Prayers 1 to 12
The first twelve prayers, with the additional prayer remembering Muhammad’s family in its original position after Prayer 3. Each passage appears in fully vocalized Arabic, transliteration, and a new modern English translation.
Reading the three lines
Read each group from Arabic to transliteration to English. Short passages continue the prayer in order; a line ending need not be the end of a sentence. Each three-line group stays together on one page.
ā ī ū mark long vowels; ʿ marks ʿayn and ʾ marks hamza within a word. Initial hamza is represented by its vowel. ḥ ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ distinguish Arabic consonants; th dh kh sh gh represent single Arabic sounds. Doubled consonants are held longer.
The transliteration retains grammatical endings and the written form al. In connected recitation, initial helping vowels often disappear and al assimilates before sun letters. At a full pause, final short case vowels are normally dropped. A separating hyphen, as in nufid-hā, keeps adjacent consonants distinct.
God translates Allāh. “Muhammad and his family” renders Muḥammad wa-ālihi. The first-person prayers remain in the voice of the person praying.

Prayer 1
إِذَا ابْتَدَأَ بِالدُّعَاءِ بَدَأَ بِالتَّحْمِيدِ لِلَّهِ
Idhā ibtadaʾa bi-al-duʿāʾi badaʾa bi-al-taḥmīdi lillāhi
When he began to pray, he first praised God,
عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَالثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالَ
ʿazza wajalla wa-al-thanāʾi ʿalayhi faqāla
mighty and majestic, and extolled Him, saying:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الْأَوَّلِ بِلَا أَوَّلٍ كَانَ قَبْلَهُ،
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi al-awwali bilā awwalin kāna qablahu,
Praise belongs to God, the First, with no first before Him,
وَالْآخِرِ بِلَا آخِرٍ يَكُونُ بَعْدَهُ،
Wa-al-ākhiri bilā ākhirin yakūnu baʿdahu,
and the Last, with no last after Him.
الَّذِي قَصُرَتْ عَنْ رُؤْيَتِهِ أَبْصَارُ النَّاظِرِينَ،
Alladhī qaṣurat ʿan ruʾyatihi abṣāru al-nāẓirīna,
The eyes of those who look cannot see Him,
وَعَجَزَتْ عَنْ نَعْتِهِ أَوْهَامُ الْوَاصِفِينَ.
Waʿajazat ʿan naʿtihi awhāmu al-wāṣifīna.
and the minds of those who describe cannot encompass Him.
ابْتَدَعَ بِقُدْرَتِهِ الْخَلْقَ ابْتِدَاعًا،
Ibtadaʿa biqudratihi al-khalqa ibtidāʿan,
Through His power He brought creation into being,
وَاخْتَرَعَهُمْ عَلَى مَشِيَّتِهِ اخْتِرَاعًا،
Wa-ikhtaraʿahum ʿalā mashiyyatihi ikhtirāʿan,
and gave it existence according to His will.
ثُمَّ سَلَكَ بِهِمْ طَرِيقَ إِرَادَتِهِ،
Thumma salaka bihim ṭarīqa irādatihi,
Then He set His creatures on the path of His purpose
وَبَعَثَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ مَحَبَّتِهِ.
Wabaʿathahum fī sabīli maḥabbatihi.
and sent them forth on the way of His love.
لَا يَمْلِكُونَ تَأْخِيرًا عَمَّا قَدَّمَهُمْ إِلَيْهِ،
Lā yamlikūna taʾkhīran ʿammā qaddamahum ilayhi,
They cannot hold back from what He has brought them towards,
وَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَقَدُّمًا إِلَى مَا أَخَّرَهُمْ عَنْهُ،
Walā yastaṭīʿūna taqadduman ilā mā akhkharahum ʿanhu,
nor advance towards what He has held them back from.
وَجَعَلَ لِكُلِّ رُوحٍ مِنْهُمْ
Wajaʿala likulli rūḥin minhum
For every soul among them He appointed
قُوتًا مَعْلُومًا مَقْسُومًا مِنْ رِزْقِهِ.
Qūtan maʿlūman maqsūman min rizqihi.
a known share of the sustenance He provides.
لَا يَنْقُصُ مَنْ زَادَهُ نَاقِصٌ،
Lā yanquṣu man zādahu nāqiṣun,
No one can reduce the share of one to whom He gives more,
وَلَا يَزِيدُ مَنْ نَقَصَ مِنْهُمْ زَائِدٌ.
Walā yazīdu man naqaṣa minhum zāʾidun.
and no one can increase the share of one to whom He gives less.
ثُمَّ ضَرَبَ لَهُ فِي الْحَيَاةِ أَجَلًا مَوْقُوتًا،
Thumma ḍaraba lahu fī al-ḥayāti ajalan mawqūtan,
He then fixed a term for each life
وَنَصَبَ لَهُ أَمَدًا مَحْدُودًا،
Wanaṣaba lahu amadan maḥdūdan,
and set its appointed limit.
يَتَخَطَّى إِلَيْهِ بِأَيَّامِ عُمُرِهِ،
Yatakhaṭṭā ilayhi biʾayyāmi ʿumurihi,
Each day of life carries the soul a step towards it,
وَيَرْهَقُهُ بِأَعْوَامِ دَهْرِهِ،
Wayarhaquhu biʾaʿwāmi dahrihi,
and each passing year brings it closer.
حَتَّى إِذَا بَلَغَ أَقْصَى أَثَرِهِ،
Ḥattā idhā balagha aqṣā atharihi,
When it reaches the end of its journey
وَاسْتَوْعَبَ حِسَابَ عُمُرِهِ،
Wa-istawʿaba ḥisāba ʿumurihi,
and completes the full measure of its life,
قَبَضَهُ إِلَى مَا نَدَبَهُ إِلَيْهِ
Qabaḍahu ilā mā nadabahu ilayhi
He takes it to what He has summoned it to:
مِنْ مَوْفُورِ ثَوَابِهِ أَوْ مَحْذُورِ عِقَابِهِ،
Min mawfūri thawābihi aw maḥdhūri ʿiqābihi,
His abundant reward or His dreaded punishment,
لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا
Liyajziya alladhīna asāʾū bimā ʿamilū
so that He may repay those who did wrong for their deeds
وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَى،
Wayajziya alladhīna aḥsanū bi-al-ḥusnā,
and reward those who did good with what is best.
عَدْلًا مِنْهُ، تَقَدَّسَتْ أَسْمَاؤُهُ،
ʿadlan minhu, taqaddasat asmāʾuhu,
This is His justice. Holy are His names,
وَتَظَاهَرَتْ آلَاؤُهُ،
Wataẓāharat ālāʾuhu,
and His blessings come in abundance.
لَا يُسْأَلُ عَمَّا يَفْعَلُ وَهُمْ يُسْأَلُونَ.
Lā yusʾalu ʿammā yafʿalu wahum yusʾalūna.
He is not questioned about what He does; they will be questioned.
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي لَوْ حَبَسَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ مَعْرِفَةَ حَمْدِهِ
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī law ḥabasa ʿan ʿibādihi maʿrifata ḥamdihi
Praised be God! Had He kept His servants from knowing how to praise Him,
عَلَى مَا أَبْلَاهُمْ مِنْ مِنَنِهِ الْمُتَتَابِعَةِ،
ʿalā mā ablāhum min minanihi al-mutatābiʿati,
for the favours He bestows upon them one after another,
وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ نِعَمِهِ الْمُتَظَاهِرَةِ،
Wa-asbagha ʿalayhim min niʿamihi al-mutaẓāhirati,
and the blessings He showers upon them in abundance,
لَتَصَرَّفُوا فِي مِنَنِهِ فَلَمْ يَحْمَدُوهُ،
Lataṣarrafū fī minanihi falam yaḥmadūhu,
they would have used His gifts without praising Him
وَتَوَسَّعُوا فِي رِزْقِهِ فَلَمْ يَشْكُرُوهُ.
Watawassaʿū fī rizqihi falam yashkurūhu.
and enjoyed His plentiful provision without thanking Him.
وَلَوْ كَانُوا كَذَلِكَ لَخَرَجُوا مِنْ حُدُودِ الْإِنْسَانِيَّةِ
Walaw kānū ka-dhālika lakharajū min ḥudūdi al-insāniyyati
Had they done so, they would have fallen beyond the bounds of humanity
إِلَى حَدِّ الْبَهِيمِيَّةِ،
Ilā ḥaddi al-bahīmiyyati,
to the level of beasts.
فَكَانُوا كَمَا وَصَفَ فِي مُحْكَمِ كِتَابِهِ:
Fakānū kamā waṣafa fī muḥkami kitābihi:
They would have been as He describes in His clear Book:
«إِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا كَالْأَنْعَامِ بَلْ هُمْ أَضَلُّ سَبِيلًا».
«in hum illā ka-al-anʿāmi bal hum aḍallu sabīlan».
“They are only like cattle; indeed, they are further astray.”
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى مَا عَرَّفَنَا مِنْ نَفْسِهِ،
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi ʿalā mā ʿarrafanā min nafsihi,
Praise belongs to God for what He has taught us of Himself,
وَأَلْهَمَنَا مِنْ شُكْرِهِ،
Wa-alhamanā min shukrihi,
for inspiring us to thank Him,
وَفَتَحَ لَنَا مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الْعِلْمِ بِرُبُوبِيَّتِهِ،
Wafataḥa lanā min abwābi al-ʿilmi birubūbiyyatihi,
and for opening to us the doors of knowledge of His lordship.
وَدَلَّنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْإِخْلَاصِ لَهُ فِي تَوْحِيدِهِ،
Wadallanā ʿalayhi mina al-ikhlāṣi lahu fī tawḥīdihi,
He has shown us how to affirm His oneness with sincere devotion
وَجَنَّبَنَا مِنَ الْإِلْحَادِ وَالشَّكِّ فِي أَمْرِهِ،
Wajannabanā mina al-ilḥādi wa-al-shakki fī amrihi,
and kept us from deviation and doubt concerning Him.
حَمْدًا نُعَمَّرُ بِهِ فِيمَنْ حَمِدَهُ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ،
Ḥamdan nuʿammaru bihi fīman ḥamidahu min khalqihi,
Let this praise give us life among His creatures who praise Him,
وَنَسْبِقُ بِهِ مَنْ سَبَقَ إِلَى رِضَاهُ وَعَفْوِهِ،
Wanasbiqu bihi man sabaqa ilā riḍāhu waʿafwihi,
and carry us ahead of those who have already sought His pleasure and pardon.
حَمْدًا يُضِيءُ لَنَا بِهِ ظُلُمَاتِ الْبَرْزَخِ،
Ḥamdan yuḍīʾu lanā bihi ẓulumāti al-barzakhi,
Through this praise, may He light for us the darkness between death and resurrection,
وَيُسَهِّلُ عَلَيْنَا بِهِ سَبِيلَ الْمَبْعَثِ،
Wayusahhilu ʿalaynā bihi sabīla al-mabʿathi,
make our passage to resurrection easy,
وَيُشَرِّفُ بِهِ مَنَازِلَنَا عِنْدَ مَوَاقِفِ الْأَشْهَادِ،
Wayusharrifu bihi manāzilanā ʿinda mawāqifi al-ashhādi,
and honour our standing where the witnesses gather,
يَوْمَ تُجْزَى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ،
Yawma tujzā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat wahum lā yuẓlamūna,
on the day when every soul is repaid for what it earned, and none is wronged,
«يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِي مَوْلًى عَنْ مَوْلًى شَيْئًا وَلَا هُمْ يُنْصَرُونَ».
«yawma lā yughnī mawlan ʿan mawlan shayʾan walā hum yunṣarūna».
“The day when no friend can help another at all, nor will they be helped.”
حَمْدًا يَرْتَفِعُ مِنَّا إِلَى أَعْلَى عِلِّيِّينَ،
Ḥamdan yartafiʿu minnā ilā aʿlā ʿilliyyīna,
May our praise rise to the highest reaches of ʿIlliyyīn,
فِي كِتَابٍ مَرْقُومٍ يَشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ،
Fī kitābin marqūmin yashhaduhu al-muqarrabūna,
in a written record witnessed by those brought near to God.
حَمْدًا تَقَرُّ بِهِ عُيُونُنَا إِذَا بَرِقَتِ الْأَبْصَارُ،
Ḥamdan taqarru bihi ʿuyūnunā idhā bariqati al-abṣāru,
May this praise bring joy to our eyes when other eyes stare in terror,
وَتَبْيَضُّ بِهِ وُجُوهُنَا إِذَا اسْوَدَّتِ الْأَبْشَارُ،
Watabyaḍḍu bihi wujūhunā idhā iswaddati al-abshāru,
and brighten our faces when other faces darken.
حَمْدًا نُعْتَقُ بِهِ مِنْ أَلِيمِ نَارِ اللَّهِ
Ḥamdan nuʿtaqu bihi min alīmi nāri Allāhi
May it free us from the pain of God’s Fire
إِلَى كَرِيمِ جِوَارِ اللَّهِ،
Ilā karīmi jiwāri Allāhi,
and bring us into the honour of His nearness.
حَمْدًا نُزَاحِمُ بِهِ مَلَائِكَتَهُ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ،
Ḥamdan nuzāḥimu bihi malāʾikatahu al-muqarrabīna,
May this praise place us alongside His angels who are brought near,
وَنُضَامُّ بِهِ أَنْبِيَاءَهُ الْمُرْسَلِينَ،
Wanuḍāmmu bihi anbiyāʾahu al-mursalīna,
and join us to the prophets He sent,
فِي دَارِ الْمُقَامَةِ الَّتِي لَا تَزُولُ،
Fī dāri al-muqāmati allatī lā tazūlu,
in the everlasting home
وَمَحَلِّ كَرَامَتِهِ الَّتِي لَا تَحُولُ.
Wamaḥalli karāmatihi allatī lā taḥūlu.
and the place of His unchanging honour.
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي اخْتَارَ لَنَا مَحَاسِنَ الْخَلْقِ،
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī ikhtāra lanā maḥāsina al-khalqi,
Praise belongs to God, who chose for us a beautiful form,
وَأَجْرَى عَلَيْنَا طَيِّبَاتِ الرِّزْقِ،
Wa-ajrā ʿalaynā ṭayyibāti al-rizqi,
provided us with wholesome sustenance,
وَجَعَلَ لَنَا الْفَضِيلَةَ بِالْمَلَكَةِ عَلَى جَمِيعِ الْخَلْقِ،
Wajaʿala lanā al-faḍīlata bi-al-malakati ʿalā jamīʿi al-khalqi,
and favoured us with mastery over the rest of creation.
فَكُلُّ خَلِيقَتِهِ مُنْقَادَةٌ لَنَا بِقُدْرَتِهِ،
Fakullu khalīqatihi munqādatun lanā biqudratihi,
Through His power, His creatures yield to us,
وَصَائِرَةٌ إِلَى طَاعَتِنَا بِعِزَّتِهِ.
Waṣāʾiratun ilā ṭāʿatinā biʿizzatihi.
and through His might they come under our direction.
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَغْلَقَ عَنَّا بَابَ الْحَاجَةِ إِلَّا إِلَيْهِ،
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī aghlaqa ʿannā bāba al-ḥājati illā ilayhi,
Praise belongs to God, who has left us ultimately in need of Him alone.
فَكَيْفَ نُطِيقُ حَمْدَهُ أَمْ مَتَى نُؤَدِّي شُكْرَهُ؟ لَا، مَتَى؟
Fakayfa nuṭīqu ḥamdahu am matā nuʾaddī shukrahu? lā, matā?
How can we praise Him enough? When can we thank Him fully? How could we?
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي رَكَّبَ فِينَا آلَاتِ الْبَسْطِ،
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī rakkaba fīnā ālāti al-basṭi,
Praise belongs to God, who gave our bodies the means to stretch out
وَجَعَلَ لَنَا أَدَوَاتِ الْقَبْضِ،
Wajaʿala lanā adawāti al-qabḍi,
and the means to draw in,
وَمَتَّعَنَا بِأَرْوَاحِ الْحَيَاةِ،
Wamattaʿanā biʾarwāḥi al-ḥayāti,
granted us the breath of life,
وَأَثْبَتَ فِينَا جَوَارِحَ الْأَعْمَالِ،
Wa-athbata fīnā jawāriḥa al-aʿmāli,
and equipped us with limbs for action.
وَغَذَّانَا بِطَيِّبَاتِ الرِّزْقِ،
Waghadhdhānā biṭayyibāti al-rizqi,
He nourished us with wholesome provision,
وَأَغْنَانَا بِفَضْلِهِ، وَأَقْنَانَا بِمَنِّهِ.
Wa-aghnānā bifaḍlihi, wa-aqnānā bimannihi.
enriched us through His grace, and supplied our needs through His generosity.
ثُمَّ أَمَرَنَا لِيَخْتَبِرَ طَاعَتَنَا،
Thumma amaranā liyakhtabira ṭāʿatanā,
He then gave us commands to test our obedience
وَنَهَانَا لِيَبْتَلِيَ شُكْرَنَا.
Wanahānā liyabtaliya shukranā.
and prohibitions to test our gratitude.
فَخَالَفْنَا عَنْ طَرِيقِ أَمْرِهِ،
Fakhālafnā ʿan ṭarīqi amrihi,
Yet we turned from the path He commanded
وَرَكِبْنَا مُتُونَ زَجْرِهِ،
Warakibnā mutūna zajrihi,
and plunged into what He forbade.
فَلَمْ يَبْتَدِرْنَا بِعُقُوبَتِهِ،
Falam yabtadirnā biʿuqūbatihi,
He did not rush to punish us
وَلَمْ يُعَاجِلْنَا بِنِقْمَتِهِ،
Walam yuʿājilnā biniqmatihi,
or hasten to take retribution.
بَلْ تَأَنَّانَا بِرَحْمَتِهِ تَكَرُّمًا،
Bal taʾannānā biraḥmatihi takarruman,
In His generosity He patiently showed us mercy,
وَانْتَظَرَ مُرَاجَعَتَنَا بِرَأْفَتِهِ حِلْمًا.
Wa-intaẓara murājaʿatanā biraʾfatihi ḥilman.
and in His gentle forbearance He waited for our return.
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي دَلَّنَا عَلَى التَّوْبَةِ
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī dallanā ʿalā al-tawbati
Praise belongs to God, who showed us the way of repentance,
الَّتِي لَمْ نُفِدْهَا إِلَّا مِنْ فَضْلِهِ.
Allatī lam nufid-hā illā min faḍlihi.
which we gained only through His grace.
