الْقِسْمُ الْخَامِسُ وَالْأَخِيرُ مِنَ الْأَدْعِيَةِ الْأَرْبَعَةِ وَالْخَمْسِينَ وَيَبْدَأُ بِدُعَاءِ يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ.

Al-qismu al-khāmisu wa-al-akhīru mina al-adʿiyati al-arbaʿati wa-al-khamsīna wayabdaʾu biduʿāʾi yawmi ʿarafata.

The fifth and final section of the fifty-four prayers, beginning with the prayer for the Day of ʿArafa.

تَرْتِيبُ الْقِرَاءَةِ: يَلِيهِ الْجُزْءُ ٧، الْمُلْحَقَاتُ.

تَنْسِيقٌ مُجَزَّأٌ لِلْقِرَاءَةِ مِنَ النُّسْخَةِ النَّصِّيَّةِ الْكَامِلَةِ. بَيَانَاتُ الطَّبْعَةِ وَمَصَادِرُ النَّصِّ فِي الْجُزْءِ ٩.

Tansīqun mujazzaʾun li-l-qirāʾati mina al-nuskhati al-naṣṣiyyati al-kāmilati. bayānātu al-ṭabʿati wamaṣādiru al-naṣṣi fī al-juzʾi 9.

Reading the three lines

Read each group from Arabic to transliteration to English. Short units continue the prayer in order; a unit boundary need not end a sentence. The three paragraphs in each group are kept together where practical. All eight prayers are included, including the complete long prayer for the Day of ʿArafa.

ā ī ū mark long vowels; ʿ marks ʿayn and ʾ marks hamza within a word. Initial hamza is represented by its vowel. ḥ ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ distinguish Arabic consonants; th dh kh sh gh represent single Arabic sounds. Doubled consonants are held longer.

The transliteration retains grammatical endings and the written article al. In connected recitation, initial helping vowels often disappear and al assimilates before sun letters. At a full pause, final short case vowels are normally dropped. A separating hyphen, as in umdud-hu, distinguishes adjacent consonants from a digraph.

God translates Allāh. “Muhammad and his family” renders Muḥammad wa-ālihi and Muḥammad wa-āli Muḥammad. The first-person prayers remain in the voice of the person praying. Bracketed English directions distinguish instructions in the source from the prayer itself.

The supplied Arabic is the base text. Diacritics, spacing and punctuation have been reviewed; supported repairs and material uncertainties are recorded in Text notes and sources. No missing passage has been reconstructed from memory.

فِي يَوْمِ عَرَفَةَ

Fī yawmi ʿarafata

On the Day of ʿArafa

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Al-ḥamdu li-llāhi rabbi al-ʿālamīna.

Praise belongs to God, Lord of all worlds.

اللَّٰهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ بَدِيعَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ، ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، رَبَّ الْأَرْبَابِ وَإِلَٰهَ كُلِّ مَأْلُوهٍ، وَخَالِقَ كُلِّ مَخْلُوقٍ، وَوَارِثَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ، لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ،

Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu badīʿa al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi, dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi, rabba al-arbābi wa-ilāha kulli maʾlūhin, wakhāliqa kulli makhlūqin, wawāritha kulli shayʾin, laysa kamithlihi shayʾun,

O God, all praise belongs to You, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Possessor of majesty and generosity, Lord of lords, God of all that is worshipped, Creator of every creature, and Inheritor of everything. Nothing is like Him,

وَلَا يَعْزُبُ عَنْهُ عِلْمُ شَيْءٍ، وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ مُحِيطٌ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ رَقِيبٌ، أَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْأَحَدُ الْمُتَوَحِّدُ الْفَرْدُ الْمُتَفَرِّدُ،

Walā yaʿzubu ʿanhu ʿilmu shayʾin, wahuwa bikulli shayʾin muḥīṭun, wahuwa ʿalā kulli shayʾin raqībun, anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-aḥadu al-mutawaḥḥidu al-fardu al-mutafarridu,

and knowledge of nothing escapes Him. He encompasses everything and watches over everything. You are God; there is no god but You, the One who is alone in His oneness, the Unique who is alone in His uniqueness.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْكَرِيمُ الْمُتَكَرِّمُ، الْعَظِيمُ الْمُتَعَظِّمُ، الْكَبِيرُ الْمُتَكَبِّرُ.

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-karīmu al-mutakarrimu, al-ʿaẓīmu al-mutaʿaẓẓimu, al-kabīru al-mutakabbiru.

You are God; there is no god but You, the Generous who shows generosity, the Magnificent whose greatness is manifest, the Great who possesses all grandeur.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْعَلِيُّ الْمُتَعَالِ، الشَّدِيدُ الْمِحَالِ.

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-ʿaliyyu al-mutaʿāli, al-shadīdu al-miḥāli.

You are God; there is no god but You, the High, the Exalted, whose power is overwhelming.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ الرَّحِيمُ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ.

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-raḥmānu al-raḥīmu al-ʿalīmu al-ḥakīmu.

You are God; there is no god but You, the All-Merciful, the Merciful, the All-Knowing, the Wise.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ الْقَدِيمُ الْخَبِيرُ، وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْكَرِيمُ الْأَكْرَمُ الدَّائِمُ الْأَدْوَمُ،

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-samīʿu al-baṣīru al-qadīmu al-khabīru, wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-karīmu al-akramu al-dāʾimu al-adwamu,

You are God; there is no god but You, the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing, the Beginningless, the Fully Aware. You are God; there is no god but You, the Generous, the Most Generous, the Enduring whose endurance never ceases.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الْأَوَّلُ قَبْلَ كُلِّ أَحَدٍ وَالْآخِرُ بَعْدَ كُلِّ عَدَدٍ، وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الدَّانِي فِي عُلُوِّهِ، وَالْعَالِي فِي دُنُوِّهِ،

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-awwalu qabla kulli aḥadin wa-al-ākhiru baʿda kulli ʿadadin, wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-dānī fī ʿuluwwihi, wa-al-ʿālī fī dunuwwihi,

You are God; there is no god but You, the First before anyone, the Last beyond every reckoning. You are God; there is no god but You, near in Your loftiness and exalted in Your nearness.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ ذُو الْبَهَاءِ وَالْمَجْدِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْحَمْدِ.

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta dhū al-bahāʾi wa-al-majdi wa-al-kibriyāʾi wa-al-ḥamdi.

You are God; there is no god but You, Possessor of splendour, glory, grandeur, and praise.

وَأَنْتَ اللَّٰهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ الَّذِي أَنْشَأْتَ الْأَشْيَاءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سِنْخٍ، وَصَوَّرْتَ مَا صَوَّرْتَ مِنْ غَيْرِ مِثَالٍ، وَاِبْتَدَعْتَ الْمُبْتَدَعَاتِ بِلَا اِحْتِذَاءٍ.

Wa-anta Allāhu lā ilāha illā anta al-ladhī anshaʾta al-ashyāʾa min ghayri sinkhin, waṣawwarta mā ṣawwarta min ghayri mithālin, wa-ibtadaʿta al-mubtadaʿāti bilā iḥtidhāʾin.

You are God; there is no god but You. You brought things into being without any prior substance, formed what You formed without a model, and originated all new things without copying anything.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي قَدَّرْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ تَقْدِيرًا وَيَسَّرْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ تَيْسِيرًا، وَدَبَّرْتَ مَا دُونَكَ تَدْبِيرًا.

Anta al-ladhī qaddarta kulla shayʾin taqdīran wayassarta kulla shayʾin taysīran, wadabbarta mā dūnaka tadbīran.

You determined the measure of everything, made everything ready for its course, and ordered all that is other than You.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي لَمْ يُعِنْكَ عَلَى خَلْقِكَ شَرِيكٌ وَلَمْ يُؤَازِرْكَ فِي أَمْرِكَ وَزِيرٌ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ مُشَاهِدٌ وَلَا نَظِيرٌ.

Wa-anta al-ladhī lam yuʿinka ʿalā khalqika sharīkun walam yuʾāzirka fī amrika wazīrun, walam yakun laka mushāhidun walā naẓīrun.

No partner helped You in Your creation, no minister supported You in Your command, and You had neither witness nor equal.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي أَرَدْتَ فَكَانَ حَتْمًا مَا أَرَدْتَ، وَقَضَيْتَ فَكَانَ عَدْلًا مَا قَضَيْتَ، وَحَكَمْتَ فَكَانَ نِصْفًا مَا حَكَمْتَ، أَنْتَ الَّذِي لَا يَحْوِيكَ مَكَانٌ وَلَمْ يَقُمْ لِسُلْطَانِكَ سُلْطَانٌ،

Anta al-ladhī aradta fakāna ḥatman mā aradta, waqaḍayta fakāna ʿadlan mā qaḍayta, waḥakamta fakāna niṣfan mā ḥakamta, anta al-ladhī lā yaḥwīka makānun walam yaqum lisulṭānika sulṭānun,

You willed, and what You willed was certain; You decreed, and Your decree was just; You judged, and Your judgement was fair. No place contains You, and no authority has stood against Your authority.

وَلَمْ يُعْيِكَ بُرْهَانٌ وَلَا بَيَانٌ.

Walam yuʿyika burhānun walā bayānun.

No proof or explanation has ever been beyond You.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي أَحْصَيْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدًا، وَجَعَلْتَ لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ أَمَدًا، وَقَدَّرْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ تَقْدِيرًا.

Anta al-ladhī aḥṣayta kulla shayʾin ʿadadan, wajaʿalta likulli shayʾin amadan, waqaddarta kulla shayʾin taqdīran.

You counted everything, appointed a term for everything, and determined the measure of everything.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي قَصُرَتِ الْأَوْهَامُ عَنْ ذَاتِيَّتِكَ، وَعَجَزَتِ الْأَفْهَامُ عَنْ كَيْفِيَّتِكَ، وَلَمْ تُدْرِكِ الْأَبْصَارُ مَوْضِعَ أَيْنِيَّتِكَ.

Anta al-ladhī qaṣurati al-awhāmu ʿan dhātiyyatika, waʿajazati al-afhāmu ʿan kayfiyyatika, walam tudriki al-abṣāru mawḍiʿa ayniyyatika.

Imaginations fall short of Your essence, understandings cannot grasp how You are, and eyes cannot discover a place where You are.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي لَا تُحَدُّ فَتَكُونَ مَحْدُودًا، وَلَمْ تُمَثَّلْ فَتَكُونَ مَوْجُودًا، وَلَمْ تَلِدْ فَتَكُونَ مَوْلُودًا.

Anta al-ladhī lā tuḥaddu fatakūna maḥdūdan, walam tumaththal fatakūna mawjūdan, walam talid fatakūna mawlūdan.

You cannot be defined and thereby confined, or represented by a likeness and thereby found as an object. You do not beget as one who is himself begotten.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي لَا ضِدَّ مَعَكَ فَيُعَانِدَكَ، وَلَا عِدْلَ فَيُكَاثِرَكَ، وَلَا نِدَّ لَكَ فَيُعَارِضَكَ.

Anta al-ladhī lā ḍidda maʿaka fayuʿānidaka, walā ʿidla fayukāthiraka, walā nidda laka fayuʿāriḍaka.

There is no opposite alongside You to contend with You, no equal to vie with You, and no rival to challenge You.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي اِبْتَدَأَ وَاِخْتَرَعَ وَاِسْتَحْدَثَ وَاِبْتَدَعَ وَأَحْسَنَ صُنْعَ مَا صَنَعَ، سُبْحَانَكَ!

Anta al-ladhī ibtadaʾa wa-ikhtaraʿa wa-istaḥdatha wa-ibtadaʿa wa-aḥsana ṣunʿa mā ṣanaʿa, subḥānaka!

You began, invented, brought forth, and originated, and You made well everything You made. Glory be to You!

مَا أَجَلَّ شَأْنَكَ، وَأَسْنَى فِي الْأَمَاكِنِ مَكَانَكَ، وَأَصْدَعَ بِالْحَقِّ فُرْقَانَكَ.

Mā ajalla shaʾnaka, wa-asnā fī al-amākini makānaka, wa-aṣdaʿa bi-al-ḥaqqi furqānaka.

How majestic is Your standing, how high Your station above all stations, and how clearly Your criterion proclaims the truth!

سُبْحَانَكَ مِنْ لَطِيفٍ مَا أَلْطَفَكَ، وَرَؤُوفٍ مَا أَرْأَفَكَ، وَحَكِيمٍ مَا أَعْرَفَكَ!

Subḥānaka min laṭīfin mā alṭafaka, waraʾūfin mā arʾafaka, waḥakīmin mā aʿrafaka!

Glory be to You! How subtle You are in Your kindness, how tender in Your compassion, how discerning in Your wisdom!

سُبْحَانَكَ مِنْ مَلِيكٍ مَا أَمْنَعَكَ، وَجَوَادٍ مَا أَوْسَعَكَ، وَرَفِيعٍ مَا أَرْفَعَكَ، ذُو الْبَهَاءِ وَالْمَجْدِ وَالْكِبْرِيَاءِ وَالْحَمْدِ.

Subḥānaka min malīkin mā amnaʿaka, wajawādin mā awsaʿaka, warafīʿin mā arfaʿaka, dhū al-bahāʾi wa-al-majdi wa-al-kibriyāʾi wa-al-ḥamdi.

Glory be to You! How unassailable a Sovereign, how boundless a Giver, how exalted the Most High! Yours are splendour, glory, grandeur, and praise.

سُبْحَانَكَ بَسَطْتَ بِالْخَيْرَاتِ يَدَكَ وَعُرِفَتِ الْهِدَايَةُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، فَمَنِ اِلْتَمَسَكَ لِدِينٍ أَوْ دُنْيَا وَجَدَكَ.

Subḥānaka basaṭta bi-al-khayrāti yadaka waʿurifati al-hidāyatu min ʿindika, famani iltamasaka lidīnin aw dunyā wajadaka.

Glory be to You! You have opened Your hand with good things, and guidance is known to come from You. Whoever seeks You for the sake of religion or this world finds You.

سُبْحَانَكَ خَضَعَ لَكَ مَنْ جَرَى فِي عِلْمِكَ، وَخَشَعَ لِعَظَمَتِكَ مَا دُونَ عَرْشِكَ، وَاِنْقَادَ لِلتَّسْلِيمِ لَكَ كُلُّ خَلْقِكَ.

Subḥānaka khaḍaʿa laka man jarā fī ʿilmika, wakhashaʿa liʿaẓamatika mā dūna ʿarshika, wa-inqāda li-l-taslīmi laka kullu khalqika.

Glory be to You! All who are within Your knowledge bow to You; all beneath Your Throne stand humbled before Your greatness; all Your creation submits to You.

سُبْحَانَكَ لَا تُحَسُّ، وَلَا تُجَسُّ، وَلَا تُمَسُّ، وَلَا تُكَادُ، وَلَا تُمَاطُ، وَلَا تُنَازَعُ، وَلَا تُجَارَى، وَلَا تُمَارَى، وَلَا تُخَادَعُ، وَلَا تُمَاكَرُ.

Subḥānaka lā tuḥassu, walā tujassu, walā tumassu, walā tukādu, walā tumāṭu, walā tunāzaʿu, walā tujārā, walā tumārā, walā tukhādaʿu, walā tumākaru.

Glory be to You! You cannot be perceived by the senses, examined by touch, or physically touched; You cannot be plotted against, removed, contested, matched, disputed, deceived, or outwitted.

سُبْحَانَكَ سَبِيلُكَ جَدَدٌ، وَأَمْرُكَ رَشَدٌ، وَأَنْتَ حَيٌّ صَمَدٌ.

Subḥānaka sabīluka jadadun, wa-amruka rashadun, wa-anta ḥayyun ṣamadun.

Glory be to You! Your way is level and clear, Your command is sound guidance, and You are the Living, the One on whom all depend.

سُبْحَانَكَ قَوْلُكَ حُكْمٌ، وَقَضَاؤُكَ حَتْمٌ، وَإِرَادَتُكَ عَزْمٌ.

Subḥānaka qawluka ḥukmun, waqaḍāʾuka ḥatmun, wa-irādatuka ʿazmun.

Glory be to You! Your word is judgement, Your decree is certain, and Your will is resolute.

سُبْحَانَكَ لَا رَادَّ لِمَشِيَّتِكَ، وَلَا مُبَدِّلَ لِكَلِمَاتِكَ.

Subḥānaka lā rādda limashiyyatika, walā mubaddila likalimātika.

Glory be to You! None can turn back Your will or change Your words.

سُبْحَانَكَ بَاهِرَ الْآيَاتِ، فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ بَارِئَ النَّسَمَاتِ.

Subḥānaka bāhira al-āyāti, fāṭira al-samāwāti bāriʾa al-nasamāti.

Glory be to You, whose signs are dazzling, Originator of the heavens, Creator of living souls!

لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا يَدُومُ بِدَوَامِكَ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا خَالِدًا بِنِعْمَتِكَ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا يُوَازِي صُنْعَكَ، وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا يَزِيدُ عَلَى رِضَاكَ،

Laka al-ḥamdu ḥamdan yadūmu bidawāmika, walaka al-ḥamdu ḥamdan khālidan biniʿmatika, walaka al-ḥamdu ḥamdan yuwāzī ṣunʿaka, walaka al-ḥamdu ḥamdan yazīdu ʿalā riḍāka,

To You belongs praise that endures as You endure; to You belongs praise made everlasting through Your favour; to You belongs praise that matches Your handiwork; to You belongs praise that goes beyond what pleases You.

وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدًا مَعَ حَمْدِ كُلِّ حَامِدٍ، وَشُكْرًا يَقْصُرُ عَنْهُ شُكْرُ كُلِّ شَاكِرٍ، حَمْدًا لَا يَنْبَغِي إِلَّا لَكَ، وَلَا يُتَقَرَّبُ بِهِ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ، حَمْدًا يُسْتَدَامُ بِهِ الْأَوَّلُ،

Walaka al-ḥamdu ḥamdan maʿa ḥamdi kulli ḥāmidin, washukran yaqṣuru ʿanhu shukru kulli shākirin, ḥamdan lā yanbaghī illā laka, walā yutaqarrabu bihi illā ilayka, ḥamdan yustadāmu bihi al-awwalu,

To You belongs praise joined to the praise of everyone who praises, and gratitude beyond the gratitude of everyone who gives thanks: praise befitting none but You, through which nearness is sought to none but You; praise by which earlier blessings are sustained,

وَيُسْتَدْعَى بِهِ دَوَامُ الْآخِرِ، حَمْدًا يَتَضَاعَفُ عَلَى كُرُورِ الْأَزْمِنَةِ، وَيَتَزَايَدُ أَضْعَافًا مُتَرَادِفَةً، حَمْدًا يَعْجِزُ عَنْ إِحْصَائِهِ الْحَفَظَةُ، وَيَزِيدُ عَلَى مَا أَحْصَتْهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ الْكَتَبَةُ،

Wayustadʿā bihi dawāmu al-ākhiri, ḥamdan yataḍāʿafu ʿalā kurūri al-azminati, wayatazāyadu aḍʿāfan mutarādifatan, ḥamdan yaʿjizu ʿan iḥṣāʾihi al-ḥafaẓatu, wayazīdu ʿalā mā aḥṣat-hu fī kitābika al-katabatu,

and the continuance of later blessings is sought; praise that multiplies as ages return and increases in successive multiples; praise that the recording guardians cannot count, exceeding what the scribes have entered in Your record;

حَمْدًا يُوَازِنُ عَرْشَكَ الْمَجِيدَ، وَيُعَادِلُ كُرْسِيَّكَ الرَّفِيعَ، حَمْدًا يَكْمُلُ لَدَيْكَ ثَوَابُهُ، وَيَسْتَغْرِقُ كُلَّ جَزَاءٍ جَزَاؤُهُ، حَمْدًا ظَاهِرُهُ وَفْقٌ لِبَاطِنِهِ، وَبَاطِنُهُ وَفْقٌ لِصِدْقِ النِّيَّةِ،

Ḥamdan yuwāzinu ʿarshaka al-majīda, wayuʿādilu kursiyyaka al-rafīʿa, ḥamdan yakmulu ladayka thawābuhu, wayastaghriqu kulla jazāʾin jazāʾuhu, ḥamdan ẓāhiruhu wafqun libāṭinihi, wabāṭinuhu wafqun liṣidqi al-niyyati,

praise equal in weight to Your glorious Throne and matching Your exalted Footstool; praise whose reward is complete with You and embraces every reward; praise whose outward expression agrees with its inward reality, and whose inward reality agrees with sincere intention;

حَمْدًا لَمْ يَحْمَدْكَ خَلْقٌ مِثْلَهُ، وَلَا يَعْرِفُ أَحَدٌ سِوَاكَ فَضْلَهُ، حَمْدًا يُعَانُ مَنِ اِجْتَهَدَ فِي تَعْدِيدِهِ، وَيُؤَيَّدُ مَنْ أَغْرَقَ نَزْعًا فِي تَوْفِيَتِهِ،

Ḥamdan lam yaḥmadka khalqun mithlahu, walā yaʿrifu aḥadun siwāka faḍlahu, ḥamdan yuʿānu mani ijtahada fī taʿdīdihi, wayuʾayyadu man aghraqa nazʿan fī tawfiyatihi,

praise unlike any with which a creature has praised You, whose worth no one but You knows; praise whose earnest counter is helped, and whose most strenuous effort to render it fully is supported;

حَمْدًا يَجْمَعُ مَا خَلَقْتَ مِنَ الْحَمْدِ، وَيَنْتَظِمُ مَا أَنْتَ خَالِقُهُ مِنْ بَعْدُ، حَمْدًا لَا حَمْدَ أَقْرَبُ إِلَى قَوْلِكَ مِنْهُ، وَلَا أَحْمَدَ مِمَّنْ يَحْمَدُكَ بِهِ،

Ḥamdan yajmaʿu mā khalaqta mina al-ḥamdi, wayantaẓimu mā anta khāliquhu min baʿdu, ḥamdan lā ḥamda aqrabu ilā qawlika minhu, walā aḥmada mimman yaḥmaduka bihi,

praise that gathers all the praise You have created and embraces all You will create hereafter; praise closer than any other to Your own word, offered by one more worthy of praise than any other who praises You;

حَمْدًا يُوجِبُ بِكَرَمِكَ الْمَزِيدَ بِوُفُورِهِ وَتَصِلُهُ بِمَزِيدٍ بَعْدَ مَزِيدٍ طَوْلًا مِنْكَ، حَمْدًا يَجِبُ لِكَرَمِ وَجْهِكَ، وَيُقَابِلُ عِزَّ جَلَالِكَ.

Ḥamdan yūjibu bikaramika al-mazīda biwufūrihi wataṣiluhu bimazīdin baʿda mazīdin ṭawlan minka, ḥamdan yajibu likarami wajhika, wayuqābilu ʿizza jalālika.

praise whose abundance, through Your generosity, calls forth still more, and which You join to increase after increase out of Your bounty; praise worthy of Your noble Face and answering to the might of Your majesty.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُنْتَجَبِ، الْمُصْطَفَى، الْمُكَرَّمِ، الْمُقَرَّبِ، أَفْضَلَ صَلَوَاتِكَ، وَبَارِكْ عَلَيْهِ أَتَمَّ بَرَكَاتِكَ، وَتَرَحَّمْ عَلَيْهِ أَمْتَعَ رَحَمَاتِكَ.

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin al-muntajabi, al-muṣṭafā, al-mukarrami, al-muqarrabi, afḍala ṣalawātika, wabārik ʿalayhi atamma barakātika, wataraḥḥam ʿalayhi amtaʿa raḥamātika.

My Lord, bestow Your finest blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the chosen, the elect, the honoured, the one brought near. Bless him with Your fullest benedictions and show him Your most sustaining mercies.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، صَلَاةً زَاكِيَةً، لَا تَكُونُ صَلَاةٌ أَزْكَى مِنْهَا، وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةً نَامِيَةً، لَا تَكُونُ صَلَاةٌ أَنْمَى مِنْهَا، وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةً رَاضِيَةً،

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, ṣalātan zākiyatan, lā takūnu ṣalātun azkā minhā, waṣalli ʿalayhi ṣalātan nāmiyatan, lā takūnu ṣalātun anmā minhā, waṣalli ʿalayhi ṣalātan rāḍiyatan,

My Lord, bless Muhammad and his family with a pure blessing beyond which none is purer; bless him with an increasing blessing beyond which none increases more; bless him with a pleasing blessing

لَا تَكُونُ صَلَاةٌ فَوْقَهَا.

