الْإِمَامُ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ زَيْنُ الْعَابِدِينَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

Prayers 25 to 36

Prayers 25 to 36 of the Complete Ṣaḥīfa al-Sajjādiyya. Each passage appears in fully vocalized Arabic, transliteration, and a new modern English translation. This volume includes prayers for children and neighbours, repentance, the night prayer, seeking God’s choice, and contentment. It closes with the prayer at clouds, lightning, and thunder.

Reading the three lines

Read each group from Arabic to transliteration to English. Short passages continue the prayer in order; a line ending need not be the end of a sentence. Each three-line group stays together on one page.

ā ī ū mark long vowels; ʿ marks ʿayn and ʾ marks hamza within a word. Initial hamza is represented by its vowel. ḥ ṣ ḍ ṭ ẓ distinguish Arabic consonants; th dh kh sh gh represent single Arabic sounds. Doubled consonants are held longer.

The transliteration retains grammatical endings and the written form al. In connected recitation, initial helping vowels often disappear and al assimilates before sun letters. At a full pause, final short case vowels are normally dropped. A separating hyphen, as in nufid-hā, keeps adjacent consonants distinct.

God translates Allāh. “Muhammad and his family” renders Muḥammad wa-ālihi. The first-person prayers remain in the voice of the person praying.

Al-duʿāʾu 25

Prayer 25

لِوُلْدِهِ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ

Liwuldihi ʿalayhimu al-salāmu

For his children, peace be upon them

اللَّهُمَّ وَمُنَّ عَلَيَّ بِبَقَاءِ وُلْدِي،

Allāhumma wamunna ʿalayya bibaqāʾi wuldī,

O God, bless me by keeping my children alive,

وَبِإِصْلَاحِهِمْ لِي،

Wabiʾiṣlāḥihim lī,

by making them upright for me,

وَبِإِمْتَاعِي بِهِمْ.

Wabiʾimtāʿī bihim.

and by letting me find joy in them.

إِلَهِي امْدُدْ لِي فِي أَعْمَارِهِمْ،

Ilāhī umdud lī fī aʿmārihim,

My God, grant them long lives for my sake,

وَزِدْ لِي فِي آجَالِهِمْ،

Wazid lī fī ājālihim,

and extend their allotted years for me.

وَرَبِّ لِي صَغِيرَهُمْ،

Warabbi lī ṣaghīrahum,

Nurture their young for me,

وَقَوِّ لِي ضَعِيفَهُمْ،

Waqawwi lī ḍaʿīfahum,

strengthen their weak,

وَأَصِحَّ لِي أَبْدَانَهُمْ وَأَدْيَانَهُمْ وَأَخْلَاقَهُمْ،

Wa-aṣiḥḥa lī abdānahum wa-adyānahum wa-akhlāqahum,

and make them sound in body, religion, and character.

وَعَافِهِمْ فِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَفِي جَوَارِحِهِمْ

Waʿāfihim fī anfusihim wafī jawāriḥihim

Keep them well in themselves and in their limbs,

وَفِي كُلِّ مَا عُنِيتُ بِهِ مِنْ أَمْرِهِمْ،

Wafī kulli mā ʿunītu bihi min amrihim,

and in every part of their lives that concerns me.

وَأَدْرِرْ لِي وَعَلَى يَدِي أَرْزَاقَهُمْ،

Wa-adrir lī waʿalā yadī arzāqahum,

Let their sustenance flow abundantly to me and through my hands.

وَاجْعَلْهُمْ أَبْرَارًا أَتْقِيَاءَ بُصَرَاءَ سَامِعِينَ

Wa-ijʿalhum abrāran atqiyāʾa buṣarāʾa sāmiʿīna

Make them good, mindful of You, discerning, and attentive,

مُطِيعِينَ لَكَ

Muṭīʿīna laka

obedient to You,

وَلِأَوْلِيَائِكَ مُحِبِّينَ مُنَاصِحِينَ،

Waliʾawliyāʾika muḥibbīna munāṣiḥīna,

loving Your friends and sincerely wishing them well,

وَلِجَمِيعِ أَعْدَائِكَ مُعَانِدِينَ وَمُبْغِضِينَ، آمِينَ.

Walijamīʿi aʿdāʾika muʿānidīna wamubghiḍīna, āmīna.

and opposing and hating all Your enemies. Amen.