فَلَوْ لَمْ نَعْتَدِدْ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ إِلَّا بِهَا
Falaw lam naʿtadid min faḍlihi illā bihā
Even if repentance were the only gift of His grace we could count,
لَقَدْ حَسُنَ بَلَاؤُهُ عِنْدَنَا،
Laqad ḥasuna balāʾuhu ʿindanā,
His kindness towards us would still be great,
وَجَلَّ إِحْسَانُهُ إِلَيْنَا، وَجَسُمَ فَضْلُهُ عَلَيْنَا.
Wajalla iḥsānuhu ilaynā, wajasuma faḍluhu ʿalaynā.
His goodness immense, and His generosity beyond measure.
فَمَا هَكَذَا كَانَتْ سُنَّتُهُ فِي التَّوْبَةِ
Famā hākadhā kānat sunnatuhu fī al-tawbati
For this was not His way of accepting repentance
لِمَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَنَا.
Liman kāna qablanā.
from those who came before us.
لَقَدْ وَضَعَ عَنَّا مَا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِهِ،
Laqad waḍaʿa ʿannā mā lā ṭāqata lanā bihi,
He has lifted from us what we cannot bear,
وَلَمْ يُكَلِّفْنَا إِلَّا وُسْعًا،
Walam yukallifnā illā wusʿan,
required only what lies within our capacity,
وَلَمْ يُجَشِّمْنَا إِلَّا يُسْرًا،
Walam yujashshimnā illā yusran,
and burdened us only with what is manageable.
وَلَمْ يَدَعْ لِأَحَدٍ مِنَّا حُجَّةً وَلَا عُذْرًا.
Walam yadaʿ liʾaḥadin minnā ḥujjatan walā ʿudhran.
He has left none of us an argument or excuse.
فَالْهَالِكُ مِنَّا مَنْ هَلَكَ عَلَيْهِ،
Fa-al-hāliku minnā man halaka ʿalayhi,
Whoever among us perishes does so despite His care;
وَالسَّعِيدُ مِنَّا مَنْ رَغِبَ إِلَيْهِ.
Wa-al-saʿīdu minnā man raghiba ilayhi.
whoever finds happiness is one who turns to Him with longing.
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ بِكُلِّ مَا حَمِدَهُ بِهِ أَدْنَى مَلَائِكَتِهِ إِلَيْهِ،
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi bikulli mā ḥamidahu bihi adnā malāʾikatihi ilayhi,
Praise belongs to God with all the praise offered by His nearest angels,
وَأَكْرَمُ خَلِيقَتِهِ عَلَيْهِ، وَأَرْضَى حَامِدِيهِ لَدَيْهِ،
Wa-akramu khalīqatihi ʿalayhi, wa-arḍā ḥāmidīhi ladayhi,
His most honoured creatures, and those whose praise pleases Him most.
حَمْدًا يَفْضُلُ سَائِرَ الْحَمْدِ
Ḥamdan yafḍulu sāʾira al-ḥamdi
May this praise surpass all other praise
كَفَضْلِ رَبِّنَا عَلَى جَمِيعِ خَلْقِهِ.
Kafaḍli rabbinā ʿalā jamīʿi khalqihi.
as our Lord surpasses all His creation.
ثُمَّ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ مَكَانَ كُلِّ نِعْمَةٍ لَهُ عَلَيْنَا
Thumma lahu al-ḥamdu makāna kulli niʿmatin lahu ʿalaynā
To Him belongs praise for every blessing He has granted us
وَعَلَى جَمِيعِ عِبَادِهِ الْمَاضِينَ وَالْبَاقِينَ،
Waʿalā jamīʿi ʿibādihi al-māḍīna wa-al-bāqīna,
and all His servants, past and present:
عَدَدَ مَا أَحَاطَ بِهِ عِلْمُهُ مِنْ جَمِيعِ الْأَشْيَاءِ،
ʿadada mā aḥāṭa bihi ʿilmuhu min jamīʿi al-ashyāʾi,
praise as countless as all the things encompassed by His knowledge,
وَمَكَانَ كُلِّ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْهَا عَدَدُهَا أَضْعَافًا مُضَاعَفَةً،
Wamakāna kulli wāḥidatin minhā ʿadaduhā aḍʿāfan muḍāʿafatan,
and, for each blessing, that number multiplied many times over,
أَبَدًا سَرْمَدًا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ،
Abadan sarmadan ilā yawmi al-qiyāmati,
unceasingly, for ever, until the Day of Resurrection.
حَمْدًا لَا مُنْتَهَى لِحَدِّهِ، وَلَا حِسَابَ لِعَدَدِهِ،
Ḥamdan lā muntahā liḥaddihi, walā ḥisāba liʿadadihi,
Praise without limit or number,
وَلَا مَبْلَغَ لِغَايَتِهِ، وَلَا انْقِطَاعَ لِأَمَدِهِ،
Walā mablagha lighāyatihi, walā inqiṭāʿa liʾamadihi,
beyond all measure, never coming to an end.
حَمْدًا يَكُونُ وُصْلَةً إِلَى طَاعَتِهِ وَعَفْوِهِ،
Ḥamdan yakūnu wuṣlatan ilā ṭāʿatihi waʿafwihi,
May this praise lead us to obey Him and receive His pardon,
وَسَبَبًا إِلَى رِضْوَانِهِ، وَذَرِيعَةً إِلَى مَغْفِرَتِهِ،
Wasababan ilā riḍwānihi, wadharīʿatan ilā maghfiratihi,
win His pleasure, and open the way to His forgiveness.
وَطَرِيقًا إِلَى جَنَّتِهِ، وَخَفِيرًا مِنْ نَقِمَتِهِ،
Waṭarīqan ilā jannatihi, wakhafīran min naqimatihi,
May it be a path to His Garden and protection from His retribution,
وَأَمْنًا مِنْ غَضَبِهِ، وَظَهِيرًا عَلَى طَاعَتِهِ،
Wa-amnan min ghaḍabihi, waẓahīran ʿalā ṭāʿatihi,
safety from His anger and support in obeying Him,
وَحَاجِزًا عَنْ مَعْصِيَتِهِ،
Waḥājizan ʿan maʿṣiyatihi,
a barrier against disobeying Him,
وَعَوْنًا عَلَى تَأْدِيَةِ حَقِّهِ وَوَظَائِفِهِ،
Waʿawnan ʿalā taʾdiyati ḥaqqihi wawaẓāʾifihi,
and help in fulfilling what we owe Him and the duties He has prescribed.
حَمْدًا نَسْعَدُ بِهِ فِي السُّعَدَاءِ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِهِ،
Ḥamdan nasʿadu bihi fī al-suʿadāʾi min awliyāʾihi,
May this praise bring us happiness among His friends who are blessed,
وَنَصِيرُ بِهِ فِي نَظْمِ الشُّهَدَاءِ بِسُيُوفِ أَعْدَائِهِ.
Wanaṣīru bihi fī naẓmi al-shuhadāʾi bisuyūfi aʿdāʾihi.
and place us among the martyrs slain by the swords of His enemies.
إِنَّهُ وَلِيٌّ حَمِيدٌ.
Innahu waliyyun ḥamīdun.
He is the Guardian, worthy of all praise.

الصَّلَاةُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ بَعْدَ هَذَا التَّحْمِيدِ
Al-ṣalātu ʿalā rasūli Allāhi ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālihi baʿda hādhā al-taḥmīdi
After this praise, blessings on God’s Messenger, God bless him and his family.
وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي مَنَّ عَلَيْنَا بِمُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّهِ،
Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī manna ʿalaynā bimuḥammadin nabiyyihi,
Praise belongs to God, who favoured us with His Prophet Muhammad,
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālihi,
may God bless him and his family,
دُونَ الْأُمَمِ الْمَاضِيَةِ وَالْقُرُونِ السَّالِفَةِ،
Dūna al-umami al-māḍiyati wa-al-qurūni al-sālifati,
distinguishing us from earlier nations and past generations.
بِقُدْرَتِهِ الَّتِي لَا تَعْجِزُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ وَإِنْ عَظُمَ،
Biqudratihi allatī lā taʿjizu ʿan shayʾin wa-in ʿaẓuma,
He did so through His power, for which nothing is too great,
وَلَا يَفُوتُهَا شَيْءٌ وَإِنْ لَطُفَ.
Walā yafūtuhā shayʾun wa-in laṭufa.
and from which nothing escapes, however small.
فَخَتَمَ بِنَا عَلَى جَمِيعِ مَنْ ذَرَأَ،
Fakhatama binā ʿalā jamīʿi man dharaʾa,
With us He brought to completion the succession of His created peoples,
وَجَعَلَنَا شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى مَنْ جَحَدَ،
Wajaʿalanā shuhadāʾa ʿalā man jaḥada,
made us witnesses against those who denied Him,
وَكَثَّرَنَا بِمَنِّهِ عَلَى مَنْ قَلَّ.
Wakaththaranā bimannihi ʿalā man qalla.
and by His favour made us more numerous than those who were few.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ أَمِينِكَ عَلَى وَحْيِكَ،
Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin amīnika ʿalā waḥyika,
O God, bless Muhammad, whom You entrusted with Your revelation,
وَنَجِيبِكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ وَصَفِيِّكَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ،
Wanajībika min khalqika waṣafiyyika min ʿibādika,
Your chosen one among creation, Your elect among Your servants,
إِمَامِ الرَّحْمَةِ وَقَائِدِ الْخَيْرِ وَمِفْتَاحِ الْبَرَكَةِ،
Imāmi al-raḥmati waqāʾidi al-khayri wamiftāḥi al-barakati,
the leader in mercy, the guide to goodness, and the key to blessing.
كَمَا نَصَبَ لِأَمْرِكَ نَفْسَهُ،
Kamā naṣaba liʾamrika nafsahu,
Bless him for devoting himself to Your command,
وَعَرَّضَ فِيكَ لِلْمَكْرُوهِ بَدَنَهُ،
Waʿarraḍa fīka li-l-makrūhi badanahu,
exposing his body to suffering for Your sake,
وَكَاشَفَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ إِلَيْكَ حَامَّتَهُ،
Wakāshafa fī al-duʿāʾi ilayka ḥāmmatahu,
and openly confronting his closest kin as he called them to You.
وَحَارَبَ فِي رِضَاكَ أُسْرَتَهُ،
Waḥāraba fī riḍāka usratahu,
To win Your pleasure he fought against his own clan,
وَقَطَعَ فِي إِحْيَاءِ دِينِكَ رَحِمَهُ،
Waqaṭaʿa fī iḥyāʾi dīnika raḥimahu,
and to give life to Your religion he broke with his relatives.
وَأَقْصَى الْأَدْنَيْنَ عَلَى جُحُودِهِمْ،
Wa-aqṣā al-adnayna ʿalā juḥūdihim,
He kept close relatives at a distance because of their denial,
وَقَرَّبَ الْأَقْصَيْنَ عَلَى اسْتِجَابَتِهِمْ لَكَ،
Waqarraba al-aqṣayna ʿalā istijābatihim laka,
and drew distant people near because they answered You.
وَوَالَى فِيكَ الْأَبْعَدِينَ وَعَادَى فِيكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ.
Wawālā fīka al-abʿadīna waʿādā fīka al-aqrabīna.
For Your sake he befriended strangers and opposed his nearest kin.
وَأَدْأَبَ نَفْسَهُ فِي تَبْلِيغِ رِسَالَتِكَ،
Wa-adʾaba nafsahu fī tablīghi risālatika,
He laboured tirelessly to convey Your message,
وَأَتْعَبَهَا بِالدُّعَاءِ إِلَى مِلَّتِكَ،
Wa-atʿabahā bi-al-duʿāʾi ilā millatika,
wore himself out calling people to Your faith,
وَشَغَلَهَا بِالنُّصْحِ لِأَهْلِ دَعْوَتِكَ.
Washaghalahā bi-al-nuṣḥi liʾahli daʿwatika.
and devoted himself to the good of those who answered Your call.
وَهَاجَرَ إِلَى بِلَادِ الْغُرْبَةِ وَمَحَلِّ النَّأْيِ،
Wahājara ilā bilādi al-ghurbati wamaḥalli al-naʾyi,
He migrated to a foreign land, far away
عَنْ مَوْطِنِ رَحْلِهِ وَمَوْضِعِ رِجْلِهِ،
ʿan mawṭini raḥlihi wamawḍiʿi rijlihi,
from his home and familiar ground,
وَمَسْقَطِ رَأْسِهِ وَمَأْنَسِ نَفْسِهِ،
Wamasqaṭi raʾsihi wamaʾnasi nafsihi,
from his birthplace and the place where he felt at ease.
إِرَادَةً مِنْهُ لِإِعْزَازِ دِينِكَ،
Irādatan minhu liʾiʿzāzi dīnika,
He did this to strengthen Your religion
وَاسْتِنْصَارًا عَلَى أَهْلِ الْكُفْرِ بِكَ،
Wa-istinṣāran ʿalā ahli al-kufri bika,
and seek support against those who rejected You,
حَتَّى اسْتَتَبَّ لَهُ مَا حَاوَلَ فِي أَعْدَائِكَ،
Ḥattā istatabba lahu mā ḥāwala fī aʿdāʾika,
until his efforts against Your enemies succeeded
وَاسْتَتَمَّ لَهُ مَا دَبَّرَ فِي أَوْلِيَائِكَ.
Wa-istatamma lahu mā dabbara fī awliyāʾika.
and his plans for Your friends were fulfilled.
فَنَهَدَ إِلَيْهِمْ مُسْتَفْتِحًا بِعَوْنِكَ،
Fanahada ilayhim mustaftiḥan biʿawnika,
Then he advanced against them, seeking victory through Your help
وَمُتَقَوِّيًا عَلَى ضَعْفِهِ بِنَصْرِكَ.
Wamutaqawwiyan ʿalā ḍaʿfihi binaṣrika.
and overcoming his weakness through Your support.
فَغَزَاهُمْ فِي عُقْرِ دِيَارِهِمْ،
Faghazāhum fī ʿuqri diyārihim,
He fought them in the heart of their own lands
وَهَجَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي بُحْبُوحَةِ قَرَارِهِمْ،
Wahajama ʿalayhim fī buḥbūḥati qarārihim,
and attacked them within their secure strongholds,
حَتَّى ظَهَرَ أَمْرُكَ وَعَلَتْ كَلِمَتُكَ،
Ḥattā ẓahara amruka waʿalat kalimatuka,
until Your command prevailed and Your word rose supreme,
وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ.
Walaw kariha al-mushrikūna.
however much the idolaters disliked it.
اللَّهُمَّ فَارْفَعْهُ بِمَا كَدَحَ فِيكَ
Allāhumma fa-irfaʿhu bimā kadaḥa fīka
O God, for all his striving in Your service, raise him
إِلَى الدَّرَجَةِ الْعُلْيَا مِنْ جَنَّتِكَ،
Ilā al-darajati al-ʿulyā min jannatika,
to the highest degree in Your Garden,
حَتَّى لَا يُسَاوَى فِي مَنْزِلَةٍ،
Ḥattā lā yusāwā fī manzilatin,
so that no one equals his station
وَلَا يُكَافَأَ فِي مَرْتَبَةٍ،
Walā yukāfaʾa fī martabatin,
or matches his rank,
وَلَا يُوَازِيَهُ لَدَيْكَ مَلَكٌ مُقَرَّبٌ وَلَا نَبِيٌّ مُرْسَلٌ.
Walā yuwāziyahu ladayka malakun muqarrabun walā nabiyyun mursalun.
and no angel brought near or prophet sent can stand equal to him before You.
وَعَرِّفْهُ فِي أَهْلِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ وَأُمَّتِهِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ
Waʿarrifhu fī ahlihi al-ṭāhirīna wa-ummatihi al-muʾminīna
For his pure family and the believers of his community, let him experience,
مِنْ حُسْنِ الشَّفَاعَةِ
Min ḥusni al-shafāʿati
through the gracious intercession You grant him,
أَجَلَّ مَا وَعَدْتَهُ.
Ajalla mā waʿadtahu.
the greatest fulfilment of what You promised him.
يَا نَافِذَ الْعِدَةِ، يَا وَافِيَ الْقَوْلِ،
Yā nāfidha al-ʿidati, yā wāfiya al-qawli,
O You whose promise takes effect, whose word is always fulfilled,
يَا مُبَدِّلَ السَّيِّئَاتِ بِأَضْعَافِهَا مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ،
Yā mubaddila al-sayyiʾāti biʾaḍʿāfihā mina al-ḥasanāti,
who turns evil deeds into good deeds many times their number,
إِنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ الْجَوَادُ الْكَرِيمُ.
Innaka dhū al-faḍli al-ʿaẓīmi al-jawādu al-karīmu.
Yours is boundless grace; You are generous and bountiful.
الدُّعَاءُ ٣

Prayer 3
فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى حَمَلَةِ الْعَرْشِ وَكُلِّ مَلَكٍ مُقَرَّبٍ
Fī al-ṣalāti ʿalā ḥamalati al-ʿarshi wakulli malakin muqarrabin
Blessings on the bearers of the Throne and every angel brought near
اللَّهُمَّ وَحَمَلَةُ عَرْشِكَ الَّذِينَ لَا يَفْتُرُونَ مِنْ تَسْبِيحِكَ،
Allāhumma waḥamalatu ʿarshika alladhīna lā yafturūna min tasbīḥika,
O God, the bearers of Your Throne never slacken in glorifying You,
وَلَا يَسْأَمُونَ مِنْ تَقْدِيسِكَ،
Walā yasʾamūna min taqdīsika,
never tire of declaring Your holiness,
وَلَا يَسْتَحْسِرُونَ مِنْ عِبَادَتِكَ،
Walā yastaḥsirūna min ʿibādatika,
and never become weary of worshipping You.
وَلَا يُؤْثِرُونَ التَّقْصِيرَ عَلَى الْجِدِّ فِي أَمْرِكَ،
Walā yuʾthirūna al-taqṣīra ʿalā al-jiddi fī amrika,
They never choose neglect over diligence in carrying out Your command,
وَلَا يَغْفُلُونَ عَنِ الْوَلَهِ إِلَيْكَ.
Walā yaghfulūna ʿani al-walahi ilayka.
nor become heedless of their yearning for You.
