Prayers 13 to 24

Prayers 13 to 24 of the Complete Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādiyya. Each passage appears in fully vocalized Arabic, transliteration, and a new modern English translation. This volume includes the prayer for noble character and closes with the prayer for parents.

Reading the three lines

Read each group from Arabic to transliteration to English. Short passages continue the prayer in order; a line ending need not be the end of a sentence. Each three-line group stays together on one page.

ā ī ū mark long vowels; ʿ marks ʿayn and ʾ marks hamza within a word. Initial hamza is represented by its vowel. ḥ ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ distinguish Arabic consonants; th dh kh sh gh represent single Arabic sounds. Doubled consonants are held longer.

The transliteration retains grammatical endings and the written form al. In connected recitation, initial helping vowels often disappear and al assimilates before sun letters. At a full pause, final short case vowels are normally dropped. A separating hyphen, as in nufid-hā, keeps adjacent consonants distinct.

God translates Allāh. “Muhammad and his family” renders Muḥammad wa-ālihi. The first-person prayers remain in the voice of the person praying.

Prayer 13

فِي طَلَبِ الْحَوَائِجِ إِلَى اللَّهِ تَعَالَى

Fī ṭalabi al-ḥawāʾiji ilā Allāhi taʿālā

Asking God Most High to fulfil one’s needs

اللَّهُمَّ يَا مُنْتَهَى مَطْلَبِ الْحَاجَاتِ،

Allāhumma yā muntahā maṭlabi al-ḥājāti,

O God, the final destination of every search to meet a need,

وَيَا مَنْ عِنْدَهُ نَيْلُ الطَّلِبَاتِ،

Wayā man ʿindahu naylu al-ṭalibāti,

O You with whom all requests find fulfilment,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يَبِيعُ نِعَمَهُ بِالْأَثْمَانِ،

Wayā man lā yabīʿu niʿamahu bi-al-athmāni,

who does not sell His blessings for a price,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يُكَدِّرُ عَطَايَاهُ بِالِامْتِنَانِ،

Wayā man lā yukaddiru ʿaṭāyāhu bi-al-imtināni,

who does not spoil His gifts by reminding us of His generosity,

وَيَا مَنْ يُسْتَغْنَى بِهِ وَلَا يُسْتَغْنَى عَنْهُ،

Wayā man yustaghnā bihi walā yustaghnā ʿanhu,

through whom every need is met, yet whom no one can do without,

وَيَا مَنْ يُرْغَبُ إِلَيْهِ وَلَا يُرْغَبُ عَنْهُ.

Wayā man yurghabu ilayhi walā yurghabu ʿanhu.

to whom all longing turns, and from whom none would turn away.

وَيَا مَنْ لَا تُفْنِي خَزَائِنَهُ الْمَسَائِلُ،

Wayā man lā tufnī khazāʾinahu al-masāʾilu,

O You whose treasures no requests can exhaust,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا تُبَدِّلُ حِكْمَتَهُ الْوَسَائِلُ،

Wayā man lā tubaddilu ḥikmatahu al-wasāʾilu,

whose wisdom no means of approach can change,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا تَنْقَطِعُ عَنْهُ حَوَائِجُ الْمُحْتَاجِينَ،

Wayā man lā tanqaṭiʿu ʿanhu ḥawāʾiju al-muḥtājīna,

to whom the needs of those in want come without end,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يُعَنِّيهِ دُعَاءُ الدَّاعِينَ.

Wayā man lā yuʿannīhi duʿāʾu al-dāʿīna.

whom the prayers of those who call never weary.

تَمَدَّحْتَ بِالْغَنَاءِ عَنْ خَلْقِكَ،

Tamaddaḥta bi-al-ghanāʾi ʿan khalqika,

You have proclaimed Your freedom from any need of Your creatures,

وَأَنْتَ أَهْلُ الْغِنَى عَنْهُمْ،

Wa-anta ahlu al-ghinā ʿanhum,

and such freedom from need truly belongs to You.

وَنَسَبْتَهُمْ إِلَى الْفَقْرِ،

Wanasabtahum ilā al-faqri,

You have described them as needy,

وَهُمْ أَهْلُ الْفَقْرِ إِلَيْكَ.

Wahum ahlu al-faqri ilayka.

and they are indeed in need of You.

فَمَنْ حَاوَلَ سَدَّ خَلَّتِهِ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ،

Faman ḥāwala sadda khallatihi min ʿindika,

Whoever seeks from You the means to fill his need,

وَرَامَ صَرْفَ الْفَقْرِ عَنْ نَفْسِهِ بِكَ،

Warāma ṣarfa al-faqri ʿan nafsihi bika,

and through You tries to free himself from want,

فَقَدْ طَلَبَ حَاجَتَهُ فِي مَظَانِّهَا،

Faqad ṭalaba ḥājatahu fī maẓānnihā,

has sought the fulfilment of his need where it can be found

وَأَتَى طَلِبَتَهُ مِنْ وَجْهِهَا.

Wa-atā ṭalibatahu min wajhihā.

and approached his request in the right way.

وَمَنْ تَوَجَّهَ بِحَاجَتِهِ إِلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ،

Waman tawajjaha biḥājatihi ilā aḥadin min khalqika,

Whoever turns with his need to one of Your creatures,

أَوْ جَعَلَهُ سَبَبَ نُجْحِهَا دُونَكَ،

Aw jaʿalahu sababa nujḥihā dūnaka,

or relies on that creature, apart from You, for its fulfilment,

فَقَدْ تَعَرَّضَ لِلْحِرْمَانِ،

Faqad taʿarraḍa li-l-ḥirmāni,

has exposed himself to deprivation

وَاسْتَحَقَّ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ فَوْتَ الْإِحْسَانِ.

Wa-istaḥaqqa min ʿindika fawta al-iḥsāni.

and deserved to miss the goodness You bestow.

اللَّهُمَّ وَلِي إِلَيْكَ حَاجَةٌ

Allāhumma walī ilayka ḥājatun

O God, I have a need to bring before You

قَدْ قَصَّرَ عَنْهَا جُهْدِي،

Qad qaṣṣara ʿanhā juhdī,

which all my efforts have failed to meet

وَتَقَطَّعَتْ دُونَهَا حِيَلِي،

Wataqaṭṭaʿat dūnahā ḥiyalī,

and for which all my resources have run out.

وَسَوَّلَتْ لِي نَفْسِي رَفْعَهَا

Wasawwalat lī nafsī rafʿahā

My own soul tempted me to take it

إِلَى مَنْ يَرْفَعُ حَوَائِجَهُ إِلَيْكَ،

Ilā man yarfaʿu ḥawāʾijahu ilayka,

to someone who brings his own needs to You

وَلَا يَسْتَغْنِي فِي طَلِبَاتِهِ عَنْكَ.

Walā yastaghnī fī ṭalibātihi ʿanka.

and cannot do without You in seeking what he needs.

وَهِيَ زَلَّةٌ مِنْ زَلَلِ الْخَاطِئِينَ،

Wahiya zallatun min zalali al-khāṭiʾīna,

This was a lapse such as those who err fall into,

وَعَثْرَةٌ مِنْ عَثَرَاتِ الْمُذْنِبِينَ.

Waʿathratun min ʿatharāti al-mudhnibīna.

a stumble such as sinners make.

ثُمَّ انْتَبَهْتُ بِتَذْكِيرِكَ لِي مِنْ غَفْلَتِي،

Thumma intabahtu bitadhkīrika lī min ghaflatī,

Then Your reminder woke me from my heedlessness;

وَنَهَضْتُ بِتَوْفِيقِكَ مِنْ زَلَّتِي،

Wanahaḍtu bitawfīqika min zallatī,

through Your help I rose from my lapse,

وَرَجَعْتُ وَنَكَصْتُ بِتَسْدِيدِكَ عَنْ عَثْرَتِي،

Warajaʿtu wanakaṣtu bitasdīdika ʿan ʿathratī,

and through Your guidance I turned back from my stumbling.

وَقُلْتُ: سُبْحَانَ رَبِّي!

Waqultu: subḥāna rabbī!

I said: Glory be to my Lord!

كَيْفَ يَسْأَلُ مُحْتَاجٌ مُحْتَاجًا،

Kayfa yasʾalu muḥtājun muḥtājan,

How can one needy person ask another who is needy?

وَأَنَّى يَرْغَبُ مُعْدِمٌ إِلَى مُعْدِمٍ؟

Wa-annā yarghabu muʿdimun ilā muʿdimin?

How can one who has nothing place his hope in another who has nothing?

فَقَصَدْتُكَ يَا إِلَهِي بِالرَّغْبَةِ،

Faqaṣadtuka yā ilāhī bi-al-raghbati,

So I turned to You, my God, with longing,

وَأَوْفَدْتُ عَلَيْكَ رَجَائِي بِالثِّقَةِ بِكَ.

Wa-awfadtu ʿalayka rajāʾī bi-al-thiqati bika.

and brought my hope before You, trusting in You.

وَعَلِمْتُ أَنَّ كَثِيرَ مَا أَسْأَلُكَ يَسِيرٌ فِي وُجْدِكَ،

Waʿalimtu anna kathīra mā asʾaluka yasīrun fī wujdika,

I know that all I ask, however much, is little beside Your riches;

وَأَنَّ خَطِيرَ مَا أَسْتَوْهِبُكَ حَقِيرٌ فِي وُسْعِكَ،

Wa-anna khaṭīra mā astawhibuka ḥaqīrun fī wusʿika,

however great the gift I seek, it is small beside Your abundance.

وَأَنَّ كَرَمَكَ لَا يَضِيقُ عَنْ سُؤَالِ أَحَدٍ،

Wa-anna karamaka lā yaḍīqu ʿan suʾāli aḥadin,

Your generosity is never too narrow for anyone’s request,

وَأَنَّ يَدَكَ بِالْعَطَايَا أَعْلَى مِنْ كُلِّ يَدٍ.

Wa-anna yadaka bi-al-ʿaṭāyā aʿlā min kulli yadin.

and Your hand in giving is raised above every other hand.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاحْمِلْنِي بِكَرَمِكَ عَلَى التَّفَضُّلِ،

Wa-iḥmilnī bikaramika ʿalā al-tafaḍḍuli,

In Your generosity, treat me with grace;

وَلَا تَحْمِلْنِي بِعَدْلِكَ عَلَى الِاسْتِحْقَاقِ.

Walā taḥmilnī biʿadlika ʿalā al-istiḥqāqi.

do not, in Your justice, deal with me only as I deserve.

فَمَا أَنَا بِأَوَّلِ رَاغِبٍ رَغِبَ إِلَيْكَ فَأَعْطَيْتَهُ

Famā anā biʾawwali rāghibin raghiba ilayka fa-aʿṭaytahu

I am not the first to turn to You in longing and receive Your gift

وَهُوَ يَسْتَحِقُّ الْمَنْعَ،

Wahuwa yastaḥiqqu al-manʿa,

while deserving to be refused,

وَلَا بِأَوَّلِ سَائِلٍ سَأَلَكَ فَأَفْضَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ

Walā biʾawwali sāʾilin saʾalaka fa-afḍalta ʿalayhi

nor the first to ask You and receive Your generosity

وَهُوَ يَسْتَوْجِبُ الْحِرْمَانَ.

Wahuwa yastawjibu al-ḥirmāna.

while deserving deprivation.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَكُنْ لِدُعَائِي مُجِيبًا،

Wakun liduʿāʾī mujīban,

Answer my prayer,

وَمِنْ نِدَائِي قَرِيبًا،

Wamin nidāʾī qarīban,

be near when I call,

وَلِتَضَرُّعِي رَاحِمًا، وَلِصَوْتِي سَامِعًا.

Walitaḍarruʿī rāḥiman, waliṣawtī sāmiʿan.

have mercy on my pleading, and hear my voice.

وَلَا تَقْطَعْ رَجَائِي عَنْكَ،

Walā taqṭaʿ rajāʾī ʿanka,

Do not cut off my hope in You,

وَلَا تَبُتَّ سَبَبِي مِنْكَ،

Walā tabutta sababī minka,

or sever the bond that joins me to You.

وَلَا تُوَجِّهْنِي فِي حَاجَتِي هَذِهِ وَغَيْرِهَا إِلَى سِوَاكَ.

Walā tuwajjihnī fī ḥājatī hādhihi waghayrihā ilā siwāka.

Do not turn me to anyone else for this need or any other.

وَتَوَلَّنِي بِنُجْحِ طَلِبَتِي وَقَضَاءِ حَاجَتِي وَنَيْلِ سُؤْلِي،

Watawallanī binujḥi ṭalibatī waqaḍāʾi ḥājatī wanayli suʾlī,

Take care of me by granting my request, meeting my need and my desire,

قَبْلَ زَوَالِي عَنْ مَوْقِفِي هَذَا،

Qabla zawālī ʿan mawqifī hādhā,

before I leave this place where I stand,

بِتَيْسِيرِكَ لِيَ الْعَسِيرَ،

Bitaysīrika liya al-ʿasīra,

by making what is difficult easy for me

وَحُسْنِ تَقْدِيرِكَ لِي فِي جَمِيعِ الْأُمُورِ.

Waḥusni taqdīrika lī fī jamīʿi al-umūri.

and ordering all my affairs for good.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family

صَلَاةً دَائِمَةً نَامِيَةً،

Ṣalātan dāʾimatan nāmiyatan,

with a blessing that lasts and grows,

لَا انْقِطَاعَ لِأَبَدِهَا وَلَا مُنْتَهَى لِأَمَدِهَا،

Lā inqiṭāʿa liʾabadihā walā muntahā liʾamadihā,

whose continuity is never broken and whose duration never ends.

وَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ عَوْنًا لِي وَسَبَبًا لِنَجَاحِ طَلِبَتِي،

Wa-ijʿal dhālika ʿawnan lī wasababan linajāḥi ṭalibatī,

Make this a help to me and a means for my request to be fulfilled.

إِنَّكَ وَاسِعٌ كَرِيمٌ.

Innaka wāsiʿun karīmun.

Your bounty is boundless, and You are generous.

وَمِنْ حَاجَتِي يَا رَبِّ كَذَا وَكَذَا.

Wamin ḥājatī yā rabbi kadhā wakadhā.

Among my needs, my Lord, are such and such.

وَتَذْكُرُ حَاجَتَكَ،

Watadhkuru ḥājataka,

Here mention your need,

ثُمَّ تَسْجُدُ وَتَقُولُ فِي سُجُودِكَ:

Thumma tasjudu wataqūlu fī sujūdika:

then prostrate and say during your prostration:

فَضْلُكَ آنَسَنِي وَإِحْسَانُكَ دَلَّنِي،

Faḍluka ānasanī wa-iḥsānuka dallanī,

Your grace has reassured me, and Your goodness has guided me.

فَأَسْأَلُكَ بِكَ وَبِمُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Fa-asʾaluka bika wabimuḥammadin wa-ālihi,

I ask You by Yourself and by Muhammad and his family,

صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِمْ، أَنْ لَا تَرُدَّنِي خَائِبًا.

Ṣalawātuka ʿalayhim, an lā taruddanī khāʾiban.

Your blessings be upon them, not to send me away disappointed.

Prayer 14

إِذَا اعْتُدِيَ عَلَيْهِ

Idhā uʿtudiya ʿalayhi

When he suffered aggression

أَوْ رَأَى مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ مَا لَا يُحِبُّ

Aw raʾā mina al-ẓālimīna mā lā yuḥibbu

or saw conduct he disliked from those who did wrong

يَا مَنْ لَا يَخْفَى عَلَيْهِ أَنْبَاءُ الْمُتَظَلِّمِينَ،

Yā man lā yakhfā ʿalayhi anbāʾu al-mutaẓallimīna,

O You from whom the accounts of those who suffer wrong are not hidden,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يَحْتَاجُ فِي قِصَصِهِمْ إِلَى شَهَادَاتِ الشَّاهِدِينَ،

Wayā man lā yaḥtāju fī qiṣaṣihim ilā shahādāti al-shāhidīna,

who needs no witnesses to testify to their stories,

وَيَا مَنْ قَرُبَتْ نُصْرَتُهُ مِنَ الْمَظْلُومِينَ،

Wayā man qarubat nuṣratuhu mina al-maẓlūmīna,

whose help is close to those who suffer injustice,

وَيَا مَنْ بَعُدَ عَوْنُهُ عَنِ الظَّالِمِينَ.

Wayā man baʿuda ʿawnuhu ʿani al-ẓālimīna.

and whose aid is far from those who inflict it.

قَدْ عَلِمْتَ يَا إِلَهِي مَا نَالَنِي

Qad ʿalimta yā ilāhī mā nālanī

My God, You know what I have suffered

مِنْ [فُلَانِ بْنِ فُلَانٍ] مِمَّا حَظَرْتَ،

Min [fulāni bni fulānin] mimmā ḥaẓarta,

from [name the person], in violation of what You have forbidden,

وَانْتَهَكَهُ مِنِّي مِمَّا حَجَزْتَ عَلَيْهِ،

Wa-intahakahu minnī mimmā ḥajazta ʿalayhi,

and how he has violated my rights, crossing the limits You set for him,

بَطَرًا فِي نِعْمَتِكَ عِنْدَهُ،

Baṭaran fī niʿmatika ʿindahu,

recklessly abusing the blessings You have given him

وَاغْتِرَارًا بِنَكِيرِكَ عَلَيْهِ.

Wa-ightirāran binakīrika ʿalayhi.

and deluding himself about Your power to call him to account.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَخُذْ ظَالِمِي وَعَدُوِّي عَنْ ظُلْمِي بِقُوَّتِكَ،

Wakhudh ẓālimī waʿaduwwī ʿan ẓulmī biquwwatika,

Through Your strength, restrain my oppressor and enemy from harming me.

وَافْلُلْ حَدَّهُ عَنِّي بِقُدْرَتِكَ،

Wa-uflul ḥaddahu ʿannī biqudratika,

Through Your power, blunt the edge he turns against me.

وَاجْعَلْ لَهُ شُغْلًا فِيمَا يَلِيهِ،

Wa-ijʿal lahu shughlan fīmā yalīhi,

Occupy him with his own affairs

وَعَجْزًا عَمَّا يُنَاوِيهِ.

Waʿajzan ʿammā yunāwīhi.

and make him unable to carry out his hostile designs.

اللَّهُمَّ وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَلَا تُسَوِّغْ لَهُ ظُلْمِي،

Walā tusawwigh lahu ẓulmī,

Do not let him find it easy to wrong me.

وَأَحْسِنْ عَلَيْهِ عَوْنِي،

Wa-aḥsin ʿalayhi ʿawnī,

Grant me Your gracious help against him,

وَاعْصِمْنِي مِنْ مِثْلِ أَفْعَالِهِ،

Wa-iʿṣimnī min mithli afʿālihi,

protect me from acting as he does,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي فِي مِثْلِ حَالِهِ.

Walā tajʿalnī fī mithli ḥālihi.

and do not let me fall into a state like his.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَعْدِنِي عَلَيْهِ عَدْوَى حَاضِرَةً،

Wa-aʿdinī ʿalayhi ʿadwā ḥāḍiratan,

Grant me immediate help against him,

تَكُونُ مِنْ غَيْظِي بِهِ شِفَاءً،

Takūnu min ghayẓī bihi shifāʾan,

a help that heals my anger at him

وَمِنْ حَنَقِي عَلَيْهِ وَفَاءً.

Wamin ḥanaqī ʿalayhi wafāʾan.

and fully relieves my fury towards him.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَعَوِّضْنِي مِنْ ظُلْمِهِ لِي عَفْوَكَ،

Waʿawwiḍnī min ẓulmihi lī ʿafwaka,

Compensate me for his injustice with Your pardon,

وَأَبْدِلْنِي بِسُوءِ صَنِيعِهِ بِي رَحْمَتَكَ.

Wa-abdilnī bisūʾi ṣanīʿihi bī raḥmataka.

and give me Your mercy in place of his mistreatment.

فَكُلُّ مَكْرُوهٍ جَلَلٌ دُونَ سَخَطِكَ،

Fakullu makrūhin jalalun dūna sakhaṭika,

Every hardship is small beside Your anger,

وَكُلُّ مَرْزِئَةٍ سَوَاءٌ مَعَ مَوْجِدَتِكَ.

Wakullu marziʾatin sawāʾun maʿa mawjidatika.

and every loss becomes alike in the face of Your displeasure.

اللَّهُمَّ فَكَمَا كَرَّهْتَ إِلَيَّ أَنْ أُظْلَمَ،

Allāhumma fakamā karrahta ilayya an uẓlama,

O God, just as You have made me hate being wronged,

فَقِنِي مِنْ أَنْ أَظْلِمَ.

Faqinī min an aẓlima.

protect me from wronging others.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا أَشْكُو إِلَى أَحَدٍ سِوَاكَ،

Allāhumma lā ashkū ilā aḥadin siwāka,

O God, I bring my complaint to no one but You,

وَلَا أَسْتَعِينُ بِحَاكِمٍ غَيْرِكَ، حَاشَاكَ،

Walā astaʿīnu biḥākimin ghayrika, ḥāshāka,

and seek help from no judge besides You. Exalted are You!

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family.

وَصِلْ دُعَائِي بِالْإِجَابَةِ،

Waṣil duʿāʾī bi-al-ijābati,

Join my prayer to Your answer

وَاقْرِنْ شِكَايَتِي بِالتَّغْيِيرِ.

Wa-iqrin shikāyatī bi-al-taghyīri.

and my complaint to a change in my condition.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَفْتِنِّي بِالْقُنُوطِ مِنْ إِنْصَافِكَ،

Allāhumma lā taftinnī bi-al-qunūṭi min inṣāfika,

O God, do not let me fall into despair of Your justice,

وَلَا تَفْتِنْهُ بِالْأَمْنِ مِنْ إِنْكَارِكَ،

Walā taftinhu bi-al-amni min inkārika,

or let him be deceived into feeling safe from Your rebuke,

فَيُصِرَّ عَلَى ظُلْمِي وَيُحَاضِرَنِي بِحَقِّي.

Fayuṣirra ʿalā ẓulmī wayuḥāḍiranī biḥaqqī.

so that he persists in wronging me and contests my rightful claim.

وَعَرِّفْهُ عَمَّا قَلِيلٍ مَا أَوْعَدْتَ الظَّالِمِينَ،

Waʿarrifhu ʿammā qalīlin mā awʿadta al-ẓālimīna,

Soon show him what You have threatened wrongdoers with,

وَعَرِّفْنِي مَا وَعَدْتَ مِنْ إِجَابَةِ الْمُضْطَرِّينَ.

Waʿarrifnī mā waʿadta min ijābati al-muḍṭarrīna.

and let me know Your promised answer to those in desperate need.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَوَفِّقْنِي لِقَبُولِ مَا قَضَيْتَ لِي وَعَلَيَّ،

Wawaffiqnī liqabūli mā qaḍayta lī waʿalayya,

Help me accept what You decree, whether for me or against me.

وَرَضِّنِي بِمَا أَخَذْتَ لِي وَمِنِّي،

Waraḍḍinī bimā akhadhta lī waminnī,

Make me content with what You secure for me and take from me.

وَاهْدِنِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ،

Wa-ihdinī lillatī hiya aqwamu,

Guide me towards what is most upright,

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِمَا هُوَ أَسْلَمُ.

Wa-istaʿmilnī bimā huwa aslamu.

and engage me in what is safest and most sound.

اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنْ كَانَتِ الْخِيَرَةُ لِي عِنْدَكَ

Allāhumma wa-in kānati al-khiyaratu lī ʿindaka

O God, if what You know to be best for me lies

فِي تَأْخِيرِ الْأَخْذِ لِي،

Fī taʾkhīri al-akhdhi lī,

in delaying the securing of my rights

وَتَرْكِ الِانْتِقَامِ مِمَّنْ ظَلَمَنِي

Watarki al-intiqāmi mimman ẓalamanī

and deferring retribution against the one who wronged me

إِلَى يَوْمِ الْفَصْلِ وَمَجْمَعِ الْخَصْمِ،

Ilā yawmi al-faṣli wamajmaʿi al-khaṣmi,

until the Day of Decision, when adversaries are gathered,

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

then bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَيِّدْنِي مِنْكَ بِنِيَّةٍ صَادِقَةٍ وَصَبْرٍ دَائِمٍ.

Wa-ayyidnī minka biniyyatin ṣādiqatin waṣabrin dāʾimin.

and support me with sincere resolve and enduring patience from You.

وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْ سُوءِ الرَّغْبَةِ وَهَلَعِ أَهْلِ الْحِرْصِ،

Wa-aʿidhnī min sūʾi al-raghbati wahalaʿi ahli al-ḥirṣi,

Protect me from harmful desires and the frantic fear of the greedy.

وَصَوِّرْ فِي قَلْبِي مِثَالَ مَا ادَّخَرْتَ لِي مِنْ ثَوَابِكَ،

Waṣawwir fī qalbī mithāla mā iddakharta lī min thawābika,

Set before my heart an image of the reward You have stored for me

وَأَعْدَدْتَ لِخَصْمِي مِنْ جَزَائِكَ وَعِقَابِكَ.

Wa-aʿdadta likhaṣmī min jazāʾika waʿiqābika.

and the recompense and punishment You have prepared for my adversary.

وَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ سَبَبًا لِقَنَاعَتِي بِمَا قَضَيْتَ،

Wa-ijʿal dhālika sababan liqanāʿatī bimā qaḍayta,

Let this bring me contentment with what You have decreed

وَثِقَتِي بِمَا تَخَيَّرْتَ.

Wathiqatī bimā takhayyarta.

and trust in what You have chosen.

آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Āmīna rabba al-ʿālamīna.

Amen, Lord of all worlds.

إِنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ،

Innaka dhū al-faḍli al-ʿaẓīmi,

Yours is immense grace,

وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.

and You have power over all things.

الدُّعَاءُ ١٥

Al-duʿāʾu 15

Prayer 15

إِذَا مَرِضَ أَوْ نَزَلَ بِهِ كَرْبٌ أَوْ بَلِيَّةٌ

Idhā mariḍa aw nazala bihi karbun aw baliyyatun

When he was ill or faced distress or an affliction

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ

Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu

O God, praise belongs to You

عَلَى مَا لَمْ أَزَلْ أَتَصَرَّفُ فِيهِ مِنْ سَلَامَةِ بَدَنِي،

ʿalā mā lam azal ataṣarrafu fīhi min salāmati badanī,

for the bodily health in which I have continued to live and act.

وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى مَا أَحْدَثْتَ بِي مِنْ عِلَّةٍ فِي جَسَدِي.

Walaka al-ḥamdu ʿalā mā aḥdathta bī min ʿillatin fī jasadī.

Praise belongs to You for the illness You have brought upon my body.

فَمَا أَدْرِي يَا إِلَهِي أَيُّ الْحَالَيْنِ أَحَقُّ بِالشُّكْرِ لَكَ،

Famā adrī yā ilāhī ayyu al-ḥālayni aḥaqqu bi-al-shukri laka,

My God, I do not know which state deserves greater thanks to You,

وَأَيُّ الْوَقْتَيْنِ أَوْلَى بِالْحَمْدِ لَكَ،

Wa-ayyu al-waqtayni awlā bi-al-ḥamdi laka,

or which of these two times calls for greater praise:

أَوَقْتُ الصِّحَّةِ

Awaqtu al-ṣiḥḥati

the time of health,

الَّتِي هَنَّأْتَنِي فِيهَا طَيِّبَاتِ رِزْقِكَ،

Allatī hannaʾtanī fīhā ṭayyibāti rizqika,

when You allowed me to enjoy the good things You provide,

وَنَشَّطْتَنِي بِهَا لِابْتِغَاءِ مَرْضَاتِكَ وَفَضْلِكَ،

Wanashshaṭtanī bihā libtighāʾi marḍātika wafaḍlika,

gave me energy to seek Your pleasure and Your grace,

وَقَوَّيْتَنِي مَعَهَا

Waqawwaytanī maʿahā

and strengthened me

عَلَى مَا وَفَّقْتَنِي لَهُ مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ،

ʿalā mā waffaqtanī lahu min ṭāʿatika,

to perform the acts of obedience You enabled me to undertake;

أَمْ وَقْتُ الْعِلَّةِ الَّتِي مَحَّصْتَنِي بِهَا،

Am waqtu al-ʿillati allatī maḥḥaṣtanī bihā,

or the time of illness, through which You have purified me,

وَالنِّعَمِ الَّتِي أَتْحَفْتَنِي بِهَا،

Wa-al-niʿami allatī atḥaftanī bihā,

together with the blessings You have bestowed upon me,

تَخْفِيفًا لِمَا ثَقُلَ بِهِ عَلَيَّ ظَهْرِي مِنَ الْخَطِيئَاتِ،

Takhfīfan limā thaqula bihi ʿalayya ẓahrī mina al-khaṭīʾāti,

lightening the sins that have weighed so heavily upon my back,

وَتَطْهِيرًا لِمَا انْغَمَسْتُ فِيهِ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ،

Wataṭhīran limā inghamastu fīhi mina al-sayyiʾāti,

cleansing me of the wrongdoing in which I have become immersed,

وَتَنْبِيهًا لِتَنَاوُلِ التَّوْبَةِ،

Watanbīhan litanāwuli al-tawbati,

awakening me to take hold of repentance,

وَتَذْكِيرًا لِمَحْوِ الْحَوْبَةِ بِقَدِيمِ النِّعْمَةِ؟

Watadhkīran limaḥwi al-ḥawbati biqadīmi al-niʿmati?

and reminding me to erase my sin through Your longstanding favour?

وَفِي خِلَالِ ذَلِكَ مَا كَتَبَ لِيَ الْكَاتِبَانِ

Wafī khilāli dhālika mā kataba liya al-kātibāni

Amid all this, the two recording angels have written for me

مِنْ زَكِيِّ الْأَعْمَالِ،

Min zakiyyi al-aʿmāli,

a record of pure deeds

مَا لَا قَلْبٌ فَكَّرَ فِيهِ،

Mā lā qalbun fakkara fīhi,

which no heart has thought of,

وَلَا لِسَانٌ نَطَقَ بِهِ،

Walā lisānun naṭaqa bihi,

no tongue has spoken,

وَلَا جَارِحَةٌ تَكَلَّفَتْهُ،

Walā jāriḥatun takallafat-hu,

and no limb has laboured to perform,

بَلْ إِفْضَالًا مِنْكَ عَلَيَّ،

Bal ifḍālan minka ʿalayya,

solely through Your generosity towards me

وَإِحْسَانًا مِنْ صَنِيعِكَ إِلَيَّ.

Wa-iḥsānan min ṣanīʿika ilayya.

and the goodness with which You have treated me.

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَحَبِّبْ إِلَيَّ مَا رَضِيتَ لِي،

Waḥabbib ilayya mā raḍīta lī,

Make me love what You have chosen for me,

وَيَسِّرْ لِي مَا أَحْلَلْتَ بِي،

Wayassir lī mā aḥlalta bī,

and make what You have brought upon me easy to bear.

وَطَهِّرْنِي مِنْ دَنَسِ مَا أَسْلَفْتُ،

Waṭahhirnī min danasi mā aslaftu,

Purify me from the stain of my past deeds,

وَامْحُ عَنِّي شَرَّ مَا قَدَّمْتُ،

Wa-umḥu ʿannī sharra mā qaddamtu,

and erase the evil I have sent ahead.

وَأَوْجِدْنِي حَلَاوَةَ الْعَافِيَةِ،

Wa-awjidnī ḥalāwata al-ʿāfiyati,

Let me find the sweetness of wellbeing

وَأَذِقْنِي بَرْدَ السَّلَامَةِ.

Wa-adhiqnī barda al-salāmati.

and taste the cool relief of sound health.

وَاجْعَلْ مَخْرَجِي عَنْ عِلَّتِي إِلَى عَفْوِكَ،

Wa-ijʿal makhrajī ʿan ʿillatī ilā ʿafwika,

Let my emergence from illness lead me to Your pardon,

وَمُتَحَوَّلِي عَنْ صَرْعَتِي إِلَى تَجَاوُزِكَ،

Wamutaḥawwalī ʿan ṣarʿatī ilā tajāwuzika,

my recovery from being laid low to Your forgiveness,

وَخَلَاصِي مِنْ كَرْبِي إِلَى رَوْحِكَ،

Wakhalāṣī min karbī ilā rawḥika,

my release from distress to Your comforting mercy,

وَسَلَامَتِي مِنْ هَذِهِ الشِّدَّةِ إِلَى فَرَجِكَ.

Wasalāmatī min hādhihi al-shiddati ilā farajika.

and my recovery from this hardship to the relief You grant.

إِنَّكَ الْمُتَفَضِّلُ بِالْإِحْسَانِ،

Innaka al-mutafaḍḍilu bi-al-iḥsāni,

You freely bestow goodness,

الْمُتَطَوِّلُ بِالِامْتِنَانِ،

Al-mutaṭawwilu bi-al-imtināni,

shower us with favours,

الْوَهَّابُ الْكَرِيمُ، ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ.

Al-wahhābu al-karīmu, dhū al-jalāli wa-al-ikrāmi.

and give generously, Possessor of majesty and honour.

الدُّعَاءُ ١٦

Al-duʿāʾu 16

Prayer 16

إِذَا اسْتَقَالَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ

Idhā istaqāla min dhunūbihi

When he sought release from his sins

أَوْ تَضَرَّعَ فِي طَلَبِ الْعَفْوِ عَنْ عُيُوبِهِ

Aw taḍarraʿa fī ṭalabi al-ʿafwi ʿan ʿuyūbihi

or pleaded for pardon for his faults

اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ بِرَحْمَتِهِ يَسْتَغِيثُ الْمُذْنِبُونَ،

Allāhumma yā man biraḥmatihi yastaghīthu al-mudhnibūna,

O God, whose mercy sinners call upon for help,

وَيَا مَنْ إِلَى ذِكْرِ إِحْسَانِهِ يَفْزَعُ الْمُضْطَرُّونَ،

Wayā man ilā dhikri iḥsānihi yafzaʿu al-muḍṭarrūna,

in remembrance of whose goodness the desperate seek refuge,

وَيَا مَنْ لِخِيفَتِهِ يَنْتَحِبُ الْخَاطِئُونَ،

Wayā man likhīfatihi yantaḥibu al-khāṭiʾūna,

before whom those who have sinned weep in fear,

يَا أُنْسَ كُلِّ مُسْتَوْحِشٍ غَرِيبٍ،

Yā unsa kulli mustawḥishin gharībin,

O comfort of every lonely stranger,

وَيَا فَرَجَ كُلِّ مَكْرُوبٍ كَئِيبٍ،

Wayā faraja kulli makrūbin kaʾībin,

relief of everyone burdened by distress and sorrow,

وَيَا غَوْثَ كُلِّ مَخْذُولٍ فَرِيدٍ،

Wayā ghawtha kulli makhdhūlin farīdin,

help of everyone abandoned and alone,

وَيَا عَضُدَ كُلِّ مُحْتَاجٍ طَرِيدٍ.

Wayā ʿaḍuda kulli muḥtājin ṭarīdin.

and support of everyone needy and driven away.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي وَسِعْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ رَحْمَةً وَعِلْمًا،

Anta alladhī wasiʿta kulla shayʾin raḥmatan waʿilman,

You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي جَعَلْتَ لِكُلِّ مَخْلُوقٍ فِي نِعَمِكَ سَهْمًا،

Wa-anta alladhī jaʿalta likulli makhlūqin fī niʿamika sahman,

You give every creature a share in Your blessings.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي عَفْوُهُ أَعْلَى مِنْ عِقَابِهِ،

Wa-anta alladhī ʿafwuhu aʿlā min ʿiqābihi,

Your pardon surpasses Your punishment,

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي تَسْعَى رَحْمَتُهُ أَمَامَ غَضَبِهِ،

Wa-anta alladhī tasʿā raḥmatuhu amāma ghaḍabihi,

and Your mercy goes ahead of Your anger.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي عَطَاؤُهُ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ مَنْعِهِ،

Wa-anta alladhī ʿaṭāʾuhu aktharu min manʿihi,

You give more than You withhold,

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي اتَّسَعَ الْخَلَائِقُ كُلُّهُمْ فِي رَحْمَتِهِ،

Wa-anta alladhī ittasaʿa al-khalāʾiqu kulluhum fī raḥmatihi,

and all creatures find ample room within Your mercy.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي لَا يَرْغَبُ فِي جَزَاءِ مَنْ أَعْطَاهُ،

Wa-anta alladhī lā yarghabu fī jazāʾi man aʿṭāhu,

You seek no repayment from those to whom You give,

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي لَا يُفْرِطُ فِي عِقَابِ مَنْ عَصَاهُ.

Wa-anta alladhī lā yufriṭu fī ʿiqābi man ʿaṣāhu.

and do not punish those who disobey You beyond what is just.

وَأَنَا يَا إِلَهِي عَبْدُكَ الَّذِي أَمَرْتَهُ بِالدُّعَاءِ،

Wa-anā yā ilāhī ʿabduka alladhī amartahu bi-al-duʿāʾi,

My God, I am Your servant whom You commanded to pray,

فَقَالَ: لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ.

Faqāla: labbayka wasaʿdayka.

and who answered: Here I am, ready to serve You.

هَا أَنَا ذَا يَا رَبِّ مَطْرُوحٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ،

Hā anā dhā yā rabbi maṭrūḥun bayna yadayka,

Here I am, my Lord, cast down before You.

أَنَا الَّذِي أَوْقَرَتِ الْخَطَايَا ظَهْرَهُ،

Anā alladhī awqarati al-khaṭāyā ẓahrahu,

I am the one whose back is laden with wrongdoing,

وَأَنَا الَّذِي أَفْنَتِ الذُّنُوبُ عُمُرَهُ،

Wa-anā alladhī afnati al-dhunūbu ʿumurahu,

whose life sins have consumed,

وَأَنَا الَّذِي بِجَهْلِهِ عَصَاكَ،

Wa-anā alladhī bijahlihi ʿaṣāka,

who has disobeyed You through his ignorance,

وَلَمْ تَكُنْ أَهْلًا مِنْهُ لِذَاكَ.

Walam takun ahlan minhu lidhāka.

though You never deserved such treatment from him.

هَلْ أَنْتَ يَا إِلَهِي رَاحِمٌ مَنْ دَعَاكَ،

Hal anta yā ilāhī rāḥimun man daʿāka,

My God, will You have mercy on one who calls upon You,

فَأُبْلِغَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ؟

Fa-ubligha fī al-duʿāʾi?

so that I may give myself fully to prayer?

أَمْ أَنْتَ غَافِرٌ لِمَنْ بَكَاكَ،

Am anta ghāfirun liman bakāka,

Will You forgive one who weeps before You,

فَأُسْرِعَ فِي الْبُكَاءِ؟

Fa-usriʿa fī al-bukāʾi?

so that I may hasten to weep?

أَمْ أَنْتَ مُتَجَاوِزٌ عَمَّنْ عَفَّرَ لَكَ وَجْهَهُ تَذَلُّلًا؟

Am anta mutajāwizun ʿamman ʿaffara laka wajhahu tadhallulan?

Will You pardon one who humbly presses his face into the dust for You?

أَمْ أَنْتَ مُغْنٍ مَنْ شَكَا إِلَيْكَ فَقْرَهُ تَوَكُّلًا؟

Am anta mughnin man shakā ilayka faqrahu tawakkulan?

Will You meet the need of one who brings You his poverty in trust?

إِلَهِي لَا تُخَيِّبْ مَنْ لَا يَجِدُ مُعْطِيًا غَيْرَكَ،

Ilāhī lā tukhayyib man lā yajidu muʿṭiyan ghayraka,

My God, do not disappoint one who finds no giver besides You.

وَلَا تَخْذُلْ مَنْ لَا يَسْتَغْنِي عَنْكَ بِأَحَدٍ دُونَكَ.

Walā takhdhul man lā yastaghnī ʿanka biʾaḥadin dūnaka.

Do not abandon one for whom no one else can take Your place.

إِلَهِي فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Ilāhī faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

My God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَلَا تُعْرِضْ عَنِّي وَقَدْ أَقْبَلْتُ عَلَيْكَ،

Walā tuʿriḍ ʿannī waqad aqbaltu ʿalayka,

Do not turn away from me when I have turned towards You.

وَلَا تَحْرِمْنِي وَقَدْ رَغِبْتُ إِلَيْكَ،

Walā taḥrimnī waqad raghibtu ilayka,

Do not deprive me when I have placed my longing in You.

وَلَا تَجْبَهْنِي بِالرَّدِّ وَقَدِ انْتَصَبْتُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ.

Walā tajbahnī bi-al-raddi waqadi intaṣabtu bayna yadayka.

Do not meet me with rejection when I stand before You.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي وَصَفْتَ نَفْسَكَ بِالرَّحْمَةِ،

Anta alladhī waṣafta nafsaka bi-al-raḥmati,

You have described Yourself as merciful;

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَارْحَمْنِي.

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-irḥamnī.

bless Muhammad and his family, and have mercy on me.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي سَمَّيْتَ نَفْسَكَ بِالْعَفْوِ، فَاعْفُ عَنِّي.

Wa-anta alladhī sammayta nafsaka bi-al-ʿafwi, fa-uʿfu ʿannī.

You have named Yourself the Pardoner; pardon me.

قَدْ تَرَى يَا إِلَهِي فَيْضَ دَمْعِي مِنْ خِيفَتِكَ،

Qad tarā yā ilāhī fayḍa damʿī min khīfatika,

My God, You see my tears flowing from fear of You,

وَوَجِيبَ قَلْبِي مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ،

Wawajība qalbī min khashyatika,

my heart pounding in awe of You,

وَانْتِفَاضَ جَوَارِحِي مِنْ هَيْبَتِكَ.

Wa-intifāḍa jawāriḥī min haybatika.

and my limbs trembling before Your majesty.

كُلُّ ذَلِكَ حَيَاءٌ مِنْكَ لِسُوءِ عَمَلِي،

Kullu dhālika ḥayāʾun minka lisūʾi ʿamalī,

All this comes from shame before You for my evil deeds.

وَلِذَاكَ خَمَدَ صَوْتِي عَنِ الْجَأْرِ إِلَيْكَ،

Walidhāka khamada ṣawtī ʿani al-jaʾri ilayka,

That shame has stilled my voice from crying out to You

وَكَلَّ لِسَانِي عَنْ مُنَاجَاتِكَ.

Wakalla lisānī ʿan munājātika.

and left my tongue unable to speak intimately with You.

يَا إِلَهِي فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ،

Yā ilāhī falaka al-ḥamdu,

My God, praise belongs to You.

فَكَمْ مِنْ عَائِبَةٍ سَتَرْتَهَا عَلَيَّ فَلَمْ تَفْضَحْنِي،

Fakam min ʿāʾibatin satartahā ʿalayya falam tafḍaḥnī,

How many faults You have concealed, sparing me disgrace;

وَكَمْ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ غَطَّيْتَهُ عَلَيَّ فَلَمْ تَشْهَرْنِي،

Wakam min dhanbin ghaṭṭaytahu ʿalayya falam tashharnī,

how many sins You have covered without making me notorious;

وَكَمْ مِنْ شَائِبَةٍ أَلْمَمْتُ بِهَا

Wakam min shāʾibatin almamtu bihā

how many stains I have brought upon myself,

فَلَمْ تَهْتِكْ عَنِّي سِتْرَهَا،

Falam tahtik ʿannī sitrahā,

yet You have not torn away their covering,

وَلَمْ تُقَلِّدْنِي مَكْرُوهَ شَنَارِهَا،

Walam tuqallidnī makrūha shanārihā,

or hung their hateful shame around my neck,

وَلَمْ تُبْدِ سَوْأَتَهَا

Walam tubdi sawʾatahā

or exposed their ugliness

لِمَنْ يَلْتَمِسُ مَعَايِبِي مِنْ جِيرَتِي،

Liman yaltamisu maʿāyibī min jīratī,

to neighbours who search out my faults

وَحَسَدَةِ نِعْمَتِكَ عِنْدِي.

Waḥasadati niʿmatika ʿindī.

or those who envy the blessings You have given me.

ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْهَنِي ذَلِكَ

Thumma lam yanhanī dhālika

Yet even this did not restrain me

عَنْ أَنْ جَرَيْتُ إِلَى سُوءِ مَا عَهِدْتَ مِنِّي.

ʿan an jaraytu ilā sūʾi mā ʿahidta minnī.

from rushing back to the evil You have known in me.

فَمَنْ أَجْهَلُ مِنِّي يَا إِلَهِي بِرُشْدِهِ،

Faman ajhalu minnī yā ilāhī birushdihi,

My God, who is more ignorant than I of the way to his own good?

وَمَنْ أَغْفَلُ مِنِّي عَنْ حَظِّهِ،

Waman aghfalu minnī ʿan ḥaẓẓihi,

Who is more heedless than I of what benefits him?

وَمَنْ أَبْعَدُ مِنِّي مِنِ اسْتِصْلَاحِ نَفْسِهِ،

Waman abʿadu minnī mini istiṣlāḥi nafsihi,

Who is further than I from setting himself right,

حِينَ أُنْفِقُ مَا أَجْرَيْتَ عَلَيَّ مِنْ رِزْقِكَ

Ḥīna unfiqu mā ajrayta ʿalayya min rizqika

when I spend the sustenance You have provided me

فِيمَا نَهَيْتَنِي عَنْهُ مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ؟

Fīmā nahaytanī ʿanhu min maʿṣiyatika?

on the disobedience You have forbidden?

وَمَنْ أَبْعَدُ غَوْرًا فِي الْبَاطِلِ،

Waman abʿadu ghawran fī al-bāṭili,

Who sinks deeper into falsehood,

وَأَشَدُّ إِقْدَامًا عَلَى السُّوءِ مِنِّي،

Wa-ashaddu iqdāman ʿalā al-sūʾi minnī,

or rushes more boldly into evil than I,

حِينَ أَقِفُ بَيْنَ دَعْوَتِكَ وَدَعْوَةِ الشَّيْطَانِ،

Ḥīna aqifu bayna daʿwatika wadaʿwati al-shayṭāni,

when I stand between Your call and Satan’s call,

فَأَتَّبِعُ دَعْوَتَهُ

Fa-attabiʿu daʿwatahu

and follow his call,

عَلَى غَيْرِ عَمًى مِنِّي فِي مَعْرِفَةٍ بِهِ،

ʿalā ghayri ʿaman minnī fī maʿrifatin bihi,

although I am not blind to who he is

وَلَا نِسْيَانٍ مِنْ حِفْظِي لَهُ،

Walā nisyānin min ḥifẓī lahu,

and have not forgotten what I know of him?

