The Complete Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādiyya

الْإِمَامُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ زَيْنُ الْعَابِدِينَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

Al-imāmu ʿaliyyu bnu al-ḥusayni zaynu al-ʿābidīna ʿalayhi al-salāmu

Al-adʿiyatu min 37 ilā 46

Prayers 37 to 46

Prayers 37 to 46 of the Complete Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādiyya. Each passage appears in fully vocalized Arabic, transliteration, and a new modern English translation. This volume moves from gratitude, forgiveness, and remembrance of death to prayers upon completing the Qur’an, seeing the new moon, and welcoming and bidding farewell to Ramadan. It closes with the prayer for Eid al-Fitr and Friday.

Reading the three lines

Read each group from Arabic to transliteration to English. Short passages continue the prayer in order; a line ending need not be the end of a sentence. Each three-line group stays together on one page.

ā ī ū mark long vowels; ʿ marks ʿayn and ʾ marks hamza within a word. Initial hamza is represented by its vowel. ḥ ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ distinguish Arabic consonants; th dh kh sh gh represent single Arabic sounds. Doubled consonants are held longer.

The transliteration retains grammatical endings and the written form al. In connected recitation, initial helping vowels often disappear and al assimilates before sun letters. At a full pause, final short case vowels are normally dropped. A separating hyphen, as in tudrik-hu, keeps adjacent consonants distinct.

God translates Allāh. “Muhammad and his family” renders Muḥammad wa-ālihi. The first-person prayers remain in the voice of the person praying.

Al-duʿāʾu 37

Prayer 37

فِي الِاعْتِرَافِ بِالتَّقْصِيرِ عَنْ تَأْدِيَةِ الشُّكْرِ

Fī al-iʿtirāfi bi-al-taqṣīri ʿan taʾdiyati al-shukri

Acknowledging the inability to give thanks as God deserves

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ أَحَدًا لَا يَبْلُغُ مِنْ شُكْرِكَ غَايَةً

Allāhumma inna aḥadan lā yablughu min shukrika ghāyatan

O God, no one reaches any degree of gratitude to You

إِلَّا حَصَلَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ إِحْسَانِكَ مَا يُلْزِمُهُ شُكْرًا،

Illā ḥaṣala ʿalayhi min iḥsānika mā yulzimuhu shukran,

without receiving goodness from You that calls for further thanks.

وَلَا يَبْلُغُ مَبْلَغًا مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ وَإِنِ اجْتَهَدَ

Walā yablughu mablaghan min ṭāʿatika wa-ini ijtahada

No one reaches any degree of obedience to You, however hard he strives,

إِلَّا كَانَ مُقَصِّرًا دُونَ اسْتِحْقَاقِكَ بِفَضْلِكَ،

Illā kāna muqaṣṣiran dūna istiḥqāqika bifaḍlika,

without falling short of what Your bounty deserves.

فَأَشْكَرُ عِبَادِكَ عَاجِزٌ عَنْ شُكْرِكَ

Fa-ashkaru ʿibādika ʿājizun ʿan shukrika

Even Your most grateful servant cannot thank You fully,

وَأَعْبَدُهُمْ مُقَصِّرٌ عَنْ طَاعَتِكَ،

Wa-aʿbaduhum muqaṣṣirun ʿan ṭāʿatika,

and Your most devoted worshipper falls short in obeying You.

لَا يَجِبُ لِأَحَدٍ أَنْ تَغْفِرَ لَهُ بِاسْتِحْقَاقِهِ،

Lā yajibu liʾaḥadin an taghfira lahu bistiḥqāqihi,

No one has a claim upon Your forgiveness through his own merit,

وَلَا أَنْ تَرْضَى عَنْهُ بِاسْتِيجَابِهِ،

Walā an tarḍā ʿanhu bistījābihi,

or a right to Your pleasure because he has earned it.

فَمَنْ غَفَرْتَ لَهُ فَبِطَوْلِكَ،

Faman ghafarta lahu fabiṭawlika,

Whoever You forgive, You forgive through Your bounty;

وَمَنْ رَضِيتَ عَنْهُ فَبِفَضْلِكَ.

Waman raḍīta ʿanhu fabifaḍlika.

whoever You are pleased with, You favour through Your grace.

تَشْكُرُ يَسِيرَ مَا شُكِرْتَهُ

Tashkuru yasīra mā shukirtahu

You appreciate the smallest thanks offered to You

وَتُثِيبُ عَلَى قَلِيلِ مَا تُطَاعُ فِيهِ

Watuthību ʿalā qalīli mā tuṭāʿu fīhi

and reward even a little obedience,

حَتَّى كَأَنَّ شُكْرَ عِبَادِكَ

Ḥattā kaʾanna shukra ʿibādika

as though Your servants' gratitude,

الَّذِي أَوْجَبْتَ عَلَيْهِ ثَوَابَهُمْ

Alladhī awjabta ʿalayhi thawābahum

for which You have promised them a reward

وَأَعْظَمْتَ عَنْهُ جَزَاءَهُمْ

Wa-aʿẓamta ʿanhu jazāʾahum

and made their recompense so great,

أَمْرٌ مَلَكُوا اسْتِطَاعَةَ الِامْتِنَاعِ مِنْهُ دُونَكَ

Amrun malakū istiṭāʿata al-imtināʿi minhu dūnaka

were something they could withhold independently of You,

فَكَافَيْتَهُمْ

Fakāfaytahum

and so You repaid them;

أَوْ لَمْ يَكُنْ سَبَبُهُ بِيَدِكَ فَجَازَيْتَهُمْ،

Aw lam yakun sababuhu biyadika fajāzaytahum,

or as though its very cause were not in Your hands, and so You rewarded them.

بَلْ مَلَكْتَ يَا إِلَٰهِي أَمْرَهُمْ

Bal malakta yā ilāhī amrahum

Yet You, my God, held their affairs in Your hands

قَبْلَ أَنْ يَمْلِكُوا عِبَادَتَكَ،

Qabla an yamlikū ʿibādataka,

before they had the power to worship You.

وَأَعْدَدْتَ ثَوَابَهُمْ

Wa-aʿdadta thawābahum

You prepared their reward

قَبْلَ أَنْ يُفِيضُوا فِي طَاعَتِكَ،

Qabla an yufīḍū fī ṭāʿatika,

before they devoted themselves to obeying You.

وَذَٰلِكَ أَنَّ سُنَّتَكَ الْإِفْضَالُ،

Wa-dhālika anna sunnataka al-ifḍālu,

For generosity is Your way,

وَعَادَتَكَ الْإِحْسَانُ،

Waʿādataka al-iḥsānu,

goodness Your constant practice,

وَسَبِيلَكَ الْعَفْوُ.

Wasabīlaka al-ʿafwu.

and pardon the path You take.

فَكُلُّ الْبَرِيَّةِ مُعْتَرِفَةٌ

Fakullu al-bariyyati muʿtarifatun

All creation therefore acknowledges

بِأَنَّكَ غَيْرُ ظَالِمٍ لِمَنْ عَاقَبْتَ،

Biʾannaka ghayru ẓālimin liman ʿāqabta,

that You do no wrong to anyone You punish,

وَشَاهِدَةٌ بِأَنَّكَ مُتَفَضِّلٌ عَلَى مَنْ عَافَيْتَ،

Washāhidatun biʾannaka mutafaḍḍilun ʿalā man ʿāfayta,

and bears witness to Your grace towards anyone You spare.

وَكُلٌّ مُقِرٌّ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ بِالتَّقْصِيرِ

Wakullun muqirrun ʿalā nafsihi bi-al-taqṣīri

Everyone admits his own failure

عَمَّا اسْتَوْجَبْتَ،

ʿammā istawjabta,

to fulfil what is due to You.

فَلَوْلَا أَنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَخْتَدِعُهُمْ عَنْ طَاعَتِكَ

Falawlā anna al-shayṭāna yakhtadiʿuhum ʿan ṭāʿatika

Had Satan not deceived them away from obedience to You,

مَا عَصَاكَ عَاصٍ،

Mā ʿaṣāka ʿāṣin,

no disobedient person would have defied You.

وَلَوْلَا أَنَّهُ صَوَّرَ لَهُمُ الْبَاطِلَ فِي مِثَالِ الْحَقِّ

Walawlā annahu ṣawwara lahumu al-bāṭila fī mithāli al-ḥaqqi

Had he not presented falsehood to them in the image of truth,

مَا ضَلَّ عَنْ طَرِيقِكَ ضَالٌّ.

Mā ḍalla ʿan ṭarīqika ḍāllun.

no one who strayed would have left Your path.

فَسُبْحَانَكَ

Fasubḥānaka

Glory to You!

مَا أَبْيَنَ كَرَمَكَ فِي مُعَامَلَةِ مَنْ أَطَاعَكَ أَوْ عَصَاكَ،

Mā abyana karamaka fī muʿāmalati man aṭāʿaka aw ʿaṣāka,

How clear is Your generosity towards those who obey You or defy You!

تَشْكُرُ لِلْمُطِيعِ مَا أَنْتَ تَوَلَّيْتَهُ لَهُ،

Tashkuru li-l-muṭīʿi mā anta tawallaytahu lahu,

You thank the obedient person for what You Yourself have enabled,

وَتُمْلِي لِلْعَاصِي

Watumlī li-l-ʿāṣī

and give the disobedient person time,

فِيمَا تَمْلِكُ مُعَاجَلَتَهُ فِيهِ،

Fīmā tamliku muʿājalatahu fīhi,

though You have the power to punish him at once.

أَعْطَيْتَ كُلًّا مِنْهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَجِبْ لَهُ،

Aʿṭayta kullan minhumā mā lam yajib lahu,

You give each what he has no right to claim,

وَتَفَضَّلْتَ عَلَى كُلٍّ مِنْهُمَا بِمَا يَقْصُرُ عَمَلُهُ عَنْهُ.

Watafaḍḍalta ʿalā kullin minhumā bimā yaqṣuru ʿamaluhu ʿanhu.

and favour each with what his deeds fall short of deserving.

وَلَوْ كَافَأْتَ الْمُطِيعَ عَلَى مَا أَنْتَ تَوَلَّيْتَهُ

Walaw kāfaʾta al-muṭīʿa ʿalā mā anta tawallaytahu

If You balanced the obedient person's reward against what You have provided,

لَأَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَفْقِدَ ثَوَابَكَ،

Laʾawshaka an yafqida thawābaka,

he would be close to losing Your reward

وَأَنْ تَزُولَ عَنْهُ نِعْمَتُكَ.

Wa-an tazūla ʿanhu niʿmatuka.

and seeing Your blessing leave him.

وَلَٰكِنَّكَ بِكَرَمِكَ جَازَيْتَهُ

Wa-lākinnaka bikaramika jāzaytahu

Yet in Your generosity You reward him

عَلَى الْمُدَّةِ الْقَصِيرَةِ الْفَانِيَةِ

ʿalā al-muddati al-qaṣīrati al-fāniyati

for a short and passing span

بِالْمُدَّةِ الطَّوِيلَةِ الْخَالِدَةِ،

Bi-al-muddati al-ṭawīlati al-khālidati,

with a long and everlasting life,

وَعَلَى الْغَايَةِ الْقَرِيبَةِ الزَّائِلَةِ

Waʿalā al-ghāyati al-qarībati al-zāʾilati

and for a near and vanishing limit

بِالْغَايَةِ الْمَدِيدَةِ الْبَاقِيَةِ.

Bi-al-ghāyati al-madīdati al-bāqiyati.

with an enduring reach that stretches far beyond it.

ثُمَّ لَمْ تَسُمْهُ الْقِصَاصَ

Thumma lam tasumhu al-qiṣāṣa

Then You do not demand repayment from him

فِيمَا أَكَلَ مِنْ رِزْقِكَ

Fīmā akala min rizqika

for the sustenance of Yours that he has eaten,

الَّذِي يَقْوَى بِهِ عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ،

Alladhī yaqwā bihi ʿalā ṭāʿatika,

through which he finds the strength to obey You.

وَلَمْ تَحْمِلْهُ عَلَى الْمُنَاقَشَاتِ فِي الْآلَاتِ

Walam taḥmilhu ʿalā al-munāqashāti fī al-ālāti

Nor do You subject him to an exact accounting for the faculties

الَّتِي تَسَبَّبَ بِاسْتِعْمَالِهَا إِلَى مَغْفِرَتِكَ.

Allatī tasabbaba bistiʿmālihā ilā maghfiratika.

he has used as a means to Your forgiveness.

وَلَوْ فَعَلْتَ ذَٰلِكَ بِهِ

Walaw faʿalta dhālika bihi

Had You done so,

لَذَهَبَ بِجَمِيعِ مَا كَدَحَ لَهُ

Ladhahaba bijamīʿi mā kadaḥa lahu

it would have consumed everything he had laboured for

وَجُمْلَةِ مَا سَعَى فِيهِ،

Wajumlati mā saʿā fīhi,

and all that he had striven to achieve,

جَزَاءً لِلصُّغْرَى مِنْ أَيَادِيكَ وَمِنَنِكَ،

Jazāʾan li-l-ṣughrā min ayādīka waminanika,

in repayment for the smallest of Your favours and gifts.

وَلَبَقِيَ رَهِينًا بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ بِسَائِرِ نِعَمِكَ.

Walabaqiya rahīnan bayna yadayka bisāʾiri niʿamika.

He would still remain before You, in debt for all Your other blessings.

فَمَتَى كَانَ يَسْتَحِقُّ شَيْئًا مِنْ ثَوَابِكَ،

Famatā kāna yastaḥiqqu shayʾan min thawābika,

When, then, could he deserve any of Your reward?

لَا، مَتَى؟

Lā, matā?

No! When could he?

هَٰذَا يَا إِلَٰهِي حَالُ مَنْ أَطَاعَكَ

Hādhā yā ilāhī ḥālu man aṭāʿaka

This, my God, is the condition of the person who obeys You,

وَسَبِيلُ مَنْ تَعَبَّدَ لَكَ.

Wasabīlu man taʿabbada laka.

and the course of the one who worships You.

فَأَمَّا الْعَاصِي أَمْرَكَ وَالْمُوَاقِعُ نَهْيَكَ

Fa-ammā al-ʿāṣī amraka wa-al-muwāqiʿu nahyaka

As for the person who defies Your command and does what You forbid,

فَلَمْ تُعَاجِلْهُ بِنَقِمَتِكَ

Falam tuʿājilhu binaqimatika

You do not hasten to punish him,

لِكَيْ يَسْتَبْدِلَ بِحَالِهِ فِي مَعْصِيَتِكَ

Likay yastabdila biḥālihi fī maʿṣiyatika

so that he may exchange his state of disobedience

حَالَ الْإِنَابَةِ إِلَى طَاعَتِكَ.

Ḥāla al-inābati ilā ṭāʿatika.

for a return to obedience to You.

وَلَقَدْ كَانَ يَسْتَحِقُّ فِي أَوَّلِ مَا هَمَّ بِعِصْيَانِكَ

Walaqad kāna yastaḥiqqu fī awwali mā hamma biʿiṣyānika

Yet from the moment he first intended to defy You, he deserved

كُلَّ مَا أَعْدَدْتَ لِجَمِيعِ خَلْقِكَ مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ،

Kulla mā aʿdadta lijamīʿi khalqika min ʿuqūbatika,

every punishment You had prepared for all Your creation.

فَجَمِيعُ مَا أَخَّرْتَ عَنْهُ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ،

Fajamīʿu mā akhkharta ʿanhu mina al-ʿadhābi,

Every torment You have delayed for him,

وَأَبْطَأْتَ بِهِ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ سَطَوَاتِ النَّقِمَةِ وَالْعِقَابِ

Wa-abṭaʾta bihi ʿalayhi min saṭawāti al-naqimati wa-al-ʿiqābi

every stroke of retribution and punishment You have held back,

تَرْكٌ مِنْ حَقِّكَ،

Tarkun min ḥaqqika,

is a relinquishing of Your right

وَرِضًى بِدُونِ وَاجِبِكَ.

Wariḍan bidūni wājibika.

and an acceptance of less than what is due to You.

فَمَنْ أَكْرَمُ يَا إِلَٰهِي مِنْكَ

Faman akramu yā ilāhī minka

Who, my God, is more generous than You?

وَمَنْ أَشْقَى مِمَّنْ هَلَكَ عَلَيْكَ،

Waman ashqā mimman halaka ʿalayka,

Who is more wretched than one who perishes despite You?

لَا، مَنْ؟

Lā, man?

No! Who could be?

فَتَبَارَكْتَ أَنْ تُوصَفَ إِلَّا بِالْإِحْسَانِ،

Fatabārakta an tūṣafa illā bi-al-iḥsāni,

Blessed are You, beyond all description except in terms of goodness;

وَكَرُمْتَ أَنْ يُخَافَ مِنْكَ إِلَّا الْعَدْلُ.

Wakarumta an yukhāfa minka illā al-ʿadlu.

so noble that nothing need be feared from You except justice.

لَا يُخْشَى جَوْرُكَ عَلَى مَنْ عَصَاكَ،

Lā yukhshā jawruka ʿalā man ʿaṣāka,

No injustice from You is feared for anyone who defies You,

وَلَا يُخَافُ إِغْفَالُكَ ثَوَابَ مَنْ أَرْضَاكَ.

Walā yukhāfu ighfāluka thawāba man arḍāka.

nor is it feared that You will overlook the reward of anyone who pleases You.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَهَبْ لِي أَمَلِي،

Wahab lī amalī,

grant me what I hope for,

وَزِدْنِي مِنْ هُدَاكَ

Wazidnī min hudāka

and give me more of Your guidance,

مَا أَصِلُ بِهِ إِلَى التَّوْفِيقِ فِي عَمَلِي،

Mā aṣilu bihi ilā al-tawfīqi fī ʿamalī,

through which my deeds may be set right.

إِنَّكَ مَنَّانٌ كَرِيمٌ.

Innaka mannānun karīmun.

You are the Giver of blessings, generous and noble.

الدُّعَاءُ ٣٨

Al-duʿāʾu 38

Prayer 38

فِي الِاعْتِذَارِ مِنْ تَبِعَاتِ الْعِبَادِ

Fī al-iʿtidhāri min tabiʿāti al-ʿibādi

Seeking pardon for liabilities towards others

وَمِنَ التَّقْصِيرِ فِي حُقُوقِهِمْ

Wamina al-taqṣīri fī ḥuqūqihim

and for falling short of their rights

وَفِي فَكَاكِ رَقَبَتِهِ مِنَ النَّارِ

Wafī fakāki raqabatihi mina al-nāri

and seeking release from the Fire

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكَ

Allāhumma innī aʿtadhiru ilayka

O God, I ask Your pardon

مِنْ مَظْلُومٍ ظُلِمَ بِحَضْرَتِي فَلَمْ أَنْصُرْهُ،

Min maẓlūmin ẓulima biḥaḍratī falam anṣurhu,

for someone wronged in my presence whom I did not support;

وَمِنْ مَعْرُوفٍ أُسْدِيَ إِلَيَّ فَلَمْ أَشْكُرْهُ،

Wamin maʿrūfin usdiya ilayya falam ashkurhu,

for a kindness shown to me for which I gave no thanks;

وَمِنْ مُسِيءٍ اعْتَذَرَ إِلَيَّ فَلَمْ أَعْذِرْهُ،

Wamin musīʾin iʿtadhara ilayya falam aʿdhirhu,

for a wrongdoer who apologised to me whom I did not pardon;

وَمِنْ ذِي فَاقَةٍ سَأَلَنِي فَلَمْ أُوثِرْهُ،

Wamin dhī fāqatin saʾalanī falam ūthirhu,

for a person in need who asked of me whom I did not put before myself;

وَمِنْ حَقِّ ذِي حَقٍّ لَزِمَنِي لِمُؤْمِنٍ فَلَمْ أُوَفِّرْهُ،

Wamin ḥaqqi dhī ḥaqqin lazimanī limuʾminin falam uwaffirhu,

for a right I owed a believer which I did not fulfil;

وَمِنْ عَيْبِ مُؤْمِنٍ ظَهَرَ لِي فَلَمْ أَسْتُرْهُ،

Wamin ʿaybi muʾminin ẓahara lī falam asturhu,

for a believer's fault made known to me which I did not conceal;

وَمِنْ كُلِّ إِثْمٍ عَرَضَ لِي فَلَمْ أَهْجُرْهُ.

Wamin kulli ithmin ʿaraḍa lī falam ahjurhu.

and for every sin that came before me which I did not leave behind.

أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي مِنْهُنَّ وَمِنْ نَظَائِرِهِنَّ

Aʿtadhiru ilayka yā ilāhī minhunna wamin naẓāʾirihinna

I ask Your pardon, my God, for these things and others like them,

اعْتِذَارَ نَدَامَةٍ

Iʿtidhāra nadāmatin

with the apology of one who feels remorse,

يَكُونُ وَاعِظًا لِمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ مِنْ أَشْبَاهِهِنَّ.

Yakūnu wāʿiẓan limā bayna yadayya min ashbāhihinna.

so that it may warn me when similar things lie ahead.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاجْعَلْ نَدَامَتِي عَلَى مَا وَقَعْتُ فِيهِ مِنَ الزَّلَّاتِ

Wa-ijʿal nadāmatī ʿalā mā waqaʿtu fīhi mina al-zallāti

and let my remorse for the failings into which I have fallen,

وَعَزْمِي عَلَى تَرْكِ مَا يَعْرِضُ لِي مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ

Waʿazmī ʿalā tarki mā yaʿriḍu lī mina al-sayyiʾāti

and my resolve to leave the wrongs that come before me,

تَوْبَةً تُوجِبُ لِي مَحَبَّتَكَ

Tawbatan tūjibu lī maḥabbataka

become a repentance that brings me Your love,

يَا مُحِبَّ التَّوَّابِينَ.

Yā muḥibba al-tawwābīna.

O Lover of those who turn back to You.

الدُّعَاءُ ٣٩

Al-duʿāʾu 39

Prayer 39

فِي طَلَبِ الْعَفْوِ وَالرَّحْمَةِ

Fī ṭalabi al-ʿafwi wa-al-raḥmati

Seeking pardon and mercy

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاكْسِرْ شَهْوَتِي عَنْ كُلِّ مَحْرَمٍ،

Wa-iksir shahwatī ʿan kulli maḥramin,

Break my desire for everything forbidden,

وَازْوِ حِرْصِي عَنْ كُلِّ مَأْثَمٍ،

Wa-izwi ḥirṣī ʿan kulli maʾthamin,

turn my craving away from every sin,

وَامْنَعْنِي عَنْ أَذَى كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ وَمُؤْمِنَةٍ

Wa-imnaʿnī ʿan adhā kulli muʾminin wamuʾminatin

and keep me from harming any believing man or woman,

وَمُسْلِمٍ وَمُسْلِمَةٍ.