وَإِسْرَافِيلُ صَاحِبُ الصُّورِ،
Wa-isrāfīlu ṣāḥibu al-ṣūri,
And Isrāfīl, bearer of the Trumpet,
الشَّاخِصُ الَّذِي يَنْتَظِرُ مِنْكَ الْإِذْنَ وَحُلُولَ الْأَمْرِ،
Al-shākhiṣu alladhī yantaẓiru minka al-idhna waḥulūla al-amri,
stands alert, awaiting Your permission and the arrival of Your command,
فَيُنَبِّهُ بِالنَّفْخَةِ صَرْعَى رَهَائِنِ الْقُبُورِ.
Fayunabbihu bi-al-nafkhati ṣarʿā rahāʾini al-qubūri.
to rouse with its blast the dead held captive in their graves.
وَمِيكَائِيلُ ذُو الْجَاهِ عِنْدَكَ،
Wamīkāʾīlu dhū al-jāhi ʿindaka,
And Mīkāʾīl, honoured in Your presence,
وَالْمَكَانِ الرَّفِيعِ مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ.
Wa-al-makāni al-rafīʿi min ṭāʿatika.
whose obedience to You has won him a lofty station.
وَجِبْرِيلُ الْأَمِينُ عَلَى وَحْيِكَ،
Wajibrīlu al-amīnu ʿalā waḥyika,
And Jibrīl, entrusted with Your revelation,
الْمُطَاعُ فِي أَهْلِ سَمَاوَاتِكَ،
Al-muṭāʿu fī ahli samāwātika,
obeyed among the inhabitants of Your heavens,
الْمَكِينُ لَدَيْكَ الْمُقَرَّبُ عِنْدَكَ،
Al-makīnu ladayka al-muqarrabu ʿindaka,
firmly established with You and brought near to You.
وَالرُّوحُ الَّذِي هُوَ عَلَى مَلَائِكَةِ الْحُجُبِ،
Wa-al-rūḥu alladhī huwa ʿalā malāʾikati al-ḥujubi,
And the Spirit who presides over the angels of the veils,
وَالرُّوحُ الَّذِي هُوَ مِنْ أَمْرِكَ.
Wa-al-rūḥu alladhī huwa min amrika.
and the Spirit who is of Your command.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ
Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalayhim
O God, bless them,
وَعَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ الَّذِينَ مِنْ دُونِهِمْ،
Waʿalā al-malāʾikati alladhīna min dūnihim,
and the angels of lesser rank,
مِنْ سُكَّانِ سَمَاوَاتِكَ وَأَهْلِ الْأَمَانَةِ عَلَى رِسَالَاتِكَ،
Min sukkāni samāwātika wa-ahli al-amānati ʿalā risālātika,
who dwell in Your heavens and faithfully bear Your messages.
وَالَّذِينَ لَا تَدْخُلُهُمْ سَأْمَةٌ مِنْ دُؤُوبٍ،
Wa-alladhīna lā tadkhuluhum saʾmatun min duʾūbin,
Bless those whose tireless service never becomes tedious,
وَلَا إِعْيَاءٌ مِنْ لُغُوبٍ وَلَا فُتُورٌ،
Walā iʿyāʾun min lughūbin walā futūrun,
who know neither exhaustion from toil nor loss of vigour,
وَلَا تَشْغَلُهُمْ عَنْ تَسْبِيحِكَ الشَّهَوَاتُ،
Walā tashghaluhum ʿan tasbīḥika al-shahawātu,
whose desires never distract them from glorifying You,
وَلَا يَقْطَعُهُمْ عَنْ تَعْظِيمِكَ سَهْوُ الْغَفَلَاتِ،
Walā yaqṭaʿuhum ʿan taʿẓīmika sahwu al-ghafalāti,
and whose reverence for You is never interrupted by heedlessness.
الْخُشَّعُ الْأَبْصَارِ فَلَا يَرُومُونَ النَّظَرَ إِلَيْكَ،
Al-khushshaʿu al-abṣāri falā yarūmūna al-naẓara ilayka,
Their eyes are lowered in humility; they do not attempt to gaze upon You.
النَّوَاكِسُ الْأَذْقَانِ،
Al-nawākisu al-adhqāni,
Their heads are bowed,
الَّذِينَ قَدْ طَالَتْ رَغْبَتُهُمْ فِيمَا لَدَيْكَ،
Alladhīna qad ṭālat raghbatuhum fīmā ladayka,
their longing for what You hold has endured,
الْمُسْتَهْتَرُونَ بِذِكْرِ آلَائِكَ،
Al-mustahtarūna bidhikri ālāʾika,
and they are wholly absorbed in remembering Your blessings.
وَالْمُتَوَاضِعُونَ دُونَ عَظَمَتِكَ وَجَلَالِ كِبْرِيَائِكَ،
Wa-al-mutawāḍiʿūna dūna ʿaẓamatika wajalāli kibriyāʾika,
They humble themselves before Your greatness and majestic glory.
وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ إِذَا نَظَرُوا إِلَى جَهَنَّمَ
Wa-alladhīna yaqūlūna idhā naẓarū ilā jahannama
When they look upon Hell
تَزْفِرُ عَلَى أَهْلِ مَعْصِيَتِكَ:
Tazfiru ʿalā ahli maʿṣiyatika:
roaring against those who disobey You, they say:
«سُبْحَانَكَ مَا عَبَدْنَاكَ حَقَّ عِبَادَتِكَ».
«subḥānaka mā ʿabadnāka ḥaqqa ʿibādatika».
“Glory be to You! We have not worshipped You as You deserve.”
فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ وَعَلَى الرَّوْحَانِيِّينَ مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِكَ،
Faṣalli ʿalayhim waʿalā al-rawḥāniyyīna min malāʾikatika,
Bless them, and the spiritual beings among Your angels,
وَأَهْلِ الزُّلْفَةِ عِنْدَكَ،
Wa-ahli al-zulfati ʿindaka,
those who enjoy nearness to You,
وَحُمَّالِ الْغَيْبِ إِلَى رُسُلِكَ،
Waḥummāli al-ghaybi ilā rusulika,
who carry tidings of the unseen to Your messengers
وَالْمُؤْتَمَنِينَ عَلَى وَحْيِكَ،
Wa-al-muʾtamanīna ʿalā waḥyika,
and are entrusted with Your revelation.
وَقَبَائِلِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الَّذِينَ اخْتَصَصْتَهُمْ لِنَفْسِكَ،
Waqabāʾili al-malāʾikati alladhīna ikhtaṣaṣtahum linafsika,
Bless the companies of angels You have set apart for Yourself,
وَأَغْنَيْتَهُمْ عَنِ الطَّعَامِ وَالشَّرَابِ بِتَقْدِيسِكَ،
Wa-aghnaytahum ʿani al-ṭaʿāmi wa-al-sharābi bitaqdīsika,
whose proclamation of Your holiness makes food and drink unnecessary,
وَأَسْكَنْتَهُمْ بُطُونَ أَطْبَاقِ سَمَاوَاتِكَ،
Wa-askantahum buṭūna aṭbāqi samāwātika,
and whom You have settled within the layers of Your heavens.
وَالَّذِينَ عَلَى أَرْجَائِهَا إِذَا نَزَلَ الْأَمْرُ بِتَمَامِ وَعْدِكَ،
Wa-alladhīna ʿalā arjāʾihā idhā nazala al-amru bitamāmi waʿdika,
Bless those on their outer reaches when the command comes to fulfil Your promise,
وَخُزَّانِ الْمَطَرِ وَزَوَاجِرِ السَّحَابِ،
Wakhuzzāni al-maṭari wazawājiri al-saḥābi,
the keepers of the rain and the drivers of the clouds,
وَالَّذِي بِصَوْتِ زَجْرِهِ يُسْمَعُ زَجَلُ الرُّعُودِ،
Wa-alladhī biṣawti zajrihi yusmaʿu zajalu al-ruʿūdi,
and the one whose driving call is heard as the rumble of thunder.
وَإِذَا سَبَحَتْ بِهِ حَفِيفَةُ السَّحَابِ،
Wa-idhā sabaḥat bihi ḥafīfatu al-saḥābi,
When rustling clouds move along with him,
الْتَمَعَتْ صَوَاعِقُ الْبُرُوقِ.
Iltamaʿat ṣawāʿiqu al-burūqi.
bolts of lightning flash.
وَمُشَيِّعِي الثَّلْجِ وَالْبَرَدِ،
Wamushayyiʿī al-thalji wa-al-baradi,
Bless those who accompany snow and hail,
وَالْهَابِطِينَ مَعَ قَطْرِ الْمَطَرِ إِذَا نَزَلَ،
Wa-al-hābiṭīna maʿa qaṭri al-maṭari idhā nazala,
who descend with raindrops as they fall,
وَالْقُوَّامِ عَلَى خَزَائِنِ الرِّيَاحِ،
Wa-al-quwwāmi ʿalā khazāʾini al-riyāḥi,
who tend the storehouses of the winds,
وَالْمُوَكَّلِينَ بِالْجِبَالِ فَلَا تَزُولُ.
Wa-al-muwakkalīna bi-al-jibāli falā tazūlu.
and who are charged with keeping the mountains in place.
وَالَّذِينَ عَرَّفْتَهُمْ مَثَاقِيلَ الْمِيَاهِ،
Wa-alladhīna ʿarraftahum mathāqīla al-miyāhi,
Bless those You have taught the weights of the waters
وَكَيْلَ مَا تَحْوِيهِ لَوَاعِجُ الْأَمْطَارِ وَعَوَالِجُهَا،
Wakayla mā taḥwīhi lawāʿiju al-amṭāri waʿawālijuhā,
and the measure carried by the driving rains and their piled-up clouds.
وَرُسُلِكَ مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ،
Warusulika mina al-malāʾikati ilā ahli al-arḍi,
Bless Your angelic messengers to the people of the earth,
بِمَكْرُوهِ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ وَمَحْبُوبِ الرَّخَاءِ،
Bimakrūhi mā yanzilu mina al-balāʾi wamaḥbūbi al-rakhāʾi,
who bring both unwelcome trials and welcome ease.
وَالسَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ،
Wa-al-safarati al-kirāmi al-bararati,
Bless the noble, devoted emissaries,
وَالْحَفَظَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْكَاتِبِينَ،
Wa-al-ḥafaẓati al-kirāmi al-kātibīna,
the honoured guardians who record our deeds,
وَمَلَكِ الْمَوْتِ وَأَعْوَانِهِ،
Wamalaki al-mawti wa-aʿwānihi,
the Angel of Death and his helpers,
وَمُنْكَرٍ وَنَكِيرٍ وَرُومَانَ فَتَّانِ الْقُبُورِ،
Wamunkarin wanakīrin warūmāna fattāni al-qubūri,
Munkar and Nakīr, and Rūmān, who tests those in their graves,
وَالطَّائِفِينَ بِالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ،
Wa-al-ṭāʾifīna bi-al-bayti al-maʿmūri,
and those who circle the Frequented House.
وَمَالِكٍ وَالْخَزَنَةِ،
Wamālikin wa-al-khazanati,
Bless Mālik and the keepers of Hell,
وَرِضْوَانَ وَسَدَنَةِ الْجِنَانِ،
Wariḍwāna wasadanati al-jināni,
Riḍwān and the guardians of the Gardens,
وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَعْصُونَ اللَّهَ مَا أَمَرَهُمْ
Wa-alladhīna lā yaʿṣūna Allāha mā amarahum
who never disobey what God commands them
وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ.
Wayafʿalūna mā yuʾmarūna.
and do all they are told to do.
وَالَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ: «سَلَامٌ عَلَيْكُمْ بِمَا صَبَرْتُمْ،
Wa-alladhīna yaqūlūna: «salāmun ʿalaykum bimā ṣabartum,
Bless those who say: “Peace be upon you for your patient endurance.
فَنِعْمَ عُقْبَى الدَّارِ».
Faniʿma ʿuqbā al-dāri».
How wonderful is your final home!”
وَالزَّبَانِيَةِ الَّذِينَ إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ:
Wa-al-zabāniyati alladhīna idhā qīla lahum:
Bless the guards of Hell who, when told,
«خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ»،
«khudhūhu faghullūhu thumma al-jaḥīma ṣallūhu»,
“Seize him, bind him, then cast him into the blazing Fire,”
ابْتَدَرُوهُ سِرَاعًا وَلَمْ يُنْظِرُوهُ.
Ibtadarūhu sirāʿan walam yunẓirūhu.
rush towards him without granting him any delay.
وَمَنْ أَوْهَمْنَا ذِكْرَهُ وَلَمْ نَعْلَمْ مَكَانَهُ مِنْكَ،
Waman awhamnā dhikrahu walam naʿlam makānahu minka,
Bless those we have failed to mention, whose station with You we do not know,
وَبِأَيِّ أَمْرٍ وَكَّلْتَهُ،
Wabiʾayyi amrin wakkaltahu,
nor the task You have assigned them;
وَسُكَّانِ الْهَوَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالْمَاءِ،
Wasukkāni al-hawāʾi wa-al-arḍi wa-al-māʾi,
those who dwell in the air, on earth, and in water,
وَمَنْ مِنْهُمْ عَلَى الْخَلْقِ.
Waman minhum ʿalā al-khalqi.
and those among them charged with watching over creation.
فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَعَهَا سَائِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ،
Faṣalli ʿalayhim yawma taʾtī kullu nafsin maʿahā sāʾiqun washahīdun,
Bless them on the day when every soul comes with a driver and a witness.
وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَاةً تَزِيدُهُمْ كَرَامَةً عَلَى كَرَامَتِهِمْ،
Waṣalli ʿalayhim ṣalātan tazīduhum karāmatan ʿalā karāmatihim,
Bless them with a blessing that adds honour to their honour
وَطَهَارَةً عَلَى طَهَارَتِهِمْ.
Waṭahāratan ʿalā ṭahāratihim.
and purity to their purity.
اللَّهُمَّ وَإِذَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى مَلَائِكَتِكَ وَرُسُلِكَ،
Allāhumma wa-idhā ṣallayta ʿalā malāʾikatika warusulika,
O God, when You bless Your angels and Your messengers
وَبَلَّغْتَهُمْ صَلَاتَنَا عَلَيْهِمْ،
Waballaghtahum ṣalātanā ʿalayhim,
and convey to them our prayers for their blessing,
فَصَلِّ عَلَيْنَا بِمَا فَتَحْتَ لَنَا مِنْ حُسْنِ الْقَوْلِ فِيهِمْ.
Faṣalli ʿalaynā bimā fataḥta lanā min ḥusni al-qawli fīhim.
bless us for the gracious words You have enabled us to speak of them.
إِنَّكَ جَوَادٌ كَرِيمٌ.
Innaka jawādun karīmun.
You are generous and bountiful.
دُعَاءٌ فِي ذِكْرِ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ
Duʿāʾun fī dhikri āli muḥammadin ʿalayhimu al-salāmu
A prayer remembering Muhammad’s family, peace be upon them
اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ خَصَّ مُحَمَّدًا وَآلَهُ بِالْكَرَامَةِ،
Allāhumma yā man khaṣṣa muḥammadan wa-ālahu bi-al-karāmati,
O God, You singled out Muhammad and his family for honour,
وَحَبَاهُمْ بِالرِّسَالَةِ، وَخَصَّصَهُمْ بِالْوَسِيلَةِ،
Waḥabāhum bi-al-risālati, wakhaṣṣaṣahum bi-al-wasīlati,
favoured them with Your message and a special means of nearness to You,
وَجَعَلَهُمْ وَرَثَةَ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ،
Wajaʿalahum warathata al-anbiyāʾi,
You made them heirs to the prophets,
وَخَتَمَ بِهِمُ الْأَوْصِيَاءَ وَالْأَئِمَّةَ،
Wakhatama bihimu al-awṣiyāʾa wa-al-aʾimmata,
brought the succession of trustees and Imams to completion through them,
وَعَلَّمَهُمْ عِلْمَ مَا كَانَ وَعِلْمَ مَا بَقِيَ،
Waʿallamahum ʿilma mā kāna waʿilma mā baqiya,
and taught them what has been and what remains to come.
وَجَعَلَ أَفْئِدَةً مِنَ النَّاسِ تَهْوِي إِلَيْهِمْ،
Wajaʿala afʾidatan mina al-nāsi tahwī ilayhim,
You caused people’s hearts to turn towards them.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ،
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi al-ṭāhirīna,
Bless Muhammad and his pure family,
وَافْعَلْ بِنَا مَا أَنْتَ أَهْلُهُ فِي الدِّينِ وَالدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.
Wa-ifʿal binā mā anta ahluhu fī al-dīni wa-al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati.
and treat us as befits You in our faith, this world, and the life to come.
إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.
Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.
You have power over all things.
الدُّعَاءُ ٤
Al-duʿāʾu 4
Prayer 4
فِي الصَّلَاةِ عَلَى أَتْبَاعِ الرُّسُلِ وَمُصَدِّقِيهِمْ
Fī al-ṣalāti ʿalā atbāʿi al-rusuli wamuṣaddiqīhim
Blessings on those who followed the messengers and affirmed their truth
اللَّهُمَّ وَأَتْبَاعُ الرُّسُلِ
Allāhumma wa-atbāʿu al-rusuli
O God, remember the followers of the messengers,
وَمُصَدِّقُوهُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْأَرْضِ بِالْغَيْبِ،
Wamuṣaddiqūhum min ahli al-arḍi bi-al-ghaybi,
and those on earth who affirmed their truth through faith in the unseen,
عِنْدَ مُعَارَضَةِ الْمُعَانِدِينَ لَهُمْ بِالتَّكْذِيبِ،
ʿinda muʿāraḍati al-muʿānidīna lahum bi-al-takdhībi,
when stubborn opponents resisted them with denial,
وَالِاشْتِيَاقِ إِلَى الْمُرْسَلِينَ بِحَقَائِقِ الْإِيمَانِ،
Wa-al-ishtiyāqi ilā al-mursalīna biḥaqāʾiqi al-īmāni,
and whose true faith filled them with longing for the messengers.
فِي كُلِّ دَهْرٍ وَزَمَانٍ أَرْسَلْتَ فِيهِ رَسُولًا،
Fī kulli dahrin wazamānin arsalta fīhi rasūlan,
In every age and time when You sent a messenger
وَأَقَمْتَ لِأَهْلِهِ دَلِيلًا،
Wa-aqamta liʾahlihi dalīlan,
and appointed a guide for its people,
مِنْ لَدُنْ آدَمَ إِلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ،
Min ladun ādama ilā muḥammadin, ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālihi,
from Adam to Muhammad, may God bless him and his family,
مِنْ أَئِمَّةِ الْهُدَى وَقَادَةِ أَهْلِ التُّقَى،
Min aʾimmati al-hudā waqādati ahli al-tuqā,
they were leaders of guidance and guides of the God-conscious.
