanā bi-mādhā wa-li-mādhā wa-ʿalā mādhā,
You know what gives us joy, why we rejoice, and what our joy rests upon.
Wa-taʿlamu ḥuznanā ka-dhālika,
You know our sorrow in the same way.
Wa-qad awjabta kawna mā aradtahu fīnā wa-minnā,
You have decreed that what You will shall come to be within us and through us.
Wa-lā nasʾaluka dafʿa mā turīdu,
We do not ask You to avert what You will;
wa-lākin nasʾaluka al-taʾyīda bi-rūḥin min ʿindika
we ask You to strengthen us with a spirit from Your presence
fīmā turīdu, kamā ayyadta anbiyāʾaka wa-rusulaka,
in whatever You will, as You strengthened Your prophets and messengers,
wa-khāṣṣata al-ṣiddīqīna min khalqika,
and the foremost of the utterly truthful among Your creation.
Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
You have power over all things.
Allāhumma fāṭira al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi,
“O Allah, Originator of the heavens and the earth,
ʿālima al-ghaybi wa-al-shahādati,
Knower of the unseen and the visible,
Anta taḥkumu bayna ʿibādika,
You judge between Your servants.”
Fa-hanīʾan li-man ʿarafaka fa-raḍiya bi-qaḍāʾika,
Blessed is the one who knows You and is content with Your decree.
Wa-al-waylu li-man lam yaʿrifka,
Woe to the one who does not know You;
bali al-waylu thumma al-waylu li-man aqarra bi-waḥdāniyyatika,
rather, woe upon woe to one who acknowledges Your oneness
wa-lam yarḍa bi-aḥkāmika.
yet is not content with Your judgments.
Allāhumma inna al-qawma qad ḥakamta ʿalayhim bi-al-dhulli
O Allah, You decreed lowliness for those devoted to You
ḥattā ʿazzū, wa-ḥakamta ʿalayhim bi-al-faqdi ḥattā wajadū,
until they found honor, and loss until they found fulfillment.
Fa-kullu ʿizzin yamnaʿu dūnaka
For every honor that keeps us from You,
fa-nasʾaluka badalahu dhullan taṣḥabuhu laṭāʾifu raḥmatika,
we ask instead for humility attended by the tender gifts of Your mercy.
Wa-kullu wajdin yaḥjubu ʿanka
For every attainment that veils You from us,
fa-nasʾaluka ʿiwaḍahu faqdan taṣḥabuhu anwāru maḥabbatika,
we ask instead for loss attended by the lights of Your love.
Fa-innahu qad ẓaharati al-saʿādatu ʿalā man aḥbabtahu,
Blessedness is manifest in those You love,
wa-ẓaharati al-shaqāwatu ʿalā man ghayruka malakahu,
and misery in those possessed by something other than You.
Fa-hab lanā min mawāhibi al-suʿadāʾi,
Grant us the gifts bestowed on the blessed,
wa-iʿṣimnā min mawāridi al-ashqiyāʾi.
and protect us from the paths that lead to misery.
Allāhumma innā qad ʿajaznā ʿan dafʿi al-ḍurri ʿan anfusinā
O Allah, we cannot ward off harm from ourselves,
min ḥaythu naʿlamu bi-mā naʿlamu,
even when we know its source and use what we know.
Fa-kayfa lā naʿjizu ʿan dhālika
How much more helpless are we
min ḥaythu lā naʿlamu bi-mā lā naʿlamu,
when its source and its remedy are unknown to us!
Wa-qad amartanā wa-nahaytanā,
You have given us commands and prohibitions,
wa-al-madḥa wa-al-dhamma alzamtanā,
and made us subject to praise and blame.
Fa-akhū al-ṣalāḥi man aṣlaḥtahu,
The righteous person is the one You have set right;
wa-akhū al-fasādi man aḍlaltahu,
the corrupt person is the one You have led astray.
Wa-al-saʿīdu ḥaqqan man aghnaytahu ʿani al-suʾāli minka,
Truly blessed is the one You provide for before he needs to ask You.
Wa-al-shaqiyyu ḥaqqan man aḥramtahu maʿa kathrati al-suʾāli laka,
Truly wretched is the one You leave deprived despite his many prayers to You.
Fa-aghninā bi-faḍlika ʿan suʾālinā minka,
By Your grace, provide for us beyond our need to ask.
Wa-lā taḥrimnā min raḥmatika maʿa kathrati suʾālinā laka,
Do not withhold Your mercy from us when we call on You so often.
Wa-ighfir lanā, innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
Forgive us. You have power over all things.
Yā Shadīda al-baṭshi yā Jabbāru yā Qahhāru yā Ḥakīmu,
O Mighty in grasp, O Compeller, O All-Subduing, O All-Wise,
naʿūdhu bika min sharri mā khalaqta,
we seek refuge in You from the evil of what You have created,
wa-naʿūdhu bika min ẓulmati mā abdaʿta,
and from the darkness within what You have brought into being.
Wa-naʿūdhu bika min kaydi al-nufūsi fīmā qaddarta wa-aradta,
We seek refuge in You from the self’s scheming amid what You decree and will,
wa-naʿūdhu bika min sharri al-ḥussādi ʿalā mā anʿamta,
and from the harm of those who envy the blessings You have given.
Wa-nasʾaluka ʿizza al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati,
We ask You for honor in this world and the hereafter,
kamā saʾalakahu nabiyyuka sayyidunā Muḥammadun
as Your prophet, our master Muhammad, asked You,
ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace:
ʿizza al-dunyā bi-al-īmāni wa-al-maʿrifati,
honor in this world through faith and intimate knowledge of You,
wa-ʿizza al-ākhirati bi-al-liqāʾi wa-al-mushāhadati,
and honor in the hereafter through meeting and beholding You.
Innaka samīʿun qarībun mujībun.
You hear us, are near to us, and answer our prayers.
Allāhumma innī uqaddimu ilayka
O Allah, I offer to You,
bayna yaday kulli nafasin wa-lamḥatin wa-ṭarfatin,
before every breath, every glance, and every blink
yaṭrifu bihā ahlu al-samāwāti wa-ahlu al-arḍi
of those who dwell in the heavens and on earth,
wa-kullu shayʾin huwa fī ʿilmika kāʾinun aw qad kāna,
and everything You know to exist or to have existed—
uqaddimu laka bayna yaday dhālika kullihi:
before all of this, I offer You these words:
Allāhu lā ilāha illā Huwa al-ḥayyu al-qayyūmu
“Allah—there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all.
Lā taʾkhudhuhu sinatun wa-lā nawmun
Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.
Lahu mā fī al-samāwāti wa-mā fī al-arḍi
To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and on the earth.
Man dhā alladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnihi
Who can intercede with Him except by His permission?
Yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa-mā khalfahum
He knows what lies before them and what lies behind them.
Wa-lā yuḥīṭūna bi-shayʾin min ʿilmihi illā bi-mā shāʾa
They grasp nothing of His knowledge except what He wills.
Wasiʿa kursiyyuhu al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍa
His Footstool encompasses the heavens and the earth.
Wa-lā yaʾūduhu ḥifẓuhumā
Preserving them does not burden Him.