Wamuslimin wamuslimatin.

any Muslim man or woman.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَيُّمَا عَبْدٍ نَالَ مِنِّي مَا حَظَرْتَ عَلَيْهِ،

Allāhumma wa-ayyumā ʿabdin nāla minnī mā ḥaẓarta ʿalayhi,

O God, any servant who has wronged me in a way You forbade him,

وَانْتَهَكَ مِنِّي مَا حَجَرْتَ عَلَيْهِ،

Wa-intahaka minnī mā ḥajarta ʿalayhi,

or violated something of mine that You made inviolable,

فَمَضَى بِظُلَامَتِي مَيِّتًا،

Famaḍā biẓulāmatī mayyitan,

and then died with that wrong against me still upon him,

أَوْ حَصَلَتْ لِي قِبَلَهُ حَيًّا،

Aw ḥaṣalat lī qibalahu ḥayyan,

or remains alive owing me redress:

فَاغْفِرْ لَهُ مَا أَلَمَّ بِهِ مِنِّي،

Fa-ighfir lahu mā alamma bihi minnī,

forgive him for the harm he has done me,

وَاعْفُ لَهُ عَمَّا أَدْبَرَ بِهِ عَنِّي،

Wa-uʿfu lahu ʿammā adbara bihi ʿannī,

and pardon the wrong he carried away from me.

وَلَا تَقِفْهُ عَلَى مَا ارْتَكَبَ فِيَّ،

Walā taqifhu ʿalā mā irtakaba fiyya,

Do not call him to account for what he committed against me,

وَلَا تَكْشِفْهُ عَمَّا اكْتَسَبَ بِي،

Walā takshifhu ʿammā iktasaba bī,

or expose him for what he did to me.

وَاجْعَلْ مَا سَمَحْتُ بِهِ مِنَ الْعَفْوِ عَنْهُمْ

Wa-ijʿal mā samaḥtu bihi mina al-ʿafwi ʿanhum

Let the pardon I freely grant them,

وَتَبَرَّعْتُ بِهِ مِنَ الصَّدَقَةِ عَلَيْهِمْ

Watabarraʿtu bihi mina al-ṣadaqati ʿalayhim

and the charity I willingly offer them,

أَزْكَى صَدَقَاتِ الْمُتَصَدِّقِينَ

Azkā ṣadaqāti al-mutaṣaddiqīna

be the purest charity given by those who give

وَأَعْلَى صِلَاتِ الْمُتَقَرِّبِينَ،

Wa-aʿlā ṣilāti al-mutaqarribīna,

and the highest offering made by those who seek Your nearness.

وَعَوِّضْنِي مِنْ عَفْوِي عَنْهُمْ عَفْوَكَ

Waʿawwiḍnī min ʿafwī ʿanhum ʿafwaka

In return for my pardon of them, give me Your pardon;

وَمِنْ دُعَائِي لَهُمْ رَحْمَتَكَ

Wamin duʿāʾī lahum raḥmataka

in return for my prayer for them, give me Your mercy,

حَتَّى يَسْعَدَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنَّا بِفَضْلِكَ

Ḥattā yasʿada kullu wāḥidin minnā bifaḍlika

so that each of us may find happiness through Your grace

وَيَنْجُوَ كُلٌّ مِنَّا بِمَنِّكَ.

Wayanjuwa kullun minnā bimannika.

and each of us may be saved through Your bounty.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَيُّمَا عَبْدٍ مِنْ عَبِيدِكَ أَدْرَكَهُ مِنِّي دَرَكٌ

Allāhumma wa-ayyumā ʿabdin min ʿabīdika adrakahu minnī darakun

O God, any servant of Yours whom some injury from me has reached,

أَوْ مَسَّهُ مِنْ نَاحِيَتِي أَذًى،

Aw massahu min nāḥiyatī adhan,

whom some harm from me has touched,

أَوْ لَحِقَهُ بِي أَوْ بِسَبَبِي ظُلْمٌ

Aw laḥiqahu bī aw bisababī ẓulmun

or who has suffered injustice through me or because of me,

فَفُتُّهُ بِحَقِّهِ،

Fafuttuhu biḥaqqihi,

and whose right I have escaped fulfilling,

أَوْ سَبَقْتُهُ بِمَظْلَمَتِهِ،

Aw sabaqtuhu bimaẓlamatihi,

or whose claim for redress I have left behind:

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَرْضِهِ عَنِّي مِنْ وُجْدِكَ،

Wa-arḍihi ʿannī min wujdika,

satisfy him on my behalf out of Your abundance,

وَأَوْفِهِ حَقَّهُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ،

Wa-awfihi ḥaqqahu min ʿindika,

and fulfil his right from what is Yours.

ثُمَّ قِنِي مَا يُوجِبُ لَهُ حُكْمُكَ،

Thumma qinī mā yūjibu lahu ḥukmuka,

Then spare me what Your judgement would award him against me,

وَخَلِّصْنِي مِمَّا يَحْكُمُ بِهِ عَدْلُكَ،

Wakhalliṣnī mimmā yaḥkumu bihi ʿadluka,

and release me from what Your justice would decree.

فَإِنَّ قُوَّتِي لَا تَسْتَقِلُّ بِنَقِمَتِكَ،

Fa-inna quwwatī lā tastaqillu binaqimatika,

My strength cannot bear Your retribution,

وَإِنَّ طَاقَتِي لَا تَنْهَضُ بِسُخْطِكَ،

Wa-inna ṭāqatī lā tanhaḍu bisukhṭika,

and my endurance cannot withstand Your anger.

فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ تُكَافِنِي بِالْحَقِّ تُهْلِكْنِي،

Fa-innaka in tukāfinī bi-al-ḥaqqi tuhliknī,

If You repay me with strict justice, You will bring me to ruin;

وَإِلَّا تَغَمَّدْنِي بِرَحْمَتِكَ تُوبِقْنِي.

Wa-illā taghammadnī biraḥmatika tūbiqnī.

if You do not enfold me in Your mercy, You will destroy me.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَوْهِبُكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي

Allāhumma innī astawhibuka yā ilāhī

O God, my God, I ask You to give me

مَا لَا يَنْقُصُكَ بَذْلُهُ،

Mā lā yanquṣuka badhluhu,

what does not diminish You to give.

وَأَسْتَحْمِلُكَ مَا لَا يَبْهَظُكَ حَمْلُهُ،

Wa-astaḥmiluka mā lā yabhaẓuka ḥamluhu,

I ask You to carry what is no burden for You to bear.

أَسْتَوْهِبُكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي نَفْسِيَ

Astawhibuka yā ilāhī nafsiya

I ask You, my God, to grant me my own soul,

الَّتِي لَمْ تَخْلُقْهَا لِتَمْتَنِعَ بِهَا مِنْ سُوءٍ،

Allatī lam takhluqhā litamtaniʿa bihā min sūʾin,

which You did not create to protect Yourself from harm

أَوْ لِتَطَرَّقَ بِهَا إِلَى نَفْعٍ،

Aw litaṭarraqa bihā ilā nafʿin,

or to gain some benefit through it.

وَلَٰكِنْ أَنْشَأْتَهَا إِثْبَاتًا لِقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَى مِثْلِهَا،

Wa-lākin anshaʾtahā ithbātan liqudratika ʿalā mithlihā,

You brought it into being to show Your power to create its like,

وَاحْتِجَاجًا بِهَا عَلَى شَكْلِهَا.

Wa-iḥtijājan bihā ʿalā shaklihā.

and to make it a proof for others like it.

وَأَسْتَحْمِلُكَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي

Wa-astaḥmiluka min dhunūbī

I ask You to carry those sins of mine

مَا قَدْ بَهَظَنِي حَمْلُهُ،

Mā qad bahaẓanī ḥamluhu,

whose burden has weighed me down.

وَأَسْتَعِينُ بِكَ عَلَى مَا قَدْ فَدَحَنِي ثِقْلُهُ.

Wa-astaʿīnu bika ʿalā mā qad fadaḥanī thiqluhu.

I seek Your help with what has crushed me beneath its weight.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَهَبْ لِنَفْسِي عَلَى ظُلْمِهَا نَفْسِي،

Wahab linafsī ʿalā ẓulmihā nafsī,

and, despite my soul's wrongdoing, grant my soul back to me.

وَوَكِّلْ رَحْمَتَكَ بِاحْتِمَالِ إِصْرِي،

Wawakkil raḥmataka biḥtimāli iṣrī,

Entrust the bearing of my burden to Your mercy.

فَكَمْ قَدْ لَحِقَتْ رَحْمَتُكَ بِالْمُسِيئِينَ،

Fakam qad laḥiqat raḥmatuka bi-al-musīʾīna,

How often Your mercy has reached those who do wrong!

وَكَمْ قَدْ شَمِلَ عَفْوُكَ الظَّالِمِينَ.

Wakam qad shamila ʿafwuka al-ẓālimīna.

How often Your pardon has embraced the unjust!

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاجْعَلْنِي أُسْوَةَ مَنْ قَدْ أَنْهَضْتَهُ بِتَجَاوُزِكَ

Wa-ijʿalnī uswata man qad anhaḍtahu bitajāwuzika

and make me like one whom Your forgiveness has raised

عَنْ مَصَارِعِ الْخَاطِئِينَ،

ʿan maṣāriʿi al-khāṭiʾīna,

from the places where sinners fall,

وَخَلَّصْتَهُ بِتَوْفِيقِكَ مِنْ وَرَطَاتِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ،

Wakhallaṣtahu bitawfīqika min waraṭāti al-mujrimīna,

whom Your enabling grace has freed from the predicaments of wrongdoers.

فَأَصْبَحَ طَلِيقَ عَفْوِكَ مِنْ إِسَارِ سُخْطِكَ،

Fa-aṣbaḥa ṭalīqa ʿafwika min isāri sukhṭika,

Your pardon has released him from the captivity of Your anger,

وَعَتِيقَ صُنْعِكَ مِنْ وَثَاقِ عَدْلِكَ.

Waʿatīqa ṣunʿika min wathāqi ʿadlika.

and Your kindness has freed him from the bonds of Your justice.

إِنَّكَ إِنْ تَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي

Innaka in tafʿal dhālika yā ilāhī

If You do this, my God,

تَفْعَلْهُ بِمَنْ لَا يَجْحَدُ اسْتِحْقَاقَ عُقُوبَتِكَ،

Tafʿalhu biman lā yajḥadu istiḥqāqa ʿuqūbatika,

You do it for one who does not deny that he deserves Your punishment,

وَلَا يُبَرِّئُ نَفْسَهُ مِنِ اسْتِيجَابِ نَقِمَتِكَ.

Walā yubarriʾu nafsahu mini istījābi naqimatika.

nor absolve himself of having incurred Your retribution.

تَفْعَلُ ذَٰلِكَ يَا إِلَٰهِي

Tafʿalu dhālika yā ilāhī

You do this, my God,

بِمَنْ خَوْفُهُ مِنْكَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ طَمَعِهِ فِيكَ،

Biman khawfuhu minka aktharu min ṭamaʿihi fīka,

for one whose fear of You exceeds his hope in You,

وَبِمَنْ يَأْسُهُ مِنَ النَّجَاةِ أَوْكَدُ مِنْ رَجَائِهِ لِلْخَلَاصِ،

Wabiman yaʾsuhu mina al-najāti awkadu min rajāʾihi li-l-khalāṣi,

whose doubt of being saved is stronger than his hope of release.

لَا أَنْ يَكُونَ يَأْسُهُ قُنُوطًا

Lā an yakūna yaʾsuhu qunūṭan

This doubt is not despair of Your mercy,

أَوْ أَنْ يَكُونَ طَمَعُهُ اغْتِرَارًا

Aw an yakūna ṭamaʿuhu ightirāran

nor is his hope a delusion,

بَلْ لِقِلَّةِ حَسَنَاتِهِ بَيْنَ سَيِّئَاتِهِ،

Bal liqillati ḥasanātihi bayna sayyiʾātihi,

but his good deeds are so few among his misdeeds,

وَضَعْفِ حُجَجِهِ فِي جَمِيعِ تَبِعَاتِهِ.

Waḍaʿfi ḥujajihi fī jamīʿi tabiʿātihi.

and his pleas are so weak against all his liabilities.

فَأَمَّا أَنْتَ يَا إِلَٰهِي

Fa-ammā anta yā ilāhī

As for You, my God,

فَأَهْلٌ أَنْ لَا يَغْتَرَّ بِكَ الصِّدِّيقُونَ،

Fa-ahlun an lā yaghtarra bika al-ṣiddīqūna,

even the utterly truthful must never presume upon You,

وَلَا يَيْأَسَ مِنْكَ الْمُجْرِمُونَ،

Walā yayʾasa minka al-mujrimūna,

nor must wrongdoers despair of You.

لِأَنَّكَ الرَّبُّ الْعَظِيمُ

Liʾannaka al-rabbu al-ʿaẓīmu

For You are the mighty Lord

الَّذِي لَا يَمْنَعُ أَحَدًا فَضْلَهُ

Alladhī lā yamnaʿu aḥadan faḍlahu

who withholds His bounty from no one

وَلَا يَسْتَقْصِي مِنْ أَحَدٍ حَقَّهُ.

Walā yastaqṣī min aḥadin ḥaqqahu.

and exacts from no one the full measure of His due.

تَعَالَى ذِكْرُكَ عَنِ الْمَذْكُورِينَ،

Taʿālā dhikruka ʿani al-madhkūrīna,

Your name stands high above all who are named;

وَتَقَدَّسَتْ أَسْمَاؤُكَ عَنِ الْمَنْسُوبِينَ،

Wataqaddasat asmāʾuka ʿani al-mansūbīna,

Your names are holy beyond all to whom names are ascribed.

وَفَشَتْ نِعْمَتُكَ فِي جَمِيعِ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ،

Wafashat niʿmatuka fī jamīʿi al-makhlūqīna,

Your blessing spreads throughout all created beings.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى ذَٰلِكَ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Falaka al-ḥamdu ʿalā dhālika yā rabba al-ʿālamīna.

For this, praise belongs to You, Lord of all the worlds.

الدُّعَاءُ ٤٠

Al-duʿāʾu 40

Prayer 40

إِذَا نُعِيَ إِلَيْهِ مَيِّتٌ أَوْ ذَكَرَ الْمَوْتَ

Idhā nuʿiya ilayhi mayyitun aw dhakara al-mawta

When he heard of someone's death or remembered death

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاكْفِنَا طُولَ الْأَمَلِ،

Wa-ikfinā ṭūla al-amali,

Spare us hopes stretched far into the future,

وَقَصِّرْهُ عَنَّا بِصِدْقِ الْعَمَلِ

Waqaṣṣirhu ʿannā biṣidqi al-ʿamali

and shorten them for us through sincere action,

حَتَّى لَا نُؤَمِّلَ اسْتِتْمَامَ سَاعَةٍ بَعْدَ سَاعَةٍ

Ḥattā lā nuʾammila istitmāma sāʿatin baʿda sāʿatin

so that we do not count on completing one hour after another,

وَلَا اسْتِيفَاءَ يَوْمٍ بَعْدَ يَوْمٍ،

Walā istīfāʾa yawmin baʿda yawmin,

or living through one day after another,

وَلَا اتِّصَالَ نَفَسٍ بِنَفَسٍ،

Walā ittiṣāla nafasin binafasin,

or drawing one breath after another,

وَلَا لُحُوقَ قَدَمٍ بِقَدَمٍ.

Walā luḥūqa qadamin biqadamin.

or taking one step after another.

وَسَلِّمْنَا مِنْ غُرُورِهِ،

Wasallimnā min ghurūrihi,

Keep us safe from the delusion of such hope,

وَآمِنَّا مِنْ شُرُورِهِ،

Wa-āminnā min shurūrihi,

and protect us from its harms.

وَانْصِبِ الْمَوْتَ بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا نَصْبًا،

Wa-inṣibi al-mawta bayna aydīnā naṣban,

Set death plainly before us,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ ذِكْرَنَا لَهُ غِبًّا،

Walā tajʿal dhikranā lahu ghibban,

and let us remember it more than occasionally.

وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا مِنْ صَالِحِ الْأَعْمَالِ عَمَلًا

Wa-ijʿal lanā min ṣāliḥi al-aʿmāli ʿamalan

Give us, among righteous deeds, a deed

نَسْتَبْطِئُ مَعَهُ الْمَصِيرَ إِلَيْكَ،

Nastabṭiʾu maʿahu al-maṣīra ilayka,

through which our return to You seems slow in coming,

وَنَحْرِصُ لَهُ عَلَى وَشْكِ اللِّحَاقِ بِكَ

Wanaḥriṣu lahu ʿalā washki al-liḥāqi bika

and for which we long to join You soon,

حَتَّى يَكُونَ الْمَوْتُ مَأْنَسَنَا الَّذِي نَأْنَسُ بِهِ،

Ḥattā yakūna al-mawtu maʾnasanā alladhī naʾnasu bihi,

so that death becomes a companion in whom we find comfort,

وَمَأْلَفَنَا الَّذِي نَشْتَاقُ إِلَيْهِ،

Wamaʾlafanā alladhī nashtāqu ilayhi,

a familiar presence for which we yearn,

وَحَامَّتَنَا الَّتِي نُحِبُّ الدُّنُوَّ مِنْهَا.

Waḥāmmatanā allatī nuḥibbu al-dunuwwa minhā.

and a close relation we love to approach.

فَإِذَا أَوْرَدْتَهُ عَلَيْنَا،

Fa-idhā awradtahu ʿalaynā,

When You bring it to us

وَأَنْزَلْتَهُ بِنَا

Wa-anzaltahu binā

and make it descend upon us,

فَأَسْعِدْنَا بِهِ زَائِرًا،

Fa-asʿidnā bihi zāʾiran,

let its visit bring us happiness,

وَآنِسْنَا بِهِ قَادِمًا،

Wa-ānisnā bihi qādiman,

and its arrival bring us comfort.

وَلَا تُشْقِنَا بِضِيَافَتِهِ،

Walā tushqinā biḍiyāfatihi,

Do not let receiving it as a guest make us wretched,

وَلَا تُخْزِنَا بِزِيَارَتِهِ،

Walā tukhzinā biziyāratihi,

or let its visit bring us disgrace.

وَاجْعَلْهُ بَابًا مِنْ أَبْوَابِ مَغْفِرَتِكَ،

Wa-ijʿalhu bāban min abwābi maghfiratika,

Make it a gate among the gates of Your forgiveness

وَمِفْتَاحًا مِنْ مَفَاتِيحِ رَحْمَتِكَ.

Wamiftāḥan min mafātīḥi raḥmatika.

and a key among the keys to Your mercy.

أَمِتْنَا مُهْتَدِينَ غَيْرَ ضَالِّينَ

Amitnā muhtadīna ghayra ḍāllīna

Let us die guided, free from error;

طَائِعِينَ غَيْرَ مُسْتَكْرِهِينَ

Ṭāʾiʿīna ghayra mustakrihīna

obedient, free from reluctance;

تَائِبِينَ غَيْرَ عَاصِينَ وَلَا مُصِرِّينَ

Tāʾibīna ghayra ʿāṣīna walā muṣirrīna

repentant, neither defying You nor persisting in sin,

يَا ضَامِنَ جَزَاءِ الْمُحْسِنِينَ،

Yā ḍāmina jazāʾi al-muḥsinīna,

O You who guarantee the reward of those who do good

وَمُسْتَصْلِحَ عَمَلِ الْمُفْسِدِينَ.

Wamustaṣliḥa ʿamali al-mufsidīna.

and set right the deeds of those who cause corruption.

الدُّعَاءُ ٤١

Al-duʿāʾu 41

Prayer 41

فِي طَلَبِ السِّتْرِ وَالْوِقَايَةِ

Fī ṭalabi al-sitri wa-al-wiqāyati

Seeking concealment of faults and protection

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَفْرِشْنِي مِهَادَ كَرَامَتِكَ،

Wa-afrishnī mihāda karāmatika,

Spread out for me the resting place of Your honour,

وَأَوْرِدْنِي مَشَارِعَ رَحْمَتِكَ،

Wa-awridnī mashāriʿa raḥmatika,

bring me to the watering places of Your mercy,

وَأَحْلِلْنِي بُحْبُوحَةَ جَنَّتِكَ،

Wa-aḥlilnī buḥbūḥata jannatika,

and let me dwell in the spacious heart of Your Garden.

وَلَا تَسُمْنِي بِالرَّدِّ عَنْكَ،

Walā tasumnī bi-al-raddi ʿanka,

Do not afflict me by turning me away from You,

وَلَا تَحْرِمْنِي بِالْخَيْبَةِ مِنْكَ،

Walā taḥrimnī bi-al-khaybati minka,

or deprive me by leaving my hope in You disappointed.

وَلَا تُقَاصَّنِي بِمَا اجْتَرَحْتُ،

Walā tuqāṣṣanī bimā ijtaraḥtu,

Do not exact repayment for what I have committed,

وَلَا تُنَاقِشْنِي بِمَا اكْتَسَبْتُ،

Walā tunāqishnī bimā iktasabtu,

or call me to a strict accounting for what I have earned.

وَلَا تُبْرِزْ مَكْتُومِي،

Walā tubriz maktūmī,

Do not bring my concealed faults to light,

وَلَا تَكْشِفْ مَسْتُورِي،

Walā takshif mastūrī,

or uncover what is hidden of me.

وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَى مِيزَانِ الْإِنْصَافِ عَمَلِي،

Walā taḥmil ʿalā mīzāni al-inṣāfi ʿamalī,

Do not place my deeds upon the scales of exact justice,

وَلَا تُعْلِنْ عَلَى عُيُونِ الْمَلَأِ خَبَرِي.

Walā tuʿlin ʿalā ʿuyūni al-malaʾi khabarī.

or make my story public before everyone's eyes.

أَخْفِ عَنْهُمْ مَا يَكُونُ نَشْرُهُ عَلَيَّ عَارًا،

Akhfi ʿanhum mā yakūnu nashruhu ʿalayya ʿāran,

Hide from them what would shame me if it were made known,

وَاطْوِ عَنْهُمْ مَا يُلْحِقُنِي عِنْدَكَ شَنَارًا.