Lā takūnu ṣalātun fawqahā.

above which no blessing stands.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، صَلَاةً تُرْضِيهِ وَتَزِيدُ عَلَى رِضَاهُ، وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةً تُرْضِيكَ وَتَزِيدُ عَلَى رِضَاكَ لَهُ، وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ صَلَاةً لَا تَرْضَى لَهُ إِلَّا بِهَا،

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, ṣalātan turḍīhi watazīdu ʿalā riḍāhu, waṣalli ʿalayhi ṣalātan turḍīka watazīdu ʿalā riḍāka lahu, waṣalli ʿalayhi ṣalātan lā tarḍā lahu illā bihā,

My Lord, bless Muhammad and his family with a blessing that pleases him and goes beyond his pleasure. Bless him with a blessing that pleases You and goes beyond Your pleasure in him. Bless him with a blessing other than which You would accept none for him,

وَلَا تَرَى غَيْرَهُ لَهَا أَهْلًا.

Walā tarā ghayrahu lahā ahlan.

and for which You regard no one else as worthy.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، صَلَاةً تُجَاوِزُ رِضْوَانَكَ، وَيَتَّصِلُ اِتِّصَالُهَا بِبَقَائِكَ، وَلَا يَنْفَدُ كَمَا لَا تَنْفَدُ كَلِمَاتُكَ.

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, ṣalātan tujāwizu riḍwānaka, wayattaṣilu ittiṣāluhā bibaqāʾika, walā yanfadu kamā lā tanfadu kalimātuka.

My Lord, bless Muhammad and his family with a blessing that goes beyond the measure of Your good pleasure, whose continuity is joined to Your abiding, and which is never exhausted, just as Your words are never exhausted.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَآلِهِ صَلَاةً تَنْتَظِمُ صَلَوَاتِ مَلَائِكَتِكَ وَأَنْبِيَائِكَ وَرُسُلِكَ وَأَهْلِ طَاعَتِكَ.

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-ālihi ṣalātan tantaẓimu ṣalawāti malāʾikatika wa-anbiyāʾika warusulika wa-ahli ṭāʿatika.

My Lord, bless Muhammad and his family, and his family, with a blessing encompassing the blessings of Your angels, Your prophets, Your messengers, and those who obey You.

وَتَشْتَمِلُ عَلَى صَلَوَاتِ عِبَادِكَ مِنْ جِنِّكَ وَإِنْسِكَ وَأَهْلِ إِجَابَتِكَ، وَتَجْتَمِعُ عَلَى صَلَاةِ كُلِّ مَنْ ذَرَأْتَ وَبَرَأْتَ مِنْ أَصْنَافِ خَلْقِكَ.

Watashtamilu ʿalā ṣalawāti ʿibādika min jinnika wa-insika wa-ahli ijābatika, watajtamiʿu ʿalā ṣalāti kulli man dharaʾta wabaraʾta min aṣnāfi khalqika.

Let it include the blessings of Your servants among jinn and human beings, and all who answer Your call, gathering together the blessing of everyone You have brought forth and created among all the kinds of Your creatures.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ صَلَاةً تُحِيطُ بِكُلِّ صَلَاةٍ سَالِفَةٍ وَمُسْتَأْنَفَةٍ، وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ صَلَاةً مَرْضِيَّةً لَكَ وَلِمَنْ دُونَكَ،

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalayhi wa-ālihi ṣalātan tuḥīṭu bikulli ṣalātin sālifatin wamustaʾnafatin, waṣalli ʿalayhi waʿalā ālihi ṣalātan marḍiyyatan laka waliman dūnaka,

My Lord, bless him and his family with a blessing embracing every blessing, past and yet to come. Bless him and his family with a blessing pleasing to You and to all beneath You,

وَتُنْشِئُ مَعَ ذَٰلِكَ صَلَوَاتٍ تُضَاعِفُ مَعَهَا تِلْكَ الصَّلَوَاتِ عِنْدَهَا، وَتَزِيدُهَا عَلَى كُرُورِ الْأَيَّامِ زِيَادَةً فِي تَضَاعِيفَ لَا يَعُدُّهَا غَيْرُكَ.

Watunshiʾu maʿa dhālika ṣalawātin tuḍāʿifu maʿahā tilka al-ṣalawāti ʿindahā, watazīduhā ʿalā kurūri al-ayyāmi ziyādatan fī taḍāʿīfa lā yaʿudduhā ghayruka.

and bring forth alongside it blessings beside which those blessings are multiplied. Increase them as the days return, in multiples no one but You can count.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى أَطَائِبِ أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ الَّذِينَ اِخْتَرْتَهُمْ لِأَمْرِكَ، وَجَعَلْتَهُمْ خَزَنَةَ عِلْمِكَ، وَحَفَظَةَ دِينِكَ، وَخُلَفَاءَكَ فِي أَرْضِكَ، وَحُجَجَكَ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ، وَطَهَّرْتَهُمْ مِنَ الرِّجْسِ وَالدَّنَسِ تَطْهِيرًا بِإِرَادَتِكَ،

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalā aṭāʾibi ahli baytihi al-ladhīna ikhtartahum liʾamrika, wajaʿaltahum khazanata ʿilmika, waḥafaẓata dīnika, wakhulafāʾaka fī arḍika, waḥujajaka ʿalā ʿibādika, waṭahhartahum mina al-rijsi wa-al-danasi taṭhīran biʾirādatika,

My Lord, bless the purest members of his household, whom You chose for Your purpose, made keepers of Your knowledge, guardians of Your religion, Your successors on earth, and Your proofs to Your servants. By Your will, You purified them completely of impurity and defilement,

وَجَعَلْتَهُمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ إِلَيْكَ وَالْمَسْلَكَ إِلَى جَنَّتِكَ، رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ صَلَاةً تُجْزِلُ لَهُمْ بِهَا مِنْ نِحَلِكَ وَكَرَامَتِكَ، وَتُكْمِلُ لَهُمُ الْأَشْيَاءَ مِنْ عَطَايَاكَ وَنَوَافِلِكَ،

Wajaʿaltahumu al-wasīlata ilayka wa-al-maslaka ilā jannatika, rabbi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi ṣalātan tujzilu lahum bihā min niḥalika wakarāmatika, watukmilu lahumu al-ashyāʾa min ʿaṭāyāka wanawāfilika,

and made them the means of approach to You and the path to Your Garden. My Lord, bless Muhammad and his family with a blessing through which You lavish Your gifts and honour upon them, complete for them the range of Your gifts and freely given favours,

وَتُوَفِّرُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْحَظَّ مِنْ عَوَائِدِكَ وَفَوَائِدِكَ.

Watuwaffiru ʿalayhimu al-ḥaẓẓa min ʿawāʾidika wafawāʾidika.

and grant them a full share of Your returning benefits and blessings.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمْ صَلَاةً لَا أَمَدَ فِي أَوَّلِهَا، وَلَا غَايَةَ لِأَمَدِهَا، وَلَا نِهَايَةَ لِآخِرِهَا.

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalayhi waʿalayhim ṣalātan lā amada fī awwalihā, walā ghāyata liʾamadihā, walā nihāyata liʾākhirihā.

My Lord, bless him and them with a blessing whose beginning has no appointed limit, whose duration has no boundary, and whose end never comes.

رَبِّ صَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ زِنَةَ عَرْشِكَ وَمَا دُونَهُ، وَمِلْءَ سَمَاوَاتِكَ وَمَا فَوْقَهُنَّ، وَعَدَدَ أَرَضِيكَ، وَمَا تَحْتَهُنَّ، وَمَا بَيْنَهُنَّ، صَلَاةً تُقَرِّبُهُمْ مِنْكَ زُلْفَى وَتَكُونُ لَكَ وَلَهُمْ رِضًى،

Rabbi ṣalli ʿalayhim zinata ʿarshika wamā dūnahu, wamilʾa samāwātika wamā fawqahunna, waʿadada araḍīka, wamā taḥtahunna, wamā baynahunna, ṣalātan tuqarribuhum minka zulfā watakūnu laka walahum riḍan,

My Lord, bless them to the weight of Your Throne and all beneath it, to the fullness of Your heavens and all above them, and to the number of Your earths and all beneath and between them: a blessing bringing them ever nearer to You, pleasing to You and to them,

وَمُتَّصِلَةً بِنَظَائِرِهِنَّ أَبَدًا.

Wamuttaṣilatan binaẓāʾirihinna abadan.

and joined forever to others like it.

اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَيَّدْتَ دِينَكَ فِي كُلِّ أَوَانٍ بِإِمَامٍ أَقَمْتَهُ عَلَمًا لِعِبَادِكَ وَمَنَارًا فِي بِلَادِكَ، بَعْدَ أَنْ وَصَلْتَ حَبْلَهُ بِحَبْلِكَ، وَجَعَلْتَهُ الذَّرِيعَةَ إِلَى رِضْوَانِكَ، وَاِفْتَرَضْتَ طَاعَتَهُ، وَحَذَّرْتَ مَعْصِيَتَهُ،

Allāhumma innaka ayyadta dīnaka fī kulli awānin biʾimāmin aqamtahu ʿalaman liʿibādika wamanāran fī bilādika, baʿda an waṣalta ḥablahu biḥablika, wajaʿaltahu al-dharīʿata ilā riḍwānika, wa-iftaraḍta ṭāʿatahu, waḥadhdharta maʿṣiyatahu,

O God, in every age You have strengthened Your religion through an Imam whom You established as a sign for Your servants and a beacon in Your lands. You joined his bond to Yours, made him the means of attaining Your good pleasure, required obedience to him, and warned against disobeying him.

وَأَمَرْتَ بِامْتِثَالِ أَوَامِرِهِ وَالِانْتِهَاءِ عِنْدَ نَهْيِهِ، وَأَلَّا يَتَقَدَّمَهُ مُتَقَدِّمٌ، وَلَا يَتَأَخَّرَ عَنْهُ مُتَأَخِّرٌ، فَهُوَ عِصْمَةُ اللَّائِذِينَ، وَكَهْفُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَعُرْوَةُ الْمُتَمَسِّكِينَ، وَبَهَاءُ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Wa-amarta bimtithāli awāmirihi wa-al-intihāʾi ʿinda nahyihi, wa-allā yataqaddamahu mutaqaddimun, walā yataʾakhkhara ʿanhu mutaʾakhkhirun, fahuwa ʿiṣmatu al-lāʾidhīna, wakahfu al-muʾminīna, waʿurwatu al-mutamassikīna, wabahāʾu al-ʿālamīna.

You commanded that his orders be followed and his prohibitions observed, that no one go ahead of him or fall behind him. He is the protection of those who seek refuge, the shelter of believers, the handhold of those who hold fast, and the splendour of the worlds.

اللَّٰهُمَّ فَأَوْزِعْ لِوَلِيِّكَ شُكْرَ مَا أَنْعَمْتَ بِهِ عَلَيْهِ، وَأَوْزِعْنَا مِثْلَهُ فِيهِ، وَآتِهِ مِنْ لَدُنْكَ سُلْطَانًا نَصِيرًا، وَاِفْتَحْ لَهُ فَتْحًا يَسِيرًا، وَأَعِنْهُ بِرُكْنِكَ الْأَعَزِّ، وَاُشْدُدْ أَزْرَهُ، وَقَوِّ عَضُدَهُ،

Allāhumma fa-awziʿ liwaliyyika shukra mā anʿamta bihi ʿalayhi, wa-awziʿnā mithlahu fīhi, wa-ātihi min ladunka sulṭānan naṣīran, wa-iftaḥ lahu fatḥan yasīran, wa-aʿinhu biruknika al-aʿazzi, wa-ushdud azrahu, waqawwi ʿaḍudahu,

O God, inspire Your friend to give thanks for Your favours to him, and inspire us to give thanks for him. Grant him supporting authority from Yourself, open an easy victory for him, help him with Your mightiest support, strengthen his back, and make his arm firm.

وَرَاعِهِ بِعَيْنِكَ، وَاِحْمِهِ بِحِفْظِكَ، وَاُنْصُرْهُ بِمَلَائِكَتِكَ، وَاُمْدُدْهُ بِجُنْدِكَ الْأَغْلَبِ وَأَقِمْ بِهِ كِتَابَكَ وَحُدُودَكَ، وَشَرَائِعَكَ وَسُنَنَ رَسُولِكَ صَلَوَاتُكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ،

Warāʿihi biʿaynika, wa-iḥmihi biḥifẓika, wa-unṣurhu bimalāʾikatika, wa-umdud-hu bijundika al-aghlabi wa-aqim bihi kitābaka waḥudūdaka, washarāʾiʿaka wasunana rasūlika ṣalawātuka Allāhumma ʿalayhi wa-ālihi,

Watch over him with Your eye, guard him with Your protection, support him with Your angels, and reinforce him with Your all-conquering hosts. Through him uphold Your Book, Your limits, Your laws, and the ways of Your Messenger—Your blessings, O God, be upon him and his family.

وَأَحْيِ بِهِ مَا أَمَاتَهُ الظَّالِمُونَ مِنْ مَعَالِمِ دِينِكَ، وَاُجْلُ بِهِ صَدَاءَ الْجَوْرِ عَنْ طَرِيقَتِكَ، وَأَبِنْ بِهِ الضَّرَّاءَ مِنْ سَبِيلِكَ، وَأَزِلْ بِهِ النَّاكِبِينَ عَنْ صِرَاطِكَ،

Wa-aḥyi bihi mā amātahu al-ẓālimūna min maʿālimi dīnika, wa-ujlu bihi ṣadāʾa al-jawri ʿan ṭarīqatika, wa-abin bihi al-ḍarrāʾa min sabīlika, wa-azil bihi al-nākibīna ʿan ṣirāṭika,

Through him revive the signs of Your religion that wrongdoers have put to death, clear the rust of injustice from Your way, remove affliction from Your path, and turn away those who stray from Your straight road.

وَاِمْحَقْ بِهِ بُغَاةَ قَصْدِكَ عِوَجًا، وَأَلِنْ جَانِبَهُ لِأَوْلِيَائِكَ، وَاُبْسُطْ يَدَهُ عَلَى أَعْدَائِكَ، وَهَبْ لَنَا رَأْفَتَهُ وَرَحْمَتَهُ وَتَعَطُّفَهُ وَتَحَنُّنَهُ، وَاِجْعَلْنَا لَهُ سَامِعِينَ مُطِيعِينَ، وَفِي رِضَاهُ سَاعِينَ،

Wa-imḥaq bihi bughāta qaṣdika ʿiwajan, wa-alin jānibahu liʾawliyāʾika, wa-ubsuṭ yadahu ʿalā aʿdāʾika, wahab lanā raʾfatahu waraḥmatahu wataʿaṭṭufahu wataḥannunahu, wa-ijʿalnā lahu sāmiʿīna muṭīʿīna, wafī riḍāhu sāʿīna,

Through him overthrow those who seek to make Your straight course crooked. Make him gentle towards Your friends and powerful against Your enemies. Grant us his compassion, mercy, kindness, and tenderness. Make us listen to him and obey him, striving to please him,

وَإِلَى نُصْرَتِهِ وَالْمُدَافَعَةِ عَنْهُ مُكْنِفِينَ، وَإِلَيْكَ وَإِلَى رَسُولِكَ صَلَوَاتُكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ بِذَٰلِكَ مُتَقَرِّبِينَ.

Wa-ilā nuṣratihi wa-al-mudāfaʿati ʿanhu muknifīna, wa-ilayka wa-ilā rasūlika ṣalawātuka Allāhumma ʿalayhi wa-ālihi bidhālika mutaqarribīna.

gathering to support and defend him, and through this drawing near to You and to Your Messenger—Your blessings, O God, be upon him and his family.

اللَّٰهُمَّ وَصَلِّ عَلَى أَوْلِيَائِهِمُ الْمُعْتَرِفِينَ بِمَقَامِهِمُ، الْمُتَّبِعِينَ مَنْهَجَهُمُ، الْمُقْتَفِينَ آثَارَهُمُ، الْمُسْتَمْسِكِينَ بِعُرْوَتِهِمُ، الْمُتَمَسِّكِينَ بِوِلَايَتِهِمُ، الْمُؤْتَمِّينَ بِإِمَامَتِهِمُ، الْمُسَلِّمِينَ لِأَمْرِهِمُ الْمُجْتَهِدِينَ فِي طَاعَتِهِمُ، الْمُنْتَظِرِينَ أَيَّامَهُمُ، الْمَادِّينَ إِلَيْهِمْ أَعْيُنَهُمُ،

Allāhumma waṣalli ʿalā awliyāʾihimu al-muʿtarifīna bimaqāmihimu, al-muttabiʿīna manhajahumu, al-muqtafīna āthārahumu, al-mustamsikīna biʿurwatihimu, al-mutamassikīna biwilāyatihimu, al-muʾtammīna biʾimāmatihimu, al-musallimīna liʾamrihimu al-mujtahidīna fī ṭāʿatihimu, al-muntaẓirīna ayyāmahumu, al-māddīna ilayhim aʿyunahumu,

O God, bless their friends who acknowledge their station, follow their path and their footsteps, hold fast to their handhold and their guardianship, accept their leadership, submit to their command, work earnestly to obey them, await their days, and turn their eyes towards them,

الصَّلَوَاتِ الْمُبَارَكَاتِ الزَّاكِيَاتِ النَّامِيَاتِ الْغَادِيَاتِ، الرَّائِحَاتِ.

Al-ṣalawāti al-mubārakāti al-zākiyāti al-nāmiyāti al-ghādiyāti, al-rāʾiḥāti.

with blessed, pure, ever-growing blessings, coming morning and evening.

وَسَلِّمْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَعَلَى أَرْوَاحِهِمْ، وَاِجْمَعْ عَلَى التَّقْوَى أَمْرَهُمْ، وَأَصْلِحْ لَهُمْ شُؤُونَهُمْ، وَتُبْ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ وَخَيْرُ الْغَافِرِينَ،

Wasallim ʿalayhim waʿalā arwāḥihim, wa-ijmaʿ ʿalā al-taqwā amrahum, wa-aṣliḥ lahum shuʾūnahum, watub ʿalayhim innaka anta al-tawwābu al-raḥīmu wakhayru al-ghāfirīna,

Grant peace to them and to their spirits. Unite their affairs in reverence for You, set their circumstances right, and turn towards them in forgiveness. You are the Ever-Relenting, the Merciful, and the best of those who forgive.

وَاِجْعَلْنَا مَعَهُمْ فِي دَارِ السَّلَامِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Wa-ijʿalnā maʿahum fī dāri al-salāmi biraḥmatika yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

Gather us with them in the Abode of Peace through Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

اللَّٰهُمَّ هَٰذَا يَوْمُ عَرَفَةَ، يَوْمٌ شَرَّفْتَهُ وَكَرَّمْتَهُ وَعَظَّمْتَهُ، نَشَرْتَ فِيهِ رَحْمَتَكَ، وَمَنَنْتَ فِيهِ بِعَفْوِكَ وَأَجْزَلْتَ فِيهِ عَطِيَّتَكَ، وَتَفَضَّلْتَ بِهِ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ.

Allāhumma hādhā yawmu ʿarafata, yawmun sharraftahu wakarramtahu waʿaẓẓamtahu, nasharta fīhi raḥmataka, wamananta fīhi biʿafwika wa-ajzalta fīhi ʿaṭiyyataka, watafaḍḍalta bihi ʿalā ʿibādika.

O God, this is the Day of ʿArafa, a day You have ennobled, honoured, and magnified. On it You have spread Your mercy, bestowed Your pardon, made Your giving abundant, and favoured Your servants through it.

اللَّٰهُمَّ وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ الَّذِي أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ قَبْلَ خَلْقِكَ لَهُ، وَبَعْدَ خَلْقِكَ إِيَّاهُ، فَجَعَلْتَهُ مِمَّنْ هَدَيْتَهُ لِدِينِكَ، وَوَفَّقْتَهُ لِحَقِّكَ، وَعَصَمْتَهُ بِحَبْلِكَ، وَأَدْخَلْتَهُ فِي حِزْبِكَ، وَأَرْشَدْتَهُ لِمُوَالَاةِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ،

Allāhumma wa-anā ʿabduka al-ladhī anʿamta ʿalayhi qabla khalqika lahu, wabaʿda khalqika iyyāhu, fajaʿaltahu mimman hadaytahu lidīnika, wawaffaqtahu liḥaqqika, waʿaṣamtahu biḥablika, wa-adkhaltahu fī ḥizbika, wa-arshadtahu limuwālāti awliyāʾika,

O God, I am Your servant whom You favoured before creating him and after bringing him into being. You included him among those You guided to Your religion, enabled to fulfil what is due to You, protected through Your bond, admitted to Your company, and directed towards friendship with Your friends

وَمُعَادَاةِ أَعْدَائِكَ، ثُمَّ أَمَرْتَهُ فَلَمْ يَأْتَمِرْ، وَزَجَرْتَهُ فَلَمْ يَنْزَجِرْ، وَنَهَيْتَهُ عَنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ فَخَالَفَ أَمْرَكَ إِلَى نَهْيِكَ، لَا مُعَانَدَةً لَكَ وَلَا اِسْتِكْبَارًا عَلَيْكَ،

Wamuʿādāti aʿdāʾika, thumma amartahu falam yaʾtamir, wazajartahu falam yanzajir, wanahaytahu ʿan maʿṣiyatika fakhālafa amraka ilā nahyika, lā muʿānadatan laka walā istikbāran ʿalayka,

and enmity towards Your enemies. Then You commanded him, but he did not obey; You restrained him, but he did not hold back. You forbade him to disobey You, yet he abandoned Your command for what You prohibited—not out of opposition to You or arrogance towards You,

بَلْ دَعَاهُ هَوَاهُ إِلَى مَا زَيَّلْتَهُ، وَإِلَى مَا حَذَّرْتَهُ، وَأَعَانَهُ عَلَى ذَٰلِكَ عَدُوُّكَ وَعَدُوُّهُ، فَأَقْدَمَ عَلَيْهِ عَارِفًا بِوَعِيدِكَ، رَاجِيًا لِعَفْوِكَ، وَاثِقًا بِتَجَاوُزِكَ،

Bal daʿāhu hawāhu ilā mā zayyaltahu, wa-ilā mā ḥadhdhartahu, wa-aʿānahu ʿalā dhālika ʿaduwwuka waʿaduwwuhu, fa-aqdama ʿalayhi ʿārifan biwaʿīdika, rājiyan liʿafwika, wāthiqan bitajāwuzika,

but because his desire called him towards what You had set apart as forbidden and warned him against. Your enemy, who is also his enemy, helped him in this. He ventured into it, knowing Your warning yet hoping for Your pardon and trusting that You would overlook it.

وَكَانَ أَحَقَّ عِبَادِكَ مَعَ مَا مَنَنْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَلَّا يَفْعَلَ، وَهَا أَنَا ذَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ صَاغِرًا، ذَلِيلًا، خَاضِعًا، خَاشِعًا، خَائِفًا، مُعْتَرِفًا بِعَظِيمٍ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ تَحَمَّلْتُهُ،

Wakāna aḥaqqa ʿibādika maʿa mā mananta ʿalayhi allā yafʿala, wahā anā dhā bayna yadayka ṣāghiran, dhalīlan, khāḍiʿan, khāshiʿan, khāʾifan, muʿtarifan biʿaẓīmin mina al-dhunūbi taḥammaltuhu,

Yet, after all You had bestowed upon him, he had more reason than any of Your servants not to do so. Here I am before You, lowly, abased, submissive, humbled, and afraid, acknowledging the great burden of sins I have taken upon myself

وَجَلِيلٍ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا اِجْتَرَمْتُهُ، مُسْتَجِيرًا بِصَفْحِكَ، لَائِذًا بِرَحْمَتِكَ، مُوقِنًا أَنَّهُ لَا يُجِيرُنِي مِنْكَ مُجِيرٌ، وَلَا يَمْنَعُنِي مِنْكَ مَانِعٌ.

Wajalīlin mina al-khaṭāyā ijtaramtuhu, mustajīran biṣafḥika, lāʾidhan biraḥmatika, mūqinan annahu lā yujīrunī minka mujīrun, walā yamnaʿunī minka māniʿun.

and the grave offences I have committed. I seek shelter in Your pardon and refuge in Your mercy, certain that no protector can shelter me from You and no defender can keep You from me.

فَعُدْ عَلَيَّ بِمَا تَعُودُ بِهِ عَلَى مَنِ اِقْتَرَفَ مِنْ تَغَمُّدِكَ، وَجُدْ عَلَيَّ بِمَا تَجُودُ بِهِ عَلَى مَنْ أَلْقَى بِيَدِهِ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ عَفْوِكَ،

Faʿud ʿalayya bimā taʿūdu bihi ʿalā mani iqtarafa min taghammudika, wajud ʿalayya bimā tajūdu bihi ʿalā man alqā biyadihi ilayka min ʿafwika,

Return to me with the covering mercy You grant those who have sinned, and be generous to me with the pardon You give those who surrender themselves into Your hands.

وَاُمْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِمَا لَا يَتَعَاظَمُكَ أَنْ تَمُنَّ بِهِ عَلَى مَنْ أَمَّلَكَ مِنْ غُفْرَانِكَ، وَاِجْعَلْ لِي فِي هَٰذَا الْيَوْمِ نَصِيبًا أَنَالُ بِهِ حَظّاً مِنْ رِضْوَانِكَ،

Wa-umnun ʿalayya bimā lā yataʿāẓamuka an tamunna bihi ʿalā man ammalaka min ghufrānika, wa-ijʿal lī fī hādhā al-yawmi naṣīban anālu bihi ḥaẓẓan min riḍwānika,

Bestow on me the forgiveness that is never too great for You to grant someone who hopes in You. Give me a portion of this day through which I may receive a share of Your good pleasure.

وَلَا تَرُدَّنِي صِفْرًا مِمَّا يَنْقَلِبُ بِهِ الْمُتَعَبِّدُونَ لَكَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ، وَإِنِّي وَإِنْ لَمْ أُقَدِّمْ مَا قَدَّمُوهُ مِنَ الصَّالِحَاتِ، فَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ تَوْحِيدَكَ، وَنَفْيَ الْأَضْدَادِ وَالْأَنْدَادِ وَالْأَشْبَاهِ عَنْكَ،

Walā taruddanī ṣifran mimmā yanqalibu bihi al-mutaʿabbidūna laka min ʿibādika, wa-innī wa-in lam uqaddim mā qaddamūhu mina al-ṣāliḥāti, faqad qaddamtu tawḥīdaka, wanafya al-aḍdādi wa-al-andādi wa-al-ashbāhi ʿanka,

Do not send me back empty of what Your worshipping servants take away. Though I have not brought the good deeds they have brought, I have brought my affirmation of Your oneness and my denial that You have opposites, rivals, or likenesses.

وَأَتَيْتُكَ مِنَ الْأَبْوَابِ الَّتِي أَمَرْتَ أَنْ تُؤْتَى مِنْهَا، وَتَقَرَّبْتُ إِلَيْكَ بِمَا لَا يَقْرُبُ، أَحَدٌ مِنْكَ إِلَّا بِالتَّقَرُّبِ بِهِ ثُمَّ أَتْبَعْتُ ذَٰلِكَ بِالْإِنَابَةِ إِلَيْكَ، وَالتَّذَلُّلِ وَالِاسْتِكَانَةِ لَكَ،

Wa-ataytuka mina al-abwābi al-latī amarta an tuʾtā minhā, wataqarrabtu ilayka bimā lā yaqrubu, aḥadun minka illā bi-al-taqarrubi bihi thumma atbaʿtu dhālika bi-al-inābati ilayka, wa-al-tadhalluli wa-al-istikānati laka,

I have come to You through the doors by which You commanded that You be approached, and sought nearness to You through that without which no one can draw near. I followed this with returning to You, humbling myself, and submitting before You,

وَحُسْنِ الظَّنِّ بِكَ، وَالثِّقَةِ بِمَا عِنْدَكَ، وَشَفَعْتُهُ بِرَجَائِكَ الَّذِي قَلَّ مَا يَخِيبُ عَلَيْهِ رَاجِيكَ، وَسَأَلْتُكَ مَسْأَلَةَ الْحَقِيرِ الذَّلِيلِ الْبَائِسِ الْفَقِيرِ الْخَائِفِ الْمُسْتَجِيرِ،

Waḥusni al-ẓanni bika, wa-al-thiqati bimā ʿindaka, washafaʿtuhu birajāʾika al-ladhī qalla mā yakhību ʿalayhi rājīka, wasaʾaltuka masʾalata al-ḥaqīri al-dhalīli al-bāʾisi al-faqīri al-khāʾifi al-mustajīri,

thinking well of You and trusting what is with You. I joined it to hope in You, through which those who hope in You are seldom disappointed. I have asked as one who is insignificant, abased, wretched, poor, afraid, and seeking shelter,

وَمَعَ ذَٰلِكَ خِيفَةً وَتَضَرُّعًا وَتَعَوُّذًا وَتَلَوُّذًا، لَا مُسْتَطِيلًا بِتَكَبُّرِ الْمُتَكَبِّرِينَ، وَلَا مُتَعَالِيًا بِدَالَّةِ الْمُطِيعِينَ، وَلَا مُسْتَطِيلًا بِشَفَاعَةِ الشَّافِعِينَ، وَأَنَا بَعْدُ أَقَلُّ الْأَقَلِّينَ، وَأَذَلُّ الْأَذَلِّينَ،

Wamaʿa dhālika khīfatan wataḍarruʿan wataʿawwudhan watalawwudhan, lā mustaṭīlan bitakabburi al-mutakabbirīna, walā mutaʿāliyan bidāllati al-muṭīʿīna, walā mustaṭīlan bishafāʿati al-shāfiʿīna, wa-anā baʿdu aqallu al-aqallīna, wa-adhallu al-adhallīna,

with fear, pleading, a search for protection, and a longing for refuge—not asserting myself with the arrogance of the proud, not exalting myself with the confidence of the obedient, and not presuming upon the intercession of intercessors. Even now I am the least of the least, the lowest of the low,

وَمِثْلُ الذَّرَّةِ أَوْ دُونَهَا.

Wamithlu al-dharrati aw dūnahā.

like a tiny speck, or less than that.

فَيَا مَنْ لَمْ يُعَاجِلِ الْمُسِيئِينَ، وَلَا يَنْدَهُ الْمُتْرَفِينَ، وَيَا مَنْ يَمُنُّ بِإِقَالَةِ الْعَاثِرِينَ، وَيَتَفَضَّلُ بِإِنْظَارِ الْخَاطِئِينَ، أَنَا الْمُسِيءُ الْمُعْتَرِفُ الْخَاطِئُ الْعَاثِرُ، أَنَا الَّذِي أَقْدَمَ عَلَيْكَ مُجْتَرِئًا،

Fayā man lam yuʿājili al-musīʾīna, walā yandahu al-mutrafīna, wayā man yamunnu biʾiqālati al-ʿāthirīna, wayatafaḍḍalu biʾinẓāri al-khāṭiʾīna, anā al-musīʾu al-muʿtarifu al-khāṭiʾu al-ʿāthiru, anā al-ladhī aqdama ʿalayka mujtariʾan,

O You who do not hasten to punish those who do wrong or drive away those spoiled by luxury; O You who graciously lift those who stumble and grant sinners time: I am the wrongdoer who confesses, the sinner who stumbles. I am the one who approached You with audacity.

أَنَا الَّذِي عَصَاكَ مُتَعَمِّدًا، أَنَا الَّذِي اِسْتَخْفَى مِنْ عِبَادِكَ وَبَارَزَكَ، أَنَا الَّذِي هَابَ عِبَادَكَ وَأَمِنَكَ أَنَا الَّذِي لَمْ يَرْهَبْ سَطْوَتَكَ وَلَمْ يَخَفْ بَأْسَكَ أَنَا الْجَانِي عَلَى نَفْسِهِ،

Anā al-ladhī ʿaṣāka mutaʿammidan, anā al-ladhī istakhfā min ʿibādika wabārazaka, anā al-ladhī hāba ʿibādaka wa-aminaka anā al-ladhī lam yarhab saṭwataka walam yakhaf baʾsaka anā al-jānī ʿalā nafsihi,

I am the one who deliberately disobeyed You, hid from Your servants while openly confronting You, feared Your servants while feeling safe from You, neither dreaded Your force nor feared Your might. I am the one who has wronged himself.

أَنَا الْمُرْتَهَنُ بِبَلِيَّتِهِ، الْقَلِيلُ الْحَيَاءِ، أَنَا الطَّوِيلُ الْعَنَاءِ، بِحَقِّ مَنِ اِنْتَجَبْتَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، وَبِمَنِ اِصْطَفَيْتَهُ لِنَفْسِكَ، بِحَقِّ مَنِ اِخْتَرْتَ مِنْ بَرِيَّتِكَ، وَمَنِ اِجْتَبَيْتَ لِشَأْنِكَ،

Anā al-murtahanu bibaliyyatihi, al-qalīlu al-ḥayāʾi, anā al-ṭawīlu al-ʿanāʾi, biḥaqqi mani intajabta min khalqika, wabimani iṣṭafaytahu linafsika, biḥaqqi mani ikhtarta min bariyyatika, wamani ijtabayta lishaʾnika,

I am held hostage by my affliction, scant in shame and long in suffering. By the right of those You selected from Your creation and chose for Yourself, by the right of those You chose from Your creatures and elected for Your purpose,

بِحَقِّ مَنْ وَصَلْتَ طَاعَتَهُ بِطَاعَتِكَ، وَمَنْ جَعَلْتَ مَعْصِيَتَهُ كَمَعْصِيَتِكَ بِحَقِّ مَنْ قَرَنْتَ مُوَالَاتَهُ بِمُوَالَاتِكَ، وَمَنْ نُطْتَ مُعَادَاتَهُ بِمُعَادَاتِكَ.

Biḥaqqi man waṣalta ṭāʿatahu biṭāʿatika, waman jaʿalta maʿṣiyatahu kamaʿṣiyatika biḥaqqi man qaranta muwālātahu bimuwālātika, waman nuṭta muʿādātahu bimuʿādātika.

by the right of those whose obedience You joined to obedience to You, and whose disobedience You made like disobedience to You; by the right of those whose friendship You linked to friendship with You, and whose enmity You tied to enmity towards You:

تَغَمَّدْنِي فِي يَوْمِي هَٰذَا بِمَا تَتَغَمَّدُ بِهِ مَنْ جَارَ إِلَيْكَ مُتَنَصِّلًا، وَعَاذَ بِاسْتِغْفَارِكَ تَائِبًا، وَتَوَلَّنِي بِمَا تَتَوَلَّى بِهِ أَهْلَ طَاعَتِكَ، وَالزُّلْفَى لَدَيْكَ، وَالْمَكَانَةِ مِنْكَ،

Taghammadnī fī yawmī hādhā bimā tataghammadu bihi man jāra ilayka mutanaṣṣilan, waʿādha bistighfārika tāʾiban, watawallanī bimā tatawallā bihi ahla ṭāʿatika, wa-al-zulfā ladayka, wa-al-makānati minka,

cover me this day with the mercy You grant someone who seeks Your protection, renounces his wrongs, and takes refuge in seeking Your forgiveness, repentant. Care for me as You care for those who obey You, stand near You, and hold a place with You.

وَتَوَحَّدْنِي بِمَا تَتَوَحَّدُ بِهِ مَنْ وَفَى بِعَهْدِكَ، وَأَتْعَبَ نَفْسَهُ فِي ذَاتِكَ، وَأَجْهَدَهَا فِي مَرْضَاتِكَ، وَلَا تُؤَاخِذْنِي بِتَفْرِيطِي فِي جَنْبِكَ، وَتَعَدِّي طَوْرِي فِي حُدُودِكَ، وَمُجَاوَزَةِ أَحْكَامِكَ.

Watawaḥḥadnī bimā tatawaḥḥadu bihi man wafā biʿahdika, wa-atʿaba nafsahu fī dhātika, wa-ajhadahā fī marḍātika, walā tuʾākhidhnī bitafrīṭī fī janbika, wataʿaddī ṭawrī fī ḥudūdika, wamujāwazati aḥkāmika.

Give me the special care You give someone who fulfils Your covenant, wearies himself for Your sake, and strives to please You. Do not call me to account for neglecting what is due to You, exceeding my place within Your limits, or overstepping Your rulings.

وَلَا تَسْتَدْرِجْنِي بِإِمْلَائِكَ لِي اِسْتِدْرَاجَ مَنْ مَنَعَنِي خَيْرَ مَا عِنْدَهُ، وَلَمْ يَشْرَكْكَ فِي حُلُولِ نِعْمَتِهِ بِي، وَنَبِّهْنِي مِنْ رَقْدَةِ الْغَافِلِينَ، وَسِنَةِ الْمُسْرِفِينَ، وَنَعْسَةِ الْمَخْذُولِينَ.

Walā tastadrijnī biʾimlāʾika lī istidrāja man manaʿanī khayra mā ʿindahu, walam yashrakka fī ḥulūli niʿmatihi bī, wanabbihnī min raqdati al-ghāfilīna, wasinati al-musrifīna, wanaʿsati al-makhdhūlīna.

Do not let the respite You grant me lead me gradually into ruin, as would someone who withheld his good from me and had no share alongside You in any favour reaching me. Wake me from the sleep of the heedless, the drowsiness of the wasteful, and the stupor of those left without help.

وَخُذْ بِقَلْبِي إِلَى مَا اِسْتَعْمَلْتَ بِهِ الْقَانِتِينَ، وَاِسْتَعْبَدْتَ بِهِ الْمُتَعَبِّدِينَ، وَاِسْتَنْقَذْتَ بِهِ الْمُتَهَاوِنِينَ، وَأَعِذْنِي مِمَّا يُبَاعِدُنِي عَنْكَ، وَيَحُولُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ حَظِّي مِنْكَ، وَيَصُدُّنِي عَمَّا أُحَاوِلُ لَدَيْكَ.

Wakhudh biqalbī ilā mā istaʿmalta bihi al-qānitīna, wa-istaʿbadta bihi al-mutaʿabbidīna, wa-istanqadhta bihi al-mutahāwinīna, wa-aʿidhnī mimmā yubāʿidunī ʿanka, wayaḥūlu baynī wabayna ḥaẓẓī minka, wayaṣuddunī ʿammā uḥāwilu ladayka.

Lead my heart towards the service in which You employ the devout, the worship to which You bind the worshippers, and the means by which You rescue the careless. Protect me from whatever takes me far from You, bars me from my share with You, or turns me away from what I seek in Your presence.

وَسَهِّلْ لِي مَسْلَكَ الْخَيْرَاتِ إِلَيْكَ، وَالْمُسَابَقَةَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرْتَ، وَالْمُشَاحَّةَ فِيهَا عَلَى مَا أَرَدْتَ.

Wasahhil lī maslaka al-khayrāti ilayka, wa-al-musābaqata ilayhā min ḥaythu amarta, wa-al-mushāḥḥata fīhā ʿalā mā aradta.

Make it easy for me to travel towards You by good deeds, to race towards them in the way You commanded, and to strive eagerly for them as You wish.

وَلَا تَمْحَقْنِي فِيمَنْ تَمْحَقُ مِنَ الْمُسْتَخِفِّينَ بِمَا أَوْعَدْتَ، وَلَا تُهْلِكْنِي مَعَ مَنْ تُهْلِكُ مِنَ الْمُتَعَرِّضِينَ لِمَقْتِكَ، وَلَا تُتَبِّرْنِي فِيمَنْ تُتَبِّرُ مِنَ الْمُنْحَرِفِينَ عَنْ سُبُلِكَ.

Walā tamḥaqnī fīman tamḥaqu mina al-mustakhiffīna bimā awʿadta, walā tuhliknī maʿa man tuhliku mina al-mutaʿarriḍīna limaqtika, walā tutabbirnī fīman tutabbiru mina al-munḥarifīna ʿan subulika.

Do not wipe me out among those who take Your threats lightly, destroy me with those who expose themselves to Your anger, or ruin me among those who turn aside from Your ways.

وَنَجِّنِي مِنْ غَمَرَاتِ الْفِتْنَةِ، وَخَلِّصْنِي مِنْ لَهَوَاتِ الْبَلْوَى، وَأَجِرْنِي مِنْ أَخْذِ الْإِمْلَاءِ، وَحُلْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ عَدُوٍّ يُضِلُّنِي، وَهَوًى يُوبِقُنِي، وَمَنْقَصَةٍ تَرْهَقُنِي.

Wanajjinī min ghamarāti al-fitnati, wakhalliṣnī min lahawāti al-balwā, wa-ajirnī min akhdhi al-imlāʾi, waḥul baynī wabayna ʿaduwwin yuḍillunī, wahawan yūbiqunī, wamanqaṣatin tarhaqunī.

Save me from the engulfing waves of temptation, free me from the jaws of affliction, and protect me from being seized after a period of respite. Stand between me and an enemy who misleads me, a desire that ruins me, or a failing that overwhelms me.

وَلَا تُعْرِضْ عَنِّي إِعْرَاضَ مَنْ لَا تَرْضَى عَنْهُ بَعْدَ غَضَبِكَ، وَلَا تُؤْيِسْنِي مِنَ الْأَمَلِ فِيكَ، فَيَغْلِبَ عَلَيَّ الْقُنُوطُ مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ، وَلَا تَمْنَحْنِي بِمَا لَا طَاقَةَ لِي بِهِ،

Walā tuʿriḍ ʿannī iʿrāḍa man lā tarḍā ʿanhu baʿda ghaḍabika, walā tuʾyisnī mina al-amali fīka, fayaghliba ʿalayya al-qunūṭu min raḥmatika, walā tamnaḥnī bimā lā ṭāqata lī bihi,

Do not turn away from me as from someone with whom You will never again be pleased after Your anger. Do not deprive me of hope in You, so that despair of Your mercy overcomes me. Do not bestow on me what I lack the strength to bear,

فَتَبْهَظَنِي مِمَّا تُحَمِّلُنِيهِ مِنْ فَضْلِ مَحَبَّتِكَ، وَلَا تُرْسِلْنِي مِنْ يَدِكَ إِرْسَالَ مَنْ لَا خَيْرَ فِيهِ، وَلَا حَاجَةَ بِكَ إِلَيْهِ، وَلَا إِنَابَةَ لَهُ،

Fatabhaẓanī mimmā tuḥammilunīhi min faḍli maḥabbatika, walā tursilnī min yadika irsāla man lā khayra fīhi, walā ḥājata bika ilayhi, walā inābata lahu,

and thus weigh me down with the abundance of Your love that You lay upon me. Do not release me from Your hand as one in whom there is no good, for whom You have no use, and who never turns back to You.

وَلَا تَرْمِ بِي رَمْيَ مَنْ سَقَطَ مِنْ عَيْنِ رِعَايَتِكَ، وَمَنِ اِشْتَمَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْخِزْيُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ، بَلْ خُذْ بِيَدِي مِنْ سَقْطَةِ الْمُتَرَدِّدِينَ، وَوَهْلَةِ الْمُتَعَسِّفِينَ، وَزَلَّةِ الْمَغْرُورِينَ، وَوَرْطَةِ الْهَالِكِينَ.

Walā tarmi bī ramya man saqaṭa min ʿayni riʿāyatika, wamani ishtamala ʿalayhi al-khizyu min ʿindika, bal khudh biyadī min saqṭati al-mutaraddidīna, wawahlati al-mutaʿassifīna, wazallati al-maghrūrīna, wawarṭati al-hālikīna.

Do not cast me away as one who has fallen from Your watchful care and been enveloped in disgrace from You. Instead, take my hand and save me from the fall of the wavering, the bewilderment of those who go astray, the slip of the deluded, and the predicament of the ruined.

وَعَافِنِي مِمَّا اِبْتَلَيْتَ بِهِ طَبَقَاتِ عَبِيدِكَ وَإِمَائِكَ، وَبَلِّغْنِي مَبَالِغَ مَنْ عُنِيتَ بِهِ، وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ، وَرَضِيتَ عَنْهُ، فَأَعَشْتَهُ حَمِيدًا، وَتَوَفَّيْتَهُ سَعِيدًا، وَطَوِّقْنِي طَوْقَ الْإِقْلَاعِ عَمَّا يُحْبِطُ الْحَسَنَاتِ،

Waʿāfinī mimmā ibtalayta bihi ṭabaqāti ʿabīdika wa-imāʾika, waballighnī mabāligha man ʿunīta bihi, wa-anʿamta ʿalayhi, waraḍīta ʿanhu, fa-aʿashtahu ḥamīdan, watawaffaytahu saʿīdan, waṭawwiqnī ṭawqa al-iqlāʿi ʿammā yuḥbiṭu al-ḥasanāti,

Keep me safe from the trials with which You have afflicted different groups of Your male and female servants. Bring me to the attainments of someone You have cared for, favoured, and been pleased with, whom You allowed to live a praiseworthy life and die in happiness. Bind me firmly to abandoning whatever cancels good deeds

وَيَذْهَبُ بِالْبَرَكَاتِ، وَأَشْعِرْ قَلْبِيَ الِازْدِجَارَ عَنْ قَبَائِحِ السَّيِّئَاتِ، وَفَوَاضِحِ الْحَوْبَاتِ، وَلَا تَشْغَلْنِي بِمَا لَا أُدْرِكُهُ إِلَّا بِكَ عَمَّا لَا يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي غَيْرُهُ،

Wayadhhabu bi-al-barakāti, wa-ashʿir qalbiya al-izdijāra ʿan qabāʾiḥi al-sayyiʾāti, wafawāḍiḥi al-ḥawbāti, walā tashghalnī bimā lā udrikuhu illā bika ʿammā lā yurḍīka ʿannī ghayruhu,

and takes away blessings. Make my heart recoil from ugly sins and shameful offences. Do not let what I can obtain only through You distract me from that without which nothing can make You pleased with me.

وَاِنْزِعْ مِنْ قَلْبِي حُبَّ دُنْيَا دَنِيَّةٍ تَنْهَى عَمَّا عِنْدَكَ، وَتَصُدُّ عَنِ اِبْتِغَاءِ الْوَسِيلَةِ إِلَيْكَ، وَتُذْهِلُ عَنِ التَّقَرُّبِ مِنْكَ، وَزَيِّنْ لِيَ التَّفَرُّدَ بِمُنَاجَاتِكَ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ،

Wa-inziʿ min qalbī ḥubba dunyā daniyyatin tanhā ʿammā ʿindaka, wataṣuddu ʿani ibtighāʾi al-wasīlati ilayka, watudhhilu ʿani al-taqarrubi minka, wazayyin liya al-tafarruda bimunājātika bi-al-layli wa-al-nahāri,

Remove from my heart love of a lowly world that keeps me from what is with You, blocks my search for a means of approach to You, and distracts me from drawing near. Make solitary communion with You beautiful to me, by night and by day.

وَهَبْ لِي عِصْمَةً تُدْنِينِي مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ، وَتَقْطَعُنِي عَنْ رُكُوبِ مَحَارِمِكَ، وَتَفُكَّنِي مِنْ أَسْرِ الْعَظَائِمِ، وَهَبْ لِيَ التَّطْهِيرَ مِنْ دَنَسِ الْعِصْيَانِ، وَأَذْهِبْ عَنِّي دَرَنَ الْخَطَايَا، وَسَرْبِلْنِي بِسِرْبَالِ عَافِيَتِكَ،

Wahab lī ʿiṣmatan tudnīnī min khashyatika, wataqṭaʿunī ʿan rukūbi maḥārimika, watafukkanī min asri al-ʿaẓāʾimi, wahab liya al-taṭhīra min danasi al-ʿiṣyāni, wa-adhhib ʿannī darana al-khaṭāyā, wasarbilnī bisirbāli ʿāfiyatika,

Grant me protection that brings me nearer to reverent fear of You, cuts me off from committing what You forbid, and frees me from captivity to grave sins. Grant me purification from the stain of disobedience, remove the grime of my offences, and clothe me in the garment of Your wellbeing.

وَرَدِّنِي رِدَاءَ مُعَافَاتِكَ، وَجَلِّلْنِي سَوَابِغَ نَعْمَائِكَ، وَظَاهِرْ لَدَيَّ فَضْلَكَ وَطَوْلَكَ، وَأَيِّدْنِي بِتَوْفِيقِكَ وَتَسْدِيدِكَ، وَأَعِنِّي عَلَى صَالِحِ النِّيَّةِ وَمَرْضِيِّ الْقَوْلِ وَمُسْتَحْسَنِ الْعَمَلِ.

Waraddinī ridāʾa muʿāfātika, wajallilnī sawābigha naʿmāʾika, waẓāhir ladayya faḍlaka waṭawlaka, wa-ayyidnī bitawfīqika watasdīdika, wa-aʿinnī ʿalā ṣāliḥi al-niyyati wamarḍiyyi al-qawli wamustaḥsani al-ʿamali.

Wrap me in the cloak of Your protection, cover me with Your abundant favours, and give me Your grace and bounty one after another. Strengthen me with Your enabling help and right direction; help me towards sound intentions, words that please You, and deeds that are good.

وَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى حَوْلِي وَقُوَّتِي دُونَ حَوْلِكَ وَقُوَّتِكَ، وَلَا تُخْزِنِي يَوْمَ تَبْعَثُنِي لِلِقَائِكَ، وَلَا تَفْضَحْنِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْ أَوْلِيَائِكَ، وَلَا تُنْسِنِي ذِكْرَكَ، وَلَا تُذْهِبْ عَنِّي شُكْرَكَ،

Walā takilnī ilā ḥawlī waquwwatī dūna ḥawlika waquwwatika, walā tukhzinī yawma tabʿathunī liliqāʾika, walā tafḍaḥnī bayna yaday awliyāʾika, walā tunsinī dhikraka, walā tudhhib ʿannī shukraka,

Do not leave me to my own ability and strength without Yours. Do not disgrace me on the day You raise me to meet You, expose me before Your friends, make me forget to remember You, or take gratitude to You away from me.