وَأَنَا حِينَئِذٍ مُوقِنٌ

Wa-anā ḥīnaʾidhin mūqinun

At that very moment I know with certainty

بِأَنَّ مُنْتَهَى دَعْوَتِكَ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ،

Biʾanna muntahā daʿwatika ilā al-jannati,

that Your call leads ultimately to the Garden,

وَمُنْتَهَى دَعْوَتِهِ إِلَى النَّارِ.

Wamuntahā daʿwatihi ilā al-nāri.

while his call leads to the Fire.

سُبْحَانَكَ مَا أَعْجَبَ مَا أَشْهَدُ بِهِ

Subḥānaka mā aʿjaba mā ashhadu bihi

Glory be to You! How astonishing is the testimony I give

عَلَى نَفْسِي وَأُعَدِّدُهُ مِنْ مَكْتُومِ أَمْرِي،

ʿalā nafsī wa-uʿaddiduhu min maktūmi amrī,

against myself, as I recount the secrets of my conduct.

وَأَعْجَبُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ أَنَاتُكَ عَنِّي

Wa-aʿjabu min dhālika anātuka ʿannī

More astonishing still is Your patience with me

وَإِبْطَاؤُكَ عَنْ مُعَاجَلَتِي.

Wa-ibṭāʾuka ʿan muʿājalatī.

and Your delay in punishing me at once.

وَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ كَرَمِي عَلَيْكَ،

Walaysa dhālika min karamī ʿalayka,

This is not because of any worth I have in Your sight,

بَلْ تَأَنِّيًا مِنْكَ لِي وَتَفَضُّلًا مِنْكَ عَلَيَّ،

Bal taʾanniyan minka lī watafaḍḍulan minka ʿalayya,

but because You are patient and gracious towards me,

لِأَنْ أَرْتَدِعَ عَنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ الْمُسْخِطَةِ

Liʾan artadiʿa ʿan maʿṣiyatika al-muskhiṭati

so that I may cease the disobedience that angers You

وَأُقْلِعَ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِيَ الْمُخْلِقَةِ،

Wa-uqliʿa ʿan sayyiʾātiya al-mukhliqati,

and give up the misdeeds that wear me down,

وَلِأَنَّ عَفْوَكَ عَنِّي أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِي.

Waliʾanna ʿafwaka ʿannī aḥabbu ilayka min ʿuqūbatī.

and because pardoning me is dearer to You than punishing me.

بَلْ أَنَا يَا إِلَهِي أَكْثَرُ ذُنُوبًا،

Bal anā yā ilāhī aktharu dhunūban,

My God, my sins are too numerous,

وَأَقْبَحُ آثَارًا وَأَشْنَعُ أَفْعَالًا،

Wa-aqbaḥu āthāran wa-ashnaʿu afʿālan,

their traces too ugly, my actions too shameful,

وَأَشَدُّ فِي الْبَاطِلِ تَهَوُّرًا،

Wa-ashaddu fī al-bāṭili tahawwuran,

my recklessness in falsehood too great,

وَأَضْعَفُ عِنْدَ طَاعَتِكَ تَيَقُّظًا،

Wa-aḍʿafu ʿinda ṭāʿatika tayaqquẓan,

my wakefulness in obeying You too weak,

وَأَقَلُّ لِوَعِيدِكَ انْتِبَاهًا وَارْتِقَابًا،

Wa-aqallu liwaʿīdika intibāhan wa-irtiqāban,

and my attention and vigilance towards Your warning too slight,

مِنْ أَنْ أُحْصِيَ لَكَ عُيُوبِي

Min an uḥṣiya laka ʿuyūbī

for me to count out my faults before You

أَوْ أَقْدِرَ عَلَى ذِكْرِ ذُنُوبِي.

Aw aqdira ʿalā dhikri dhunūbī.

or be able to recount all my sins.

وَإِنَّمَا أُوَبِّخُ بِهَذَا نَفْسِي

Wa-innamā uwabbikhu bi-hādhā nafsī

I reproach myself with these words

طَمَعًا فِي رَأْفَتِكَ

Ṭamaʿan fī raʾfatika

only in longing for Your kindness,

الَّتِي بِهَا صَلَاحُ أَمْرِ الْمُذْنِبِينَ،

Allatī bihā ṣalāḥu amri al-mudhnibīna,

through which the affairs of sinners are set right,

وَرَجَاءً لِرَحْمَتِكَ

Warajāʾan liraḥmatika

and in hope of Your mercy,

الَّتِي بِهَا فَكَاكُ رِقَابِ الْخَاطِئِينَ.

Allatī bihā fakāku riqābi al-khāṭiʾīna.

through which those who have sinned are set free.

اللَّهُمَّ وَهَذِهِ رَقَبَتِي قَدْ أَرَقَّتْهَا الذُّنُوبُ،

Allāhumma wa-hādhihi raqabatī qad araqqat-hā al-dhunūbu,

O God, here is my neck: sins have placed it in bondage.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَعْتِقْهَا بِعَفْوِكَ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-aʿtiqhā biʿafwika,

Bless Muhammad and his family, and set it free through Your pardon.

وَهَذَا ظَهْرِي قَدْ أَثْقَلَتْهُ الْخَطَايَا،

Wa-hādhā ẓahrī qad athqalat-hu al-khaṭāyā,

Here is my back: wrongdoing has weighed it down.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَخَفِّفْ عَنْهُ بِمَنِّكَ.

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wakhaffif ʿanhu bimannika.

Bless Muhammad and his family, and lighten it through Your favour.

يَا إِلَهِي لَوْ بَكَيْتُ إِلَيْكَ حَتَّى تَسْقُطَ أَشْفَارُ عَيْنَيَّ،

Yā ilāhī law bakaytu ilayka ḥattā tasquṭa ashfāru ʿaynayya,

My God, even if I wept before You until my eyelashes fell out,

وَانْتَحَبْتُ حَتَّى يَنْقَطِعَ صَوْتِي،

Wa-intaḥabtu ḥattā yanqaṭiʿa ṣawtī,

sobbed until my voice gave out,

وَقُمْتُ لَكَ حَتَّى تَتَنَشَّرَ قَدَمَايَ،

Waqumtu laka ḥattā tatanashshara qadamāya,

stood in prayer to You until my feet split apart,

وَرَكَعْتُ لَكَ حَتَّى يَنْخَلِعَ صُلْبِي،

Warakaʿtu laka ḥattā yankhaliʿa ṣulbī,

bowed before You until my backbone came apart,

وَسَجَدْتُ لَكَ حَتَّى تَتَفَقَّأَ حَدَقَتَايَ،

Wasajadtu laka ḥattā tatafaqqaʾa ḥadaqatāya,

prostrated to You until my eyeballs burst,

وَأَكَلْتُ تُرَابَ الْأَرْضِ طُولَ عُمُرِي،

Wa-akaltu turāba al-arḍi ṭūla ʿumurī,

ate the dust of the earth throughout my life,

وَشَرِبْتُ مَاءَ الرَّمَادِ آخِرَ دَهْرِي،

Washaribtu māʾa al-ramādi ākhira dahrī,

and drank water mixed with ashes to the end of my days;

وَذَكَرْتُكَ فِي خِلَالِ ذَلِكَ حَتَّى يَكِلَّ لِسَانِي،

Wadhakartuka fī khilāli dhālika ḥattā yakilla lisānī,

even if through all this I remembered You until my tongue grew weary,

ثُمَّ لَمْ أَرْفَعْ طَرْفِي إِلَى آفَاقِ السَّمَاءِ اسْتِحْيَاءً مِنْكَ،

Thumma lam arfaʿ ṭarfī ilā āfāqi al-samāʾi istiḥyāʾan minka,

and never raised my eyes to the horizons of heaven from shame before You,

مَا اسْتَوْجَبْتُ بِذَلِكَ

Mā istawjabtu bi-dhālika

none of this would earn for me

مَحْوَ سَيِّئَةٍ وَاحِدَةٍ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِي.

Maḥwa sayyiʾatin wāḥidatin min sayyiʾātī.

the erasure of even one of my misdeeds.

وَإِنْ كُنْتَ تَغْفِرُ لِي حِينَ أَسْتَوْجِبُ مَغْفِرَتَكَ،

Wa-in kunta taghfiru lī ḥīna astawjibu maghfirataka,

Even if You forgive me when I become worthy of Your forgiveness,

وَتَعْفُو عَنِّي حِينَ أَسْتَحِقُّ عَفْوَكَ،

Wataʿfū ʿannī ḥīna astaḥiqqu ʿafwaka,

and pardon me when I deserve Your pardon,

فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ غَيْرُ وَاجِبٍ لِي بِاسْتِحْقَاقٍ،

Fa-inna dhālika ghayru wājibin lī bistiḥqāqin,

this is never something owed to me as a right,

وَلَا أَنَا أَهْلٌ لَهُ بِاسْتِيجَابٍ،

Walā anā ahlun lahu bistījābin,

nor can I claim to have earned it,

إِذْ كَانَ جَزَائِي مِنْكَ فِي أَوَّلِ مَا عَصَيْتُكَ النَّارَ.

Idh kāna jazāʾī minka fī awwali mā ʿaṣaytuka al-nāra.

for from my first disobedience to You, my recompense was the Fire.

فَإِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي فَأَنْتَ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ لِي.

Fa-in tuʿadhdhibnī fa-anta ghayru ẓālimin lī.

If You punish me, You do me no injustice.

إِلَهِي فَإِذْ قَدْ تَغَمَّدْتَنِي بِسِتْرِكَ فَلَمْ تَفْضَحْنِي،

Ilāhī fa-idh qad taghammadtanī bisitrika falam tafḍaḥnī,

My God, You have wrapped me in concealment and spared me disgrace,

وَتَأَنَّيْتَنِي بِكَرَمِكَ فَلَمْ تُعَاجِلْنِي،

Wataʾannaytanī bikaramika falam tuʿājilnī,

shown me generous patience and not hastened to punish me,

وَحَلُمْتَ عَنِّي بِتَفَضُّلِكَ،

Waḥalumta ʿannī bitafaḍḍulika,

and graciously borne with me,

فَلَمْ تُغَيِّرْ نِعْمَتَكَ عَلَيَّ،

Falam tughayyir niʿmataka ʿalayya,

without withdrawing Your blessing from me

وَلَمْ تُكَدِّرْ مَعْرُوفَكَ عِنْدِي.

Walam tukaddir maʿrūfaka ʿindī.

or spoiling the goodness You have shown me.

فَارْحَمْ طُولَ تَضَرُّعِي،

Fa-irḥam ṭūla taḍarruʿī,

Have mercy, then, on my prolonged pleading,

وَشِدَّةَ مَسْكَنَتِي وَسُوءَ مَوْقِفِي.

Washiddata maskanatī wasūʾa mawqifī.

my desperate need, and the sorry state in which I stand.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَقِنِي مِنَ الْمَعَاصِي وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِالطَّاعَةِ،

Waqinī mina al-maʿāṣī wa-istaʿmilnī bi-al-ṭāʿati,

Protect me from disobedience and employ me in obedience.

وَارْزُقْنِي حُسْنَ الْإِنَابَةِ وَطَهِّرْنِي بِالتَّوْبَةِ،

Wa-urzuqnī ḥusna al-inābati waṭahhirnī bi-al-tawbati,

Grant me a sincere return to You and purify me through repentance.

وَأَيِّدْنِي بِالْعِصْمَةِ وَاسْتَصْلِحْنِي بِالْعَافِيَةِ،

Wa-ayyidnī bi-al-ʿiṣmati wa-istaṣliḥnī bi-al-ʿāfiyati,

Sustain me with Your protection and set me right through wellbeing.

وَأَذِقْنِي حَلَاوَةَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ،

Wa-adhiqnī ḥalāwata al-maghfirati,

Let me taste the sweetness of forgiveness.

وَاجْعَلْنِي طَلِيقَ عَفْوِكَ وَعَتِيقَ رَحْمَتِكَ،

Wa-ijʿalnī ṭalīqa ʿafwika waʿatīqa raḥmatika,

Release me through Your pardon and free me through Your mercy.

وَاكْتُبْ لِي أَمَانًا مِنْ سَخَطِكَ،

Wa-uktub lī amānan min sakhaṭika,

Decree for me safety from Your anger.

وَبَشِّرْنِي بِذَلِكَ فِي الْعَاجِلِ دُونَ الْآجِلِ،

Wabashshirnī bi-dhālika fī al-ʿājili dūna al-ājili,

Give me its glad news in this present life, before the life to come,

بُشْرَى أَعْرِفُهَا،

Bushrā aʿrifuhā,

glad news that I can recognize,

وَعَرِّفْنِي فِيهِ عَلَامَةً أَتَبَيَّنُهَا.

Waʿarrifnī fīhi ʿalāmatan atabayyanuhā.

and show me a sign of it that I can clearly discern.

إِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَا يَضِيقُ عَلَيْكَ فِي وُسْعِكَ،

Inna dhālika lā yaḍīqu ʿalayka fī wusʿika,

Your abundance is not too narrow for this,

وَلَا يَتَكَأَّدُكَ فِي قُدْرَتِكَ،

Walā yatakaʾʾaduka fī qudratika,

nor does it strain Your power,

وَلَا يَتَصَعَّدُكَ فِي أَنَاتِكَ،

Walā yataṣaʿʿaduka fī anātika,

tax Your patience,

وَلَا يَئُودُكَ فِي جَزِيلِ هِبَاتِكَ

Walā yaʾūduka fī jazīli hibātika

or burden You amid Your lavish gifts,

الَّتِي دَلَّتْ عَلَيْهَا آيَاتُكَ.

Allatī dallat ʿalayhā āyātuka.

to which Your signs bear witness.

إِنَّكَ تَفْعَلُ مَا تَشَاءُ وَتَحْكُمُ مَا تُرِيدُ،

Innaka tafʿalu mā tashāʾu wataḥkumu mā turīdu,

You do whatever You will and decree whatever You desire.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.

You have power over all things.

الدُّعَاءُ ١٧

Al-duʿāʾu 17

Prayer 17

إِذَا ذَكَرَ الشَّيْطَانَ فَاسْتَعَاذَ مِنْهُ

Idhā dhakara al-shayṭāna fa-istaʿādha minhu

When he remembered Satan and sought refuge from him

وَمِنْ عَدَاوَتِهِ وَكَيْدِهِ

Wamin ʿadāwatihi wakaydihi

and from his hostility and scheming

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ نَزَغَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ،

Allāhumma innā naʿūdhu bika min nazaghāti al-shayṭāni al-rajīmi,

O God, we seek refuge in You from the promptings of Satan, the outcast,

وَكَيْدِهِ وَمَكَائِدِهِ،

Wakaydihi wamakāʾidihi,

from his cunning and his plots,

وَمِنَ الثِّقَةِ بِأَمَانِيِّهِ وَمَوَاعِيدِهِ،

Wamina al-thiqati biʾamāniyyihi wamawāʿīdihi,

and from trusting the fantasies and promises he offers,

وَغُرُورِهِ وَمَصَائِدِهِ،

Waghurūrihi wamaṣāʾidihi,

his deceptions and his snares.

وَأَنْ يُطْمِعَ نَفْسَهُ فِي إِضْلَالِنَا عَنْ طَاعَتِكَ

Wa-an yuṭmiʿa nafsahu fī iḍlālinā ʿan ṭāʿatika

Protect us from his hoping to lead us away from obedience to You

وَامْتِهَانِنَا بِمَعْصِيَتِكَ،

Wa-imtihāninā bimaʿṣiyatika,

and degrade us through disobedience to You;

أَوْ أَنْ يَحْسُنَ عِنْدَنَا مَا حَسَّنَ لَنَا،

Aw an yaḥsuna ʿindanā mā ḥassana lanā,

from finding attractive what he makes attractive to us,

أَوْ أَنْ يَثْقُلَ عَلَيْنَا مَا كَرَّهَ إِلَيْنَا.

Aw an yathqula ʿalaynā mā karraha ilaynā.

or finding burdensome what he makes us dislike.

اللَّهُمَّ اخْسَأْهُ عَنَّا بِعِبَادَتِكَ،

Allāhumma ikhsaʾhu ʿannā biʿibādatika,

O God, drive him away through our worship of You,

وَاكْبِتْهُ بِدُؤُوبِنَا فِي مَحَبَّتِكَ،

Wa-ikbit-hu biduʾūbinā fī maḥabbatika,

and defeat him through our steadfast devotion to Your love.

وَاجْعَلْ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَهُ سِتْرًا لَا يَهْتِكُهُ،

Wa-ijʿal baynanā wabaynahu sitran lā yahtikuhu,

Place between us and him a veil he cannot tear,

وَرَدْمًا مُصْمَتًا لَا يَفْتُقُهُ.

Waradman muṣmatan lā yaftuquhu.

and a solid barrier he cannot breach.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاشْغَلْهُ عَنَّا بِبَعْضِ أَعْدَائِكَ،

Wa-ishghalhu ʿannā bibaʿḍi aʿdāʾika,

Keep him occupied away from us with some of Your enemies.

وَاعْصِمْنَا مِنْهُ بِحُسْنِ رِعَايَتِكَ،

Wa-iʿṣimnā minhu biḥusni riʿāyatika,

Protect us from him through Your gracious care.

وَاكْفِنَا خَتْرَهُ،

Wa-ikfinā khatrahu,

Spare us his treachery,

وَوَلِّنَا ظَهْرَهُ،

Wawallinā ẓahrahu,

make him turn his back to us in flight,

وَاقْطَعْ عَنَّا إِثْرَهُ.

Wa-iqṭaʿ ʿannā ithrahu.

and cut short his pursuit of us.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَمْتِعْنَا مِنَ الْهُدَى بِمِثْلِ ضَلَالَتِهِ،

Wa-amtiʿnā mina al-hudā bimithli ḍalālatihi,

Grant us guidance in measure equal to his misguidance.

وَزَوِّدْنَا مِنَ التَّقْوَى ضِدَّ غَوَايَتِهِ،

Wazawwidnā mina al-taqwā ḍidda ghawāyatihi,

Equip us with reverence for You to oppose his seduction.

وَاسْلُكْ بِنَا مِنَ التُّقَى خِلَافَ سَبِيلِهِ مِنَ الرَّدَى.

Wa-usluk binā mina al-tuqā khilāfa sabīlihi mina al-radā.

Lead us along the path of piety, away from his road to ruin.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْ لَهُ فِي قُلُوبِنَا مَدْخَلًا،

Allāhumma lā tajʿal lahu fī qulūbinā madkhalan,

O God, give him no entry into our hearts,

وَلَا تُوَطِّنَنَّ لَهُ فِيمَا لَدَيْنَا مَنْزِلًا.

Walā tuwaṭṭinanna lahu fīmā ladaynā manzilan.

and let him establish no dwelling in anything that belongs to us.

اللَّهُمَّ وَمَا سَوَّلَ لَنَا مِنْ بَاطِلٍ فَعَرِّفْنَاهُ،

Allāhumma wamā sawwala lanā min bāṭilin faʿarrifnāhu,

O God, show us the falsehood with which he tempts us.

وَإِذَا عَرَّفْتَنَاهُ فَقِنَاهُ،

Wa-idhā ʿarraftanāhu faqināhu,

Once You have made it known to us, protect us from it.

وَبَصِّرْنَا مَا نُكَايِدُهُ بِهِ،

Wabaṣṣirnā mā nukāyiduhu bihi,

Show us how to counter his schemes,

وَأَلْهِمْنَا مَا نُعِدُّهُ لَهُ،

Wa-alhimnā mā nuʿidduhu lahu,

and inspire us with what to prepare against him.

وَأَيْقِظْنَا عَنْ سِنَةِ الْغَفْلَةِ بِالرُّكُونِ إِلَيْهِ،

Wa-ayqiẓnā ʿan sinati al-ghaflati bi-al-rukūni ilayhi,

Wake us from the heedless drowsiness of leaning towards him,

وَأَحْسِنْ بِتَوْفِيقِكَ عَوْنَنَا عَلَيْهِ.

Wa-aḥsin bitawfīqika ʿawnanā ʿalayhi.

and graciously help us against him through Your enabling grace.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَشْرِبْ قُلُوبَنَا إِنْكَارَ عَمَلِهِ،

Allāhumma wa-ashrib qulūbanā inkāra ʿamalihi,

O God, let rejection of his work soak into our hearts,

وَالْطُفْ لَنَا فِي نَقْضِ حِيَلِهِ.

Wa-ulṭuf lanā fī naqḍi ḥiyalihi.

and be kind to us by undoing his devices.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَحَوِّلْ سُلْطَانَهُ عَنَّا،

Waḥawwil sulṭānahu ʿannā,

Turn his power away from us,

وَاقْطَعْ رَجَاءَهُ مِنَّا،

Wa-iqṭaʿ rajāʾahu minnā,

cut off his hopes of winning us,

وَادْرَأْهُ عَنِ الْوُلُوعِ بِنَا.

Wa-idraʾhu ʿani al-wulūʿi binā.

and keep him from fastening himself upon us.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْ آبَاءَنَا وَأُمَّهَاتِنَا،

Wa-ijʿal ābāʾanā wa-ummahātinā,

Place our fathers and mothers,

وَأَوْلَادَنَا وَأَهَالِينَا،

Wa-awlādanā wa-ahālīnā,

our children and households,

وَذَوِي أَرْحَامِنَا وَقَرَابَاتِنَا وَجِيرَانَنَا،

Wadhawī arḥāminā waqarābātinā wajīrānanā,

our kin, relatives, and neighbours,

مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ،

Mina al-muʾminīna wa-al-muʾmināti,

among believing men and women,

مِنْهُ فِي حِرْزٍ حَارِزٍ وَحِصْنٍ حَافِظٍ وَكَهْفٍ مَانِعٍ،

Minhu fī ḥirzin ḥārizin waḥiṣnin ḥāfiẓin wakahfin māniʿin,

in a secure refuge, a guarding fortress, and a shelter safe from him.

وَأَلْبِسْهُمْ مِنْهُ جُنَنًا وَاقِيَةً.

Wa-albis-hum minhu junanan wāqiyatan.

Clothe them in armour that shields them from him.

اللَّهُمَّ وَاعْمُمْ بِذَلِكَ مَنْ شَهِدَ لَكَ بِالرُّبُوبِيَّةِ،

Allāhumma wa-uʿmum bi-dhālika man shahida laka bi-al-rubūbiyyati,

O God, extend this to everyone who bears witness to Your lordship,

وَأَخْلَصَ لَكَ بِالْوَحْدَانِيَّةِ،

Wa-akhlaṣa laka bi-al-waḥdāniyyati,

sincerely affirms Your oneness,

وَعَادَاهُ لَكَ بِحَقِيقَةِ الْعُبُودِيَّةِ،

Waʿādāhu laka biḥaqīqati al-ʿubūdiyyati,

opposes him for Your sake in true servanthood,

وَاسْتَظْهَرَ بِكَ عَلَيْهِ فِي مَعْرِفَةِ الْعُلُومِ الرَّبَّانِيَّةِ.