Wa-iṭwi ʿanhum mā yulḥiqunī ʿindaka shanāran.

and keep from them what brings me disgrace before You.

شَرِّفْ دَرَجَتِي بِرِضْوَانِكَ،

Sharrif darajatī biriḍwānika,

Honour my standing through Your pleasure,

وَأَكْمِلْ كَرَامَتِي بِغُفْرَانِكَ،

Wa-akmil karāmatī bighufrānika,

and complete my honour through Your forgiveness.

وَانْظِمْنِي فِي أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ،

Wa-inẓimnī fī aṣḥābi al-yamīni,

Place me among the people of the right hand,

وَوَجِّهْنِي فِي مَسَالِكِ الْآمِنِينَ،

Wawajjihnī fī masāliki al-āminīna,

guide me along the paths of those who are safe,

وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي فَوْجِ الْفَائِزِينَ،

Wa-ijʿalnī fī fawji al-fāʾizīna,

include me in the company of those who attain salvation,

وَاعْمُرْ بِي مَجَالِسَ الصَّالِحِينَ،

Wa-uʿmur bī majālisa al-ṣāliḥīna,

and let me take my place in the gatherings of the righteous.

آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Āmīna rabba al-ʿālamīna.

Amen, Lord of all the worlds.

Prayer 42

عِنْدَ خَتْمِهِ الْقُرْآنَ

ʿinda khatmihi al-qurʾāna

Upon completing the recitation of the Qur’an

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَعَنْتَنِي عَلَى خَتْمِ كِتَابِكَ

Allāhumma innaka aʿantanī ʿalā khatmi kitābika

O God, You have helped me complete the recitation of Your Book,

الَّذِي أَنْزَلْتَهُ نُورًا

Alladhī anzaltahu nūran

which You sent down as a light

وَجَعَلْتَهُ مُهَيْمِنًا عَلَى كُلِّ كِتَابٍ أَنْزَلْتَهُ،

Wajaʿaltahu muhayminan ʿalā kulli kitābin anzaltahu,

and made a guardian over every Book You revealed.

وَفَضَّلْتَهُ عَلَى كُلِّ حَدِيثٍ قَصَصْتَهُ،

Wafaḍḍaltahu ʿalā kulli ḥadīthin qaṣaṣtahu,

You gave it precedence over every account You related,

وَفُرْقَانًا فَرَقْتَ بِهِ بَيْنَ حَلَالِكَ وَحَرَامِكَ،

Wafurqānan faraqta bihi bayna ḥalālika waḥarāmika,

a criterion through which You distinguished the lawful from the unlawful,

وَقُرْآنًا أَعْرَبْتَ بِهِ عَنْ شَرَائِعِ أَحْكَامِكَ،

Waqurʾānan aʿrabta bihi ʿan sharāʾiʿi aḥkāmika,

a recitation through which You made the laws of Your judgements clear,

وَكِتَابًا فَصَّلْتَهُ لِعِبَادِكَ تَفْصِيلًا،

Wakitāban faṣṣaltahu liʿibādika tafṣīlan,

a Book that You explained fully to Your servants,

وَوَحْيًا أَنْزَلْتَهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ

Wawaḥyan anzaltahu ʿalā nabiyyika muḥammadin

a revelation that You sent down upon Your Prophet Muhammad,

صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ تَنْزِيلًا،

Ṣalawātuka ʿalayhi wa-ālihi tanzīlan,

(Your blessings be upon him and his family), truly sent down.

وَجَعَلْتَهُ نُورًا نَهْتَدِي مِنْ ظُلَمِ الضَّلَالَةِ وَالْجَهَالَةِ

Wajaʿaltahu nūran nahtadī min ẓulami al-ḍalālati wa-al-jahālati

You made it a light that guides us out of the darkness of error and ignorance

بِاتِّبَاعِهِ،

Bittibāʿihi,

when we follow it,

وَشِفَاءً لِمَنْ أَنْصَتَ بِفَهَمِ التَّصْدِيقِ إِلَى اسْتِمَاعِهِ،

Washifāʾan liman anṣata bifahami al-taṣdīqi ilā istimāʿihi,

and healing for anyone who listens attentively, understanding and believing.

وَمِيزَانَ قِسْطٍ لَا يَحِيفُ عَنِ الْحَقِّ لِسَانُهُ،

Wamīzāna qisṭin lā yaḥīfu ʿani al-ḥaqqi lisānuhu,

It is a just balance whose pointer never swerves from the truth,

وَنُورَ هُدًى لَا يُطْفَأُ عَنِ الشَّاهِدِينَ بُرْهَانُهُ،

Wanūra hudan lā yuṭfaʾu ʿani al-shāhidīna burhānuhu,

a light of guidance whose proof is never extinguished for those who witness it,

وَعَلَمَ نَجَاةٍ لَا يَضِلُّ مَنْ أَمَّ قَصْدَ سُنَّتِهِ،

Waʿalama najātin lā yaḍillu man amma qaṣda sunnatihi,

a banner of salvation: whoever takes its straight course will not go astray.

وَلَا تَنَالُ أَيْدِي الْهَلَكَاتِ

Walā tanālu aydī al-halakāti

The hands of destruction cannot reach

مَنْ تَعَلَّقَ بِعُرْوَةِ عِصْمَتِهِ.

Man taʿallaqa biʿurwati ʿiṣmatihi.

anyone who holds firmly to its protecting handhold.

اللَّهُمَّ فَإِذْ أَفَدْتَنَا الْمَعُونَةَ عَلَى تِلَاوَتِهِ،

Allāhumma fa-idh afadtanā al-maʿūnata ʿalā tilāwatihi,

O God, since You have given us help in reciting it,

وَسَهَّلْتَ جَوَاسِيَ أَلْسِنَتِنَا بِحُسْنِ عِبَارَتِهِ،

Wasahhalta jawāsiya alsinatinā biḥusni ʿibāratihi,

and eased our faltering tongues through the beauty of its expression,

فَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَرْعَاهُ حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهِ،

Fa-ijʿalnā mimman yarʿāhu ḥaqqa riʿāyatihi,

make us among those who observe it as it deserves,

وَيَدِينُ لَكَ بِاعْتِقَادِ التَّسْلِيمِ لِمُحْكَمِ آيَاتِهِ،

Wayadīnu laka biʿtiqādi al-taslīmi limuḥkami āyātihi,

who serve You with firm submission to its clear and decisive verses,

وَيَفْزَعُ إِلَى الْإِقْرَارِ بِمُتَشَابِهِهِ

Wayafzaʿu ilā al-iqrāri bimutashābihihi

and turn in trust to affirm its verses of less apparent meaning

وَمُوضَحَاتِ بَيِّنَاتِهِ.

Wamūḍaḥāti bayyinātihi.

as well as its plainly explained teachings.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَنْزَلْتَهُ عَلَى نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ

Allāhumma innaka anzaltahu ʿalā nabiyyika muḥammadin

O God, You sent it down upon Your Prophet Muhammad,

صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ مُجْمَلًا،

Ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālihi mujmalan,

(God bless him and his family), in summary form.

وَأَلْهَمْتَهُ عِلْمَ عَجَائِبِهِ مُكَمَّلًا،

Wa-alhamtahu ʿilma ʿajāʾibihi mukammalan,

You inspired him with complete knowledge of its wonders,

وَوَرَّثْتَنَا عِلْمَهُ مُفَسَّرًا،

Wawarrathtanā ʿilmahu mufassaran,

and bequeathed its knowledge to us with its meaning explained.

وَفَضَّلْتَنَا عَلَى مَنْ جَهِلَ عِلْمَهُ،

Wafaḍḍaltanā ʿalā man jahila ʿilmahu,

You favoured us above those who lack its knowledge,

وَقَوَّيْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ

Waqawwaytanā ʿalayhi

and gave us the strength to bear it,

لِتَرْفَعَنَا فَوْقَ مَنْ لَمْ يُطِقْ حَمْلَهُ.

Litarfaʿanā fawqa man lam yuṭiq ḥamlahu.

to raise us above those who could not carry it.

اللَّهُمَّ فَكَمَا جَعَلْتَ قُلُوبَنَا لَهُ حَمَلَةً،

Allāhumma fakamā jaʿalta qulūbanā lahu ḥamalatan,

O God, just as You made our hearts bearers of it,

وَعَرَّفْتَنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ شَرَفَهُ وَفَضْلَهُ،

Waʿarraftanā biraḥmatika sharafahu wafaḍlahu,

and through Your mercy taught us its honour and worth,

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ الْخَطِيبِ بِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin al-khaṭībi bihi,

bless Muhammad, who proclaimed it,

وَعَلَى آلِهِ الْخُزَّانِ لَهُ،

Waʿalā ālihi al-khuzzāni lahu,

and his family, who guard its treasures.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَعْتَرِفُ بِأَنَّهُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ،

Wa-ijʿalnā mimman yaʿtarifu biʾannahu min ʿindika,

Make us among those who acknowledge that it comes from You,

حَتَّى لَا يُعَارِضَنَا الشَّكُّ فِي تَصْدِيقِهِ

Ḥattā lā yuʿāriḍanā al-shakku fī taṣdīqihi

so that no doubt challenges our belief in it,

وَلَا يَخْتَلِجَنَا الزَّيْغُ عَنْ قَصْدِ طَرِيقِهِ.

Walā yakhtalijanā al-zayghu ʿan qaṣdi ṭarīqihi.

and no deviation draws us away from its straight path.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِمَّنْ يَعْتَصِمُ بِحَبْلِهِ،

Wa-ijʿalnā mimman yaʿtaṣimu biḥablihi,

Make us among those who hold fast to its rope,

وَيَأْوِي مِنَ الْمُتَشَابِهَاتِ إِلَى حِرْزِ مَعْقِلِهِ،

Wayaʾwī mina al-mutashābihāti ilā ḥirzi maʿqilihi,

who seek shelter from uncertainties in its secure stronghold,

وَيَسْكُنُ فِي ظِلِّ جَنَاحِهِ،

Wayaskunu fī ẓilli janāḥihi,

who dwell in the shade of its wing,

وَيَهْتَدِي بِضَوْءِ صَبَاحِهِ،

Wayahtadī biḍawʾi ṣabāḥihi,

find guidance in the light of its morning,

وَيَقْتَدِي بِتَبَلُّجِ إِسْفَارِهِ،

Wayaqtadī bitaballuji isfārihi,

follow the radiance of its dawn,

وَيَسْتَصْبِحُ بِمِصْبَاحِهِ،

Wayastaṣbiḥu bimiṣbāḥihi,

draw light from its lamp,

وَلَا يَلْتَمِسُ الْهُدَى فِي غَيْرِهِ.

Walā yaltamisu al-hudā fī ghayrihi.

and seek guidance in nothing apart from it.

اللَّهُمَّ وَكَمَا نَصَبْتَ بِهِ مُحَمَّدًا عَلَمًا لِلدَّلَالَةِ عَلَيْكَ،

Allāhumma wakamā naṣabta bihi muḥammadan ʿalaman li-l-dalālati ʿalayka,

O God, through it You made Muhammad a sign pointing towards You,

وَأَنْهَجْتَ بِآلِهِ سُبُلَ الرِّضَا إِلَيْكَ،

Wa-anhajta biʾālihi subula al-riḍā ilayka,

and through his family made clear the paths to Your pleasure.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاجْعَلِ الْقُرْآنَ وَسِيلَةً لَنَا

Wa-ijʿali al-qurʾāna wasīlatan lanā

and make the Qur’an our means of reaching

إِلَى أَشْرَفِ مَنَازِلِ الْكَرَامَةِ،

Ilā ashrafi manāzili al-karāmati,

the most honoured dwelling places,

وَسُلَّمًا نَعْرُجُ فِيهِ إِلَى مَحَلِّ السَّلَامَةِ،

Wasullaman naʿruju fīhi ilā maḥalli al-salāmati,

a ladder by which we rise to the abode of safety,

وَسَبَبًا نُجْزَى بِهِ النَّجَاةَ فِي عَرْصَةِ الْقِيَامَةِ،

Wasababan nujzā bihi al-najāta fī ʿarṣati al-qiyāmati,

a means by which we are granted salvation on the plain of Resurrection,

وَذَرِيعَةً نَقْدَمُ بِهَا عَلَى نَعِيمِ دَارِ الْمُقَامَةِ.

Wadharīʿatan naqdamu bihā ʿalā naʿīmi dāri al-muqāmati.

and a way to enter the bliss of the everlasting home.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاحْطُطْ بِالْقُرْآنِ عَنَّا ثِقْلَ الْأَوْزَارِ،

Wa-uḥṭuṭ bi-al-qurʾāni ʿannā thiqla al-awzāri,

Through the Qur’an, lift the burden of sins from us,

وَهَبْ لَنَا حُسْنَ شَمَائِلِ الْأَبْرَارِ

Wahab lanā ḥusna shamāʾili al-abrāri

and give us the good character of the righteous.

وَاقْفُ بِنَا آثَارَ الَّذِينَ قَامُوا لَكَ بِهِ

Wa-uqfu binā āthāra alladhīna qāmū laka bihi

Lead us in the footsteps of those who stand before You reciting it

آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ وَأَطْرَافَ النَّهَارِ

Ānāʾa al-layli wa-aṭrāfa al-nahāri

through the hours of the night and at the day's beginning and end,

حَتَّى تُطَهِّرَنَا مِنْ كُلِّ دَنَسٍ بِتَطْهِيرِهِ،

Ḥattā tuṭahhiranā min kulli danasin bitaṭhīrihi,

until You cleanse us of every stain through its purifying power,

وَتَقْفُوَ بِنَا آثَارَ الَّذِينَ اسْتَضَاءُوا بِنُورِهِ،

Wataqfuwa binā āthāra alladhīna istaḍāʾū binūrihi,

and lead us in the footsteps of those who found light in its radiance,

وَلَمْ يُلْهِهِمُ الْأَمَلُ عَنِ الْعَمَلِ

Walam yulhihimu al-amalu ʿani al-ʿamali

whose hopes did not distract them from action

فَيَقْطَعَهُمْ بِخُدَعِ غُرُورِهِ.

Fayaqṭaʿahum bikhudaʿi ghurūrihi.

and cut them off through deceptive promises.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلِ الْقُرْآنَ لَنَا فِي ظُلَمِ اللَّيَالِي مُونِسًا

Wa-ijʿali al-qurʾāna lanā fī ẓulami al-layālī mūnisan

Make the Qur’an our companion in the darkness of night,

وَمِنْ نَزَغَاتِ الشَّيْطَانِ وَخَطَرَاتِ الْوَسَاوِسِ حَارِسًا،

Wamin nazaghāti al-shayṭāni wakhaṭarāti al-wasāwisi ḥārisan,

our guardian against Satan's promptings and passing whispers,

وَلِأَقْدَامِنَا عَنْ نَقْلِهَا إِلَى الْمَعَاصِي حَابِسًا،

Waliʾaqdāminā ʿan naqlihā ilā al-maʿāṣī ḥābisan,

a restraint upon our feet that keeps them from carrying us into sin,

وَلِأَلْسِنَتِنَا عَنِ الْخَوْضِ فِي الْبَاطِلِ

Waliʾalsinatinā ʿani al-khawḍi fī al-bāṭili

and a restraint upon our tongues from engaging in falsehood,

مِنْ غَيْرِ مَا آفَةٍ مُخْرِسًا،

Min ghayri mā āfatin mukhrisan,

silencing them without any affliction.

وَلِجَوَارِحِنَا عَنِ اقْتِرَافِ الْآثَامِ زَاجِرًا،

Walijawāriḥinā ʿani iqtirāfi al-āthāmi zājiran,

Let it keep our limbs from committing sins,

وَلِمَا طَوَتِ الْغَفْلَةُ عَنَّا مِنْ تَصَفُّحِ الِاعْتِبَارِ نَاشِرًا

Walimā ṭawati al-ghaflatu ʿannā min taṣaffuḥi al-iʿtibāri nāshiran

and unfold the lessons for reflection that heedlessness has hidden from us,

حَتَّى تُوصِلَ إِلَى قُلُوبِنَا فَهْمَ عَجَائِبِهِ

Ḥattā tūṣila ilā qulūbinā fahma ʿajāʾibihi

until You bring into our hearts an understanding of its wonders

وَزَوَاجِرَ أَمْثَالِهِ

Wazawājira amthālihi

and the warnings contained in its parables,

الَّتِي ضَعُفَتِ الْجِبَالُ الرَّوَاسِي عَلَى صَلَابَتِهَا عَنِ احْتِمَالِهِ.

Allatī ḍaʿufati al-jibālu al-rawāsī ʿalā ṣalābatihā ʿani iḥtimālihi.

whose weight the firmly rooted mountains, for all their strength, could not bear.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَدِمْ بِالْقُرْآنِ صَلَاحَ ظَاهِرِنَا،

Wa-adim bi-al-qurʾāni ṣalāḥa ẓāhirinā,

Through the Qur’an, keep our outward conduct sound,

وَاحْجُبْ بِهِ خَطَرَاتِ الْوَسَاوِسِ عَنْ صِحَّةِ ضَمَائِرِنَا،

Wa-uḥjub bihi khaṭarāti al-wasāwisi ʿan ṣiḥḥati ḍamāʾirinā,

and shield the integrity of our inner selves from passing whispers.

وَاغْسِلْ بِهِ دَرَنَ قُلُوبِنَا وَعَلَائِقَ أَوْزَارِنَا،

Wa-ighsil bihi darana qulūbinā waʿalāʾiqa awzārinā,

Wash away through it the grime of our hearts and the sins that cling to us,

وَاجْمَعْ بِهِ مُنْتَشَرَ أُمُورِنَا،

Wa-ijmaʿ bihi muntashara umūrinā,

and bring together through it our scattered affairs.

وَأَرْوِ بِهِ فِي مَوْقِفِ الْعَرْضِ عَلَيْكَ ظَمَأَ هَوَاجِرِنَا،

Wa-arwi bihi fī mawqifi al-ʿarḍi ʿalayka ẓamaʾa hawājirinā,

Quench through it our burning thirst when we stand exposed before You,

وَاكْسُنَا بِهِ حُلَلَ الْأَمَانِ

Wa-uksunā bihi ḥulala al-amāni

and clothe us through it in garments of safety

يَوْمَ الْفَزَعِ الْأَكْبَرِ فِي نُشُورِنَا.

Yawma al-fazaʿi al-akbari fī nushūrinā.

on the day of greatest terror, when we are raised from the dead.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْبُرْ بِالْقُرْآنِ خَلَّتَنَا مِنْ عَدَمِ الْإِمْلَاقِ،

Wa-ujbur bi-al-qurʾāni khallatanā min ʿadami al-imlāqi,

Through the Qur’an, mend the need that destitution has brought us,

وَسُقْ إِلَيْنَا بِهِ رَغَدَ الْعَيْشِ

Wasuq ilaynā bihi raghada al-ʿayshi

and bring us through it a life of ease

وَخِصْبَ سَعَةِ الْأَرْزَاقِ،

Wakhiṣba saʿati al-arzāqi,

and the fruitfulness of abundant provision.

وَجَنِّبْنَا بِهِ الضَّرَائِبَ الْمَذْمُومَةَ وَمَدَانِيَ الْأَخْلَاقِ،

Wajannibnā bihi al-ḍarāʾiba al-madhmūmata wamadāniya al-akhlāqi,

Keep us through it from blameworthy habits and base character,

وَاعْصِمْنَا بِهِ مِنْ هُوَّةِ الْكُفْرِ وَدَوَاعِي النِّفَاقِ

Wa-iʿṣimnā bihi min huwwati al-kufri wadawāʿī al-nifāqi

and protect us from the abyss of unbelief and the impulses of hypocrisy.

حَتَّى يَكُونَ لَنَا فِي الْقِيَامَةِ

Ḥattā yakūna lanā fī al-qiyāmati

Let it be, for us on the Day of Resurrection,

إِلَى رِضْوَانِكَ وَجِنَانِكَ قَائِدًا

Ilā riḍwānika wajinānika qāʾidan

a guide to Your pleasure and Your Gardens;

وَلَنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا عَنْ سَخَطِكَ وَتَعَدِّي حُدُودِكَ ذَائِدًا،

Walanā fī al-dunyā ʿan sakhaṭika wataʿaddī ḥudūdika dhāʾidan,

in this world, a guard against Your anger and the crossing of Your limits;

وَلِمَا عِنْدَكَ بِتَحْلِيلِ حَلَالِهِ

Walimā ʿindaka bitaḥlīli ḥalālihi

and a witness to what is with You, as we uphold what it permits

وَتَحْرِيمِ حَرَامِهِ شَاهِدًا.

Wataḥrīmi ḥarāmihi shāhidan.

and forbid what it prohibits.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَهَوِّنْ بِالْقُرْآنِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ عَلَى أَنْفُسِنَا

Wahawwin bi-al-qurʾāni ʿinda al-mawti ʿalā anfusinā

Through the Qur’an, ease for our souls, at the time of death,

كَرْبَ السِّيَاقِ،

Karba al-siyāqi,

the anguish of departure,

وَجَهْدَ الْأَنِينِ،

Wajahda al-anīni,

the strain of groaning,

وَتَرَادُفَ الْحَشَارِجِ

Watarādufa al-ḥashāriji

and the succession of rattling breaths,

إِذَا بَلَغَتِ النُّفُوسُ التَّرَاقِيَ

Idhā balaghati al-nufūsu al-tarāqiya

when souls rise to the collarbones

وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ

Waqīla man rāqin

and it is asked, “Who can heal?”

وَتَجَلَّى مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ لِقَبْضِهَا مِنْ حُجُبِ الْغُيُوبِ،

Watajallā malaku al-mawti liqabḍihā min ḥujubi al-ghuyūbi,

when the angel of death emerges from the veils of the unseen to take them,

وَرَمَاهَا عَنْ قَوْسِ الْمَنَايَا

Waramāhā ʿan qawsi al-manāyā

and shoots at them from the bow of death

بِأَسْهُمِ وَحْشَةِ الْفِرَاقِ،

Biʾas-humi waḥshati al-firāqi,

with arrows of the loneliness of parting,

وَدَافَ لَهَا مِنْ ذُعَافِ الْمَوْتِ

Wadāfa lahā min dhuʿāfi al-mawti

and mixes for them from death's deadly poison

كَأْسًا مَسْمُومَةَ الْمَذَاقِ،

Kaʾsan masmūmata al-madhāqi,

a cup with a venomous taste;

وَدَنَا مِنَّا إِلَى الْآخِرَةِ رَحِيلٌ وَانْطِلَاقٌ،

Wadanā minnā ilā al-ākhirati raḥīlun wa-inṭilāqun,

when our departure and journey to the hereafter draw near,

وَصَارَتِ الْأَعْمَالُ قَلَائِدَ فِي الْأَعْنَاقِ،

Waṣārati al-aʿmālu qalāʾida fī al-aʿnāqi,

and deeds become collars around our necks,

وَكَانَتِ الْقُبُورُ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى

Wakānati al-qubūru hiya al-maʾwā

and graves become our shelter

إِلَى مِيقَاتِ يَوْمِ التَّلَاقِ.