Wa-Huwa al-ʿaliyyu al-ʿaẓīmu.
He is the Most High, the Magnificent.”
Aqsamtu ʿalayka bi-basṭi yadayka wa-karami wajhika,
I implore You by Your outstretched hands and Your noble countenance,
wa-nūri ʿaynika wa-kamāli aʿyunika,
by the light of Your eye and the perfection of Your eyes,
an tuʿṭīnā khayra mā nafadhat bihi mashīʾatuka,
to grant us the good of all that Your will has brought about,
wa-taʿallaqat bihi qudratuka,
that Your power has encompassed,
wa-jarā bihi qalamuka, wa-aḥāṭa bihi ʿilmuka,
that Your Pen has recorded, and that Your knowledge embraces.
Wa-ikfinā sharra mā huwa ḍiddun li-dhālika,
Protect us from the evil of all that is contrary to that good.
Wa-akmil lanā dīnanā, wa-atmim ʿalaynā niʿmataka,
Perfect our religion for us, and complete Your blessing upon us.
Wa-hab lanā ḥikmata al-ḥikmati al-bālighati,
Grant us the innermost wisdom of Your far-reaching wisdom,
maʿa al-ḥayāti al-ṭayyibati, wa-al-mawtati al-ḥasanati,
together with a wholesome life and a good death.
Wa-tawalla qabḍa arwāḥinā bi-yadika,
Take charge of receiving our souls with Your own hand.
Wa-ḥul baynanā wa-bayna ghayrika
Stand between us and all that is other than You,
fī al-barzakhi wa-mā qablahu wa-mā baʿdahu
in the life between death and resurrection, before it, and after it,
bi-nūri dhātika, wa-ʿaẓīmi qudratika, wa-jamīli faḍlika,
through the light of Your Essence, Your mighty power, and Your beautiful grace.
Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
You have power over all things.
Yā Allāhu yā ʿAliyyu yā ʿAẓīmu,
O Allah, O Most High, O Magnificent,
yā Ḥalīmu yā Ḥakīmu yā Karīmu,
O Forbearing, O All-Wise, O Generous,
yā Samīʿu yā Qarību yā Mujību yā Wadūdu,
O All-Hearing, O Ever-Near, O Answerer of prayers, O Loving,
ḥul baynanā wa-bayna fitnati al-dunyā wa-al-nisāʾi
stand between us and the temptations of the world and of women,
wa-al-ghaflati wa-al-shahwati, wa-ẓulmi al-ʿibādi wa-sūʾi al-khuluqi,
of heedlessness and desire, of human injustice and bad character.
Wa-ighfir lanā dhunūbanā, wa-iqḍi ʿannā tabiʿātinā,
Forgive our sins and discharge the obligations that weigh upon us.
Wa-ikshif ʿannā al-sūʾa, wa-najjinā mina al-ghammi,
Remove harm from us, deliver us from anguish,
wa-ijʿal lanā minhu makhrajan,
and open a way out of it for us.
Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
You have power over all things.
Yā Allāhu yā Allāhu yā Allāhu,
O Allah, O Allah, O Allah,
yā Laṭīfu yā Razzāqu, yā Qawiyyu yā ʿAzīzu,
O Gentle, O Provider, O Strong, O Almighty,
laka maqālīdu al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi,
Yours are the keys of the heavens and the earth.
Tabsuṭu al-rizqa li-man tashāʾu wa-taqdiru,
You give provision abundantly to whom You will, and You measure it out.
Fa-ubsuṭ lanā mina al-rizqi
Give us abundantly of that provision
mā tūṣilunā bihi ilā raḥmatika,
through which You bring us to Your mercy;
wa-min raḥmatika mā taḥūlu bihi baynanā wa-bayna niqmatika,
of that mercy which stands between us and Your retribution;
wa-min ḥilmika mā yasaʿunā bihi ʿafwuka,
and of that forbearance through which Your pardon embraces us.
Wa-ikhtim lanā bi-al-saʿādati allatī khatamta bihā li-awliyāʾika,
Grant our lives the blessed ending You grant Your friends.
Wa-ijʿal khayra ayyāminā wa-asʿadahā yawma liqāʾika,