Wa-istaẓhara bika ʿalayhi fī maʿrifati al-ʿulūmi al-rabbāniyyati.

and seeks Your strength against him through knowledge of divine truths.

اللَّهُمَّ احْلُلْ مَا عَقَدَ،

Allāhumma uḥlul mā ʿaqada,

O God, loosen what he has knotted,

وَافْتُقْ مَا رَتَقَ،

Wa-uftuq mā rataqa,

tear apart what he has sewn together,

وَافْسَخْ مَا دَبَّرَ،

Wa-ifsakh mā dabbara,

undo what he has planned,

وَثَبِّطْهُ إِذَا عَزَمَ،

Wathabbiṭhu idhā ʿazama,

hold him back when he resolves to act,

وَانْقُضْ مَا أَبْرَمَ.

Wa-unquḍ mā abrama.

and unravel what he has firmly secured.

اللَّهُمَّ وَاهْزِمْ جُنْدَهُ وَأَبْطِلْ كَيْدَهُ،

Allāhumma wa-ihzim jundahu wa-abṭil kaydahu,

O God, defeat his army and frustrate his scheming,

وَاهْدِمْ كَهْفَهُ وَأَرْغِمْ أَنْفَهُ.

Wa-ihdim kahfahu wa-arghim anfahu.

demolish his stronghold and bring his pride down into the dust.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنَا فِي نَظْمِ أَعْدَائِهِ،

Allāhumma ijʿalnā fī naẓmi aʿdāʾihi,

O God, place us in the ranks of his enemies,

وَاعْزِلْنَا عَنْ عِدَادِ أَوْلِيَائِهِ،

Wa-iʿzilnā ʿan ʿidādi awliyāʾihi,

and keep us apart from the number of his allies.

لَا نُطِيعُ لَهُ إِذَا اسْتَهْوَانَا،

Lā nuṭīʿu lahu idhā istahwānā,

Let us never obey him when he lures us,

وَلَا نَسْتَجِيبُ لَهُ إِذَا دَعَانَا.

Walā nastajību lahu idhā daʿānā.

or answer him when he calls us.

نَأْمُرُ بِمُنَاوَاتِهِ مَنْ أَطَاعَ أَمْرَنَا،

Naʾmuru bimunāwātihi man aṭāʿa amranā,

Let us tell those who heed our commands to oppose him,

وَنَعِظُ عَنْ مُتَابَعَتِهِ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ زَجْرَنَا.

Wanaʿiẓu ʿan mutābaʿatihi mani ittabaʿa zajranā.

and warn those who heed our rebukes against following him.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ خَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّينَ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin khātami al-nabiyyīna

O God, bless Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets

وَسَيِّدِ الْمُرْسَلِينَ،

Wasayyidi al-mursalīna,

and foremost among the messengers,

وَعَلَى أَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ.

Waʿalā ahli baytihi al-ṭayyibīna al-ṭāhirīna.

and the good and pure people of his household.

وَأَعِذْنَا وَأَهَالِينَا وَإِخْوَانَنَا

Wa-aʿidhnā wa-ahālīnā wa-ikhwānanā

Protect us, our families, and our brothers and sisters,

وَجَمِيعَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Wajamīʿa al-muʾminīna wa-al-muʾmināti

together with all believing men and women,

مِمَّا اسْتَعَذْنَا مِنْهُ.

Mimmā istaʿadhnā minhu.

from all that we have sought refuge from.

وَأَجِرْنَا مِمَّا اسْتَجَرْنَا بِكَ مِنْ خَوْفِهِ،

Wa-ajirnā mimmā istajarnā bika min khawfihi,

Shelter us from everything whose fear drove us to seek shelter in You.

وَاسْمَعْ لَنَا مَا دَعَوْنَا بِهِ،

Wa-ismaʿ lanā mā daʿawnā bihi,

Hear the prayers we have offered,

وَأَعْطِنَا مَا أَغْفَلْنَاهُ،

Wa-aʿṭinā mā aghfalnāhu,

grant what we have overlooked,

وَاحْفَظْ لَنَا مَا نَسِينَاهُ.

Wa-iḥfaẓ lanā mā nasīnāhu.

and preserve for us what we have forgotten.

وَصَيِّرْنَا بِذَلِكَ فِي دَرَجَاتِ الصَّالِحِينَ

Waṣayyirnā bi-dhālika fī darajāti al-ṣāliḥīna

Through this, raise us to the degrees of the righteous

وَمَرَاتِبِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ.

Wamarātibi al-muʾminīna.

and the ranks of the believers.

آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Āmīna rabba al-ʿālamīna.

Amen, Lord of all worlds.

الدُّعَاءُ ١٨

Al-duʿāʾu 18

Prayer 18

إِذَا دُفِعَ عَنْهُ مَا يَحْذَرُ أَوْ عُجِّلَ لَهُ مَطْلَبُهُ

Idhā dufiʿa ʿanhu mā yaḥdharu aw ʿujjila lahu maṭlabuhu

When what he feared was averted or his request was quickly granted

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى حُسْنِ قَضَائِكَ،

Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu ʿalā ḥusni qaḍāʾika,

O God, praise belongs to You for the goodness of Your decree

وَبِمَا صَرَفْتَ عَنِّي مِنْ بَلَائِكَ.

Wabimā ṣarafta ʿannī min balāʾika.

and for the trial You have turned away from me.

فَلَا تَجْعَلْ حَظِّي مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ

Falā tajʿal ḥaẓẓī min raḥmatika

Do not let my share of Your mercy consist only

مَا عَجَّلْتَ لِي مِنْ عَافِيَتِكَ،

Mā ʿajjalta lī min ʿāfiyatika,

of the wellbeing You have hastened to give me,

فَأَكُونَ قَدْ شَقِيتُ بِمَا أَحْبَبْتُ،

Fa-akūna qad shaqītu bimā aḥbabtu,

so that what I loved should end in misery for me,

وَسَعِدَ غَيْرِي بِمَا كَرِهْتُ.

Wasaʿida ghayrī bimā karihtu.

while another finds happiness through what I disliked.

وَإِنْ يَكُنْ مَا ظَلِلْتُ فِيهِ أَوْ بِتُّ فِيهِ

Wa-in yakun mā ẓaliltu fīhi aw bittu fīhi

If the condition in which I spend my day or my night,

مِنْ هَذِهِ الْعَافِيَةِ

Min hādhihi al-ʿāfiyati

this present wellbeing,

بَيْنَ يَدَيْ بَلَاءٍ لَا يَنْقَطِعُ

Bayna yaday balāʾin lā yanqaṭiʿu

is only a prelude to affliction that never ends

وَوِزْرٍ لَا يَرْتَفِعُ،

Wawizrin lā yartafiʿu,

and a burden of guilt that is never lifted,

فَقَدِّمْ لِي مَا أَخَّرْتَ،

Faqaddim lī mā akhkharta,

then bring forward for me what You have delayed,

وَأَخِّرْ عَنِّي مَا قَدَّمْتَ.

Wa-akhkhir ʿannī mā qaddamta.

and delay what You have brought forward.

فَغَيْرُ كَثِيرٍ مَا عَاقِبَتُهُ الْفَنَاءُ،

Faghayru kathīrin mā ʿāqibatuhu al-fanāʾu,

What ends in passing away is never truly much,

وَغَيْرُ قَلِيلٍ مَا عَاقِبَتُهُ الْبَقَاءُ.

Waghayru qalīlin mā ʿāqibatuhu al-baqāʾu.

and what ends in permanence is never truly little.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ.

Waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi.

Bless Muhammad and his family.

الدُّعَاءُ ١٩

Al-duʿāʾu 19

Prayer 19

فِي الِاسْتِسْقَاءِ بَعْدَ الْجَدْبِ

Fī al-istisqāʾi baʿda al-jadbi

Asking for rain after drought

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا الْغَيْثَ،

Allāhumma isqinā al-ghaytha,

O God, water us with rain.

وَانْشُرْ عَلَيْنَا رَحْمَتَكَ بِغَيْثِكَ الْمُغْدِقِ،

Wa-unshur ʿalaynā raḥmataka bighaythika al-mughdiqi,

Spread Your mercy over us through Your abundant rainfall,

مِنَ السَّحَابِ الْمُنْسَاقِ،

Mina al-saḥābi al-munsāqi,

from the clouds driven onwards,

لِنَبَاتِ أَرْضِكَ الْمُونِقِ فِي جَمِيعِ الْآفَاقِ.

Linabāti arḍika al-mūniqi fī jamīʿi al-āfāqi.

for the lovely growth of Your earth across every horizon.

وَامْنُنْ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ بِإِينَاعِ الثَّمَرَةِ،

Wa-umnun ʿalā ʿibādika biʾīnāʿi al-thamarati,

Favour Your servants with ripening fruit,

وَأَحْيِ بِلَادَكَ بِبُلُوغِ الزَّهَرَةِ.

Wa-aḥyi bilādaka bibulūghi al-zaharati.

and bring Your lands to life as their blossoms reach fullness.

وَأَشْهِدْ مَلَائِكَتَكَ الْكِرَامَ السَّفَرَةَ

Wa-ashhid malāʾikataka al-kirāma al-safarata

Let Your noble angelic messengers witness

بِسَقْيٍ مِنْكَ نَافِعٍ،

Bisaqyin minka nāfiʿin,

beneficial rainfall from You,

دَائِمٍ غُزْرُهُ، وَاسِعٍ دِرَرُهُ،

Dāʾimin ghuzruhu, wāsiʿin diraruhu,

its abundance enduring, its flow spreading far,

وَابِلٍ سَرِيعٍ عَاجِلٍ،

Wābilin sarīʿin ʿājilin,

pouring down swiftly and without delay.

تُحْيِي بِهِ مَا قَدْ مَاتَ،

Tuḥyī bihi mā qad māta,

Through it, bring what has died back to life,

وَتَرُدُّ بِهِ مَا قَدْ فَاتَ،

Wataruddu bihi mā qad fāta,

restore what has been lost,

وَتُخْرِجُ بِهِ مَا هُوَ آتٍ،

Watukhriju bihi mā huwa ātin,

and bring forth the growth yet to come,

وَتُوَسِّعُ بِهِ فِي الْأَقْوَاتِ،

Watuwassiʿu bihi fī al-aqwāti,

increasing the supply of food through it.

سَحَابًا مُتَرَاكِمًا هَنِيئًا مَرِيئًا،

Saḥāban mutarākiman hanīʾan marīʾan,

Send clouds piled high, their rain welcome and wholesome,

طَبَقًا مُجَلْجَلًا،

Ṭabaqan mujaljalan,

spreading across the sky and rumbling with thunder,

غَيْرَ مُلِثٍّ وَدْقُهُ،

Ghayra muliththin wadquhu,

whose rainfall does not linger without ceasing,

وَلَا خُلَّبٍ بَرْقُهُ.

Walā khullabin barquhu.

and whose lightning does not promise rain in vain.

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا،

Allāhumma isqinā ghaythan mughīthan,

O God, water us with rain that brings relief,

مَرِيعًا مُمْرِعًا،

Marīʿan mumriʿan,

rich in abundance and making the pastures flourish,

عَرِيضًا وَاسِعًا غَزِيرًا،

ʿarīḍan wāsiʿan ghazīran,

far-reaching, widespread, and plentiful.

تَرُدُّ بِهِ النَّهِيضَ

Taruddu bihi al-nahīḍa

Through it restore what has been laid low

وَتَجْبُرُ بِهِ الْمَهِيضَ.

Watajburu bihi al-mahīḍa.

and mend what has been broken.

اللَّهُمَّ اسْقِنَا سَقْيًا

Allāhumma isqinā saqyan

O God, water us with rain

تُسِيلُ مِنْهُ الظِّرَابَ،

Tusīlu minhu al-ẓirāba,

that sends streams flowing from the hills,

وَتَمْلَأُ مِنْهُ الْجِبَابَ،

Watamlaʾu minhu al-jibāba,

fills the cisterns,

وَتُفَجِّرُ بِهِ الْأَنْهَارَ،

Watufajjiru bihi al-anhāra,

makes rivers burst forth,

وَتُنْبِتُ بِهِ الْأَشْجَارَ،

Watunbitu bihi al-ashjāra,

and causes trees to grow.

وَتُرْخِصُ بِهِ الْأَسْعَارَ فِي جَمِيعِ الْأَمْصَارِ،

Waturkhiṣu bihi al-asʿāra fī jamīʿi al-amṣāri,

Through it, bring down prices in every town,

وَتَنْعَشُ بِهِ الْبَهَائِمَ وَالْخَلْقَ،

Watanʿashu bihi al-bahāʾima wa-al-khalqa,

revive animals and all creatures,

وَتُكْمِلُ لَنَا بِهِ طَيِّبَاتِ الرِّزْقِ،

Watukmilu lanā bihi ṭayyibāti al-rizqi,

and complete for us the good things You provide.

وَتُنْبِتُ لَنَا بِهِ الزَّرْعَ،

Watunbitu lanā bihi al-zarʿa,

Let our crops grow through it,

وَتُدِرُّ بِهِ الضَّرْعَ،

Watudirru bihi al-ḍarʿa,

make milk flow from the udders,

وَتَزِيدُنَا بِهِ قُوَّةً إِلَى قُوَّتِنَا.

Watazīdunā bihi quwwatan ilā quwwatinā.

and add through it strength to our strength.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْ ظِلَّهُ عَلَيْنَا سَمُومًا،

Allāhumma lā tajʿal ẓillahu ʿalaynā samūman,

O God, do not let its shade bring us a scorching wind,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ بَرْدَهُ عَلَيْنَا حُسُومًا،

Walā tajʿal bardahu ʿalaynā ḥusūman,

or its cold bring destruction upon us.

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ صَوْبَهُ عَلَيْنَا رُجُومًا،

Walā tajʿal ṣawbahu ʿalaynā rujūman,

Do not let its downpour strike us like stones,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ مَاءَهُ عَلَيْنَا أُجَاجًا.

Walā tajʿal māʾahu ʿalaynā ujājan.

or its water turn bitter and salt for us.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin,

O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَارْزُقْنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ،

Wa-urzuqnā min barakāti al-samāwāti wa-al-arḍi,

Provide for us from the blessings of the heavens and the earth.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.

You have power over all things.

الدُّعَاءُ ٢٠

Al-duʿāʾu 20

Prayer 20

فِي مَكَارِمِ الْأَخْلَاقِ وَمَرْضِيِّ الْأَفْعَالِ

Fī makārimi al-akhlāqi wamarḍiyyi al-afʿāli

For noble character and conduct pleasing to God

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَبَلِّغْ بِإِيمَانِي أَكْمَلَ الْإِيمَانِ،

Waballigh biʾīmānī akmala al-īmāni,

Bring my faith to its fullest perfection,

وَاجْعَلْ يَقِينِي أَفْضَلَ الْيَقِينِ،

Wa-ijʿal yaqīnī afḍala al-yaqīni,

and make my certainty the finest certainty.

وَانْتَهِ بِنِيَّتِي إِلَى أَحْسَنِ النِّيَّاتِ،

Wa-intahi biniyyatī ilā aḥsani al-niyyāti,

Bring my intention to the best of intentions,

وَبِعَمَلِي إِلَى أَحْسَنِ الْأَعْمَالِ.

Wabiʿamalī ilā aḥsani al-aʿmāli.

and my deeds to the best of deeds.

اللَّهُمَّ وَفِّرْ بِلُطْفِكَ نِيَّتِي،

Allāhumma waffir biluṭfika niyyatī,

O God, perfect my intention through Your gentle care,

وَصَحِّحْ بِمَا عِنْدَكَ يَقِينِي،

Waṣaḥḥiḥ bimā ʿindaka yaqīnī,

set my certainty right through what is with You,

وَاسْتَصْلِحْ بِقُدْرَتِكَ مَا فَسَدَ مِنِّي.

Wa-istaṣliḥ biqudratika mā fasada minnī.

and repair through Your power what has gone wrong in me.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاكْفِنِي مَا يَشْغَلُنِي الِاهْتِمَامُ بِهِ،

Wa-ikfinī mā yashghalunī al-ihtimāmu bihi,

Relieve me of concerns that preoccupy me.

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِمَا تَسْأَلُنِي غَدًا عَنْهُ،

Wa-istaʿmilnī bimā tasʾalunī ghadan ʿanhu,

Engage me in what You will ask me about tomorrow,

وَاسْتَفْرِغْ أَيَّامِي فِيمَا خَلَقْتَنِي لَهُ.

Wa-istafrigh ayyāmī fīmā khalaqtanī lahu.

and devote all my days to what You created me for.

وَاغْنِنِي وَأَوْسِعْ عَلَيَّ فِي رِزْقِكَ،

Wa-ighninī wa-awsiʿ ʿalayya fī rizqika,

Make me free of need, and provide for me generously.

وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي بِالنَّظَرِ،

Walā taftinnī bi-al-naẓari,

Do not tempt me to look longingly at what others have.

وَأَعِزَّنِي وَلَا تَبْتَلِيَنِّي بِالْكِبْرِ،

Wa-aʿizzanī walā tabtaliyannī bi-al-kibri,

Honour me, and do not afflict me with arrogance.

وَعَبِّدْنِي لَكَ،

Waʿabbidnī laka,

Make me wholly devoted to Your service,

وَلَا تُفْسِدْ عِبَادَتِي بِالْعُجْبِ.

Walā tufsid ʿibādatī bi-al-ʿujbi.

and do not let self-admiration corrupt my worship.

وَأَجْرِ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَى يَدَيَّ الْخَيْرَ،

Wa-ajri li-l-nāsi ʿalā yadayya al-khayra,

Let good reach people through my hands,

وَلَا تَمْحَقْهُ بِالْمَنِّ.

Walā tamḥaqhu bi-al-manni.

and do not let reminders of my favours wipe it away.

وَهَبْ لِي مَعَالِيَ الْأَخْلَاقِ،

Wahab lī maʿāliya al-akhlāqi,

Grant me the loftiest qualities of character,

وَاعْصِمْنِي مِنَ الْفَخْرِ.

Wa-iʿṣimnī mina al-fakhri.

and protect me from boasting.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَلَا تَرْفَعْنِي فِي النَّاسِ دَرَجَةً

Walā tarfaʿnī fī al-nāsi darajatan

Do not raise me a degree in people's eyes

إِلَّا حَطَطْتَنِي عِنْدَ نَفْسِي مِثْلَهَا،

Illā ḥaṭaṭtanī ʿinda nafsī mithlahā,

without lowering me by the same degree in my own.

وَلَا تُحْدِثْ لِي عِزًّا ظَاهِرًا

Walā tuḥdith lī ʿizzan ẓāhiran

Do not grant me outward honour

إِلَّا أَحْدَثْتَ لِي ذِلَّةً بَاطِنَةً

Illā aḥdathta lī dhillatan bāṭinatan

without granting me an inward humility

عِنْدَ نَفْسِي بِقَدَرِهَا.

ʿinda nafsī biqadarihā.

equal to it in my own estimation.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin,

O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَمَتِّعْنِي بِهُدًى صَالِحٍ لَا أَسْتَبْدِلُ بِهِ،

Wamattiʿnī bihudan ṣāliḥin lā astabdilu bihi,

Grant me sound guidance that I never exchange for another,

وَطَرِيقَةِ حَقٍّ لَا أَزِيغُ عَنْهَا،

Waṭarīqati ḥaqqin lā azīghu ʿanhā,

a path of truth from which I never stray,

وَنِيَّةِ رَشْدٍ لَا أَشُكُّ فِيهَا.

Waniyyati rashdin lā ashukku fīhā.

and an upright intention about which I have no doubt.

وَعَمِّرْنِي مَا كَانَ عُمْرِي بِذْلَةً فِي طَاعَتِكَ.

Waʿammirnī mā kāna ʿumrī bidhlatan fī ṭāʿatika.

Let me live as long as my life is spent in obeying You.

فَإِذَا كَانَ عُمْرِي مَرْتَعًا لِلشَّيْطَانِ،

Fa-idhā kāna ʿumrī martaʿan li-l-shayṭāni,

But when my life becomes a pasture for Satan,

فَاقْبِضْنِي إِلَيْكَ،

Fa-iqbiḍnī ilayka,

take me to Yourself,

قَبْلَ أَنْ يَسْبِقَ مَقْتُكَ إِلَيَّ،

Qabla an yasbiqa maqtuka ilayya,

before Your displeasure overtakes me

أَوْ يَسْتَحْكِمَ غَضَبُكَ عَلَيَّ.

Aw yastaḥkima ghaḍabuka ʿalayya.

or Your anger settles firmly upon me.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَدَعْ خِصْلَةً تُعَابُ مِنِّي

Allāhumma lā tadaʿ khiṣlatan tuʿābu minnī

O God, leave no blameworthy trait in me

إِلَّا أَصْلَحْتَهَا،

Illā aṣlaḥtahā,

without setting it right,

وَلَا عَائِبَةً أُؤَنَّبُ بِهَا إِلَّا حَسَّنْتَهَا،

Walā ʿāʾibatan uʾannabu bihā illā ḥassantahā,

no fault for which I am reproached without making it good,

وَلَا أُكْرُومَةً فِيَّ نَاقِصَةً إِلَّا أَتْمَمْتَهَا.

Walā ukrūmatan fiyya nāqiṣatan illā atmamtahā.

and no noble quality in me incomplete without perfecting it.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin,

O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَأَبْدِلْنِي مِنْ بُغْضَةِ أَهْلِ الشَّنَآنِ الْمَحَبَّةَ،

Wa-abdilnī min bughḍati ahli al-shanaʾāni al-maḥabbata,

Replace the hatred of those who hate me with love,

وَمِنْ حَسَدِ أَهْلِ الْبَغْيِ الْمَوَدَّةَ،

Wamin ḥasadi ahli al-baghyi al-mawaddata,

the envy of aggressors with affection,

وَمِنْ ظِنَّةِ أَهْلِ الصَّلَاحِ الثِّقَةَ،

Wamin ẓinnati ahli al-ṣalāḥi al-thiqata,

the suspicion of the righteous with trust,

وَمِنْ عَدَاوَةِ الْأَدْنَيْنَ الْوَلَايَةَ،

Wamin ʿadāwati al-adnayna al-walāyata,

the hostility of those close to me with friendship,

وَمِنْ عُقُوقِ ذَوِي الْأَرْحَامِ الْمَبَرَّةَ،

Wamin ʿuqūqi dhawī al-arḥāmi al-mabarrata,

the estrangement of relatives with kindness,

وَمِنْ خِذْلَانِ الْأَقْرَبِينَ النُّصْرَةَ،

Wamin khidhlāni al-aqrabīna al-nuṣrata,

and the abandonment of my kin with support.