عَلَى جَمِيعِهِمُ السَّلَامُ،
ʿalā jamīʿihimu al-salāmu,
Peace be upon them all.
فَاذْكُرْهُمْ مِنْكَ بِمَغْفِرَةٍ وَرِضْوَانٍ.
Fa-udhkurhum minka bimaghfiratin wariḍwānin.
Remember their followers with Your forgiveness and good pleasure.
اللَّهُمَّ وَأَصْحَابُ مُحَمَّدٍ خَاصَّةً،
Allāhumma wa-aṣḥābu muḥammadin khāṣṣatan,
O God, remember especially Muhammad’s companions,
الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا الصَّحَابَةَ،
Alladhīna aḥsanū al-ṣaḥābata,
those who were true companions to him,
وَالَّذِينَ أَبْلَوُا الْبَلَاءَ الْحَسَنَ فِي نَصْرِهِ،
Wa-alladhīna ablawu al-balāʾa al-ḥasana fī naṣrihi,
who proved their worth in supporting him,
وَكَانَفُوهُ وَأَسْرَعُوا إِلَى وِفَادَتِهِ،
Wakānafūhu wa-asraʿū ilā wifādatihi,
stood beside him, and hastened to join him.
وَسَابَقُوا إِلَى دَعْوَتِهِ،
Wasābaqū ilā daʿwatihi,
They raced to answer his call
وَاسْتَجَابُوا لَهُ حَيْثُ أَسْمَعَهُمْ حُجَّةَ رِسَالَاتِهِ،
Wa-istajābū lahu ḥaythu asmaʿahum ḥujjata risālātihi,
and responded when he made them hear the proof of his messages.
وَفَارَقُوا الْأَزْوَاجَ وَالْأَوْلَادَ فِي إِظْهَارِ كَلِمَتِهِ،
Wafāraqū al-azwāja wa-al-awlāda fī iẓhāri kalimatihi,
They left spouses and children to make his message prevail,
وَقَاتَلُوا الْآبَاءَ وَالْأَبْنَاءَ فِي تَثْبِيتِ نُبُوَّتِهِ،
Waqātalū al-ābāʾa wa-al-abnāʾa fī tathbīti nubuwwatihi,
fought fathers and sons to uphold his prophethood,
وَانْتَصَرُوا بِهِ،
Wa-intaṣarū bihi,
and gained strength through him.
وَمَنْ كَانُوا مُنْطَوِينَ عَلَى مَحَبَّتِهِ،
Waman kānū munṭawīna ʿalā maḥabbatihi,
Remember those whose hearts cherished love for him,
يَرْجُونَ تِجَارَةً لَنْ تَبُورَ فِي مَوَدَّتِهِ،
Yarjūna tijāratan lan tabūra fī mawaddatihi,
hoping that their affection for him would be a trade that never fails,
وَالَّذِينَ هَجَرَتْهُمُ الْعَشَائِرُ إِذْ تَعَلَّقُوا بِعُرْوَتِهِ،
Wa-alladhīna hajarat-humu al-ʿashāʾiru idh taʿallaqū biʿurwatihi,
whose clans abandoned them when they held firmly to him,
وَانْتَفَتْ مِنْهُمُ الْقَرَابَاتُ إِذْ سَكَنُوا فِي ظِلِّ قَرَابَتِهِ.
Wa-intafat minhumu al-qarābātu idh sakanū fī ẓilli qarābatihi.
and whose relatives disowned them when they found shelter in closeness to him.
فَلَا تَنْسَ لَهُمُ اللَّهُمَّ مَا تَرَكُوا لَكَ وَفِيكَ،
Falā tansa lahumu Allāhumma mā tarakū laka wafīka,
O God, do not forget what they gave up for You and in Your cause.
وَأَرْضِهِمْ مِنْ رِضْوَانِكَ
Wa-arḍihim min riḍwānika
Satisfy them with Your pleasure,
وَبِمَا حَاشُوا الْخَلْقَ عَلَيْكَ،
Wabimā ḥāshū al-khalqa ʿalayka,
and reward them for gathering people to You,
وَكَانُوا مَعَ رَسُولِكَ دُعَاةً لَكَ إِلَيْكَ.
Wakānū maʿa rasūlika duʿātan laka ilayka.
serving alongside Your Messenger as callers to You, for Your sake.
وَاشْكُرْهُمْ عَلَى هَجْرِهِمْ فِيكَ دِيَارَ قَوْمِهِمْ،
Wa-ushkurhum ʿalā hajrihim fīka diyāra qawmihim,
Reward them for leaving their people’s homes in Your cause
وَخُرُوجِهِمْ مِنْ سَعَةِ الْمَعَاشِ إِلَى ضِيقِهِ،
Wakhurūjihim min saʿati al-maʿāshi ilā ḍīqihi,
and exchanging a comfortable livelihood for hardship.
وَمَنْ كَثَّرْتَ فِي إِعْزَازِ دِينِكَ مِنْ مَظْلُومِهِمْ.
Waman kaththarta fī iʿzāzi dīnika min maẓlūmihim.
and the oppressed among them whose numbers You grew to uphold Your religion.
اللَّهُمَّ وَأَوْصِلْ إِلَى التَّابِعِينَ لَهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ،
Allāhumma wa-awṣil ilā al-tābiʿīna lahum biʾiḥsānin,
O God, grant those who follow them faithfully,
الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ: «رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا
Alladhīna yaqūlūna: «rabbanā ighfir lanā
who say, “Our Lord, forgive us
وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ»،
Waliʾikhwāninā alladhīna sabaqūnā bi-al-īmāni»,
and our brothers and sisters who came before us in faith,”
خَيْرَ جَزَائِكَ،
Khayra jazāʾika,
the best of Your rewards.
الَّذِينَ قَصَدُوا سَمْتَهُمْ وَتَحَرَّوْا وِجْهَتَهُمْ،
Alladhīna qaṣadū samtahum wataḥarraw wijhatahum,
They set out along the same path and carefully sought the same direction,
وَمَضَوْا عَلَى شَاكِلَتِهِمْ،
Wamaḍaw ʿalā shākilatihim,
following their example.
لَمْ يَثْنِهِمْ رَيْبٌ فِي بَصِيرَتِهِمْ،
Lam yathnihim raybun fī baṣīratihim,
No uncertainty in their understanding turned them back,
وَلَمْ يَخْتَلِجْهُمْ شَكٌّ فِي قَفْوِ آثَارِهِمْ
Walam yakhtalijhum shakkun fī qafwi āthārihim
and no doubt unsettled them as they followed their footsteps
وَالِائْتِمَامِ بِهِدَايَةِ مَنَارِهِمْ،
Wa-al-iʾtimāmi bihidāyati manārihim,
and took guidance from their beacon.
مُكَانِفِينَ وَمُوَازِرِينَ لَهُمْ،
Mukānifīna wamuwāzirīna lahum,
They stood by them and supported them,
يَدِينُونَ بِدِينِهِمْ وَيَهْتَدُونَ بِهَدْيِهِمْ،
Yadīnūna bidīnihim wayahtadūna bihadyihim,
embracing their faith and following their guidance.
يَتَّفِقُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ،
Yattafiqūna ʿalayhim,
They were united in allegiance to them
وَلَا يَتَّهِمُونَهُمْ فِيمَا أَدَّوْا إِلَيْهِمْ.
Walā yattahimūnahum fīmā addaw ilayhim.
and did not question their honesty in what they passed on.
اللَّهُمَّ وَصَلِّ عَلَى التَّابِعِينَ
Allāhumma waṣalli ʿalā al-tābiʿīna
O God, bless those who follow them,
مِنْ يَوْمِنَا هَذَا إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّينِ،
Min yawminā hādhā ilā yawmi al-dīni,
from this day until the Day of Judgement,
وَعَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ وَعَلَى ذُرِّيَّاتِهِمْ،
Waʿalā azwājihim waʿalā dhurriyyātihim,
their spouses and their descendants,
وَعَلَى مَنْ أَطَاعَكَ مِنْهُمْ،
Waʿalā man aṭāʿaka minhum,
and all among them who obey You.
صَلَاةً تَعْصِمُهُمْ بِهَا مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ،
Ṣalātan taʿṣimuhum bihā min maʿṣiyatika,
Bless them in a way that protects them from disobeying You,
وَتَفْسَحُ لَهُمْ فِي رِيَاضِ جَنَّتِكَ،
Watafsaḥu lahum fī riyāḍi jannatika,
makes room for them in the meadows of Your Garden,
وَتَمْنَعُهُمْ بِهَا مِنْ كَيْدِ الشَّيْطَانِ،
Watamnaʿuhum bihā min kaydi al-shayṭāni,
and shields them from Satan’s schemes.
وَتُعِينُهُمْ بِهَا عَلَى مَا اسْتَعَانُوكَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ بِرٍّ،
Watuʿīnuhum bihā ʿalā mā istaʿānūka ʿalayhi min birrin,
Help them through it to do the good for which they seek Your help,
وَتَقِيهِمْ طَوَارِقَ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ،
Wataqīhim ṭawāriqa al-layli wa-al-nahāri,
and protect them from what comes unexpectedly by night or day,
إِلَّا طَارِقًا يَطْرُقُ بِخَيْرٍ.
Illā ṭāriqan yaṭruqu bikhayrin.
except for what comes bringing good.
وَتَبْعَثُهُمْ بِهَا عَلَى اعْتِقَادِ حُسْنِ الرَّجَاءِ لَكَ،
Watabʿathuhum bihā ʿalā iʿtiqādi ḥusni al-rajāʾi laka,
Through it, move them to hold firmly to hope in You,
وَالطَّمَعِ فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ،
Wa-al-ṭamaʿi fīmā ʿindaka,
to desire what is with You,
وَتَرْكِ النُّهْمَةِ فِيمَا تَحْوِيهِ أَيْدِي الْعِبَادِ،
Watarki al-nuhmati fīmā taḥwīhi aydī al-ʿibādi,
and to give up craving what other people possess.
لِتَرُدَّهُمْ إِلَى الرَّغْبَةِ إِلَيْكَ وَالرَّهْبَةِ مِنْكَ،
Litaruddahum ilā al-raghbati ilayka wa-al-rahbati minka,
Bring them back to longing for You and standing in awe of You.
وَتُزَهِّدَهُمْ فِي سَعَةِ الْعَاجِلِ،
Watuzahhidahum fī saʿati al-ʿājili,
Free their hearts from attachment to worldly plenty,
وَتُحَبِّبَ إِلَيْهِمُ الْعَمَلَ لِلْآجِلِ،
Watuḥabbiba ilayhimu al-ʿamala li-l-ājili,
make them love working for the life to come
وَالِاسْتِعْدَادَ لِمَا بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ،
Wa-al-istiʿdāda limā baʿda al-mawti,
and preparing for what follows death.
وَتُهَوِّنَ عَلَيْهِمْ كُلَّ كَرْبٍ يَحُلُّ بِهِمْ
Watuhawwina ʿalayhim kulla karbin yaḥullu bihim
Ease every anguish that overtakes them
يَوْمَ خُرُوجِ الْأَنْفُسِ مِنْ أَبْدَانِهَا،
Yawma khurūji al-anfusi min abdānihā,
on the day their souls leave their bodies.
وَتُعَافِيَهُمْ مِمَّا تَقَعُ بِهِ الْفِتْنَةُ مِنْ مَحْذُورَاتِهَا،
Watuʿāfiyahum mimmā taqaʿu bihi al-fitnatu min maḥdhūrātihā,
Keep them safe from the feared ordeals of that departure,
وَكَبَّةِ النَّارِ وَطُولِ الْخُلُودِ فِيهَا،
Wakabbati al-nāri waṭūli al-khulūdi fīhā,
from being thrown into the Fire and remaining there endlessly.
وَتُصَيِّرَهُمْ إِلَى أَمْنٍ مِنْ مَقِيلِ الْمُتَّقِينَ.
Watuṣayyirahum ilā amnin min maqīli al-muttaqīna.
Bring them to safety in the resting place of the God-conscious.

Prayer 5
لِنَفْسِهِ وَأَهْلِ وِلَايَتِهِ
Linafsihi wa-ahli wilāyatihi
For himself and those joined to him in loyal devotion
يَا مَنْ لَا تَنْقَضِي عَجَائِبُ عَظَمَتِهِ،
Yā man lā tanqaḍī ʿajāʾibu ʿaẓamatihi,
O You whose greatness holds wonders without end,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family,
وَاحْجُبْنَا عَنِ الْإِلْحَادِ فِي عَظَمَتِكَ.
Wa-uḥjubnā ʿani al-ilḥādi fī ʿaẓamatika.
and protect us from straying in our understanding of Your greatness.
وَيَا مَنْ لَا تَنْتَهِي مُدَّةُ مُلْكِهِ،
Wayā man lā tantahī muddatu mulkihi,
O You whose sovereignty never ends,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family,
وَأَعْتِقْ رِقَابَنَا مِنْ نَقِمَتِكَ.
Wa-aʿtiq riqābanā min naqimatika.
and set us free from Your retribution.
وَيَا مَنْ لَا تَفْنَى خَزَائِنُ رَحْمَتِهِ،
Wayā man lā tafnā khazāʾinu raḥmatihi,
O You whose treasures of mercy are never exhausted,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family,
وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا نَصِيبًا فِي رَحْمَتِكَ.
Wa-ijʿal lanā naṣīban fī raḥmatika.
and grant us a share of Your mercy.
وَيَا مَنْ تَنْقَطِعُ دُونَ رُؤْيَتِهِ الْأَبْصَارُ،
Wayā man tanqaṭiʿu dūna ruʾyatihi al-abṣāru,
O You whom no eyes can reach,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family,
وَأَدْنِنَا إِلَى قُرْبِكَ.
Wa-adninā ilā qurbika.
and draw us into Your nearness.
وَيَا مَنْ تَصْغُرُ عِنْدَ خَطَرِهِ الْأَخْطَارُ،
Wayā man taṣghuru ʿinda khaṭarihi al-akhṭāru,
O You before whose majesty all other greatness becomes small,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family,
وَكَرِّمْنَا عَلَيْكَ.
Wakarrimnā ʿalayka.
and grant us honour in Your sight.
وَيَا مَنْ تَظْهَرُ عِنْدَهُ بَوَاطِنُ الْأَخْبَارِ،
Wayā man taẓharu ʿindahu bawāṭinu al-akhbāri,
O You before whom the hidden truth of every matter lies open,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family,
وَلَا تَفْضَحْنَا لَدَيْكَ.
Walā tafḍaḥnā ladayka.
and do not expose us to disgrace before You.
اللَّهُمَّ أَغْنِنَا عَنْ هِبَةِ الْوَهَّابِينَ بِهِبَتِكَ،
Allāhumma aghninā ʿan hibati al-wahhābīna bihibatika,
O God, let Your giving make us independent of other givers,
وَاكْفِنَا وَحْشَةَ الْقَاطِعِينَ بِصِلَتِكَ،
Wa-ikfinā waḥshata al-qāṭiʿīna biṣilatika,
and let closeness to You relieve the loneliness of being abandoned,
حَتَّى لَا نَرْغَبَ إِلَى أَحَدٍ مَعَ بَذْلِكَ،
Ḥattā lā narghaba ilā aḥadin maʿa badhlika,
so that, while You give, we need turn to no one else,
وَلَا نَسْتَوْحِشَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ مَعَ فَضْلِكَ.
Walā nastawḥisha min aḥadin maʿa faḍlika.
and, while Your grace is with us, no one’s absence makes us desolate.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَكِدْ لَنَا وَلَا تَكِدْ عَلَيْنَا،
Wakid lanā walā takid ʿalaynā,
Turn Your devising in our favour, not against us;
وَامْكُرْ لَنَا وَلَا تَمْكُرْ بِنَا،
Wa-umkur lanā walā tamkur binā,
direct Your hidden plans for us, not against us;
وَأَدِلْ لَنَا وَلَا تُدِلْ مِنَّا.
Wa-adil lanā walā tudil minnā.
give us victory, and do not let victory be won over us.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَقِنَا مِنْكَ وَاحْفَظْنَا بِكَ،
Waqinā minka wa-iḥfaẓnā bika,
Protect us from Your punishment, and keep us safe through You.
وَاهْدِنَا إِلَيْكَ وَلَا تُبَاعِدْنَا عَنْكَ.
Wa-ihdinā ilayka walā tubāʿidnā ʿanka.
Guide us to You, and do not distance us from You.
إِنَّ مَنْ تَقِهِ يَسْلَمْ،
Inna man taqihi yaslam,
Whoever You protect is safe,
وَمَنْ تَهْدِهِ يَعْلَمْ،
Waman tahdihi yaʿlam,
whoever You guide gains understanding,
وَمَنْ تُقَرِّبْهُ إِلَيْكَ يَغْنَمْ.
Waman tuqarribhu ilayka yaghnam.
and whoever You draw near to Yourself receives true gain.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family,
وَاكْفِنَا حَدَّ نَوَائِبِ الزَّمَانِ،
Wa-ikfinā ḥadda nawāʾibi al-zamāni,
and spare us the sharp edge of life’s calamities,
وَشَرَّ مَصَائِدِ الشَّيْطَانِ،
Washarra maṣāʾidi al-shayṭāni,
the evil of Satan’s snares,
وَمَرَارَةَ صَوْلَةِ السُّلْطَانِ.
Wamarārata ṣawlati al-sulṭāni.
and the bitterness of a ruler’s assault.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّمَا يَكْتَفِي الْمُكْتَفُونَ بِفَضْلِ قُوَّتِكَ،
Allāhumma innamā yaktafī al-muktafūna bifaḍli quwwatika,
O God, those whose needs are met depend on the abundance of Your strength.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَاكْفِنَا.
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-ikfinā.
Bless Muhammad and his family, and meet our needs.
وَإِنَّمَا يُعْطِي الْمُعْطُونَ مِنْ فَضْلِ جِدَتِكَ،
Wa-innamā yuʿṭī al-muʿṭūna min faḍli jidatika,
Those who give can give only from the abundance of Your wealth.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَعْطِنَا.
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-aʿṭinā.
Bless Muhammad and his family, and give to us.
وَإِنَّمَا يَهْتَدِي الْمُهْتَدُونَ بِنُورِ وَجْهِكَ،
Wa-innamā yahtadī al-muhtadūna binūri wajhika,
Those who find guidance are guided only by the light of Your face.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَاهْدِنَا.
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-ihdinā.