بَلْ أَلْزِمْنِيهِ فِي أَحْوَالِ السَّهْوِ عِنْدَ غَفَلَاتِ الْجَاهِلِينَ لِآلَائِكَ، وَأَوْزِعْنِي أَنْ أُثْنِيَ بِمَا أَوْلَيْتَنِيهِ، وَأَعْتَرِفَ بِمَا أَسْدَيْتَهُ إِلَيَّ، وَاِجْعَلْ رَغْبَتِي إِلَيْكَ فَوْقَ رَغْبَةِ الرَّاغِبِينَ،

Bal alzimnīhi fī aḥwāli al-sahwi ʿinda ghafalāti al-jāhilīna liʾālāʾika, wa-awziʿnī an uthniya bimā awlaytanīhi, wa-aʿtarifa bimā asdaytahu ilayya, wa-ijʿal raghbatī ilayka fawqa raghbati al-rāghibīna,

Instead, bind me to gratitude even in moments of forgetfulness, when those who do not recognise Your gifts are heedless. Inspire me to praise what You have given me and acknowledge what You have bestowed upon me. Make my longing for You greater than the longing of those who long,

وَحَمْدِي إِيَّاكَ فَوْقَ حَمْدِ الْحَامِدِينَ، وَلَا تَخْذُلْنِي عِنْدَ فَاقَتِي إِلَيْكَ، وَلَا تُهْلِكْنِي بِمَا أَسْدَيْتُهُ إِلَيْكَ، وَلَا تَجْبَهْنِي بِمَا جَبَهْتَ بِهِ الْمُعَانِدِينَ لَكَ، فَإِنِّي لَكَ مُسَلِّمٌ،

Waḥamdī iyyāka fawqa ḥamdi al-ḥāmidīna, walā takhdhulnī ʿinda fāqatī ilayka, walā tuhliknī bimā asdaytuhu ilayka, walā tajbahnī bimā jabahta bihi al-muʿānidīna laka, fa-innī laka musallimun,

and my praise of You greater than the praise of those who praise. Do not abandon me when I need You, destroy me for what I have sent before You, or confront me as You confront those who oppose You. I submit to You,

أَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الْحُجَّةَ لَكَ، وَأَنَّكَ أَوْلَى بِالْفَضْلِ، وَأَعْوَدُ بِالْإِحْسَانِ، وَأَهْلُ التَّقْوَى، وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ، وَأَنَّكَ بِأَنْ تَعْفُوَ أَوْلَى مِنْكَ بِأَنْ تُعَاقِبَ،

Aʿlamu anna al-ḥujjata laka, wa-annaka awlā bi-al-faḍli, wa-aʿwadu bi-al-iḥsāni, wa-ahlu al-taqwā, wa-ahlu al-maghfirati, wa-annaka biʾan taʿfuwa awlā minka biʾan tuʿāqiba,

knowing that the decisive argument belongs to You, that You are most worthy to show grace and ever ready to do good, worthy of reverence and of granting forgiveness; that pardoning is more fitting for You than punishing,

وَأَنَّكَ بِأَنْ تَسْتُرَ أَقْرَبُ مِنْكَ إِلَى أَنْ تَشْهَرَ،

Wa-annaka biʾan tastura aqrabu minka ilā an tashhara,

and concealing faults is nearer to You than exposing them.

فَأَحْيِنِي حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً تَنْتَظِمُ بِمَا أُرِيدُ وَتَبْلُغُ مَا أُحِبُّ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا آتِي مَا تَكْرَهُ وَلَا أَرْتَكِبُ مَا نَهَيْتَ عَنْهُ، وَأَمِتْنِي مِيتَةَ مَنْ يَسْعَى نُورُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ،

Fa-aḥyinī ḥayātan ṭayyibatan tantaẓimu bimā urīdu watablughu mā uḥibbu min ḥaythu lā ātī mā takrahu walā artakibu mā nahayta ʿanhu, wa-amitnī mītata man yasʿā nūruhu bayna yadayhi,

Let me live a good life that brings together what I seek and attains what I love, without my doing what You dislike or committing what You have forbidden. Let me die the death of someone whose light runs before him

وَعَنْ يَمِينِهِ، وَذَلِّلْنِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ، وَأَعِزَّنِي عِنْدَ خَلْقِكَ، وَضَعْنِي إِذَا خَلَوْتُ بِكَ، وَاِرْفَعْنِي بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ، وَأَغْنِنِي عَمَّنْ هُوَ غَنِيٌّ عَنِّي، وَزِدْنِي إِلَيْكَ فَاقَةً وَفَقْرًا،

Waʿan yamīnihi, wadhallilnī bayna yadayka, wa-aʿizzanī ʿinda khalqika, waḍaʿnī idhā khalawtu bika, wa-irfaʿnī bayna ʿibādika, wa-aghninī ʿamman huwa ghaniyyun ʿannī, wazidnī ilayka fāqatan wafaqran,

and on his right. Make me humble before You and honoured among Your creatures; lower me when I am alone with You and raise me among Your servants. Free me from needing those who have no need of me, and increase my poverty and need towards You.

وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْ شَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ، وَمِنْ حُلُولِ الْبَلَاءِ، وَمِنَ الذُّلِّ وَالْعَنَاءِ، تَغَمَّدْنِي فِيمَا اِطَّلَعْتَ عَلَيْهِ مِنِّي بِمَا يَتَغَمَّدُ بِهِ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى الْبَطْشِ لَوْلَا حِلْمُهُ،

Wa-aʿidhnī min shamātati al-aʿdāʾi, wamin ḥulūli al-balāʾi, wamina al-dhulli wa-al-ʿanāʾi, taghammadnī fīmā iṭṭalaʿta ʿalayhi minnī bimā yataghammadu bihi al-qādiru ʿalā al-baṭshi lawlā ḥilmuhu,

Protect me from the gloating of enemies, the arrival of affliction, humiliation, and suffering. Cover what You have seen of me with the mercy of One who could strike, were it not for His forbearance,

وَالْآخِذُ عَلَى الْجَرِيرَةِ لَوْلَا أَنَاتُهُ، وَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ بِقَوْمٍ فِتْنَةً أَوْ سُوءًا فَنَجِّنِي مِنْهَا لِوَاذًا بِكَ، وَإِذْ لَمْ تُقِمْنِي مَقَامَ فَضِيحَةٍ فِي دُنْيَاكَ فَلَا تُقِمْنِي مِثْلَهُ فِي آخِرَتِكَ،

Wa-al-ākhidhu ʿalā al-jarīrati lawlā anātuhu, wa-idhā aradta biqawmin fitnatan aw sūʾan fanajjinī minhā liwādhan bika, wa-idh lam tuqimnī maqāma faḍīḥatin fī dunyāka falā tuqimnī mithlahu fī ākhiratika,

and could seize for wrongdoing, were it not for His patience. When You intend a trial or harm for a people, rescue me from it as I seek refuge in You. As You have not placed me in a position of disgrace in Your world, do not place me in one in Your hereafter.

وَاِشْفَعْ لِي أَوَائِلَ مِنَنِكَ بِأَوَاخِرِهَا، وَقَدِيمَ فَوَائِدِكَ بِحَوَادِثِهَا.

Wa-ishfaʿ lī awāʾila minanika biʾawākhirihā, waqadīma fawāʾidika biḥawādithihā.

Join Your earlier kindnesses to later ones for me, and Your longstanding benefits to new ones.

وَلَا تَمْدُدْ لِي مَدّاً يَقْسُو مَعَهُ قَلْبِي، وَلَا تَقْرَعْنِي قَارِعَةً يَذْهَبُ لَهَا بَهَائِي، وَلَا تَسُمْنِي خَسِيسَةً يَصْغُرُ لَهَا قَدْرِي، وَلَا نَقِيصَةً يُجْهَلُ مِنْ أَجْلِهَا مَكَانِي،

Walā tamdud lī maddan yaqsū maʿahu qalbī, walā taqraʿnī qāriʿatan yadhhabu lahā bahāʾī, walā tasumnī khasīsatan yaṣghuru lahā qadrī, walā naqīṣatan yujhalu min ajlihā makānī,

Do not prolong my respite until my heart grows hard, strike me with a calamity that strips away my dignity, impose on me a humiliation that diminishes my worth, or a deficiency through which my standing goes unrecognised.

وَلَا تَرُعْنِي رَوْعَةً أُبْلِسُ بِهَا، وَلَا خِيفَةً أُوجِسُ دُونَهَا.

Walā taruʿnī rawʿatan ublisu bihā, walā khīfatan ūjisu dūnahā.

Do not frighten me with a terror that makes me despair, or a fear before which I tremble inwardly.

اِجْعَلْ هَيْبَتِي فِي وَعِيدِكَ، وَحَذَرِي مِنْ إِعْذَارِكَ وَإِنْذَارِكَ، وَرَهْبَتِي عِنْدَ تِلَاوَةِ آيَاتِكَ، وَاُعْمُرْ لَيْلِي بِإِيقَاظِي فِيهِ لِعِبَادَتِكَ، وَتَفَرُّدِي بِالتَّهَجُّدِ لَكَ، وَتَجَرُّدِي بِسُكُونِي إِلَيْكَ، وَإِنْزَالِ حَوَائِجِي بِكَ،

Ijʿal haybatī fī waʿīdika, waḥadharī min iʿdhārika wa-indhārika, warahbatī ʿinda tilāwati āyātika, wa-uʿmur laylī biʾīqāẓī fīhi liʿibādatika, watafarrudī bi-al-tahajjudi laka, watajarrudī bisukūnī ilayka, wa-inzāli ḥawāʾijī bika,

Let my awe be directed towards Your warning, my caution towards Your admonitions that leave no excuse, and my fear towards the recitation of Your signs. Fill my night by waking me to worship You, keeping solitary vigil for You, giving myself wholly to resting in You, and laying my needs before You,

وَمُنَازَلَتِي إِيَّاكَ فِي فَكَاكِ رَقَبَتِي مِنْ نَارِكَ، وَإِجَارَتِي مِمَّا فِيهِ أَهْلُهَا مِنْ عَذَابِكَ.

Wamunāzalatī iyyāka fī fakāki raqabatī min nārika, wa-ijāratī mimmā fīhi ahluhā min ʿadhābika.

and by my pleading with You to free my neck from Your Fire and shelter me from the punishment suffered by its inhabitants.

وَلَا تَذَرْنِي فِي طُغْيَانِي عَامِهًا، وَلَا فِي غَمْرَتِي سَاهِيًا حَتَّى حِينٍ، وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي عِظَةً لِمَنِ اِتَّعَظَ، وَلَا نَكَالًا لِمَنِ اِعْتَبَرَ، وَلَا فِتْنَةً لِمَنْ نَظَرَ،

Walā tadharnī fī ṭughyānī ʿāmihan, walā fī ghamratī sāhiyan ḥattā ḥīnin, walā tajʿalnī ʿiẓatan limani ittaʿaẓa, walā nakālan limani iʿtabara, walā fitnatan liman naẓara,

Do not leave me wandering blindly in my rebellion or distracted in my confusion until the appointed time. Do not make me a warning to those who take warning, an example of punishment to those who reflect, or a trial for those who look on.

وَلَا تَمْكُرْ بِي فِيمَنْ تَمْكُرُ بِهِ، وَلَا تَسْتَبْدِلْ بِي غَيْرِي، وَلَا تُغَيِّرْ لِي اِسْمًا، وَلَا تُبَدِّلْ لِي جِسْمًا، وَلَا تَتَّخِذْنِي هُزُوًا لِخَلْقِكَ، وَلَا سُخْرِيّاً لَكَ،

Walā tamkur bī fīman tamkuru bihi, walā tastabdil bī ghayrī, walā tughayyir lī isman, walā tubaddil lī jisman, walā tattakhidhnī huzuwan likhalqika, walā sukhriyyan laka,

Do not take me unawares among those You take unawares, replace me with someone else, change my name, transform my body, make me a laughingstock for Your creatures, or an object of mockery before You.

وَلَا تَبَعًا إِلَّا لِمَرْضَاتِكَ، وَلَا مُمْتَهَنًا إِلَّا بِالِانْتِقَامِ لَكَ، وَأَوْجِدْنِي بَرْدَ عَفْوِكَ، وَحَلَاوَةَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَرَوْحِكَ وَرَيْحَانِكَ وَجَنَّةِ نَعِيمِكَ، وَأَذِقْنِي طَعْمَ الْفَرَاغِ لِمَا تُحِبُّ بِسَعَةٍ مِنْ سَعَتِكَ،

Walā tabaʿan illā limarḍātika, walā mumtahanan illā bi-al-intiqāmi laka, wa-awjidnī barda ʿafwika, waḥalāwata raḥmatika warawḥika warayḥānika wajannati naʿīmika, wa-adhiqnī ṭaʿma al-farāghi limā tuḥibbu bisaʿatin min saʿatika,

Let me follow nothing but Your good pleasure, and be put to service only in vindicating Your cause. Let me find the coolness of Your pardon, the sweetness of Your mercy, Your relief, Your refreshment, and Your Garden of bliss. Let me taste freedom to pursue what You love, through the spaciousness You grant,

وَالِاجْتِهَادِ فِيمَا يُزْلِفُ لَدَيْكَ وَعِنْدَكَ، وَأَتْحِفْنِي بِتُحْفَةٍ مِنْ تُحَفَاتِكَ، وَاِجْعَلْ تِجَارَتِي رَابِحَةً، وَكَرَّتِي غَيْرَ خَاسِرَةٍ، وَأَخِفْنِي مَقَامَكَ، وَشَوِّقْنِي لِقَاءَكَ،

Wa-al-ijtihādi fīmā yuzlifu ladayka waʿindaka, wa-atḥifnī bituḥfatin min tuḥafātika, wa-ijʿal tijāratī rābiḥatan, wakarratī ghayra khāsiratin, wa-akhifnī maqāmaka, washawwiqnī liqāʾaka,

and the effort that brings me near You and into Your presence. Honour me with one of Your gifts. Make my trade profitable and my return free of loss. Make me fear standing before You, and make me long to meet You.

وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًا لَا تُبْقِ مَعَهَا ذُنُوبًا صَغِيرَةً وَلَا كَبِيرَةً، وَلَا تَذَرْ مَعَهَا عَلَانِيَةً وَلَا سَرِيرَةً، وَاِنْزِعِ الْغِلَّ مِنْ صَدْرِي لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ، وَاِعْطِفْ بِقَلْبِي عَلَى الْخَاشِعِينَ،

Watub ʿalayya tawbatan naṣūḥan lā tubqi maʿahā dhunūban ṣaghīratan walā kabīratan, walā tadhar maʿahā ʿalāniyatan walā sarīratan, wa-inziʿi al-ghilla min ṣadrī li-l-muʾminīna, wa-iʿṭif biqalbī ʿalā al-khāshiʿīna,

Turn towards me with a true acceptance of repentance that leaves no sin, small or great, and leaves nothing, outward or hidden. Remove rancour towards believers from my breast and incline my heart towards the humble.

وَكُنْ لِي كَمَا تَكُونُ لِلصَّالِحِينَ، وَحَلِّنِي حِلْيَةَ الْمُتَّقِينَ، وَاِجْعَلْ لِي لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الْغَابِرِينَ، وَذِكْرًا نَامِيًا فِي الْآخِرِينَ، وَوَافِ بِي عَرْصَةَ الْأَوَّلِينَ، وَتَمِّمْ سُبُوغَ نِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ،

Wakun lī kamā takūnu li-l-ṣāliḥīna, waḥallinī ḥilyata al-muttaqīna, wa-ijʿal lī lisāna ṣidqin fī al-ghābirīna, wadhikran nāmiyan fī al-ākhirīna, wawāfi bī ʿarṣata al-awwalīna, watammim subūgha niʿmatika ʿalayya,

Be to me as You are to the righteous, and adorn me with the adornment of those who revere You. Grant me an honourable remembrance among those who remain and a growing good name among later generations. Bring me to the gathering place of those who came before, and complete the fullness of Your favour upon me.

وَظَاهِرْ كَرَامَاتِهَا لَدَيَّ، وَاِمْلَأْ مِنْ فَوَائِدِكَ يَدَيَّ، وَسُقْ كَرَائِمَ مَوَاهِبِكَ إِلَيَّ، وَجَاوِرْ بِيَ الْأَطْيَبِينَ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكَ فِي الْجِنَانِ الَّتِي زَيَّنْتَهَا لِأَصْفِيَائِكَ،

Waẓāhir karāmātihā ladayya, wa-imlaʾ min fawāʾidika yadayya, wasuq karāʾima mawāhibika ilayya, wajāwir biya al-aṭyabīna min awliyāʾika fī al-jināni al-latī zayyantahā liʾaṣfiyāʾika,

Let its honours reach me one after another, fill both my hands with Your benefits, and bring me Your noblest gifts. Place me beside the purest of Your friends in the Gardens You have adorned for Your chosen ones.

وَجَلِّلْنِي شَرَائِفَ نِحَلِكَ فِي الْمَقَامَاتِ الْمُعَدَّةِ لِأَحِبَّائِكَ، وَاِجْعَلْ لِي عِنْدَكَ مَقِيلًا آوِي إِلَيْهِ مُطْمَئِنّاً، وَمَثَابَةً أَتَبَوَّأُهَا وَأَقَرُّ عَيْنًا.

Wajallilnī sharāʾifa niḥalika fī al-maqāmāti al-muʿaddati liʾaḥibbāʾika, wa-ijʿal lī ʿindaka maqīlan āwī ilayhi muṭmaʾinnan, wamathābatan atabawwaʾuhā wa-aqarru ʿaynan.

Cover me with Your most honoured gifts in the stations prepared for those You love. Give me a resting place with You to which I can turn in peace, and a home where I may settle with a contented heart.

وَلَا تُقَايِسْنِي بِعَظِيمَاتِ الْجَرَائِرِ، وَلَا تُهْلِكْنِي يَوْمَ تُبْلَى السَّرَائِرُ، وَأَزِلْ عَنِّي كُلَّ شَكٍّ وَشُبْهَةٍ، وَاِجْعَلْ لِي فِي الْحَقِّ طَرِيقًا مِنْ كُلِّ رَحْمَةٍ،

Walā tuqāyisnī biʿaẓīmāti al-jarāʾiri, walā tuhliknī yawma tublā al-sarāʾiru, wa-azil ʿannī kulla shakkin washubhatin, wa-ijʿal lī fī al-ḥaqqi ṭarīqan min kulli raḥmatin,

Do not measure me against my gravest offences, or destroy me on the day when hidden things are tested. Remove every doubt and uncertainty from me, and through every mercy make a path for me within the truth.

وَأَجْزِلْ لِي قِسَمَ الْمَوَاهِبِ مِنْ نَوَالِكَ، وَوَفِّرْ عَلَيَّ حُظُوظَ الْإِحْسَانِ مِنْ إِفْضَالِكَ، وَاِجْعَلْ قَلْبِي وَاثِقًا بِمَا عِنْدَكَ، وَهَمِّي مُسْتَفْرَغًا لِمَا هُوَ لَكَ، وَاِسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِمَا تَسْتَعْمِلُ بِهِ خَالِصَتَكَ،

Wa-ajzil lī qisama al-mawāhibi min nawālika, wawaffir ʿalayya ḥuẓūẓa al-iḥsāni min ifḍālika, wa-ijʿal qalbī wāthiqan bimā ʿindaka, wahammī mustafraghan limā huwa laka, wa-istaʿmilnī bimā tastaʿmilu bihi khāliṣataka,

Grant me generous portions of Your gifts and a full share of the kindness that flows from Your bounty. Make my heart trust what is with You and devote all my concern to what belongs to You. Employ me in the service in which You employ Your chosen servants.

وَأَشْرِبْ قَلْبِي عِنْدَ ذُهُولِ الْعُقُولِ طَاعَتَكَ، وَاِجْمَعْ لِيَ الْغِنَى، وَالْعَفَافَ، وَالدَّعَةَ، وَالْمُعَافَاةَ، وَالصِّحَّةَ، وَالسَّعَةَ، وَالطُّمَأْنِينَةَ، وَالْعَافِيَةَ، وَلَا تُحْبِطْ حَسَنَاتِي بِمَا يَشُوبُهَا مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ،

Wa-ashrib qalbī ʿinda dhuhūli al-ʿuqūli ṭāʿataka, wa-ijmaʿ liya al-ghinā, wa-al-ʿafāfa, wa-al-daʿata, wa-al-muʿāfāta, wa-al-ṣiḥḥata, wa-al-saʿata, wa-al-ṭumaʾnīnata, wa-al-ʿāfiyata, walā tuḥbiṭ ḥasanātī bimā yashūbuhā min maʿṣiyatika,

Let my heart drink in obedience to You when minds are bewildered. Gather for me sufficiency, chastity, ease, protection, health, abundance, tranquillity, and wellbeing. Do not let my good deeds be cancelled by the disobedience that taints them,

وَلَا خَلَوَاتِي بِمَا يَعْرِضُ لِي مِنْ نَزَغَاتِ فِتْنَتِكَ، وَصُنْ وَجْهِي عَنِ الطَّلَبِ إِلَى أَحَدٍ مِنَ الْعَالَمِينَ، وَذُبَّنِي عَنِ اِلْتِمَاسِ مَا عِنْدَ الْفَاسِقِينَ، وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي لِلظَّالِمِينَ ظَهِيرًا،

Walā khalawātī bimā yaʿriḍu lī min nazaghāti fitnatika, waṣun wajhī ʿani al-ṭalabi ilā aḥadin mina al-ʿālamīna, wadhubbanī ʿani iltimāsi mā ʿinda al-fāsiqīna, walā tajʿalnī li-l-ẓālimīna ẓahīran,

or my times of solitude by the promptings of temptation that confront me. Preserve my dignity from asking any creature, and keep me from seeking what the corrupt possess. Do not make me a supporter of wrongdoers,

وَلَا لَهُمْ عَلَى مَحْوِ كِتَابِكَ يَدًا وَنَصِيرًا، وَحُطْنِي مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا أَعْلَمُ حِيَاطَةً تَقِينِي بِهَا، وَاِفْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ تَوْبَتِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ وَرَأْفَتِكَ وَرِزْقِكَ الْوَاسِعِ، إِنِّي إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الرَّاغِبِينَ،

Walā lahum ʿalā maḥwi kitābika yadan wanaṣīran, waḥuṭnī min ḥaythu lā aʿlamu ḥiyāṭatan taqīnī bihā, wa-iftaḥ lī abwāba tawbatika waraḥmatika waraʾfatika warizqika al-wāsiʿi, innī ilayka mina al-rāghibīna,

or a helping hand to them in erasing Your Book. Surround me with protection, from where I do not know, that keeps me safe. Open to me the doors of Your acceptance of repentance, mercy, compassion, and abundant provision. I am among those who long for You.

وَأَتْمِمْ لِي إِنْعَامَكَ، إِنَّكَ خَيْرُ الْمُنْعِمِينَ، وَاِجْعَلْ بَاقِيَ عُمُرِي فِي الْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ اِبْتِغَاءَ وَجْهِكَ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ، وَصَلَّى اللَّٰهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ،

Wa-atmim lī inʿāmaka, innaka khayru al-munʿimīna, wa-ijʿal bāqiya ʿumurī fī al-ḥajji wa-al-ʿumrati ibtighāʾa wajhika yā rabba al-ʿālamīna, waṣallā Allāhu ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi al-ṭayyibīna al-ṭāhirīna,

Complete Your favour to me; You are the best of benefactors. Let the rest of my life be spent in the greater and lesser pilgrimages, seeking Your Face, O Lord of all worlds. May God bless Muhammad and his good and pure family,

وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمْ أَبَدَ الْآبِدِينَ.

Wa-al-salāmu ʿalayhi waʿalayhim abada al-ābidīna.

and may peace be upon him and upon them forever and ever.

Al-duʿāʾu 48

Prayer 48

فِي يَوْمِ الْأَضْحَى وَيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ

Fī yawmi al-aḍḥā wayawmi al-jumuʿati

On the Day of Sacrifice and on Friday

اللَّٰهُمَّ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ مُبَارَكٌ مَيْمُونٌ وَالْمُسْلِمُونَ فِيهِ مُجْتَمِعُونَ فِي أَقْطَارِ أَرْضِكَ،

Allāhumma hādhā yawmun mubārakun maymūnun wa-al-muslimūna fīhi mujtamiʿūna fī aqṭāri arḍika,

O God, this is a blessed, auspicious day, when the Muslims gather throughout Your earth.

