wa-fī al-ṣabāḥi fa-qaṭ:
And in the morning only:
«yā ḥayyu yā qayyūmu, biraḥmatika ʾastaghīthu, ʾaṣliḥ lī shaʾnī kullahu, wa-lā takilnī ʾilā nafsī ṭarfata ʿaynin» [س، مس، ر].
«O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining, I seek relief through Your mercy. Set all my affairs right, and do not leave me to myself even for the blink of an eye» [

«Allāhumma ʾanta ʾaḥaqqu man dhukira, wa-ʾaḥaqqu man ʿubida, wa-ʾanṣaru mani ubtughiya, wa-ʾarʾafu man malaka, wa-ʾajwadu man suʾila, wa-ʾawsaʿu man ʾaʿṭā, ʾanta al-maliku lā sharīka laka, wa-l-fardu lā nidda laka, kullu shayʾin hālikun ʾillā wajhaka, lan tuṭāʿa ʾillā bi-ʾidhnika, wa-lan tuʿṣā ʾillā biʿilmika, tuṭāʿu fa-tashkuru, wa-tuʿṣā fa-taghfiru,
«O Allah, You are the most worthy of all who are remembered and the most worthy of all who are worshipped; the most ready to grant victory of all whose help is sought; the most compassionate of all who rule; the most generous of all who are asked; and the most bountiful of all who give. You are the King with no partner, and the One with no rival. Everything will perish except Your Countenance. You are obeyed only by Your permission and disobeyed only with Your knowledge. You are obeyed and You show appreciation; You are disobeyed and You forgive.
ʾaqrabu shahīdin, wa-ʾadnā ḥafīẓin, ḥulta dūna al-nufūsi, wa-ʾakhadhta bi-l-nawāṣī, wa-katabta al-ʾāthāra, wa-nasakhta al-ʾājāla, al-qulūbu laka mufḍiyatun(3), wa-l-sirru ʿindaka ʿalāniyatun, al-ḥalālu mā ʾaḥlalta, wa-l-ḥarāmu mā ḥarramta, wa-l-dīnu mā sharaʿta, wa-l-ʾamru mā qaḍayta, wa-l-khalqu khalquka, wa-l-ʿabdu ʿabduka,
You are the nearest Witness and the closest Guardian. You stand between souls, grasp them by their forelocks, record their deeds, and inscribe their appointed terms. Hearts lie open before You(3), and every secret is open to You. The lawful is what You have made lawful, the forbidden is what You have forbidden, the religion is what You have ordained, the command is what You have decreed, creation is Your creation, and the servant is Your servant.
wa-ʾanta Allāhu al-raʾūfu al-raḥīmu, ʾasʾaluka binūri wajhika alladhī ʾashraqat lahu al-samāwātu wa-l-ʾarḍu, wa-bikulli ḥaqqin huwa laka, wa-biḥaqqi al-sāʾilīna ʿalayka(4) ʾan tuqīlanī fī hādhihi al-ghadāti(5), wa-fī hādhihi al-ʿashiyyati, wa-ʾan tujīranī mina al-nāri biqudratika» [ط، طب].
You are Allah, the Most Kind, the Most Merciful. I ask You by the light of Your Countenance, through which the heavens and earth shine, by every right that belongs to You, and by the right that those who ask have upon You(4), to pardon me this morning(5) and this evening, and to protect me from the Fire by Your power» [ط، طب].
(1) ʾay mā ʿāhadtuka ʿalayhi wa-wāʿadtuka mina al-ʾīmāni wa-ʾikhlāṣi al-ṭāʿati laka, wa-qīla al-ʿahdu mā ʾukhidha fī ʿālami al-dharri, wa-l-waʿdu mā jāʾa ʿalā lisāni al-nabiyyi ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam: «ʾinna man māta lā yushriku bi-llāhi dakhala al-jannata», wa-maʿnā mā istaṭaʿtu muddatu dawāmi istiṭāʿatī.