Ilā mīqāti yawmi al-talāqi.

until the appointed time of the Day of Meeting.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَبَارِكْ لَنَا فِي حُلُولِ دَارِ الْبِلَى

Wabārik lanā fī ḥulūli dāri al-bilā

Bless our arrival in the abode of decay

وَطُولِ الْمُقَامَةِ بَيْنَ أَطْبَاقِ الثَّرَى،

Waṭūli al-muqāmati bayna aṭbāqi al-tharā,

and our long stay between the layers of earth.

وَاجْعَلِ الْقُبُورَ بَعْدَ فِرَاقِ الدُّنْيَا خَيْرَ مَنَازِلِنَا،

Wa-ijʿali al-qubūra baʿda firāqi al-dunyā khayra manāzilinā,

Make our graves, after we leave this world, the best of our dwellings,

وَافْسَحْ لَنَا بِرَحْمَتِكَ فِي ضِيقِ مَلَاحِدِنَا،

Wa-ifsaḥ lanā biraḥmatika fī ḍīqi malāḥidinā,

and through Your mercy give us space within their narrow niches.

وَلَا تَفْضَحْنَا فِي حَاضِرِي الْقِيَامَةِ

Walā tafḍaḥnā fī ḥāḍirī al-qiyāmati

Do not disgrace us before those gathered at the Resurrection

بِمُوبِقَاتِ آثَامِنَا،

Bimūbiqāti āthāminā,

through our ruinous sins.

وَارْحَمْ بِالْقُرْآنِ فِي مَوْقِفِ الْعَرْضِ عَلَيْكَ

Wa-irḥam bi-al-qurʾāni fī mawqifi al-ʿarḍi ʿalayka

Through the Qur’an, have mercy, when we stand exposed before You,

ذُلَّ مَقَامِنَا،

Dhulla maqāminā,

on the lowliness of our position.

وَثَبِّتْ بِهِ عِنْدَ اضْطِرَابِ جِسْرِ جَهَنَّمَ

Wathabbit bihi ʿinda iḍṭirābi jisri jahannama

Through it, when the bridge over Hell shakes, steady

يَوْمَ الْمَجَازِ عَلَيْهَا زَلَلَ أَقْدَامِنَا،

Yawma al-majāzi ʿalayhā zalala aqdāminā,

our slipping feet on the day of crossing over it.

وَنَوِّرْ بِهِ قَبْلَ الْبَعْثِ سُدَفَ قُبُورِنَا،

Wanawwir bihi qabla al-baʿthi sudafa qubūrinā,

Through it, light the darkness of our graves before the resurrection.

وَنَجِّنَا بِهِ مِنْ كُلِّ كَرْبٍ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Wanajjinā bihi min kulli karbin yawma al-qiyāmati

Save us through it from every distress on the Day of Resurrection

وَشَدَائِدِ أَهْوَالِ يَوْمِ الطَّامَّةِ

Washadāʾidi ahwāli yawmi al-ṭāmmati

and the overwhelming terrors of the Day of the Great Catastrophe.

وَبَيِّضْ وُجُوهَنَا يَوْمَ تَسْوَدُّ وُجُوهُ الظَّلَمَةِ

Wabayyiḍ wujūhanā yawma taswaddu wujūhu al-ẓalamati

Brighten our faces on the day when the faces of the unjust grow dark,

فِي يَوْمِ الْحَسْرَةِ وَالنَّدَامَةِ،

Fī yawmi al-ḥasrati wa-al-nadāmati,

the day of grief and remorse.

وَاجْعَلْ لَنَا فِي صُدُورِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وُدًّا،

Wa-ijʿal lanā fī ṣudūri al-muʾminīna wuddan,

Place affection for us in the hearts of believers,

وَلَا تَجْعَلِ الْحَيَاةَ عَلَيْنَا نَكَدًا.

Walā tajʿali al-ḥayāta ʿalaynā nakadan.

and do not make life a hardship for us.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin ʿabdika warasūlika

O God, bless Muhammad, Your servant and Messenger,

كَمَا بَلَّغَ رِسَالَتَكَ،

Kamā ballagha risālataka,

as he delivered Your message,

وَصَدَعَ بِأَمْرِكَ،

Waṣadaʿa biʾamrika,

openly proclaimed Your command,

وَنَصَحَ لِعِبَادِكَ.

Wanaṣaḥa liʿibādika.

and sincerely counselled Your servants.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْ نَبِيَّنَا

Allāhumma ijʿal nabiyyanā

O God, grant our Prophet,

صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ

Ṣalawātuka ʿalayhi waʿalā ālihi

Your blessings be upon him and his family,

يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ أَقْرَبَ النَّبِيِّينَ مِنْكَ مَجْلِسًا،

Yawma al-qiyāmati aqraba al-nabiyyīna minka majlisan,

the seat nearest to You among the prophets on the Day of Resurrection,

وَأَمْكَنَهُمْ مِنْكَ شَفَاعَةً،

Wa-amkanahum minka shafāʿatan,

the strongest standing with You in intercession,

وَأَجَلَّهُمْ عِنْدَكَ قَدْرًا،

Wa-ajallahum ʿindaka qadran,

the highest rank in Your sight,

وَأَوْجَهَهُمْ عِنْدَكَ جَاهًا.

Wa-awjahahum ʿindaka jāhan.

and the greatest honour before You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-āli muḥammadin,

O God, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.

وَشَرِّفْ بُنْيَانَهُ،

Washarrif bunyānahu,

Honour the edifice he has built,

وَعَظِّمْ بُرْهَانَهُ،

Waʿaẓẓim burhānahu,

magnify his proof,

وَثَقِّلْ مِيزَانَهُ،

Wathaqqil mīzānahu,

make the balance of his good deeds heavy,

وَتَقَبَّلْ شَفَاعَتَهُ

Wataqabbal shafāʿatahu

accept his intercession,

وَقَرِّبْ وَسِيلَتَهُ،

Waqarrib wasīlatahu,

bring him to the station of nearness,

وَبَيِّضْ وَجْهَهُ،

Wabayyiḍ wajhahu,

brighten his face,

وَأَتِمَّ نُورَهُ،

Wa-atimma nūrahu,

complete his light,

وَارْفَعْ دَرَجَتَهُ،

Wa-irfaʿ darajatahu,

and raise his rank.

وَأَحْيِنَا عَلَى سُنَّتِهِ،

Wa-aḥyinā ʿalā sunnatihi,

Let us live by his way,

وَتَوَفَّنَا عَلَى مِلَّتِهِ،

Watawaffanā ʿalā millatihi,

and take us in death as followers of his faith.

وَخُذْ بِنَا مِنْهَاجَهُ،

Wakhudh binā minhājahu,

Lead us along his course,

وَاسْلُكْ بِنَا سَبِيلَهُ،

Wa-usluk binā sabīlahu,

guide us on his path,

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَهْلِ طَاعَتِهِ،

Wa-ijʿalnā min ahli ṭāʿatihi,

make us among those who obey him,

وَاحْشُرْنَا فِي زُمْرَتِهِ،

Wa-uḥshurnā fī zumratihi,

and gather us in his company.

وَأَوْرِدْنَا حَوْضَهُ،

Wa-awridnā ḥawḍahu,

Bring us to his pool,

وَاسْقِنَا بِكَأْسِهِ.

Wa-isqinā bikaʾsihi.

and let us drink from his cup.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family

صَلَاةً تُبَلِّغُهُ بِهَا أَفْضَلَ مَا يَأْمُلُ

Ṣalātan tuballighuhu bihā afḍala mā yaʾmulu

with a blessing through which he reaches the best that he hopes for

مِنْ خَيْرِكَ وَفَضْلِكَ وَكَرَامَتِكَ

Min khayrika wafaḍlika wakarāmatika

from Your goodness, bounty, and honour.

إِنَّكَ ذُو رَحْمَةٍ وَاسِعَةٍ وَفَضْلٍ كَرِيمٍ.

Innaka dhū raḥmatin wāsiʿatin wafaḍlin karīmin.

Yours is an all-embracing mercy and a generous bounty.

اللَّهُمَّ اجْزِهِ بِمَا بَلَّغَ مِنْ رِسَالَاتِكَ

Allāhumma ijzihi bimā ballagha min risālātika

O God, for the messages of Yours that he delivered,

وَأَدَّى مِنْ آيَاتِكَ

Wa-addā min āyātika

the signs of Yours that he conveyed,

وَنَصَحَ لِعِبَادِكَ

Wanaṣaḥa liʿibādika

his sincere counsel to Your servants,

وَجَاهَدَ فِي سَبِيلِكَ

Wajāhada fī sabīlika

and his striving in Your cause,

أَفْضَلَ مَا جَزَيْتَ أَحَدًا مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِكَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ

Afḍala mā jazayta aḥadan min malāʾikatika al-muqarrabīna

give him the finest reward You have given any of Your angels brought near,

وَأَنْبِيَائِكَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ الْمُصْطَفَيْنَ.

Wa-anbiyāʾika al-mursalīna al-muṣṭafayna.

or Your chosen prophets sent as messengers.

وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ

Wa-al-salāmu ʿalayhi waʿalā ālihi al-ṭayyibīna al-ṭāhirīna

Peace be upon him and upon his good and pure family,

وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ.

Waraḥmatu Allāhi wabarakātuhu.

and the mercy of God and His blessings.

الدُّعَاءُ ٤٣

Al-duʿāʾu 43

Prayer 43

إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَى الْهِلَالِ

Idhā naẓara ilā al-hilāli

When he saw the new moon

أَيُّهَا الْخَلْقُ الْمُطِيعُ

Ayyuhā al-khalqu al-muṭīʿu

O obedient creature,

الدَّائِبُ السَّرِيعُ

Al-dāʾibu al-sarīʿu

tireless and swift,

الْمُتَرَدِّدُ فِي مَنَازِلِ التَّقْدِيرِ

Al-mutaraddidu fī manāzili al-taqdīri

moving through the stations appointed for you,

الْمُتَصَرِّفُ فِي فَلَكِ التَّدْبِيرِ

Al-mutaṣarrifu fī falaki al-tadbīri

travelling in the orbit governed by divine ordering:

آمَنْتُ بِمَنْ نَوَّرَ بِكَ الظُّلَمَ

Āmantu biman nawwara bika al-ẓulama

I believe in the One who lights the darkness through you,

وَأَوْضَحَ بِكَ الْبُهَمَ

Wa-awḍaḥa bika al-buhama

makes hidden things visible through you,

وَجَعَلَكَ آيَةً مِنْ آيَاتِ مُلْكِهِ

Wajaʿalaka āyatan min āyāti mulkihi

and made you a sign among the signs of His sovereignty

وَعَلَامَةً مِنْ عَلَامَاتِ سُلْطَانِهِ

Waʿalāmatan min ʿalāmāti sulṭānihi

and a mark among the marks of His authority.

فَحَدَّ بِكَ الزَّمَانَ

Faḥadda bika al-zamāna

Through you He marked out time,

وَامْتَهَنَكَ بِالزِّيَادَةِ وَالنُّقْصَانِ

Wa-imtahanaka bi-al-ziyādati wa-al-nuqṣāni

and put you to service through waxing and waning,

وَالطُّلُوعِ وَالْأُفُولِ

Wa-al-ṭulūʿi wa-al-ufūli

rising and setting,

وَالْإِنَارَةِ وَالْكُسُوفِ.

Wa-al-inārati wa-al-kusūfi.

shining and eclipse.

فِي كُلِّ ذَٰلِكَ أَنْتَ لَهُ مُطِيعٌ

Fī kulli dhālika anta lahu muṭīʿun

In all this, you obey Him

وَإِلَى إِرَادَتِهِ سَرِيعٌ.

Wa-ilā irādatihi sarīʿun.

and hasten to fulfil His will.

سُبْحَانَهُ

Subḥānahu

Glory be to Him!

مَا أَعْجَبَ مَا دَبَّرَ فِي أَمْرِكَ!

Mā aʿjaba mā dabbara fī amrika!

How wondrously He has ordered your course,

وَأَلْطَفَ مَا صَنَعَ فِي شَأْنِكَ!

Wa-alṭafa mā ṣanaʿa fī shaʾnika!

and how subtly He has fashioned your affairs!

جَعَلَكَ مِفْتَاحَ شَهْرٍ حَادِثٍ لِأَمْرٍ حَادِثٍ.

Jaʿalaka miftāḥa shahrin ḥādithin liʾamrin ḥādithin.

He made you the opening of a new month for new events.

فَأَسْأَلُ اللَّهَ رَبِّي وَرَبَّكَ

Fa-asʾalu Allāha rabbī warabbaka

I ask God, my Lord and your Lord,

وَخَالِقِي وَخَالِقَكَ

Wakhāliqī wakhāliqaka

my Creator and your Creator,

وَمُقَدِّرِي وَمُقَدِّرَكَ

Wamuqaddirī wamuqaddiraka

the One who determines my measure and yours,

وَمُصَوِّرِي وَمُصَوِّرَكَ

Wamuṣawwirī wamuṣawwiraka

the One who shapes me and shapes you,

أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

An yuṣalliya ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

to bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَنْ يَجْعَلَكَ هِلَالَ بَرَكَةٍ

Wa-an yajʿalaka hilāla barakatin

and to make you a crescent of blessing

لَا تَمْحَقُهَا الْأَيَّامُ

Lā tamḥaquhā al-ayyāmu

which the passing days cannot diminish,

وَطَهَارَةٍ لَا تُدَنِّسُهَا الْآثَامُ.

Waṭahāratin lā tudannisuhā al-āthāmu.

and of purity which sins cannot stain.

هِلَالَ أَمْنٍ مِنَ الْآفَاتِ

Hilāla amnin mina al-āfāti

A crescent of safety from calamities

وَسَلَامَةٍ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ.

Wasalāmatin mina al-sayyiʾāti.

and freedom from wrongdoing;

هِلَالَ سَعْدٍ لَا نَحْسَ فِيهِ

Hilāla saʿdin lā naḥsa fīhi

a crescent of good fortune without misfortune,

وَيُمْنٍ لَا نَكَدَ مَعَهُ

Wayumnin lā nakada maʿahu

of blessing without hardship,

وَيُسْرٍ لَا يُمَازِجُهُ عُسْرٌ

Wayusrin lā yumāzijuhu ʿusrun

of ease unmixed with difficulty,

وَخَيْرٍ لَا يَشُوبُهُ شَرٌّ.

Wakhayrin lā yashūbuhu sharrun.

and of good untainted by evil;

هِلَالَ أَمْنٍ وَإِيمَانٍ

Hilāla amnin wa-īmānin

a crescent of safety and faith,

وَنِعْمَةٍ وَإِحْسَانٍ

Waniʿmatin wa-iḥsānin

of blessing and goodness,

وَسَلَامَةٍ وَإِسْلَامٍ.

Wasalāmatin wa-islāmin.

of wellbeing and submission to God.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَرْضَى مَنْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْهِ

Wa-ijʿalnā min arḍā man ṭalaʿa ʿalayhi

Make us among those most pleasing to You upon whom it rises,

وَأَزْكَى مَنْ نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ

Wa-azkā man naẓara ilayhi

among the purest of those who look upon it,

وَأَسْعَدَ مَنْ تَعَبَّدَ لَكَ فِيهِ.

Wa-asʿada man taʿabbada laka fīhi.

and the happiest of those who worship You in its month.

وَوَفِّقْنَا اللَّهُمَّ فِيهِ لِلطَّاعَةِ وَالتَّوْبَةِ

Wawaffiqnā Allāhumma fīhi li-l-ṭāʿati wa-al-tawbati

O God, enable us during it to obey You and turn to You in repentance.

وَاعْصِمْنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْحَوْبَةِ

Wa-iʿṣimnā fīhi mina al-ḥawbati

Protect us during it from sin,

وَاحْفَظْنَا فِيهِ مِنْ مُبَاشَرَةِ مَعْصِيَتِكَ

Wa-iḥfaẓnā fīhi min mubāsharati maʿṣiyatika

and keep us from engaging in disobedience to You.

وَأَوْزِعْنَا فِيهِ شُكْرَ نِعْمَتِكَ

Wa-awziʿnā fīhi shukra niʿmatika

Inspire us during it to thank You for Your blessing,

وَأَلْبِسْنَا فِيهِ جُنَنَ الْعَافِيَةِ

Wa-albisnā fīhi junana al-ʿāfiyati

clothe us in the shields of wellbeing,

وَأَتْمِمْ عَلَيْنَا بِاسْتِكْمَالِ طَاعَتِكَ فِيهِ الْمِنَّةَ

Wa-atmim ʿalaynā bistikmāli ṭāʿatika fīhi al-minnata

and complete Your favour to us by bringing our obedience to fulfilment.

إِنَّكَ الْمَنَّانُ الْحَمِيدُ

Innaka al-mannānu al-ḥamīdu

You are the Giver of blessings, worthy of all praise.

وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ.

Waṣallā Allāhu ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi al-ṭayyibīna al-ṭāhirīna.

May God bless Muhammad and his good and pure family.

الدُّعَاءُ ٤٤

Al-duʿāʾu 44

Prayer 44

إِذَا دَخَلَ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ

Idhā dakhala shahru ramaḍāna

When the month of Ramadan began

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي هَدَانَا لِحَمْدِهِ

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī hadānā liḥamdihi

Praise belongs to God, who guided us to praise Him

وَجَعَلَنَا مِنْ أَهْلِهِ،

Wajaʿalanā min ahlihi,

and made us among those who offer Him praise,

لِنَكُونَ لِإِحْسَانِهِ مِنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ

Linakūna liʾiḥsānihi mina al-shākirīna

so that we might be grateful for His goodness,

وَلِيَجْزِيَنَا عَلَى ذَٰلِكَ جَزَاءَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ.

Waliyajziyanā ʿalā dhālika jazāʾa al-muḥsinīna.

and He might reward us for it with the reward of those who do good.

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي حَبَانَا بِدِينِهِ،

Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī ḥabānā bidīnihi,

Praise belongs to God, who favoured us with His religion,

وَاخْتَصَّنَا بِمِلَّتِهِ،

Wa-ikhtaṣṣanā bimillatihi,

chose us for His faith,

وَسَبَّلَنَا فِي سُبُلِ إِحْسَانِهِ،

Wasabbalanā fī subuli iḥsānihi,

and set us on the paths of His goodness,

لِنَسْلُكَهَا بِمَنِّهِ إِلَى رِضْوَانِهِ،

Linaslukahā bimannihi ilā riḍwānihi,

so that through His grace we might follow them to His pleasure.

حَمْدًا يَتَقَبَّلُهُ مِنَّا،

Ḥamdan yataqabbaluhu minnā,

May this be praise that He accepts from us

وَيَرْضَى بِهِ عَنَّا.

Wayarḍā bihi ʿannā.

and through which He is pleased with us.

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي جَعَلَ مِنْ تِلْكَ السُّبُلِ شَهْرَهُ

Wa-al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī jaʿala min tilka al-subuli shahrahu

Praise belongs to God, who made His month one of those paths:

شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ،

Shahra ramaḍāna,

the month of Ramadan,

شَهْرَ الصِّيَامِ،

Shahra al-ṣiyāmi,

the month of fasting,

وَشَهْرَ الْإِسْلَامِ،

Washahra al-islāmi,

the month of submission to God,

وَشَهْرَ الطَّهُورِ،

Washahra al-ṭahūri,

the month of purification,

وَشَهْرَ التَّمْحِيصِ،

Washahra al-tamḥīṣi,

the month of being cleansed through trial,

وَشَهْرَ الْقِيَامِ،

Washahra al-qiyāmi,

and the month of standing in prayer,

الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِلنَّاسِ،

Alladhī unzila fīhi al-qurʾānu hudan li-l-nāsi,

in which the Qur’an was sent down as guidance for humankind,

وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ.

Wabayyinātin mina al-hudā wa-al-furqāni.

with clear proofs of guidance and a criterion between right and wrong.

فَأَبَانَ فَضِيلَتَهُ عَلَى سَائِرِ الشُّهُورِ

Fa-abāna faḍīlatahu ʿalā sāʾiri al-shuhūri

He made its worth above all other months clear

بِمَا جَعَلَ لَهُ مِنَ الْحُرُمَاتِ الْمَوْفُورَةِ

Bimā jaʿala lahu mina al-ḥurumāti al-mawfūrati

through the many sacred observances He assigned to it

وَالْفَضَائِلِ الْمَشْهُورَةِ،

Wa-al-faḍāʾili al-mashhūrati,

and its well-known virtues.

فَحَرَّمَ فِيهِ مَا أَحَلَّ فِي غَيْرِهِ إِعْظَامًا،

Faḥarrama fīhi mā aḥalla fī ghayrihi iʿẓāman,

To magnify it, He forbade during it what He permitted at other times;

وَحَجَرَ فِيهِ الْمَطَاعِمَ وَالْمَشَارِبَ إِكْرَامًا،

Waḥajara fīhi al-maṭāʿima wa-al-mashāriba ikrāman,

to honour it, He restricted eating and drinking during it.

وَجَعَلَ لَهُ وَقْتًا بَيِّنًا

Wajaʿala lahu waqtan bayyinan

He appointed a clearly defined time for it,

لَا يُجِيزُ جَلَّ وَعَزَّ أَنْ يُقَدَّمَ قَبْلَهُ،

Lā yujīzu jalla waʿazza an yuqaddama qablahu,

which He, majestic and mighty, does not allow to be brought forward,

وَلَا يَقْبَلُ أَنْ يُؤَخَّرَ عَنْهُ.

Walā yaqbalu an yuʾakhkhara ʿanhu.

nor accepts being put off until later.

ثُمَّ فَضَّلَ لَيْلَةً وَاحِدَةً مِنْ لَيَالِيهِ

Thumma faḍḍala laylatan wāḥidatan min layālīhi

Then He favoured a single night within it

عَلَى لَيَالِي أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ،

ʿalā layālī alfi shahrin,

above the nights of a thousand months,

وَسَمَّاهَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ،

Wasammāhā laylata al-qadri,

and called it the Night of Decree.

تَنَزَّلُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ فِيهَا

Tanazzalu al-malāʾikatu wa-al-rūḥu fīhā

The angels and the Spirit descend during it,

بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهِمْ مِنْ كُلِّ أَمْرٍ،

Biʾidhni rabbihim min kulli amrin,

by their Lord's permission, with every decree.

سَلَامٌ دَائِمُ الْبَرَكَةِ إِلَى طُلُوعِ الْفَجْرِ،

Salāmun dāʾimu al-barakati ilā ṭulūʿi al-fajri,

It is peace, with blessing that lasts until dawn,

عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ

ʿalā man yashāʾu min ʿibādihi

for whichever of His servants He wills,

بِمَا أَحْكَمَ مِنْ قَضَائِهِ.

Bimā aḥkama min qaḍāʾihi.

in accordance with His firmly established decree.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَلْهِمْنَا مَعْرِفَةَ فَضْلِهِ

Wa-alhimnā maʿrifata faḍlihi

Inspire us to recognise this month's worth,

وَإِجْلَالَ حُرْمَتِهِ

Wa-ijlāla ḥurmatihi

to honour its sacredness,

وَالتَّحَفُّظَ مِمَّا حَظَرْتَ فِيهِ

Wa-al-taḥaffuẓa mimmā ḥaẓarta fīhi

and to guard ourselves from what You have forbidden during it.

وَأَعِنَّا عَلَى صِيَامِهِ بِكَفِّ الْجَوَارِحِ عَنْ مَعَاصِيكَ،

Wa-aʿinnā ʿalā ṣiyāmihi bikaffi al-jawāriḥi ʿan maʿāṣīka,

Help us fast through it by restraining our limbs from disobeying You

وَاسْتِعْمَالِهَا فِيهِ بِمَا يُرْضِيكَ

Wa-istiʿmālihā fīhi bimā yurḍīka

and using them during it in ways that please You,

حَتَّى لَا نُصْغِيَ بِأَسْمَاعِنَا إِلَى لَغْوٍ،

Ḥattā lā nuṣghiya biʾasmāʿinā ilā laghwin,

so that we do not lend our ears to idle talk,

وَلَا نُسْرِعَ بِأَبْصَارِنَا إِلَى لَهْوٍ،

Walā nusriʿa biʾabṣārinā ilā lahwin,

or let our eyes hasten towards empty diversion;

وَحَتَّى لَا نَبْسُطَ أَيْدِيَنَا إِلَى مَحْظُورٍ،

Waḥattā lā nabsuṭa aydiyanā ilā maḥẓūrin,

so that we do not stretch our hands towards anything forbidden,

وَلَا نَخْطُوَ بِأَقْدَامِنَا إِلَى مَحْجُورٍ،

Walā nakhṭuwa biʾaqdāminā ilā maḥjūrin,

or take a step towards anything unlawful;

وَحَتَّى لَا تَعِيَ بُطُونُنَا إِلَّا مَا أَحْلَلْتَ،

Waḥattā lā taʿiya buṭūnunā illā mā aḥlalta,

so that our stomachs contain only what You permit,

وَلَا تَنْطِقَ أَلْسِنَتُنَا إِلَّا بِمَا مَثَّلْتَ

Walā tanṭiqa alsinatunā illā bimā maththalta

and our tongues speak only what You have set forth;

وَلَا نَتَكَلَّفَ إِلَّا مَا يُدْنِي مِنْ ثَوَابِكَ،

Walā natakallafa illā mā yudnī min thawābika,

so that we undertake only what brings us nearer to Your reward,

وَلَا نَتَعَاطَى إِلَّا الَّذِي يَقِي مِنْ عِقَابِكَ.

Walā nataʿāṭā illā alladhī yaqī min ʿiqābika.

and pursue only what protects us from Your punishment.

ثُمَّ خَلِّصْ ذَٰلِكَ كُلَّهُ مِنْ رِئَاءِ الْمُرَائِينَ

Thumma khalliṣ dhālika kullahu min riʾāʾi al-murāʾīna

Then purify all this from the ostentation of those who act to be seen

وَسُمْعَةِ الْمُسْمِعِينَ،

Wasumʿati al-musmiʿīna,

and the self-display of those who act to be spoken of,

لَا نُشْرِكُ فِيهِ أَحَدًا دُونَكَ،

Lā nushriku fīhi aḥadan dūnaka,

so that we associate no one with You in it

وَلَا نَبْتَغِي فِيهِ مُرَادًا سِوَاكَ.

Walā nabtaghī fīhi murādan siwāka.

and seek through it no purpose apart from You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَقِفْنَا فِيهِ عَلَى مَوَاقِيتِ الصَّلَوَاتِ الْخَمْسِ

Waqifnā fīhi ʿalā mawāqīti al-ṣalawāti al-khamsi

During this month, keep us attentive to the times of the five prayers,

بِحُدُودِهَا الَّتِي حَدَّدْتَ،

Biḥudūdihā allatī ḥaddadta,

with the limits You have established,

وَفُرُوضِهَا الَّتِي فَرَضْتَ

Wafurūḍihā allatī faraḍta

the obligations You have prescribed,

وَوَظَائِفِهَا الَّتِي وَظَّفْتَ،

Wawaẓāʾifihā allatī waẓẓafta,

the duties You have assigned,

وَأَوْقَاتِهَا الَّتِي وَقَّتَّ.

Wa-awqātihā allatī waqqatta.

and the times You have appointed.

وَأَنْزِلْنَا فِيهَا مَنْزِلَةَ الْمُصِيبِينَ لِمَنَازِلِهَا

Wa-anzilnā fīhā manzilata al-muṣībīna limanāzilihā

Place us among those who give the prayers their proper place,

الْحَافِظِينَ لِأَرْكَانِهَا

Al-ḥāfiẓīna liʾarkānihā

preserve their essential acts,

الْمُؤَدِّينَ لَهَا فِي أَوْقَاتِهَا

Al-muʾaddīna lahā fī awqātihā

and perform them at their appointed times,

عَلَى مَا سَنَّهُ عَبْدُكَ وَرَسُولُكَ

ʿalā mā sannahu ʿabduka warasūluka

according to the practice of Your servant and Messenger,

صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ

Ṣalawātuka ʿalayhi wa-ālihi

Your blessings be upon him and his family,

فِي رُكُوعِهَا وَسُجُودِهَا وَجَمِيعِ فَوَاضِلِهَا

Fī rukūʿihā wasujūdihā wajamīʿi fawāḍilihā

in their bowing, prostration, and all their other acts of devotion,

عَلَى أَتَمِّ الطَّهُورِ وَأَسْبَغِهِ

ʿalā atammi al-ṭahūri wa-asbaghihi

with the fullest and most thorough purification,

وَأَبْيَنِ الْخُشُوعِ وَأَبْلَغِهِ.

Wa-abyani al-khushūʿi wa-ablaghihi.

and the clearest and deepest humility.

وَوَفِّقْنَا فِيهِ لِأَنْ نَصِلَ أَرْحَامَنَا بِالْبِرِّ وَالصِّلَةِ

Wawaffiqnā fīhi liʾan naṣila arḥāmanā bi-al-birri wa-al-ṣilati

Enable us during it to sustain our family ties with kindness and gifts,

وَأَنْ نَتَعَاهَدَ جِيرَانَنَا بِالْإِفْضَالِ وَالْعَطِيَّةِ

Wa-an nataʿāhada jīrānanā bi-al-ifḍāli wa-al-ʿaṭiyyati

and to care for our neighbours with generosity and giving.

وَأَنْ نُخَلِّصَ أَمْوَالَنَا مِنَ التَّبِعَاتِ،

Wa-an nukhalliṣa amwālanā mina al-tabiʿāti,

Let us free our wealth from the claims others have upon it,

وَأَنْ نُطَهِّرَهَا بِإِخْرَاجِ الزَّكَوَاتِ،

Wa-an nuṭahhirahā biʾikhrāji al-zakawāti,

and purify it by paying the obligatory alms.

وَأَنْ نُرَاجِعَ مَنْ هَاجَرَنَا

Wa-an nurājiʿa man hājaranā

Let us return to those who have kept away from us,

وَأَنْ نُنْصِفَ مَنْ ظَلَمَنَا

Wa-an nunṣifa man ẓalamanā

deal justly with those who have wronged us,

وَأَنْ نُسَالِمَ مَنْ عَادَانَا

Wa-an nusālima man ʿādānā

and make peace with those who have opposed us,

حَاشَا مَنْ عُودِيَ فِيكَ وَلَكَ،

Ḥāshā man ʿūdiya fīka walaka,

except those opposed because of You and for Your sake;

فَإِنَّهُ الْعَدُوُّ الَّذِي لَا نُوَالِيهِ،

Fa-innahu al-ʿaduwwu alladhī lā nuwālīhi,

such a person is an enemy to whom we give no allegiance,

وَالْحِزْبُ الَّذِي لَا نُصَافِيهِ.

Wa-al-ḥizbu alladhī lā nuṣāfīhi.

a party with whom we share no close friendship.

وَأَنْ نَتَقَرَّبَ إِلَيْكَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ الزَّاكِيَةِ

Wa-an nataqarraba ilayka fīhi mina al-aʿmāli al-zākiyati

Let us draw near to You during it through pure deeds

بِمَا تُطَهِّرُنَا بِهِ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ،

Bimā tuṭahhirunā bihi mina al-dhunūbi,

by which You cleanse us of sins

وَتَعْصِمُنَا فِيهِ مِمَّا نَسْتَأْنِفُ مِنَ الْعُيُوبِ،

Wataʿṣimunā fīhi mimmā nastaʾnifu mina al-ʿuyūbi,

and protect us from fresh failings,

حَتَّى لَا يُورِدَ عَلَيْكَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِكَ

Ḥattā lā yūrida ʿalayka aḥadun min malāʾikatika

so that none of Your angels brings before You

إِلَّا دُونَ مَا نُورِدُ مِنْ أَبْوَابِ الطَّاعَةِ لَكَ،

Illā dūna mā nūridu min abwābi al-ṭāʿati laka,

as much as we bring of the many forms of obedience to You

وَأَنْوَاعِ الْقُرْبَةِ إِلَيْكَ.

Wa-anwāʿi al-qurbati ilayka.

and the varied ways of drawing near to You.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ بِحَقِّ هَٰذَا الشَّهْرِ،

Allāhumma innī asʾaluka biḥaqqi hādhā al-shahri,

O God, I ask You by the right of this month,

وَبِحَقِّ مَنْ تَعَبَّدَ لَكَ فِيهِ

Wabiḥaqqi man taʿabbada laka fīhi

and by the right of whoever has worshipped You during it,

مِنِ ابْتِدَائِهِ إِلَى وَقْتِ فَنَائِهِ

Mini ibtidāʾihi ilā waqti fanāʾihi

from its beginning until its end,

مِنْ مَلَكٍ قَرَّبْتَهُ

Min malakin qarrabtahu

whether an angel You have brought near,

أَوْ نَبِيٍّ أَرْسَلْتَهُ

Aw nabiyyin arsaltahu

a prophet You have sent,

أَوْ عَبْدٍ صَالِحٍ اخْتَصَصْتَهُ

Aw ʿabdin ṣāliḥin ikhtaṣaṣtahu

or a righteous servant You have chosen,

أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ.

An tuṣalliya ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi.

to bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَهِّلْنَا فِيهِ لِمَا وَعَدْتَ أَوْلِيَاءَكَ مِنْ كَرَامَتِكَ،

Wa-ahhilnā fīhi limā waʿadta awliyāʾaka min karāmatika,

Make us worthy, during it, of the honour You promised Your friends.

وَأَوْجِبْ لَنَا فِيهِ

Wa-awjib lanā fīhi

Grant us during it

مَا أَوْجَبْتَ لِأَهْلِ الْمُبَالَغَةِ فِي طَاعَتِكَ،

Mā awjabta liʾahli al-mubālaghati fī ṭāʿatika,

what You have granted those who give themselves fully to obeying You.

وَاجْعَلْنَا فِي نَظْمِ مَنِ اسْتَحَقَّ الرَّفِيعَ الْأَعْلَى بِرَحْمَتِكَ.

Wa-ijʿalnā fī naẓmi mani istaḥaqqa al-rafīʿa al-aʿlā biraḥmatika.

Through Your mercy, place us among those worthy of the highest station.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَجَنِّبْنَا الْإِلْحَادَ فِي تَوْحِيدِكَ

Wajannibnā al-ilḥāda fī tawḥīdika

Keep us from deviation in affirming Your oneness,

وَالتَّقْصِيرَ فِي تَمْجِيدِكَ

Wa-al-taqṣīra fī tamjīdika

from falling short in glorifying You,

وَالشَّكَّ فِي دِينِكَ

Wa-al-shakka fī dīnika

from doubt in Your religion,

وَالْعَمَى عَنْ سَبِيلِكَ

Wa-al-ʿamā ʿan sabīlika

from blindness to Your path,

وَالْإِغْفَالَ لِحُرْمَتِكَ،

Wa-al-ighfāla liḥurmatika,

from neglect of what is sacred to You,

وَالِانْخِدَاعَ لِعَدُوِّكَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ.

Wa-al-inkhidāʿa liʿaduwwika al-shayṭāni al-rajīmi.

and from being deceived by Your enemy, Satan the outcast.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَإِذَا كَانَ لَكَ فِي كُلِّ لَيْلَةٍ مِنْ لَيَالِي شَهْرِنَا هَٰذَا

Wa-idhā kāna laka fī kulli laylatin min layālī shahrinā hādhā

Since each night of this month You have

رِقَابٌ يُعْتِقُهَا عَفْوُكَ

Riqābun yuʿtiquhā ʿafwuka

souls whom Your pardon sets free

أَوْ يَهَبُهَا صَفْحُكَ

Aw yahabuhā ṣafḥuka

or whom Your forgiveness grants release,

فَاجْعَلْ رِقَابَنَا مِنْ تِلْكَ الرِّقَابِ

Fa-ijʿal riqābanā min tilka al-riqābi

make our souls among those souls,

وَاجْعَلْنَا لِشَهْرِنَا مِنْ خَيْرِ أَهْلٍ وَأَصْحَابٍ.

Wa-ijʿalnā lishahrinā min khayri ahlin wa-aṣḥābin.

and make us among this month's best people and companions.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَامْحَقْ ذُنُوبَنَا مَعَ امِّحَاقِ هِلَالِهِ

Wa-imḥaq dhunūbanā maʿa immiḥāqi hilālihi

Let our sins disappear as its crescent wanes,

وَاسْلَخْ عَنَّا تَبِعَاتِنَا مَعَ انْسِلَاخِ أَيَّامِهِ

Wa-islakh ʿannā tabiʿātinā maʿa insilākhi ayyāmihi

and strip our liabilities from us as its days slip away,

حَتَّى يَنْقَضِيَ عَنَّا

Ḥattā yanqaḍiya ʿannā

until it passes from us

وَقَدْ صَفَّيْتَنَا فِيهِ مِنَ الْخَطِيئَاتِ

Waqad ṣaffaytanā fīhi mina al-khaṭīʾāti

with You having cleansed us of sins during it

وَأَخْلَصْتَنَا فِيهِ مِنَ السَّيِّئَاتِ.

Wa-akhlaṣtanā fīhi mina al-sayyiʾāti.

and freed us from misdeeds.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَإِنْ مِلْنَا فِيهِ فَعَدِّلْنَا،

Wa-in milnā fīhi faʿaddilnā,

If we lean away during it, set us straight;

وَإِنْ زِغْنَا فِيهِ فَقَوِّمْنَا

Wa-in zighnā fīhi faqawwimnā

if we stray, bring us back to the right course;

وَإِنِ اشْتَمَلَ عَلَيْنَا عَدُوُّكَ الشَّيْطَانُ

Wa-ini ishtamala ʿalaynā ʿaduwwuka al-shayṭānu

if Your enemy Satan gains a hold over us,

فَاسْتَنْقِذْنَا مِنْهُ.

Fa-istanqidhnā minhu.

rescue us from him.

اللَّهُمَّ اشْحَنْهُ بِعِبَادَتِنَا إِيَّاكَ

Allāhumma ishḥanhu biʿibādatinā iyyāka

O God, fill this month with our worship of You,

وَزَيِّنْ أَوْقَاتَهُ بِطَاعَتِنَا لَكَ،

Wazayyin awqātahu biṭāʿatinā laka,

and adorn its hours with our obedience to You.

وَأَعِنَّا فِي نَهَارِهِ عَلَى صِيَامِهِ،

Wa-aʿinnā fī nahārihi ʿalā ṣiyāmihi,

Help us fast throughout its days,

وَفِي لَيْلِهِ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ وَالتَّضَرُّعِ إِلَيْكَ

Wafī laylihi ʿalā al-ṣalāti wa-al-taḍarruʿi ilayka

and at night help us pray and plead with You,

وَالْخُشُوعِ لَكَ،

Wa-al-khushūʿi laka,

bow in humility before You,

وَالذِّلَّةِ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ

Wa-al-dhillati bayna yadayka

and stand lowly in Your presence,

حَتَّى لَا يَشْهَدَ نَهَارُهُ عَلَيْنَا بِغَفْلَةٍ،

Ḥattā lā yashhada nahāruhu ʿalaynā bighaflatin,

so that its days bear no witness against us for heedlessness,

وَلَا لَيْلُهُ بِتَفْرِيطٍ.

Walā layluhu bitafrīṭin.

nor its nights for neglect.

اللَّهُمَّ وَاجْعَلْنَا فِي سَائِرِ الشُّهُورِ وَالْأَيَّامِ كَذَٰلِكَ

Allāhumma wa-ijʿalnā fī sāʾiri al-shuhūri wa-al-ayyāmi ka-dhālika

O God, make us like this in every other month and day,

مَا عَمَّرْتَنَا،

Mā ʿammartanā,

for as long as You give us life.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ عِبَادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ

Wa-ijʿalnā min ʿibādika al-ṣāliḥīna

Make us among Your righteous servants

الَّذِينَ يَرِثُونَ الْفِرْدَوْسَ،

Alladhīna yarithūna al-firdawsa,

who inherit Paradise

هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ،

Hum fīhā khālidūna,

and remain there for ever;

وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ

Wa-alladhīna yuʾtūna mā ātaw waqulūbuhum wajilatun

those who give what they give while their hearts tremble,

أَنَّهُمْ إِلَى رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ،

Annahum ilā rabbihim rājiʿūna,

knowing that they will return to their Lord;

وَمِنَ الَّذِينَ يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ

Wamina alladhīna yusāriʿūna fī al-khayrāti

and those who hasten to good deeds

وَهُمْ لَهَا سَابِقُونَ.

Wahum lahā sābiqūna.

and are foremost in doing them.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family

فِي كُلِّ وَقْتٍ وَكُلِّ أَوَانٍ وَعَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ

Fī kulli waqtin wakulli awānin waʿalā kulli ḥālin

at every time, in every season, and in every condition,

عَدَدَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى مَنْ صَلَّيْتَ عَلَيْهِ،

ʿadada mā ṣallayta ʿalā man ṣallayta ʿalayhi,

as many times as You have blessed anyone You have ever blessed,

وَأَضْعَافَ ذَٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ

Wa-aḍʿāfa dhālika kullihi

and many times all of that,

بِالْأَضْعَافِ الَّتِي لَا يُحْصِيهَا غَيْرُكَ،

Bi-al-aḍʿāfi allatī lā yuḥṣīhā ghayruka,

multiplied beyond the count of anyone but You.

إِنَّكَ فَعَّالٌ لِمَا تُرِيدُ.

Innaka faʿʿālun limā turīdu.

You do whatever You will.

Al-duʿāʾu 45

Prayer 45

فِي وَدَاعِ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Fī wadāʿi shahri ramaḍāna

Bidding farewell to the month of Ramadan

اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ لَا يَرْغَبُ فِي الْجَزَاءِ،

Allāhumma yā man lā yarghabu fī al-jazāʾi,

O God, You who desire no repayment,

وَلَا يَنْدَمُ عَلَى الْعَطَاءِ،

Walā yandamu ʿalā al-ʿaṭāʾi,

and never regret giving,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يُكَافِئُ عَبْدَهُ عَلَى السَّوَاءِ،

Wayā man lā yukāfiʾu ʿabdahu ʿalā al-sawāʾi,

You who do not repay Your servant with a merely equal return:

مِنَّتُكَ ابْتِدَاءٌ،

Minnatuka ibtidāʾun,

Your favour comes without being earned,

وَعَفْوُكَ تَفَضُّلٌ،

Waʿafwuka tafaḍḍulun,

Your pardon is pure generosity,

وَعُقُوبَتُكَ عَدْلٌ،

Waʿuqūbatuka ʿadlun,

Your punishment is justice,

وَقَضَاؤُكَ خِيَرَةٌ.

Waqaḍāʾuka khiyaratun.

and Your decree chooses what is best.

إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَ لَمْ تَشُبْ عَطَاءَكَ بِمَنٍّ،

In aʿṭayta lam tashub ʿaṭāʾaka bimannin,

When You give, You do not spoil the gift by reminding us of our debt;

وَإِنْ مَنَعْتَ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَنْعُكَ تَعَدِّيًا.

Wa-in manaʿta lam yakun manʿuka taʿaddiyan.

when You withhold, Your withholding is no injustice.

تَشْكُرُ مَنْ شَكَرَكَ

Tashkuru man shakaraka

You appreciate those who thank You,

وَأَنْتَ أَلْهَمْتَهُ شُكْرَكَ،

Wa-anta alhamtahu shukraka,

though You inspired them to give You thanks.

وَتُكَافِئُ مَنْ حَمِدَكَ

Watukāfiʾu man ḥamidaka

You reward those who praise You,

وَأَنْتَ عَلَّمْتَهُ حَمْدَكَ،

Wa-anta ʿallamtahu ḥamdaka,

though You taught them to praise You.

تَسْتُرُ عَلَى مَنْ لَوْ شِئْتَ فَضَحْتَهُ

Tasturu ʿalā man law shiʾta faḍaḥtahu

You conceal the faults of those You could expose if You wished,

وَتَجُودُ عَلَى مَنْ لَوْ شِئْتَ مَنَعْتَهُ،

Watajūdu ʿalā man law shiʾta manaʿtahu,

and give generously to those You could deny if You wished,

وَكِلَاهُمَا أَهْلٌ مِنْكَ لِلْفَضِيحَةِ وَالْمَنْعِ،

Wakilāhumā ahlun minka li-l-faḍīḥati wa-al-manʿi,

though both deserve exposure and deprivation from You.