Make the day we meet You the best and happiest of our days.
Wa-zaḥziḥnā fī al-dunyā ʿan nāri al-shahwati,
In this world, draw us away from the fire of desire,
wa-adkhilnā bi-faḍlika fī mayādīni al-raḥmati,
and admit us by Your grace into the open fields of mercy.
Wa-uksunā min ladunka jalābība al-ʿiṣmati,
Clothe us in garments of protection from Your presence.
Wa-ijʿal lanā ẓahīran min ʿuqūlinā,
Make our minds a source of support,
wa-muhayminan min arwāḥinā, wa-musakhkharan min anfusinā,
our spirits watchful guardians, and our lower selves obedient servants,
kay nusabbiḥaka kathīran, wa-nadhkuraka kathīran,
“so that we may glorify You often and remember You often.
Innaka kunta binā baṣīran.
You have always watched over us.”
Wa-hab lanā mushāhadatan taṣḥabuhā mukālamatun,
Grant us the vision of You, accompanied by intimate speech with You.
Wa-iftaḥ asmāʿanā wa-abṣāranā,
Open our hearing and our sight.
Wa-udhkurnā idhā ghafalnā ʿanka
When we forget You, remember us
bi-aḥsani mā tadhkurunā bihi idhā dhakarnāka,
with the finest remembrance You bestow when we remember You.
Wa-irḥamnā idhā ʿaṣaynāka
When we disobey You, have mercy on us
bi-atammi mā tarḥamunā bihi idhā aṭaʿnāka,
with the fullest mercy You bestow when we obey You.
Wa-ighfir lanā dhunūbanā mā taqaddama minhā wa-mā taʾakhkhara,
Forgive all our sins, those that came before and those that come after.
Wa-ulṭuf binā luṭfan yaḥjubunā ʿan ghayrika
Treat us with a gentleness that veils everything else from us,
wa-lā yaḥjubunā ʿanka,
while never veiling You from us.
Fa-innaka bi-kulli shayʾin ʿalīmun.
You have full knowledge of all things.
Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka lisānan raṭban bi-dhikrika,
O Allah, give us tongues kept fresh with Your remembrance,
wa-qalban munaʿʿaman bi-shukrika,
hearts made joyful by gratitude to You,
wa-badanan hayyinan layyinan li-ṭāʿatika,
and bodies that respond readily and gently to Your service.
Wa-aʿṭinā maʿa dhālika mā lā ʿaynun raʾat,
Along with this, grant us what no eye has seen,
wa-lā udhunun samiʿat, wa-lā khaṭara ʿalā qalbi basharin,
no ear has heard, and no human heart has imagined,
kamā akhbara bihi rasūluka sayyidunā Muḥammadun
as Your Messenger, our master Muhammad, told us,
ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallama,
may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
ḥasbamā ʿalimtahu bi-ʿilmika,
according to what You know in Your knowledge.
Wa-aghninā bi-lā sababin,
Provide for us without dependence on worldly means,
wa-ijʿalnā sababa al-ghinā li-awliyāʾika,
and make us a means of sufficiency for Your friends,
wa-barzakhan baynahum wa-bayna aʿdāʾika,
a barrier between them and Your enemies.
Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
You have power over all things.
Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka īmānan dāʾiman,
O Allah, we ask You for enduring faith.
Wa-nasʾaluka qalban khāshiʿan, wa-nasʾaluka ʿilman nāfiʿan,
We ask You for a humble heart and knowledge that benefits us.
Wa-nasʾaluka yaqīnan ṣādiqan, wa-nasʾaluka dīnan qayyiman,
We ask You for true certainty and an upright faith.
Wa-nasʾaluka al-ʿāfiyata min kulli baliyyatin,
We ask You for wellbeing amid every trial,
wa-nasʾaluka tamāma al-ʿāfiyati, wa-nasʾaluka dawāma al-ʿāfiyati,
for complete wellbeing, and for lasting wellbeing.