Bless Muhammad and his family, and guide us.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ مَنْ وَالَيْتَ
Allāhumma innaka man wālayta
O God, whoever has Your friendship
لَمْ يَضْرُرْهُ خِذْلَانُ الْخَاذِلِينَ،
Lam yaḍrurhu khidhlānu al-khādhilīna,
cannot be harmed by the abandonment of those who forsake him.
وَمَنْ أَعْطَيْتَ لَمْ يَنْقُصْهُ مَنْعُ الْمَانِعِينَ،
Waman aʿṭayta lam yanquṣhu manʿu al-māniʿīna,
Whoever You give to loses nothing when others withhold.
وَمَنْ هَدَيْتَ لَمْ يُغْوِهِ إِضْلَالُ الْمُضِلِّينَ.
Waman hadayta lam yughwihi iḍlālu al-muḍillīna.
Whoever You guide cannot be led astray by those who mislead.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
Bless Muhammad and his family,
وَامْنَعْنَا بِعِزِّكَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ،
Wa-imnaʿnā biʿizzika min ʿibādika,
and shield us by Your might from harm by Your servants.
وَأَغْنِنَا عَنْ غَيْرِكَ بِإِرْفَادِكَ،
Wa-aghninā ʿan ghayrika biʾirfādika,
Through Your gifts, free us from dependence on anyone else,
وَاسْلُكْ بِنَا سَبِيلَ الْحَقِّ بِإِرْشَادِكَ.
Wa-usluk binā sabīla al-ḥaqqi biʾirshādika.
and through Your guidance lead us along the path of truth.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاجْعَلْ سَلَامَةَ قُلُوبِنَا فِي ذِكْرِ عَظَمَتِكَ،
Wa-ijʿal salāmata qulūbinā fī dhikri ʿaẓamatika,
Let our hearts find soundness in remembering Your greatness,
وَفَرَاغَ أَبْدَانِنَا فِي شُكْرِ نِعْمَتِكَ،
Wafarāgha abdāninā fī shukri niʿmatika,
our bodies find their free time in thanking You for Your blessings,
وَانْطِلَاقَ أَلْسِنَتِنَا فِي وَصْفِ مِنَّتِكَ.
Wa-inṭilāqa alsinatinā fī waṣfi minnatika.
and our tongues speak freely of Your generosity.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ دُعَاتِكَ الدَّاعِينَ إِلَيْكَ،
Wa-ijʿalnā min duʿātika al-dāʿīna ilayka,
Make us among Your callers who call people to You,
وَهُدَاتِكَ الدَّالِّينَ عَلَيْكَ،
Wahudātika al-dāllīna ʿalayka,
Your guides who point the way to You,
وَمِنْ خَاصَّتِكَ الْخَاصِّينَ لَدَيْكَ،
Wamin khāṣṣatika al-khāṣṣīna ladayka,
and those You have chosen for special closeness to You,
يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.
Yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.
O most merciful of all who show mercy.

Prayer 6
عِنْدَ الصَّبَاحِ وَالْمَسَاءِ
ʿinda al-ṣabāḥi wa-al-masāʾi
In the morning and evening
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي خَلَقَ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ بِقُوَّتِهِ،
Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī khalaqa al-layla wa-al-nahāra biquwwatihi,
Praise belongs to God, who created night and day through His strength,
وَمَيَّزَ بَيْنَهُمَا بِقُدْرَتِهِ،
Wamayyaza baynahumā biqudratihi,
distinguished them through His power,
وَجَعَلَ لِكُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا حَدًّا مَحْدُودًا وَأَمَدًا مَمْدُودًا،
Wajaʿala likulli wāḥidin minhumā ḥaddan maḥdūdan wa-amadan mamdūdan,
and gave each a defined boundary and an allotted span.
يُولِجُ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا فِي صَاحِبِهِ،
Yūliju kulla wāḥidin minhumā fī ṣāḥibihi,
He causes each to enter into the other
وَيُولِجُ صَاحِبَهُ فِيهِ،
Wayūliju ṣāḥibahu fīhi,
and its counterpart to enter into it,
بِتَقْدِيرٍ مِنْهُ لِلْعِبَادِ،
Bitaqdīrin minhu li-l-ʿibādi,
according to His measure for His servants,
فِيمَا يَغْذُوهُمْ بِهِ وَيُنْشِئُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ.
Fīmā yaghdhūhum bihi wayunshiʾuhum ʿalayhi.
providing what nourishes them and enables them to grow.
فَخَلَقَ لَهُمُ اللَّيْلَ لِيَسْكُنُوا فِيهِ،
Fakhalaqa lahumu al-layla liyaskunū fīhi,
He made the night so that they might rest in it
مِنْ حَرَكَاتِ التَّعَبِ وَنَهَضَاتِ النَّصَبِ،
Min ḥarakāti al-taʿabi wanahaḍāti al-naṣabi,
from tiring activity and exhausting effort.
وَجَعَلَهُ لِبَاسًا لِيَلْبَسُوا مِنْ رَاحَتِهِ وَمَنَامِهِ،
Wajaʿalahu libāsan liyalbasū min rāḥatihi wamanāmihi,
He made it a covering, so that they might wrap themselves in its rest and sleep,
فَيَكُونَ ذَلِكَ جَمَامًا وَقُوَّةً،
Fayakūna dhālika jamāman waquwwatan,
finding renewed energy and strength,
وَلِيَنَالُوا بِهِ لَذَّةً وَشَهْوَةً.
Waliyanālū bihi ladhdhatan washahwatan.
and enjoying pleasure and the fulfilment of desire.
وَخَلَقَ لَهُمُ النَّهَارَ مُبْصِرًا،
Wakhalaqa lahumu al-nahāra mubṣiran,
He made the day bright for them,
لِيَبْتَغُوا فِيهِ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ،
Liyabtaghū fīhi min faḍlihi,
so that they might seek His bounty in it,
وَلِيَتَسَبَّبُوا إِلَى رِزْقِهِ،
Waliyatasabbabū ilā rizqihi,
pursue the means to obtain His provision,
وَيَسْرَحُوا فِي أَرْضِهِ،
Wayasraḥū fī arḍihi,
and move freely through His earth,
طَلَبًا لِمَا فِيهِ نَيْلُ الْعَاجِلِ مِنْ دُنْيَاهُمْ،
Ṭalaban limā fīhi naylu al-ʿājili min dunyāhum,
seeking what brings benefit in their present life
وَدَرَكُ الْآجِلِ فِي أُخْرَاهُمْ.
Wadaraku al-ājili fī ukhrāhum.
and reward in the life to come.
بِكُلِّ ذَلِكَ يُصْلِحُ شَأْنَهُمْ وَيَبْلُو أَخْبَارَهُمْ،
Bikulli dhālika yuṣliḥu shaʾnahum wayablū akhbārahum,
Through all this He sets their affairs in order and tests their conduct,
وَيَنْظُرُ كَيْفَ هُمْ فِي أَوْقَاتِ طَاعَتِهِ،
Wayanẓuru kayfa hum fī awqāti ṭāʿatihi,
observing how they act at the times appointed for obedience,
وَمَنَازِلِ فُرُوضِهِ وَمَوَاقِعِ أَحْكَامِهِ،
Wamanāzili furūḍihi wamawāqiʿi aḥkāmihi,
in fulfilling their duties and wherever His rulings apply,
لِيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسَاءُوا بِمَا عَمِلُوا
Liyajziya alladhīna asāʾū bimā ʿamilū
so that He may repay those who did wrong for their deeds
وَيَجْزِيَ الَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا بِالْحُسْنَى.
Wayajziya alladhīna aḥsanū bi-al-ḥusnā.
and reward those who did good with what is best.
اللَّهُمَّ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى مَا فَلَقْتَ لَنَا مِنَ الْإِصْبَاحِ،
Allāhumma falaka al-ḥamdu ʿalā mā falaqta lanā mina al-iṣbāḥi,
O God, praise belongs to You for bringing dawn to us,
وَمَتَّعْتَنَا بِهِ مِنْ ضَوْءِ النَّهَارِ،
Wamattaʿtanā bihi min ḍawʾi al-nahāri,
allowing us to enjoy the light of day,
وَبَصَّرْتَنَا مِنْ مَطَالِبِ الْأَقْوَاتِ،
Wabaṣṣartanā min maṭālibi al-aqwāti,
showing us how to seek our daily sustenance,
وَوَقَيْتَنَا فِيهِ مِنْ طَوَارِقِ الْآفَاتِ.
Wawaqaytanā fīhi min ṭawāriqi al-āfāti.
and protecting us through it from sudden calamities.
أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَتِ الْأَشْيَاءُ كُلُّهَا بِجُمْلَتِهَا لَكَ،
Aṣbaḥnā wa-aṣbaḥati al-ashyāʾu kulluhā bijumlatihā laka,
We have entered this morning belonging to You, as has everything in its entirety:
سَمَاؤُهَا وَأَرْضُهَا،
Samāʾuhā wa-arḍuhā,
its heaven and its earth,
وَمَا بَثَثْتَ فِي كُلِّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا،
Wamā bathathta fī kulli wāḥidin minhumā,
and all You have scattered throughout them,
سَاكِنُهُ وَمُتَحَرِّكُهُ وَمُقِيمُهُ وَشَاخِصُهُ،
Sākinuhu wamutaḥarrikuhu wamuqīmuhu washākhiṣuhu,
all that is still or moving, staying or travelling,
وَمَا عَلَا فِي الْهَوَاءِ وَمَا كَنَّ تَحْتَ الثَّرَى.
Wamā ʿalā fī al-hawāʾi wamā kanna taḥta al-tharā.
all that rises into the air and all that lies hidden beneath the soil.
أَصْبَحْنَا فِي قَبْضَتِكَ،
Aṣbaḥnā fī qabḍatika,
This morning we are in Your grasp.
يَحْوِينَا مُلْكُكَ وَسُلْطَانُكَ،
Yaḥwīnā mulkuka wasulṭānuka,
Your sovereignty and authority encompass us,
وَتَضُمُّنَا مَشِيَّتُكَ،
Wataḍummunā mashiyyatuka,
and Your will enfolds us.
وَنَتَصَرَّفُ عَنْ أَمْرِكَ وَنَتَقَلَّبُ فِي تَدْبِيرِكَ.
Wanataṣarrafu ʿan amrika wanataqallabu fī tadbīrika.
We act under Your command and pass through the workings of Your care.
لَيْسَ لَنَا مِنَ الْأَمْرِ إِلَّا مَا قَضَيْتَ،
Laysa lanā mina al-amri illā mā qaḍayta,
Nothing is ours except what You have decreed,
وَلَا مِنَ الْخَيْرِ إِلَّا مَا أَعْطَيْتَ.
Walā mina al-khayri illā mā aʿṭayta.
and no good reaches us except what You have given.
وَهَذَا يَوْمٌ حَادِثٌ جَدِيدٌ،
Wa-hādhā yawmun ḥādithun jadīdun,
This is a fresh, newly arrived day,
وَهُوَ عَلَيْنَا شَاهِدٌ عَتِيدٌ.
Wahuwa ʿalaynā shāhidun ʿatīdun.
a witness standing ready to testify about us.
إِنْ أَحْسَنَّا وَدَّعَنَا بِحَمْدٍ،
In aḥsannā waddaʿanā biḥamdin,
If we do good, it bids us farewell with praise;
وَإِنْ أَسَأْنَا فَارَقَنَا بِذَمٍّ.
Wa-in asaʾnā fāraqanā bidhammin.
if we do wrong, it leaves us with blame.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family,
وَارْزُقْنَا حُسْنَ مُصَاحَبَتِهِ،
Wa-urzuqnā ḥusna muṣāḥabatihi,
and help us keep this day good company.
وَاعْصِمْنَا مِنْ سُوءِ مُفَارَقَتِهِ،
Wa-iʿṣimnā min sūʾi mufāraqatihi,
Protect us from parting badly with it
بِارْتِكَابِ جَرِيرَةٍ أَوِ اقْتِرَافِ صَغِيرَةٍ أَوْ كَبِيرَةٍ.
Birtikābi jarīratin awi iqtirāfi ṣaghīratin aw kabīratin.
by committing an offence or a sin, small or great.
وَأَجْزِلْ لَنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ،
Wa-ajzil lanā fīhi mina al-ḥasanāti,
Grant us abundant good deeds within it,
وَأَخْلِنَا فِيهِ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ.
Wa-akhlinā fīhi mina al-sayyiʾāti.
and keep us free of evil deeds.
وَامْلَأْ لَنَا مَا بَيْنَ طَرَفَيْهِ
Wa-imlaʾ lanā mā bayna ṭarafayhi
Fill its whole span for us
حَمْدًا وَشُكْرًا وَأَجْرًا وَذُخْرًا وَفَضْلًا وَإِحْسَانًا.
Ḥamdan washukran wa-ajran wadhukhran wafaḍlan wa-iḥsānan.
with praise, gratitude, reward, lasting treasure, grace, and goodness.
اللَّهُمَّ يَسِّرْ عَلَى الْكِرَامِ الْكَاتِبِينَ مَؤُونَتَنَا،
Allāhumma yassir ʿalā al-kirāmi al-kātibīna maʾūnatanā,
O God, make the noble recording angels’ work concerning us easy,
وَامْلَأْ لَنَا مِنْ حَسَنَاتِنَا صَحَائِفَنَا،
Wa-imlaʾ lanā min ḥasanātinā ṣaḥāʾifanā,
and fill our records with our good deeds.
وَلَا تُخْزِنَا عِنْدَهُمْ بِسُوءِ أَعْمَالِنَا.
Walā tukhzinā ʿindahum bisūʾi aʿmālinā.
Do not let our wrongdoing disgrace us before them.
اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ لَنَا فِي كُلِّ سَاعَةٍ مِنْ سَاعَاتِهِ
Allāhumma ijʿal lanā fī kulli sāʿatin min sāʿātihi
O God, in every hour of this day grant us
حَظًّا مِنْ عِبَادِكَ وَنَصِيبًا مِنْ شُكْرِكَ،
Ḥaẓẓan min ʿibādika wanaṣīban min shukrika,
a share among Your servants and a portion of gratitude to You,
وَشَاهِدَ صِدْقٍ مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِكَ.
Washāhida ṣidqin min malāʾikatika.
with a truthful witness among Your angels.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاحْفَظْنَا مِنْ بَيْنِ أَيْدِينَا وَمِنْ خَلْفِنَا،
Wa-iḥfaẓnā min bayni aydīnā wamin khalfinā,
Protect us from before us and behind us,
وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِنَا وَعَنْ شَمَائِلِنَا،
Waʿan aymāninā waʿan shamāʾilinā,
from our right and our left,
وَمِنْ جَمِيعِ نَوَاحِينَا،
Wamin jamīʿi nawāḥīnā,
and from every direction.
حِفْظًا عَاصِمًا مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ،
Ḥifẓan ʿāṣiman min maʿṣiyatika,
Let Your protection keep us from disobeying You,
هَادِيًا إِلَى طَاعَتِكَ مُسْتَعْمِلًا لِمَحَبَّتِكَ.
Hādiyan ilā ṭāʿatika mustaʿmilan limaḥabbatika.
guide us to obedience, and engage us in what You love.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَوَفِّقْنَا فِي يَوْمِنَا هَذَا وَلَيْلَتِنَا هَذِهِ
Wawaffiqnā fī yawminā hādhā walaylatinā hādhihi
Help us, this day and this night,
وَفِي جَمِيعِ أَيَّامِنَا،
Wafī jamīʿi ayyāminā,
and throughout all our days,
لِاسْتِعْمَالِ الْخَيْرِ وَهِجْرَانِ الشَّرِّ،
Listiʿmāli al-khayri wahijrāni al-sharri,
to practise good and leave evil behind,
وَشُكْرِ النِّعَمِ وَاتِّبَاعِ السُّنَنِ،
Washukri al-niʿami wa-ittibāʿi al-sunani,
to thank You for blessings and follow the prophetic ways,
وَمُجَانَبَةِ الْبِدَعِ،
Wamujānabati al-bidaʿi,
to avoid innovations in religion,
وَالْأَمْرِ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَالنَّهْيِ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ،
Wa-al-amri bi-al-maʿrūfi wa-al-nahyi ʿani al-munkari,
to encourage what is right and forbid what is wrong,
وَحِيَاطَةِ الْإِسْلَامِ،
Waḥiyāṭati al-islāmi,
to safeguard Islam,
وَانْتِقَاصِ الْبَاطِلِ وَإِذْلَالِهِ،
Wa-intiqāṣi al-bāṭili wa-idhlālihi,
to diminish falsehood and bring it low,
وَنُصْرَةِ الْحَقِّ وَإِعْزَازِهِ،
Wanuṣrati al-ḥaqqi wa-iʿzāzihi,
to support truth and uphold its strength,
وَإِرْشَادِ الضَّالِّ وَمُعَاوَنَةِ الضَّعِيفِ،
Wa-irshādi al-ḍālli wamuʿāwanati al-ḍaʿīfi,
to guide those who are lost and help those who are weak,
وَإِدْرَاكِ اللَّهِيفِ.
Wa-idrāki al-lahīfi.
and to come to the aid of those in distress.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاجْعَلْهُ أَيْمَنَ يَوْمٍ عَهِدْنَاهُ،
Wa-ijʿalhu aymana yawmin ʿahidnāhu,
Make this the most blessed day we have known,
وَأَفْضَلَ صَاحِبٍ صَحِبْنَاهُ،
Wa-afḍala ṣāḥibin ṣaḥibnāhu,
the finest companion we have accompanied,
وَخَيْرَ وَقْتٍ ظَلِلْنَا فِيهِ.
Wakhayra waqtin ẓalilnā fīhi.
and the best time through which we have lived.
وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَرْضَى مَنْ مَرَّ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ
Wa-ijʿalnā min arḍā man marra ʿalayhi al-laylu wa-al-nahāru
Make us among those most pleasing to You as night and day pass over them,
مِنْ جُمْلَةِ خَلْقِكَ،
Min jumlati khalqika,
among all Your creation,
وَأَشْكَرَهُمْ لِمَا أَوْلَيْتَ مِنْ نِعَمِكَ،
Wa-ashkarahum limā awlayta min niʿamika,
the most grateful for the blessings You have bestowed,
وَأَقْوَمَهُمْ بِمَا شَرَعْتَ مِنْ شَرَائِعِكَ،
Wa-aqwamahum bimā sharaʿta min sharāʾiʿika,
the most steadfast in upholding Your laws,
وَأَوْقَفَهُمْ عَمَّا حَذَّرْتَ مِنْ نَهْيِكَ.
