فِي بَيَانِ اسْمِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى الْأَعْظَمِ
fī bayāni ismi Allāhi taʿālā al-ʾaʿẓami
Explanation of Allah Most High's Greatest Name
اسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ(١) الَّذِي إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ، وَإِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى: ﴿لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ﴾ [الْأَنْبِيَاءِ: ٨٧] [مس].
ismu Allāhi al-ʾaʿẓamu(1) alladhī ʾidhā duʿiya bihi ʾajāba, wa-ʾidhā suʾila bihi ʾaʿṭā: ﴿lā ʾilāha ʾillā ʾanta subḥānaka ʾinnī kuntu mina al-ẓālimīna﴾ [al-ʾanbiyāʾi: 87] [مس].
Allah's Greatest Name(1), by which He answers when called and gives when asked, is: "There is no deity but You. Glory be to You! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers." [الْأَنْبِيَاءِ: ٨٧] [مس].
وَاسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ الَّذِي إِذَا دُعِيَ بِهِ أَجَابَ، وَإِذَا سُئِلَ بِهِ أَعْطَى: «اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، الْأَحَدُ، الصَّمَدُ الَّذِي لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ» [عه، حب، مس، أ].
wa-ismu Allāhi al-ʾaʿẓamu alladhī ʾidhā duʿiya bihi ʾajāba, wa-ʾidhā suʾila bihi ʾaʿṭā: «Allāhumma ʾinnī ʾasʾaluka biʾannī ʾashhadu ʾannaka ʾanta Allāhu, lā ʾilāha ʾillā ʾanta, al-ʾaḥadu, al-ṣamadu alladhī lam yalid wa-lam yūlad, wa-lam yakun lahu kufuwan ʾaḥadun» [عه، حب، مس، أ].
Allah's Greatest Name, by which He answers when called and gives when asked, is: "O Allah, I ask You by my testimony that You are Allah; there is no deity but You, the One, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor was begotten, and to whom no one is equal." [عه، حب، مس، أ].
«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ الْأَحَدُ ...» إِلَى آخِرِهِ [مص].
«Allāhumma ʾinnī ʾasʾaluka biʾannaka ʾanta Allāhu al-ʾaḥadu...» ʾilā ʾākhirihi [مص].
"O Allah, I ask You because You are Allah, the One..." to the end [مص].