(1) That is, what I covenanted and promised You regarding faith and sincere obedience to You. It is also said that this is the primordial covenant, while the promise is what came upon the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): «Whoever dies without associating anything with Allah will enter Paradise.» “As best I can” means for as long as my ability endures.
(2) maʿnā ʾabūʾu laka: ʾaʿtarifu wa-ʾaltazimu.
(2) “I acknowledge before You” means: I admit it and accept responsibility for it.
(3) ʾay munkashifatun li-llāhi subḥānahu yarāhā wa-yaʿlamu mā fīhimā wa-laysa baynahā wa-baynahu ḥijābun. wa-qīla muttasiʿatun mashrūḥatun.
(3) That is, hearts are laid bare before Allah—Glory be to Him. He sees them and knows what is within them, and no veil lies between them and Him. It is also said to mean that they are expansive and open.
(4) qāla al-shawkāniyyu: ḥaqqu al-sāʾilīna ʿalā rabbihim ʾannahum ʾidhā lam yushrikū bihi shayʾan ʾadkhalahumu al-jannata,
(4) Al-Shawkani said: the right that those who ask have upon their Lord is that if they do not associate anything with Him, He will admit them to Paradise.
wa-yumkinu ʾan yurāda ʾanna ḥaqqa al-sāʾilīna ʿalā Allāhi ʾan yujība duʿāʾahum kamā waʿadahum biqawlihi: ﴿udʿūnī ʾastajib lakum﴾, wa-biqawlihi: ﴿wa-ʾidhā saʾalaka ʿibādī ʿannī fa-ʾinnī qarībun ʾujību daʿwata al-dāʿi ʾidhā daʿāni﴾.
It may also mean that their right upon Allah is that He answer their prayer, as He promised them in His words: ﴿Call upon Me; I will answer you﴾, and in His words: ﴿When My servants ask you about Me, I am indeed near; I answer the prayer of the one who calls when he calls upon Me﴾.
(5) mina al-ʾiqālati, yuqālu ʾaqāla ʿathratahu ʾidhā tajāwaza ʿanhu, fa-l-maʿnā ʾan tatajāwaza ʿan dhunūbī fī hādhihi al-ghadāti.
(5) This derives from iqalah. It is said, “He overlooked his stumble,” when he pardoned him. Thus it means: that You pardon my sins this morning.

«There is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion, His is all praise, and He has power over all things—ten times» [

«subḥāna Allāhi: miʾata marratin, al-ḥamdu li-llāhi: miʾata marratin, lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu: miʾata marratin, Allāhu ʾakbaru: miʾata marratin» [ت].
«Glory be to Allah: one hundred times; all praise is due to Allah: one hundred times; there is no deity but Allah: one hundred times; Allah is the Greatest: one hundred times» [ت].
wa-yuṣallī ʿalā al-nabiyyi ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam ʿashra marrātin [ط].
And he should invoke blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ten times [ط].
wa-ʾini ubtuliya bihammin ʾaw daynin
If he is afflicted by worry or debt,
fa-lyaqul: «Allāhumma ʾinnī ʾaʿūdhu bika mina al-hammi wa-l-ḥazani, wa-ʾaʿūdhu bika mina al-ʿajzi wa-l-kasali, wa-ʾaʿūdhu bika mina al-jubni wa-l-bukhli, wa-ʾaʿūdhu bika min ghalabati al-dayni wa-qahri al-rijāli»(1) [د].
let him say: «O Allah, I seek refuge in You from worry and sorrow; I seek refuge in You from helplessness and laziness; I seek refuge in You from cowardice and miserliness; and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the domination of men»(1) [د].