Wa-awqafahum ʿammā ḥadhdharta min nahyika.
and the most restrained from what You have warned us against.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُشْهِدُكَ وَكَفَى بِكَ شَهِيدًا،
Allāhumma innī ushhiduka wakafā bika shahīdan,
O God, I call You to witness, and You are sufficient as a witness.
وَأُشْهِدُ سَمَاءَكَ وَأَرْضَكَ،
Wa-ushhidu samāʾaka wa-arḍaka,
I call Your heaven and Your earth to witness,
وَمَنْ أَسْكَنْتَهُمَا مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِكَ وَسَائِرِ خَلْقِكَ،
Waman askantahumā min malāʾikatika wasāʾiri khalqika,
and the angels and other creatures You have placed within them,
فِي يَوْمِي هَذَا وَسَاعَتِي هَذِهِ،
Fī yawmī hādhā wasāʿatī hādhihi,
on this day, at this hour,
وَلَيْلَتِي هَذِهِ وَمُسْتَقَرِّي هَذَا،
Walaylatī hādhihi wamustaqarrī hādhā,
on this night, and in this place where I stand,
أَنِّي أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ،
Annī ashhadu annaka anta Allāhu alladhī lā ilāha illā anta,
that I bear witness: You are God; there is no god but You.
قَائِمٌ بِالْقِسْطِ عَدْلٌ فِي الْحُكْمِ،
Qāʾimun bi-al-qisṭi ʿadlun fī al-ḥukmi,
You uphold justice and judge with fairness,
رَؤُوفٌ بِالْعِبَادِ مَالِكُ الْمُلْكِ رَحِيمٌ بِالْخَلْقِ،
Raʾūfun bi-al-ʿibādi māliku al-mulki raḥīmun bi-al-khalqi,
gentle towards Your servants, Master of all sovereignty, merciful to creation.
وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ وَخِيَرَتُكَ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ.
Wa-anna muḥammadan ʿabduka warasūluka wakhiyaratuka min khalqika.
And Muhammad is Your servant and messenger, Your chosen one among creation.
حَمَّلْتَهُ رِسَالَتَكَ فَأَدَّاهَا،
Ḥammaltahu risālataka fa-addāhā,
You entrusted him with Your message, and he conveyed it.
وَأَمَرْتَهُ بِالنُّصْحِ لِأُمَّتِهِ فَنَصَحَ لَهَا.
Wa-amartahu bi-al-nuṣḥi liʾummatihi fanaṣaḥa lahā.
You commanded him to care sincerely for his community, and he did so.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family
أَكْثَرَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ،
Akthara mā ṣallayta ʿalā aḥadin min khalqika,
more abundantly than You have blessed any of Your creatures.
وَآتِهِ عَنَّا أَفْضَلَ مَا آتَيْتَ أَحَدًا مِنْ عِبَادِكَ،
Wa-ātihi ʿannā afḍala mā ātayta aḥadan min ʿibādika,
On our behalf, grant him the best You have granted any of Your servants,
وَاجْزِهِ عَنَّا أَفْضَلَ وَأَكْرَمَ مَا جَزَيْتَ
Wa-ijzihi ʿannā afḍala wa-akrama mā jazayta
and reward him for us with the best and most honoured reward You have given
أَحَدًا مِنْ أَنْبِيَائِكَ عَنْ أُمَّتِهِ.
Aḥadan min anbiyāʾika ʿan ummatihi.
any of Your prophets on behalf of his community.
إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْمَنَّانُ بِالْجَسِيمِ الْغَافِرُ لِلْعَظِيمِ،
Innaka anta al-mannānu bi-al-jasīmi al-ghāfiru li-l-ʿaẓīmi,
You bestow immense gifts and forgive immense sins,
وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ مِنْ كُلِّ رَحِيمٍ.
Wa-anta arḥamu min kulli raḥīmin.
and You are more merciful than anyone who shows mercy.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi
Bless Muhammad and his family,
الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ الْأَخْيَارِ الْأَنْجَبِينَ.
Al-ṭayyibīna al-ṭāhirīna al-akhyāri al-anjabīna.
who are good, pure, virtuous, and noble.

Prayer 7
إِذَا عَرَضَتْ لَهُ مُهِمَّةٌ أَوْ نَزَلَتْ بِهِ مُلِمَّةٌ وَعِنْدَ الْكَرْبِ
Idhā ʿaraḍat lahu muhimmatun aw nazalat bihi mulimmatun waʿinda al-karbi
When faced with a pressing concern, a calamity, or distress
يَا مَنْ تُحَلُّ بِهِ عُقَدُ الْمَكَارِهِ،
Yā man tuḥallu bihi ʿuqadu al-makārihi,
O You through whom the knots of hardship are untied,
وَيَا مَنْ يُفْثَأُ بِهِ حَدُّ الشَّدَائِدِ،
Wayā man yufthaʾu bihi ḥaddu al-shadāʾidi,
through whom the sharpness of adversity is blunted,
وَيَا مَنْ يُلْتَمَسُ مِنْهُ الْمَخْرَجُ إِلَى رَوْحِ الْفَرَجِ،
Wayā man yultamasu minhu al-makhraju ilā rawḥi al-faraji,
from whom we seek a way out into the comfort of relief,
ذَلَّتْ لِقُدْرَتِكَ الصِّعَابُ،
Dhallat liqudratika al-ṣiʿābu,
difficulties yield to Your power,
وَتَسَبَّبَتْ بِلُطْفِكَ الْأَسْبَابُ،
Watasabbabat biluṭfika al-asbābu,
and through Your subtle kindness the means of fulfilment take shape.
وَجَرَى بِقُدْرَتِكَ الْقَضَاءُ،
Wajarā biqudratika al-qaḍāʾu,
Your decree takes effect through Your power,
وَمَضَتْ عَلَى إِرَادَتِكَ الْأَشْيَاءُ،
Wamaḍat ʿalā irādatika al-ashyāʾu,
and all things proceed according to Your will.
فَهِيَ بِمَشِيَّتِكَ دُونَ قَوْلِكَ مُؤْتَمِرَةٌ،
Fahiya bimashiyyatika dūna qawlika muʾtamiratun,
By Your will they obey, without a word from You,
وَبِإِرَادَتِكَ دُونَ نَهْيِكَ مُنْزَجِرَةٌ.
Wabiʾirādatika dūna nahyika munzajiratun.
and by Your intention they hold back, without a spoken prohibition.
أَنْتَ الْمَدْعُوُّ لِلْمُهِمَّاتِ،
Anta al-madʿuwwu li-l-muhimmāti,
You are the One called upon in pressing concerns,
وَأَنْتَ الْمَفْزَعُ فِي الْمُلِمَّاتِ.
Wa-anta al-mafzaʿu fī al-mulimmāti.
the refuge in calamity.
لَا يَنْدَفِعُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا مَا دَفَعْتَ،
Lā yandafiʿu minhā illā mā dafaʿta,
None is averted unless You avert it,
وَلَا يَنْكَشِفُ مِنْهَا إِلَّا مَا كَشَفْتَ.
Walā yankashifu minhā illā mā kashafta.
and none is lifted unless You lift it.
وَقَدْ نَزَلَ بِي يَا رَبِّ مَا قَدْ تَكَأَّدَنِي ثِقْلُهُ،
Waqad nazala bī yā rabbi mā qad takaʾʾadanī thiqluhu,
My Lord, something has come upon me whose weight overwhelms me;
وَأَلَمَّ بِي مَا قَدْ بَهَظَنِي حَمْلُهُ،
Wa-alamma bī mā qad bahaẓanī ḥamluhu,
something has overtaken me whose burden crushes me.
وَبِقُدْرَتِكَ أَوْرَدْتَهُ عَلَيَّ،
Wabiqudratika awradtahu ʿalayya,
Through Your power You have brought it upon me,
وَبِسُلْطَانِكَ وَجَّهْتَهُ إِلَيَّ.
Wabisulṭānika wajjahtahu ilayya.
and through Your authority You have directed it towards me.
فَلَا مُصْدِرَ لِمَا أَوْرَدْتَ،
Falā muṣdira limā awradta,
No one can send away what You have brought,
وَلَا صَارِفَ لِمَا وَجَّهْتَ،
Walā ṣārifa limā wajjahta,
or turn aside what You have directed.
وَلَا فَاتِحَ لِمَا أَغْلَقْتَ،
Walā fātiḥa limā aghlaqta,
No one can open what You have closed,
وَلَا مُغْلِقَ لِمَا فَتَحْتَ،
Walā mughliqa limā fataḥta,
or close what You have opened.
وَلَا مُيَسِّرَ لِمَا عَسَّرْتَ،
Walā muyassira limā ʿassarta,
No one can make easy what You have made difficult,
وَلَا نَاصِرَ لِمَنْ خَذَلْتَ.
Walā nāṣira liman khadhalta.
or help someone You have left without support.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
Bless Muhammad and his family,
وَافْتَحْ لِي يَا رَبِّ بَابَ الْفَرَجِ بِطَوْلِكَ،
Wa-iftaḥ lī yā rabbi bāba al-faraji biṭawlika,
and, my Lord, open the door of relief for me through Your generosity.
وَاكْسِرْ عَنِّي سُلْطَانَ الْهَمِّ بِحَوْلِكَ،
Wa-iksir ʿannī sulṭāna al-hammi biḥawlika,
Through Your power, break the hold of anxiety over me.
وَأَنِلْنِي حُسْنَ النَّظَرِ فِيمَا شَكَوْتُ،
Wa-anilnī ḥusna al-naẓari fīmā shakawtu,
Grant me Your gracious care in what I have brought before You,
وَأَذِقْنِي حَلَاوَةَ الصُّنْعِ فِيمَا سَأَلْتُ.
Wa-adhiqnī ḥalāwata al-ṣunʿi fīmā saʾaltu.
and let me taste the sweetness of Your response to what I have asked.
وَهَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ رَحْمَةً وَفَرَجًا هَنِيئًا،
Wahab lī min ladunka raḥmatan wafarajan hanīʾan,
Grant me mercy from Yourself and relief that brings peace,
وَاجْعَلْ لِي مِنْ عِنْدِكَ مَخْرَجًا وَحِيًّا.
Wa-ijʿal lī min ʿindika makhrajan waḥiyyan.
and provide me a swift way out.
وَلَا تَشْغَلْنِي بِالِاهْتِمَامِ عَنْ تَعَاهُدِ فُرُوضِكَ
Walā tashghalnī bi-al-ihtimāmi ʿan taʿāhudi furūḍika
Do not let worry distract me from attending to the duties You require
وَاسْتِعْمَالِ سُنَّتِكَ.
Wa-istiʿmāli sunnatika.
and following the way You have established.
فَقَدْ ضِقْتُ لِمَا نَزَلَ بِي يَا رَبِّ ذَرْعًا،
Faqad ḍiqtu limā nazala bī yā rabbi dharʿan,
My Lord, I can no longer bear what has come upon me,
وَامْتَلَأْتُ بِحَمْلِ مَا حَدَثَ عَلَيَّ هَمًّا.
Wa-imtalaʾtu biḥamli mā ḥadatha ʿalayya hamman.
and the burden of what has happened has filled me with anxiety.
وَأَنْتَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى كَشْفِ مَا مُنِيتُ بِهِ،
Wa-anta al-qādiru ʿalā kashfi mā munītu bihi,
You have the power to lift what has afflicted me
وَدَفْعِ مَا وَقَعْتُ فِيهِ.
Wadafʿi mā waqaʿtu fīhi.
and avert the trouble into which I have fallen.
فَافْعَلْ بِي ذَلِكَ وَإِنْ لَمْ أَسْتَوْجِبْهُ مِنْكَ،
Fa-ifʿal bī dhālika wa-in lam astawjibhu minka,
Do this for me, even though I have not earned it from You,
يَا ذَا الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ.
Yā dhā al-ʿarshi al-ʿaẓīmi.
O Lord of the mighty Throne.
الدُّعَاءُ ٨
Al-duʿāʾu 8
Prayer 8
فِي الِاسْتِعَاذَةِ مِنَ الْمَكَارِهِ
Fī al-istiʿādhati mina al-makārihi
Seeking refuge from adversity,
وَسَيِّئِ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَمَذَامِّ الْأَفْعَالِ
Wasayyiʾi al-akhlāqi wamadhāmmi al-afʿāli
bad character, and blameworthy actions
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ هَيَجَانِ الْحِرْصِ،
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min hayajāni al-ḥirṣi,
O God, I seek refuge in You from surging greed,
وَسَوْرَةِ الْغَضَبِ وَغَلَبَةِ الْحَسَدِ،
Wasawrati al-ghaḍabi waghalabati al-ḥasadi,
the rush of anger and the domination of envy,
وَضَعْفِ الصَّبْرِ وَقِلَّةِ الْقَنَاعَةِ،
Waḍaʿfi al-ṣabri waqillati al-qanāʿati,
failing patience and a lack of contentment,
وَشَكَاسَةِ الْخُلُقِ وَإِلْحَاحِ الشَّهْوَةِ،
Washakāsati al-khuluqi wa-ilḥāḥi al-shahwati,
a harsh disposition and insistent desire,
وَمَلَكَةِ الْحَمِيَّةِ وَمُتَابَعَةِ الْهَوَى،
Wamalakati al-ḥamiyyati wamutābaʿati al-hawā,
the grip of pride and following my own whims,
وَمُخَالَفَةِ الْهُدَى وَسِنَةِ الْغَفْلَةِ،
Wamukhālafati al-hudā wasinati al-ghaflati,
turning from guidance and the drowsiness of heedlessness,
وَتَعَاطِي الْكُلْفَةِ،
Wataʿāṭī al-kulfati,
taking on needless burdens,
وَإِيثَارِ الْبَاطِلِ عَلَى الْحَقِّ،
Wa-īthāri al-bāṭili ʿalā al-ḥaqqi,
choosing falsehood over truth,
وَالْإِصْرَارِ عَلَى الْمَأْثَمِ،
Wa-al-iṣrāri ʿalā al-maʾthami,
persisting in wrongdoing,
وَاسْتِصْغَارِ الْمَعْصِيَةِ وَاسْتِكْثَارِ الطَّاعَةِ،
Wa-istiṣghāri al-maʿṣiyati wa-istikthāri al-ṭāʿati,
treating disobedience as small and my obedience as great,
وَمُبَاهَاةِ الْمُكْثِرِينَ وَالْإِزْرَاءِ بِالْمُقِلِّينَ،
Wamubāhāti al-mukthirīna wa-al-izrāʾi bi-al-muqillīna,
competing in displays of wealth and looking down on those who have little,
وَسُوءِ الْوِلَايَةِ لِمَنْ تَحْتَ أَيْدِينَا،
Wasūʾi al-wilāyati liman taḥta aydīnā,
mistreating those in our care,
وَتَرْكِ الشُّكْرِ لِمَنِ اصْطَنَعَ الْعَارِفَةَ عِنْدَنَا،
Watarki al-shukri limani iṣṭanaʿa al-ʿārifata ʿindanā,
and failing to thank those who have shown us kindness.
أَوْ أَنْ نَعْضُدَ ظَالِمًا أَوْ نَخْذُلَ مَلْهُوفًا،
Aw an naʿḍuda ẓāliman aw nakhdhula malhūfan,
Protect us from supporting an oppressor or abandoning someone in distress,
أَوْ نَرُومَ مَا لَيْسَ لَنَا بِحَقٍّ،
Aw narūma mā laysa lanā biḥaqqin,
seeking what is not rightfully ours,
أَوْ نَقُولَ فِي الْعِلْمِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ.
Aw naqūla fī al-ʿilmi bighayri ʿilmin.
or speaking about knowledge without knowing.
وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ نَنْطَوِيَ عَلَى غِشِّ أَحَدٍ،
Wanaʿūdhu bika an nanṭawiya ʿalā ghishshi aḥadin,
We seek refuge in You from concealing deceit towards anyone,
وَأَنْ نُعْجَبَ بِأَعْمَالِنَا وَنَمُدَّ فِي آمَالِنَا.
Wa-an nuʿjaba biʾaʿmālinā wanamudda fī āmālinā.
from admiring our own deeds and stretching our hopes far into the future.
وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ سُوءِ السَّرِيرَةِ،
Wanaʿūdhu bika min sūʾi al-sarīrati,
We seek refuge in You from corrupt intentions
وَاحْتِقَارِ الصَّغِيرَةِ،
Wa-iḥtiqāri al-ṣaghīrati,
and dismissing a small sin as unimportant,
وَأَنْ يَسْتَحْوِذَ عَلَيْنَا الشَّيْطَانُ،
Wa-an yastaḥwidha ʿalaynā al-shayṭānu,
from Satan taking control of us,
أَوْ يَنْكُبَنَا الزَّمَانُ،
Aw yankubanā al-zamānu,
from being struck by life’s misfortunes,
أَوْ يَتَهَضَّمَنَا السُّلْطَانُ.
Aw yatahaḍḍamanā al-sulṭānu.
and from a ruler’s oppression.
وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ تَنَاوُلِ الْإِسْرَافِ،
Wanaʿūdhu bika min tanāwuli al-isrāfi,
We seek refuge in You from falling into excess
وَمِنْ فِقْدَانِ الْكَفَافِ.
Wamin fiqdāni al-kafāfi.
and from lacking enough to meet our needs.
وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَمَاتَةِ الْأَعْدَاءِ،
Wanaʿūdhu bika min shamātati al-aʿdāʾi,
We seek refuge in You from enemies gloating over our suffering,
وَمِنَ الْفَقْرِ إِلَى الْأَكْفَاءِ،
Wamina al-faqri ilā al-akfāʾi,
from having to depend on our equals,
وَمِنْ مَعِيشَةٍ فِي شِدَّةٍ وَمَيْتَةٍ عَلَى غَيْرِ عُدَّةٍ.
Wamin maʿīshatin fī shiddatin wamaytatin ʿalā ghayri ʿuddatin.
from a life of hardship and a death for which we are unprepared.
وَنَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْحَسْرَةِ الْعُظْمَى،
Wanaʿūdhu bika mina al-ḥasrati al-ʿuẓmā,
We seek refuge in You from the greatest remorse,
وَالْمُصِيبَةِ الْكُبْرَى وَأَشْقَى الشَّقَاءِ،
Wa-al-muṣībati al-kubrā wa-ashqā al-shaqāʾi,
the greatest calamity and the deepest misery,
وَسُوءِ الْمَآبِ وَحِرْمَانِ الثَّوَابِ،
Wasūʾi al-maʾābi waḥirmāni al-thawābi,
an evil return and the loss of reward,
وَحُلُولِ الْعِقَابِ.
