mā yaqūlu mani ustujība duʿāʾuhu

What One Says When One's Supplication Is Answered

al-ḥamdu li-llāhi ʿalā ʾijābati al-duʿāʾi

All praise is due to Allah for answering the supplication.

«mā yamnaʿu ʾaḥadakum ʾidhā ʿarafa al-ʾijābata min nafsihi fa-shufiya min maraḍin, ʾaw qadima min safarin, ʾan yaqūla: al-ḥamdu li-llāhi alladhī biʿizzatihi wa-jalālihi tatimmu al-ṣāliḥātu» [مس، ي].

"What prevents any of you, when he recognizes that his prayer has been answered—when he has recovered from an illness or returned from a journey—from saying: 'All praise is due to Allah, by whose might and majesty righteous deeds are brought to completion'?"

fī al-ṣabāḥi wa-l-masāʾi [س].

In the morning and evening [س].

(1) al-ʿawratu kullu mā yustaḥyā minhu ʾidhā ẓahara, wa-l-rawʿatu al-fazaʿu.

(1) An ‘awrah is anything whose exposure causes shame, and raw‘ah means fright.

(2) qāla wakīʿu bnu al-jarrāḥi: yaʿnī al-khasfa.

(2) Waki‘ ibn al-Jarrah said: this means being swallowed by the earth.

(3) fī riwāyatin rasūlan wa-fī riwāyatin nabiyyan, qāla al-nawawiyyu: fa-yustaḥabbu ʾan yajmaʿa baynahumā fa-yuqāla: nabiyyan wa-rasūlan, wa-lawi iqtaṣara ʿalā ʾaḥadihimā kāna ʿāmilan bi-l-ḥadīthi.

(3) One narration says “Messenger” and another says “Prophet.” Al-Nawawi said that it is recommended to combine the two by saying “Prophet and Messenger”; if one uses only either term, one has still acted according to the hadith.

(4) qāla al-ʾazhariyyu: maʿnā al-ḥanīfiyyati fī al-ʾislāmi al-maylu ʾilayhi wa-l-ʾiqāmatu ʿalā ʿaqdihi, wa-qāla ibnu sīdah fī muḥkamihi: al-ḥanīfu al-muslimu alladhī yataḥannafu ʿani al-ʾadyāni, ʾay yamīlu ʾilā al-ḥaqqi.

(4) Al-Azhari said that hanifiyyah within Islam means inclining toward it and remaining steadfast in its covenant. Ibn Sidah said in his Al-Muhkam: a hanif is a Muslim who turns away from other religions—that is, inclines toward the truth.
