The Author's Introduction

qāla al-shaykhu, al-ʾimāmu, al-ʿallāmatu, farīdu dahrihi, wa-waḥīdu ʿaṣrihi, ʾimāmu ʾaʾimmati al-muḥaddithīna, shamsu al-millati wa-l-sharīʿati wa-l-dīni, muḥammadu bnu muḥammadi bni muḥammadi bni al-jazariyyi, khallada Allāhu taʿālā ẓilālahu, wa-ʾaʿāda ʿalā al-muslimīna min barakāti ʿulūmihi, ʾāmīna:

The shaykh, imam, erudite scholar, peerless in his age and unique in his era, leader of the foremost hadith scholars, sun of the community, the Sacred Law, and the religion, Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Jazari—may Allah Most High perpetuate his shadow and once again bestow upon the Muslims the blessings of his knowledge. Amen—said:

ʾammā baʿda ḥamdi Allāhi alladhī jaʿala al-duʿāʾa sababan liraddi al-qaḍāʾi, wa-l-ṣalāti wa-l-salāmi ʿalā muḥammadin sayyidi al-ʾanbiyāʾi, wa-ʿalā ʾālihi wa-ṣaḥbihi al-ʾatqiyāʾi al-ʾaṣfiyāʾi, fa-ʾinna hādhā al-ḥiṣna al-ḥaṣīna min kalāmi sayyidi al-mursalīna, wa-silāḥa al-muʾminīna min khizānati al-nabiyyi al-ʾamīni,

After praising Allah, who made supplication a means of repelling the decree, and invoking prayers and peace upon Muhammad, master of the prophets, and upon his devout and pure family and Companions: in this Impregnable Fortress drawn from the words of the master of the messengers, this Weapon of the Believers from the treasury of the trustworthy Prophet,

wa-l-haykala al-ʿaẓīma min qawli al-rasūli al-karīmi, wa-l-ḥirza al-maknūna(1) min lafẓi al-maʿṣūmi al-maʾmūni: badhaltu fīhi al-naṣīḥata, wa-ʾakhrajtuhu mina al-ʾaḥādīthi al-ṣaḥīḥati, ʾabraztuhu ʿuddatan ʿinda kulli shiddatin, wa-jarradtuhu junnatan(2) taqī min sharri al-nāsi wa-l-jinnati,

this Mighty Temple drawn from the words of the noble Messenger, and this concealed refuge(1) drawn from the utterances of the protected and trusted one, I have offered sincere counsel and derived it from authentic hadiths. I have presented it as provision for every hardship and made it a shield(2) that protects against the evil of humankind and jinn.

taḥaṣṣantu bihi fīmā dahama mina al-muṣībati, wa-iʿtaṣamtu min kulli ẓālimin bimā ḥawā mina al-sihāmi al-muṣībati, wa-qultu:

I fortified myself with it against every calamity that assailed me, and I sought protection from every oppressor through the unerring arrows it contains. I said:

ʾalā qūlū lishakhṣin qad taqawwā ʿalā ḍaʿfī wa-lam yakhsha raqībatan

Tell the one who has preyed upon my weakness and feared no watcher:

khabbaʾtu lahu sihāman fī al-layālī wa-ʾarjū ʾan takūna lahu muṣībatan

I have hidden arrows for him in the night, and I hope that they will strike him with calamity.

ʾasʾalu Allāha ʾan yanfaʿa bihi, wa-ʾan yufarrija ʿan kulli muslimin bisababihi.

I ask Allah to make it beneficial and, by means of it, to grant relief to every Muslim.

ʿalā ʾannahu maʿa iqtiṣārihi wa-ikhtiṣārihi lam yadaʿ ḥadīthan ṣaḥīḥan fī bābihi ʾillā istaḥḍarahu wa-ʾatā bihi.

Despite its brevity and concision, it has omitted no authentic hadith on its subject, but has brought each one to hand and included it.

wa-lammā ʾakmaltu tartībahu wa-tahdhībahu ṭalabanī ʿaduwwun, wa-lā yumkinu ʾan yadfaʿahu ʾillā Allāhu taʿālā, fa-harabtu minhu mukhtafiyan, wa-taḥaṣṣantu bi-hādhā al-ḥiṣni, fa-raʾaytu sayyida al-mursalīna ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam wa-ʾanā jālisun ʿalā yasārihi, wa-kaʾannahu ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam yaqūlu: mā turīdu?