Waḥulūli al-ʿiqābi.
and from punishment descending upon us.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْ كُلِّ ذَلِكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ،
Wa-aʿidhnī min kulli dhālika biraḥmatika,
By Your mercy, grant me refuge from all of this,
وَجَمِيعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ،
Wajamīʿa al-muʾminīna wa-al-muʾmināti,
and grant it to all believing men and women,
يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.
Yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.
O most merciful of all who show mercy.
الدُّعَاءُ ٩
Al-duʿāʾu 9
Prayer 9
فِي الِاشْتِيَاقِ إِلَى طَلَبِ الْمَغْفِرَةِ مِنَ اللَّهِ جَلَّ جَلَالُهُ
Fī al-ishtiyāqi ilā ṭalabi al-maghfirati mina Allāhi jalla jalāluhu
In longing to seek forgiveness from God, glorious in His majesty
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَصَيِّرْنَا إِلَى مَحْبُوبِكَ مِنَ التَّوْبَةِ،
Waṣayyirnā ilā maḥbūbika mina al-tawbati,
Bring us to the repentance that You love,
وَأَزِلْنَا عَنْ مَكْرُوهِكَ مِنَ الْإِصْرَارِ.
Wa-azilnā ʿan makrūhika mina al-iṣrāri.
and turn us away from persisting in sin, which You dislike.
اللَّهُمَّ وَمَتَى وَقَفْنَا بَيْنَ نَقْصَيْنِ فِي دِينٍ أَوْ دُنْيَا،
Allāhumma wamatā waqafnā bayna naqṣayni fī dīnin aw dunyā,
O God, whenever we must face a loss in either our religion or our worldly life,
فَأَوْقِعِ النَّقْصَ بِأَسْرَعِهِمَا فَنَاءً،
Fa-awqiʿi al-naqṣa biʾasraʿihimā fanāʾan,
let the loss fall on what passes away sooner,
وَاجْعَلِ التَّوْبَةَ فِي أَطْوَلِهِمَا بَقَاءً.
Wa-ijʿali al-tawbata fī aṭwalihimā baqāʾan.
and grant repentance in what endures longer.
وَإِذَا هَمَمْنَا بِهَمَّيْنِ يُرْضِيكَ أَحَدُهُمَا عَنَّا
Wa-idhā hamamnā bihammayni yurḍīka aḥaduhumā ʿannā
When we consider two courses, one of which would please You
وَيُسْخِطُكَ الْآخَرُ عَلَيْنَا،
Wayuskhiṭuka al-ākharu ʿalaynā,
and the other bring Your displeasure upon us,
فَمِلْ بِنَا إِلَى مَا يُرْضِيكَ عَنَّا،
Famil binā ilā mā yurḍīka ʿannā,
turn us towards what pleases You,
وَأَوْهِنْ قُوَّتَنَا عَمَّا يُسْخِطُكَ عَلَيْنَا.
Wa-awhin quwwatanā ʿammā yuskhiṭuka ʿalaynā.
and weaken our ability to do what displeases You.
وَلَا تُخَلِّ فِي ذَلِكَ بَيْنَ نُفُوسِنَا وَاخْتِيَارِهَا،
Walā tukhalli fī dhālika bayna nufūsinā wa-ikhtiyārihā,
Do not leave our souls to make their own choice in this,
فَإِنَّهَا مُخْتَارَةٌ لِلْبَاطِلِ إِلَّا مَا وَفَّقْتَ،
Fa-innahā mukhtāratun li-l-bāṭili illā mā waffaqta,
for they choose falsehood unless You guide them to what is right,
أَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمْتَ.
Ammāratun bi-al-sūʾi illā mā raḥimta.
and urge us towards evil unless You show mercy.
اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنَّكَ مِنَ الضَّعْفِ خَلَقْتَنَا،
Allāhumma wa-innaka mina al-ḍaʿfi khalaqtanā,
O God, You created us from weakness,
وَعَلَى الْوَهْنِ بَنَيْتَنَا،
Waʿalā al-wahni banaytanā,
formed us upon frailty,
وَمِنْ مَاءٍ مَهِينٍ ابْتَدَأْتَنَا،
Wamin māʾin mahīnin ibtadaʾtanā,
and gave us our beginning in a lowly fluid.
فَلَا حَوْلَ لَنَا إِلَّا بِقُوَّتِكَ،
Falā ḥawla lanā illā biquwwatika,
We have no ability to act except through Your strength,
وَلَا قُوَّةَ لَنَا إِلَّا بِعَوْنِكَ.
Walā quwwata lanā illā biʿawnika.
and no strength except through Your help.
فَأَيِّدْنَا بِتَوْفِيقِكَ وَسَدِّدْنَا بِتَسْدِيدِكَ،
Fa-ayyidnā bitawfīqika wasaddidnā bitasdīdika,
Support us with Your enabling grace and set us firmly on the right course.
وَأَعْمِ أَبْصَارَ قُلُوبِنَا عَمَّا خَالَفَ مَحَبَّتَكَ،
Wa-aʿmi abṣāra qulūbinā ʿammā khālafa maḥabbataka,
Turn the eyes of our hearts away from whatever opposes Your love,
وَلَا تَجْعَلْ لِشَيْءٍ مِنْ جَوَارِحِنَا نُفُوذًا فِي مَعْصِيَتِكَ.
Walā tajʿal lishayʾin min jawāriḥinā nufūdhan fī maʿṣiyatika.
and give none of our limbs the means to carry us into disobedience.
اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاجْعَلْ هَمَسَاتِ قُلُوبِنَا وَحَرَكَاتِ أَعْضَائِنَا،
Wa-ijʿal hamasāti qulūbinā waḥarakāti aʿḍāʾinā,
Let the whispers of our hearts and the movements of our limbs,
وَلَمَحَاتِ أَعْيُنِنَا وَلَهَجَاتِ أَلْسِنَتِنَا،
Walamaḥāti aʿyuninā walahajāti alsinatinā,
the glances of our eyes and the words of our tongues,
فِي مُوجِبَاتِ ثَوَابِكَ،
Fī mūjibāti thawābika,
be devoted to deeds that merit Your reward,
حَتَّى لَا تَفُوتَنَا حَسَنَةٌ نَسْتَحِقُّ بِهَا جَزَاءَكَ،
Ḥattā lā tafūtanā ḥasanatun nastaḥiqqu bihā jazāʾaka,
so that we miss no good deed through which we may deserve Your recompense,
وَلَا تَبْقَى لَنَا سَيِّئَةٌ نَسْتَوْجِبُ بِهَا عِقَابَكَ.
Walā tabqā lanā sayyiʾatun nastawjibu bihā ʿiqābaka.
and no evil deed remains for which we would deserve Your punishment.
الدُّعَاءُ ١٠
Al-duʿāʾu 10
Prayer 10
فِي اللَّجَإِ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى
Fī al-lajaʾi ilā Allāhi taʿālā
Taking refuge in God Most High
اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ تَشَأْ تَعْفُ عَنَّا فَبِفَضْلِكَ،
Allāhumma in tashaʾ taʿfu ʿannā fabifaḍlika,
O God, if You choose to pardon us, it is through Your grace;
وَإِنْ تَشَأْ تُعَذِّبْنَا فَبِعَدْلِكَ.
Wa-in tashaʾ tuʿadhdhibnā fabiʿadlika.
if You choose to punish us, it is through Your justice.
فَسَهِّلْ لَنَا عَفْوَكَ بِمَنِّكَ،
Fasahhil lanā ʿafwaka bimannika,
In Your generosity, make Your pardon easy for us to receive,
وَأَجِرْنَا مِنْ عَذَابِكَ بِتَجَاوُزِكَ.
Wa-ajirnā min ʿadhābika bitajāwuzika.
and through Your forgiveness protect us from Your punishment.
فَإِنَّهُ لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا بِعَدْلِكَ،
Fa-innahu lā ṭāqata lanā biʿadlika,
We have no strength to bear Your justice,
وَلَا نَجَاةَ لِأَحَدٍ مِنَّا دُونَ عَفْوِكَ.
Walā najāta liʾaḥadin minnā dūna ʿafwika.
and none of us can be saved without Your pardon.
يَا غَنِيَّ الْأَغْنِيَاءِ،
Yā ghaniyya al-aghniyāʾi,
O You whose riches surpass all riches,
هَا نَحْنُ عِبَادُكَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ،
Hā naḥnu ʿibāduka bayna yadayka,
here we are, Your servants, before You,
وَأَنَا أَفْقَرُ الْفُقَرَاءِ إِلَيْكَ.
Wa-anā afqaru al-fuqarāʾi ilayka.
and I am the poorest of the poor in my need of You.
فَاجْبُرْ فَاقَتَنَا بِوُسْعِكَ،
Fa-ujbur fāqatanā biwusʿika,
Remedy our need through Your abundance,
وَلَا تَقْطَعْ رَجَاءَنَا بِمَنْعِكَ،
Walā taqṭaʿ rajāʾanā bimanʿika,
and do not cut off our hope by withholding from us,
فَتَكُونَ قَدْ أَشْقَيْتَ مَنِ اسْتَسْعَدَ بِكَ،
Fatakūna qad ashqayta mani istasʿada bika,
leaving wretched those who seek happiness through You
وَحَرَمْتَ مَنِ اسْتَرْفَدَ فَضْلَكَ.
Waḥaramta mani istarfada faḍlaka.
and depriving those who seek the help of Your grace.
فَإِلَى مَنْ حِينَئِذٍ مُنْقَلَبُنَا عَنْكَ،
Fa-ilā man ḥīnaʾidhin munqalabunā ʿanka,
To whom could we turn then, away from You?
وَإِلَى أَيْنَ مَذْهَبُنَا عَنْ بَابِكَ؟
Wa-ilā ayna madhhabunā ʿan bābika?
Where could we go after leaving Your door?
سُبْحَانَكَ نَحْنُ الْمُضْطَرُّونَ الَّذِينَ أَوْجَبْتَ إِجَابَتَهُمْ،
Subḥānaka naḥnu al-muḍṭarrūna alladhīna awjabta ijābatahum,
Glory be to You! We are the desperate whose prayers You have pledged to answer,
وَأَهْلُ السُّوءِ الَّذِينَ وَعَدْتَ الْكَشْفَ عَنْهُمْ.
Wa-ahlu al-sūʾi alladhīna waʿadta al-kashfa ʿanhum.
the afflicted whose suffering You have promised to remove.
وَأَشْبَهُ الْأَشْيَاءِ بِمَشِيَّتِكَ،
Wa-ashbahu al-ashyāʾi bimashiyyatika,
What accords most closely with Your will,
وَأَوْلَى الْأُمُورِ بِكَ فِي عَظَمَتِكَ،
Wa-awlā al-umūri bika fī ʿaẓamatika,
and is most fitting to Your greatness,
رَحْمَةُ مَنِ اسْتَرْحَمَكَ،
Raḥmatu mani istarḥamaka,
is mercy towards those who ask You for mercy
وَغَوْثُ مَنِ اسْتَغَاثَ بِكَ.
Waghawthu mani istaghātha bika.
and aid for those who call upon You for help.
فَارْحَمْ تَضَرُّعَنَا إِلَيْكَ،
Fa-irḥam taḍarruʿanā ilayka,
Have mercy on our humble pleading,
وَأَغْنِنَا إِذْ طَرَحْنَا أَنْفُسَنَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ.
Wa-aghninā idh ṭaraḥnā anfusanā bayna yadayka.
and meet our needs as we cast ourselves before You.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ قَدْ شَمِتَ بِنَا
Allāhumma inna al-shayṭāna qad shamita binā
O God, Satan gloated over us
إِذْ شَايَعْنَاهُ عَلَى مَعْصِيَتِكَ.
Idh shāyaʿnāhu ʿalā maʿṣiyatika.
when we followed him in disobeying You.
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
Bless Muhammad and his family,
وَلَا تُشْمِتْهُ بِنَا بَعْدَ تَرْكِنَا إِيَّاهُ لَكَ،
Walā tushmit-hu binā baʿda tarkinā iyyāhu laka,
and do not let him gloat over us now that we have left him for You
وَرَغْبَتِنَا عَنْهُ إِلَيْكَ.
Waraghbatinā ʿanhu ilayka.
and turned away from him in longing for You.
الدُّعَاءُ ١١

Prayer 11
بِخَوَاتِمِ الْخَيْرِ
Bikhawātimi al-khayri
Asking for a good ending
يَا مَنْ ذِكْرُهُ شَرَفٌ لِلذَّاكِرِينَ،
Yā man dhikruhu sharafun li-l-dhākirīna,
O You whose remembrance honours those who remember,
وَيَا مَنْ شُكْرُهُ فَوْزٌ لِلشَّاكِرِينَ،
Wayā man shukruhu fawzun li-l-shākirīna,
gratitude to whom brings fulfilment to the grateful,
وَيَا مَنْ طَاعَتُهُ نَجَاةٌ لِلْمُطِيعِينَ،
Wayā man ṭāʿatuhu najātun li-l-muṭīʿīna,
and obedience to whom brings salvation to the obedient,
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ.
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi.
bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاشْغَلْ قُلُوبَنَا بِذِكْرِكَ عَنْ كُلِّ ذِكْرٍ،
Wa-ishghal qulūbanā bidhikrika ʿan kulli dhikrin,
Fill our hearts with remembrance of You above every other remembrance,
وَأَلْسِنَتَنَا بِشُكْرِكَ عَنْ كُلِّ شُكْرٍ،
Wa-alsinatanā bishukrika ʿan kulli shukrin,
our tongues with gratitude to You above every other gratitude,
وَجَوَارِحَنَا بِطَاعَتِكَ عَنْ كُلِّ طَاعَةٍ.
Wajawāriḥanā biṭāʿatika ʿan kulli ṭāʿatin.
and our limbs with obedience to You above every other obedience.
فَإِنْ قَدَّرْتَ لَنَا فَرَاغًا مِنْ شُغُلٍ،
Fa-in qaddarta lanā farāghan min shughulin,
If You grant us time free from work,
فَاجْعَلْهُ فَرَاغَ سَلَامَةٍ،
Fa-ijʿalhu farāgha salāmatin,
make it a time of safety,
لَا تُدْرِكُنَا فِيهِ تَبِعَةٌ وَلَا تَلْحَقُنَا فِيهِ سَآمَةٌ،
Lā tudrikunā fīhi tabiʿatun walā talḥaqunā fīhi saʾāmatun,
in which we incur no blame and fall into no weariness,
حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ عَنَّا كُتَّابُ السَّيِّئَاتِ
Ḥattā yanṣarifa ʿannā kuttābu al-sayyiʾāti
so that the scribes of evil deeds leave us
بِصَحِيفَةٍ خَالِيَةٍ مِنْ ذِكْرِ سَيِّئَاتِنَا،
Biṣaḥīfatin khāliyatin min dhikri sayyiʾātinā,
with a record containing none of our misdeeds,
وَيَتَوَلَّى كُتَّابُ الْحَسَنَاتِ عَنَّا مَسْرُورِينَ
Wayatawallā kuttābu al-ḥasanāti ʿannā masrūrīna
while the scribes of good deeds depart rejoicing
بِمَا كَتَبُوا مِنْ حَسَنَاتِنَا.
Bimā katabū min ḥasanātinā.
in the good actions they have written down for us.
وَإِذَا انْقَضَتْ أَيَّامُ حَيَاتِنَا،
Wa-idhā inqaḍat ayyāmu ḥayātinā,
When the days of our lives have passed,
وَتَصَرَّمَتْ مُدَدُ أَعْمَارِنَا،
Wataṣarramat mudadu aʿmārinā,
our allotted spans have run out,
وَاسْتَحْضَرَتْنَا دَعْوَتُكَ الَّتِي لَا بُدَّ مِنْهَا وَمِنْ إِجَابَتِهَا،
Wa-istaḥḍaratnā daʿwatuka allatī lā budda minhā wamin ijābatihā,
and Your summons reaches us, a summons that must come and must be answered,
فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
bless Muhammad and his family.
وَاجْعَلْ خِتَامَ مَا تُحْصِي عَلَيْنَا كَتَبَةُ أَعْمَالِنَا
Wa-ijʿal khitāma mā tuḥṣī ʿalaynā katabatu aʿmālinā
Let the final entry made by the scribes who record our deeds
تَوْبَةً مَقْبُولَةً،
Tawbatan maqbūlatan,
be a repentance that You accept,
لَا تُوقِفُنَا بَعْدَهَا عَلَى ذَنْبٍ اجْتَرَحْنَاهُ،
Lā tūqifunā baʿdahā ʿalā dhanbin ijtaraḥnāhu,
after which You do not call us to account for any sin we have committed
وَلَا مَعْصِيَةٍ اقْتَرَفْنَاهَا.
Walā maʿṣiyatin iqtarafnāhā.
or disobedience we have practised.
وَلَا تَكْشِفْ عَنَّا سِتْرًا سَتَرْتَهُ عَلَى رُؤُوسِ الْأَشْهَادِ،
Walā takshif ʿannā sitran satartahu ʿalā ruʾūsi al-ashhādi,
Do not uncover before all the witnesses what You have kept concealed about us,
يَوْمَ تَبْلُو أَخْبَارَ عِبَادِكَ.
Yawma tablū akhbāra ʿibādika.
on the day You examine Your servants’ lives.
إِنَّكَ رَحِيمٌ بِمَنْ دَعَاكَ،
Innaka raḥīmun biman daʿāka,
You are merciful to those who pray to You,
وَمُسْتَجِيبٌ لِمَنْ نَادَاكَ.
Wamustajībun liman nādāka.
and You answer those who call upon You.
الدُّعَاءُ ١٢
Al-duʿāʾu 12
Prayer 12
فِي الِاعْتِرَافِ وَطَلَبِ التَّوْبَةِ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى
Fī al-iʿtirāfi waṭalabi al-tawbati ilā Allāhi taʿālā
Confession and seeking repentance before God Most High
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّهُ يَحْجُبُنِي عَنْ مَسْأَلَتِكَ خِلَالٌ ثَلَاثٌ،
Allāhumma innahu yaḥjubunī ʿan masʾalatika khilālun thalāthun,
O God, three things hold me back from asking You,
وَتَحْدُونِي عَلَيْهَا خَلَّةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ.
Wataḥdūnī ʿalayhā khallatun wāḥidatun.
while one thing urges me to ask.