غَيْرَ أَنَّكَ بَنَيْتَ أَفْعَالَكَ عَلَى التَّفَضُّلِ،

Ghayra annaka banayta afʿālaka ʿalā al-tafaḍḍuli,

Yet You have made generosity the foundation of Your actions,

وَأَجْرَيْتَ قُدْرَتَكَ عَلَى التَّجَاوُزِ،

Wa-ajrayta qudrataka ʿalā al-tajāwuzi,

and directed Your power towards forgiveness.

وَتَلَقَّيْتَ مَنْ عَصَاكَ بِالْحِلْمِ،

Watalaqqayta man ʿaṣāka bi-al-ḥilmi,

You meet those who defy You with forbearance,

وَأَمْهَلْتَ مَنْ قَصَدَ لِنَفْسِهِ بِالظُّلْمِ.

Wa-amhalta man qaṣada linafsihi bi-al-ẓulmi.

and grant respite to those bent on wronging themselves.

تَسْتَنْظِرُهُمْ بِأَنَاتِكَ إِلَى الْإِنَابَةِ،

Tastanẓiruhum biʾanātika ilā al-inābati,

In Your patience, You give them time to return,

وَتَتْرُكُ مُعَاجَلَتَهُمْ إِلَى التَّوْبَةِ

Watatruku muʿājalatahum ilā al-tawbati

and hold back immediate punishment to allow repentance,

لِكَيْلَا يَهْلِكَ عَلَيْكَ هَالِكُهُمْ،

Likaylā yahlika ʿalayka hālikuhum,

so that none of them perishes despite Your care,

وَلَا يَشْقَى بِنِعْمَتِكَ شَقِيُّهُمْ

Walā yashqā biniʿmatika shaqiyyuhum

or becomes wretched despite Your blessing,

إِلَّا عَنْ طُولِ الْإِعْذَارِ إِلَيْهِ،

Illā ʿan ṭūli al-iʿdhāri ilayhi,

until You have given him ample warning,

وَبَعْدَ تَرَادُفِ الْحُجَّةِ عَلَيْهِ،

Wabaʿda tarādufi al-ḥujjati ʿalayhi,

and proof upon proof has been presented to him.

كَرَمًا مِنْ عَفْوِكَ يَا كَرِيمُ،

Karaman min ʿafwika yā karīmu,

Such is the generosity of Your pardon, O Generous One,

وَعَائِدَةً مِنْ عَطْفِكَ يَا حَلِيمُ.

Waʿāʾidatan min ʿaṭfika yā ḥalīmu.

and the kindness that flows from Your tenderness, O Forbearing One.

أَنْتَ الَّذِي فَتَحْتَ لِعِبَادِكَ بَابًا إِلَى عَفْوِكَ

Anta alladhī fataḥta liʿibādika bāban ilā ʿafwika

You opened for Your servants a door to Your pardon,

وَسَمَّيْتَهُ التَّوْبَةَ،

Wasammaytahu al-tawbata,

and named it repentance.

وَجَعَلْتَ عَلَى ذَٰلِكَ الْبَابِ دَلِيلًا مِنْ وَحْيِكَ

Wajaʿalta ʿalā dhālika al-bābi dalīlan min waḥyika

You placed a guide to that door in Your revelation,

لِئَلَّا يَضِلُّوا عَنْهُ

Liʾallā yaḍillū ʿanhu

so that they would not lose their way to it.

فَقُلْتَ تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ:

Faqulta tabāraka ismuka:

You said, blessed be Your name:

«تُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًا

«tūbū ilā Allāhi tawbatan naṣūḥan

“Turn to God in sincere repentance.

عَسَى رَبُّكُمْ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ عَنْكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ

ʿasā rabbukum an yukaffira ʿankum sayyiʾātikum

Your Lord may wipe away your misdeeds

وَيُدْخِلَكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ

Wayudkhilakum jannātin tajrī min taḥtihā al-anhāru

and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow,

يَوْمَ لَا يُخْزِي اللَّهُ النَّبِيَّ

Yawma lā yukhzī Allāhu al-nabiyya

on the day when God will not disgrace the Prophet

وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ

Wa-alladhīna āmanū maʿahu

and those who believed with him.

نُورُهُمْ يَسْعَى بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَبِأَيْمَانِهِمْ

Nūruhum yasʿā bayna aydīhim wabiʾaymānihim

Their light will move ahead of them and on their right.

يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا أَتْمِمْ لَنَا نُورَنَا

Yaqūlūna rabbanā atmim lanā nūranā

They will say, ‘Our Lord, complete our light for us,

وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا

Wa-ighfir lanā

and forgive us.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ».

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun».

You have power over all things.’”

فَمَا عُذْرُ مَنْ أَغْفَلَ دُخُولَ ذَٰلِكَ الْمَنْزِلِ

Famā ʿudhru man aghfala dukhūla dhālika al-manzili

What excuse has anyone who neglects to enter that dwelling

بَعْدَ فَتْحِ الْبَابِ وَإِقَامَةِ الدَّلِيلِ؟

Baʿda fatḥi al-bābi wa-iqāmati al-dalīli?

once the door has been opened and the guide put in place?

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي زِدْتَ فِي السَّوْمِ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ لِعِبَادِكَ

Wa-anta alladhī zidta fī al-sawmi ʿalā nafsika liʿibādika

You raised the price You Yourself would pay Your servants,

تُرِيدُ رِبْحَهُمْ فِي مُتَاجَرَتِهِمْ لَكَ،

Turīdu ribḥahum fī mutājaratihim laka,

desiring their profit in their dealings with You,

وَفَوْزَهُمْ بِالْوِفَادَةِ عَلَيْكَ

Wafawzahum bi-al-wifādati ʿalayka

their success in coming into Your presence,

وَالزِّيَادَةِ مِنْكَ.

Wa-al-ziyādati minka.

and further bounty from You.

فَقُلْتَ تَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ:

Faqulta tabāraka ismuka wataʿālayta:

You said, blessed be Your name and exalted are You:

«مَنْ جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ عَشْرُ أَمْثَالِهَا

«man jāʾa bi-al-ḥasanati falahu ʿashru amthālihā

“Whoever brings a good deed will receive ten like it,

وَمَنْ جَاءَ بِالسَّيِّئَةِ فَلَا يُجْزَى إِلَّا مِثْلَهَا».

Waman jāʾa bi-al-sayyiʾati falā yujzā illā mithlahā».

while whoever brings a bad deed will be repaid only with its like.”

وَقُلْتَ:

Waqulta:

And You said:

«مَثَلُ الَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ أَمْوَالَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

«mathalu alladhīna yunfiqūna amwālahum fī sabīli Allāhi

“Those who spend their wealth in God's cause

كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنْبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ

Kamathali ḥabbatin anbatat sabʿa sanābila

are like a grain that grows seven ears,

فِي كُلِّ سُنْبُلَةٍ مِئَةُ حَبَّةٍ

Fī kulli sunbulatin miʾatu ḥabbatin

with a hundred grains in every ear.

وَاللَّهُ يُضَاعِفُ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ».

Wallāhu yuḍāʿifu liman yashāʾu».

God multiplies for whomever He wills.”

وَقُلْتَ:

Waqulta:

And You said:

«مَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا

«man dhā alladhī yuqriḍu Allāha qarḍan ḥasanan

“Who will lend God a good loan,

فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً».

Fayuḍāʿifahu lahu aḍʿāfan kathīratan».

so that He may multiply it for him many times over?”

وَمَا أَنْزَلْتَ مِنْ نَظَائِرِهِنَّ فِي الْقُرْآنِ

Wamā anzalta min naẓāʾirihinna fī al-qurʾāni

You revealed other passages like these in the Qur’an,

مِنْ تَضَاعِيفِ الْحَسَنَاتِ.

Min taḍāʿīfi al-ḥasanāti.

concerning the multiplication of good deeds.

وَأَنْتَ الَّذِي دَلَلْتَهُمْ بِقَوْلِكَ مِنْ غَيْبِكَ

Wa-anta alladhī dalaltahum biqawlika min ghaybika

Through Your words from the unseen, You guided them,

وَتَرْغِيبِكَ

Watarghībika

and through Your encouragement,

الَّذِي فِيهِ حَظُّهُمْ

Alladhī fīhi ḥaẓẓuhum

in which their own benefit lies,

عَلَى مَا لَوْ سَتَرْتَهُ عَنْهُمْ

ʿalā mā law satartahu ʿanhum

towards what, had You concealed it from them,

لَمْ تُدْرِكْهُ أَبْصَارُهُمْ

Lam tudrik-hu abṣāruhum

their eyes could never have perceived,

وَلَمْ تَعِهِ أَسْمَاعُهُمْ

Walam taʿihi asmāʿuhum

their ears could never have grasped,

وَلَمْ تَلْحَقْهُ أَوْهَامُهُمْ.

Walam talḥaqhu awhāmuhum.

and their imaginations could never have reached.

فَقُلْتَ:

Faqulta:

You said:

«فَاذْكُرُونِي أَذْكُرْكُمْ

«fa-udhkurūnī adhkurkum

“Remember Me, and I will remember you.

وَاشْكُرُوا لِي وَلَا تَكْفُرُونِ».

Wa-ushkurū lī walā takfurūni».

Give thanks to Me, and do not be ungrateful to Me.”

وَقُلْتَ:

Waqulta:

And You said:

«لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ

«laʾin shakartum laʾazīdannakum

“If you give thanks, I will surely give you more;

وَلَئِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ».

Walaʾin kafartum inna ʿadhābī lashadīdun».

but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is indeed severe.”

وَقُلْتَ:

Waqulta:

And You said:

«ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ

«udʿūnī astajib lakum

“Call upon Me; I will answer you.

إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ عَنْ عِبَادَتِي

Inna alladhīna yastakbirūna ʿan ʿibādatī

Those who are too proud to worship Me

سَيَدْخُلُونَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ».

Sayadkhulūna jahannama dākhirīna».

will enter Hell in humiliation.”

فَسَمَّيْتَ دُعَاءَكَ عِبَادَةً،

Fasammayta duʿāʾaka ʿibādatan,

You called praying to You worship,

وَتَرْكَهُ اسْتِكْبَارًا،

Watarkahu istikbāran,

and abandoning it arrogance.

وَتَوَعَّدْتَ عَلَى تَرْكِهِ دُخُولَ جَهَنَّمَ دَاخِرِينَ،

Watawaʿʿadta ʿalā tarkihi dukhūla jahannama dākhirīna,

You warned those who abandon it of entering Hell in humiliation.

فَذَكَرُوكَ بِمَنِّكَ

Fadhakarūka bimannika

Through Your favour, they remembered You;

وَشَكَرُوكَ بِفَضْلِكَ،

Washakarūka bifaḍlika,

through Your grace, they thanked You;

وَدَعَوْكَ بِأَمْرِكَ،

Wadaʿawka biʾamrika,

at Your command, they prayed to You;

وَتَصَدَّقُوا لَكَ طَلَبًا لِمَزِيدِكَ،

Wataṣaddaqū laka ṭalaban limazīdika,

and for Your sake, they gave charity, seeking more from You.

وَفِيهَا كَانَتْ نَجَاتُهُمْ مِنْ غَضَبِكَ،

Wafīhā kānat najātuhum min ghaḍabika,

In these deeds lay their deliverance from Your anger

وَفَوْزُهُمْ بِرِضَاكَ.

Wafawzuhum biriḍāka.

and their success in attaining Your pleasure.

وَلَوْ دَلَّ مَخْلُوقٌ مَخْلُوقًا مِنْ نَفْسِهِ

Walaw dalla makhlūqun makhlūqan min nafsihi

If one created being showed another what he could offer him,

عَلَى مِثْلِ الَّذِي دَلَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ عِبَادَكَ مِنْكَ

ʿalā mithli alladhī dalalta ʿalayhi ʿibādaka minka

as You have shown Your servants what You offer them,

كَانَ مَوْصُوفًا بِالْإِحْسَانِ

Kāna mawṣūfan bi-al-iḥsāni

he would be described as doing good,

وَمَنْعُوتًا بِالِامْتِنَانِ،

Wamanʿūtan bi-al-imtināni,

known for his generosity,

وَمَحْمُودًا بِكُلِّ لِسَانٍ.

Wamaḥmūdan bikulli lisānin.

and praised by every tongue.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ مَا وُجِدَ فِي حَمْدِكَ مَذْهَبٌ،

Falaka al-ḥamdu mā wujida fī ḥamdika madhhabun,

Praise belongs to You as long as any way to praise You can be found,

وَمَا بَقِيَ لِلْحَمْدِ لَفْظٌ تُحْمَدُ بِهِ،

Wamā baqiya li-l-ḥamdi lafẓun tuḥmadu bihi,

as long as any word remains with which to praise You,

وَمَعْنًى يَنْصَرِفُ إِلَيْهِ.

Wamaʿnan yanṣarifu ilayhi.

and any meaning to which praise can turn.

يَا مَنْ تَحَمَّدَ إِلَى عِبَادِهِ بِالْإِحْسَانِ وَالْفَضْلِ،

Yā man taḥammada ilā ʿibādihi bi-al-iḥsāni wa-al-faḍli,

O You who invite Your servants' praise through goodness and generosity,

وَغَمَرَهُمْ بِالْمَنِّ وَالطَّوْلِ،

Waghamarahum bi-al-manni wa-al-ṭawli,

and surround them with favour and bounty:

مَا أَفْشَى فِينَا نِعْمَتَكَ

Mā afshā fīnā niʿmataka

how widely You have spread Your blessing among us,

وَأَسْبَغَ عَلَيْنَا مِنَّتَكَ،

Wa-asbagha ʿalaynā minnataka,

how fully You have poured Your favour upon us,

وَأَخَصَّنَا بِبِرِّكَ!

Wa-akhaṣṣanā bibirrika!

and how specially You have shown us Your kindness!

هَدَيْتَنَا لِدِينِكَ الَّذِي اصْطَفَيْتَ،

Hadaytanā lidīnika alladhī iṣṭafayta,

You guided us to the religion You chose,

وَمِلَّتِكَ الَّتِي ارْتَضَيْتَ،

Wamillatika allatī irtaḍayta,

the faith You approved,

وَسَبِيلِكَ الَّذِي سَهَّلْتَ،

Wasabīlika alladhī sahhalta,

and the path You made easy.

وَبَصَّرْتَنَا الزُّلْفَةَ لَدَيْكَ

Wabaṣṣartanā al-zulfata ladayka

You showed us how to draw near to You

وَالْوُصُولَ إِلَى كَرَامَتِكَ.

Wa-al-wuṣūla ilā karāmatika.

and reach the honour You bestow.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَنْتَ جَعَلْتَ مِنْ صَفَايَا تِلْكَ الْوَظَائِفِ

Allāhumma wa-anta jaʿalta min ṣafāyā tilka al-waẓāʾifi

O God, among the choicest of those duties

وَخَصَائِصِ تِلْكَ الْفُرُوضِ

Wakhaṣāʾiṣi tilka al-furūḍi

and the most distinctive of those obligations,

شَهْرَ رَمَضَانَ

Shahra ramaḍāna

You established the month of Ramadan,

الَّذِي اخْتَصَصْتَهُ مِنْ سَائِرِ الشُّهُورِ،

Alladhī ikhtaṣaṣtahu min sāʾiri al-shuhūri,

setting it apart from all other months,

وَتَخَيَّرْتَهُ مِنْ جَمِيعِ الْأَزْمِنَةِ وَالدُّهُورِ،

Watakhayyartahu min jamīʿi al-azminati wa-al-duhūri,

choosing it from all times and ages,

وَآثَرْتَهُ عَلَى كُلِّ أَوْقَاتِ السَّنَةِ

Wa-āthartahu ʿalā kulli awqāti al-sanati

and favouring it over every other time of the year

بِمَا أَنْزَلْتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ وَالنُّورِ،

Bimā anzalta fīhi mina al-qurʾāni wa-al-nūri,

through the Qur’an and the light You sent down during it,

وَضَاعَفْتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْإِيمَانِ،

Waḍāʿafta fīhi mina al-īmāni,

the faith You multiplied during it,

وَفَرَضْتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الصِّيَامِ،

Wafaraḍta fīhi mina al-ṣiyāmi,

the fasting You prescribed during it,

وَرَغَّبْتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْقِيَامِ،

Waraghghabta fīhi mina al-qiyāmi,

the prayer at night You encouraged during it,

وَأَجْلَلْتَ فِيهِ مِنْ لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

Wa-ajlalta fīhi min laylati al-qadri

and the greatness You gave within it to the Night of Decree,

الَّتِي هِيَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ،

Allatī hiya khayrun min alfi shahrin,

which is better than a thousand months.

ثُمَّ آثَرْتَنَا بِهِ عَلَى سَائِرِ الْأُمَمِ

Thumma āthartanā bihi ʿalā sāʾiri al-umami

Then through it You favoured us above the other communities,

وَاصْطَفَيْتَنَا بِفَضْلِهِ دُونَ أَهْلِ الْمِلَلِ،

Wa-iṣṭafaytanā bifaḍlihi dūna ahli al-milali,

choosing us for its bounty from among the people of the faiths.

فَصُمْنَا بِأَمْرِكَ نَهَارَهُ،

Faṣumnā biʾamrika nahārahu,

At Your command we fasted through its days,

وَقُمْنَا بِعَوْنِكَ لَيْلَهُ

Waqumnā biʿawnika laylahu

and with Your help we stood in prayer through its nights,

مُتَعَرِّضِينَ بِصِيَامِهِ وَقِيَامِهِ

Mutaʿarriḍīna biṣiyāmihi waqiyāmihi

seeking through its fasting and night prayer

لِمَا عَرَّضْتَنَا لَهُ مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ،

Limā ʿarraḍtanā lahu min raḥmatika,

the mercy You had made available to us,

وَتَسَبَّبْنَا إِلَيْهِ مِنْ مَثُوبَتِكَ.

Watasabbabnā ilayhi min mathūbatika.

and the reward towards which we had sought a way.

وَأَنْتَ الْمَلِيءُ بِمَا رُغِبَ فِيهِ إِلَيْكَ،

Wa-anta al-malīʾu bimā rughiba fīhi ilayka,

You are fully able to grant whatever is sought from You,

الْجَوَادُ بِمَا سُئِلْتَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ،

Al-jawādu bimā suʾilta min faḍlika,

generous with whatever is asked of Your bounty,

الْقَرِيبُ إِلَى مَنْ حَاوَلَ قُرْبَكَ.

Al-qarību ilā man ḥāwala qurbaka.

and near to anyone who seeks Your nearness.

وَقَدْ أَقَامَ فِينَا هَٰذَا الشَّهْرُ مُقَامَ حَمْدٍ

Waqad aqāma fīnā hādhā al-shahru muqāma ḥamdin

This month has stayed among us as one worthy of praise,

وَصَحِبَنَا صُحْبَةَ مَبْرُورٍ،

Waṣaḥibanā ṣuḥbata mabrūrin,

and kept us company as a kindly companion.

وَأَرْبَحَنَا أَفْضَلَ أَرْبَاحِ الْعَالَمِينَ،

Wa-arbaḥanā afḍala arbāḥi al-ʿālamīna,

It has brought us the finest gains that any people could receive.

ثُمَّ قَدْ فَارَقَنَا عِنْدَ تَمَامِ وَقْتِهِ

Thumma qad fāraqanā ʿinda tamāmi waqtihi

Now it has left us as its time is completed,

وَانْقِطَاعِ مُدَّتِهِ

Wa-inqiṭāʿi muddatihi

its span comes to an end,

وَوَفَاءِ عَدَدِهِ،

Wawafāʾi ʿadadihi,

and its days reach their full count.

فَنَحْنُ مُوَدِّعُوهُ وِدَاعَ مَنْ عَزَّ فِرَاقُهُ عَلَيْنَا

Fanaḥnu muwaddiʿūhu widāʿa man ʿazza firāquhu ʿalaynā

We bid it farewell as one whose parting is painful to us,

وَغَمَّنَا وَأَوْحَشَنَا انْصِرَافُهُ عَنَّا

Waghammanā wa-awḥashanā inṣirāfuhu ʿannā

whose departure leaves us grieving and lonely,

وَلَزِمَنَا لَهُ الذِّمَامُ الْمَحْفُوظُ،

Walazimanā lahu al-dhimāmu al-maḥfūẓu,

to whom we owe a loyalty that must be kept,

وَالْحُرْمَةُ الْمَرْعِيَّةُ،

Wa-al-ḥurmatu al-marʿiyyatu,

a sanctity that must be honoured,

وَالْحَقُّ الْمَقْضِيُّ،

Wa-al-ḥaqqu al-maqḍiyyu,

and a right that must be fulfilled.

فَنَحْنُ قَائِلُونَ:

Fanaḥnu qāʾilūna:

So we say:

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا شَهْرَ اللَّهِ الْأَكْبَرَ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka yā shahra Allāhi al-akbara,

Peace be upon you, O greatest month of God,

وَيَا عِيدَ أَوْلِيَائِهِ.

Wayā ʿīda awliyāʾihi.

O festival of His friends.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَكْرَمَ مَصْحُوبٍ مِنَ الْأَوْقَاتِ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka yā akrama maṣḥūbin mina al-awqāti,

Peace be upon you, most honoured companion among the seasons,

وَيَا خَيْرَ شَهْرٍ فِي الْأَيَّامِ وَالسَّاعَاتِ.

Wayā khayra shahrin fī al-ayyāmi wa-al-sāʿāti.

best of months in all its days and hours.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ شَهْرٍ قَرُبَتْ فِيهِ الْآمَالُ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min shahrin qarubat fīhi al-āmālu

Peace be upon you, a month in which hopes came near

وَنُشِرَتْ فِيهِ الْأَعْمَالُ.

Wanushirat fīhi al-aʿmālu.

and deeds were spread before God.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ قَرِينٍ جَلَّ قَدْرُهُ مَوْجُودًا،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min qarīnin jalla qadruhu mawjūdan,

Peace be upon you, a companion of great worth while present,

وَأَفْجَعَ فَقْدُهُ مَفْقُودًا،

Wa-afjaʿa faqduhu mafqūdan,

whose loss brings grief when absent,

وَمَرْجُوٍّ آلَمَ فِرَاقُهُ.

