IMAM IBN AL-JAZARĪ

Abū al-Khayr Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad Ibn al-Jazarī · d. 833 AH

mā yuqālu ʿinda al-nawmi:

What to Say at Bedtime:

ʾidhā ʾawā ʾilā firāshihi wa-huwa ṭāhirun, ʾaw: fa-lyataṭahhar [طس]. ʾay: fa-lyatawaḍḍaʾ wuḍūʾahu li-l-ṣalāti [ع].

When he retires to bed while ritually pure—or, “let him purify himself” [طس], meaning that he should perform the same ablution as for prayer [ع].

thumma yaʾtī ʾilā firāshihi fa-yanfuḍuhu biṣanifati(5) thawbihi thalātha marrātin.

Then he should come to his bed and dust it off three times with the inner edge(5) of his garment.

thumma liyaqul: «bi-ismika rabbī waḍaʿtu janbī, wa-bika ʾarfaʿuhu, ʾin ʾamsakta nafsī fa-ighfir lahā wa-irḥamhā» [ع، خ، مص], «wa-ʾin ʾarsaltahā fa-iḥfaẓhā bimā taḥfaẓu bihi ʿibādaka al-ṣāliḥīna» [ع، مص].

Then let him say: «In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and through You I raise it. If You retain my soul, forgive it and have mercy on it» [ع، خ، مص], «and if You release it, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants» [ع، مص].

wa-yaḍṭajiʿu ʿalā shiqqihi al-ʾaymani [م، ع].

He should lie on his right side [

(1) junḥu al-layli: ṭāʾifatun minhu, wa-ʾarāda bihi hunā al-ṭāʾifata al-ʾūlā ʿinda imtidādi faḥmati al-ʿishāʾi.

(1) Junh al-layl means a portion of the night; what is intended here is its first portion, when the darkness of evening spreads.

(2) ʾay imnaʿūhum mina al-khurūji.

(2) That is, prevent them from going outside.

(3) ʾawki siqāʾaka: shudda raʾsahā bi-l-wikāʾi, wa-l-khamīru: al-taghṭiyatu.

(3) “Tie your waterskin” means secure its mouth with its tie, and “covering” means placing a cover over something.

(4) taʿruḍu: taḍaʿu ʿalayhi shayʾan bi-l-ʿarḍi. yaʿnī ʾayya shayʾin kāna min ʿūdin ʾaw ghayrihi fa-ʾinna dhālika yakfī, wa-ʾin lam yastur jamīʿa fa-mi al-ʾināʾi.

(4) “Laying across” means placing something crosswise over it—any object, whether a stick or something else, is sufficient even if it does not cover the entire mouth of the vessel.

(5) wa-fī riwāyatin: thumma yanfuḍuhu biṭarafi thawbihi. ʾay yanfuḍu firāshahu ḥadharan ʿan ḥayyatin ʾaw ʿaqrabin ʾaw qadhātin.

(5) Another narration says: “Then let him dust it off with the edge of his garment.” That is, he should dust off his bed as a precaution against a snake, scorpion, or speck of debris.

He should use his right hand as a pillow [د]—that is, place it beneath his cheek [د، ت، س].

thumma yaqūlu: «bi-ismi Allāhi waḍaʿtu janbī, Allāhumma ighfir lī dhanbī, wa-ʾakhsiʾ shayṭānī, wa-fukka rihānī, wa-thaqqil mīzānī, wa-ijʿalnī fī al-nadiyyi (al-malaʾi) [مس] al-ʾaʿlā» [د، مس].

«Allāhumma qinī ʿadhābaka yawma tabʿathu ʿibādaka» [د، مص] thalātha marrātin [د، ت، س].

«O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the day You raise Your servants» [د، مص], three times [د، ت، س].

«In Your name, my Lord, forgive my sin» [أ]. «In Your name I lay down my side, so forgive me» [مص]. «O Allah, in Your name I die and live» [خ، م، د، ت، س].

«subḥāna Allāhi, thalāthan wa-thalāthīna. al-ḥamdu li-llāhi, thalāthan wa-thalāthīna. Allāhu ʾakbaru, ʾarbaʿan wa-thalāthīna» [خ، م، د، ت، س، حب].