اللَّهُمَّ اشْدُدْ بِهِمْ عَضُدِي،

Allāhumma ushdud bihim ʿaḍudī,

O God, strengthen my arm through them,

وَأَقِمْ بِهِمْ أَوَدِي،

Wa-aqim bihim awadī,

through them straighten what is bent in me,

وَكَثِّرْ بِهِمْ عَدَدِي،

Wakaththir bihim ʿadadī,

increase my numbers through them,

وَزَيِّنْ بِهِمْ مَحْضَرِي،

Wazayyin bihim maḥḍarī,

adorn my gatherings with their presence,

وَأَحْيِ بِهِمْ ذِكْرِي،

Wa-aḥyi bihim dhikrī,

and through them keep my memory alive.

وَاكْفِنِي بِهِمْ فِي غَيْبَتِي،

Wa-ikfinī bihim fī ghaybatī,

Let them take care of my affairs when I am absent,

وَأَعِنِّي بِهِمْ عَلَى حَاجَتِي،

Wa-aʿinnī bihim ʿalā ḥājatī,

and through them help me meet my needs.

وَاجْعَلْهُمْ لِي مُحِبِّينَ،

Wa-ijʿalhum lī muḥibbīna,

Make them loving towards me,

وَعَلَيَّ حَدِبِينَ مُقْبِلِينَ مُسْتَقِيمِينَ لِي،

Waʿalayya ḥadibīna muqbilīna mustaqīmīna lī,

tender, attentive, and upright in their dealings with me,

مُطِيعِينَ غَيْرَ عَاصِينَ

Muṭīʿīna ghayra ʿāṣīna

obedient, without disobedience,

وَلَا عَاقِّينَ وَلَا مُخَالِفِينَ وَلَا خَاطِئِينَ،

Walā ʿāqqīna walā mukhālifīna walā khāṭiʾīna,

unkindness, defiance, or wrongdoing.

وَأَعِنِّي عَلَى تَرْبِيَتِهِمْ وَتَأْدِيبِهِمْ وَبِرِّهِمْ،

Wa-aʿinnī ʿalā tarbiyatihim wataʾdībihim wabirrihim,

Help me raise them, teach them good conduct, and care for them.

وَهَبْ لِي مِنْ لَدُنْكَ مَعَهُمْ أَوْلَادًا ذُكُورًا،

Wahab lī min ladunka maʿahum awlādan dhukūran,

And grant me, from Yourself, sons alongside them.

وَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ خَيْرًا لِي،

Wa-ijʿal dhālika khayran lī,

Make this a source of good for me,

وَاجْعَلْهُمْ لِي عَوْنًا عَلَى مَا سَأَلْتُكَ،

Wa-ijʿalhum lī ʿawnan ʿalā mā saʾaltuka,

and make them my helpers in what I have asked of You.

وَأَعِذْنِي وَذُرِّيَّتِي مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ،

Wa-aʿidhnī wadhurriyyatī mina al-shayṭāni al-rajīmi,

Protect me and my descendants from Satan, the outcast.

فَإِنَّكَ خَلَقْتَنَا وَأَمَرْتَنَا وَنَهَيْتَنَا

Fa-innaka khalaqtanā wa-amartanā wanahaytanā

You created us, gave us commands and prohibitions,

وَرَغَّبْتَنَا فِي ثَوَابِ مَا أَمَرْتَنَا

Waraghghabtanā fī thawābi mā amartanā

stirred in us a desire for the reward of obeying Your commands,

وَرَهَّبْتَنَا عِقَابَهُ،

Warahhabtanā ʿiqābahu,

and made us fear the punishment for defying them.

وَجَعَلْتَ لَنَا عَدُوًّا يَكِيدُنَا،

Wajaʿalta lanā ʿaduwwan yakīdunā,

You appointed an enemy who plots against us,

سَلَّطْتَهُ مِنَّا عَلَى مَا لَمْ تُسَلِّطْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنْهُ،

Sallaṭtahu minnā ʿalā mā lam tusalliṭnā ʿalayhi minhu,

giving him access to us that You have not given us to him.

أَسْكَنْتَهُ صُدُورَنَا،

Askantahu ṣudūranā,

You let him dwell within our breasts

وَأَجْرَيْتَهُ مَجَارِيَ دِمَائِنَا،

Wa-ajraytahu majāriya dimāʾinā,

and move through the channels of our blood.

لَا يَغْفُلُ إِنْ غَفَلْنَا،

Lā yaghfulu in ghafalnā,

He stays alert when we grow heedless,

وَلَا يَنْسَى إِنْ نَسِينَا،

Walā yansā in nasīnā,

and remembers when we forget.