وَمِنْ حُبِّ الْمُدَارِينَ تَصْحِيحَ الْمِقَةِ،

Wamin ḥubbi al-mudārīna taṣḥīḥa al-miqati,

Replace the affection of flatterers with sincere love,

وَمِنْ رَدِّ الْمُلَابِسِينَ كَرَمَ الْعِشْرَةِ،

Wamin raddi al-mulābisīna karama al-ʿishrati,

the rejection of my companions with gracious companionship,

وَمِنْ مَرَارَةِ خَوْفِ الظَّالِمِينَ حَلَاوَةَ الْأَمَنَةِ.

Wamin marārati khawfi al-ẓālimīna ḥalāwata al-amanati.

and bitter fear of oppressors with the sweetness of safety.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْ لِي يَدًا عَلَى مَنْ ظَلَمَنِي،

Wa-ijʿal lī yadan ʿalā man ẓalamanī,

Give me the upper hand over anyone who wrongs me,

وَلِسَانًا عَلَى مَنْ خَاصَمَنِي،

Walisānan ʿalā man khāṣamanī,

an answer to anyone who disputes with me,

وَظَفَرًا بِمَنْ عَانَدَنِي.

Waẓafaran biman ʿānadanī.

and victory over anyone who stubbornly opposes me.

وَهَبْ لِي مَكْرًا عَلَى مَنْ كَايَدَنِي،

Wahab lī makran ʿalā man kāyadanī,

Grant me a strategy against anyone who plots against me,

وَقُدْرَةً عَلَى مَنِ اضْطَهَدَنِي،

Waqudratan ʿalā mani iḍṭahadanī,

power over anyone who oppresses me,

وَتَكْذِيبًا لِمَنْ قَصَبَنِي،

Watakdhīban liman qaṣabanī,

a refutation of anyone who slanders me,

وَسَلَامَةً مِمَّنْ تَوَعَّدَنِي.

Wasalāmatan mimman tawaʿʿadanī.

and safety from anyone who threatens me.

وَوَفِّقْنِي لِطَاعَةِ مَنْ سَدَّدَنِي،

Wawaffiqnī liṭāʿati man saddadanī,

Enable me to obey those who set me right

وَمُتَابَعَةِ مَنْ أَرْشَدَنِي.

Wamutābaʿati man arshadanī.

and follow those who guide me.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَسَدِّدْنِي لِأَنْ أُعَارِضَ مَنْ غَشَّنِي بِالنُّصْحِ،

Wasaddidnī liʾan uʿāriḍa man ghashshanī bi-al-nuṣḥi,

Guide me to meet deceit with sincere counsel,

وَأَجْزِيَ مَنْ هَجَرَنِي بِالْبِرِّ،

Wa-ajziya man hajaranī bi-al-birri,

repay those who shun me with kindness,

وَأُثِيبَ مَنْ حَرَمَنِي بِالْبَذْلِ،

Wa-uthība man ḥaramanī bi-al-badhli,

reward those who deprive me by giving to them,

وَأُكَافِئَ مَنْ قَطَعَنِي بِالصِّلَةِ،

Wa-ukāfiʾa man qaṭaʿanī bi-al-ṣilati,

and respond to those who cut me off by restoring our ties.

وَأُخَالِفَ مَنِ اغْتَابَنِي إِلَى حُسْنِ الذِّكْرِ،

Wa-ukhālifa mani ightābanī ilā ḥusni al-dhikri,

Let me answer those who speak ill of me with kind words,

وَأَنْ أَشْكُرَ الْحَسَنَةَ،

Wa-an ashkura al-ḥasanata,

be grateful for a good deed,

وَأُغْضِيَ عَنِ السَّيِّئَةِ.

Wa-ughḍiya ʿani al-sayyiʾati.

and overlook a bad one.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَحَلِّنِي بِحِلْيَةِ الصَّالِحِينَ،

Waḥallinī biḥilyati al-ṣāliḥīna,

Adorn me with the adornment of the righteous,

وَأَلْبِسْنِي زِينَةَ الْمُتَّقِينَ،

Wa-albisnī zīnata al-muttaqīna,

and clothe me in the beauty of the God-conscious:

فِي بَسْطِ الْعَدْلِ وَكَظْمِ الْغَيْظِ،

Fī basṭi al-ʿadli wakaẓmi al-ghayẓi,

spreading justice and restraining anger,

وَإِطْفَاءِ النَّائِرَةِ،

Wa-iṭfāʾi al-nāʾirati,

extinguishing the flames of hostility,

وَضَمِّ أَهْلِ الْفُرْقَةِ،

Waḍammi ahli al-furqati,

bringing together those who are divided,

وَإِصْلَاحِ ذَاتِ الْبَيْنِ،

Wa-iṣlāḥi dhāti al-bayni,

reconciling people with one another,

وَإِفْشَاءِ الْعَارِفَةِ وَسَتْرِ الْعَائِبَةِ،

Wa-ifshāʾi al-ʿārifati wasatri al-ʿāʾibati,

spreading goodness and concealing faults,

وَلِينِ الْعَرِيكَةِ وَخَفْضِ الْجَنَاحِ،

Walīni al-ʿarīkati wakhafḍi al-janāḥi,

being gentle in character and humble towards others,

وَحُسْنِ السِّيرَةِ وَسُكُونِ الرِّيحِ،

Waḥusni al-sīrati wasukūni al-rīḥi,

living well and keeping a calm disposition,

وَطِيبِ الْمُخَالَقَةِ،

Waṭībi al-mukhālaqati,

treating people with good nature,

وَالسَّبْقِ إِلَى الْفَضِيلَةِ،

Wa-al-sabqi ilā al-faḍīlati,

being first to pursue virtue,

وَإِيثَارِ التَّفَضُّلِ وَتَرْكِ التَّعْيِيرِ،

Wa-īthāri al-tafaḍḍuli watarki al-taʿyīri,

choosing generosity and refraining from taunts,

وَالْإِفْضَالِ عَلَى غَيْرِ الْمُسْتَحِقِّ،

Wa-al-ifḍāli ʿalā ghayri al-mustaḥiqqi,

showing kindness even to those who do not deserve it,

وَالْقَوْلِ بِالْحَقِّ وَإِنْ عَزَّ،

Wa-al-qawli bi-al-ḥaqqi wa-in ʿazza,

and speaking the truth, however hard it may be.

وَاسْتِقْلَالِ الْخَيْرِ وَإِنْ كَثُرَ مِنْ قَوْلِي وَفِعْلِي،

Wa-istiqlāli al-khayri wa-in kathura min qawlī wafiʿlī,

Let me regard my good words and deeds as little, however many,

وَاسْتِكْثَارِ الشَّرِّ وَإِنْ قَلَّ مِنْ قَوْلِي وَفِعْلِي.

Wa-istikthāri al-sharri wa-in qalla min qawlī wafiʿlī.

and my bad words and deeds as many, however few.

وَأَكْمِلْ ذَلِكَ لِي بِدَوَامِ الطَّاعَةِ،

Wa-akmil dhālika lī bidawāmi al-ṭāʿati,

Perfect all this in me through constant obedience,

وَلُزُومِ الْجَمَاعَةِ،

Waluzūmi al-jamāʿati,

holding fast to the community,

وَرَفْضِ أَهْلِ الْبِدَعِ،

Warafḍi ahli al-bidaʿi,

and rejecting those who introduce religious innovations

وَمُسْتَعْمِلِي الرَّأْيِ الْمُخْتَرَعِ.

Wamustaʿmilī al-raʾyi al-mukhtaraʿi.

and those who act on invented opinions.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْ أَوْسَعَ رِزْقِكَ عَلَيَّ إِذَا كَبِرْتُ،

Wa-ijʿal awsaʿa rizqika ʿalayya idhā kabirtu,

Let Your provision for me be most abundant when I grow old,

وَأَقْوَى قُوَّتِكَ فِيَّ إِذَا نَصِبْتُ.

Wa-aqwā quwwatika fiyya idhā naṣibtu.

and Your strength in me greatest when I grow weary.

وَلَا تَبْتَلِيَنِي بِالْكَسَلِ عَنْ عِبَادَتِكَ،

Walā tabtaliyanī bi-al-kasali ʿan ʿibādatika,

Do not afflict me with laziness in worshipping You,

وَلَا الْعَمَى عَنْ سَبِيلِكَ،

Walā al-ʿamā ʿan sabīlika,

blindness to Your path,

وَلَا بِالتَّعَرُّضِ لِخِلَافِ مَحَبَّتِكَ،

Walā bi-al-taʿarruḍi likhilāfi maḥabbatika,

or exposure to what is contrary to Your love.

وَلَا مُجَامَعَةِ مَنْ تَفَرَّقَ عَنْكَ،

Walā mujāmaʿati man tafarraqa ʿanka,

Do not let me associate with those who turn away from You,

وَلَا مُفَارَقَةِ مَنِ اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْكَ.

Walā mufāraqati mani ijtamaʿa ilayka.

or part from those who gather around You.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي أَصُولُ بِكَ عِنْدَ الضَّرُورَةِ،

Allāhumma ijʿalnī aṣūlu bika ʿinda al-ḍarūrati,

O God, let me draw strength from You in dire need,

وَأَسْأَلُكَ عِنْدَ الْحَاجَةِ،

Wa-asʾaluka ʿinda al-ḥājati,

ask of You when I am in want,

وَأَتَضَرَّعُ إِلَيْكَ عِنْدَ الْمَسْكَنَةِ.

Wa-ataḍarraʿu ilayka ʿinda al-maskanati.

and plead with You when I am destitute.

وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي بِالِاسْتِعَانَةِ بِغَيْرِكَ إِذَا اضْطُرِرْتُ،

Walā taftinnī bi-al-istiʿānati bighayrika idhā uḍṭurirtu,

Do not tempt me to seek help from others in dire need,

وَلَا بِالْخُضُوعِ لِسُؤَالِ غَيْرِكَ إِذَا افْتَقَرْتُ،

Walā bi-al-khuḍūʿi lisuʾāli ghayrika idhā iftaqartu,

to humble myself by begging others when I am poor,

وَلَا بِالتَّضَرُّعِ إِلَى مَنْ دُونِكَ إِذَا رَهِبْتُ،

Walā bi-al-taḍarruʿi ilā man dūnika idhā rahibtu,

or to plead with anyone besides You when I am afraid,

فَأَسْتَحِقَّ بِذَلِكَ خِذْلَانَكَ وَمَنْعَكَ وَإِعْرَاضَكَ،

Fa-astaḥiqqa bi-dhālika khidhlānaka wamanʿaka wa-iʿrāḍaka,

thus deserving to be forsaken, denied, and turned away by You,

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ مَا يُلْقِي الشَّيْطَانُ فِي رُوعِي

Allāhumma ijʿal mā yulqī al-shayṭānu fī rūʿī

O God, turn what Satan casts into my heart

مِنَ التَّمَنِّي وَالتَّظَنِّي وَالْحَسَدِ

Mina al-tamannī wa-al-taẓannī wa-al-ḥasadi

of wishful thinking, suspicion, and envy

ذِكْرًا لِعَظَمَتِكَ،

Dhikran liʿaẓamatika,

into remembrance of Your greatness,

وَتَفَكُّرًا فِي قُدْرَتِكَ،

Watafakkuran fī qudratika,

reflection on Your power,

وَتَدْبِيرًا عَلَى عَدُوِّكَ.

Watadbīran ʿalā ʿaduwwika.

and planning against Your enemy.

وَمَا أَجْرَى عَلَى لِسَانِي مِنْ لَفْظَةِ فُحْشٍ أَوْ هُجْرٍ،

Wamā ajrā ʿalā lisānī min lafẓati fuḥshin aw hujrin,

Turn the obscenity or foul speech he brings to my tongue,

أَوْ شَتْمِ عِرْضٍ أَوْ شَهَادَةِ بَاطِلٍ،

Aw shatmi ʿirḍin aw shahādati bāṭilin,

the attack on someone's honour or the false testimony,

أَوِ اغْتِيَابِ مُؤْمِنٍ غَائِبٍ،

Awi ightiyābi muʾminin ghāʾibin,

the backbiting of a believer who is absent,

أَوْ سَبِّ حَاضِرٍ أَوْ مَا أَشْبَهَ ذَلِكَ،

Aw sabbi ḥāḍirin aw mā ashbaha dhālika,

the abuse of someone present, or anything like it,

نُطْقًا بِالْحَمْدِ لَكَ،

Nuṭqan bi-al-ḥamdi laka,

into words of praise for You,

وَإِغْرَاقًا فِي الثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْكَ،

Wa-ighrāqan fī al-thanāʾi ʿalayka,

unstinting celebration of You,

وَذَهَابًا فِي تَمْجِيدِكَ،

Wadhahāban fī tamjīdika,

wholehearted glorification of You,

وَشُكْرًا لِنِعْمَتِكَ،

Washukran liniʿmatika,

gratitude for Your blessing,

وَاعْتِرَافًا بِإِحْسَانِكَ،

Wa-iʿtirāfan biʾiḥsānika,

acknowledgment of Your goodness,

وَإِحْصَاءً لِمِنَنِكَ.

Wa-iḥṣāʾan liminanika.

and a recounting of Your favours.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَلَا أُظْلَمَنَّ وَأَنْتَ مُطِيقٌ لِلدَّفْعِ عَنِّي،

Walā uẓlamanna wa-anta muṭīqun li-l-dafʿi ʿannī,

Let me not be wronged when You have the power to defend me,

وَلَا أَظْلِمَنَّ وَأَنْتَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى الْقَبْضِ مِنِّي.

Walā aẓlimanna wa-anta al-qādiru ʿalā al-qabḍi minnī.

nor wrong anyone when You have the power to restrain me.

وَلَا أَضِلَّنَّ وَقَدْ أَمْكَنَتْكَ هِدَايَتِي،

Walā aḍillanna waqad amkanatka hidāyatī,

Let me not go astray when You are able to guide me,

وَلَا أَفْتَقِرَنَّ وَمِنْ عِنْدِكَ وُسْعِي،

Walā aftaqiranna wamin ʿindika wusʿī,

nor become poor when my abundance comes from You,

وَلَا أَطْغَيَنَّ وَمِنْ عِنْدِكَ وُجْدِي.

Walā aṭghayanna wamin ʿindika wujdī.

nor transgress when my wealth comes from You.

اللَّهُمَّ إِلَى مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَفَدْتُ،

Allāhumma ilā maghfiratika wafadtu,

O God, I have come seeking Your forgiveness,

وَإِلَى عَفْوِكَ قَصَدْتُ،

Wa-ilā ʿafwika qaṣadtu,

set out in pursuit of Your pardon,

وَإِلَى تَجَاوُزِكَ اشْتَقْتُ،

Wa-ilā tajāwuzika ishtaqtu,

and longed for You to overlook my faults.

وَبِفَضْلِكَ وَثِقْتُ.

Wabifaḍlika wathiqtu.

I have placed my trust in Your grace.

وَلَيْسَ عِنْدِي مَا يُوجِبُ لِي مَغْفِرَتَكَ،

Walaysa ʿindī mā yūjibu lī maghfirataka,

I possess nothing that gives me a claim to Your forgiveness,

وَلَا فِي عَمَلِي مَا أَسْتَحِقُّ بِهِ عَفْوَكَ.

Walā fī ʿamalī mā astaḥiqqu bihi ʿafwaka.

and nothing in my deeds makes me deserve Your pardon.

وَمَا لِي بَعْدَ أَنْ حَكَمْتُ عَلَى نَفْسِي إِلَّا فَضْلُكَ.

Wamā lī baʿda an ḥakamtu ʿalā nafsī illā faḍluka.

Having judged myself, I have nothing left but Your grace.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَتَفَضَّلْ عَلَيَّ.

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi watafaḍḍal ʿalayya.

So bless Muhammad and his family, and be gracious to me.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَنْطِقْنِي بِالْهُدَى،

Allāhumma wa-anṭiqnī bi-al-hudā,

O God, let me speak words of guidance,

وَأَلْهِمْنِي التَّقْوَى،

Wa-alhimnī al-taqwā,

inspire me with reverence for You,

وَوَفِّقْنِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَزْكَى،

Wawaffiqnī lillatī hiya azkā,

guide me to what is purest,

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِمَا هُوَ أَرْضَى.

Wa-istaʿmilnī bimā huwa arḍā.

and engage me in what is most pleasing to You.

اللَّهُمَّ اسْلُكْ بِيَ الطَّرِيقَةَ الْمُثْلَى،

Allāhumma usluk biya al-ṭarīqata al-muthlā,

O God, lead me along the finest path,

وَاجْعَلْنِي عَلَى مِلَّتِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا.

Wa-ijʿalnī ʿalā millatika amūtu wa-aḥyā.

and let me die and live in Your religion.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَمَتِّعْنِي بِالِاقْتِصَادِ،

Wamattiʿnī bi-al-iqtiṣādi,

Grant me the benefit of moderation,

وَاجْعَلْنِي مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّدَادِ،

Wa-ijʿalnī min ahli al-sadādi,

and make me one of those whose course is sound,

وَمِنْ أَدِلَّةِ الرَّشَادِ،

Wamin adillati al-rashādi,

one of those who show the way to right guidance,

وَمِنْ صَالِحِي الْعِبَادِ.

Wamin ṣāliḥī al-ʿibādi.

and one of Your righteous servants.

وَارْزُقْنِي فَوْزَ الْمَعَادِ،

Wa-urzuqnī fawza al-maʿādi,

Grant me success on the day of return to You

وَسَلَامَةَ الْمِرْصَادِ.

Wasalāmata al-mirṣādi.

and safe passage through the place of watch.

اللَّهُمَّ خُذْ لِنَفْسِكَ مِنْ نَفْسِي مَا يُخَلِّصُهَا،

Allāhumma khudh linafsika min nafsī mā yukhalliṣuhā,

O God, take for Yourself from my soul what will deliver it,

وَأَبْقِ لِنَفْسِي مِنْ نَفْسِي مَا يُصْلِحُهَا،

Wa-abqi linafsī min nafsī mā yuṣliḥuhā,

and leave to my soul what will set it right,

فَإِنَّ نَفْسِي هَالِكَةٌ أَوْ تَعْصِمَهَا.

Fa-inna nafsī hālikatun aw taʿṣimahā.

for my soul will perish unless You protect it.

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ عُدَّتِي إِنْ حَزِنْتُ،

Allāhumma anta ʿuddatī in ḥazintu,

O God, You are my support when I grieve,

وَأَنْتَ مُنْتَجَعِي إِنْ حُرِمْتُ،

Wa-anta muntajaʿī in ḥurimtu,

my place of refuge when I am deprived,

وَبِكَ اسْتِغَاثَتِي إِنْ كُرِثْتُ.

Wabika istighāthatī in kurithtu.

and the One whose help I seek when distress overwhelms me.

وَعِنْدَكَ مِمَّا فَاتَ خَلَفٌ،

Waʿindaka mimmā fāta khalafun,

With You is a replacement for what has been lost,

وَلِمَا فَسَدَ صَلَاحٌ،

Walimā fasada ṣalāḥun,

repair for what has been spoiled,

وَفِيمَا أَنْكَرْتَ تَغْيِيرٌ.

Wafīmā ankarta taghyīrun.

and a change in whatever You disapprove of.

فَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ قَبْلَ الْبَلَاءِ بِالْعَافِيَةِ،

Fa-umnun ʿalayya qabla al-balāʾi bi-al-ʿāfiyati,

Grant me wellbeing before affliction,

وَقَبْلَ الطَّلَبِ بِالْجِدَةِ،

Waqabla al-ṭalabi bi-al-jidati,

sufficiency before I need to ask,

وَقَبْلَ الضَّلَالِ بِالرَّشَادِ.

Waqabla al-ḍalāli bi-al-rashādi.

and guidance before I go astray.

وَاكْفِنِي مَؤُونَةَ مَعَرَّةِ الْعِبَادِ،

Wa-ikfinī maʾūnata maʿarrati al-ʿibādi,

Spare me the burden of the harm people cause.

وَهَبْ لِي أَمْنَ يَوْمِ الْمَعَادِ،

Wahab lī amna yawmi al-maʿādi,

Grant me safety on the day of return to You,

وَامْنَحْنِي حُسْنَ الْإِرْشَادِ.

Wa-imnaḥnī ḥusna al-irshādi.

and favour me with sound guidance.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَادْرَأْ عَنِّي بِلُطْفِكَ،

Wa-idraʾ ʿannī biluṭfika,

Ward off harm from me through Your gentle care,

وَاغْذُنِي بِنِعْمَتِكَ،

Wa-ughdhunī biniʿmatika,

nourish me through Your blessing,

وَأَصْلِحْنِي بِكَرَمِكَ،

Wa-aṣliḥnī bikaramika,

set me right through Your generosity,

وَدَاوِنِي بِصُنْعِكَ،

Wadāwinī biṣunʿika,

heal me through Your handiwork,

وَأَظِلَّنِي فِي ذَرَاكَ،

Wa-aẓillanī fī dharāka,

shelter me in Your protection,

وَجَلِّلْنِي رِضَاكَ.

Wajallilnī riḍāka.

and cover me with Your good pleasure.

وَوَفِّقْنِي إِذَا اشْتَكَلَتْ عَلَيَّ الْأُمُورُ لِأَهْدَاهَا،

Wawaffiqnī idhā ishtakalat ʿalayya al-umūru liʾahdāhā,

When matters confuse me, guide me to their soundest course;

وَإِذَا تَشَابَهَتِ الْأَعْمَالُ لِأَزْكَاهَا،

Wa-idhā tashābahati al-aʿmālu liʾazkāhā,

when deeds seem alike, to the purest among them;

وَإِذَا تَنَاقَضَتِ الْمِلَلُ لِأَرْضَاهَا.

Wa-idhā tanāqaḍati al-milalu liʾarḍāhā.

and when creeds conflict, to the one most pleasing to You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَتَوِّجْنِي بِالْكِفَايَةِ،

Watawwijnī bi-al-kifāyati,

Crown me with sufficiency,

وَسُمْنِي حُسْنَ الْوِلَايَةِ،

Wasumnī ḥusna al-wilāyati,

place me under Your gracious care,

وَهَبْ لِي صِدْقَ الْهِدَايَةِ.

Wahab lī ṣidqa al-hidāyati.

and grant me true guidance.

وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي بِالسَّعَةِ،

Walā taftinnī bi-al-saʿati,

Do not let abundance lead me into temptation.

وَامْنَحْنِي حُسْنَ الدَّعَةِ،

Wa-imnaḥnī ḥusna al-daʿati,

Grant me the blessing of ease,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ عَيْشِي كَدًّا كَدًّا،

Walā tajʿal ʿayshī kaddan kaddan,

and do not make my life an endless, exhausting toil.

وَلَا تَرُدَّ دُعَائِي عَلَيَّ رَدًّا،

Walā tarudda duʿāʾī ʿalayya raddan,

Do not send my prayer back rejected,

فَإِنِّي لَا أَجْعَلُ لَكَ ضِدًّا،

Fa-innī lā ajʿalu laka ḍiddan,

for I set no adversary against You,

وَلَا أَدْعُو مَعَكَ نِدًّا.

