The Merit of Supplication
qāla ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam: «al-duʿāʾu huwa al-ʿibādatu», thumma talā: ﴿wa-qāla rabbukumu udʿūnī ʾastajib lakum ʾinna alladhīna yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatī﴾ [ghāfirin: 60] [مص، عه، حب، مس، أ].
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Supplication is worship." Then he recited: "Your Lord has said, 'Call upon Me, and I will answer you. Those who are too arrogant to worship Me.'"
«man futiḥa lahu fī al-duʿāʾi minkum futiḥat lahu ʾabwābu al-ʾijābati» [مص].
"Whoever among you is granted an opening in supplication has had the gates of response opened for him."
"... the gates of Paradise have been opened for him."
«... futiḥat lahu ʾabwābu al-raḥmati, wa-mā suʾila Allāhu shayʾan ʾaḥabba ʾilayhi min ʾan yusʾala al-ʿāfiyata» [ت].
"... the gates of mercy have been opened for him, and Allah is not asked for anything dearer to Him than well-being." [ت].
«lā yaruddu al-qaḍāʾa ʾillā al-duʿāʾu(1), wa-lā yazīdu fī al-ʿumuri(2) ʾillā al-birru» [ت، ق، حب، مس].
"Nothing repels the decree except supplication(1), and nothing increases one's lifespan(2) except righteousness." [
«lā yughnī ḥadharun min qadarin(3), wa-l-duʿāʾu yanfaʿu mimmā nazala wa-mimmā lam yanzil, wa-ʾinna al-balāʾa layanzilu yatalaqqāhu al-duʿāʾu, fa-yaʿtalijāni ʾilā yawmi al-qiyāmati» [مس، ر، طس].
"Precaution provides no protection from destiny(3). Supplication benefits against what has already descended and what has not yet descended. Calamity may indeed descend and be met by supplication, and the two continue to struggle until the Day of Resurrection."
«laysa shayʾun ʾakrama ʿalā Allāhi mina al-duʿāʾi» [ت، ق، حب، مس].
"Nothing is more honored in Allah's sight than supplication." [
«man lam yasʾali Allāha yaghḍab ʿalayhi»(4) [ت، مس].
"Allah is angry with anyone who does not ask Him."(4) [ت، مس].
«man lam yadʿu Allāha ghaḍiba ʿalayhi» [مص].
"Allah is angry with anyone who does not supplicate to Him."
«lā taʿjazū fī al-duʿāʾi; fa-ʾinnahu lan yahlika maʿa al-duʿāʾi ʾaḥadun» [حب، مس].
"Do not give up on supplication, for no one will ever perish while supplicating." [
(1) fīhi dalīlun ʿalā ʾannahu subḥānahu yadfaʿu bi-l-duʿāʾi mā qad qaḍāhu ʿalā al-ʿabdi, wa-hiya masʾalatun khilāfiyyatun bayna al-ʿulamāʾi.
(1) This is evidence that He, Glorious is He, repels through supplication what He has decreed for the servant. Scholars differ on this issue.
(2) qīla al-murādu al-ziyādatu al-ḥaqīqiyyatu, wa-qīla al-murādu al-barakatu fī al-ʿumuri.
(2) It is said that this means a literal increase, and it is also said that it means blessing in one's lifespan.
(3) yaqūlu al-shawkāniyyu: fīhi dalīlun ʾanna al-ḥadhara lā yughnī ʿan ṣāḥibihi shayʾan mina al-qadari al-maktūbi ʿalayhi, wa-lākinnahu yanfaʿu min dhālika al-duʿāʾu, wa-l-ḥāṣilu ʾanna al-duʿāʾa min qadari Allāhi ʿazza wa-jalla fa-qad yaqḍī bishayʾin ʿalā ʿabdihi qaḍāʾan muqayyadan bi-ʾan lā yadʿuwahu, fa-ʾin daʿāhu indafaʿa ʿanhu.
(3) Al-Shawkani says: This is evidence that caution cannot protect a person from any part of the destiny written for him, but supplication does benefit him against it. In sum, supplication is itself part of Allah's decree, Mighty and Majestic. He may decree something for His servant conditionally upon the servant not supplicating to Him; if the servant does supplicate, it is repelled from him.
wa-qawluhu: yaʿtalijāni: ʾay yataṣāraʿāni wa-yatadāfaʿāni.
The phrase "the two continue to struggle" means that they contend with and repel one another.
(4) fīhi dalīlun ʿalā ʾanna al-duʿāʾa mina al-ʿabdi lirabbihi min ʾahammi al-wājibāti wa-ʾaʿẓami al-mafrūḍāti, liʾanna tajannuba mā yughḍibu Allāha minhu lā khilāfa fī wujūbihi, wa-ʾanna tarka duʿāʾi al-ʿabdi lirabbihi mina al-istikbāri.
(4) This is evidence that a servant's supplication to his Lord is among the most important duties and greatest obligations, because there is no disagreement that avoiding what angers Allah is obligatory, and because a servant's failure to call upon his Lord stems from arrogance.
«man sarrahu ʾan yastajība Allāhu lahu ʿinda al-shadāʾidi wa-l-kurabi(1) fa-lyukthiri al-duʿāʾa fī al-rakhāʾi» [ت].
"Whoever would be pleased for Allah to answer him in times of hardship and distress(1) should supplicate frequently in times of ease." [ت].
«al-duʿāʾu silāḥu al-muʾmini, wa-ʿimādu al-dīni, wa-nūru al-samawāti wa-l-ʾarḍi» [مس].
"Supplication is the believer's weapon, the pillar of the religion, and the light of the heavens and the earth." [
marra ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam biqawmin mubtalayni fa-qāla: «ʾamā kāna hāʾulāʾi yasʾalūna Allāha al-ʿāfiyata?» [د].
He (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by people who were afflicted and said, "Why did these people not ask Allah for well-being?" [د].
«mā min muslimin yanṣibu wajhahu li-llāhi taʿālā fī masʾalatin ʾillā ʾaʿṭāhā ʾiyyāhu; ʾimmā ʾan yuʿajjilahā lahu, wa-ʾimmā ʾan yaddakhirahā lahu» [أ].
"No Muslim turns his face to Allah Most High with a request without Allah granting it to him, either by granting it promptly or by storing it up for him." [أ].
(1) al-kurabu: jamʿu kurbatin wa-hiya mā yaʾkhudhu al-nafsa mina al-ghammi.
(1) Kurab is the plural of kurbah, meaning distress that grips the soul with anguish.