Wa-nasʾaluka al-shukra ʿalā al-ʿāfiyati,
We ask You for gratitude for wellbeing,
wa-nasʾaluka al-ghinā ʿani al-nāsi. (3)
and freedom from dependence on other people. (3)
Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka al-tawbata al-kāmilata,
O Allah, we ask You for complete repentance,
wa-al-maghfirata al-shāmilata, wa-al-maḥabbata al-jāmiʿata,
all-embracing forgiveness, and a love that gathers us wholly to You,
wa-al-khullata al-ṣāfiyata, wa-al-maʿrifata al-wāsiʿata,
pure intimate friendship and expansive knowledge of You,
wa-al-anwāra al-sāṭiʿata, wa-al-shafāʿata al-qāʾimata,
shining lights and intercession that holds firm,
wa-al-ḥujjata al-bālighata, wa-al-darajata al-ʿāliyata,
conclusive proof and an elevated station.
Wa-fakka wathāqinā mina al-maʿṣiyati,
Release us from the bonds of disobedience,
wa-rihānanā mina al-niqmati bi-mawāhibi al-minnati.
and free us from liability to punishment through the gifts of Your favor.
Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka al-tawbata wa-dawāmahā,
O Allah, we ask You for repentance and steadfastness in it.
Wa-naʿūdhu bika mina al-maʿṣiyati wa-asbābihā,
We seek refuge in You from disobedience and all that leads to it.
Wa-dhakkirnā bi-al-khawfi minka qabla hujūmi khaṭarātihā,
Awaken our fear of You before sinful thoughts rush upon us.
Wa-iḥmilnā ʿalā al-najāti minhā,
Carry us to safety from disobedience
wa-mina al-tafakkuri fī ṭarāʾiqihā,
and from dwelling on ways to pursue it.
Wa-imḥu min qulūbinā ḥalāwata mā ijtanaynāhu minhā,
Erase from our hearts the sweetness of what we have tasted of it.
Wa-istabdilhā bi-al-karāhati lahā
Replace that sweetness with aversion to it,
wa-al-ṭuʿmi li-mā huwa bi-ḍiddihā,
and with a taste for what is its opposite.
Wa-afiḍ ʿalaynā min baḥri karamika wa-jūdika,
Pour upon us from the sea of Your generosity and bounty,
ḥattā nakhruja mina al-dunyā ʿalā al-salāmati min wabālihā,
until we leave this world safe from its harmful consequences.
Wa-ijʿalnā ʿinda al-mawti nāṭiqīna bi-al-shahādati ʿālimīna bihā. (3)
At death, let us utter the testimony of faith with understanding. (3)
Wa-irʾaf binā raʾfata al-ḥabībi bi-ḥabībihi
Show us the tenderness of a lover toward the beloved
ʿinda al-shadāʾidi wa-nuzūlihā,
when hardships descend.
Wa-ariḥnā min humūmi al-dunyā wa-ghumūmihā,
Relieve us of the worries and sorrows of this world,
bi-al-rawḥi wa-al-rayḥāni ilā al-jannati wa-naʿīmihā.
with rest and fragrant bounty, leading into Paradise and its bliss.
Allāhumma innā nasʾaluka tawbatan sābiqatan minka ilaynā,
O Allah, first turn toward us in mercy,
li-takūna tawbatunā tābiʿatan ilayka minnā,
so that our turning back to You may follow Your turning toward us.
Wa-hab lanā al-talaqqiya minka
Grant us the ability to receive from You
ka-talaqqī Ādama minka al-kalimāti,
as Adam received the words You gave him,
li-yakūna qudwatan li-waladihi fī al-tawbati wa-al-aʿmāli al-ṣāliḥāti,
to be an example for his descendants in repentance and righteous deeds.
Wa-bāʿid baynanā wa-bayna al-ʿinādi wa-al-iṣrāri
Keep us far from obstinacy and persistence in wrongdoing,
wa-al-shabahi bi-Iblīsa raʾsi al-ghuwāti,
and from resembling Iblis, the leader of those who go astray.
Wa-ijʿal sayyiʾātinā sayyiʾāti man aḥbabta,
Let our misdeeds be those of people You love,
wa-lā tajʿal ḥasanātinā ḥasanāti man abghaḍta,