يَشْهَدُ السَّائِلُ مِنْهُمْ وَالطَّالِبُ وَالرَّاغِبُ وَالرَّاهِبُ وَأَنْتَ النَّاظِرُ فِي حَوَائِجِهِمْ فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ وَهَوَانِ مَا سَأَلْتُكَ عَلَيْكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَسْأَلُكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ رَبَّنَا بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْمُلْكَ وَلَكَ الْحَمْدَ،

Yashhadu al-sāʾilu minhum wa-al-ṭālibu wa-al-rāghibu wa-al-rāhibu wa-anta al-nāẓiru fī ḥawāʾijihim fa-asʾaluka bijūdika wakaramika wahawāni mā saʾaltuka ʿalayka an tuṣalliya ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-asʾaluka Allāhumma rabbanā biʾanna laka al-mulka walaka al-ḥamda,

Among those present are people asking, seeking, hoping and fearing, while You attend to their needs. By Your generosity and bounty, and by how little what I ask costs You, I ask You to bless Muhammad and his family. O God, our Lord, I ask You, since sovereignty and praise are Yours—

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، الْحَلِيمُ الْكَرِيمُ الْحَنَّانُ الْمَنَّانُ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، بَدِيعُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ،

Lā ilāha illā anta, al-ḥalīmu al-karīmu al-ḥannānu al-mannānu dhū al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi, badīʿu al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi,

there is no god but You, the Forbearing, the Generous, the Tenderly Compassionate, the Bestower of gifts, Possessor of majesty and honour, Originator of the heavens and the earth—

مَهْمَا قَسَمْتَ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ مِنْ خَيْرٍ أَوْ عَافِيَةٍ أَوْ بَرَكَةٍ أَوْ هُدًى أَوْ عَمَلٍ بِطَاعَتِكَ،

Mahmā qasamta bayna ʿibādika al-muʾminīna min khayrin aw ʿāfiyatin aw barakatin aw hudan aw ʿamalin biṭāʿatika,

that whatever goodness, well-being, blessing, guidance or obedient deed You apportion among Your faithful servants,

أَوْ خَيْرٍ تَمُنُّ بِهِ عَلَيْهِمْ تَهْدِيهِمْ بِهِ إِلَيْكَ أَوْ تَرْفَعُ لَهُمْ عِنْدَكَ دَرَجَةً، أَوْ تُعْطِيهِمْ بِهِ خَيْرًا مِنْ خَيْرِ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.

Aw khayrin tamunnu bihi ʿalayhim tahdīhim bihi ilayka aw tarfaʿu lahum ʿindaka darajatan, aw tuʿṭīhim bihi khayran min khayri al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati.

or whatever good You graciously grant them, through which You guide them to Yourself, raise their standing with You, or give them some good of this world and the next,

أَنْ تُوَفِّرَ حَظِّي وَنَصِيبِي مِنْهُ وَأَسْأَلُكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ بِأَنَّ لَكَ الْمُلْكَ وَالْحَمْدَ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ وَحَبِيبِكَ وَصِفْوَتِكَ،

An tuwaffira ḥaẓẓī wanaṣībī minhu wa-asʾaluka Allāhumma biʾanna laka al-mulka wa-al-ḥamda lā ilāha illā anta an tuṣalliya ʿalā muḥammadin ʿabdika warasūlika waḥabībika waṣifwatika,

You make my share and portion of it abundant. O God, I ask You, since sovereignty and praise are Yours and there is no god but You, to bless Muhammad, Your servant, messenger and beloved, Your chosen one,

وَ خِيَرَتِكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ الْأَبْرَارِ الطَّاهِرِينَ الْأَخْيَارِ،

Wa khiyaratika min khalqika waʿalā āli muḥammadin al-abrāri al-ṭāhirīna al-akhyāri,

whom You selected from Your creation, and the family of Muhammad, the righteous, pure and good,

صَلَاةً لَا يَقْوَى عَلَى إِحْصَائِهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ وَأَنْ تُشْرِكَنَا فِي صَالِحِ مَنْ دَعَاكَ فِي هَٰذَا الْيَوْمِ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ، وَ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لَنَا وَلَهُمْ.

Ṣalātan lā yaqwā ʿalā iḥṣāʾihā illā anta wa-an tushrikanā fī ṣāliḥi man daʿāka fī hādhā al-yawmi min ʿibādika al-muʾminīna, yā rabba al-ʿālamīna, wa an taghfira lanā walahum.

with a blessing whose measure none but You can count. Include us in the good granted to Your faithful servants who call upon You on this day, Lord of all worlds, and forgive us and them.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ اللَّٰهُمَّ إِلَيْكَ تَعَمَّدْتُ بِحَاجَتِي وَبِكَ أَنْزَلْتُ الْيَوْمَ فَقْرِي،

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun Allāhumma ilayka taʿammadtu biḥājatī wabika anzaltu al-yawma faqrī,

You have power over all things. O God, I have turned deliberately to You with my need, and today I lay before You my poverty,

وَ فَاقَتِي وَمَسْكَنَتِي وَإِنِّي بِمَغْفِرَتِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ أَوْثَقُ مِنِّي بِعَمَلِي وَلَمَغْفِرَتُكَ وَرَحْمَتُكَ أَوْسَعُ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَتَوَلَّ قَضَاءَ كُلِّ حَاجَةٍ هِيَ لِي بِقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَيْهَا،

Wa fāqatī wamaskanatī wa-innī bimaghfiratika waraḥmatika awthaqu minnī biʿamalī walamaghfiratuka waraḥmatuka awsaʿu min dhunūbī faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin, watawalla qaḍāʾa kulli ḥājatin hiya lī biqudratika ʿalayhā,

my want and my helplessness. I trust Your forgiveness and mercy more than my deeds; Your forgiveness and mercy are greater than my sins. So bless Muhammad and his family, and undertake to fulfil every need of mine, through Your power to do so,

وَتَيْسِيرِ ذَٰلِكَ عَلَيْكَ وَبِفَقْرِي إِلَيْكَ وَغِنَاكَ عَنِّي، فَإِنِّي لَمْ أُصِبْ خَيْرًا قَطُّ إِلَّا مِنْكَ،

Wataysīri dhālika ʿalayka wabifaqrī ilayka waghināka ʿannī, fa-innī lam uṣib khayran qaṭṭu illā minka,

through its ease for You, through my need of You and Your freedom from need of me. No good has ever reached me except from You,

وَلَمْ يَصْرِفْ عَنِّي سُوءًا قَطُّ أَحَدٌ غَيْرُكَ وَلَا أَرْجُو لِأَمْرِ آخِرَتِي وَدُنْيَايَ سِوَاكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ مَنْ تَهَيَّأَ وَتَعَبَّأَ وَأَعَدَّ وَاِسْتَعَدَّ لِوِفَادَةٍ إِلَى مَخْلُوقٍ رَجَاءَ رِفْدِهِ وَنَوَافِلِهِ وَطَلَبَ نَيْلِهِ وَجَائِزَتِهِ

Walam yaṣrif ʿannī sūʾan qaṭṭu aḥadun ghayruka walā arjū liʾamri ākhiratī wadunyāya siwāka Allāhumma man tahayyaʾa wataʿabbaʾa wa-aʿadda wa-istaʿadda liwifādatin ilā makhlūqin rajāʾa rifdihi wanawāfilihi waṭalaba naylihi wajāʾizatihi

and no one but You has ever turned harm away from me. For the affairs of my next life and this life, I hope in no one but You. O God, others may prepare, equip themselves, make ready and stand prepared to visit a creature, hoping for his assistance and additional gifts and seeking his favour and reward;

فَإِلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلَايَ كَانَتِ الْيَوْمَ تَهْيِئَتِي وَتَعْبِئَتِي وَإِعْدَادِي وَاِسْتِعْدَادِي رَجَاءَ عَفْوِكَ وَرِفْدِكَ وَطَلَبَ نَيْلِكَ وَجَائِزَتِكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَلَا تُخَيِّبِ الْيَوْمَ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ رَجَائِي،

Fa-ilayka yā mawlāya kānati al-yawma tahyiʾatī wataʿbiʾatī wa-iʿdādī wa-istiʿdādī rajāʾa ʿafwika warifdika waṭalaba naylika wajāʾizatika Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin walā tukhayyibi al-yawma dhālika min rajāʾī,

but today, my Master, my preparation, equipment and readiness have been directed to You, hoping for Your pardon and assistance and seeking Your favour and reward. O God, bless Muhammad and his family, and do not disappoint that hope of mine today.

يَا مَنْ لَا يُحْفِيهِ سَائِلٌ وَلَا يَنْقُصُهُ نَائِلٌ فَإِنِّي لَمْ آتِكَ ثِقَةً مِنِّي بِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ قَدَّمْتُهُ وَلَا شَفَاعَةِ مَخْلُوقٍ رَجَوْتُهُ إِلَّا شَفَاعَةَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ

Yā man lā yuḥfīhi sāʾilun walā yanquṣuhu nāʾilun fa-innī lam ātika thiqatan minnī biʿamalin ṣāliḥin qaddamtuhu walā shafāʿati makhlūqin rajawtuhu illā shafāʿata muḥammadin wa-ahli baytihi

O You whom no petitioner wearies and no gift diminishes! I have not come to You trusting in a good deed I have sent ahead, or hoping in any creature’s intercession except the intercession of Muhammad and the people of his household—

عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيْهِمْ سَلَامُكَ أَتَيْتُكَ مُقِرّاً بِالْجُرْمِ وَالْإِسَاءَةِ إِلَى نَفْسِي أَتَيْتُكَ أَرْجُو عَظِيمَ عَفْوِكَ الَّذِي عَفَوْتَ بِهِ عَنِ الْخَاطِئِينَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ طُولُ عُكُوفِهِمْ عَلَى عَظِيمِ الْجُرْمِ

ʿalayhi waʿalayhim salāmuka ataytuka muqirran bi-al-jurmi wa-al-isāʾati ilā nafsī ataytuka arjū ʿaẓīma ʿafwika al-ladhī ʿafawta bihi ʿani al-khāṭiʾīna thumma lam yamnaʿka ṭūlu ʿukūfihim ʿalā ʿaẓīmi al-jurmi

Your peace be upon him and upon them. I have come to You admitting my offence and the wrong I have done myself. I have come hoping for Your immense pardon, with which You have pardoned sinners. Their long persistence in grave wrongdoing did not prevent You

أَنْ عُدْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِالرَّحْمَةِ وَالْمَغْفِرَةِ فَيَا مَنْ رَحْمَتُهُ وَاسِعَةٌ وَعَفْوُهُ عَظِيمٌ،

An ʿudta ʿalayhim bi-al-raḥmati wa-al-maghfirati fayā man raḥmatuhu wāsiʿatun waʿafwuhu ʿaẓīmun,

from returning to them with mercy and forgiveness. O You whose mercy is boundless and whose pardon is immense!

يَا عَظِيمُ يَا عَظِيمُ يَا كَرِيمُ يَا كَرِيمُ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعُدْ عَلَيَّ بِرَحْمَتِكَ وَتَعَطَّفْ عَلَيَّ بِفَضْلِكَ وَتَوَسَّعْ عَلَيَّ بِمَغْفِرَتِكَ.

Yā ʿaẓīmu yā ʿaẓīmu yā karīmu yā karīmu ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin waʿud ʿalayya biraḥmatika wataʿaṭṭaf ʿalayya bifaḍlika watawassaʿ ʿalayya bimaghfiratika.

O Great One, O Great One! O Generous One, O Generous One! Bless Muhammad and his family, return to me with Your mercy, show me tenderness through Your favour, and lavish Your forgiveness upon me.

اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنَّ هَٰذَا الْمَقَامَ لِخُلَفَائِكَ وَأَصْفِيَائِكَ وَمَوَاضِعَ أُمَنَائِكَ فِي الدَّرَجَةِ الرَّفِيعَةِ الَّتِي اِخْتَصَصْتَهُمْ بِهَا قَدِ اِبْتَزُّوهَا وَأَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّرُ لِذَٰلِكَ لَا يُغَالَبُ أَمْرُكَ

Allāhumma inna hādhā al-maqāma likhulafāʾika wa-aṣfiyāʾika wamawāḍiʿa umanāʾika fī al-darajati al-rafīʿati al-latī ikhtaṣaṣtahum bihā qadi ibtazzūhā wa-anta al-muqaddiru lidhālika lā yughālabu amruka

O God, this station belongs to Your successors and chosen ones; the positions of Your trusted ones, in the lofty rank You reserved for them, have been seized from them. You are the One who has ordained this: Your command cannot be overcome,

وَلَا يُجَاوَزُ الْمَحْتُومُ مِنْ تَدْبِيرِكَ كَيْفَ شِئْتَ وَأَنَّى شِئْتَ وَلِمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ غَيْرُ مُتَّهَمٍ عَلَى خَلْقِكَ وَلَا لِإِرَادَتِكَ حَتَّى عَادَ صِفْوَتُكَ وَخُلَفَاؤُكَ مَغْلُوبِينَ مَقْهُورِينَ مُبْتَزِّينَ يَرَوْنَ حُكْمَكَ مُبَدَّلًا وَكِتَابَكَ مَنْبُوذًا،

Walā yujāwazu al-maḥtūmu min tadbīrika kayfa shiʾta wa-annā shiʾta walimā anta aʿlamu bihi ghayru muttahamin ʿalā khalqika walā liʾirādatika ḥattā ʿāda ṣifwatuka wakhulafāʾuka maghlūbīna maqhūrīna mubtazzīna yarawna ḥukmaka mubaddalan wakitābaka manbūdhan,

and what Your governance has made certain cannot be overstepped—however You will, wherever You will, and for reasons best known to You. No charge can be brought against You concerning Your creation or Your will. Yet Your chosen ones and successors have become overpowered, subdued and dispossessed, seeing Your judgement altered and Your Book cast aside,

وَفَرَائِضَكَ مُحَرَّفَةً عَنْ جِهَاتِ أَشْرَاعِكَ وَسُنَنَ نَبِيِّكَ مَتْرُوكَةً اللَّٰهُمَّ اِلْعَنْ أَعْدَاءَهُمْ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ وَمَنْ رَضِيَ بِفِعَالِهِمْ وَأَشْيَاعَهُمْ وَأَتْبَاعَهُمْ

Wafarāʾiḍaka muḥarrafatan ʿan jihāti ashrāʿika wasunana nabiyyika matrūkatan Allāhumma ilʿan aʿdāʾahum mina al-awwalīna wa-al-ākhirīna waman raḍiya bifiʿālihim wa-ashyāʿahum wa-atbāʿahum

Your obligations diverted from the paths You prescribed, and the practices of Your Prophet abandoned. O God, curse their enemies, first and last, those who approve of their actions, their partisans and their followers.

اللَّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ كَصَلَوَاتِكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ وَتَحِيَّاتِكَ عَلَى أَصْفِيَائِكَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَآلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَجِّلِ الْفَرَجَ وَالرَّوْحَ وَالنُّصْرَةَ وَالتَّمْكِينَ وَالتَّأْيِيدَ لَهُمْ اللَّٰهُمَّ وَاِجْعَلْنِي مِنْ أَهْلِ التَّوْحِيدِ وَالْإِيمَانِ بِكَ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin innaka ḥamīdun majīdun kaṣalawātika wabarakātika wataḥiyyātika ʿalā aṣfiyāʾika ibrāhīma wa-āli ibrāhīma waʿajjili al-faraja wa-al-rawḥa wa-al-nuṣrata wa-al-tamkīna wa-al-taʾyīda lahum Allāhumma wa-ijʿalnī min ahli al-tawḥīdi wa-al-īmāni bika

O God, bless Muhammad and his family—You are worthy of praise, full of glory—as You have bestowed Your blessings, benedictions and greetings upon Your chosen ones, Abraham and his family. Hasten relief, ease, victory, secure authority and support for them. O God, place me among those who affirm Your oneness and believe in You,

وَالتَّصْدِيقِ بِرَسُولِكَ وَالْأَئِمَّةِ الَّذِينَ حَتَمْتَ طَاعَتَهُمْ مِمَّنْ يَجْرِي ذَٰلِكَ بِهِ وَعَلَى يَدَيْهِ آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ اللَّٰهُمَّ لَيْسَ يَرُدُّ غَضَبَكَ إِلَّا حِلْمُكَ،

Wa-al-taṣdīqi birasūlika wa-al-aʾimmati al-ladhīna ḥatamta ṭāʿatahum mimman yajrī dhālika bihi waʿalā yadayhi āmīna rabba al-ʿālamīna Allāhumma laysa yaruddu ghaḍabaka illā ḥilmuka,

who acknowledge Your messenger and the imams whose obedience You have made binding; make me one through whom and at whose hands this comes to pass. Amen, Lord of all worlds. O God, nothing turns back Your anger but Your forbearance,

وَلَا يَرُدُّ سَخَطَكَ إِلَّا عَفْوُكَ وَلَا يُجِيرُ مِنْ عِقَابِكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَتُكَ وَلَا يُنْجِينِي مِنْكَ إِلَّا التَّضَرُّعُ إِلَيْكَ وَبَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Walā yaruddu sakhaṭaka illā ʿafwuka walā yujīru min ʿiqābika illā raḥmatuka walā yunjīnī minka illā al-taḍarruʿu ilayka wabayna yadayka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin

and nothing turns back Your displeasure but Your pardon. Nothing offers protection from Your punishment but Your mercy, and nothing saves me from You but humble pleading to You and before You. So bless Muhammad and his family,

وَهَبْ لَنَا يَا إِلَٰهِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ فَرَجًا بِالْقُدْرَةِ الَّتِي بِهَا تُحْيِي أَمْوَاتَ الْعِبَادِ وَبِهَا تَنْشُرُ مَيْتَ الْبِلَادِ.

Wahab lanā yā ilāhī min ladunka farajan bi-al-qudrati al-latī bihā tuḥyī amwāta al-ʿibādi wabihā tanshuru mayta al-bilādi.

and grant us relief from Yourself, my God, through the power by which You bring dead servants to life and revive lifeless lands.

وَلَا تُهْلِكْنِي يَا إِلَٰهِي غَمّاً حَتَّى تَسْتَجِيبَ لِي وَتُعَرِّفَنِي الْإِجَابَةَ فِي دُعَائِي وَأَذِقْنِي طَعْمَ الْعَافِيَةِ إِلَى مُنْتَهَى أَجَلِي وَلَا تُشْمِتْ بِي عَدُوِّي وَلَا تُمَكِّنْهُ مِنْ عُنُقِي

Walā tuhliknī yā ilāhī ghamman ḥattā tastajība lī watuʿarrifanī al-ijābata fī duʿāʾī wa-adhiqnī ṭaʿma al-ʿāfiyati ilā muntahā ajalī walā tushmit bī ʿaduwwī walā tumakkinhu min ʿunuqī

Do not let grief destroy me, my God, before You answer me and make me recognise the answer to my prayer. Let me taste well-being until the end of my life. Do not let my enemy rejoice at my misfortune, take hold of my neck,

وَلَا تُسَلِّطْهُ عَلَيَّ إِلَٰهِي إِنْ رَفَعْتَنِي فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَضَعُنِي وَإِنْ وَضَعْتَنِي فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَرْفَعُنِي وَإِنْ أَكْرَمْتَنِي فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُهِينُنِي وَإِنْ أَهَنْتَنِي فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُكْرِمُنِي

Walā tusalliṭhu ʿalayya ilāhī in rafaʿtanī faman dhā al-ladhī yaḍaʿunī wa-in waḍaʿtanī faman dhā al-ladhī yarfaʿunī wa-in akramtanī faman dhā al-ladhī yuhīnunī wa-in ahantanī faman dhā al-ladhī yukrimunī

or gain power over me. My God, if You raise me, who can bring me low? If You bring me low, who can raise me? If You honour me, who can humiliate me? If You humiliate me, who can honour me?

وَإِنْ عَذَّبْتَنِي فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَرْحَمُنِي وَإِنْ أَهْلَكْتَنِي فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَعْرِضُ لَكَ فِي عَبْدِكَ أَوْ يَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ أَمْرِهِ وَقَدْ عَلِمْتُ أَنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي حُكْمِكَ ظُلْمٌ

Wa-in ʿadhdhabtanī faman dhā al-ladhī yarḥamunī wa-in ahlaktanī faman dhā al-ladhī yaʿriḍu laka fī ʿabdika aw yasʾaluka ʿan amrihi waqad ʿalimtu annahu laysa fī ḥukmika ẓulmun

If You punish me, who can show me mercy? If You destroy me, who can intervene with You concerning Your servant, or question You about his affair? I know that there is no injustice in Your judgement

وَلَا فِي نَقِمَتِكَ عَجَلَةٌ وَإِنَّمَا يَعْجَلُ مَنْ يَخَافُ الْفَوْتَ وَإِنَّمَا يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى الظُّلْمِ الضَّعِيفُ وَقَدْ تَعَالَيْتَ يَا إِلَٰهِي عَنْ ذَٰلِكَ عُلُوّاً كَبِيرًا اللَّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي لِلْبَلَاءِ غَرَضًا،

Walā fī naqimatika ʿajalatun wa-innamā yaʿjalu man yakhāfu al-fawta wa-innamā yaḥtāju ilā al-ẓulmi al-ḍaʿīfu waqad taʿālayta yā ilāhī ʿan dhālika ʿuluwwan kabīran Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin walā tajʿalnī li-l-balāʾi gharaḍan,

and no haste in Your retribution. Only someone who fears missing his chance acts hastily; only the weak need to act unjustly. You are far, far above that, my God. O God, bless Muhammad and his family, and do not make me a target for affliction

وَلَا لِنَقِمَتِكَ نَصَبًا وَمَهِّلْنِي،

Walā linaqimatika naṣaban wamahhilnī,

or an object of Your vengeance. Give me respite,

وَنَفِّسْنِي وَأَقِلْنِي عَثْرَتِي وَلَا تَبْتَلِيَنِّي بِبَلَاءٍ عَلَى أَثَرِ بَلَاءٍ فَقَدْ تَرَى ضَعْفِي وَقِلَّةَ حِيلَتِي وَتَضَرُّعِي إِلَيْكَ أَعُوذُ بِكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ غَضَبِكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَعِذْنِي.

Wanaffisnī wa-aqilnī ʿathratī walā tabtaliyannī bibalāʾin ʿalā athari balāʾin faqad tarā ḍaʿfī waqillata ḥīlatī wataḍarruʿī ilayka aʿūdhu bika Allāhumma al-yawma min ghaḍabika faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-aʿidhnī.

grant me breathing room, and overlook my stumble. Do not test me with one affliction after another. You see my weakness, my lack of resources and my humble pleading to You. O God, today I seek refuge in You from Your anger: bless Muhammad and his family, and give me refuge.

وَأَسْتَجِيرُ بِكَ الْيَوْمَ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَجِرْنِي وَأَسْأَلُكَ أَمْنًا مِنْ عَذَابِكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Wa-astajīru bika al-yawma min sakhaṭika faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-ajirnī wa-asʾaluka amnan min ʿadhābika faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Today I seek Your protection from Your displeasure: bless Muhammad and his family, and protect me. I ask You for safety from Your punishment: bless Muhammad and his family,

وَآمِنِّي وَأَسْتَهْدِيكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَاِهْدِنِي وَأَسْتَنْصِرُكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، وَاُنْصُرْنِي وَأَسْتَرْحِمُكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، وَاِرْحَمْنِي وَأَسْتَكْفِيكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Wa-āminnī wa-astahdīka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-ihdinī wa-astanṣiruka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, wa-unṣurnī wa-astarḥimuka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, wa-irḥamnī wa-astakfīka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

and make me safe. I ask You for guidance: bless Muhammad and his family, and guide me. I ask You for victory: bless Muhammad and his family, and grant me victory. I ask You for mercy: bless Muhammad and his family, and have mercy on me. I ask You to suffice me: bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاِكْفِنِي وَأَسْتَرْزِقُكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، وَاُرْزُقْنِي وَأَسْتَعِينُكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَعِنِّي وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا سَلَفَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Wa-ikfinī wa-astarziquka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, wa-urzuqnī wa-astaʿīnuka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-aʿinnī wa-astaghfiruka limā salafa min dhunūbī faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

and suffice me. I ask You for provision: bless Muhammad and his family, and provide for me. I ask You for help: bless Muhammad and his family, and help me. I ask Your forgiveness for my past sins: bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاِغْفِرْ لِي وَأَسْتَعْصِمُكَ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، وَاِعْصِمْنِي فَإِنِّي لَنْ أَعُودَ لِشَيْءٍ كَرِهْتَهُ مِنِّي إِنْ شِئْتَ ذَٰلِكَ يَا رَبِّ يَا رَبِّ،

Wa-ighfir lī wa-astaʿṣimuka faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi, wa-iʿṣimnī fa-innī lan aʿūda lishayʾin karihtahu minnī in shiʾta dhālika yā rabbi yā rabbi,

and forgive me. I ask You to guard me from sin: bless Muhammad and his family, and guard me. I shall not return to anything You have disliked in me, if You will it so. My Lord, my Lord!