Walā adʿū maʿaka niddan.

nor call upon any equal alongside You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَامْنَعْنِي مِنَ السَّرَفِ،

Wa-imnaʿnī mina al-sarafi,

Keep me from extravagance,

وَحَصِّنْ رِزْقِي مِنَ التَّلَفِ،

Waḥaṣṣin rizqī mina al-talafi,

protect my livelihood from loss,

وَوَفِّرْ مَلَكَتِي بِالْبَرَكَةِ فِيهِ.

Wawaffir malakatī bi-al-barakati fīhi.

and increase what I possess by blessing it.

وَأَصِبْ بِي سَبِيلَ الْهِدَايَةِ لِلْبِرِّ

Wa-aṣib bī sabīla al-hidāyati li-l-birri

Set me on the path that leads to goodness

فِيمَا أُنْفِقُ مِنْهُ.

Fīmā unfiqu minhu.

in whatever I spend from it.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاكْفِنِي مَؤُونَةَ الِاكْتِسَابِ،

Wa-ikfinī maʾūnata al-iktisābi,

Spare me the burden of earning a living,

وَارْزُقْنِي مِنْ غَيْرِ احْتِسَابٍ،

Wa-urzuqnī min ghayri iḥtisābin,

and provide for me beyond all reckoning,

فَلَا أَشْتَغِلَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِكَ بِالطَّلَبِ،

Falā ashtaghila ʿan ʿibādatika bi-al-ṭalabi,

so that seeking it does not distract me from worshipping You,

وَلَا أَحْتَمِلَ إِصْرَ تَبِعَاتِ الْمَكْسَبِ.

Walā aḥtamila iṣra tabiʿāti al-maksabi.

nor leave me bearing the burden of what those earnings entail.

اللَّهُمَّ فَأَطْلِبْنِي بِقُدْرَتِكَ مَا أَطْلُبُ،

Allāhumma fa-aṭlibnī biqudratika mā aṭlubu,

O God, grant me through Your power what I seek,

وَأَجِرْنِي بِعِزَّتِكَ مِمَّا أَرْهَبُ.

Wa-ajirnī biʿizzatika mimmā arhabu.

and shelter me through Your might from what I fear.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَصُنْ وَجْهِي بِالْيَسَارِ،

Waṣun wajhī bi-al-yasāri,

Preserve my dignity through sufficiency,

وَلَا تَبْتَذِلْ جَاهِي بِالْإِقْتَارِ،

Walā tabtadhil jāhī bi-al-iqtāri,

and do not degrade my standing through poverty,

فَأَسْتَرْزِقَ أَهْلَ رِزْقِكَ،

Fa-astarziqa ahla rizqika,

leaving me to seek provision from those whom You provide for,

وَأَسْتَعْطِيَ شِرَارَ خَلْقِكَ،

Wa-astaʿṭiya shirāra khalqika,

and to beg the worst of Your creatures,

فَأَفْتَتِنَ بِحَمْدِ مَنْ أَعْطَانِي،

Fa-aftatina biḥamdi man aʿṭānī,

tempted into praising those who give to me,

وَأُبْتَلَى بِذَمِّ مَنْ مَنَعَنِي،

Wa-ubtalā bidhammi man manaʿanī,

and afflicted with blaming those who withhold from me,

وَأَنْتَ مِنْ دُونِهِمْ وَلِيُّ الْإِعْطَاءِ وَالْمَنْعِ.

Wa-anta min dūnihim waliyyu al-iʿṭāʾi wa-al-manʿi.

when You alone, beyond them, govern giving and withholding.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَارْزُقْنِي صِحَّةً فِي عِبَادَةٍ،

Wa-urzuqnī ṣiḥḥatan fī ʿibādatin,

Grant me health devoted to worship,

وَفَرَاغًا فِي زَهَادَةٍ،

Wafarāghan fī zahādatin,

leisure joined with detachment from worldly desires,

وَعِلْمًا فِي اسْتِعْمَالٍ،

Waʿilman fī istiʿmālin,

knowledge put into practice,

وَوَرَعًا فِي إِجْمَالٍ.

Wawaraʿan fī ijmālin.

and conscientious restraint exercised with balance.

اللَّهُمَّ اخْتِمْ بِعَفْوِكَ أَجَلِي،

Allāhumma ikhtim biʿafwika ajalī,

O God, seal the end of my life with Your pardon,

وَحَقِّقْ فِي رَجَاءِ رَحْمَتِكَ أَمَلِي،

Waḥaqqiq fī rajāʾi raḥmatika amalī,

fulfil my hope as I look to Your mercy,

وَسَهِّلْ إِلَى بُلُوغِ رِضَاكَ سُبُلِي،

Wasahhil ilā bulūghi riḍāka subulī,

ease my paths towards attaining Your good pleasure,

وَحَسِّنْ فِي جَمِيعِ أَحْوَالِي عَمَلِي.

Waḥassin fī jamīʿi aḥwālī ʿamalī.

and make my deeds good in every circumstance.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَنَبِّهْنِي لِذِكْرِكَ فِي أَوْقَاتِ الْغَفْلَةِ،

Wanabbihnī lidhikrika fī awqāti al-ghaflati,

Awaken me to Your remembrance in times of heedlessness,

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِطَاعَتِكَ فِي أَيَّامِ الْمُهْلَةِ،

Wa-istaʿmilnī biṭāʿatika fī ayyāmi al-muhlati,

and engage me in obeying You while I still have time.

وَانْهَجْ لِي إِلَى مَحَبَّتِكَ سَبِيلًا سَهْلَةً،

Wa-inhaj lī ilā maḥabbatika sabīlan sahlatan,

Open for me an easy path to Your love,

أَكْمِلْ لِي بِهَا خَيْرَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.

Akmil lī bihā khayra al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati.

and through it perfect for me the good of this life and the next.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family,

كَأَفْضَلِ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ قَبْلَهُ،

Kaʾafḍali mā ṣallayta ʿalā aḥadin min khalqika qablahu,

with the finest blessings You have bestowed on anyone before him

وَأَنْتَ مُصَلٍّ عَلَى أَحَدٍ بَعْدَهُ.

Wa-anta muṣallin ʿalā aḥadin baʿdahu.

or will bestow on anyone after him.

وَآتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً،

Wa-ātinā fī al-dunyā ḥasanatan,

Give us good in this world

وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً،

Wafī al-ākhirati ḥasanatan,

and good in the next,

وَقِنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Waqinī biraḥmatika ʿadhāba al-nāri.

and, through Your mercy, protect me from the Fire's punishment.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ،

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun,

You have power over all things,

وَهُوَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ.

Wahuwa ʿalayka yasīrun.

and this is easy for You.

الدُّعَاءُ ٢١

Al-duʿāʾu 21

Prayer 21

إِذَا حَزَنَهُ أَمْرٌ وَأَهَمَّتْهُ الْخَطَايَا

Idhā ḥazanahu amrun wa-ahammat-hu al-khaṭāyā

When something saddened him and sins weighed on him

اللَّهُمَّ يَا كَافِيَ الْفَرْدِ الضَّعِيفِ،

Allāhumma yā kāfiya al-fardi al-ḍaʿīfi,

O God, You who sustain the lonely and weak

وَوَاقِيَ الْأَمْرِ الْمَخُوفِ،

Wawāqiya al-amri al-makhūfi,

and protect against what is feared,

أَفْرَدَتْنِي الْخَطَايَا فَلَا صَاحِبَ مَعِي،

Afradatnī al-khaṭāyā falā ṣāḥiba maʿī,

sins have left me alone, with no companion beside me.

وَضَعُفْتُ عَنْ غَضَبِكَ فَلَا مُؤَيِّدَ لِي،

Waḍaʿuftu ʿan ghaḍabika falā muʾayyida lī,

I am too weak to face Your anger, with no one to support me.

وَأَشْرَفْتُ عَلَى خَوْفِ لِقَائِكَ،

Wa-ashraftu ʿalā khawfi liqāʾika,

The fearful prospect of meeting You draws near,

فَلَا مُسَكِّنَ لِرَوْعَتِي.

Falā musakkina lirawʿatī.

and no one can calm my terror.

وَمَنْ يُؤْمِنُنِي مِنْكَ وَأَنْتَ أَخَفْتَنِي؟

Waman yuʾminunī minka wa-anta akhaftanī?

Who can keep me safe from You when You have made me afraid?

وَمَنْ يُسَاعِدُنِي وَأَنْتَ أَفْرَدْتَنِي؟

Waman yusāʿidunī wa-anta afradtanī?

Who can help me when You have left me alone?

وَمَنْ يُقَوِّينِي وَأَنْتَ أَضْعَفْتَنِي؟

Waman yuqawwīnī wa-anta aḍʿaftanī?

Who can strengthen me when You have made me weak?

لَا يُجِيرُ يَا إِلَهِي إِلَّا رَبٌّ عَلَى مَرْبُوبٍ،

Lā yujīru yā ilāhī illā rabbun ʿalā marbūbin,

My God, only a master can protect against one under his rule,

وَلَا يُؤْمِنُ إِلَّا غَالِبٌ عَلَى مَغْلُوبٍ،

Walā yuʾminu illā ghālibun ʿalā maghlūbin,

only a conqueror can grant safety against one he has overcome,

وَلَا يُعِينُ إِلَّا طَالِبٌ عَلَى مَطْلُوبٍ.

Walā yuʿīnu illā ṭālibun ʿalā maṭlūbin.

and only a pursuer can give help against one he pursues.

وَبِيَدِكَ يَا إِلَهِي جَمِيعُ ذَلِكَ السَّبَبِ،

Wabiyadika yā ilāhī jamīʿu dhālika al-sababi,

All these means, my God, are in Your hand.

وَإِلَيْكَ الْمَفَرُّ وَالْمَهْرَبُ.

Wa-ilayka al-mafarru wa-al-mahrabu.

To You is the flight, and with You the refuge.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

So bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَجِرْ هَرَبِي وَأَنْجِحْ مَطْلَبِي.

Wa-ajir harabī wa-anjiḥ maṭlabī.

shelter me as I flee, and grant what I seek.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ إِنْ صَرَفْتَ عَنِّي وَجْهَكَ الْكَرِيمَ،

Allāhumma innaka in ṣarafta ʿannī wajhaka al-karīma,

O God, if You turn Your noble face away from me,

أَوْ مَنَعْتَنِي فَضْلَكَ الْجَسِيمَ،

Aw manaʿtanī faḍlaka al-jasīma,

withhold Your immense bounty from me,

أَوْ حَظَرْتَ عَلَيَّ رِزْقَكَ،

Aw ḥaẓarta ʿalayya rizqaka,

bar me from Your provision,

أَوْ قَطَعْتَ عَنِّي سَبَبَكَ،

Aw qaṭaʿta ʿannī sababaka,

or cut off the bond that joins me to You,

لَمْ أَجِدِ السَّبِيلَ إِلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ أَمَلِي غَيْرَكَ،

Lam ajidi al-sabīla ilā shayʾin min amalī ghayraka,

I will find no path to anything I hope for except through You,

وَلَمْ أَقْدِرْ عَلَى مَا عِنْدَكَ بِمَعُونَةِ سِوَاكَ.

Walam aqdir ʿalā mā ʿindaka bimaʿūnati siwāka.

nor attain what is with You through anyone else's help.

فَإِنِّي عَبْدُكَ وَفِي قَبْضَتِكَ،

Fa-innī ʿabduka wafī qabḍatika,

I am Your servant, held in Your grasp;

نَاصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ.

Nāṣiyatī biyadika.

my forelock is in Your hand.

لَا أَمْرَ لِي مَعَ أَمْرِكَ،

Lā amra lī maʿa amrika,

No command of mine can stand against Yours.

مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ.

Māḍin fiyya ḥukmuka, ʿadlun fiyya qaḍāʾuka.

Your judgment upon me takes effect; Your decree for me is just.

وَلَا قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَى الْخُرُوجِ مِنْ سُلْطَانِكَ،

Walā quwwata lī ʿalā al-khurūji min sulṭānika,

I have no strength to escape Your authority,

وَلَا أَسْتَطِيعُ مُجَاوَزَةَ قُدْرَتِكَ.

Walā astaṭīʿu mujāwazata qudratika.

and I cannot pass beyond Your power.

وَلَا أَسْتَمِيلُ هَوَاكَ،

Walā astamīlu hawāka,

I cannot win Your favour,

وَلَا أَبْلُغُ رِضَاكَ،

Walā ablughu riḍāka,

attain Your good pleasure,

وَلَا أَنَالُ مَا عِنْدَكَ

Walā anālu mā ʿindaka

or obtain what is with You

إِلَّا بِطَاعَتِكَ وَبِفَضْلِ رَحْمَتِكَ.

Illā biṭāʿatika wabifaḍli raḥmatika.

except by obeying You and through Your gracious mercy.

إِلَهِي أَصْبَحْتُ وَأَمْسَيْتُ عَبْدًا دَاخِرًا لَكَ،

Ilāhī aṣbaḥtu wa-amsaytu ʿabdan dākhiran laka,

My God, morning and evening I am Your humble servant,

لَا أَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِي نَفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا إِلَّا بِكَ.

Lā amliku linafsī nafʿan walā ḍarran illā bika.

unable to bring myself benefit or harm except through You.

أَشْهَدُ بِذَلِكَ عَلَى نَفْسِي،

Ashhadu bi-dhālika ʿalā nafsī,

I bear witness to this about myself,

وَأَعْتَرِفُ بِضَعْفِ قُوَّتِي وَقِلَّةِ حِيلَتِي.

Wa-aʿtarifu biḍaʿfi quwwatī waqillati ḥīlatī.

and admit how weak my strength and how few my resources are.

فَأَنْجِزْ لِي مَا وَعَدْتَنِي،

Fa-anjiz lī mā waʿadtanī,

Fulfil for me what You have promised,

وَتَمِّمْ لِي مَا آتَيْتَنِي،

Watammim lī mā ātaytanī,

and complete what You have given me,

فَإِنِّي عَبْدُكَ الْمِسْكِينُ الْمُسْتَكِينُ،

Fa-innī ʿabduka al-miskīnu al-mustakīnu,

for I am Your servant, needy and submissive,

الضَّعِيفُ الضَّرِيرُ الذَّلِيلُ الْحَقِيرُ،

Al-ḍaʿīfu al-ḍarīru al-dhalīlu al-ḥaqīru,

weak, afflicted, lowly, and insignificant,

الْمَهِينُ الْفَقِيرُ الْخَائِفُ الْمُسْتَجِيرُ.

Al-mahīnu al-faqīru al-khāʾifu al-mustajīru.

abased, poor, afraid, and seeking shelter.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي نَاسِيًا لِذِكْرِكَ فِيمَا أَوْلَيْتَنِي،

Walā tajʿalnī nāsiyan lidhikrika fīmā awlaytanī,

Let me not forget to remember You amid what You have given me,

وَلَا غَافِلًا لِإِحْسَانِكَ فِيمَا أَبْلَيْتَنِي،

Walā ghāfilan liʾiḥsānika fīmā ablaytanī,

nor overlook Your kindness in the trials You send me.

وَلَا آيِسًا مِنْ إِجَابَتِكَ لِي وَإِنْ أَبْطَأَتْ عَنِّي،

Walā āyisan min ijābatika lī wa-in abṭaʾat ʿannī,

Let me not despair of Your answer, however long it takes,

فِي سَرَّاءَ كُنْتُ أَوْ ضَرَّاءَ،

Fī sarrāʾa kuntu aw ḍarrāʾa,

whether I am in happiness or hardship,

أَوْ شِدَّةٍ أَوْ رَخَاءٍ،

Aw shiddatin aw rakhāʾin,

distress or ease,

أَوْ عَافِيَةٍ أَوْ بَلَاءٍ،

Aw ʿāfiyatin aw balāʾin,

wellbeing or affliction,

أَوْ بُؤْسٍ أَوْ نَعْمَاءَ،

Aw buʾsin aw naʿmāʾa,

misery or comfort,

أَوْ جِدَةٍ أَوْ لَأْوَاءَ،

Aw jidatin aw laʾwāʾa,

abundance or adversity,

أَوْ فَقْرٍ أَوْ غِنًى.

Aw faqrin aw ghinan.

poverty or wealth.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْ ثَنَائِي عَلَيْكَ وَمَدْحِي إِيَّاكَ

Wa-ijʿal thanāʾī ʿalayka wamadḥī iyyāka

Let my celebration and my praise of You,

وَحَمْدِي لَكَ فِي كُلِّ حَالَاتِي،

Waḥamdī laka fī kulli ḥālātī,

and my thanksgiving to You, endure in every state,

حَتَّى لَا أَفْرَحَ بِمَا آتَيْتَنِي مِنَ الدُّنْيَا،

Ḥattā lā afraḥa bimā ātaytanī mina al-dunyā,

so that I do not exult in the worldly things You give me

وَلَا أَحْزَنَ عَلَى مَا مَنَعْتَنِي فِيهَا.

Walā aḥzana ʿalā mā manaʿtanī fīhā.

or grieve over what You withhold from me in this world.

وَأَشْعِرْ قَلْبِي تَقْوَاكَ،

Wa-ashʿir qalbī taqwāka,

Make reverence for You my heart's innermost garment.

وَاسْتَعْمِلْ بَدَنِي فِيمَا تَقْبَلُهُ مِنِّي،

Wa-istaʿmil badanī fīmā taqbaluhu minnī,

Engage my body in deeds that You accept from me.

وَاشْغَلْ بِطَاعَتِكَ نَفْسِي عَنْ كُلِّ مَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ،

Wa-ishghal biṭāʿatika nafsī ʿan kulli mā yaridu ʿalayya,

Occupy my soul with obeying You above all that comes to me,

حَتَّى لَا أُحِبَّ شَيْئًا مِنْ سُخْطِكَ،

Ḥattā lā uḥibba shayʾan min sukhṭika,

so that I love nothing that displeases You

وَلَا أَسْخَطَ شَيْئًا مِنْ رِضَاكَ.

Walā askhaṭa shayʾan min riḍāka.

and resent nothing that pleases You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَفَرِّغْ قَلْبِي لِمَحَبَّتِكَ،

Wafarrigh qalbī limaḥabbatika,

Free my heart for Your love,

وَاشْغَلْهُ بِذِكْرِكَ،

Wa-ishghalhu bidhikrika,

occupy it with remembering You,

وَانْعَشْهُ بِخَوْفِكَ وَبِالْوَجَلِ مِنْكَ،

Wa-inʿashhu bikhawfika wabi-al-wajali minka,

revive it through fear and awe of You,

وَقَوِّهِ بِالرَّغْبَةِ إِلَيْكَ،

Waqawwihi bi-al-raghbati ilayka,

strengthen it through longing for You,

وَأَمِلْهُ إِلَى طَاعَتِكَ،

Wa-amilhu ilā ṭāʿatika,

turn it towards obeying You,

وَأَجْرِ بِهِ فِي أَحَبِّ السُّبُلِ إِلَيْكَ،

Wa-ajri bihi fī aḥabbi al-subuli ilayka,

and lead it along the paths most beloved to You.

وَذَلِّلْهُ بِالرَّغْبَةِ فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ

Wadhallilhu bi-al-raghbati fīmā ʿindaka

Make it humble through desire for what is with You

أَيَّامَ حَيَاتِي كُلَّهَا.

Ayyāma ḥayātī kullahā.

throughout every day of my life.

وَاجْعَلْ تَقْوَاكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا زَادِي،

Wa-ijʿal taqwāka mina al-dunyā zādī,

Make reverence for You my provision from this world,

وَإِلَى رَحْمَتِكَ رِحْلَتِي،

Wa-ilā raḥmatika riḥlatī,

Your mercy the destination of my journey,

وَفِي مَرْضَاتِكَ مَدْخَلِي.

Wafī marḍātika madkhalī.

and Your good pleasure the place I enter.

وَاجْعَلْ فِي جَنَّتِكَ مَثْوَايَ،

Wa-ijʿal fī jannatika mathwāya,

Make Your Garden my dwelling,

وَهَبْ لِي قُوَّةً أَحْتَمِلُ بِهَا جَمِيعَ مَرْضَاتِكَ.

Wahab lī quwwatan aḥtamilu bihā jamīʿa marḍātika.

and grant me strength to undertake all that pleases You.

وَاجْعَلْ فِرَارِي إِلَيْكَ،

Wa-ijʿal firārī ilayka,

Let my flight be to You,

وَرَغْبَتِي فِيمَا عِنْدَكَ،

Waraghbatī fīmā ʿindaka,

and my desire for what is with You.

وَأَلْبِسْ قَلْبِيَ الْوَحْشَةَ مِنْ شِرَارِ خَلْقِكَ،

Wa-albis qalbiya al-waḥshata min shirāri khalqika,

Fill my heart with aversion to the worst of Your creatures.

وَهَبْ لِيَ الْأُنْسَ بِكَ

Wahab liya al-unsa bika

Grant me the joy of intimacy with You,

وَبِأَوْلِيَائِكَ وَأَهْلِ طَاعَتِكَ.

Wabiʾawliyāʾika wa-ahli ṭāʿatika.

with Your friends, and with those who obey You.

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ لِفَاجِرٍ وَلَا كَافِرٍ عَلَيَّ مِنَّةً،

Walā tajʿal lifājirin walā kāfirin ʿalayya minnatan,

Let no evildoer or unbeliever hold a favour over me,

وَلَا لَهُ عِنْدِي يَدًا،

Walā lahu ʿindī yadan,

or have a claim on my gratitude,

وَلَا بِي إِلَيْهِمْ حَاجَةً.

Walā bī ilayhim ḥājatan.

and let me have no need of them.

بَلِ اجْعَلْ سُكُونَ قَلْبِي وَأُنْسَ نَفْسِي،

Bali ijʿal sukūna qalbī wa-unsa nafsī,

Instead, let my heart's peace and my soul's comfort,

وَاسْتِغْنَائِي وَكِفَايَتِي،

Wa-istighnāʾī wakifāyatī,

my freedom from need and my sufficiency,

بِكَ وَبِخِيَارِ خَلْقِكَ.

Bika wabikhiyāri khalqika.

come through You and the best of Your creatures.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْنِي لَهُمْ قَرِينًا،

Wa-ijʿalnī lahum qarīnan,

Make me their companion,

وَاجْعَلْنِي لَهُمْ نَصِيرًا.

Wa-ijʿalnī lahum naṣīran.

and make me their helper.

وَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِشَوْقٍ إِلَيْكَ،

Wa-umnun ʿalayya bishawqin ilayka,

Favour me with longing for You

وَبِالْعَمَلِ لَكَ بِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضَى.

Wabi-al-ʿamali laka bimā tuḥibbu watarḍā.

and with working for You in ways You love and approve.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ،

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun,

You have power over all things,

وَذَلِكَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ.

Wa-dhālika ʿalayka yasīrun.

and this is easy for You.

Al-duʿāʾu 22

Prayer 22

عِنْدَ الشِّدَّةِ وَالْجَهْدِ وَتَعَسُّرِ الْأُمُورِ

ʿinda al-shiddati wa-al-jahdi wataʿassuri al-umūri

In distress, hardship, and difficult circumstances

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ كَلَّفْتَنِي مِنْ نَفْسِي

Allāhumma innaka kallaftanī min nafsī

O God, You have required of me, concerning myself,

مَا أَنْتَ أَمْلَكُ بِهِ مِنِّي،

Mā anta amlaku bihi minnī,

what You have greater mastery over than I do.

وَقُدْرَتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَيَّ أَغْلَبُ مِنْ قُدْرَتِي.

Waqudratuka ʿalayhi waʿalayya aghlabu min qudratī.

Your power over it and over me is greater than my own.

فَأَعْطِنِي مِنْ نَفْسِي مَا يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي،

Fa-aʿṭinī min nafsī mā yurḍīka ʿannī,

So grant me from myself what will make You pleased with me,

وَخُذْ لِنَفْسِكَ رِضَاهَا مِنْ نَفْسِي فِي عَافِيَةٍ.

Wakhudh linafsika riḍāhā min nafsī fī ʿāfiyatin.

and take from me what pleases You, while keeping me well.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا طَاقَةَ لِي بِالْجَهْدِ،

Allāhumma lā ṭāqata lī bi-al-jahdi,

O God, I have no endurance for hardship,

وَلَا صَبْرَ لِي عَلَى الْبَلَاءِ،

Walā ṣabra lī ʿalā al-balāʾi,

no patience with affliction,

وَلَا قُوَّةَ لِي عَلَى الْفَقْرِ.

Walā quwwata lī ʿalā al-faqri.

and no strength to bear poverty.

فَلَا تَحْظُرْ عَلَيَّ رِزْقِي،

Falā taḥẓur ʿalayya rizqī,

Do not bar me from my provision,

وَلَا تَكِلْنِي إِلَى خَلْقِكَ.

Walā takilnī ilā khalqika.

and do not leave me to Your creatures.

بَلْ تَفَرَّدْ بِحَاجَتِي وَتَوَلَّ كِفَايَتِي.

Bal tafarrad biḥājatī watawalla kifāyatī.

Take sole charge of my needs and see to my sufficiency.

وَانْظُرْ إِلَيَّ وَانْظُرْ لِي فِي جَمِيعِ أُمُورِي،

Wa-unẓur ilayya wa-unẓur lī fī jamīʿi umūrī,

Look upon me with care and watch over all my affairs.

فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ وَكَلْتَنِي إِلَى نَفْسِي عَجَزْتُ عَنْهَا،

Fa-innaka in wakaltanī ilā nafsī ʿajaztu ʿanhā,

If You leave me to myself, I will be unable to manage myself

وَلَمْ أُقِمْ مَا فِيهِ مَصْلَحَتُهَا.

Walam uqim mā fīhi maṣlaḥatuhā.

or establish what is good for me.

وَإِنْ وَكَلْتَنِي إِلَى خَلْقِكَ تَجَهَّمُونِي،

Wa-in wakaltanī ilā khalqika tajahhamūnī,

If You leave me to Your creatures, they will meet me harshly.

وَإِنْ أَلْجَأْتَنِي إِلَى قَرَابَتِي حَرَمُونِي،

Wa-in aljaʾtanī ilā qarābatī ḥaramūnī,

If You drive me to my relatives, they will deprive me.

وَإِنْ أَعْطَوْا أَعْطَوْا قَلِيلًا نَكِدًا،

Wa-in aʿṭaw aʿṭaw qalīlan nakidan,

If they give, they will give little, and grudgingly,

وَمَنُّوا عَلَيَّ طَوِيلًا وَذَمُّوا كَثِيرًا.

Wamannū ʿalayya ṭawīlan wadhammū kathīran.

reminding me of it for a long time and reproaching me often.

فَبِفَضْلِكَ اللَّهُمَّ فَأَغْنِنِي،

Fabifaḍlika Allāhumma fa-aghninī,

Through Your bounty, O God, free me from need;

وَبِعَظَمَتِكَ فَانْعَشْنِي،

Wabiʿaẓamatika fa-inʿashnī,

through Your greatness, raise me up;

وَبِسَعَتِكَ فَابْسُطْ يَدِي،

Wabisaʿatika fa-ubsuṭ yadī,

through Your abundance, fill my hands;

وَبِمَا عِنْدَكَ فَاكْفِنِي.

Wabimā ʿindaka fa-ikfinī.

and through what is with You, provide me with enough.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَخَلِّصْنِي مِنَ الْحَسَدِ،

Wakhalliṣnī mina al-ḥasadi,

Free me from envy,

وَاحْصُرْنِي عَنِ الذُّنُوبِ،

Wa-uḥṣurnī ʿani al-dhunūbi,

restrain me from sins,

وَوَرِّعْنِي عَنِ الْمَحَارِمِ،

Wawarriʿnī ʿani al-maḥārimi,

give me scruples against forbidden things,

وَلَا تُجَرِّئْنِي عَلَى الْمَعَاصِي.

Walā tujarriʾnī ʿalā al-maʿāṣī.

and do not let me grow bold in disobedience.

وَاجْعَلْ هَوَايَ عِنْدَكَ،

Wa-ijʿal hawāya ʿindaka,

Let my desire rest with You,

وَرِضَايَ فِيمَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ مِنْكَ.

Wariḍāya fīmā yaridu ʿalayya minka.

and my contentment with whatever comes to me from You.

وَبَارِكْ لِي فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنِي،

Wabārik lī fīmā razaqtanī,

Bless for me what You have provided,

وَفِيمَا خَوَّلْتَنِي،

Wafīmā khawwaltanī,

what You have entrusted to me,

وَفِيمَا أَنْعَمْتَ بِهِ عَلَيَّ.

Wafīmā anʿamta bihi ʿalayya.

and what You have graciously bestowed on me.

وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي كُلِّ حَالَاتِي

Wa-ijʿalnī fī kulli ḥālātī

In every condition, keep me

مَحْفُوظًا مَكْلُوءًا مَسْتُورًا،

Maḥfūẓan maklūʾan mastūran,

protected, watched over, and covered,

مَمْنُوعًا مُعَاذًا مُجَارًا.

Mamnūʿan muʿādhan mujāran.

defended, sheltered, and secure.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاقْضِ عَنِّي كُلَّ مَا أَلْزَمْتَنِيهِ وَفَرَضْتَهُ عَلَيَّ،

Wa-iqḍi ʿannī kulla mā alzamtanīhi wafaraḍtahu ʿalayya,

Discharge for me every duty You have laid upon me,

لَكَ فِي وَجْهٍ مِنْ وُجُوهِ طَاعَتِكَ،

Laka fī wajhin min wujūhi ṭāʿatika,

whether owed to You in any form of obedience

أَوْ لِخَلْقٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ،

Aw likhalqin min khalqika,

or owed to any of Your creatures,

وَإِنْ ضَعُفَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ بَدَنِي،

Wa-in ḍaʿufa ʿan dhālika badanī,

even if my body is too weak for it,

وَوَهَنَتْ عَنْهُ قُوَّتِي،

Wawahanat ʿanhu quwwatī,

my strength fails before it,

وَلَمْ تَنَلْهُ مَقْدُرَتِي،

Walam tanalhu maqduratī,

my ability cannot reach it,

وَلَمْ يَسَعْهُ مَالِي وَلَا ذَاتُ يَدِي،

Walam yasaʿhu mālī walā dhātu yadī,

and my wealth and possessions cannot cover it,

ذَكَرْتُهُ أَوْ نَسِيتُهُ.

Dhakartuhu aw nasītuhu.

whether I remember it or have forgotten it.

هُوَ يَا رَبِّ مِمَّا قَدْ أَحْصَيْتَهُ عَلَيَّ،

Huwa yā rabbi mimmā qad aḥṣaytahu ʿalayya,

It is, my Lord, among the things You have counted against me

وَأَغْفَلْتُهُ أَنَا مِنْ نَفْسِي.

Wa-aghfaltuhu anā min nafsī.

but I myself have overlooked.

فَأَدِّهِ عَنِّي مِنْ جَزِيلِ عَطِيَّتِكَ

Fa-addihi ʿannī min jazīli ʿaṭiyyatika

Settle it on my behalf from Your lavish gifts

وَكَثِيرِ مَا عِنْدَكَ،

Wakathīri mā ʿindaka,

and the abundance of what is with You,

فَإِنَّكَ وَاسِعٌ كَرِيمٌ،

Fa-innaka wāsiʿun karīmun,

for You are boundless and generous,

حَتَّى لَا يَبْقَى عَلَيَّ شَيْءٌ مِنْهُ

Ḥattā lā yabqā ʿalayya shayʾun minhu

so that no part of it remains against me

تُرِيدُ أَنْ تُقَاصَّنِي بِهِ مِنْ حَسَنَاتِي،

Turīdu an tuqāṣṣanī bihi min ḥasanātī,

for which You would deduct from my good deeds

أَوْ تُضَاعِفَ بِهِ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِي

Aw tuḍāʿifa bihi min sayyiʾātī

or multiply my bad deeds

يَوْمَ أَلْقَاكَ يَا رَبِّ.

Yawma alqāka yā rabbi.

on the day I meet You, my Lord.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَارْزُقْنِي الرَّغْبَةَ فِي الْعَمَلِ لَكَ لِآخِرَتِي،

Wa-urzuqnī al-raghbata fī al-ʿamali laka liʾākhiratī,

Grant me the desire to work for You for the sake of my hereafter,

حَتَّى أَعْرِفَ صِدْقَ ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَلْبِي،

Ḥattā aʿrifa ṣidqa dhālika min qalbī,

until I know that desire to be sincere within my heart,

وَحَتَّى يَكُونَ الْغَالِبُ عَلَيَّ الزُّهْدَ فِي دُنْيَايَ،

Waḥattā yakūna al-ghālibu ʿalayya al-zuhda fī dunyāya,

and detachment from worldly life becomes my prevailing state.

وَحَتَّى أَعْمَلَ الْحَسَنَاتِ شَوْقًا،

Waḥattā aʿmala al-ḥasanāti shawqan,

Let me do good deeds out of longing,

وَآمَنَ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ فَرَقًا وَخَوْفًا،

Wa-āmana mina al-sayyiʾāti faraqan wakhawfan,

and remain safe from bad deeds through dread and fear.

وَهَبْ لِي نُورًا أَمْشِي بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ،

Wahab lī nūran amshī bihi fī al-nāsi,

Grant me a light by which to walk among people,

وَأَهْتَدِي بِهِ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ،

Wa-ahtadī bihi fī al-ẓulumāti,

find my way through darkness,

وَأَسْتَضِيءُ بِهِ مِنَ الشَّكِّ وَالشُّبُهَاتِ.

Wa-astaḍīʾu bihi mina al-shakki wa-al-shubuhāti.

and gain illumination amid doubt and uncertainty.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَارْزُقْنِي خَوْفَ غَمِّ الْوَعِيدِ،

Wa-urzuqnī khawfa ghammi al-waʿīdi,

Grant me fear of the anguish You have warned of,

وَشَوْقَ ثَوَابِ الْمَوْعُودِ،

Washawqa thawābi al-mawʿūdi,

and longing for the reward You have promised,

حَتَّى أَجِدَ لَذَّةَ مَا أَدْعُوكَ لَهُ،

Ḥattā ajida ladhdhata mā adʿūka lahu,

until I taste the delight of what I pray to You for

وَكَأْبَةَ مَا أَسْتَجِيرُ بِكَ مِنْهُ.

Wakaʾbata mā astajīru bika minhu.

and the sorrow of what I seek Your protection from.

اللَّهُمَّ قَدْ تَعْلَمُ مَا يُصْلِحُنِي

Allāhumma qad taʿlamu mā yuṣliḥunī

O God, You know what will set me right

مِنْ أَمْرِ دُنْيَايَ وَآخِرَتِي،

Min amri dunyāya wa-ākhiratī,

in the affairs of this life and the next,

فَكُنْ بِحَوَائِجِي حَفِيًّا.

Fakun biḥawāʾijī ḥafiyyan.

so attend with care to my needs.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin,

O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَارْزُقْنِي الْحَقَّ عِنْدَ تَقْصِيرِي فِي الشُّكْرِ لَكَ

Wa-urzuqnī al-ḥaqqa ʿinda taqṣīrī fī al-shukri laka

Grant me what is right when I fall short in thanking You

بِمَا أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيَّ

Bimā anʿamta ʿalayya

for the blessings You have bestowed on me

فِي الْيُسْرِ وَالْعُسْرِ وَالصِّحَّةِ وَالسَّقَمِ،

Fī al-yusri wa-al-ʿusri wa-al-ṣiḥḥati wa-al-saqami,

in ease and hardship, health and sickness,

حَتَّى أَتَعَرَّفَ مِنْ نَفْسِي رَوْحَ الرِّضَا

Ḥattā ataʿarrafa min nafsī rawḥa al-riḍā

until I recognize within myself the relief of contentment

وَطُمَأْنِينَةَ النَّفْسِ مِنِّي بِمَا يَجِبُ لَكَ

Waṭumaʾnīnata al-nafsi minnī bimā yajibu laka

and my soul rests peacefully in fulfilling what I owe You,

فِيمَا يَحْدُثُ فِي حَالِ الْخَوْفِ وَالْأَمْنِ،

Fīmā yaḥduthu fī ḥāli al-khawfi wa-al-amni,

whatever happens in fear or safety,

وَالرِّضَا وَالسُّخْطِ،

Wa-al-riḍā wa-al-sukhṭi,

satisfaction or displeasure,

وَالضَّرِّ وَالنَّفْعِ.

Wa-al-ḍarri wa-al-nafʿi.

harm or benefit.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَارْزُقْنِي سَلَامَةَ الصَّدْرِ مِنَ الْحَسَدِ،

Wa-urzuqnī salāmata al-ṣadri mina al-ḥasadi,

Grant me a heart free from envy,

حَتَّى لَا أَحْسُدَ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ

Ḥattā lā aḥsuda aḥadan min khalqika

so that I envy none of Your creatures

عَلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ،

ʿalā shayʾin min faḍlika,

for any share of Your bounty,

وَحَتَّى لَا أَرَى نِعْمَةً مِنْ نِعَمِكَ

Waḥattā lā arā niʿmatan min niʿamika

and whenever I see one of Your blessings

عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ،

ʿalā aḥadin min khalqika,

bestowed on one of Your creatures,

فِي دِينٍ أَوْ دُنْيَا،

Fī dīnin aw dunyā,

in religion or worldly life,

أَوْ عَافِيَةٍ أَوْ تَقْوَى،

Aw ʿāfiyatin aw taqwā,

wellbeing or piety,

أَوْ سَعَةٍ أَوْ رَخَاءٍ،

Aw saʿatin aw rakhāʾin,

abundance or ease,

إِلَّا رَجَوْتُ لِنَفْسِي أَفْضَلَ ذَلِكَ،

Illā rajawtu linafsī afḍala dhālika,

I hope for the best of that for myself,

بِكَ وَمِنْكَ وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ.

Bika waminka waḥdaka lā sharīka laka.

through You and from You alone, who have no partner.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَارْزُقْنِي التَّحَفُّظَ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا،

Wa-urzuqnī al-taḥaffuẓa mina al-khaṭāyā,

Grant me vigilance against sins

وَالِاحْتِرَاسَ مِنَ الزَّلَلِ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ،

Wa-al-iḥtirāsa mina al-zalali fī al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati,

and protection from stumbling in this world and the next,

فِي حَالِ الرِّضَا وَالْغَضَبِ،

Fī ḥāli al-riḍā wa-al-ghaḍabi,

in states of contentment and anger,

حَتَّى أَكُونَ بِمَا يَرِدُ عَلَيَّ مِنْهُمَا

Ḥattā akūna bimā yaridu ʿalayya minhumā

so that whatever comes to me from either state,

بِمَنْزِلَةٍ سَوَاءٍ،

Bimanzilatin sawāʾin,

I remain even in my conduct,

عَامِلًا بِطَاعَتِكَ مُؤْثِرًا لِرِضَاكَ

ʿāmilan biṭāʿatika muʾthiran liriḍāka

acting in obedience to You and preferring Your good pleasure

عَلَى مَا سِوَاهُمَا فِي الْأَوْلِيَاءِ وَالْأَعْدَاءِ،

ʿalā mā siwāhumā fī al-awliyāʾi wa-al-aʿdāʾi,

above anything else in dealing with friends and enemies.

حَتَّى يَأْمَنَ عَدُوِّي مِنْ ظُلْمِي وَجَوْرِي،

Ḥattā yaʾmana ʿaduwwī min ẓulmī wajawrī,

Let my enemy be safe from my wrongdoing and injustice,

وَيَيْأَسَ وَلِيِّي مِنْ مَيْلِي وَانْحِطَاطِ هَوَايَ.

Wayayʾasa waliyyī min maylī wa-inḥiṭāṭi hawāya.

and my friend expect no favouritism or surrender to desire.

وَاجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنْ يَدْعُوكَ مُخْلِصًا فِي الرَّخَاءِ،

Wa-ijʿalnī mimman yadʿūka mukhliṣan fī al-rakhāʾi,

Make me one who calls on You sincerely in times of ease,

دُعَاءَ الْمُخْلِصِينَ الْمُضْطَرِّينَ لَكَ فِي الدُّعَاءِ.

Duʿāʾa al-mukhliṣīna al-muḍṭarrīna laka fī al-duʿāʾi.

with the prayer of those who turn to You sincerely in dire need.

إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ.

Innaka ḥamīdun majīdun.

You are worthy of all praise, full of glory.

Al-duʿāʾu 23

Prayer 23

إِذَا سَأَلَ اللَّهَ الْعَافِيَةَ وَشُكْرَهَا

Idhā saʾala Allāha al-ʿāfiyata washukrahā

Asking God for wellbeing and gratitude for it

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَلْبِسْنِي عَافِيَتَكَ،

Wa-albisnī ʿāfiyataka,

Clothe me in Your gift of wellbeing,

وَجَلِّلْنِي عَافِيَتَكَ،

Wajallilnī ʿāfiyataka,

cover me with Your wellbeing,

وَحَصِّنِّي بِعَافِيَتِكَ،

Waḥaṣṣinnī biʿāfiyatika,

fortify me through Your wellbeing,

وَأَكْرِمْنِي بِعَافِيَتِكَ،

Wa-akrimnī biʿāfiyatika,

honour me through Your wellbeing,

وَأَغْنِنِي بِعَافِيَتِكَ،

Wa-aghninī biʿāfiyatika,

enrich me through Your wellbeing,

وَتَصَدَّقْ عَلَيَّ بِعَافِيَتِكَ،

Wataṣaddaq ʿalayya biʿāfiyatika,

bestow Your wellbeing on me as an act of charity,

وَهَبْ لِي عَافِيَتَكَ،

Wahab lī ʿāfiyataka,

give me Your wellbeing,

وَأَفْرِشْنِي عَافِيَتَكَ،

Wa-afrishnī ʿāfiyataka,

spread Your wellbeing beneath me,

وَأَصْلِحْ لِي عَافِيَتَكَ.

Wa-aṣliḥ lī ʿāfiyataka.

Make Your gift of wellbeing wholesome for me,

وَلَا تُفَرِّقْ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ عَافِيَتَكَ

Walā tufarriq baynī wabayna ʿāfiyataka

and do not separate me from Your wellbeing

فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.

Fī al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati.

in this world or the next.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَعَافِنِي عَافِيَةً كَافِيَةً شَافِيَةً عَالِيَةً نَامِيَةً،

Waʿāfinī ʿāfiyatan kāfiyatan shāfiyatan ʿāliyatan nāmiyatan,

Give me wellbeing that is sufficient, healing, lofty, and growing,

عَافِيَةً تُوَلِّدُ فِي بَدَنِي الْعَافِيَةَ،

ʿāfiyatan tuwallidu fī badanī al-ʿāfiyata,

wellbeing that brings forth wellbeing in my body,

عَافِيَةَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ.

ʿāfiyata al-dunyā wa-al-ākhirati.

wellbeing in this life and the next.

وَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِالصِّحَّةِ وَالْأَمْنِ وَالسَّلَامَةِ

Wa-umnun ʿalayya bi-al-ṣiḥḥati wa-al-amni wa-al-salāmati

Favour me with health, security, and soundness

فِي دِينِي وَبَدَنِي،

Fī dīnī wabadanī,

in my religion and my body,

وَالْبَصِيرَةِ فِي قَلْبِي،

Wa-al-baṣīrati fī qalbī,

insight in my heart,

وَالنَّفَاذِ فِي أُمُورِي،

Wa-al-nafādhi fī umūrī,

the ability to carry my affairs through,

وَالْخَشْيَةِ لَكَ وَالْخَوْفِ مِنْكَ،

Wa-al-khashyati laka wa-al-khawfi minka,

reverence for You and fear of You,

وَالْقُوَّةِ عَلَى مَا أَمَرْتَنِي بِهِ مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ،

Wa-al-quwwati ʿalā mā amartanī bihi min ṭāʿatika,

strength to perform the acts of obedience You have commanded,

وَالِاجْتِنَابِ لِمَا نَهَيْتَنِي عَنْهُ مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ.

Wa-al-ijtinābi limā nahaytanī ʿanhu min maʿṣiyatika.

and avoidance of the disobedience You have forbidden.

اللَّهُمَّ وَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِالْحَجِّ وَالْعُمْرَةِ،

Allāhumma wa-umnun ʿalayya bi-al-ḥajji wa-al-ʿumrati,

O God, favour me with the Hajj and the ʿUmra pilgrimages,

وَزِيَارَةِ قَبْرِ رَسُولِكَ،

Waziyārati qabri rasūlika,

and with visiting the grave of Your Messenger,

صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَرَحْمَتُكَ

Ṣalawātuka ʿalayhi waraḥmatuka

Your blessings and mercy be upon him,

وَبَرَكَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ،

Wabarakātuka ʿalayhi waʿalā ālihi,

and Your benedictions upon him and his family,

وَآلِ رَسُولِكَ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ،

Wa-āli rasūlika ʿalayhimu al-salāmu,

and visiting Your Messenger's family, peace be upon them,

أَبَدًا مَا أَبْقَيْتَنِي،

Abadan mā abqaytanī,

for as long as You keep me alive,

فِي عَامِي هَذَا وَفِي كُلِّ عَامٍ.

Fī ʿāmī hādhā wafī kulli ʿāmin.

in this year of mine and in every year.

وَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ مَقْبُولًا مَشْكُورًا،

Wa-ijʿal dhālika maqbūlan mashkūran,

Let these acts be accepted and rewarded,

مَذْكُورًا لَدَيْكَ مَذْخُورًا عِنْدَكَ.

Madhkūran ladayka madhkhūran ʿindaka.

remembered before You and stored up with You.

وَأَنْطِقْ بِحَمْدِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَذِكْرِكَ

Wa-anṭiq biḥamdika washukrika wadhikrika

Let praise, gratitude, and remembrance of You,

وَحُسْنِ الثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْكَ لِسَانِي.

Waḥusni al-thanāʾi ʿalayka lisānī.

and beautiful words celebrating You, flow from my tongue.

وَاشْرَحْ لِمَرَاشِدِ دِينِكَ قَلْبِي.

Wa-ishraḥ limarāshidi dīnika qalbī.

Open my heart to the paths of guidance in Your religion.