and do not let our good deeds be those of people You abhor.
Fa-al-iḥsānu lā yanfaʿu maʿa al-bughḍi minka,
For doing good brings no benefit when Your displeasure remains,
wa-al-isāʾatu lā taḍurru maʿa al-ḥubbi fīka,
and wrongdoing does no harm when love for You is present.
Wa-qad abhamta al-amra ʿalaynā li-narjuwa wa-nakhāfa,
You have kept our outcome hidden, so that we may hope and fear.
Fa-āmin khawfanā, wa-lā tukhayyib rajāʾanā,
Replace our fear with security, and do not disappoint our hope.
Wa-aʿṭinā suʾlanā,
Grant us what we ask,
fa-qad aʿṭaytanā al-īmāna min qabli an nasʾalakahu,
for You gave us faith before we ever asked You for it.
Katabta wa-ḥabbabta, wa-zayyanta wa-karrahta,
You decreed faith, made it beloved and beautiful, and made unbelief hateful.
Wa-aṭlaqta al-alsuna bi-mā bihi tarjamta,
You set our tongues free to voice what You have made known.
Fa-niʿma al-rabbu Anta, fa-laka al-ḥamdu ʿalā mā anʿamta,
How good a Lord You are! To You belongs praise for all You have bestowed.
Fa-ighfir lanā wa-lā tuʿāqibnā bi-al-salbi baʿda al-ʿaṭāʾi,
Forgive us, and do not punish us by withdrawing what You have given,
wa-lā bi-kufrāni al-niʿami wa-ḥirmāni al-riḍā.
by ingratitude for Your blessings, or by deprivation of contentment.
Allāhumma raḍḍinā bi-qaḍāʾika,
O Allah, make us content with Your decree.
Wa-ṣabbirnā ʿalā ṭāʿatika wa-ʿan maʿṣiyatika,
Give us patience in obeying You and restraint from disobeying You,
wa-ʿani al-shahawāti al-mūjibāti li-al-naqṣi wa-al-buʿdi ʿanka,
and from desires that diminish us and draw us away from You.
Wa-hab lanā ḥaqīqata al-īmāni bika,
Grant us the living reality of faith in You,
ḥattā lā nakhāfa ghayraka, wa-lā narjuwa ghayraka,
until we fear none but You and place our hope in none but You,
wa-lā nuḥibba ghayraka, wa-lā naʿbuda shayʾan siwāka,
love none but You, and worship nothing besides You.
Wa-awziʿnā shukra naʿmāʾika,
Inspire us to thank You for Your blessings,
wa-ghaṭṭinā bi-ridāʾi ʿāfiyatika,
and cover us with the mantle of Your wellbeing.
Wa-unṣurnā bi-al-yaqīni wa-al-tawakkuli ʿalayka,
Support us through certainty and trust in You.
Wa-asfir wujūhanā bi-nūri ṣifātika,
Make our faces radiant with the light of Your attributes.
Wa-aḍḥiknā wa-bashshirnā yawma al-qiyāmati bayna awliyāʾika,
Let us rejoice and hear glad news on the Day of Resurrection among Your friends.
Wa-ijʿal yadaka mabsūṭatan ʿalaynā
Let Your hand be outstretched over us,
wa-ʿalā ahlīnā wa-awlādinā wa-man maʿanā bi-raḥmatika,
over our families, our children, and those with us, through Your mercy.
Wa-lā takilnā ilā anfusinā ṭarfata ʿaynin
Do not leave us to ourselves for the blink of an eye,
wa-lā aqalla min dhālika, yā niʿma al-mujību. (3)
or even less than that, O most gracious Answerer of prayers. (3)
Yā man Huwa Huwa Huwa fī ʿuluwwihi qarībun,
O He, He, He—who is near in His transcendence,
yā Dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi,
O Possessor of majesty and generosity,
yā muḥīṭan bi-al-layālī wa-al-ayyāmi,
O You who encompass the nights and the days,
ashkū ilayka min ghammi al-ḥijābi,
to You I bring my anguish at being veiled from You,
wa-sūʾi al-ḥisābi, wa-shiddati al-ʿadhābi,
my dread of a bitter reckoning and severe punishment.
Wa-inna dhālika la-wāqiʿun, mā lahu min dāfiʿin
Surely this will come, and nothing can avert it,