يَا حَنَّانُ يَا مَنَّانُ يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَاِسْتَجِبْ لِي جَمِيعَ مَا سَأَلْتُكَ وَطَلَبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَرَغِبْتُ فِيهِ إِلَيْكَ وَأَرِدْهُ وَقَدِّرْهُ وَاِقْضِهِ وَأَمْضِهِ

Yā ḥannānu yā mannānu yā dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-istajib lī jamīʿa mā saʾaltuka waṭalabtu ilayka waraghibtu fīhi ilayka wa-arid-hu waqaddirhu wa-iqḍihi wa-amḍihi

O Tenderly Compassionate One, Bestower of gifts, Possessor of majesty and honour! Bless Muhammad and his family, and answer me in everything I have asked of You, sought from You and desired from You. Will it, ordain it, decree it and bring it to fulfilment.

وَخِرْ لِي فِيمَا تَقْضِي مِنْهُ وَبَارِكْ لِي فِي ذَٰلِكَ وَتَفَضَّلْ عَلَيَّ بِهِ وَأَسْعِدْنِي بِمَا تُعْطِينِي مِنْهُ وَزِدْنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ وَسَعَةِ مَا عِنْدَكَ فَإِنَّكَ وَاسِعٌ كَرِيمٌ

Wakhir lī fīmā taqḍī minhu wabārik lī fī dhālika watafaḍḍal ʿalayya bihi wa-asʿidnī bimā tuʿṭīnī minhu wazidnī min faḍlika wasaʿati mā ʿindaka fa-innaka wāsiʿun karīmun

Choose what is best for me in whatever You decree of it; bless it for me, graciously bestow it on me, and make me happy with what You give me of it. Increase my share of Your favour and the abundance You possess, for You are all-embracing and generous.

وَصِلْ ذَٰلِكَ بِخَيْرِ الْآخِرَةِ وَنَعِيمِهَا يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

Waṣil dhālika bikhayri al-ākhirati wanaʿīmihā yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna

Join to that the good of the next life and its bliss, most merciful of those who show mercy.

تَدْعُو بِمَا بَدَا لَكَ، وَتُصَلِّي عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ أَلْفَ مَرَّةٍ هَٰكَذَا كَانَ يَفْعَلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

Tadʿū bimā badā laka, watuṣallī ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi alfa marratin hākadhā kāna yafʿalu ʿalayhi al-salāmu

[Pray for whatever occurs to you, and invoke blessings upon Muhammad and his family a thousand times. This is what he, peace be upon him, used to do.]

الدُّعَاءُ ٤٩

Al-duʿāʾu 49

Prayer 49

فِي دَفْعِ كَيْدِ الْأَعْدَاءِ وَرَدِّ بَأْسِهِمْ

Fī dafʿi kaydi al-aʿdāʾi waraddi baʾsihim

To repel enemies’ plots and ward off their violence

إِلَٰهِي هَدَيْتَنِي فَلَهَوْتُ، وَوَعَظْتَ فَقَسَوْتُ، وَأَبْلَيْتَ الْجَمِيلَ فَعَصَيْتُ، ثُمَّ عَرَفْتُ مَا أَصْدَرْتَ؟

Ilāhī hadaytanī falahawtu, wawaʿaẓta faqasawtu, wa-ablayta al-jamīla faʿaṣaytu, thumma ʿaraftu mā aṣdarta?

My God, You guided me, but I gave myself to distraction; You admonished me, but I hardened my heart; You treated me kindly, but I disobeyed. Then I recognised what You had turned me away from,

إِذْ عَرَّفْتَنِيهِ فَاِسْتَغْفَرْتُ، فَأَقَلْتَ فَعُدْتُ، فَسَتَرْتَ فَلَكَ إِلَٰهِي الْحَمْدُ.

Idh ʿarraftanīhi fa-istaghfartu, fa-aqalta faʿudtu, fasatarta falaka ilāhī al-ḥamdu.

when You made it known to me, and I sought forgiveness. You overlooked my offence, but I returned to it, and You concealed it. To You, my God, belongs praise.

تَقَحَّمْتُ أَوْدِيَةَ الْهَلَاكِ، وَحَلَلْتُ شِعَابَ تَلَفٍ تَعَرَّضْتُ فِيهَا لِسَطَوَاتِكَ، وَبِحُلُولِهَا عُقُوبَاتِكَ، وَوَسِيلَتِي إِلَيْكَ التَّوْحِيدُ، وَذَرِيعَتِي أَنِّي لَمْ أُشْرِكْ بِكَ شَيْئًا، وَلَمْ أَتَّخِذْ مَعَكَ إِلَٰهًا،

Taqaḥḥamtu awdiyata al-halāki, waḥalaltu shiʿāba talafin taʿarraḍtu fīhā lisaṭawātika, wabiḥulūlihā ʿuqūbātika, wawasīlatī ilayka al-tawḥīdu, wadharīʿatī annī lam ushrik bika shayʾan, walam attakhidh maʿaka ilāhan,

I plunged into valleys of destruction and settled in ravines of ruin, exposing myself there to Your might and, by settling there, to Your punishments. My means of approach to You is affirming Your oneness; my plea is that I have associated nothing with You and have taken no other god beside You.

وَقَدْ فَرَرْتُ إِلَيْكَ بِنَفْسِي، وَإِلَيْكَ مَفَرُّ الْمُسِيءِ، وَمَفْزَعُ الْمُضَيِّعِ لِحَظِّ نَفْسِهِ، الْمُلْتَجِئِ.

Waqad farartu ilayka binafsī, wa-ilayka mafarru al-musīʾi, wamafzaʿu al-muḍayyiʿi liḥaẓẓi nafsihi, al-multajiʾi.

I have fled to You with my very self. To You the wrongdoer flees; to You the one who has squandered his own good turns in alarm, seeking shelter.

فَكَمْ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ اِنْتَضَى عَلَيَّ سَيْفَ عَدَاوَتِهِ، وَشَحَذَ لِي ظُبَةَ مُدْيَتِهِ، وَأَرْهَفَ لِي شَبَا حَدِّهِ، وَدَافَ لِي قَوَاتِلَ سُمُومِهِ، وَسَدَّدَ نَحْوِي صَوَائِبَ سِهَامِهِ،

Fakam min ʿaduwwin intaḍā ʿalayya sayfa ʿadāwatihi, washaḥadha lī ẓubata mudyatihi, wa-arhafa lī shabā ḥaddihi, wadāfa lī qawātila sumūmihi, wasaddada naḥwī ṣawāʾiba sihāmihi,

How many an enemy drew the sword of his hostility against me, sharpened the edge of his knife for me, honed its blade, mixed his deadly poisons for me, and aimed his unerring arrows at me!

وَلَمْ تَنَمْ عَنِّي عَيْنُ حِرَاسَتِهِ، وَأَضْمَرَ أَنْ يَسُومَنِي الْمَكْرُوهَ وَيُجَرِّعَنِي زُعَافَ مَرَارَتِهِ، فَنَظَرْتَ يَا إِلَٰهِي إِلَى ضَعْفِي عَنِ اِحْتِمَالِ الْفَوَادِحِ، وَعَجْزِي عَنِ الِانْتِصَارِ مِمَّنْ قَصَدَنِي بِمُحَارَبَتِهِ،

Walam tanam ʿannī ʿaynu ḥirāsatihi, wa-aḍmara an yasūmanī al-makrūha wayujarriʿanī zuʿāfa marāratihi, fanaẓarta yā ilāhī ilā ḍaʿfī ʿani iḥtimāli al-fawādiḥi, waʿajzī ʿani al-intiṣāri mimman qaṣadanī bimuḥārabatihi,

His watchful eye never slept where I was concerned. He secretly intended to inflict harm on me and make me swallow the deadly poison of his bitterness. Then, my God, You saw how weak I was to bear crushing blows, how unable to defend myself against the one who set out to fight me,

وَوَحْدَتِي فِي كَثِيرِ عَدَدِ مَنْ نَاوَانِي وَأَرْصَدَ لِي بِالْبَلَاءِ فِيمَا لَمْ أُعْمِلْ فِيهِ فِكْرِي، فَاِبْتَدَأْتَنِي بِنَصْرِكَ، وَشَدَدْتَ أَزْرِي بِقُوَّتِكَ، ثُمَّ فَلَلْتَ لِي حَدَّهُ،

Wawaḥdatī fī kathīri ʿadadi man nāwānī wa-arṣada lī bi-al-balāʾi fīmā lam uʿmil fīhi fikrī, fa-ibtadaʾtanī binaṣrika, washadadta azrī biquwwatika, thumma falalta lī ḥaddahu,

and how alone I was amid the many who opposed me and lay in wait to afflict me in ways I had never imagined. You took the initiative in helping me and strengthened my resolve with Your power. Then You blunted his edge for me,

وَصَيَّرْتَهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ جَمْعٍ عَدِيدٍ وَحْدَهُ، وَأَعْلَيْتَ كَعْبِي عَلَيْهِ، وَجَعَلْتَ مَا سَدَّدَهُ مَرْدُودًا عَلَيْهِ، فَرَدَدْتَهُ لَمْ يَشْفِ غَيْظَهُ، وَلَمْ يَسْكُنْ غَلِيلُهُ، قَدْ عَضَّ عَلَى شَوَاهُ،

Waṣayyartahu min baʿdi jamʿin ʿadīdin waḥdahu, wa-aʿlayta kaʿbī ʿalayhi, wajaʿalta mā saddadahu mardūdan ʿalayhi, faradadtahu lam yashfi ghayẓahu, walam yaskun ghalīluhu, qad ʿaḍḍa ʿalā shawāhu,

left him alone after he had gathered a large force, gave me the upper hand over him, and turned what he had aimed at me back upon him. You drove him back, his fury unappeased and his burning rage uncooled, biting his own fingers in anger,

وَأَدْبَرَ مُوَلِّيًا قَدْ أَخْلَفَتْ سَرَايَاهُ.

Wa-adbara muwalliyan qad akhlafat sarāyāhu.

turning away in retreat, his raiding parties having failed him.

وَكَمْ مِنْ بَاغٍ بَغَانِي بِمَكَائِدِهِ، وَنَصَبَ لِي شَرَكَ مَصَائِدِهِ، وَوَكَّلَ بِي تَفَقُّدَ رِعَايَتِهِ، وَأَضْبَأَ إِلَيَّ إِضْبَاءَ السَّبُعِ لِطَرِيدَتِهِ، اِنْتِظَارًا لِانْتِهَازِ الْفُرْصَةِ لِفَرِيسَتِهِ، وَهُوَ يُظْهِرُ لِي بَشَاشَةَ الْمَلَقِ،

Wakam min bāghin baghānī bimakāʾidihi, wanaṣaba lī sharaka maṣāʾidihi, wawakkala bī tafaqquda riʿāyatihi, wa-aḍbaʾa ilayya iḍbāʾa al-sabuʿi liṭarīdatihi, intiẓāran lintihāzi al-furṣati lifarīsatihi, wahuwa yuẓhiru lī bashāshata al-malaqi,

How many an aggressor pursued me with his schemes, set the net of his traps for me, and kept me under careful surveillance! He crouched in ambush for me like a wild beast stalking its quarry, waiting for a chance to seize its prey, while showing me a flattering smile

وَيَنْظُرُنِي عَلَى شِدَّةِ الْحَنَقِ، فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتَ يَا إِلَٰهِي تَبَارَكْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ دَغَلَ سَرِيرَتِهِ، وَقُبْحَ مَا اِنْطَوَى عَلَيْهِ، أَرْكَسْتَهُ لِأُمِّ رَأْسِهِ فِي زُبْيَتِهِ، وَرَدَدْتَهُ فِي مَهْوَى حُفْرَتِهِ،

Wayanẓurunī ʿalā shiddati al-ḥanaqi, falammā raʾayta yā ilāhī tabārakta wataʿālayta daghala sarīratihi, waqubḥa mā inṭawā ʿalayhi, arkastahu liʾummi raʾsihi fī zubyatihi, waradadtahu fī mahwā ḥufratihi,

and watching me with fierce resentment. When You saw the corruption of his hidden thoughts, my God—blessed and exalted are You—and the ugliness he harboured within, You cast him headfirst into his own pit and sent him tumbling into the hollow he had dug.

فَاِنْقَمَعَ بَعْدَ اِسْتِطَالَتِهِ ذَلِيلًا فِي رِبَقِ حِبَالَتِهِ الَّتِي كَانَ يُقَدِّرُ أَنْ يَرَانِي فِيهَا، وَقَدْ كَادَ أَنْ يَحُلَّ بِي لَوْلَا رَحْمَتُكَ مَا حَلَّ بِسَاحَتِهِ.

Fa-inqamaʿa baʿda istiṭālatihi dhalīlan fī ribaqi ḥibālatihi al-latī kāna yuqaddiru an yarānī fīhā, waqad kāda an yaḥulla bī lawlā raḥmatuka mā ḥalla bisāḥatihi.

After his arrogance, he was subdued and humiliated in the coils of his own snare, in which he had expected to see me. But for Your mercy, what befell him would almost have befallen me.

وَكَمْ مِنْ حَاسِدٍ قَدْ شَرِقَ بِي بِغُصَّتِهِ، وَشَجِيَ مِنِّي بِغَيْظِهِ، وَسَلَقَنِي بِحَدِّ لِسَانِهِ، وَوَحَرَنِي بِقَرْفِ عُيُوبِهِ، وَجَعَلَ عِرْضِي غَرَضًا لِمَرَامِيهِ، وَقَلَّدَنِي خِلَالًا لَمْ تَزَلْ فِيهِ، وَوَحَرَنِي بِكَيْدِهِ،

Wakam min ḥāsidin qad shariqa bī bighuṣṣatihi, washajiya minnī bighayẓihi, wasalaqanī biḥaddi lisānihi, wawaḥaranī biqarfi ʿuyūbihi, wajaʿala ʿirḍī gharaḍan limarāmīhi, waqalladanī khilālan lam tazal fīhi, wawaḥaranī bikaydihi,

How many an envious person choked on his resentment of me, suffered from his rage against me, lashed me with his sharp tongue, and stung me by charging me with his own faults! He made my honour a target for his shots, hung upon me traits that had always been his, harassed me with his deceit,

وَقَصَدَنِي بِمَكِيدَتِهِ، فَنَادَيْتُكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي مُسْتَغِيثًا بِكَ، وَاثِقًا بِسُرْعَةِ إِجَابَتِكَ، عَالِمًا أَنَّهُ لَا يُضْطَهَدُ مَنْ أَوَى إِلَى ظِلِّ كَنَفِكَ، وَلَا يَفْزَعُ مَنْ لَجَأَ إِلَى مَعْقِلِ اِنْتِصَارِكَ،

Waqaṣadanī bimakīdatihi, fanādaytuka yā ilāhī mustaghīthan bika, wāthiqan bisurʿati ijābatika, ʿāliman annahu lā yuḍṭahadu man awā ilā ẓilli kanafika, walā yafzaʿu man lajaʾa ilā maʿqili intiṣārika,

and directed his scheme against me. Then I called to You, my God, seeking Your rescue, confident of Your swift response, knowing that no one sheltered beneath Your protection is crushed, and no one who takes refuge in the stronghold of Your help need be afraid.

فَحَصَّنْتَنِي مِنْ بَأْسِهِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ.

Faḥaṣṣantanī min baʾsihi biqudratika.

Through Your power, You fortified me against his violence.

وَكَمْ مِنْ سَحَائِبِ مَكْرُوهٍ جَلَّيْتَهَا عَنِّي، وَسَحَائِبِ نِعَمٍ أَمْطَرْتَهَا عَلَيَّ، وَجَدَاوِلِ رَحْمَةٍ نَشَرْتَهَا، وَعَافِيَةٍ أَلْبَسْتَهَا، وَأَعْيُنِ أَحْدَاثٍ طَمَسْتَهَا، وَغَوَاشِي كُرُبَاتٍ كَشَفْتَهَا، وَكَمْ مِنْ ظَنٍّ حَسَنٍ حَقَّقْتَ،

Wakam min saḥāʾibi makrūhin jallaytahā ʿannī, wasaḥāʾibi niʿamin amṭartahā ʿalayya, wajadāwili raḥmatin nashartahā, waʿāfiyatin albastahā, wa-aʿyuni aḥdāthin ṭamastahā, waghawāshī kurubātin kashaftahā, wakam min ẓannin ḥasanin ḥaqqaqta,

How many clouds of hardship You have cleared away from me, clouds of blessings You have showered upon me, streams of mercy You have spread, and garments of well-being You have clothed me in! How many sources of calamity You have extinguished, shrouds of distress You have lifted, and good expectations You have fulfilled!

وَعَدَمٍ جَبَرْتَ، وَصَرْعَةٍ أَنْعَشْتَ وَمَسْكَنَةٍ حَوَّلْتَ، كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ إِنْعَامًا وَتَطَوُّلًا مِنْكَ، وَفِي جَمِيعِهِ اِنْهِمَاكًا مِنِّي عَلَى مَعَاصِيكَ، لَمْ تَمْنَعْكَ إِسَاءَتِي عَنْ إِتْمَامِ إِحْسَانِكَ،

Waʿadamin jabarta, waṣarʿatin anʿashta wamaskanatin ḥawwalta, kullu dhālika inʿāman wataṭawwulan minka, wafī jamīʿihi inhimākan minnī ʿalā maʿāṣīka, lam tamnaʿka isāʾatī ʿan itmāmi iḥsānika,

How much destitution You have remedied, how many falls You have raised me from, and how much misery You have changed! All this was Your gift and gracious bounty, while throughout it I remained absorbed in disobeying You. My wrongdoing did not prevent You from completing Your kindness,

وَلَا حَجَرَنِي ذَٰلِكَ عَنِ اِرْتِكَابِ مَسَاخِطِكَ، لَا تُسْأَلُ عَمَّا تَفْعَلُ، وَلَقَدْ سُئِلْتَ فَأَعْطَيْتَ، وَلَمْ تُسْأَلْ فَاِبْتَدَأْتَ، وَاِسْتُمِيحَ فَضْلُكَ فَمَا أَكْدَيْتَ،

Walā ḥajaranī dhālika ʿani irtikābi masākhiṭika, lā tusʾalu ʿammā tafʿalu, walaqad suʾilta fa-aʿṭayta, walam tusʾal fa-ibtadaʾta, wa-istumīḥa faḍluka famā akdayta,

nor did that kindness restrain me from committing what angers You. You are not questioned about what You do. When asked, You gave; when not asked, You took the initiative. When Your bounty was sought, You did not withhold it.

أَبَيْتَ يَا مَوْلَايَ إِلَّا إِحْسَانًا وَاِمْتِنَانًا وَتَطَوُّلًا وَإِنْعَامًا، وَأَبَيْتُ إِلَّا تَقَحُّمًا لِحُرُمَاتِكَ، وَتَعَدِّيًا لِحُدُودِكَ، وَغَفْلَةً عَنْ وَعِيدِكَ.

Abayta yā mawlāya illā iḥsānan wa-imtinānan wataṭawwulan wa-inʿāman, wa-abaytu illā taqaḥḥuman liḥurumātika, wataʿaddiyan liḥudūdika, waghaflatan ʿan waʿīdika.

My Master, You insisted on nothing but kindness, gracious giving, generosity and blessing; I insisted on nothing but violating what You made sacred, crossing Your limits and disregarding Your warning.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ إِلَٰهِي مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لَا يُغْلَبُ، وَذِي أَنَاةٍ لَا تَعْجَلُ.

Falaka al-ḥamdu ilāhī min muqtadirin lā yughlabu, wadhī anātin lā taʿjalu.

To You belongs praise, my God: One mighty beyond defeat, One patient and never hasty.

هَٰذَا مَقَامُ مَنِ اِعْتَرَفَ بِسُبُوغِ النِّعَمِ، وَقَابَلَهَا بِالتَّقْصِيرِ، وَشَهِدَ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِالتَّضْيِيعِ.

Hādhā maqāmu mani iʿtarafa bisubūghi al-niʿami, waqābalahā bi-al-taqṣīri, washahida ʿalā nafsihi bi-al-taḍyīʿi.

Here stands someone who acknowledges the abundance of Your blessings but has met them with failure, and who testifies against himself that he has squandered them.

اللَّٰهُمَّ فَإِنِّي أَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيْكَ بِالْمُحَمَّدِيَّةِ الرَّفِيعَةِ، وَالْعَلَوِيَّةِ الْبَيْضَاءِ، وَأَتَوَجَّهُ إِلَيْكَ بِهِمَا، تُعِيذَنِي مِنْ شَرِّ [كَذَا وَكَذَا] فَإِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ لَا يَضِيقُ عَلَيْكَ فِي وُجْدِكَ، وَلَا يَتَكَأَّدُكَ فِي قُدْرَتِكَ،

Allāhumma fa-innī ataqarrabu ilayka bi-al-muḥammadiyyati al-rafīʿati, wa-al-ʿalawiyyati al-bayḍāʾi, wa-atawajjahu ilayka bihimā, tuʿīdhanī min sharri [kadhā wakadhā] fa-inna dhālika lā yaḍīqu ʿalayka fī wujdika, walā yatakaʾʾaduka fī qudratika,

O God, I draw near to You through Muhammad’s exalted dignity and ʿAlī’s radiant dignity, and through them both I turn to You, that You may shelter me from the evil of [such-and-such]. This does not strain Your abundance or tax Your power.

وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ، فَهَبْ لِي يَا إِلَٰهِي مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ وَدَوَامِ تَوْفِيقِكَ، مَا أَتَّخِذُهُ سُلَّمًا أَعْرُجُ بِهِ إِلَى رِضْوَانِكَ، وَآمَنُ بِهِ مِنْ عِقَابِكَ، يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun, fahab lī yā ilāhī min raḥmatika wadawāmi tawfīqika, mā attakhidhuhu sullaman aʿruju bihi ilā riḍwānika, wa-āmanu bihi min ʿiqābika, yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

You have power over all things. Grant me, my God, such mercy and lasting help to do what is right that I may make them a ladder by which to rise to Your good pleasure and find safety from Your punishment, most merciful of those who show mercy.

الدُّعَاءُ ٥٠

Al-duʿāʾu 50

Prayer 50

فِي الرَّهْبَةِ

Fī al-rahbati

In fear

اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنَّكَ خَلَقْتَنِي سَوِيّاً، وَرَبَّيْتَنِي صَغِيرًا، وَرَزَقْتَنِي مَكْفِيّاً.

Allāhumma innaka khalaqtanī sawiyyan, warabbaytanī ṣaghīran, warazaqtanī makfiyyan.

O God, You created me sound in form, nurtured me when I was small, and provided for me so that my needs were met.

اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي وَجَدْتُ فِيمَا أَنْزَلْتَ مِنْ كِتَابِكَ، وَبَشَّرْتَ بِهِ عِبَادَكَ،

Allāhumma innī wajadtu fīmā anzalta min kitābika, wabashsharta bihi ʿibādaka,

O God, in the Book You sent down, with which You brought good news to Your servants, I found these words of Yours:

أَنْ قُلْتَ: (يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّٰهِ إِنَّ اللَّٰهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا) وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمَ مِنِّي مَا قَدْ عَلِمْتَ،

An qulta: (yā ʿibādiya al-ladhīna asrafū ʿalā anfusihim lā taqnaṭū min raḥmati Allāhi inna Allāha yaghfiru al-dhunūba jamīʿan) waqad taqaddama minnī mā qad ʿalimta,

“O My servants who have gone to excess against themselves, do not despair of God’s mercy. God forgives all sins.” Already I have committed what You know,

وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، فَيَا سَوْأَتَا مِمَّا أَحْصَاهُ عَلَيَّ كِتَابُكَ، فَلَوْلَا الْمَوَاقِفُ الَّتِي أُؤَمِّلُ مِنْ عَفْوِكَ الَّذِي شَمِلَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ لَأَلْقَيْتُ بِيَدِي،

Wamā anta aʿlamu bihi minnī, fayā sawʾatā mimmā aḥṣāhu ʿalayya kitābuka, falawlā al-mawāqifu al-latī uʾammilu min ʿafwika al-ladhī shamila kulla shayʾin laʾalqaytu biyadī,

and what You know better than I do. How ashamed I am of what Your record has counted against me! Were it not for the occasions on which I hope for Your pardon, which embraces everything, I would surrender in despair.

وَلَوْ أَنَّ أَحَدًا اِسْتَطَاعَ الْهَرَبَ مِنْ رَبِّهِ لَكُنْتُ أَنَا أَحَقَّ بِالْهَرَبِ، وَأَنْتَ لَا تَخْفَى عَلَيْكَ خَافِيَةٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ إِلَّا أَتَيْتَ بِهَا، وَكَفَى بِكَ جَازِيًا،

Walaw anna aḥadan istaṭāʿa al-haraba min rabbihi lakuntu anā aḥaqqa bi-al-harabi, wa-anta lā takhfā ʿalayka khāfiyatun fī al-arḍi walā fī al-samāʾi illā atayta bihā, wakafā bika jāziyan,

If anyone could run away from his Lord, I would have the strongest reason to run. But nothing hidden on earth or in heaven escapes You: You bring it forth. You alone suffice to repay each deed,

وَكَفَى بِكَ حَسِيبًا.

Wakafā bika ḥasīban.

and You alone suffice to take account.

اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنَّكَ طَالِبِي إِنْ أَنَا هَرَبْتُ، وَمُدْرِكِي إِنْ أَنَا فَرَرْتُ، فَهَا أَنَا ذَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ خَاضِعٌ ذَلِيلٌ رَاغِمٌ، إِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي فَإِنِّي لِذَٰلِكَ أَهْلٌ،

Allāhumma innaka ṭālibī in anā harabtu, wamudrikī in anā farartu, fahā anā dhā bayna yadayka khāḍiʿun dhalīlun rāghimun, in tuʿadhdhibnī fa-innī lidhālika ahlun,

O God, You will seek me out if I run, and overtake me if I flee. Here I am before You, submissive, humbled and brought low. If You punish me, I deserve it,

وَهُوَ يَا رَبِّ مِنْكَ عَدْلٌ، وَإِنْ تَعْفُ عَنِّي فَقَدِيمًا شَمَلَنِي عَفْوُكَ، وَأَلْبَسْتَنِي عَافِيَتَكَ.

Wahuwa yā rabbi minka ʿadlun, wa-in taʿfu ʿannī faqadīman shamalanī ʿafwuka, wa-albastanī ʿāfiyataka.

and it is justice from You, my Lord. If You pardon me, Your pardon has long embraced me, and You have clothed me in Your well-being.

فَأَسْأَلُكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ بِالْمَخْزُونِ مِنْ أَسْمَائِكَ، وَبِمَا وَارَتْهُ الْحُجُبُ مِنْ بَهَائِكَ، إِلَّا رَحِمْتَ هَٰذِهِ النَّفْسَ الْجَزُوعَةَ، وَهَٰذِهِ الرِّمَّةَ الْهَلُوعَةَ، الَّتِي لَا تَسْتَطِيعُ حَرَّ شَمْسِكَ، فَكَيْفَ تَسْتَطِيعُ حَرَّ نَارِكَ؟

Fa-asʾaluka Allāhumma bi-al-makhzūni min asmāʾika, wabimā wārat-hu al-ḥujubu min bahāʾika, illā raḥimta hādhihi al-nafsa al-jazūʿata, wahādhihi al-rimmata al-halūʿata, al-latī lā tastaṭīʿu ḥarra shamsika, fakayfa tastaṭīʿu ḥarra nārika?

O God, I ask You by Your names held in reserve, and by the splendour of Yours that the veils conceal: have mercy on this anxious soul and this frail, fearful frame. It cannot endure the heat of Your sun; how could it endure the heat of Your fire?

وَالَّتِي لَا تَسْتَطِيعُ صَوْتَ رَعْدِكَ، فَكَيْفَ تَسْتَطِيعُ صَوْتَ غَضَبِكَ؟

Wa-al-latī lā tastaṭīʿu ṣawta raʿdika, fakayfa tastaṭīʿu ṣawta ghaḍabika?

It cannot endure the sound of Your thunder; how could it endure the sound of Your anger?

فَاِرْحَمْنِيَ اللَّٰهُمَّ فَإِنِّي اِمْرُؤٌ حَقِيرٌ، وَخَطَرِي يَسِيرٌ، وَلَيْسَ عَذَابِي مِمَّا يَزِيدُ فِي مُلْكِكَ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ، وَلَوْ أَنَّ عَذَابِي مِمَّا يَزِيدُ فِي مُلْكِكَ لَسَأَلْتُكَ الصَّبْرَ عَلَيْهِ،

Fa-irḥamniya Allāhumma fa-innī imruʾun ḥaqīrun, wakhaṭarī yasīrun, walaysa ʿadhābī mimmā yazīdu fī mulkika mithqāla dharratin, walaw anna ʿadhābī mimmā yazīdu fī mulkika lasaʾaltuka al-ṣabra ʿalayhi,

Have mercy on me, O God. I am an insignificant person, of little consequence. Punishing me would not add an atom’s weight to Your sovereignty. If punishing me could add to Your sovereignty, I would ask You for patience to bear it,

وَأَحْبَبْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لَكَ، وَلَكِنْ سُلْطَانُكَ اللَّٰهُمَّ أَعْظَمُ، وَمُلْكُكَ أَدْوَمُ مِنْ أَنْ تَزِيدَ فِيهِ طَاعَةُ الْمُطِيعِينَ، أَوْ تَنْقُصَ مِنْهُ مَعْصِيَةُ الْمُذْنِبِينَ.

Wa-aḥbabtu an yakūna dhālika laka, walakin sulṭānuka Allāhumma aʿẓamu, wamulkuka adwamu min an tazīda fīhi ṭāʿatu al-muṭīʿīna, aw tanquṣa minhu maʿṣiyatu al-mudhnibīna.

and would wish that increase for You. But Your authority, O God, is too great, and Your sovereignty too enduring, for the obedience of the obedient to add to it or the disobedience of sinners to diminish it.

فَاِرْحَمْنِي يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ، وَتَجَاوَزْ عَنِّي يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ، وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحِيمُ.

Fa-irḥamnī yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna, watajāwaz ʿannī yā dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi, watub ʿalayya innaka anta al-tawwābu al-raḥīmu.

Have mercy on me, most merciful of those who show mercy. Overlook my faults, Possessor of majesty and honour. Turn to me in acceptance: You are the One who repeatedly accepts repentance, the Merciful.

الدُّعَاءُ ٥١

Al-duʿāʾu 51

Prayer 51

فِي التَّضَرُّعِ وَالِاسْتِكَانَةِ

Fī al-taḍarruʿi wa-al-istikānati

In humble pleading and submission

إِلَٰهِي أَحْمَدُكَ وَأَنْتَ لِلْحَمْدِ أَهْلٌ عَلَى حُسْنِ صَنِيعِكَ إِلَيَّ، وَسُبُوغِ نَعْمَائِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَجَزِيلِ عَطَائِكَ عِنْدِي، وَعَلَى مَا فَضَّلْتَنِي مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ، وَأَسْبَغْتَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ نِعْمَتِكَ،

Ilāhī aḥmaduka wa-anta li-l-ḥamdi ahlun ʿalā ḥusni ṣanīʿika ilayya, wasubūghi naʿmāʾika ʿalayya, wajazīli ʿaṭāʾika ʿindī, waʿalā mā faḍḍaltanī min raḥmatika, wa-asbaghta ʿalayya min niʿmatika,

My God, I praise You—and You are worthy of praise—for Your beautiful care of me, the abundance of Your blessings upon me, the richness of Your gifts to me, the mercy with which You have favoured me, and the blessings You have poured over me.

فَقَدِ اِصْطَنَعْتَ عِنْدِي مَا يَعْجِزُ عَنْهُ شُكْرِي، وَلَوْلَا إِحْسَانُكَ إِلَيَّ وَسُبُوغُ نَعْمَائِكَ عَلَيَّ مَا بَلَغْتُ إِحْرَازَ حَظِّي، وَلَا إِصْلَاحَ نَفْسِي، وَلَكِنَّكَ اِبْتَدَأْتَنِي بِالْإِحْسَانِ،

Faqadi iṣṭanaʿta ʿindī mā yaʿjizu ʿanhu shukrī, walawlā iḥsānuka ilayya wasubūghu naʿmāʾika ʿalayya mā balaghtu iḥrāza ḥaẓẓī, walā iṣlāḥa nafsī, walakinnaka ibtadaʾtanī bi-al-iḥsāni,

What You have done for me is beyond my power to thank You for. Without Your kindness to me and Your abundant blessings upon me, I could not have secured my share of good or set myself right. But You took the initiative in kindness toward me,

وَرَزَقْتَنِي فِي أُمُورِي كُلِّهَا الْكِفَايَةَ، وَصَرَفْتَ عَنِّي جَهْدَ الْبَلَاءِ، وَمَنَعْتَ مِنِّي مَحْذُورَ الْقَضَاءِ إِلَٰهِي فَكَمْ مِنْ بَلَاءٍ جَاهِدٍ قَدْ صَرَفْتَ عَنِّي،

Warazaqtanī fī umūrī kullihā al-kifāyata, waṣarafta ʿannī jahda al-balāʾi, wamanaʿta minnī maḥdhūra al-qaḍāʾi ilāhī fakam min balāʾin jāhidin qad ṣarafta ʿannī,

provided enough for me in all my affairs, turned the hardship of affliction away from me, and shielded me from what I feared in Your decree. My God, how many exhausting trials You have turned away from me!

وَكَمْ مِنْ نِعْمَةٍ سَابِغَةٍ أَقْرَرْتَ بِهَا عَيْنِي، وَكَمْ مِنْ صَنِيعَةٍ كَرِيمَةٍ لَكَ عِنْدِي.

Wakam min niʿmatin sābighatin aqrarta bihā ʿaynī, wakam min ṣanīʿatin karīmatin laka ʿindī.

How many abundant blessings You have made a joy to my eyes! How many acts of generous care You have shown me!

أَنْتَ الَّذِي أَجَبْتَ عِنْدَ الِاضْطِرَارِ دَعْوَتِي، وَأَقَلْتَ عِنْدَ الْعِثَارِ زَلَّتِي، وَأَخَذْتَ لِي مِنَ الْأَعْدَاءِ بِظُلَامَتِي.

Anta al-ladhī ajabta ʿinda al-iḍṭirāri daʿwatī, wa-aqalta ʿinda al-ʿithāri zallatī, wa-akhadhta lī mina al-aʿdāʾi biẓulāmatī.

You answered my call in desperate need, overlooked my lapse when I stumbled, and obtained redress for me from my enemies for the wrong they did me.

إِلَٰهِي مَا وَجَدْتُكَ بَخِيلًا حِينَ سَأَلْتُكَ، وَلَا مُنْقَبِضًا حِينَ أَرَدْتُكَ، بَلْ وَجَدْتُكَ لِدُعَائِي سَامِعًا، وَلِمَطَالِبِي مُعْطِيًا، وَوَجَدْتُ نُعْمَاكَ عَلَيَّ سَابِغَةً، فِي كُلِّ شَأْنٍ مِنْ شَأْنِي،

Ilāhī mā wajadtuka bakhīlan ḥīna saʾaltuka, walā munqabiḍan ḥīna aradtuka, bal wajadtuka liduʿāʾī sāmiʿan, walimaṭālibī muʿṭiyan, wawajadtu nuʿmāka ʿalayya sābighatan, fī kulli shaʾnin min shaʾnī,

My God, I did not find You ungenerous when I asked, or withdrawn when I sought You. Instead, I found You listening to my prayer and granting what I sought. I found Your blessings upon me abundant in every affair of mine

وَكُلِّ زَمَانٍ مِنْ زَمَانِي، فَأَنْتَ عِنْدِي مَحْمُودٌ، وَصَنِيعُكَ لَدَيَّ مَبْرُورٌ، تَحْمَدُكَ نَفْسِي وَلِسَانِي وَعَقْلِي حَمْدًا يَبْلُغُ الْوَفَاءَ وَحَقِيقَةَ الشُّكْرِ، حَمْدًا يَكُونُ مَبْلَغَ رِضَاكَ عَنِّي،

Wakulli zamānin min zamānī, fa-anta ʿindī maḥmūdun, waṣanīʿuka ladayya mabrūrun, taḥmaduka nafsī walisānī waʿaqlī ḥamdan yablughu al-wafāʾa waḥaqīqata al-shukri, ḥamdan yakūnu mablagha riḍāka ʿannī,

and at every moment of my life. To me You are praiseworthy, and Your care is kindness indeed. My soul, tongue and mind praise You with praise that meets the full obligation and reality of gratitude, praise that reaches the measure of Your pleasure with me.

فَنَجِّنِي مِنْ سُخْطِكَ يَا كَهْفِي حِينَ تُعْيِينِي الْمَذَاهِبُ، وَيَا مُقِيلِي عَثْرَتِي، فَلَوْلَا سَتْرُكَ عَوْرَتِي لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمَفْضُوحِينَ، وَيَا مُؤَيِّدِي بِالنَّصْرِ، فَلَوْلَا نَصْرُكَ إِيَّايَ لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمَغْلُوبِينَ،

Fanajjinī min sukhṭika yā kahfī ḥīna tuʿyīnī al-madhāhibu, wayā muqīlī ʿathratī, falawlā satruka ʿawratī lakuntu mina al-mafḍūḥīna, wayā muʾayyidī bi-al-naṣri, falawlā naṣruka iyyāya lakuntu mina al-maghlūbīna,

Save me from Your displeasure, my refuge when every path leaves me helpless, You who overlook my stumble! Without Your concealment of my shame, I would be exposed. O You who strengthen me with help! Without Your help, I would be defeated.

وَيَا مَنْ وَضَعَتْ لَهُ الْمُلُوكُ نِيرَ الْمَذَلَّةِ عَلَى أَعْنَاقِهَا، فَهُمْ مِنْ سَطَوَاتِهِ خَائِفُونَ، وَيَا أَهْلَ التَّقْوَى، وَيَا مَنْ لَهُ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى أَسْأَلُكَ أَنْ تَعْفُوَ عَنِّي،

Wayā man waḍaʿat lahu al-mulūku nīra al-madhallati ʿalā aʿnāqihā, fahum min saṭawātihi khāʾifūna, wayā ahla al-taqwā, wayā man lahu al-asmāʾu al-ḥusnā asʾaluka an taʿfuwa ʿannī,

O You before whom kings have placed the yoke of lowliness upon their necks, fearing Your mighty blows! O You who deserve reverent fear, You to whom belong the most beautiful names! I ask You to pardon me

وَتَغْفِرَ لِي فَلَسْتُ بَرِيئًا فَأَعْتَذِرَ، وَلَا بِذِي قُوَّةٍ فَأَنْتَصِرَ، وَلَا مَفَرَّ لِي فَأَفِرَّ.

Wataghfira lī falastu barīʾan fa-aʿtadhira, walā bidhī quwwatin fa-antaṣira, walā mafarra lī fa-afirra.

and forgive me. I am not innocent, so I cannot offer a defence; I have no strength with which to prevail; I have nowhere to flee.

وَأَسْتَقِيلُكَ عَثَرَاتِي، وَأَتَنَصَّلُ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِيَ الَّتِي قَدْ أَوْبَقَتْنِي، وَأَحَاطَتْ بِي فَأَهْلَكَتْنِي، مِنْهَا فَرَرْتُ إِلَيْكَ رَبِّ تَائِبًا، فَتُبْ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَوِّذًا، فَأَعِذْنِي مُسْتَجِيرًا، فَلَا تَخْذُلْنِي سَائِلًا،

Wa-astaqīluka ʿatharātī, wa-atanaṣṣalu ilayka min dhunūbiya al-latī qad awbaqatnī, wa-aḥāṭat bī fa-ahlakatnī, minhā farartu ilayka rabbi tāʾiban, fatub ʿalayya mutaʿawwidhan, fa-aʿidhnī mustajīran, falā takhdhulnī sāʾilan,

I ask You to overlook my stumbles, and I renounce before You the sins that have ruined me, surrounded me and brought me to destruction. From them I have fled to You, my Lord, repentant—so accept my repentance; seeking refuge—so shelter me; seeking protection—so do not forsake me; asking—

فَلَا تَحْرِمْنِي مُعْتَصِمًا، فَلَا تُسْلِمْنِي دَاعِيًا، فَلَا تَرُدَّنِي خَائِبًا، دَعَوْتُكَ يَا رَبِّ مِسْكِينًا، مُسْتَكِينًا، مُشْفِقًا، خَائِفًا، وَجِلًا، فَقِيرًا، مُضْطَرّاً،

Falā taḥrimnī muʿtaṣiman, falā tuslimnī dāʿiyan, falā taruddanī khāʾiban, daʿawtuka yā rabbi miskīnan, mustakīnan, mushfiqan, khāʾifan, wajilan, faqīran, muḍṭarran,

so do not deprive me; holding fast—so do not abandon me; calling upon You—so do not send me back disappointed. I call upon You, my Lord, poor, submissive, anxious, fearful, trembling, needy and desperate

إِلَيْكَ أَشْكُو إِلَيْكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي ضَعْفَ نَفْسِي عَنِ الْمُسَارَعَةِ فِيمَا وَعَدْتَهُ أَوْلِيَاءَكَ، وَالْمُجَانَبَةِ عَمَّا حَذَّرْتَهُ أَعْدَاءَكَ، وَكَثْرَةَ هُمُومِي وَوَسْوَسَةَ نَفْسِي.

Ilayka ashkū ilayka yā ilāhī ḍaʿfa nafsī ʿani al-musāraʿati fīmā waʿadtahu awliyāʾaka, wa-al-mujānabati ʿammā ḥadhdhartahu aʿdāʾaka, wakathrata humūmī wawaswasata nafsī.

for You. To You I complain, my God, of my soul’s weakness in hastening toward what You promised Your friends and avoiding what You warned Your enemies against, of my many worries and the whisperings within me.

إِلَٰهِي لَمْ تَفْضَحْنِي بِسَرِيرَتِي، وَلَمْ تُهْلِكْنِي بِجَرِيرَتِي، أَدْعُوكَ فَتُجِيبُنِي وَإِنْ كُنْتُ بَطِيئًا حِينَ تَدْعُونِي.

Ilāhī lam tafḍaḥnī bisarīratī, walam tuhliknī bijarīratī, adʿūka fatujībunī wa-in kuntu baṭīʾan ḥīna tadʿūnī.

My God, You have not exposed me for my hidden thoughts or destroyed me for my offence. I call upon You and You answer, though I am slow when You call me.

وَأَسْأَلُكَ كُلَّمَا شِئْتُ مِنْ حَوَائِجِي، وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنْتُ وَضَعْتُ عِنْدَكَ سِرِّي، فَلَا أَدْعُو سِوَاكَ، وَلَا أَرْجُو غَيْرَكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَبَّيْكَ، تَسْمَعُ مَنْ شَكَا إِلَيْكَ، وَتَلْقَى مَنْ تَوَكَّلَ عَلَيْكَ،

Wa-asʾaluka kullamā shiʾtu min ḥawāʾijī, waḥaythu mā kuntu waḍaʿtu ʿindaka sirrī, falā adʿū siwāka, walā arjū ghayraka, labbayka labbayka, tasmaʿu man shakā ilayka, watalqā man tawakkala ʿalayka,

Whenever I wish, I ask You for my needs; wherever I am, I entrust my secrets to You. I call on no one but You and hope in no one else. Here I am, here I am! You hear those who complain to You, welcome those who rely on You,

وَتُخَلِّصُ مَنِ اِعْتَصَمَ بِكَ، وَتُفَرِّجُ عَمَّنْ لَاذَ بِكَ.

Watukhalliṣu mani iʿtaṣama bika, watufarriju ʿamman lādha bika.

rescue those who hold fast to You, and relieve those who seek Your shelter.

إِلَٰهِي فَلَا تَحْرِمْنِي خَيْرَ الْآخِرَةِ وَالْأُولَى لِقِلَّةِ شُكْرِي، وَاِغْفِرْ لِي مَا تَعْلَمُ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي، إِنْ تُعَذِّبْ فَأَنَا الظَّالِمُ، الْمُفَرِّطُ، الْمُضَيِّعُ، الْآثِمُ، الْمُقَصِّرُ، الْمُضَجِّعُ، الْمُغْفِلُ حَظَّ نَفْسِي،

Ilāhī falā taḥrimnī khayra al-ākhirati wa-al-ūlā liqillati shukrī, wa-ighfir lī mā taʿlamu min dhunūbī, in tuʿadhdhib fa-anā al-ẓālimu, al-mufarriṭu, al-muḍayyiʿu, al-āthimu, al-muqaṣṣiru, al-muḍajjiʿu, al-mughfilu ḥaẓẓa nafsī,

My God, do not deny me the good of the next life and this life because my gratitude is so slight. Forgive the sins of mine that You know. If You punish, I am the wrongdoer: negligent, wasteful, sinful, falling short, slack and heedless of my own good.

وَإِنْ تَغْفِرْ فَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Wa-in taghfir fa-anta arḥamu al-rāḥimīna.

If You forgive, You are the most merciful of those who show mercy.

فِي الْإِلْحَاحِ

Fī al-ilḥāḥi

In persistent supplication

يَا اللَّٰهُ الَّذِي لَا يَخْفَى عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ، وَكَيْفَ يَخْفَى عَلَيْكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي مَا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَهُ؟

Yā Allāhu al-ladhī lā yakhfā ʿalayhi shayʾun fī al-arḍi walā fī al-samāʾi, wakayfa yakhfā ʿalayka yā ilāhī mā anta khalaqtahu?

O God, from whom nothing on earth or in heaven is hidden! How could what You created be hidden from You, my God?

وَكَيْفَ لَا تُحْصِي مَا أَنْتَ صَنَعْتَهُ؟

Wakayfa lā tuḥṣī mā anta ṣanaʿtahu?

How could You fail to take account of what You made?

أَوْ كَيْفَ يَغِيبُ عَنْكَ مَا أَنْتَ تُدَبِّرُهُ؟

Aw kayfa yaghību ʿanka mā anta tudabbiruhu?

How could what You govern be absent from Your knowledge?

أَوْ كَيْفَ يَسْتَطِيعُ أَنْ يَهْرُبَ مِنْكَ مَنْ لَا حَيَاةَ لَهُ إِلَّا بِرِزْقِكَ؟

Aw kayfa yastaṭīʿu an yahruba minka man lā ḥayāta lahu illā birizqika?

How could someone escape You when he has no life except through Your provision?

أَوْ كَيْفَ يَنْجُو مِنْكَ مَنْ لَا مَذْهَبَ لَهُ فِي غَيْرِ مُلْكِكَ؟

Aw kayfa yanjū minka man lā madhhaba lahu fī ghayri mulkika?

How could someone evade You when he has nowhere to go outside Your sovereignty?

سُبْحَانَكَ!

Subḥānaka!

Glory be to You!

أَخْشَى خَلْقِكَ لَكَ أَعْلَمُهُمْ بِكَ، وَأَخْضَعُهُمْ لَكَ أَعْمَلُهُمْ بِطَاعَتِكَ، وَأَهْوَنُهُمْ عَلَيْكَ مَنْ أَنْتَ تَرْزُقُهُ وَهُوَ يَعْبُدُ غَيْرَكَ، سُبْحَانَكَ!

Akhshā khalqika laka aʿlamuhum bika, wa-akhḍaʿuhum laka aʿmaluhum biṭāʿatika, wa-ahwanuhum ʿalayka man anta tarzuquhu wahuwa yaʿbudu ghayraka, subḥānaka!

Those of Your creatures who fear You most know You best; those most submissive to You act most obediently toward You. Least esteemed by You is someone whom You provide for while he worships another. Glory be to You!

لَا يَنْقُصُ سُلْطَانَكَ مَنْ أَشْرَكَ بِكَ، وَكَذَّبَ رُسُلَكَ، وَلَيْسَ يَسْتَطِيعُ مَنْ كَرِهَ قَضَاءَكَ أَنْ يَرُدَّ أَمْرَكَ، وَلَا يَمْتَنِعُ مِنْكَ مَنْ كَذَّبَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ، وَلَا يَفُوتُكَ مَنْ عَبَدَ غَيْرَكَ،

Lā yanquṣu sulṭānaka man ashraka bika, wakadhdhaba rusulaka, walaysa yastaṭīʿu man kariha qaḍāʾaka an yarudda amraka, walā yamtaniʿu minka man kadhdhaba biqudratika, walā yafūtuka man ʿabada ghayraka,

Those who associate others with You and deny Your messengers do not diminish Your authority. Those who resent Your decree cannot turn back Your command. Those who deny Your power cannot defend themselves against You, and those who worship another cannot escape You.

وَلَا يُعَمَّرُ فِي الدُّنْيَا مَنْ كَرِهَ لِقَاءَكَ.

Walā yuʿammaru fī al-dunyā man kariha liqāʾaka.

Those who dislike meeting You are not thereby granted longer life in this world.

سُبْحَانَكَ!

Subḥānaka!

Glory be to You!

مَا أَعْظَمَ شَأْنَكَ، وَأَقْهَرَ سُلْطَانَكَ، وَأَشَدَّ قُوَّتَكَ، وَأَنْفَذَ أَمْرَكَ!

Mā aʿẓama shaʾnaka, wa-aqhara sulṭānaka, wa-ashadda quwwataka, wa-anfadha amraka!

How great is Your majesty, how overwhelming Your authority, how mighty Your strength, how unfailingly Your command takes effect!

سُبْحَانَكَ!

Subḥānaka!

Glory be to You!

قَضَيْتَ عَلَى جَمِيعِ خَلْقِكَ الْمَوْتَ: مَنْ وَحَّدَكَ وَمَنْ كَفَرَ بِكَ، وَكُلٌّ ذَائِقُ الْمَوْتِ، وَكُلٌّ صَائِرٌ إِلَيْكَ، فَتَبَارَكْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ، لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ،

Qaḍayta ʿalā jamīʿi khalqika al-mawta: man waḥḥadaka waman kafara bika, wakullun dhāʾiqu al-mawti, wakullun ṣāʾirun ilayka, fatabārakta wataʿālayta, lā ilāha illā anta, waḥdaka lā sharīka laka,

You have decreed death for all Your creatures: those who affirm Your oneness and those who disbelieve in You. Each shall taste death, and each shall come to You. Blessed and exalted are You! There is no god but You, alone, without partner.