The Merit of Remembrance

"Allah has angels who roam the roads seeking people engaged in remembrance. When they find people remembering Allah, Mighty and Majestic, they call to one another, 'Come to what you have been seeking.'" He continued, "They surround them with their wings up to the lowest heaven..." to the end of the hadith [خ، م، ت].

(1) The remainder is: "If he draws a handspan nearer to Me, I draw an arm's length nearer to him; if he draws an arm's length nearer to Me, I draw a fathom nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him swiftly."
wa-qawluhu: (dhakartuhu fī nafsī) yaḥtamilu ʾan yurīda subḥānahu ʾanna al-ʿabda ʾidhā dhakarahu dhikran qalbiyyan ghayra shafāhiyyin ʾathābahu thawāban mukhfiyan ʿan ʿibādihi, wa-ʾaʿṭāhu ʿaṭāʾan lā yaṭṭaliʿu ʿalayhi ghayruhu, wa-yaḥtamilu ʾanna Allāha yajʿalu thawāba hādhā al-dhikri al-ʾisrāriyyi thawāban mastūran lā yaṭṭaliʿu ʿalayhi ʾaḥadun.
His words, "I remember him within Myself," may mean—Glorious is He—that when a servant remembers Him inwardly rather than aloud, He rewards him with a reward concealed from His servants and gives him a gift known to no one else. It may also mean that Allah makes the reward for this private remembrance a hidden reward known to no one.

The last conversation I had with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was when I asked, "Which deeds are dearest to Allah?" He said, "That you die while your tongue is moist with the remembrance of Allah."