unless You have mercy on me.

Wa-la-qad shakā ilayka Yaʿqūbu fa-khallaṣtahu min ḥuznihi,
Jacob brought his grief to You, and You delivered him from sorrow,
wa-radadta ʿalayhi mā dhahaba min baṣarihi,
restored the sight he had lost,
wa-jamaʿta baynahu wa-bayna waladihi,
and reunited him with his son.
Wa-la-qad nādāka Nūḥun min qablu fa-najjaytahu min karbihi,
Noah called on You before, and You rescued him from distress.
Wa-la-qad nādāka Ayyūbu min baʿdu
Job called on You afterward,
fa-kashafta mā bihi min ḍurrihi,
and You relieved the suffering that afflicted him.

baʿda yaʾsi ahlihi wa-kibari sinnihi,
after his wife had lost hope and he had grown old.
Wa-la-qad ʿalimta mā nazala bi-Ibrāhīma
You knew what had befallen Abraham,
fa-anqadhtahu min nāri ʿaduwwihi,
and You saved him from his enemy’s fire.
Wa-anjayta Lūṭan wa-ahlahu mina al-ʿadhābi al-nāzili bi-qawmihi.
You saved Lot and his family from the punishment that descended on his people.
Fa-hā anā ʿabduka,
Here I am, Your servant.
In tuʿadhdhibnī bi-jamīʿi mā ʿalimta min ʿadhābika
If You punish me with every punishment known to You,
fa-anā ḥaqīqun bihi,
I deserve it.
Wa-in tarḥamnī kamā raḥimtahum maʿa ʿiẓami ijrāmī
But if You have mercy on me as You had on them, despite my grave offenses,
fa-Anta awlā bi-dhālika wa-aḥaqqu man akrama bihi,
that most befits You; none is more worthy to bestow such honor.
Fa-laysa karamuka makhṣūṣan bi-man aṭāʿaka wa-aqbala ʿalayka,
Your generosity is not reserved for those who obey You and turn toward You.