آمَنْتُ بِكَ، وَصَدَّقْتُ رُسُلَكَ وَقَبِلْتُ كِتَابَكَ، وَكَفَرْتُ بِكُلِّ مَعْبُودٍ غَيْرِكَ، وَبَرِئْتُ مِمَّنْ عَبَدَ سِوَاكَ.

Āmantu bika, waṣaddaqtu rusulaka waqabiltu kitābaka, wakafartu bikulli maʿbūdin ghayrika, wabariʾtu mimman ʿabada siwāka.

I believe in You, affirm Your messengers and accept Your Book. I reject every object of worship other than You and disavow those who worship anyone else.

اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أُصْبِحُ وَأُمْسِي مُسْتَقِلًّا لِعَمَلِي، مُعْتَرِفًا بِذَنْبِي، مُقِرّاً بِخَطَايَايَ، أَنَا بِإِسْرَافِي عَلَى نَفْسِي ذَلِيلٌ، عَمَلِي أَهْلَكَنِي، وَهَوَايَ أَرْدَانِي، وَشَهَوَاتِي حَرَمَتْنِي.

Allāhumma innī uṣbiḥu wa-umsī mustaqillan liʿamalī, muʿtarifan bidhanbī, muqirran bikhaṭāyāya, anā biʾisrāfī ʿalā nafsī dhalīlun, ʿamalī ahlakanī, wahawāya ardānī, washahawātī ḥaramatnī.

O God, morning and evening I regard my deeds as little, acknowledge my sin and admit my wrongs. Through my excess against myself I am humbled; my deeds have destroyed me, my desires have brought me down, and my appetites have deprived me.

فَأَسْأَلُكَ يَا مَوْلَايَ سُؤَالَ مَنْ نَفْسُهُ لَاهِيَةٌ لِطُولِ أَمَلِهِ، وَبَدَنُهُ غَافِلٌ لِسُكُونِ عُرُوقِهِ، وَقَلْبُهُ مَفْتُونٌ بِكَثْرَةِ النِّعَمِ عَلَيْهِ، وَفِكْرُهُ قَلِيلٌ لِمَا هُوَ صَائِرٌ إِلَيْهِ،

Fa-asʾaluka yā mawlāya suʾāla man nafsuhu lāhiyatun liṭūli amalihi, wabadanuhu ghāfilun lisukūni ʿurūqihi, waqalbuhu maftūnun bikathrati al-niʿami ʿalayhi, wafikruhu qalīlun limā huwa ṣāʾirun ilayhi,

So I ask You, my Master, as one whose soul is distracted by far-reaching hopes, whose body is heedless because its veins are at ease, whose heart is beguiled by the many blessings upon him, and who gives little thought to where he is heading;

سُؤَالَ مَنْ قَدْ غَلَبَ عَلَيْهِ الْأَمَلُ، وَفَتَنَهُ الْهَوَى، وَاِسْتَمْكَنَتْ مِنْهُ الدُّنْيَا، وَأَظَلَّهُ الْأَجَلُ، سُؤَالَ مَنِ اِسْتَكْثَرَ ذُنُوبَهُ، وَاِعْتَرَفَ بِخَطِيئَتِهِ، سُؤَالَ مَنْ لَا رَبَّ لَهُ غَيْرُكَ،

Suʾāla man qad ghalaba ʿalayhi al-amalu, wafatanahu al-hawā, wa-istamkanat minhu al-dunyā, wa-aẓallahu al-ajalu, suʾāla mani istakthara dhunūbahu, wa-iʿtarafa bikhaṭīʾatihi, suʾāla man lā rabba lahu ghayruka,

as one whom hopes have overpowered, desire has tempted, and the world has mastered, while death casts its shadow over him; as one who sees how many his sins are and acknowledges his offence; as one who has no Lord but You,

وَلَا وَلِيَّ لَهُ دُونَكَ، وَلَا مُنْقِذَ لَهُ مِنْكَ، وَلَا مَلْجَأَ لَهُ مِنْكَ إِلَّا إِلَيْكَ.

Walā waliyya lahu dūnaka, walā munqidha lahu minka, walā maljaʾa lahu minka illā ilayka.

no protector apart from You, no rescuer from You, and no refuge from You except in You.

إِلَٰهِي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّكَ الْوَاجِبِ عَلَى جَمِيعِ خَلْقِكَ، وَبِاسْمِكَ الْعَظِيمِ الَّذِي أَمَرْتَ رَسُولَكَ أَنْ يُسَبِّحَكَ بِهِ، وَبِجَلَالِ وَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيمِ الَّذِي لَا يَبْلَى وَلَا يَتَغَيَّرُ، وَلَا يَحُولُ وَلَا يَفْنَى،

Ilāhī asʾaluka biḥaqqika al-wājibi ʿalā jamīʿi khalqika, wabismika al-ʿaẓīmi al-ladhī amarta rasūlaka an yusabbiḥaka bihi, wabijalāli wajhika al-karīmi al-ladhī lā yablā walā yataghayyaru, walā yaḥūlu walā yafnā,

My God, I ask You by the right owed to You by all Your creatures, by Your great name with which You commanded Your messenger to glorify You, and by the majesty of Your noble face, which does not wear away or alter, change or perish,

أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَأَنْ تُغْنِيَنِي عَنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ بِعِبَادَتِكَ، وَأَنْ تُسَلِّيَ نَفْسِي عَنِ الدُّنْيَا بِمَخَافَتِكَ، وَأَنْ تُثْنِيَنِي بِالْكَثِيرِ مِنْ كَرَامَتِكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ، فَإِلَيْكَ أَفِرُّ،

An tuṣalliya ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin, wa-an tughniyanī ʿan kulli shayʾin biʿibādatika, wa-an tusalliya nafsī ʿani al-dunyā bimakhāfatika, wa-an tuthniyanī bi-al-kathīri min karāmatika biraḥmatika, fa-ilayka afirru,

to bless Muhammad and his family; to make worship of You suffice me in place of everything else; to turn my soul’s attention from this world through fear of You; and, through Your mercy, to send me back richly honoured by You. To You I flee,

وَمِنْكَ أَخَافُ، وَبِكَ أَسْتَغِيثُ، وَإِيَّاكَ أَرْجُو، وَلَكَ أَدْعُو، وَإِلَيْكَ أَلْجَأُ، وَبِكَ أَثِقُ، وَإِيَّاكَ أَسْتَعِينُ، وَبِكَ أُؤْمِنُ، وَعَلَيْكَ أَتَوَكَّلُ، وَعَلَى جُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ أَتَّكِلُ.

Waminka akhāfu, wabika astaghīthu, wa-iyyāka arjū, walaka adʿū, wa-ilayka aljaʾu, wabika athiqu, wa-iyyāka astaʿīnu, wabika uʾminu, waʿalayka atawakkalu, waʿalā jūdika wakaramika attakilu.

and You I fear. Your rescue I seek, and in You I hope. To You I pray, in You I take refuge, and in You I trust. Your help alone I ask; in You I believe, on You I rely, and upon Your generosity and bounty I depend.

فِي التَّذَلُّلِ لِلَّٰهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

Fī al-tadhalluli li-llāhi ʿazza wajalla

In humility before God, mighty and majestic

رَبِّ أَفْحَمَتْنِي ذُنُوبِي، وَاِنْقَطَعَتْ مَقَالَتِي، فَلَا حُجَّةَ لِي، فَأَنَا الْأَسِيرُ بِبَلِيَّتِي، الْمُرْتَهَنُ بِعَمَلِي، الْمُتَرَدِّدُ فِي خَطِيئَتِي، الْمُتَحَيِّرُ عَنْ قَصْدِي، الْمُنْقَطَعُ بِي، قَدْ أَوْقَفْتُ نَفْسِي مَوْقِفَ الْأَذِلَّاءِ الْمُذْنِبِينَ،

Rabbi afḥamatnī dhunūbī, wa-inqaṭaʿat maqālatī, falā ḥujjata lī, fa-anā al-asīru bibaliyyatī, al-murtahanu biʿamalī, al-mutaraddidu fī khaṭīʾatī, al-mutaḥayyiru ʿan qaṣdī, al-munqaṭaʿu bī, qad awqaftu nafsī mawqifa al-adhillāʾi al-mudhnibīna,

My Lord, my sins have silenced me; my words have run out, and I have no defence. I am captive to my affliction, held in pledge for my deeds, wavering in my sin, confused about my course and stranded. I have placed myself where humbled sinners stand,

مَوْقِفَ الْأَشْقِيَاءِ الْمُتَجَرِّينَ عَلَيْكَ، الْمُسْتَخِفِّينَ بِوَعْدِكَ.

Mawqifa al-ashqiyāʾi al-mutajarrīna ʿalayka, al-mustakhiffīna biwaʿdika.

where the wretched stand, those who dare to defy You and treat Your promise lightly.

سُبْحَانَكَ!

Subḥānaka!

Glory be to You!

أَيَّ جُرْأَةٍ اِجْتَرَأْتُ عَلَيْكَ؟

Ayya jurʾatin ijtaraʾtu ʿalayka?

What audacity I have shown toward You!

وَأَيَّ تَغْرِيرٍ غَرَّرْتُ بِنَفْسِي مَوْلَايَ اِرْحَمْ كَبْوَتِي لِحُرِّ وَجْهِي، وَزَلَّةَ قَدَمِي، وَعُدْ بِحِلْمِكَ عَلَى جَهْلِي، وَبِإِحْسَانِكَ عَلَى إِسَاءَتِي، فَأَنَا الْمُقِرُّ بِذَنْبِي، الْمُعْتَرِفُ بِخَطِيئَتِي، وَهَٰذِهِ يَدِي وَنَاصِيَتِي،

Wa-ayya taghrīrin gharrartu binafsī mawlāya irḥam kabwatī liḥurri wajhī, wazallata qadamī, waʿud biḥilmika ʿalā jahlī, wabiʾiḥsānika ʿalā isāʾatī, fa-anā al-muqirru bidhanbī, al-muʿtarifu bikhaṭīʾatī, wahādhihi yadī wanāṣiyatī,

What danger I have brought upon myself! My Master, have mercy on me for my fall upon my face and the slipping of my foot. Meet my ignorance with Your forbearance and my wrongdoing with Your kindness. I admit my sin and acknowledge my offence. Here are my hand and my forelock:

أَسْتَكِينُ بِالْقَوَدِ مِنْ نَفْسِي.

Astakīnu bi-al-qawadi min nafsī.

I submit humbly to retribution against myself.

اِرْحَمْ شَيْبَتِي، وَنَفَادَ أَيَّامِي، وَاِقْتِرَابَ أَجَلِي، وَضَعْفِي، وَمَسْكَنَتِي، وَقِلَّةَ حِيلَتِي.

Irḥam shaybatī, wanafāda ayyāmī, wa-iqtirāba ajalī, waḍaʿfī, wamaskanatī, waqillata ḥīlatī.

Have mercy on my grey hair, my dwindling days, my approaching death, my weakness, my poverty and my lack of means.

مَوْلَايَ وَاِرْحَمْنِي إِذَا اِنْقَطَعَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا أَثَرِي، وَاِمَّحَى مِنَ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ ذِكْرِي، وَكُنْتُ فِي الْمَنْسِيِّينَ، كَمَنْ قَدْ نُسِيَ.

Mawlāya wa-irḥamnī idhā inqaṭaʿa mina al-dunyā atharī, wa-immaḥā mina al-makhlūqīna dhikrī, wakuntu fī al-mansiyyīna, kaman qad nusiya.

My Master, have mercy on me when my trace in this world is gone, when memory of me is erased from among created beings, and I am among the forgotten, as one wholly forgotten.

مَوْلَايَ وَاِرْحَمْنِي عِنْدَ تَغَيُّرِ صُورَتِي وَحَالِي إِذَا بَلِيَ جِسْمِي، وَتَفَرَّقَتْ أَعْضَائِي، وَتَقَطَّعَتْ أَوْصَالِي، يَا غَفْلَتِي عَمَّا يُرَادُ بِي.

Mawlāya wa-irḥamnī ʿinda taghayyuri ṣūratī waḥālī idhā baliya jismī, watafarraqat aʿḍāʾī, wataqaṭṭaʿat awṣālī, yā ghaflatī ʿammā yurādu bī.

My Master, have mercy on me when my appearance and condition change, when my body decays, my limbs fall apart and my joints are severed. How heedless I am of what awaits me!

مَوْلَايَ وَاِرْحَمْنِي فِي حَشْرِي وَنَشْرِي، وَاِجْعَلْ فِي ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمِ مَعَ أَوْلِيَائِكَ مَوْقِفِي، وَفِي أَحِبَّائِكَ مَصْدَرِي، وَفِي جِوَارِكَ مَسْكَنِي يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Mawlāya wa-irḥamnī fī ḥashrī wanashrī, wa-ijʿal fī dhālika al-yawmi maʿa awliyāʾika mawqifī, wafī aḥibbāʾika maṣdarī, wafī jiwārika maskanī yā rabba al-ʿālamīna.

My Master, have mercy on me when I am gathered and raised again. On that day, let me stand with Your friends, depart among those You love, and dwell in Your nearness, Lord of all worlds.

فِي اسْتِكْشَافِ الْهُمُومِ

Fī istikshāfi al-humūmi

To ask that worries be lifted

يَا فَارِجَ الْهَمِّ وَكَاشِفَ الْغَمِّ، يَا رَحْمَٰنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ وَرَحِيمَهُمَا، صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَاُفْرُجْ هَمِّي، وَاِكْشِفْ غَمِّي، يَا وَاحِدُ يَا أَحَدُ، يَا صَمَدُ،

Yā fārija al-hammi wakāshifa al-ghammi, yā raḥmāna al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati waraḥīmahumā, ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin, wa-ufruj hammī, wa-ikshif ghammī, yā wāḥidu yā aḥadu, yā ṣamadu,

O Reliever of worry and Remover of grief, Merciful One of this world and the next, who shows mercy in both! Bless Muhammad and his family, relieve my worry and remove my grief. O One, O Unique One, O Everlasting Refuge,

يَا مَنْ لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ، وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ، اِعْصِمْنِي وَطَهِّرْنِي، وَاِذْهَبْ بِبَلِيَّتِي.

Yā man lam yalid walam yūlad, walam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥadun, iʿṣimnī waṭahhirnī, wa-idhhab bibaliyyatī.

You who neither beget nor are begotten, and whose equal there is none! Guard me, purify me and take away my affliction.

[وَاِقْرَأْ آيَةَ الْكُرْسِيِّ وَالْمُعَوِّذَتَيْنِ وَقُلْ هُوَ اللَّٰهُ أَحَدٌ وَقُلْ: ] اللَّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ سُؤَالَ مَنِ اِشْتَدَّتْ فَاقَتُهُ، وَضَعُفَتْ قُوَّتُهُ، وَكَثُرَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ، سُؤَالَ مَنْ لَا يَجِدُ لِفَاقَتِهِ مُغِيثًا،

[wa-iqraʾ āyata al-kursiyyi wa-al-muʿawwidhatayni waqul huwa Allāhu aḥadun waqul: ] Allāhumma innī asʾaluka suʾāla mani ishtaddat fāqatuhu, waḍaʿufat quwwatuhu, wakathurat dhunūbuhu, suʾāla man lā yajidu lifāqatihi mughīthan,

[Recite the Throne Verse, the two surahs of seeking refuge, and “Say: He is God, One”; then say:] O God, I ask You as one whose need has become severe, whose strength has weakened and whose sins have multiplied; as one who finds no rescuer from his need,

وَلَا لِضَعْفِهِ مُقَوِّيًا، وَلَا لِذَنْبِهِ غَافِرًا غَيْرَكَ، يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ.

Walā liḍaʿfihi muqawwiyan, walā lidhanbihi ghāfiran ghayraka, yā dhā al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi.

no one to strengthen him in his weakness, and no forgiver of his sin but You, Possessor of majesty and honour.

أَسْأَلُكَ عَمَلًا تُحِبُّ بِهِ مَنْ عَمِلَ بِهِ، وَيَقِينًا تَنْفَعُ بِهِ مَنِ اِسْتَيْقَنَ بِهِ حَقَّ الْيَقِينِ فِي نَفَاذِ أَمْرِكَ.

Asʾaluka ʿamalan tuḥibbu bihi man ʿamila bihi, wayaqīnan tanfaʿu bihi mani istayqana bihi ḥaqqa al-yaqīni fī nafādhi amrika.

I ask You for deeds for which You love those who perform them, and for certainty by which You benefit those who hold it: true certainty that Your command takes effect.

اللَّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَاِقْبِضْ عَلَى الصِّدْقِ نَفْسِي، وَاِقْطَعْ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا حَاجَتِي، وَاِجْعَلْ فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ رَغْبَتِي، شَوْقًا إِلَى لِقَائِكَ، وَهَبْ لِي صِدْقَ التَّوَكُّلِ عَلَيْكَ.

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin, wa-iqbiḍ ʿalā al-ṣidqi nafsī, wa-iqṭaʿ mina al-dunyā ḥājatī, wa-ijʿal fīmā ʿindaka raghbatī, shawqan ilā liqāʾika, wahab lī ṣidqa al-tawakkuli ʿalayka.

O God, bless Muhammad and his family. Take my soul in truthfulness, cut off my dependence on this world, and direct my desire toward what is with You, in longing to meet You. Grant me sincere reliance on You.

أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ خَيْرِ كِتَابٍ قَدْ خَلَا وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كِتَابٍ قَدْ خَلَا أَسْأَلُكَ خَوْفَ الْعَابِدِينَ لَكَ، وَعِبَادَةَ الْخَاشِعِينَ لَكَ، وَيَقِينَ الْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ عَلَيْكَ، وَتَوَكُّلَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلَيْكَ.

Asʾaluka min khayri kitābin qad khalā wa-aʿūdhu bika min sharri kitābin qad khalā asʾaluka khawfa al-ʿābidīna laka, waʿibādata al-khāshiʿīna laka, wayaqīna al-mutawakkilīna ʿalayka, watawakkula al-muʾminīna ʿalayka.

I ask You for the good of every decree already recorded, and seek refuge in You from the harm of every decree already recorded. I ask You for the fear of those who worship You, the worship of those humble before You, the certainty of those who rely on You, and the reliance upon You of those who believe.

اللَّٰهُمَّ اِجْعَلْ رَغْبَتِي فِي مَسْأَلَتِي مِثْلَ رَغْبَةِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ فِي مَسَائِلِهِمْ، وَرَهْبَتِي مِثْلَ رَهْبَةِ أَوْلِيَائِكَ، وَاِسْتَعْمِلْنِي فِي مَرْضَاتِكَ،

Allāhumma ijʿal raghbatī fī masʾalatī mithla raghbati awliyāʾika fī masāʾilihim, warahbatī mithla rahbati awliyāʾika, wa-istaʿmilnī fī marḍātika,

O God, make my longing in my petition like the longing of Your friends in their petitions, and my fear like the fear of Your friends. Employ me in what pleases You,

عَمَلًا لَا أَتْرُكُ مَعَهُ شَيْئًا مِنْ دِينِكَ مَخَافَةَ أَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ.

ʿamalan lā atruku maʿahu shayʾan min dīnika makhāfata aḥadin min khalqika.

in deeds through which I leave nothing of Your religion undone out of fear of any of Your creatures.

اللَّٰهُمَّ هَٰذِهِ حَاجَتِي، فَأَعْظِمْ فِيهَا رَغْبَتِي، وَأَظْهِرْ فِيهَا عُذْرِي، وَلَقِّنِّي فِيهَا حُجَّتِي وَعَافِ فِيهَا جَسَدِي.

Allāhumma hādhihi ḥājatī, fa-aʿẓim fīhā raghbatī, wa-aẓhir fīhā ʿudhrī, walaqqinnī fīhā ḥujjatī waʿāfi fīhā jasadī.

O God, this is my need: deepen my longing for its fulfilment, make my excuse clear concerning it, teach me the plea to make for it, and grant my body well-being in it.

اللَّٰهُمَّ مَنْ أَصْبَحَ لَهُ ثِقَةٌ أَوْ رَجَاءٌ غَيْرُكَ، فَقَدْ أَصْبَحْتُ وَأَنْتَ ثِقَتِي وَرَجَائِي فِي الْأُمُورِ كُلِّهَا، فَاِقْضِ لِي بِخَيْرِهَا عَاقِبَةً، وَنَجِّنِي مِنْ مَضَلَّاتِ الْفِتَنِ،

Allāhumma man aṣbaḥa lahu thiqatun aw rajāʾun ghayruka, faqad aṣbaḥtu wa-anta thiqatī warajāʾī fī al-umūri kullihā, fa-iqḍi lī bikhayrihā ʿāqibatan, wanajjinī min maḍallāti al-fitani,

O God, others may wake placing their trust or hope in someone other than You; I wake with You as my trust and hope in every affair. Decree for me the best outcome of those affairs, and save me from trials that lead astray,

بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Biraḥmatika yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

through Your mercy, most merciful of those who show mercy.

وَصَلَّى اللَّٰهُ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ رَسُولِ اللَّٰهِ الْمُصْطَفَى، وَعَلَى آلِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ.

Waṣallā Allāhu ʿalā sayyidinā muḥammadin rasūli Allāhi al-muṣṭafā, waʿalā ālihi al-ṭāhirīna.

Its 106 prayer-body paragraphs have been preserved in order as 260 shorter Arabic–transliteration–English groups: 124 in Prayer 47, 38 in Prayer 48, 23 in Prayer 49, 13 in Prayer 50, 18 in Prayer 51, 21 in Prayer 52, 10 in Prayer 53 and 13 in Prayer 54. Headings, front-matter statements, closing blessings and recitation directions are also retained.

The visual model and transliteration conventions follow 04_Sahifa_Prayers_25-36_Vocalized_Transliteration_English.docx. The English here is newly worded from the supplied Arabic. The source attributes the prayers to Imam ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥusayn; that attribution is preserved without adding a new historical claim.

Repairs and retained readings

Routine treatment: conventional short vowels, case endings, shadda, sukūn and small alif have been supplied or regularized. Spacing, misplaced punctuation, hamza spelling, accusative supporting alif and spellings such as al-samāwāt and dhālika have been normalized. Such changes do not add a passage.

Prayer 47: the missing initial alif in the source’s l-muʿānidīna has been restored as al-muʿānidīna. The malformed imperative wa-imlaʾ has been regularized. The repeated wa-ālihi wa-ālihi (“and his family, and his family”) is retained because it appears in the supplied file, although the checking witness has it once. The source’s al-mutaraddidīna (“the wavering”) and dual yadayya (“both my hands”) are retained.

Prayer 47: “represented by a likeness and thereby found as an object” interprets mawjūdan within the passage’s denial of limitation and representation; it does not imply a denial of God’s existence. The unusual source reading tamnaḥnī is retained and translated “bestow on me,” rather than silently substituting “test me.” The comparison in the sentence beginning “Do not let the respite You grant me…” is syntactically compressed; its precise force remains uncertain, and the translation follows its expressed wording.

Prayer 49: the fragmented wayujarriʿanī has been rejoined. The source’s aẓbaʾa / iẓbāʾ has been corrected to aḍbaʾa / iḍbāʾ, “crouch in ambush,” as supported by the checking witness. The source’s zuʿāf, “deadly poison,” is retained. The opening mā aṣdarta is compressed: “what You had turned me away from” supplies the understood relation, not an added Arabic phrase. In the final petition, an understood request introduces tuʿīdhanī; no extra an has been inserted into the Arabic.

For the opening of Prayer 49, the interpretation was also checked against the parallel translation published by Duas.org; the translation in this document is independently worded.

Duas.org — Ṣaḥīfa, Prayer 49 (parallel text)

Prayer 50: the supplied text breaks off the beginning of the word before ʿāfiyataka, leaving stanī. The reading wa-albastanī (“and You clothed me”) is restored from the Al-Kafeel Prayer 50 text. The quoted Qurʾanic passage is 39:53; only the portion quoted in the supplied prayer is reproduced.

Prayer 54: the source directs the reader to recite the Throne Verse, the two refuge surahs and “Say: He is God, One.” It does not print their full texts at that point, so the direction is retained without inserting extra passages. The bracketed “such-and-such” in Prayer 49 and the instruction after Prayer 48 are likewise source content, not omissions.

Completeness and presentation

The edited Arabic has been compared against every source prayer in sequence, allowing only the stated repairs and orthographic changes. Every prayer unit has its own vocalized Arabic, matching transliteration and English translation. The source’s direction to continue with Document 7 and its statement that edition details appear in Document 9 are reproduced as source information, not as verification of those separate documents.