Allah Most High's Great [عه، حب، مس]—Greatest [أ، مص]—Name, by which He answers when called and gives when asked, is:
«اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدَ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ [ت]، الْحَنَّانُ [حب] الْمَنَّانُ، بَدِيعُ السَّمَوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ [عه، حب، مس، أ، ص]، يَا حَيُّ يَا قَيُّومُ» [عه، حب، مس، أ].
«Allāhumma ʾinnī ʾasʾaluka biʾanna laka al-ḥamda, lā ʾilāha ʾillā ʾanta waḥdaka lā sharīka laka [ت], al-ḥannānu [حب] al-mannānu, badīʿu al-samawāti wa-l-ʾarḍi, yā dhā al-jalāli wa-l-ʾikrāmi [عه، حب، مس، أ، ص], yā ḥayyu yā qayyūmu» [عه، حب، مس، أ].
"O Allah, I ask You because all praise belongs to You. There is no deity but You alone, with no partner [ت], the Most Tender [حب], the Bestower, the incomparable Originator of the heavens and the earth. O Possessor of Majesty and Honor [عه، حب، مس، أ، ص], O Ever-Living, O Self-Sustaining." [عه، حب، مس، أ].
وَاسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ فِي هَاتَيْنِ الْآيَتَيْنِ: ﴿وَإِلَٰهُكُمْ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ الرَّحِيمُ﴾ [الْبَقَرَةِ: ١٦٣]، وَفَاتِحَةِ «آلِ عِمْرَانَ»: ﴿الٓمٓ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ﴾ [آلِ عِمْرَانَ: ١، ٢] [د، ت، ق، مص].
wa-ismu Allāhi al-ʾaʿẓamu fī hātayni al-ʾāyatayni: ﴿wa-ʾilāhukum ʾilāhun wāḥidun lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa al-raḥmānu al-raḥīmu﴾ [al-baqarati: 163], wa-fātiḥati «ʾāli ʿimrāna»: ﴿ʾAlif Lām Mīm · Allāhu lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa al-ḥayyu al-qayyūmu﴾ [ʾāli ʿimrāna: 1, 2] [د، ت، ق، مص].
Allah's Greatest Name is in these two verses: "Your God is one God. There is no deity but Him, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful" [الْبَقَرَةِ: ١٦٣], and at the opening of Al 'Imran: "Alif Lam Mim. Allah—there is no deity but Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining" [آلِ عِمْرَانَ: ١، ٢] [د، ت، ق، مص].
وَاسْمُ اللَّهِ الْأَعْظَمُ فِي ثَلَاثِ سُوَرٍ: «الْبَقَرَةِ»، وَ«آلِ عِمْرَانَ»، وَ«طٰهٰ» [مس].
wa-ismu Allāhi al-ʾaʿẓamu fī thalāthi suwarin: «al-baqarati», wa-«ʾāli ʿimrāna», wa-«Ṭā Hā» [مس].
Allah's Greatest Name is in three surahs: al-Baqarah, Al 'Imran, and Ta Ha [مس].
قَالَ الْقَاسِمُ: فَالْتَمَسْتُهَا؛ إِنَّهُ (الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ).
qāla al-qāsimu: fa-iltamastuhā; ʾinnahu (al-ḥayyu al-qayyūmu).
Al-Qasim said, "I searched for it and found that it is 'the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.'"
قُلْتُ: وَعِنْدِي أَنَّهُ: (اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ) جَمْعًا بَيْنَ الْحَدِيثَيْنِ؛ وَلِمَا رَوَيْنَا فِي كِتَابِ «الدُّعَاءِ» لِلْوَاحِدِيِّ عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، وَاللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ.
qultu: wa-ʿindī ʾannahu: (Allāhu lā ʾilāha ʾillā huwa al-ḥayyu al-qayyūmu) jamʿan bayna al-ḥadīthayni; wa-limā rawaynā fī kitābi «al-duʿāʾi» li-l-wāḥidiyyi ʿan yūnusa bni ʿabdi al-ʾaʿlā, wa-Allāhu taʿālā ʾaʿlamu.
I say: In my view, it is "Allah—there is no deity but Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining," reconciling the two hadiths and based on what we narrated in al-Wahidi's book al-Du'a from Yunus ibn 'Abd al-A'la. Allah Most High knows best.
وَالْقَاسِمُ هَذَا هُوَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الشَّامِيُّ التَّابِعِيُّ صَاحِبُ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ.
wa-l-qāsimu hādhā huwa ʾabū ʿabdi al-raḥmāni al-shāmiyyu al-tābiʿiyyu ṣāḥibu ʾabī ʾumāmata.
This al-Qasim is Abu 'Abd al-Rahman al-Shami, the Successor and companion of Abu Umamah.
(١) اخْتُلِفَ فِي تَعْيِينِ الِاسْمِ الْأَعْظَمِ عَلَى نَحْوِ أَرْبَعِينَ قَوْلًا، قَدْ أَفْرَدَهَا السُّيُوطِيُّ بِالتَّصْنِيفِ.
(1) ukhtulifa fī taʿyīni al-ismi al-ʾaʿẓami ʿalā naḥwi ʾarbaʿīna qawlan, qad ʾafradahā al-suyūṭiyyu bi-l-taṣnīfi.
(1) There are approximately forty different opinions identifying the Greatest Name, which al-Suyuti collected in a dedicated work.

The Most Beautiful Names of Allah
وَأَسْمَاءُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى الْحُسْنَى الَّتِي أُمِرْنَا بِالدُّعَاءِ بِهَا تِسْعَةٌ وَتِسْعُونَ اسْمًا، مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ [خ، م، ت، س، ق]، لَا يَحْفَظُهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ [خ].
wa-ʾasmāʾu Allāhi taʿālā al-ḥusnā allatī ʾumirnā bi-l-duʿāʾi bihā tisʿatun wa-tisʿūna isman, man ʾaḥṣāhā dakhala al-jannata [خ، م، ت، س، ق], lā yaḥfaẓuhā ʾaḥadun ʾillā dakhala al-jannata [خ].
The Most Beautiful Names of Allah Most High, by which we have been commanded to call upon Him, are ninety-nine names. Whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise [خ، م، ت، س، ق]; no one memorizes them without entering Paradise [خ].
هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ، الرَّحْمَنُ، الرَّحِيمُ، الْمَلِكُ، الْقُدُّوسُ، السَّلَامُ، الْمُؤْمِنُ، الْمُهَيْمِنُ، الْعَزِيزُ، الْجَبَّارُ، الْمُتَكَبِّرُ، الْخَالِقُ، الْبَارِئُ، الْمُصَوِّرُ، الْغَفَّارُ، الْقَهَّارُ، الْوَهَّابُ، الرَّزَّاقُ، الْفَتَّاحُ، الْعَلِيمُ، الْقَابِضُ، الْبَاسِطُ، الْخَافِضُ، الرَّافِعُ، الْمُعِزُّ، الْمُذِلُّ،

السَّمِيعُ، الْبَصِيرُ، الْحَكَمُ، الْعَدْلُ، اللَّطِيفُ، الْخَبِيرُ، الْحَلِيمُ، الْعَظِيمُ، الْغَفُورُ، الشَّكُورُ، الْعَلِيُّ، الْكَبِيرُ، الْحَفِيظُ، الْمُقِيتُ، الْحَسِيبُ، الْجَلِيلُ، الْكَرِيمُ، الرَّقِيبُ، الْمُجِيبُ، الْوَاسِعُ، الْحَكِيمُ، الْوَدُودُ، الْمَجِيدُ، الْبَاعِثُ، الشَّهِيدُ، الْحَقُّ، الْوَكِيلُ، الْقَوِيُّ، الْمَتِينُ، الْوَلِيُّ، الْحَمِيدُ، الْمُحْصِي،