wa-in ʿaṣāka wa-aʿraḍa ʿanka,
even one who disobeys You and turns away from You.
Wa-laysa mina al-karami an lā tuḥsina
It is no mark of generosity to show kindness

only to someone who has shown kindness to You,
wa-Anta al-mifḍālu al-ghaniyyu,
when You are boundlessly generous and free of all need.

True generosity is to show kindness to one who has wronged You,

and You are the Ever-Merciful, the Most High.

Fa-Anta awlā bi-dhālika minnā,
You are more worthy of such generosity than we are.

Your mercy is worthy to reach us.

and its fear of other people.
Wa-uqrub minnī qurban tamḥaqu bihi ʿannī kulla ḥijābin
Draw so near to me that You erase every veil from me,
maḥaqtahu ʿan Ibrāhīma khalīlika,
as You erased it from Abraham, Your intimate friend,
fa-lam yaḥtaj li-Jibrīla rasūlika,
so that he had no need of Gabriel, Your messenger,
wa-lā li-suʾālihi minka,
nor even of asking You.
Wa-ḥajabtahu bi-dhālika ʿan nāri ʿaduwwihi,
Through that closeness, You shielded him from his enemy’s fire.
Wa-kayfa lā yuḥjabu ʿan maḍarrati al-aʿdāʾi

man ghayyabtahu ʿan manfaʿati al-aḥibbāʾi,
when You have made him oblivious to help from those who love him?

Kallā innī asʾaluka an tughayyibanī bi-qurbika minnī,
Never! I ask You to absorb my awareness in Your nearness to me,
ḥattā lā arā wa-lā asmaʿa wa-lā uḥissa
until I neither see, nor hear, nor sense
bi-qurbi shayʾin wa-lā bi-buʿdihi ʿannī,
anything as near to me or far from me.