When I had completed arranging and refining it, an enemy pursued me whom none but Allah Most High could repel. I fled from him in hiding and fortified myself with this fortress. Then I saw the master of the messengers (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was seated to his left, and it was as though he (peace and blessings be upon him) were saying, "What do you want?"

fa-qultu: yā rasūla Allāhi, udʿu Allāha lī wa-li-l-muslimīna, fa-rafaʿa ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam yadayhi al-karīmatayni wa-ʾanā ʾanẓuru ʾilayhimā, fa-daʿā, thumma masaḥa bihimā wajhahu al-karīma, wa-kāna dhālika laylata al-khamīsi, fa-haraba al-ʿaduwwu laylata al-ʾaḥadi, wa-farraja Allāhu ʿannī wa-ʿani al-muslimīna bibarakati mā fī hādhā al-kitābi ʿanhu ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

I said, "O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah for me and for the Muslims." He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his noble hands while I watched them and supplicated; then he wiped his noble face with them. That was on the night preceding Thursday. The enemy fled on the night preceding Sunday, and Allah relieved me and the Muslims through the blessing of what this book contains from him (peace and blessings be upon him).

wa-ʾuqaddimu ramza man lahu al-lafẓu.

I place first the siglum of the source whose wording is used.

wa-ʾin kāna al-ḥadīthu mawqūfan(1) jaʿaltu qabla ramzihi [مو]; liyuʿlama ʾannahu mawqūfun limā baʿdahu mina al-kutubi, wa-dhālika qalīlun ḥaythu ʿudima al-muttaṣilu(2) ʾawi ukhtulifa fīhi.

If a hadith is mawquf(1), I place [مو] before its siglum so that it is known to be mawquf in the books whose sigla follow. This occurs only rarely, where no connected report(2) exists or where its status is disputed.

ʿalā ʾannī lam ʾajʿal hādhihi al-rumūza ʾillā liʿālimin yarbaʾu(3) binafsihi ʿani al-taqlīdi, ʾaw limutaʿallimin yataʿarrafu ṣaḥīḥa al-kutubi wa-l-masānīdi(4), wa-ʾillā fa-fī al-ḥaqīqati lā iḥtiyāja ʾilayhā liʿumūmi al-nāsi, fa-lyaʿlam ʾannī ʾarjū ʾan yakūna jamīʿu mā fīhi ṣaḥīḥan fa-zāla al-iltibāsu.

I have included these sigla only for a scholar who holds himself(3) above mere imitation, or for a student who wishes to identify the sound works and musnads(4). In truth, ordinary people have no need of them. Let it be known that I hope everything in this book is authentic, and so all uncertainty is removed.

wa-qad jamaʿa biḥamdi Allāhi hādhā al-mukhtaṣaru al-laṭīfu mā lam tajmaʿhu mujalladātun mina al-tawālīfi.

By Allah's praise, this pleasant abridgment has gathered what volumes of other works have not gathered.

wa-ʾidhā intahā narjū mina Allāhi ʾan najʿala fī ʾākhirihi faṣlan(5) yaftaḥu mā ʾuqfila, min lafẓi mā fīhi qad ʾashkala.

When it is complete, we ask Allah to enable us to place at its end a chapter(5) that clarifies any difficult wording in it.

This introduction contains hadiths on the merit of supplication and remembrance; then the etiquettes of supplication and remembrance; the times, circumstances, and places in which prayers are answered; then the Greatest Name of Allah Most High and His Most Beautiful Names; then what is said morning and evening,

and throughout life until death, comprising everything one needs for which an authentic text has been reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); then remembrances whose merit has been reported but which are not confined to any particular time; then seeking forgiveness, which erases sins; then the merit of the magnificent Qur'an,

wa-suwarin minhu wa-ʾāyātin, thumma al-duʿāʾi alladhī ṣaḥḥa ʿanhu ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam ka-dhālika, thumma khatamtuhu bifaḍli al-ṣalāti ʿalā sayyidi al-khalqi wa-rasūli al-ḥaqqi alladhī hadā Allāhu taʿālā bihi mina al-ḍalālati, wa-baṣṣara mina al-ʿamā, fa-ʾawḍaḥa al-maḥajjata, wa-lam yadaʿ liʾaḥadin ḥujjatan, ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam kullamā dhakarahu al-dhākirūna, wa-ghafala ʿan dhikrihi al-ghāfilūna.

its surahs and verses; then the supplications likewise authentically reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him). I concluded it with the merit of invoking blessings upon the master of creation and Messenger of the Truth, through whom Allah Most High guided people from error and gave sight to those who were blind. He made the path clear and left no one any excuse—(peace and blessings be upon him) whenever those who remember mention him and those who are heedless fail to remember him.

(1) al-ḥadīthu al-mawqūfu: huwa al-ḥadīthu alladhī ʾuḍīfa ʾilā al-ṣaḥābati raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum qawlan kāna ʾaw fiʿlan ʾaw taqrīran, wa-lam yutajāwaz bihi ʾilā al-nabiyyi ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam.

(1) A mawquf hadith is a hadith attributed to the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them, whether as a statement, action, or tacit approval, and not traced beyond them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

(2) huwa alladhī samiʿahu kullu wāḥidin min ruwātihi mimman fawqahu ḥattā yantahiya ʾilā muntahāhu.