ʾilā hunā yuqālu fī al-ṣabāḥi wa-l-masāʾi jamīʿan. wa-lākin yuqālu fī al-masāʾi makāna (ʾaṣbaḥa): (ʾamsā), wa-makāna (hādhā al-yawmi): (al-laylati), wa-makāna al-tadhkīri: al-taʾnīthu, kamā katabnāhu bi-l-ḥumrati fawqa kulli kalimatin(2).
Everything up to this point is said both morning and evening. In the evening, however, “we have entered the evening” is said in place of “we have entered the morning,” “this night” in place of “this day,” and feminine forms in place of masculine forms, as we have written in red above each word(2).

The following is added in the evening only:
«ʾamsaynā wa-ʾamsā al-mulku li-llāhi, wa-l-ḥamdu li-llāhi, ʾaʿūdhu bi-llāhi alladhī yumsiku
«We have entered the evening, and all dominion belongs to Allah this evening. All praise is due to Allah. I seek refuge in Allah, who holds back
(1) qawluhu: al-hammu; huwa al-ghammu ʿalā al-fāʾiti, qīla: al-farqu bayna al-hammi wa-l-ḥazani ʾanna al-hamma ʾinnamā yakūnu li-ʾamrin mutawaqqaʿin wa-ʾanna al-ḥazana yakūnu min ʾamrin qad wa-qaʿa, wa-qīla ʾinna al-farqa baynahumā ʾanna al-ḥazana ʿalā al-māḍī wa-l-hamma li-l-mustaqbali.
(1) The word hamm means grief over what has been missed. It is said that the difference between worry and sorrow is that worry concerns something anticipated, whereas sorrow concerns something that has already occurred. It is also said that sorrow relates to the past and worry to the future.
wa-qawluhu: al-ʿajzu: al-ʿajzu ḍiddu al-qudrati wa-ʾaṣluhu al-taʾakhkhuru ʿani al-shayʾi, ustuʿmila fī muqābalati al-qudrati.
The word ‘ajz means helplessness, the opposite of ability. Its root sense is falling behind something, and it came to be used as the opposite of ability.
wa-qawluhu: al-kasalu: huwa al-tathāqulu ʿani al-ʾumūri. wa-qawluhu al-jubnu: huwa ṣifatu al-jabāni, wa-huwa al-mahābatu li-l-ʾashyāʾi wa-l-taʾakhkhuru ʿan fiʿlihā. wa-ʾinnamā taʿawwadha minhu liʾannahu yuʾaddī ʾilā ʿadami al-qiyāmi bifarīḍati al-jihādi wa-l-ṣadʿi bi-l-ḥaqqi wa-ʾinkāri al-munkarāti.
The word kasal means feeling too heavy to act. Jubn is the quality of a coward: fear of things and shrinking back from doing them. Refuge is sought from it because it leads to failure to fulfill the duty of jihad, proclaim the truth openly, and denounce wrongs.
wa-qawluhu: wa-qahru al-rijāli: huwa shiddatu tasalluṭihim bighayri ḥaqqin taghalluban wa-jadalan.
The phrase “the domination of men” means their forceful and unjust control through overpowering and contention.
(2) hādhā fī al-nusakhi al-makhṭūṭati, ʾammā fī hādhihi al-nuskhati fa-wuḍiʿat biḥarfin ṣaghīrin fawqa kulli kalimatin.
(2) This applies to the manuscript copies. In this edition, the forms have been placed in small type above each word.

daʿā ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam salmāna fa-qāla: «ʾinna nabiyya Allāhi yurīdu ʾan yamnaḥaka kalimātin mina al-raḥmāni, targhabu ʾilayhi fīhinna, wa-tadʿū bihinna fī al-layli wa-l-nahāri: Allāhumma ʾinnī ʾasʾaluka ṣiḥḥatan fī ʾīmānin, wa-ʾīmānan fī ḥusni khuluqin, wa-najāḥan yatbaʿuhu fa-lāḥun(2), wa-raḥmatan minka wa-ʿāfiyatan, wa-maghfiratan minka wa-riḍwānan» [طس].