«Glory be to Allah, thirty-three times. All praise is due to Allah, thirty-three times. Allah is the Greatest, thirty-four times» [

wa-yajmaʿu bayna kaffayhi, thumma yanfuthu fīhimā, fa-yaqraʾu: ﴿qul huwa Allāhu ʾaḥadun [al-ʾikhlāṣi: 1], wa-﴿qul ʾaʿūdhu birabbi al-falaqi [al-falaqi: 1], wa-﴿qul ʾaʿūdhu birabbi al-nāsi [al-nāsi: 1],

Then he should wipe with them as much of his body as he can, beginning with his head, face, and the front of his body. He should do this three times [

There is no refuge or escape from You except with You. I believe in Your Book that You revealed and Your Prophet whom You sent.» Let these be the last words he speaks [ع].

wa-kāna ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam yaqraʾu al-musabbiḥāti qabla ʾan yarquda wa-yaqūlu: «ʾinna fīhinna ʾāyatan khayrun min ʾalfi ʾāyatin» [د، ت، س]. wa-hunna: «al-ḥadīdu», wa-«al-ḥashru», wa-«al-ṣaffu», wa-«al-jumuʿatu», wa-«al-taghābunu», wa-«al-ʾaʿlā» [مو، س].

Before sleeping, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the surahs that begin with glorification and say: «Among them is a verse better than one thousand verses» [د، ت، س]. They are: «Al-Hadid», «Al-Hashr», «Al-Saff», «Al-Jumu‘ah», «Al-Taghabun», and «Al-A‘la» [مو، س].

wa-ḥattā yaqraʾa: ﴿ʾAlif Lām Mīm «al-sajdata», wa-﴿tabāraka «al-mulka» [س، ت، مس، مص].

And he would not sleep until he had recited ﴿Alif Lam Mim, Surat al-Sajdah, and ﴿Blessed is He, Surat al-Mulk [

And until he had recited Surat Bani Isra’il and Surat al-Zumar [

«ʾidhā waḍaʿta janbaka ʿalā al-firāshi, wa-qaraʾta «fātiḥata al-kitābi», wa-﴿qul huwa Allāhu ʾaḥadun, fa-qad ʾaminta min kulli shayʾin ʾillā al-mawta» [ر].

«mā min rajulin yaʾwī ʾilā firāshihi, fa-yaqraʾu sūratan min kitābi Allāhi, ʾillā baʿatha Allāhu ʾilayhi malakan yaḥfaẓuhu min kulli shayʾin yuʾdhīhi, ḥattā yahubba min nawmihi, matā habba» [أ].

«ʾidhā ʾawā al-rajulu ʾilā firāshihi, ibtadarahu malakun wa-shayṭānun, fa-yaqūlu al-malaku: ikhtim bikhayrin. wa-yaqūlu al-shayṭānu: ikhtim bisharrin. fa-ʾin dhakara Allāha, thumma bāta, bāta al-malaku yaklaʾuhu(1)...», al-ḥadīthu yaʾtī tatimmatuhu

«When a man retires to bed, an angel and a devil hasten toward him. The angel says, “End with good,” while the devil says, “End with evil.” If he remembers Allah and then spends the night, the angel remains through the night guarding him(1)...» The remainder of the hadith will appear later

Etiquette Concerning Dreams

wa-ʾidhā raʾā fī manāmihi mā yuḥibbu: fa-lyaḥmadi Allāha ʿalayhi, wa-lyuḥaddith bihā [خ، م، س], wa-lā yuḥaddith bihā ʾillā man yuḥibbu.

If he sees something he likes in a dream, he should praise Allah for it and relate it [خ، م، س], but relate it only to someone he loves.

wa-ʾidhā raʾā mā yakrahu: fa-lyatful [خ، م], ʾaw liyabṣuq [م], ʾaw liyanfuth [ع] thalāthan ʿan yasārihi [ع], wa-lyataʿawwadh bi-llāhi mina al-shayṭāni wa-min sharrihā [ع] thalāthan, wa-lā yadhkurhā liʾaḥadin [خ، م، د، س، ق], fa-ʾinnahā lā taḍurruhu [ع], wa-lyataḥawwal ʿan janbihi alladhī kāna ʿalayhi [م], ʾaw liyaqum fa-lyuṣalli [خ].

If he sees something he dislikes, he should spit lightly [خ، م], spit [م], or blow lightly [ع] three times to his left [ع]; seek refuge in Allah from Satan and from its evil [ع] three times; and tell no one about it [خ، م، د، س، ق], for it will not harm him [ع]. He should turn over from the side on which he was lying [م], or rise and pray [خ].

(1) yaklaʾuhu: ʾay yaḥfaẓuhu wa-yaḥrusuhu. wa-tamāmu al-ḥadīthi: wa-ʾin wa-qaʿa ʿan sarīrihi fa-māta dakhala al-jannata.

(1) “Guarding him” means protecting and watching over him. The complete hadith continues: “If he falls from his bed and dies, he will enter Paradise.”