وَسَمِعَ ﷺ رَجُلًا وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ. فَقَالَ: «قَدِ اسْتُجِيبَ لَكَ، فَسَلْ» [ت].
wa-samiʿa ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam rajulan wa-huwa yaqūlu: yā dhā al-jalāli wa-l-ʾikrāmi. fa-qāla: «qadi ustujība laka, fa-sal» [ت].
He (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man say, "O Possessor of Majesty and Honor." He said, "Your prayer has been answered, so ask." [ت].
«إِنَّ لِلَّهِ مَلَكًا مُوَكَّلًا بِمَنْ يَقُولُ: يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ، فَمَنْ قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا، قَالَ لَهُ الْمَلَكُ: إِنَّ أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْكَ، فَسَلْ» [مس].
«ʾinna li-llāhi malakan muwakkalan biman yaqūlu: yā ʾarḥama al-rāḥimīna, fa-man qālahā thalāthan, qāla lahu al-malaku: ʾinna ʾarḥama al-rāḥimīna qad ʾaqbala ʿalayka, fa-sal» [مس].
"Allah has appointed an angel to attend anyone who says, 'O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.' Whoever says it three times is told by the angel, 'The Most Merciful of those who show mercy has turned toward you, so ask.'" [مس].
وَمَرَّ ﷺ بِرَجُلٍ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: «سَلْ، فَقَدْ نَظَرَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ» [مس].
wa-marra ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam birajulin wa-huwa yaqūlu: yā ʾarḥama al-rāḥimīna, fa-qāla lahu: «sal, fa-qad naẓara Allāhu ʾilayka» [مس].
He (peace and blessings be upon him) passed a man who was saying, "O Most Merciful of those who show mercy," and told him, "Ask, for Allah has looked upon you." [مس].
«مَنْ سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الْجَنَّةَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، قَالَتِ الْجَنَّةُ: اللَّهُمَّ أَدْخِلْهُ الْجَنَّةَ. وَمَنِ اسْتَجَارَ مِنَ النَّارِ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ، قَالَتِ النَّارُ: اللَّهُمَّ أَجِرْهُ مِنَ النَّارِ» [ت، س، ق، حب، مس].
«man saʾala Allāha al-jannata thalātha marrātin, qālati al-jannatu: Allāhumma ʾadkhilhu al-jannata. wa-mani istajāra mina al-nāri thalātha marrātin, qālati al-nāru: Allāhumma ʾajirhu mina al-nāri» [ت، س، ق، حب، مس].
"Whoever asks Allah for Paradise three times, Paradise says, 'O Allah, admit him into Paradise.' Whoever seeks protection from the Fire three times, the Fire says, 'O Allah, protect him from the Fire.'" [ت، س، ق، حب، مس].
«مَنْ دَعَا بِهَؤُلَاءِ الْكَلِمَاتِ الْخَمْسِ لَمْ يَسْأَلِ اللَّهَ شَيْئًا إِلَّا أَعْطَاهُ: لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ» [ط، طس].
«man daʿā bi-hāʾulāʾi al-kalimāti al-khamsi lam yasʾali Allāha shayʾan ʾillā ʾaʿṭāhu: lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahu al-mulku wa-lahu al-ḥamdu, wa-huwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun, lā ʾilāha ʾillā Allāhu, wa-lā ḥawla wa-lā quwwata ʾillā bi-llāhi» [ط، طس].
"Whoever supplicates with these five phrases will receive whatever he asks of Allah: There is no deity but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs all dominion and all praise, and He has power over all things. There is no deity but Allah, and there is no power and no strength except through Allah." [ط، طس].

وَأَسْمَاءُ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى الْحُسْنَى الَّتِي أُمِرْنَا بِالدُّعَاءِ بِهَا تِسْعَةٌ وَتِسْعُونَ اسْمًا، مَنْ أَحْصَاهَا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ [خ، م، ت، س، ق]، لَا يَحْفَظُهَا أَحَدٌ إِلَّا دَخَلَ الْجَنَّةَ [خ].
wa-ʾasmāʾu Allāhi taʿālā al-ḥusnā allatī ʾumirnā bi-l-duʿāʾi bihā tisʿatun wa-tisʿūna isman, man ʾaḥṣāhā dakhala al-jannata [خ، م، ت، س، ق], lā yaḥfaẓuhā ʾaḥadun ʾillā dakhala al-jannata [خ].
The Most Beautiful Names of Allah Most High, by which we have been commanded to call upon Him, are ninety-nine names. Whoever enumerates them will enter Paradise [خ، م، ت، س، ق]; no one memorizes them without entering Paradise [خ].