وَأَعِذْنِي وَذُرِّيَّتِي مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ،

Wa-aʿidhnī wadhurriyyatī mina al-shayṭāni al-rajīmi,

Protect me and my descendants from Satan, the outcast,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ السَّامَّةِ وَالْهَامَّةِ،

Wamin sharri al-sāmmati wa-al-hāmmati,

from the harm of venomous and creeping creatures,

وَالْعَامَّةِ وَاللَّامَّةِ،

Wa-al-ʿāmmati wa-al-lāmmati,

widespread calamities and the evil eye,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَرِيدٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli shayṭānin marīdin,

from the evil of every rebellious devil,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ سُلْطَانٍ عَنِيدٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli sulṭānin ʿanīdin,

and the evil of every stubborn tyrant.

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ مُتْرَفٍ حَفِيدٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli mutrafin ḥafīdin,

Protect me from every pampered person served by attendants,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ ضَعِيفٍ وَشَدِيدٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli ḍaʿīfin washadīdin,

from the evil of everyone weak or strong,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَرِيفٍ وَوَضِيعٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli sharīfin wawaḍīʿin,

everyone of high or low standing,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli ṣaghīrin wakabīrin,

everyone young or old,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ قَرِيبٍ وَبَعِيدٍ،

Wamin sharri kulli qarībin wabaʿīdin,

and everyone near or far.

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ مَنْ نَصَبَ لِرَسُولِكَ

Wamin sharri kulli man naṣaba lirasūlika

Protect me from the evil of all who wage war on Your Messenger

وَلِأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ حَرْبًا مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنْسِ،

Waliʾahli baytihi ḥarban mina al-jinni wa-al-insi,

and his household, whether jinn or human beings,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ دَابَّةٍ أَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا،

Wamin sharri kulli dābbatin anta ākhidhun bināṣiyatihā,

and from the evil of every creature whose forelock You hold.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ.

Innaka ʿalā ṣirāṭin mustaqīmin.

Your way is indeed straight.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَمَنْ أَرَادَنِي بِسُوءٍ فَاصْرِفْهُ عَنِّي،

Waman arādanī bisūʾin fa-iṣrifhu ʿannī,

Turn away from me anyone who means me harm,

وَادْحَرْ عَنِّي مَكْرَهُ،

Wa-idḥar ʿannī makrahu,

drive his scheming away from me,

وَادْرَأْ عَنِّي شَرَّهُ،

Wa-idraʾ ʿannī sharrahu,

ward off his evil,

وَرُدَّ كَيْدَهُ فِي نَحْرِهِ.

Warudda kaydahu fī naḥrihi.

and turn his plot back against his own throat.

وَاجْعَلْ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ سَدًّا،

Wa-ijʿal bayna yadayhi saddan,

Set a barrier before him,

حَتَّى تُعْمِيَ عَنِّي بَصَرَهُ،

Ḥattā tuʿmiya ʿannī baṣarahu,

so that You blind his eyes to me,

وَتُصِمَّ عَنْ ذِكْرِي سَمْعَهُ،

Watuṣimma ʿan dhikrī samʿahu,

deafen his ears to any mention of me,

وَتُقْفِلَ دُونَ إِخْطَارِي قَلْبَهُ،

Watuqfila dūna ikhṭārī qalbahu,

lock his heart against the thought of me,

وَتُخْرِسَ عَنِّي لِسَانَهُ،

Watukhrisa ʿannī lisānahu,

silence his tongue concerning me,

وَتَقْمَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَتُذِلَّ عِزَّهُ،

Wataqmaʿa raʾsahu watudhilla ʿizzahu,

force his head down and humble his might,

وَتَكْسِرَ جَبَرُوتَهُ وَتُذِلَّ رَقَبَتَهُ،

Wataksira jabarūtahu watudhilla raqabatahu,

break his tyranny and bow his neck,

وَتَفْسَخَ كِبْرَهُ،

Watafsakha kibrahu,

and undo his arrogance.

وَتُؤْمِنَنِي مِنْ جَمِيعِ ضَرِّهِ،

Watuʾminanī min jamīʿi ḍarrihi,

Keep me safe from all his harm,

وَشَرِّهِ وَغَمْزِهِ وَهَمْزِهِ وَلَمْزِهِ،

Washarrihi waghamzihi wahamzihi walamzihi,

his evil, his insinuations, his taunts, and his slander,

وَحَسَدِهِ وَعَدَاوَتِهِ،

Waḥasadihi waʿadāwatihi,

his envy and hostility,

وَحَبَائِلِهِ وَمَصَائِدِهِ،

Waḥabāʾilihi wamaṣāʾidihi,

his snares and traps,

وَرَجِلِهِ وَخَيْلِهِ.

Warajilihi wakhaylihi.

his foot soldiers and his horsemen.

إِنَّكَ عَزِيزٌ قَدِيرٌ.

Innaka ʿazīzun qadīrun.

You are mighty and all-powerful.

الدُّعَاءُ ٢٤

Al-duʿāʾu 24

Prayer 24

لِأَبَوَيْهِ عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ

Liʾabawayhi ʿalayhimā al-salāmu

For his parents, peace be upon them

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin ʿabdika warasūlika,

O God, bless Muhammad, Your servant and Messenger,

وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ الطَّاهِرِينَ،

Wa-ahli baytihi al-ṭāhirīna,

and the pure members of his household.

وَاخْصُصْهُمْ بِأَفْضَلِ صَلَوَاتِكَ

Wa-ukhṣuṣhum biʾafḍali ṣalawātika

Single them out for the finest of Your blessings,

وَرَحْمَتِكَ وَبَرَكَاتِكَ وَسَلَامِكَ.

Waraḥmatika wabarakātika wasalāmika.

Your mercy, Your benedictions, and Your peace.

وَاخْصُصِ اللَّهُمَّ وَالِدَيَّ بِالْكَرَامَةِ لَدَيْكَ،

Wa-ukhṣuṣi Allāhumma wālidayya bi-al-karāmati ladayka,

O God, grant my parents special honour in Your presence

وَالصَّلَاةِ مِنْكَ، يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Wa-al-ṣalāti minka, yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

and blessings from You, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَلْهِمْنِي عِلْمَ مَا يَجِبُ لَهُمَا عَلَيَّ إِلْهَامًا،

Wa-alhimnī ʿilma mā yajibu lahumā ʿalayya ilhāman,

Inspire me with knowledge of everything I owe them,

وَاجْمَعْ لِي عِلْمَ ذَلِكَ كُلِّهِ تَمَامًا.

Wa-ijmaʿ lī ʿilma dhālika kullihi tamāman.

and bring together for me that knowledge in its fullness.

ثُمَّ اسْتَعْمِلْنِي بِمَا تُلْهِمُنِي مِنْهُ،

Thumma istaʿmilnī bimā tulhimunī minhu,

Then enable me to act on what You inspire in me,

وَوَفِّقْنِي لِلنُّفُوذِ فِيمَا تُبَصِّرُنِي مِنْ عِلْمِهِ،

Wawaffiqnī li-l-nufūdhi fīmā tubaṣṣirunī min ʿilmihi,

and to carry through what You give me insight to understand,

حَتَّى لَا يَفُوتَنِي اسْتِعْمَالُ شَيْءٍ عَلَّمْتَنِيهِ،

Ḥattā lā yafūtanī istiʿmālu shayʾin ʿallamtanīhi,

so that I leave none of what You have taught me unpractised,

وَلَا تَثْقُلَ أَرْكَانِي عَنِ الْحُفُوفِ فِيمَا أَلْهَمْتَنِيهِ.

Walā tathqula arkānī ʿani al-ḥufūfi fīmā alhamtanīhi.

and my limbs do not grow too sluggish to act on Your inspiration.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ كَمَا شَرَّفْتَنَا بِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi kamā sharraftanā bihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family, as You honoured us through him.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family,

كَمَا أَوْجَبْتَ لَنَا الْحَقَّ عَلَى الْخَلْقِ بِسَبَبِهِ.

Kamā awjabta lanā al-ḥaqqa ʿalā al-khalqi bisababihi.

as You established our right over Your creatures because of him.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي أَهَابُهُمَا

Allāhumma ijʿalnī ahābuhumā

O God, let me stand in awe of my parents

هَيْبَةَ السُّلْطَانِ الْعَسُوفِ،

Haybata al-sulṭāni al-ʿasūfi,

as one stands in awe of a stern ruler,

وَأَبَرُّهُمَا بِرَّ الْأُمِّ الرَّؤُوفِ.

Wa-abarruhumā birra al-ummi al-raʾūfi.

and cherish them as a tender mother cherishes her child.

وَاجْعَلْ طَاعَتِي لِوَالِدَيَّ وَبِرِّي بِهِمَا

Wa-ijʿal ṭāʿatī liwālidayya wabirrī bihimā

Make obeying my parents and showing kindness to them

أَقَرَّ لِعَيْنِي مِنْ رَقْدَةِ الْوَسْنَانِ،

Aqarra liʿaynī min raqdati al-wasnāni,

more delightful to me than sleep to the drowsy,

وَأَثْلَجَ لِصَدْرِي مِنْ شَرْبَةِ الظَّمْآنِ،

Wa-athlaja liṣadrī min sharbati al-ẓamʾāni,

more refreshing to my breast than a drink to the thirsty,

حَتَّى أُوثِرَ عَلَى هَوَايَ هَوَاهُمَا،

Ḥattā ūthira ʿalā hawāya hawāhumā,

so that I prefer their wishes to my own,

وَأُقَدِّمَ عَلَى رِضَايَ رِضَاهُمَا،

Wa-uqaddima ʿalā riḍāya riḍāhumā,

put their satisfaction before my own,

وَأَسْتَكْثِرَ بِرَّهُمَا بِي وَإِنْ قَلَّ،

Wa-astakthira birrahumā bī wa-in qalla,

regard their kindness to me as much, however little,

وَأَسْتَقِلَّ بِرِّي بِهِمَا وَإِنْ كَثُرَ.

Wa-astaqilla birrī bihimā wa-in kathura.

and my kindness to them as little, however much.

اللَّهُمَّ خَفِّضْ لَهُمَا صَوْتِي،

Allāhumma khaffiḍ lahumā ṣawtī,

O God, lower my voice before them,

وَأَطِبْ لَهُمَا كَلَامِي،

Wa-aṭib lahumā kalāmī,

make my words pleasing to them,

وَأَلِنْ لَهُمَا عَرِيكَتِي،

Wa-alin lahumā ʿarīkatī,

soften my manner towards them,

وَاعْطِفْ عَلَيْهِمَا قَلْبِي،

Wa-iʿṭif ʿalayhimā qalbī,

turn my heart tenderly towards them,

وَصَيِّرْنِي بِهِمَا رَفِيقًا،

Waṣayyirnī bihimā rafīqan,

and make me gentle with them

وَعَلَيْهِمَا شَفِيقًا.

Waʿalayhimā shafīqan.

and caring towards them.

اللَّهُمَّ اشْكُرْ لَهُمَا تَرْبِيَتِي،

Allāhumma ushkur lahumā tarbiyatī,

O God, reward them for bringing me up,

وَأَثِبْهُمَا عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِي،

Wa-athibhumā ʿalā takrimatī,

recompense them for honouring me,

وَاحْفَظْ لَهُمَا مَا حَفِظَاهُ مِنِّي فِي صِغَرِي.

Wa-iḥfaẓ lahumā mā ḥafiẓāhu minnī fī ṣigharī.

and preserve for them the care they gave me as a child.

اللَّهُمَّ وَمَا مَسَّهُمَا مِنِّي مِنْ أَذًى،

Allāhumma wamā massahumā minnī min adhan,

O God, whatever hurt they suffered through me,

أَوْ خَلَصَ إِلَيْهِمَا عَنِّي مِنْ مَكْرُوهٍ،

Aw khalaṣa ilayhimā ʿannī min makrūhin,

whatever distress reached them because of me,

أَوْ ضَاعَ قِبَلِي لَهُمَا مِنْ حَقٍّ،

Aw ḍāʿa qibalī lahumā min ḥaqqin,

or whatever right of theirs I neglected,

فَاجْعَلْهُ حِطَّةً لِذُنُوبِهِمَا،

Fa-ijʿalhu ḥiṭṭatan lidhunūbihimā,

make it a removal of their sins,

وَعُلُوًّا فِي دَرَجَاتِهِمَا،

Waʿuluwwan fī darajātihimā,

an elevation of their ranks,

وَزِيَادَةً فِي حَسَنَاتِهِمَا،

Waziyādatan fī ḥasanātihimā,

and an increase in their good deeds,

يَا مُبَدِّلَ السَّيِّئَاتِ

Yā mubaddila al-sayyiʾāti

O You who replace bad deeds

بِأَضْعَافِهَا مِنَ الْحَسَنَاتِ.

Biʾaḍʿāfihā mina al-ḥasanāti.

with many times their number in good deeds.

اللَّهُمَّ وَمَا تَعَدَّيَا عَلَيَّ فِيهِ مِنْ قَوْلٍ،

Allāhumma wamā taʿaddayā ʿalayya fīhi min qawlin,

O God, whatever wrong they did me in speech,

أَوْ أَسْرَفَا عَلَيَّ فِيهِ مِنْ فِعْلٍ،

Aw asrafā ʿalayya fīhi min fiʿlin,

whatever excess they committed against me in action,

أَوْ ضَيَّعَاهُ لِي مِنْ حَقٍّ،

Aw ḍayyaʿāhu lī min ḥaqqin,

whatever right of mine they neglected,

أَوْ قَصَّرَا بِي عَنْهُ مِنْ وَاجِبٍ،

Aw qaṣṣarā bī ʿanhu min wājibin,

or whatever duty towards me they failed to fulfil,

فَقَدْ وَهَبْتُهُ وَجُدْتُ بِهِ عَلَيْهِمَا.

Faqad wahabtuhu wajudtu bihi ʿalayhimā.

I have freely forgiven it and generously released them from it.

وَرَغِبْتُ إِلَيْكَ فِي وَضْعِ تَبِعَتِهِ عَنْهُمَا،

Waraghibtu ilayka fī waḍʿi tabiʿatihi ʿanhumā,

I ask You to lift its consequences from them,

فَإِنِّي لَا أَتَّهِمُهُمَا عَلَى نَفْسِي،

Fa-innī lā attahimuhumā ʿalā nafsī,

for I do not suspect them of ill will towards me,

وَلَا أَسْتَبْطِئُهُمَا فِي بِرِّي،

Walā astabṭiʾuhumā fī birrī,

or consider them slow to show me kindness,

وَلَا أَكْرَهُ مَا تَوَلَّيَاهُ مِنْ أَمْرِي يَا رَبِّ.

Walā akrahu mā tawallayāhu min amrī yā rabbi.

or resent the care they took of my affairs, my Lord.

فَهُمَا أَوْجَبُ حَقًّا عَلَيَّ،

Fahumā awjabu ḥaqqan ʿalayya,

Their claim upon me is too binding,

وَأَقْدَمُ إِحْسَانًا إِلَيَّ،

Wa-aqdamu iḥsānan ilayya,

their kindness to me too long-standing,

وَأَعْظَمُ مِنَّةً لَدَيَّ

Wa-aʿẓamu minnatan ladayya

and their favour towards me too great

مِنْ أَنْ أُقَاصَّهُمَا بِعَدْلٍ،

Min an uqāṣṣahumā biʿadlin,

for me to settle accounts with them by strict justice

أَوْ أُجَازِيَهُمَا عَلَى مِثْلٍ.

Aw ujāziyahumā ʿalā mithlin.

or repay them in kind.

أَيْنَ إِذًا يَا إِلَهِي طُولُ شُغْلِهِمَا بِتَرْبِيَتِي؟

Ayna idhan yā ilāhī ṭūlu shughlihimā bitarbiyatī?

What then, my God, of all their time spent raising me?

وَأَيْنَ شِدَّةُ تَعَبِهِمَا فِي حِرَاسَتِي؟

Wa-ayna shiddatu taʿabihimā fī ḥirāsatī?

What of their exhausting labour in protecting me?

وَأَيْنَ إِقْتَارُهُمَا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمَا لِلتَّوْسِعَةِ عَلَيَّ؟

Wa-ayna iqtāruhumā ʿalā anfusihimā li-l-tawsiʿati ʿalayya?

What of their denying themselves to provide more generously for me?

هَيْهَاتَ مَا يَسْتَوْفِيَانِ مِنِّي حَقَّهُمَا،

Hayhāta mā yastawfiyāni minnī ḥaqqahumā,

Far from it! I can never give them all that is their due,

وَلَا أُدْرِكُ مَا يَجِبُ عَلَيَّ لَهُمَا،

Walā udriku mā yajibu ʿalayya lahumā,

never fully meet my obligations towards them,

وَلَا أَنَا بِقَاضٍ وَظِيفَةَ خِدْمَتِهِمَا.

Walā anā biqāḍin waẓīfata khidmatihimā.

nor discharge the duty of serving them.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

So bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَعِنِّي يَا خَيْرَ مَنِ اسْتُعِينَ بِهِ،

Wa-aʿinnī yā khayra mani ustuʿīna bihi,

and help me, O best of all whose help is sought.

وَوَفِّقْنِي يَا أَهْدَى مَنْ رُغِبَ إِلَيْهِ.

Wawaffiqnī yā ahdā man rughiba ilayhi.

Guide me to success, O surest Guide to whom one turns.

وَلَا تَجْعَلْنِي فِي أَهْلِ الْعُقُوقِ

Walā tajʿalnī fī ahli al-ʿuqūqi

Do not count me among those who are unkind

لِلْآبَاءِ وَالْأُمَّهَاتِ

Li-l-ābāʾi wa-al-ummahāti

to their fathers and mothers

يَوْمَ تُجْزَى كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ،

Yawma tujzā kullu nafsin bimā kasabat,

on the day every soul is repaid for what it has earned,

وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ.

Wahum lā yuẓlamūna.

and none will be wronged.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَذُرِّيَّتِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wadhurriyyatihi,

O God, bless Muhammad, his family, and his descendants.

وَاخْصُصْ أَبَوَيَّ بِأَفْضَلِ مَا خَصَصْتَ بِهِ

Wa-ukhṣuṣ abawayya biʾafḍali mā khaṣaṣta bihi

Grant my parents the finest favours You have granted

آبَاءَ عِبَادِكَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَأُمَّهَاتِهِمْ،

Ābāʾa ʿibādika al-muʾminīna wa-ummahātihim,

to the fathers and mothers of Your believing servants,

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا تُنْسِنِي ذِكْرَهُمَا

Allāhumma lā tunsinī dhikrahumā

O God, let me never forget to remember them

فِي أَدْبَارِ صَلَوَاتِي،

Fī adbāri ṣalawātī,

after my prayers,

وَفِي إِنًى مِنْ آنَاءِ لَيْلِي،

Wafī inan min ānāʾi laylī,

at the hours of my night,

وَفِي كُلِّ سَاعَةٍ مِنْ سَاعَاتِ نَهَارِي.

Wafī kulli sāʿatin min sāʿāti nahārī.

and at every hour of my day.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاغْفِرْ لِي بِدُعَائِي لَهُمَا،

Wa-ighfir lī biduʿāʾī lahumā,

Forgive me through my prayers for them,

وَاغْفِرْ لَهُمَا بِبِرِّهِمَا بِي مَغْفِرَةً حَتْمًا،

Wa-ighfir lahumā bibirrihimā bī maghfiratan ḥatman,

and forgive them for their kindness to me with certain forgiveness.

وَارْضَ عَنْهُمَا بِشَفَاعَتِي لَهُمَا رِضًى عَزْمًا،

Wa-irḍa ʿanhumā bishafāʿatī lahumā riḍan ʿazman,

Through my intercession, be firmly and truly pleased with them,

وَبَلِّغْهُمَا بِالْكَرَامَةِ مَوَاطِنَ السَّلَامَةِ.

Waballighhumā bi-al-karāmati mawāṭina al-salāmati.

and bring them with honour to the abodes of safety.

اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنْ سَبَقَتْ مَغْفِرَتُكَ لَهُمَا،

Allāhumma wa-in sabaqat maghfiratuka lahumā,

O God, if Your forgiveness reaches them first,

فَشَفِّعْهُمَا فِيَّ.

Fashaffiʿhumā fiyya.

accept their intercession for me.

وَإِنْ سَبَقَتْ مَغْفِرَتُكَ لِي،

Wa-in sabaqat maghfiratuka lī,

If Your forgiveness reaches me first,

فَشَفِّعْنِي فِيهِمَا،

Fashaffiʿnī fīhimā,

accept my intercession for them,

حَتَّى نَجْتَمِعَ بِرَأْفَتِكَ فِي دَارِ كَرَامَتِكَ

Ḥattā najtamiʿa biraʾfatika fī dāri karāmatika

until, through Your tenderness, we meet in the home of Your honour

وَمَحَلِّ مَغْفِرَتِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ.

Wamaḥalli maghfiratika waraḥmatika.

and the dwelling of Your forgiveness and mercy.

إِنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ وَالْمَنِّ الْقَدِيمِ،

Innaka dhū al-faḍli al-ʿaẓīmi wa-al-manni al-qadīmi,

Yours is immense bounty and favour from of old,

وَأَنْتَ أَرْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Wa-anta arḥamu al-rāḥimīna.

and You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

Text notes and sources

Arabic text. The text follows Document 3 of the nine-part Arabic edition. All twelve prayers were compared with their Arabic counterparts in the Al-Kafeel Islamic Library. Spelling, spacing, punctuation, and vocalization have been regularized for reading. The recitation directions at the end of Prayer 13 and the full closing words of Prayer 20 are retained.

Text corrections. Prayer 14 removes a duplicated Allāhumma. Its contrasting verbs are vocalized uẓlama and aẓlima, following Al-Kafeel: being wronged, then wronging others. Prayer 19 corrects the spelling of tamlaʾu. Prayer 20 corrects al-mukhālafa to al-mukhālaqa, meaning good dealings with others. Prayer 24 restores inan, a period or hour of time. Clear spelling and grammatical vowel errors have also been corrected.

Readings retained. Prayer 16 retains fī raḥmatihi, “within Your mercy”, from the base document; the comparison text reads fī wusʿihi, “within His abundance”. Other viable readings of the base text are retained. This reading edition does not attempt to catalogue every textual variant.

Terms and imagery. ʿĀfiya in Prayer 23 means wellbeing and protection from harm, extending beyond bodily health. The Hajj and ʿUmra are the major and lesser pilgrimages to Mecca. The forelock image in Prayers 21 and 23 expresses complete divine authority. Al-mirṣād in Prayer 20 evokes the place where deeds are watched and accounted for.

Translation and recitation. The English is a new rendering from the Arabic, preserving its devotional voice, repetitions, and imagery. It is not an official translation issued by the source institution. The Arabic remains the text for recitation; the transliteration is a reading aid. In Prayer 14, the bracketed name is a place to name the person concerned.

Qurʾānic echoes. The prayers incorporate Qurʾānic language within their own sentences. Clear examples include 2:201 near the end of Prayer 20, 11:56 in Prayer 23, and 45:22 in Prayer 24. The English follows the wording as it occurs in the prayer.