Wamarjuwwin ālama firāquhu.

one eagerly awaited whose parting causes pain.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَلِيفٍ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min alīfin

Peace be upon you, a beloved companion

آنَسَ مُقْبِلًا فَسَرَّ

Ānasa muqbilan fasarra

whose arrival brought comfort and joy,

وَأَوْحَشَ مُنْقَضِيًا فَمَضَّ.

Wa-awḥasha munqaḍiyan famaḍḍa.

whose departure brings loneliness and sorrow.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ مُجَاوِرٍ رَقَّتْ فِيهِ الْقُلُوبُ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min mujāwirin raqqat fīhi al-qulūbu,

Peace be upon you, a neighbour during whose stay hearts softened

وَقَلَّتْ فِيهِ الذُّنُوبُ.

Waqallat fīhi al-dhunūbu.

and sins grew fewer.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ نَاصِرٍ أَعَانَ عَلَى الشَّيْطَانِ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min nāṣirin aʿāna ʿalā al-shayṭāni

Peace be upon you, a supporter who helped us against Satan,

وَصَاحِبٍ سَهَّلَ سُبُلَ الْإِحْسَانِ.

Waṣāḥibin sahhala subula al-iḥsāni.

a companion who made the paths of goodness easy.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مَا أَكْثَرَ عُتَقَاءَ اللَّهِ فِيكَ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka mā akthara ʿutaqāʾa Allāhi fīka

Peace be upon you! How many God has set free during you!

وَمَا أَسْعَدَ مَنْ رَعَى حُرْمَتَكَ بِكَ!

Wamā asʿada man raʿā ḥurmataka bika!

How blessed through you are those who honour your sacredness!

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مَا كَانَ أَمْحَاكَ لِلذُّنُوبِ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka mā kāna amḥāka li-l-dhunūbi,

Peace be upon you! How thoroughly you have erased sins,

وَأَسْتَرَكَ لِأَنْوَاعِ الْعُيُوبِ!

Wa-astaraka liʾanwāʿi al-ʿuyūbi!

and covered every kind of fault!

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مَا كَانَ أَطْوَلَكَ عَلَى الْمُجْرِمِينَ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka mā kāna aṭwalaka ʿalā al-mujrimīna,

Peace be upon you! How long you seemed to those who did wrong,

وَأَهْيَبَكَ فِي صُدُورِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ!

Wa-ahyabaka fī ṣudūri al-muʾminīna!

and how awe-inspiring you were in the hearts of believers!

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ شَهْرٍ لَا تُنَافِسُهُ الْأَيَّامُ.

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min shahrin lā tunāfisuhu al-ayyāmu.

Peace be upon you, a month no other days can rival.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ شَهْرٍ هُوَ مِنْ كُلِّ أَمْرٍ سَلَامٌ.

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min shahrin huwa min kulli amrin salāmun.

Peace be upon you, a month that is peace in every respect.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ غَيْرَ كَرِيهِ الْمُصَاحَبَةِ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka ghayra karīhi al-muṣāḥabati

Peace be upon you, whose company was never unwelcome

وَلَا ذَمِيمِ الْمُلَابَسَةِ.

Walā dhamīmi al-mulābasati.

and whose companionship was never blameworthy.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ كَمَا وَفَدْتَ عَلَيْنَا بِالْبَرَكَاتِ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka kamā wafadta ʿalaynā bi-al-barakāti,

Peace be upon you, as you came to us with blessings

وَغَسَلْتَ عَنَّا دَنَسَ الْخَطِيئَاتِ.

Waghasalta ʿannā danasa al-khaṭīʾāti.

and washed away the stain of our sins.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ غَيْرَ مُوَدَّعٍ بَرَمًا

Al-salāmu ʿalayka ghayra muwaddaʿin baraman

Peace be upon you! We do not bid you farewell out of impatience,

وَلَا مَتْرُوكٍ صِيَامُهُ سَأَمًا.

Walā matrūkin ṣiyāmuhu saʾaman.

nor abandon your fasting out of weariness.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ مَطْلُوبٍ قَبْلَ وَقْتِهِ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka min maṭlūbin qabla waqtihi

Peace be upon you, longed for before your time arrives,

وَمَحْزُونٍ عَلَيْهِ قَبْلَ فَوْتِهِ.

Wamaḥzūnin ʿalayhi qabla fawtihi.

and mourned before your passing.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ كَمْ مِنْ سُوءٍ صُرِفَ بِكَ عَنَّا

Al-salāmu ʿalayka kam min sūʾin ṣurifa bika ʿannā

Peace be upon you! How much harm was turned away from us through you,

وَكَمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ أُفِيضَ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا.

Wakam min khayrin ufīḍa bika ʿalaynā.

and how much good was poured upon us through you!

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka waʿalā laylati al-qadri

Peace be upon you and upon the Night of Decree,

الَّتِي هِيَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ.

Allatī hiya khayrun min alfi shahrin.

which is better than a thousand months.

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ مَا كَانَ أَحْرَصَنَا بِالْأَمْسِ عَلَيْكَ

Al-salāmu ʿalayka mā kāna aḥraṣanā bi-al-amsi ʿalayka

Peace be upon you! How eagerly we sought you yesterday,

وَأَشَدَّ شَوْقَنَا غَدًا إِلَيْكَ.

Wa-ashadda shawqanā ghadan ilayka.

and how deeply we will yearn for you tomorrow!

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى فَضْلِكَ الَّذِي حُرِمْنَاهُ،

Al-salāmu ʿalayka waʿalā faḍlika alladhī ḥurimnāhu,

Peace be upon you and upon your bounty, now withheld from us,

وَعَلَى مَاضٍ مِنْ بَرَكَاتِكَ سُلِبْنَاهُ.

Waʿalā māḍin min barakātika sulibnāhu.

and upon your blessings now past, which we have lost.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا أَهْلُ هَٰذَا الشَّهْرِ الَّذِي شَرَّفْتَنَا بِهِ

Allāhumma innā ahlu hādhā al-shahri alladhī sharraftanā bihi

O God, we belong to this month through which You have honoured us,

وَوَفَّقْتَنَا بِمَنِّكَ لَهُ

Wawaffaqtanā bimannika lahu

and which You have enabled us, through Your grace, to observe,

حِينَ جَهِلَ الْأَشْقِيَاءُ وَقْتَهُ

Ḥīna jahila al-ashqiyāʾu waqtahu

while the wretched failed to recognise its time

وَحُرِمُوا لِشَقَائِهِمْ فَضْلَهُ.

Waḥurimū lishaqāʾihim faḍlahu.

and, through their wretchedness, were deprived of its bounty.

أَنْتَ وَلِيُّ مَا آثَرْتَنَا بِهِ مِنْ مَعْرِفَتِهِ،

Anta waliyyu mā āthartanā bihi min maʿrifatihi,

You are the source of the understanding of it with which You favoured us,

وَهَدَيْتَنَا مِنْ سُنَّتِهِ،

Wahadaytanā min sunnatihi,

and of the practice of it to which You guided us.

وَقَدْ تَوَلَّيْنَا بِتَوْفِيقِكَ صِيَامَهُ وَقِيَامَهُ

Waqad tawallaynā bitawfīqika ṣiyāmahu waqiyāmahu

Through Your enabling grace, we undertook its fasting and night prayer,

عَلَى تَقْصِيرٍ،

ʿalā taqṣīrin,

though we fell short,

وَأَدَّيْنَا فِيهِ قَلِيلًا مِنْ كَثِيرٍ.

Wa-addaynā fīhi qalīlan min kathīrin.

and fulfilled only a little of the much that was due.

اللَّهُمَّ فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ إِقْرَارًا بِالْإِسَاءَةِ

Allāhumma falaka al-ḥamdu iqrāran bi-al-isāʾati

O God, praise belongs to You as we confess our wrongdoing

وَاعْتِرَافًا بِالْإِضَاعَةِ،

Wa-iʿtirāfan bi-al-iḍāʿati,

and acknowledge what we have neglected.

وَلَكَ مِنْ قُلُوبِنَا عَقْدُ النَّدَمِ،

Walaka min qulūbinā ʿaqdu al-nadami,

For You, our hearts are bound in remorse,

وَمِنْ أَلْسِنَتِنَا صِدْقُ الِاعْتِذَارِ،

Wamin alsinatinā ṣidqu al-iʿtidhāri,

and our tongues offer a sincere apology.

فَأْجُرْنَا عَلَى مَا أَصَابَنَا فِيهِ مِنَ التَّفْرِيطِ

Faʾjurnā ʿalā mā aṣābanā fīhi mina al-tafrīṭi

Grant us, despite the neglect into which we fell during it,

أَجْرًا نَسْتَدْرِكُ بِهِ الْفَضْلَ الْمَرْغُوبَ فِيهِ،

Ajran nastadriku bihi al-faḍla al-marghūba fīhi,

a reward by which we may recover the bounty we desire,

وَنَعْتَاضُ بِهِ مِنْ أَنْوَاعِ الذُّخْرِ الْمَحْرُوصِ عَلَيْهِ،

Wanaʿtāḍu bihi min anwāʿi al-dhukhri al-maḥrūṣi ʿalayhi,

and receive in compensation the stores of goodness we long to secure.

وَأَوْجِبْ لَنَا عُذْرَكَ

Wa-awjib lanā ʿudhraka

Grant us Your pardon

عَلَى مَا قَصَّرْنَا فِيهِ مِنْ حَقِّكَ،

ʿalā mā qaṣṣarnā fīhi min ḥaqqika,

for our failure to fulfil Your right during it.

وَابْلُغْ بِأَعْمَارِنَا مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِينَا

Wa-ublugh biʾaʿmārinā mā bayna aydīnā

Extend our lives to reach what lies ahead of us,

مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ الْمُقْبِلِ،

Min shahri ramaḍāna al-muqbili,

the coming month of Ramadan.

فَإِذَا بَلَّغْتَنَاهُ

Fa-idhā ballaghtanāhu

When You bring us to it,

فَأَعِنَّا عَلَى تَنَاوُلِ مَا أَنْتَ أَهْلُهُ مِنَ الْعِبَادَةِ

Fa-aʿinnā ʿalā tanāwuli mā anta ahluhu mina al-ʿibādati

help us attain the worship of which You are worthy,

وَأَدِّنَا إِلَى الْقِيَامِ بِمَا يَسْتَحِقُّهُ مِنَ الطَّاعَةِ

Wa-addinā ilā al-qiyāmi bimā yastaḥiqquhu mina al-ṭāʿati

and lead us to fulfil the obedience that the month deserves.

وَأَجْرِ لَنَا مِنْ صَالِحِ الْعَمَلِ

Wa-ajri lanā min ṣāliḥi al-ʿamali

Let righteous deeds flow from us,

مَا يَكُونُ دَرَكًا لِحَقِّكَ

Mā yakūnu darakan liḥaqqika

enough to make up what we owe You

فِي الشَّهْرَيْنِ مِنْ شُهُورِ الدَّهْرِ.

Fī al-shahrayni min shuhūri al-dahri.

in these two months among the months of time.

اللَّهُمَّ وَمَا أَلْمَمْنَا بِهِ فِي شَهْرِنَا هَٰذَا مِنْ لَمَمٍ أَوْ إِثْمٍ،

Allāhumma wamā almamnā bihi fī shahrinā hādhā min lamamin aw ithmin,

O God, whatever lesser failing or sin we approached in this month,

أَوْ وَاقَعْنَا فِيهِ مِنْ ذَنْبٍ

Aw wāqaʿnā fīhi min dhanbin

whatever offence we committed during it,

وَاكْتَسَبْنَا فِيهِ مِنْ خَطِيئَةٍ

Wa-iktasabnā fīhi min khaṭīʾatin

and whatever wrongdoing we brought upon ourselves,

عَلَى تَعَمُّدٍ مِنَّا،

ʿalā taʿammudin minnā,

whether deliberately

أَوْ عَلَى نِسْيَانٍ

Aw ʿalā nisyānin

or through forgetfulness,

ظَلَمْنَا فِيهِ أَنْفُسَنَا،

Ẓalamnā fīhi anfusanā,

wronging ourselves

أَوِ انْتَهَكْنَا بِهِ حُرْمَةً مِنْ غَيْرِنَا،

Awi intahaknā bihi ḥurmatan min ghayrinā,

or violating the inviolable rights of another:

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاسْتُرْنَا بِسِتْرِكَ،

Wa-usturnā bisitrika,

cover us with Your protection,

وَاعْفُ عَنَّا بِعَفْوِكَ،

Wa-uʿfu ʿannā biʿafwika,

and pardon us through Your pardon.

وَلَا تَنْصِبْنَا فِيهِ لِأَعْيُنِ الشَّامِتِينَ،

Walā tanṣibnā fīhi liʾaʿyuni al-shāmitīna,

Do not expose us for it to the eyes of those who would gloat,

وَلَا تَبْسُطْ عَلَيْنَا فِيهِ أَلْسُنَ الطَّاعِنِينَ،

Walā tabsuṭ ʿalaynā fīhi alsuna al-ṭāʿinīna,

or give those who would malign us free rein with their tongues.

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنَا بِمَا يَكُونُ حِطَّةً وَكَفَّارَةً

Wa-istaʿmilnā bimā yakūnu ḥiṭṭatan wakaffāratan

Set us to deeds that will remove and atone for

لِمَا أَنْكَرْتَ مِنَّا فِيهِ

Limā ankarta minnā fīhi

what You disapproved of in us during it,

بِرَأْفَتِكَ الَّتِي لَا تَنْفَدُ،

Biraʾfatika allatī lā tanfadu,

through Your tenderness that never runs out,

وَفَضْلِكَ الَّذِي لَا يَنْقُصُ.

Wafaḍlika alladhī lā yanquṣu.

and Your bounty that never diminishes.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاجْبُرْ مُصِيبَتَنَا بِشَهْرِنَا

Wa-ujbur muṣībatanā bishahrinā

Heal the loss we feel at our month's departure,

وَبَارِكْ فِي يَوْمِ عِيدِنَا وَفِطْرِنَا

Wabārik fī yawmi ʿīdinā wafiṭrinā

and bless the day of our festival and the ending of our fast.

وَاجْعَلْهُ مِنْ خَيْرِ يَوْمٍ مَرَّ عَلَيْنَا

Wa-ijʿalhu min khayri yawmin marra ʿalaynā

Make it one of the best days we have ever known,

أَجْلَبِهِ لِعَفْوٍ،

Ajlabihi liʿafwin,

the richest in bringing pardon,

وَأَمْحَاهُ لِذَنْبٍ،

Wa-amḥāhu lidhanbin,

and the most thorough in erasing sin.

وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا مَا خَفِيَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِنَا وَمَا عَلَنَ.

Wa-ighfir lanā mā khafiya min dhunūbinā wamā ʿalana.

Forgive our sins, both hidden and known.

اللَّهُمَّ اسْلَخْنَا بِانْسِلَاخِ هَٰذَا الشَّهْرِ مِنْ خَطَايَانَا

Allāhumma islakhnā binsilākhi hādhā al-shahri min khaṭāyānā

O God, as this month slips away, strip us free of our sins,

وَأَخْرِجْنَا بِخُرُوجِهِ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِنَا

Wa-akhrijnā bikhurūjihi min sayyiʾātinā

and as it departs, bring us out of our misdeeds.

وَاجْعَلْنَا مِنْ أَسْعَدِ أَهْلِهِ بِهِ

Wa-ijʿalnā min asʿadi ahlihi bihi

Make us among those it has most blessed,

وَأَجْزَلِهِمْ قِسْمًا فِيهِ

Wa-ajzalihim qisman fīhi

those with the greatest share in it,

وَأَوْفَرِهِمْ حَظًّا مِنْهُ.

Wa-awfarihim ḥaẓẓan minhu.

and those who gain the fullest portion from it.

اللَّهُمَّ وَمَنْ رَعَى حَقَّ هَٰذَا الشَّهْرِ حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهِ

Allāhumma waman raʿā ḥaqqa hādhā al-shahri ḥaqqa riʿāyatihi

O God, whoever has observed this month's right as it deserves,

وَحَفِظَ حُرْمَتَهُ حَقَّ حِفْظِهَا

Waḥafiẓa ḥurmatahu ḥaqqa ḥifẓihā

guarded its sacredness as it deserves,

وَقَامَ بِحُدُودِهِ حَقَّ قِيَامِهَا،

Waqāma biḥudūdihi ḥaqqa qiyāmihā,

upheld its limits as they deserve,

وَاتَّقَى ذُنُوبَهُ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهَا

Wa-ittaqā dhunūbahu ḥaqqa tuqātihā

and avoided its sins with due care,

أَوْ تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيْكَ بِقُرْبَةٍ أَوْجَبَتْ رِضَاكَ لَهُ

Aw taqarraba ilayka biqurbatin awjabat riḍāka lahu

or drawn near to You with an act that won Your pleasure

وَعَطَفَتْ رَحْمَتَكَ عَلَيْهِ،

Waʿaṭafat raḥmataka ʿalayhi,

and turned Your mercy towards him:

فَهَبْ لَنَا مِثْلَهُ مِنْ وُجْدِكَ

Fahab lanā mithlahu min wujdika

grant us the same out of Your abundance,

وَأَعْطِنَا أَضْعَافَهُ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

Wa-aʿṭinā aḍʿāfahu min faḍlika

and give us many times more out of Your bounty.

فَإِنَّ فَضْلَكَ لَا يَغِيضُ

Fa-inna faḍlaka lā yaghīḍu

Your bounty never recedes,

وَإِنَّ خَزَائِنَكَ لَا تَنْقُصُ، بَلْ تَفِيضُ

Wa-inna khazāʾinaka lā tanquṣu, bal tafīḍu

Your treasuries never diminish, but overflow,

وَإِنَّ مَعَادِنَ إِحْسَانِكَ لَا تَفْنَى،

Wa-inna maʿādina iḥsānika lā tafnā,

and the sources of Your goodness never run dry.

وَإِنَّ عَطَاءَكَ لَلْعَطَاءُ الْمُهَنَّأُ.

Wa-inna ʿaṭāʾaka la-l-ʿaṭāʾu al-muhannaʾu.

Your gift is truly a gift to be enjoyed without trouble.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاكْتُبْ لَنَا مِثْلَ أُجُورِ مَنْ صَامَهُ

Wa-uktub lanā mithla ujūri man ṣāmahu

Record for us rewards like those of everyone who fasts during it

أَوْ تَعَبَّدَ لَكَ فِيهِ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.

Aw taʿabbada laka fīhi ilā yawmi al-qiyāmati.

or worships You during it until the Day of Resurrection.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ فِي يَوْمِ فِطْرِنَا

Allāhumma innā natūbu ilayka fī yawmi fiṭrinā

O God, we turn to You in repentance on the day our fast ends,

الَّذِي جَعَلْتَهُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ عِيدًا وَسُرُورًا،

Alladhī jaʿaltahu li-l-muʾminīna ʿīdan wasurūran,

which You made a festival and a joy for believers,

وَلِأَهْلِ مِلَّتِكَ مَجْمَعًا مُحْتَشَدًا

Waliʾahli millatika majmaʿan muḥtashadan

and a gathering that brings together the people of Your faith.

مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ أَذْنَبْنَاهُ،

Min kulli dhanbin adhnabnāhu,

We repent of every sin we have committed,

أَوْ سُوءٍ أَسْلَفْنَاهُ،

Aw sūʾin aslafnāhu,

every wrong we have sent ahead of us,

أَوْ خَاطِرِ شَرٍّ أَضْمَرْنَاهُ،

Aw khāṭiri sharrin aḍmarnāhu,

and every evil thought we have harboured,

تَوْبَةَ مَنْ لَا يَنْطَوِي عَلَى رُجُوعٍ إِلَى ذَنْبٍ

Tawbata man lā yanṭawī ʿalā rujūʿin ilā dhanbin

with the repentance of one who has no hidden intent to return to sin

وَلَا يَعُودُ بَعْدَهَا فِي خَطِيئَةٍ،

Walā yaʿūdu baʿdahā fī khaṭīʾatin,

and does not go back to wrongdoing afterwards;

تَوْبَةً نَصُوحًا خَلَصَتْ مِنَ الشَّكِّ وَالِارْتِيَابِ،

Tawbatan naṣūḥan khalaṣat mina al-shakki wa-al-irtiyābi,

a sincere repentance, free from doubt and uncertainty.

فَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنَّا

Fataqabbalhā minnā

Accept it from us,

وَارْضَ عَنَّا

Wa-irḍa ʿannā

be pleased with us,

وَثَبِّتْنَا عَلَيْهَا.

Wathabbitnā ʿalayhā.

and keep us steadfast in it.

اللَّهُمَّ ارْزُقْنَا خَوْفَ عِقَابِ الْوَعِيدِ،

Allāhumma urzuqnā khawfa ʿiqābi al-waʿīdi,

O God, grant us fear of the punishment You have warned of,

وَشَوْقَ ثَوَابِ الْمَوْعُودِ

Washawqa thawābi al-mawʿūdi

and longing for the reward You have promised,

حَتَّى نَجِدَ لَذَّةَ مَا نَدْعُوكَ بِهِ،

Ḥattā najida ladhdhata mā nadʿūka bihi,

until we feel the sweetness of what we ask You for

وَكَأْبَةَ مَا نَسْتَجِيرُكَ مِنْهُ.

Wakaʾbata mā nastajīruka minhu.

and the sorrow of what we seek Your protection from.

وَاجْعَلْنَا عِنْدَكَ مِنَ التَّوَّابِينَ

Wa-ijʿalnā ʿindaka mina al-tawwābīna

Make us, in Your sight, among those who turn back to You,

الَّذِينَ أَوْجَبْتَ لَهُمْ مَحَبَّتَكَ،

Alladhīna awjabta lahum maḥabbataka,

those to whom You have promised Your love,

وَقَبِلْتَ مِنْهُمْ مُرَاجَعَةَ طَاعَتِكَ،

Waqabilta minhum murājaʿata ṭāʿatika,

and whose return to obedience You have accepted,

يَا أَعْدَلَ الْعَادِلِينَ.

Yā aʿdala al-ʿādilīna.

O Most Just of all who act with justice.

اللَّهُمَّ تَجَاوَزْ عَنْ آبَائِنَا وَأُمَّهَاتِنَا

Allāhumma tajāwaz ʿan ābāʾinā wa-ummahātinā

O God, pardon our fathers and mothers

وَأَهْلِ دِينِنَا جَمِيعًا

Wa-ahli dīninā jamīʿan

and all the people of our religion,

مَنْ سَلَفَ مِنْهُمْ

Man salafa minhum

those who have gone before

وَمَنْ غَبَرَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ.