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) summoned Salman and said: «The Prophet of Allah wishes to grant you words from the Most Compassionate with which you may turn to Him and supplicate night and day: O Allah, I ask You for bodily health accompanied by faith, faith accompanied by good character, success followed by ultimate felicity(2), mercy and well-being from You, and forgiveness and pleasure from You» [طس].
(1) ʾay sūratu al-baqarati.
(1) That is, Surat al-Baqarah.
(2) qawluhu: ṣiḥḥatan fī ʾīmānin: ʾay ṣiḥḥatan fī badanī maʿa ʾīmānin fī qalbī, wa-qawluhu: ʾīmānan fī ḥusni khuluqin: ʾay ʾasʾaluka ʾīmānan yatbaʿuhu ḥusnu khuluqin.
(2) The words “bodily health accompanied by faith” mean health in my body together with faith in my heart. “Faith accompanied by good character” means: I ask You for faith followed by good character.
wa-qawluhu: wa-najāḥan yatbaʿuhu fa-lāḥun: al-najāḥu ḥuṣūlu al-maṭlūbi wa-l-falāḥu al-fawzu bi-l-ghāyati.
The words “success followed by ultimate felicity” mean that success is obtaining what is sought, while felicity is attaining the final goal.
wa-ʾidhā dakhala baytahu fa-lyaqul
When he enters his home, let him say:
«Allāhumma ʾinnī ʾasʾaluka khayra al-mawliji, wa-khayra al-makhraji, bi-ismi Allāhi wa-lajnā, wa-bi-ismi Allāhi kharajnā, wa-ʿalā Allāhi rabbinā tawakkalnā. thumma liyusallim ʿalā ʾahlihi» [د].
«O Allah, I ask You for the best entrance and the best exit. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and in Allah our Lord we place our trust.» Then he should greet his family with peace [د].
«ʾidhā dakhala al-rajulu baytahu, fa-dhakara Allāha ʿinda dukhūlihi, wa-ʿinda ṭaʿāmihi, qāla al-shayṭānu: lā mabīta lakum wa-lā ʿashāʾa.
«When a man enters his home and mentions Allah upon entering and at his meal, Satan says, “You have no lodging and no dinner.”
wa-ʾidhā dakhala, fa-lam yadhkuri Allāha ʿinda dukhūlihi, qāla al-shayṭānu: ʾadraktumu al-mabīta. wa-ʾidhā lam yadhkuri Allāha ʿinda ṭaʿāmihi, qāla al-shayṭānu: ʾadraktumu al-mabīta wa-l-ʿashāʾa» [م، د، ت، س، ق، ي].
But if he enters without mentioning Allah upon entering, Satan says, “You have secured lodging.” If he does not mention Allah at his meal, Satan says, “You have secured lodging and dinner”» [م، د، ت، س، ق، ي].
«ʾidhā kāna junḥu(1) al-layli, fa-kuffū ṣibyānakum(2), fa-ʾinna al-shayāṭīna tantashiru ḥīnaʾidhin, fa-ʾidhā dhahaba sāʿatun mina al-ʿishāʾi, fa-khallūhum,
«When the first part(1) of the night comes, keep your children in(2), for the devils spread out at that time. Once an hour of the evening has passed, let them go.
wa-ʾaghliq bābaka, wa-udhkuri isma Allāhi, wa-ʾaṭfiʾ miṣbāḥaka, wa-udhkuri isma Allāhi, wa-ʾawki siqāʾaka, wa-udhkuri isma Allāhi, wa-khammir ʾināʾaka(3), wa-udhkuri isma Allāhi wa-law ʾan taʿruḍa ʿalayhi shayʾan(4)» [ع].
Close your door and mention Allah’s name; extinguish your lamp and mention Allah’s name; tie your waterskin and mention Allah’s name; and cover your vessel(3) and mention Allah’s name, even if only by laying something across it(4)» [ع].