يَحْجُبُنِي أَمْرٌ أَمَرْتَ بِهِ فَأَبْطَأْتُ عَنْهُ،
Yaḥjubunī amrun amarta bihi fa-abṭaʾtu ʿanhu,
I am held back by a command of Yours that I was slow to obey,
وَنَهْيٌ نَهَيْتَنِي عَنْهُ فَأَسْرَعْتُ إِلَيْهِ،
Wanahyun nahaytanī ʿanhu fa-asraʿtu ilayhi,
a prohibition of Yours that I rushed to violate,
وَنِعْمَةٌ أَنْعَمْتَ بِهَا عَلَيَّ فَقَصَّرْتُ فِي شُكْرِهَا.
Waniʿmatun anʿamta bihā ʿalayya faqaṣṣartu fī shukrihā.
and a blessing You gave me for which I failed to thank You enough.
وَيَحْدُونِي عَلَى مَسْأَلَتِكَ تَفَضُّلُكَ
Wayaḥdūnī ʿalā masʾalatika tafaḍḍuluka
What urges me to ask You is the generosity You show
عَلَى مَنْ أَقْبَلَ بِوَجْهِهِ إِلَيْكَ،
ʿalā man aqbala biwajhihi ilayka,
to whoever turns towards You
وَوَفَدَ بِحُسْنِ ظَنِّهِ إِلَيْكَ،
Wawafada biḥusni ẓannihi ilayka,
and approaches You with trust in Your goodness.
إِذْ جَمِيعُ إِحْسَانِكَ تَفَضُّلٌ،
Idh jamīʿu iḥsānika tafaḍḍulun,
All Your kindness is freely given grace,
وَإِذْ كُلُّ نِعَمِكَ ابْتِدَاءٌ.
Wa-idh kullu niʿamika ibtidāʾun.
and every blessing begins with You, before it is earned.
فَهَا أَنَا ذَا يَا إِلَهِي وَاقِفٌ بِبَابِ عِزِّكَ،
Fahā anā dhā yā ilāhī wāqifun bibābi ʿizzika,
Here I am, my God, standing at the door of Your might,
وُقُوفَ الْمُسْتَسْلِمِ الذَّلِيلِ،
Wuqūfa al-mustaslimi al-dhalīli,
humbled and surrendered,
وَسَائِلُكَ عَلَى الْحَيَاءِ مِنِّي سُؤَالَ الْبَائِسِ الْمُعِيلِ.
Wasāʾiluka ʿalā al-ḥayāʾi minnī suʾāla al-bāʾisi al-muʿīli.
asking You, despite my shame, like a destitute person burdened with dependants.
مُقِرٌّ لَكَ بِأَنِّي لَمْ أَسْتَسْلِمْ وَقْتَ إِحْسَانِكَ
Muqirrun laka biʾannī lam astaslim waqta iḥsānika
I acknowledge that the only submission I have offered in response to Your goodness
إِلَّا بِالْإِقْلَاعِ عَنْ عِصْيَانِكَ،
Illā bi-al-iqlāʿi ʿan ʿiṣyānika,
has been to give up disobeying You,
وَلَمْ أَخْلُ فِي الْحَالَاتِ كُلِّهَا مِنِ امْتِنَانِكَ.
Walam akhlu fī al-ḥālāti kullihā mini imtinānika.
while at no time have I been without Your favour.
فَهَلْ يَنْفَعُنِي يَا إِلَهِي
Fahal yanfaʿunī yā ilāhī
My God, will it benefit me
إِقْرَارِي عِنْدَكَ بِسُوءِ مَا اكْتَسَبْتُ؟
Iqrārī ʿindaka bisūʾi mā iktasabtu?
to admit before You the evil I have earned?
وَهَلْ يُنْجِينِي مِنْكَ اعْتِرَافِي لَكَ بِقَبِيحِ مَا ارْتَكَبْتُ؟
Wahal yunjīnī minka iʿtirāfī laka biqabīḥi mā irtakabtu?
Will confessing my shameful deeds to You save me from Your punishment?
أَمْ أَوْجَبْتَ لِي فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا سُخْطَكَ؟
Am awjabta lī fī maqāmī hādhā sukhṭaka?
Or have You decreed Your anger against me as I stand here?
أَمْ لَزِمَنِي فِي وَقْتِ دُعَائِي مَقْتُكَ؟
Am lazimanī fī waqti duʿāʾī maqtuka?
Has Your displeasure fallen upon me even as I pray?
سُبْحَانَكَ! لَا أَيْأَسُ مِنْكَ
Subḥānaka! lā ayʾasu minka
Glory be to You! I will not lose hope in You,
وَقَدْ فَتَحْتَ لِيَ بَابَ التَّوْبَةِ إِلَيْكَ.
Waqad fataḥta liya bāba al-tawbati ilayka.
for You have opened the door of repentance to You.
بَلْ أَقُولُ مَقَالَ الْعَبْدِ الذَّلِيلِ الظَّالِمِ لِنَفْسِهِ،
Bal aqūlu maqāla al-ʿabdi al-dhalīli al-ẓālimi linafsihi,
I speak instead as a humbled servant who has wronged himself,
الْمُسْتَخِفِّ بِحُرْمَةِ رَبِّهِ،
Al-mustakhiffi biḥurmati rabbihi,
who has treated his Lord’s sanctity lightly,
الَّذِي عَظُمَتْ ذُنُوبُهُ فَجَلَّتْ،
Alladhī ʿaẓumat dhunūbuhu fajallat,
whose sins have grown immense,
وَأَدْبَرَتْ أَيَّامُهُ فَوَلَّتْ،
Wa-adbarat ayyāmuhu fawallat,
and whose days have slipped away and passed.
حَتَّى إِذَا رَأَى مُدَّةَ الْعَمَلِ قَدِ انْقَضَتْ،
Ḥattā idhā raʾā muddata al-ʿamali qadi inqaḍat,
When he sees that his time for action has ended
وَغَايَةَ الْعُمُرِ قَدِ انْتَهَتْ،
Waghāyata al-ʿumuri qadi intahat,
and his life has reached its limit,
وَأَيْقَنَ أَنَّهُ لَا مَحِيصَ لَهُ مِنْكَ،
Wa-ayqana annahu lā maḥīṣa lahu minka,
and knows with certainty that he cannot escape You
وَلَا مَهْرَبَ لَهُ عَنْكَ،
Walā mahraba lahu ʿanka,
or flee away from You,
تَلَقَّاكَ بِالْإِنَابَةِ وَأَخْلَصَ لَكَ التَّوْبَةَ،
Talaqqāka bi-al-inābati wa-akhlaṣa laka al-tawbata,
he turns back to meet You and offers You sincere repentance.
فَقَامَ إِلَيْكَ بِقَلْبٍ طَاهِرٍ نَقِيٍّ،
Faqāma ilayka biqalbin ṭāhirin naqiyyin,
He stands before You with a heart made pure and clean,
ثُمَّ دَعَاكَ بِصَوْتٍ حَائِلٍ خَفِيٍّ،
Thumma daʿāka biṣawtin ḥāʾilin khafiyyin,
then calls to You in a weak, subdued voice.
قَدْ تَطَأْطَأَ لَكَ فَانْحَنَى،
Qad taṭaʾṭaʾa laka fa-inḥanā,
He has lowered himself before You and bent low,
وَنَكَّسَ رَأْسَهُ فَانْثَنَى،
Wanakkasa raʾsahu fa-inthanā,
bowed his head and stooped.
قَدْ أَرْعَشَتْ خَشْيَتُهُ رِجْلَيْهِ،
Qad arʿashat khashyatuhu rijlayhi,
Fear has made his legs tremble,
وَغَرَّقَتْ دُمُوعُهُ خَدَّيْهِ،
Wagharraqat dumūʿuhu khaddayhi,
and tears have drenched his cheeks.
يَدْعُوكَ بِيَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ،
Yadʿūka biyā arḥama al-rāḥimīna,
He calls to You: O most merciful of all who show mercy,
وَيَا أَرْحَمَ مَنِ انْتَابَهُ الْمُسْتَرْحِمُونَ،
Wayā arḥama mani intābahu al-mustarḥimūna,
most merciful of those approached by people seeking mercy,
وَيَا أَعْطَفَ مَنْ أَطَافَ بِهِ الْمُسْتَغْفِرُونَ،
Wayā aʿṭafa man aṭāfa bihi al-mustaghfirūna,
most compassionate of those surrounded by people seeking forgiveness,
وَيَا مَنْ عَفْوُهُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ نِقْمَتِهِ،
Wayā man ʿafwuhu aktharu min niqmatihi,
whose pardon is more abundant than His retribution,
وَيَا مَنْ رِضَاهُ أَوْفَرُ مِنْ سَخَطِهِ،
Wayā man riḍāhu awfaru min sakhaṭihi,
whose pleasure is more plentiful than His anger,
وَيَا مَنْ تَحَمَّدَ إِلَى خَلْقِهِ بِحُسْنِ التَّجَاوُزِ،
Wayā man taḥammada ilā khalqihi biḥusni al-tajāwuzi,
who wins the praise of His creatures through gracious forgiveness,
وَيَا مَنْ عَوَّدَ عِبَادَهُ قَبُولَ الْإِنَابَةِ،
Wayā man ʿawwada ʿibādahu qabūla al-inābati,
who has accustomed His servants to accepting their return,
وَيَا مَنِ اسْتَصْلَحَ فَاسِدَهُمْ بِالتَّوْبَةِ،
Wayā mani istaṣlaḥa fāsidahum bi-al-tawbati,
who reforms those who have gone wrong through repentance,
وَيَا مَنْ رَضِيَ مِنْ فِعْلِهِمْ بِالْيَسِيرِ،
Wayā man raḍiya min fiʿlihim bi-al-yasīri,
who accepts even a little of their good action,
وَيَا مَنْ كَافَى قَلِيلَهُمْ بِالْكَثِيرِ،
Wayā man kāfā qalīlahum bi-al-kathīri,
who rewards their little with much,
وَيَا مَنْ ضَمِنَ لَهُمْ إِجَابَةَ الدُّعَاءِ،
Wayā man ḍamina lahum ijābata al-duʿāʾi,
who has guaranteed them an answer to prayer,
وَيَا مَنْ وَعَدَهُمْ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِتَفَضُّلِهِ حُسْنَ الْجَزَاءِ،
Wayā man waʿadahum ʿalā nafsihi bitafaḍḍulihi ḥusna al-jazāʾi,
who has freely pledged to grant them a good reward:
مَا أَنَا بِأَعْصَى مَنْ عَصَاكَ فَغَفَرْتَ لَهُ،
Mā anā biʾaʿṣā man ʿaṣāka faghafarta lahu,
I am no more disobedient than others whom You have forgiven,
وَمَا أَنَا بِأَلْوَمِ مَنِ اعْتَذَرَ إِلَيْكَ فَقَبِلْتَ مِنْهُ،
Wamā anā biʾalwami mani iʿtadhara ilayka faqabilta minhu,
no more blameworthy than those whose apologies You have accepted,
وَمَا أَنَا بِأَظْلَمِ مَنْ تَابَ إِلَيْكَ فَعُدْتَ عَلَيْهِ.
Wamā anā biʾaẓlami man tāba ilayka faʿudta ʿalayhi.
and no more unjust than those who repented and to whom You returned in mercy.
أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا،
Atūbu ilayka fī maqāmī hādhā,
Here, where I stand, I repent to You,
تَوْبَةَ نَادِمٍ عَلَى مَا فَرَطَ مِنْهُ،
Tawbata nādimin ʿalā mā faraṭa minhu,
with the repentance of one who regrets what he has done,
مُشْفِقٍ مِمَّا اجْتَمَعَ عَلَيْهِ،
Mushfiqin mimmā ijtamaʿa ʿalayhi,
fears the burden he has gathered against himself,
خَالِصِ الْحَيَاءِ مِمَّا وَقَعَ فِيهِ،
Khāliṣi al-ḥayāʾi mimmā waqaʿa fīhi,
and feels sincere shame for what he has fallen into.
عَالِمٍ بِأَنَّ الْعَفْوَ عَنِ الذَّنْبِ الْعَظِيمِ لَا يَتَعَاظَمُكَ،
ʿālimin biʾanna al-ʿafwa ʿani al-dhanbi al-ʿaẓīmi lā yataʿāẓamuka,
I know that no sin is too great for You to pardon,
وَأَنَّ التَّجَاوُزَ عَنِ الْإِثْمِ الْجَلِيلِ لَا يَسْتَصْعِبُكَ،
Wa-anna al-tajāwuza ʿani al-ithmi al-jalīli lā yastaṣʿibuka,
that forgiving a grievous offence presents You with no difficulty,
وَأَنَّ احْتِمَالَ الْجِنَايَاتِ الْفَاحِشَةِ لَا يَتَكَأَّدُكَ،
Wa-anna iḥtimāla al-jināyāti al-fāḥishati lā yatakaʾʾaduka,
and that bearing with terrible wrongdoing places no burden upon You.
وَأَنَّ أَحَبَّ عِبَادِكَ إِلَيْكَ
Wa-anna aḥabba ʿibādika ilayka
I know that the servants You love most
مَنْ تَرَكَ الِاسْتِكْبَارَ عَلَيْكَ،
Man taraka al-istikbāra ʿalayka,
are those who give up arrogance towards You,
وَجَانَبَ الْإِصْرَارَ وَلَزِمَ الِاسْتِغْفَارَ.
Wajānaba al-iṣrāra walazima al-istighfāra.
cease persisting in sin, and remain constant in seeking forgiveness.
وَأَنَا أَبْرَأُ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنْ أَسْتَكْبِرَ،
Wa-anā abraʾu ilayka min an astakbira,
Before You I renounce arrogance,
وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ أَنْ أُصِرَّ.
Wa-aʿūdhu bika min an uṣirra.
and seek refuge in You from persisting in sin.
وَأَسْتَغْفِرُكَ لِمَا قَصَّرْتُ فِيهِ،
Wa-astaghfiruka limā qaṣṣartu fīhi,
I ask Your forgiveness for what I have neglected,
وَأَسْتَعِينُ بِكَ عَلَى مَا عَجَزْتُ عَنْهُ.
Wa-astaʿīnu bika ʿalā mā ʿajaztu ʿanhu.
and Your help with what I have been unable to do.
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،
Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,
O God, bless Muhammad and his family.
وَهَبْ لِي مَا يَجِبُ عَلَيَّ لَكَ،
Wahab lī mā yajibu ʿalayya laka,
Forgive the obligations to You that I have left unfulfilled,
وَعَافِنِي مِمَّا أَسْتَوْجِبُهُ مِنْكَ،
Waʿāfinī mimmā astawjibuhu minka,
spare me the punishment I have deserved from You,
وَأَجِرْنِي مِمَّا يَخَافُهُ أَهْلُ الْإِسَاءَةِ.
Wa-ajirnī mimmā yakhāfuhu ahlu al-isāʾati.
and protect me from what wrongdoers fear.
فَإِنَّكَ مَلِيءٌ بِالْعَفْوِ،
Fa-innaka malīʾun bi-al-ʿafwi,
Your capacity to pardon is boundless;
مَرْجُوٌّ لِلْمَغْفِرَةِ مَعْرُوفٌ بِالتَّجَاوُزِ.
Marjuwwun li-l-maghfirati maʿrūfun bi-al-tajāwuzi.
You are the hope of those seeking forgiveness, known for overlooking faults.
لَيْسَ لِحَاجَتِي مَطْلَبٌ سِوَاكَ،
Laysa liḥājatī maṭlabun siwāka,
I have nowhere to seek fulfilment of my need except with You,
وَلَا لِذَنْبِي غَافِرٌ غَيْرُكَ،
Walā lidhanbī ghāfirun ghayruka,
and no one but You can forgive my sin.
حَاشَاكَ وَلَا أَخَافُ عَلَى نَفْسِي إِلَّا إِيَّاكَ.
Ḥāshāka walā akhāfu ʿalā nafsī illā iyyāka.
Exalted are You! I fear none but You for my soul.
إِنَّكَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَى وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ.
Innaka ahlu al-taqwā wa-ahlu al-maghfirati.
You alone deserve reverent fear, and You are the One who forgives.
صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،
Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin,
Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.
وَاقْضِ حَاجَتِي وَأَنْجِحْ طَلِبَتِي،
Wa-iqḍi ḥājatī wa-anjiḥ ṭalibatī,
Fulfil my need and grant my request,
وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبِي وَآمِنْ خَوْفَ نَفْسِي.
Wa-ighfir dhanbī wa-āmin khawfa nafsī.
forgive my sin and calm the fear within me.
إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ،
Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun,
You have power over all things,
وَذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ.
Wa-dhālika ʿalayka yasīrun.
and this is easy for You.
آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.
Āmīna rabba al-ʿālamīna.
Amen, Lord of all worlds.
Text notes and sources
Arabic text. The text follows Document 2 of the nine-part Arabic edition, including the additional prayer after Prayer 3 and the complete ending of Prayer 12. The twelve numbered prayers were compared with the Arabic text in the Al-Kafeel Islamic Library. Spelling, spacing, punctuation, and vocalization have been regularized for reading.
Text corrections. Clear transcription errors have been corrected, including yatakhaṭṭā in Prayer 1, the stray letter before min niʿamihi in Prayer 1, anilnī in Prayer 7, and khawātim in the title of Prayer 11. Incomplete spellings of Allāhumma and subḥānaka have also been restored. These corrections follow the comparison text; no prayer passage has been omitted.
Readings retained. Prayer 6 retains ḥaẓẓan min ʿibādika, rendered “a share among Your servants”, as in this Arabic volume and the Al-Kafeel text. Prayer 12 retains lam astaslim … illā bi-l-iqlāʿi ʿan ʿiṣyānika, understood here as acknowledging that the submission offered in return for divine goodness amounts only to giving up disobedience.
Terms in the prayers. Barzakh in Prayer 1 is the intermediate state between death and resurrection. ʿIlliyyīn is the exalted register or station associated with the righteous. In Prayer 3, the Frequented House renders al-Bayt al-Maʿmūr; the names and descriptions of the angels follow the Arabic text. Wasīla in the additional prayer means a means of approach or nearness to God.
Qurʾānic language. These prayers weave Qurʾānic quotations and echoes into their own sentences. Prominent passages include 53:31 and 21:23 in Prayer 1; 25:44, 44:41, and 83:20–21 in Prayer 1; 66:6, 13:24, 69:30–31, and an echo of 50:21 in Prayer 3; 59:10 in Prayer 4; and 74:56 at the end of Prayer 12. The English here is a fresh rendering of the Arabic prayer text.
Translation. The English aims to be clear and natural while preserving the prayer’s meaning, address, repetition, and imagery. The Arabic remains the text for recitation; the transliteration is a reading aid.