Waman ghabara ilā yawmi al-qiyāmati.

and those who remain, until the Day of Resurrection.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّنَا وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin nabiyyinā wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad, our Prophet, and his family,

كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى مَلَائِكَتِكَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ.

Kamā ṣallayta ʿalā malāʾikatika al-muqarrabīna.

as You have blessed Your angels brought near to You.

وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ،

Waṣalli ʿalayhi wa-ālihi,

Bless him and his family,

كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِكَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ،

Kamā ṣallayta ʿalā anbiyāʾika al-mursalīna,

as You have blessed Your prophets sent as messengers.

وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ،

Waṣalli ʿalayhi wa-ālihi,

Bless him and his family,

كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى عِبَادِكَ الصَّالِحِينَ،

Kamā ṣallayta ʿalā ʿibādika al-ṣāliḥīna,

as You have blessed Your righteous servants,

وَأَفْضَلَ مِنْ ذَٰلِكَ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ،

Wa-afḍala min dhālika yā rabba al-ʿālamīna,

and more greatly still, O Lord of all the worlds,

صَلَاةً تَبْلُغُنَا بَرَكَتُهَا،

Ṣalātan tablughunā barakatuhā,

with a blessing whose grace reaches us,

وَيَنَالُنَا نَفْعُهَا،

Wayanālunā nafʿuhā,

whose benefit comes to us,

وَيُسْتَجَابُ لَهَا دُعَاؤُنَا،

Wayustajābu lahā duʿāʾunā,

and through which our prayer is answered.

إِنَّكَ أَكْرَمُ مَنْ رُغِبَ إِلَيْهِ

Innaka akramu man rughiba ilayhi

You are the most generous of all who are approached,

وَأَكْفَى مَنْ تُوُكِّلَ عَلَيْهِ

Wa-akfā man tuwukkila ʿalayhi

the most sufficient of all who are relied upon,

وَأَعْطَى مَنْ سُئِلَ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ،

Wa-aʿṭā man suʾila min faḍlihi,

and the most giving of all who are asked of their bounty.

وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.

You have power over all things.

Prayer 46

فِي يَوْمِ الْفِطْرِ وَيَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ

Fī yawmi al-fiṭri wayawmi al-jumuʿati

On the day of Eid al-Fitr and on Friday

يَا مَنْ يَرْحَمُ مَنْ لَا يَرْحَمُهُ الْعِبَادُ،

Yā man yarḥamu man lā yarḥamuhu al-ʿibādu,

O You who show mercy to those to whom people show no mercy,

وَيَا مَنْ يَقْبَلُ مَنْ لَا تَقْبَلُهُ الْبِلَادُ،

Wayā man yaqbalu man lā taqbaluhu al-bilādu,

who welcome those whom no land will welcome,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يَحْتَقِرُ أَهْلَ الْحَاجَةِ إِلَيْهِ،

Wayā man lā yaḥtaqiru ahla al-ḥājati ilayhi,

who never despise those in need of You,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يُخَيِّبُ الْمُلِحِّينَ عَلَيْهِ،

Wayā man lā yukhayyibu al-muliḥḥīna ʿalayhi,

who never disappoint those who persist in asking You,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يَجْبَهُ بِالرَّدِّ أَهْلَ الدَّالَّةِ عَلَيْهِ،

Wayā man lā yajbahu bi-al-raddi ahla al-dāllati ʿalayhi,

who never meet those who trust in Your affection with a harsh refusal,

وَيَا مَنْ يَجْتَبِي صَغِيرَ مَا يُتْحَفُ بِهِ،

Wayā man yajtabī ṣaghīra mā yutḥafu bihi,

who graciously accept the smallest gift offered to You,

وَيَشْكُرُ يَسِيرَ مَا يُعْمَلُ لَهُ،

Wayashkuru yasīra mā yuʿmalu lahu,

and appreciate the least that is done for You;

وَيَا مَنْ يَشْكُرُ عَلَى الْقَلِيلِ،

Wayā man yashkuru ʿalā al-qalīli,

O You who give thanks for little

وَيُجَازِي بِالْجَلِيلِ،

Wayujāzī bi-al-jalīli,

and repay it with much,

وَيَا مَنْ يَدْنُو إِلَى مَنْ دَنَا مِنْهُ،

Wayā man yadnū ilā man danā minhu,

who draw near to those who approach You,

وَيَا مَنْ يَدْعُو إِلَى نَفْسِهِ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ عَنْهُ،

Wayā man yadʿū ilā nafsihi man adbara ʿanhu,

who call back to Yourself those who turn away,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يُغَيِّرُ النِّعْمَةَ،

Wayā man lā yughayyiru al-niʿmata,

who do not withdraw Your blessing,

وَلَا يُبَادِرُ بِالنَّقِمَةِ،

Walā yubādiru bi-al-naqimati,

and do not hasten to punish,

وَيَا مَنْ يُثْمِرُ الْحَسَنَةَ حَتَّى يُنْمِيَهَا،

Wayā man yuthmiru al-ḥasanata ḥattā yunmiyahā,

who make a good deed bear fruit until it grows,

وَيَتَجَاوَزُ عَنِ السَّيِّئَةِ حَتَّى يُعَفِّيَهَا.

Wayatajāwazu ʿani al-sayyiʾati ḥattā yuʿaffiyahā.

and overlook a bad deed until You erase it:

انْصَرَفَتِ الْآمَالُ دُونَ مَدَى كَرَمِكَ بِالْحَاجَاتِ

Inṣarafati al-āmālu dūna madā karamika bi-al-ḥājāti

hopes return with their needs fulfilled, far short of Your generosity's reach.

وَامْتَلَأَتْ بِفَيْضِ جُودِكَ أَوْعِيَةُ الطَّلِبَاتِ،

Wa-imtalaʾat bifayḍi jūdika awʿiyatu al-ṭalibāti,

The vessels of requests overflow with Your generosity,

وَتَفَسَّخَتْ دُونَ بُلُوغِ نَعْتِكَ الصِّفَاتُ.

Watafassakhat dūna bulūghi naʿtika al-ṣifātu.

while descriptions fall apart before they can describe You.

فَلَكَ الْعُلُوُّ الْأَعْلَى فَوْقَ كُلِّ عَالٍ،

Falaka al-ʿuluwwu al-aʿlā fawqa kulli ʿālin,

Yours is the highest exaltation, above all that is high,

وَالْجَلَالُ الْأَمْجَدُ فَوْقَ كُلِّ جَلَالٍ.

Wa-al-jalālu al-amjadu fawqa kulli jalālin.

and the most glorious majesty, above every majesty.

كُلُّ جَلِيلٍ عِنْدَكَ صَغِيرٌ،

Kullu jalīlin ʿindaka ṣaghīrun,

Everything great is small before You,

وَكُلُّ شَرِيفٍ فِي جَنْبِ شَرَفِكَ حَقِيرٌ.

Wakullu sharīfin fī janbi sharafika ḥaqīrun.

and everything noble is lowly beside Your nobility.

خَابَ الْوَافِدُونَ عَلَى غَيْرِكَ،

Khāba al-wāfidūna ʿalā ghayrika,

Those who go to anyone else return disappointed;

وَخَسِرَ الْمُتَعَرِّضُونَ إِلَّا لَكَ،

Wakhasira al-mutaʿarriḍūna illā laka,

those who seek favour anywhere but with You lose;

وَضَاعَ الْمُلِمُّونَ إِلَّا بِكَ،

Waḍāʿa al-mulimmūna illā bika,

those who turn to anyone but You are lost;

وَأَجْدَبَ الْمُنْتَجِعُونَ

Wa-ajdaba al-muntajiʿūna

those who search for fertile pasture find only barrenness,

إِلَّا مَنِ انْتَجَعَ فَضْلَكَ.

Illā mani intajaʿa faḍlaka.

except those who seek the pasture of Your bounty.

بَابُكَ مَفْتُوحٌ لِلرَّاغِبِينَ،

Bābuka maftūḥun li-l-rāghibīna,

Your door stands open to those who seek You,

وَجُودُكَ مُبَاحٌ لِلسَّائِلِينَ،

Wajūduka mubāḥun li-l-sāʾilīna,

Your generosity is available to those who ask,

وَإِغَاثَتُكَ قَرِيبَةٌ مِنَ الْمُسْتَغِيثِينَ.

Wa-ighāthatuka qarībatun mina al-mustaghīthīna.

and Your help is near to those who call for it.

لَا يَخِيبُ مِنْكَ الْآمِلُونَ،

Lā yakhību minka al-āmilūna,

Those who hope in You are never disappointed,

وَلَا يَيْأَسُ مِنْ عَطَائِكَ الْمُتَعَرِّضُونَ،

Walā yayʾasu min ʿaṭāʾika al-mutaʿarriḍūna,

those who seek Your gifts never despair,

وَلَا يَشْقَى بِنَقِمَتِكَ الْمُسْتَغْفِرُونَ.

Walā yashqā binaqimatika al-mustaghfirūna.

and those who seek forgiveness are not made wretched by Your punishment.

رِزْقُكَ مَبْسُوطٌ لِمَنْ عَصَاكَ،

Rizquka mabsūṭun liman ʿaṣāka,

Your provision is spread out even for those who defy You,

وَحِلْمُكَ مُعْتَرِضٌ لِمَنْ نَاوَاكَ.

Waḥilmuka muʿtariḍun liman nāwāka.

and Your forbearance stands before those who oppose You.

عَادَتُكَ الْإِحْسَانُ إِلَى الْمُسِيئِينَ،

ʿādatuka al-iḥsānu ilā al-musīʾīna,

Your constant practice is kindness to those who do wrong,

وَسُنَّتُكَ الْإِبْقَاءُ عَلَى الْمُعْتَدِينَ

Wasunnatuka al-ibqāʾu ʿalā al-muʿtadīna

and Your way is to spare those who transgress,

حَتَّى لَقَدْ غَرَّتْهُمْ أَنَاتُكَ عَنِ الرُّجُوعِ،

Ḥattā laqad gharrat-hum anātuka ʿani al-rujūʿi,

so much that Your patience has lulled them into failing to return,

وَصَدَّهُمْ إِمْهَالُكَ عَنِ النُّزُوعِ.

Waṣaddahum imhāluka ʿani al-nuzūʿi.

and the respite You give has kept them from abandoning their sins.

وَإِنَّمَا تَأَنَّيْتَ بِهِمْ لِيَفِيئُوا إِلَى أَمْرِكَ،

Wa-innamā taʾannayta bihim liyafīʾū ilā amrika,

Yet You have been patient with them so that they might return to Your command.

وَأَمْهَلْتَهُمْ ثِقَةً بِدَوَامِ مُلْكِكَ،

Wa-amhaltahum thiqatan bidawāmi mulkika,

You have given them time, assured that Your sovereignty endures.

فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ السَّعَادَةِ خَتَمْتَ لَهُ بِهَا،

Faman kāna min ahli al-saʿādati khatamta lahu bihā,

Whoever belongs to the people of happiness, You bring to a happy end;

وَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَهْلِ الشَّقَاوَةِ خَذَلْتَهُ لَهَا.

Waman kāna min ahli al-shaqāwati khadhaltahu lahā.

whoever belongs to the people of misery, You leave to it.

كُلُّهُمْ صَائِرُونَ إِلَى حُكْمِكَ

Kulluhum ṣāʾirūna ilā ḥukmika

All of them are coming to Your judgement,

وَأُمُورُهُمْ آئِلَةٌ إِلَى أَمْرِكَ.

Wa-umūruhum āʾilatun ilā amrika.

and their affairs will return to Your command.

لَمْ يَهِنْ عَلَى طُولِ مُدَّتِهِمْ سُلْطَانُكَ

Lam yahin ʿalā ṭūli muddatihim sulṭānuka

The long time granted them has not weakened Your authority,

وَلَمْ يَدْحَضْ لِتَرْكِ مُعَاجَلَتِهِمْ بُرْهَانُكَ.

Walam yadḥaḍ litarki muʿājalatihim burhānuka.

nor has delaying their punishment weakened Your proof.

حُجَّتُكَ قَائِمَةٌ لَا تُدْحَضُ،

Ḥujjatuka qāʾimatun lā tudḥaḍu,

Your case stands firm and cannot be refuted;

وَسُلْطَانُكَ ثَابِتٌ لَا يَزُولُ،

Wasulṭānuka thābitun lā yazūlu,

Your authority is established and never passes away.

فَالْوَيْلُ الدَّائِمُ لِمَنْ جَنَحَ عَنْكَ،

Fa-al-waylu al-dāʾimu liman janaḥa ʿanka,

Endless woe awaits those who turn aside from You,

وَالْخَيْبَةُ الْخَاذِلَةُ لِمَنْ خَابَ مِنْكَ،

Wa-al-khaybatu al-khādhilatu liman khāba minka,

crushing disappointment awaits those who find no favour with You,

وَالشَّقَاءُ الْأَشْقَى لِمَنِ اغْتَرَّ بِكَ.

Wa-al-shaqāʾu al-ashqā limani ightarra bika.

and the deepest misery awaits those who presume upon You.

مَا أَكْثَرَ تَصَرُّفَهُ فِي عَذَابِكَ،

Mā akthara taṣarrufahu fī ʿadhābika,

How many forms of Your torment such a person will undergo!

وَمَا أَطْوَلَ تَرَدُّدَهُ فِي عِقَابِكَ،

Wamā aṭwala taraddudahu fī ʿiqābika,

How long he will move from one punishment of Yours to another!

وَمَا أَبْعَدَ غَايَتَهُ مِنَ الْفَرَجِ،

Wamā abʿada ghāyatahu mina al-faraji,

How far his journey's end will be from relief,

وَمَا أَقْنَطَهُ مِنْ سُهُولَةِ الْمَخْرَجِ،

Wamā aqnaṭahu min suhūlati al-makhraji,

and how little hope he will have of an easy escape!

عَدْلًا مِنْ قَضَائِكَ لَا تَجُورُ فِيهِ،

ʿadlan min qaḍāʾika lā tajūru fīhi,

This is the justice of Your decree, in which You do no wrong,

وَإِنْصَافًا مِنْ حُكْمِكَ لَا تَحِيفُ عَلَيْهِ،

Wa-inṣāfan min ḥukmika lā taḥīfu ʿalayhi,

the fairness of Your judgement, in which You are never unjust to him.

فَقَدْ ظَاهَرْتَ الْحُجَجَ،

Faqad ẓāharta al-ḥujaja,

You have set out proof after proof,

وَأَبْلَيْتَ الْأَعْذَارَ،

Wa-ablayta al-aʿdhāra,

and exhausted every ground for excuse.

وَقَدْ تَقَدَّمْتَ بِالْوَعِيدِ

Waqad taqaddamta bi-al-waʿīdi

You have given warning in advance,

وَتَلَطَّفْتَ فِي التَّرْغِيبِ،

Watalaṭṭafta fī al-targhībi,

gently encouraged hope,

وَضَرَبْتَ الْأَمْثَالَ،

Waḍarabta al-amthāla,

offered parables,

وَأَطَلْتَ الْإِمْهَالَ،

Wa-aṭalta al-imhāla,

and granted a long respite.

وَأَخَّرْتَ وَأَنْتَ مُسْتَطِيعٌ لِلْمُعَاجَلَةِ،

Wa-akhkharta wa-anta mustaṭīʿun li-l-muʿājalati,

You have delayed when You had the power to act at once,

وَتَأَنَّيْتَ وَأَنْتَ مَلِيءٌ بِالْمُبَادَرَةِ.

Wataʾannayta wa-anta malīʾun bi-al-mubādarati.

and been patient when fully able to act immediately.

لَمْ تَكُنْ أَنَاتُكَ عَجْزًا،

Lam takun anātuka ʿajzan,

Your patience did not arise from inability,

وَلَا إِمْهَالُكَ وَهْنًا،

Walā imhāluka wahnan,

nor Your respite from weakness,

وَلَا إِمْسَاكُكَ غَفْلَةً،

Walā imsākuka ghaflatan,

nor Your restraint from heedlessness,

وَلَا انْتِظَارُكَ مُدَارَاةً،

Walā intiẓāruka mudārātan,

nor Your waiting from a need to placate anyone.

بَلْ لِتَكُونَ حُجَّتُكَ أَبْلَغَ،

Bal litakūna ḥujjatuka ablagha,

It was so that Your case might be more conclusive,

وَكَرَمُكَ أَكْمَلَ،

Wakaramuka akmala,

Your generosity more complete,

وَإِحْسَانُكَ أَوْفَى

Wa-iḥsānuka awfā

Your goodness more abundant,

وَنِعْمَتُكَ أَتَمَّ.

Waniʿmatuka atamma.

and Your blessing more perfect.

كُلُّ ذَٰلِكَ كَانَ وَلَمْ تَزَلْ،

Kullu dhālika kāna walam tazal,

All this has always been, and You have always been;

وَهُوَ كَائِنٌ وَلَا تَزَالُ.

Wahuwa kāʾinun walā tazālu.

it will continue to be, and You will always remain.

حُجَّتُكَ أَجَلُّ مِنْ أَنْ تُوصَفَ بِكُلِّهَا،

Ḥujjatuka ajallu min an tūṣafa bikullihā,

Your proof is too great to be described in full,

وَمَجْدُكَ أَرْفَعُ مِنْ أَنْ يُحَدَّ بِكُنْهِهِ،

Wamajduka arfaʿu min an yuḥadda bikunhihi,

Your glory too lofty for its true nature to be encompassed,

وَنِعْمَتُكَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَنْ تُحْصَى بِأَسْرِهَا،

Waniʿmatuka aktharu min an tuḥṣā biʾasrihā,

and Your blessings too many to be counted in their entirety.

وَإِحْسَانُكَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ أَنْ تُشْكَرَ عَلَى أَقَلِّهِ.

Wa-iḥsānuka aktharu min an tushkara ʿalā aqallihi.

Your goodness is too abundant for even its smallest part to be fully thanked.

وَقَدْ قَصَّرَ بِيَ السُّكُوتُ عَنْ تَحْمِيدِكَ،

Waqad qaṣṣara biya al-sukūtu ʿan taḥmīdika,

Silence has left me falling short of praising You,

وَفَهَّهَنِيَ الْإِمْسَاكُ عَنْ تَمْجِيدِكَ،

Wafahhahaniya al-imsāku ʿan tamjīdika,

and holding back has left me unable to speak Your glory.

وَقُصَارَايَ الْإِقْرَارُ بِالْحُسُورِ

Waquṣārāya al-iqrāru bi-al-ḥusūri

All I can do is admit my exhaustion,

لَا رَغْبَةً يَا إِلَٰهِي بَلْ عَجْزًا.

Lā raghbatan yā ilāhī bal ʿajzan.

not through unwillingness, my God, but through inability.

فَهَا أَنَا ذَا أَؤُمُّكَ بِالْوِفَادَةِ،

Fahā anā dhā aʾummuka bi-al-wifādati,

So here I am, coming to You as a guest,

وَأَسْأَلُكَ حُسْنَ الرِّفَادَةِ.

Wa-asʾaluka ḥusna al-rifādati.

asking You for a generous welcome.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاسْمَعْ نَجْوَايَ،

Wa-ismaʿ najwāya,

and hear my whispered prayer.

وَاسْتَجِبْ دُعَائِي

Wa-istajib duʿāʾī

Answer my supplication,

وَلَا تَخْتِمْ يَوْمِيَ بِخَيْبَتِي،

Walā takhtim yawmiya bikhaybatī,

and do not let my day end in disappointment.

وَلَا تَجْبَهْنِي بِالرَّدِّ فِي مَسْأَلَتِي،

Walā tajbahnī bi-al-raddi fī masʾalatī,

Do not meet my request with a harsh refusal.

وَأَكْرِمْ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ مُنْصَرَفِي

Wa-akrim min ʿindika munṣarafī

Honour my departure from Your presence,

وَإِلَيْكَ مُنْقَلَبِي.

Wa-ilayka munqalabī.

and my return is to You.

إِنَّكَ غَيْرُ ضَائِقٍ بِمَا تُرِيدُ

Innaka ghayru ḍāʾiqin bimā turīdu

Nothing You will is beyond Your scope,

وَلَا عَاجِزٍ عَمَّا تُسْأَلُ،

Walā ʿājizin ʿammā tusʾalu,

and nothing You are asked is beyond Your power.

وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ،

Wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun,

You have power over all things.

وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ.

Walā ḥawla walā quwwata illā billāhi al-ʿaliyyi al-ʿaẓīmi.

There is no power or strength except through God, the Most High, the Mighty.

Text notes and sources

Arabic text. The text follows Document 5 of the nine-part Arabic edition. All ten prayers were compared with the Arabic text in the Al-Kafeel Islamic Library. Their complete wording, order, repeated invocations, and shifts between singular and plural voices are retained. Spacing, punctuation, spelling, and vocalization have been regularized for reading.

Corrections. Prayer 41 removes an extra alif from al-malaʾ, the assembled people. Prayer 45 removes a duplicated wāw from waṣaḥibanā and a duplicated initial alif from two occurrences of al-salāmu. Standard hamza spelling is restored in al-muhannaʾ in Prayer 45 and imtalaʾat in Prayer 46. Grammatical vowels have also been corrected, including āminnā in Prayer 40, nushriku in Prayer 44, and hadaytanā in Prayer 45.

Readings retained. Viable readings of the base document are preserved where the comparison text differs. Prayer 39 retains ḥajarta, “made inviolable,” rather than ḥajazta. Prayer 43 retains the phrase about marking out time through the moon and the invocation for obedience and repentance. Prayer 45 retains the base wording of its farewell and Eid petitions. Lightened hamza forms found in the Arabic base are retained where viable.

Terms and voice. In Prayer 42, muḥkam refers to what is clear and decisive, while mutashābih refers to passages whose meaning is less immediately apparent. The inherited knowledge of the Qur’an and the invocations upon Muhammad and his family retain the devotional voice of the Arabic. In Prayers 44 and 45, Laylat al-Qadr is rendered “the Night of Decree.” The repeated farewells address Ramadan as a departing companion.

Translation and recitation. The English is a new rendering from the Arabic, preserving its devotional voice and imagery. It is not an official translation issued by the source institution. The Arabic remains the text for recitation; the transliteration is a reading aid. The three lines correspond in order, and long sentences continue across successive groups.

Qurʾānic passages. Prayer 44 quotes words from 2:185 and 97:3–5. Among the quotations in Prayer 45 are 66:8, concerning sincere repentance, and 40:60, concerning calling upon God. These passages have been translated afresh as they appear within the prayers.