Ḥumma al-amru wa-jāʾa al-naṣru fa-ʿalaynā lā yunṣarūna.
The matter is decreed and victory has come; they shall not prevail against us.
Ḥā Mīm ʿAyn Sīn Qāf ḥimāyatunā mimmā nakhāfu.
Ḥā Mīm ʿAyn Sīn Qāf is our protection from what we fear.
Allāhumma qinā sharra al-aswā, wa-lā tajʿalnā maḥallan li-al-balwā.
O Allah, protect us from evil, and do not make us a dwelling place for affliction.
Allāhumma aʿṭinā amala al-rajāʾi wa-fawqa al-amali.
O Allah, grant what we long and hope for, and more than we can hope.
Yā Huwa yā Huwa yā Huwa, yā man bi-faḍlihi li-faḍlihi,
O He, O He, O He! O You by whose grace we seek Your grace,
nasʾaluka al-ʿajala al-ʿajala,
we ask You: hasten, hasten!
Ilāhī al-ijābata, ilāhī al-ijābata.
My God, answer us! My God, answer us!
Yā man ajāba Nūḥan fī qawmihi,
O You who answered Noah concerning his people,
yā man naṣara Ibrāhīma ʿalā aʿdāʾihi,
O You who gave Abraham victory over his enemies,
yā man radda Yūsufa ʿalā Yaʿqūba,
O You who restored Joseph to Jacob,
yā man kashafa ḍurra Ayyūba,
O You who relieved Job’s suffering,
yā man ajāba daʿwata Zakariyyā,
O You who answered Zechariah’s prayer,
yā man qabila tasbīḥa Yūnusa bni Mattā,
O You who accepted the praise of Jonah son of Matta,
nasʾaluka bi-asrāri aṣḥābi hādhihi al-daʿawāti
we ask You by the spiritual secrets of those who offered these prayers:
an tataqabbala mā bihi daʿawnāka,
accept the prayer with which we have called upon You,
wa-an tuʿṭiyanā mā saʾalnāka,
and grant us what we have asked of You.
Anjiz lanā waʿdaka alladhī waʿadtahu li-ʿibādika al-muʾminīna,
Fulfill for us the promise You made to Your believing servants:
An lā ilāha illā Anta subḥānaka
“There is no god but You. Glory be to You!
Innī kuntu mina al-ẓālimīna.
I have indeed been among those who do wrong.”
Inqaṭaʿat āmālunā wa-ʿizzatika illā minka,
By Your might, all our hopes have fallen away except our hope in You.
Wa-khāba rajāʾunā wa-ḥaqqika illā fīka.
By Your truth, every hope has failed us except our hope in You.
In abṭaʾat ghāratu al-arḥāmi wa-ibtaʿadat
If help from our kin is slow and far away,
fa-aqrabu al-shayʾi minnā ghāratu Allāhi.
Allah’s rescuing help is nearer to us than anything.
Yā ghārata Allāhi jiddī al-sayra musriʿatan
O rescuing help of Allah, hurry swiftly onward
fī ḥalli ʿuqdatinā yā ghārata Allāhi.
to untie the knot of our distress, O rescuing help of Allah!
ʿAdati al-ʿādūna wa-jārū,
The aggressors have attacked and acted unjustly;
wa-rajawnā Allāha mujīran,
we have turned in hope to Allah for refuge.
Wa-kafā bi-llāhi waliyyan, wa-kafā bi-llāhi naṣīran.
Allah is enough as our guardian, and Allah is enough as our helper.
Ḥasbunā Allāhu wa-niʿma al-wakīlu,
Allah is enough for us; how good a guardian He is!
Wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata illā bi-llāhi al-ʿaliyyi al-ʿaẓīmi.
There is no strength or power except through Allah, the Most High, the Magnificent.
Istajib lanā, āmīna.
Answer us. Amen.
Fa-quṭiʿa dābiru al-qawmi alladhīna ẓalamū
So the people who did wrong were cut off to the last,
wa-al-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi al-ʿālamīna.
and all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of all worlds.
Ḥasbunā Allāhu wa-niʿma al-wakīlu. (450)
Allah is enough for us; how good a guardian He is! (450)
Sources and translation notes
The Arabic follows the editions used in the preceding Arabic-only document. Its consonantal wording and sequence have been checked against that document. Vocalization has been reviewed, with explicit long-vowel signs added where useful and a small number of vowel readings corrected. This is a reading edition based on identified published witnesses; no single universally official recension was established.

Allah is retained as the divine name. The movement between “I” and “we,” the invocations, and the prayers against enemies follow the Arabic. Divine images such as hand, eye, countenance, Throne, and Footstool are retained without imposing a physical interpretation. Maʿrifa and mushāhada are rendered according to context as intimate knowledge of God and beholding Him. Barzakh means a barrier; in the passage about death it denotes the interval before resurrection.
In Ḥizb al-Barr,
means God’s merciful turning toward the servant before the servant’s repentance. The contrasting statements about deeds, displeasure, and love are preserved within their surrounding prayer for repentance and forgiveness. Omitted objects in
are supplied in English from the context of faith and its opposite.
In Ḥizb al-Naṣr,
is an elliptical expression; the English understands it as divine grace enabling the appeal for divine grace. The source’s rhyming forms
and
are retained and transliterated fidā and al-aswā. The latter is rendered broadly as “evil.”
is rendered “Allah’s rescuing help.” The concluding count
is copied from the source.
The initial
in Ḥizb al-Baḥr has no repetition number in the selected printed extract; the Damas webpage marks it three times. The printed extract governs this edition. For isolated letters, the Arabic retains the letter sequence with reading signs, while the transliteration supplies the individual letter names.
Prepared 17 September 2026. The translation and transliteration are newly prepared for this edition; the linked Arabic sources provide the textual basis.