يُؤْمِنُنَا عِقَابَكَ،

Yuʾminunā ʿiqābaka,

He makes us feel safe from Your punishment

وَيُخَوِّفُنَا بِغَيْرِكَ،

Wayukhawwifunā bighayrika,

and makes us fear what is other than You.

إِنْ هَمَمْنَا بِفَاحِشَةٍ شَجَّعَنَا عَلَيْهَا،

In hamamnā bifāḥishatin shajjaʿanā ʿalayhā,

If we consider an indecent act, he urges us to do it;

وَإِنْ هَمَمْنَا بِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ ثَبَّطَنَا عَنْهُ،

Wa-in hamamnā biʿamalin ṣāliḥin thabbaṭanā ʿanhu,

if we consider a good deed, he discourages us from it.

يَتَعَرَّضُ لَنَا بِالشَّهَوَاتِ،

Yataʿarraḍu lanā bi-al-shahawāti,

He confronts us with desires

وَيَنْصِبُ لَنَا بِالشُّبُهَاتِ،

Wayanṣibu lanā bi-al-shubuhāti,

and lays traps for us with doubts.

إِنْ وَعَدَنَا كَذَبَنَا،

In waʿadanā kadhabanā,

When he promises us, he lies;

وَإِنْ مَنَّانَا أَخْلَفَنَا،

Wa-in mannānā akhlafanā,

when he raises our hopes, he disappoints us.

وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنَّا كَيْدَهُ يُضِلَّنَا،

Wa-illā taṣrif ʿannā kaydahu yuḍillanā,

Unless You turn his schemes away from us, he will lead us astray;

وَإِلَّا تَقِنَا خَبَالَهُ يَسْتَزِلَّنَا.

Wa-illā taqinā khabālahu yastazillanā.

unless You shield us from his corruption, he will make us stumble.

اللَّهُمَّ فَاقْهَرْ سُلْطَانَهُ عَنَّا بِسُلْطَانِكَ

Allāhumma fa-iqhar sulṭānahu ʿannā bisulṭānika

O God, overcome his power over us through Your power,

حَتَّى تَحْبِسَهُ عَنَّا بِكَثْرَةِ الدُّعَاءِ لَكَ،

Ḥattā taḥbisahu ʿannā bikathrati al-duʿāʾi laka,

holding him back from us through our frequent prayers to You,

فَنُصْبِحَ مِنْ كَيْدِهِ فِي الْمَعْصُومِينَ بِكَ.

Fanuṣbiḥa min kaydihi fī al-maʿṣūmīna bika.

so that we are among those You protect from his schemes.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعْطِنِي كُلَّ سُؤْلِي،

Allāhumma aʿṭinī kulla suʾlī,

O God, grant me all that I ask

وَاقْضِ لِي حَوَائِجِي،

Wa-iqḍi lī ḥawāʾijī,

and fulfil my needs.

وَلَا تَمْنَعْنِي الْإِجَابَةَ وَقَدْ ضَمِنْتَهَا لِي،

Walā tamnaʿnī al-ijābata waqad ḍamintahā lī,

Do not withhold Your answer, which You have promised me.

وَلَا تَحْجُبْ دُعَائِي عَنْكَ وَقَدْ أَمَرْتَنِي بِهِ،

Walā taḥjub duʿāʾī ʿanka waqad amartanī bihi,

Do not veil my prayer from You, when You have told me to pray.

وَامْنُنْ عَلَيَّ بِكُلِّ مَا يُصْلِحُنِي

Wa-umnun ʿalayya bikulli mā yuṣliḥunī

Bless me with everything that will set me right

فِي دُنْيَايَ وَآخِرَتِي،

Fī dunyāya wa-ākhiratī,

in this life and the next,

مَا ذَكَرْتُ مِنْهُ وَمَا نَسِيتُ،

Mā dhakartu minhu wamā nasītu,

whatever I have remembered and whatever I have forgotten,

أَوْ أَظْهَرْتُ أَوْ أَخْفَيْتُ،

Aw aẓhartu aw akhfaytu,

whatever I have revealed or concealed,

أَوْ أَعْلَنْتُ أَوْ أَسْرَرْتُ،

Aw aʿlantu aw asrartu,

made public or kept secret.

وَاجْعَلْنِي فِي جَمِيعِ ذَلِكَ مِنَ الْمُصْلِحِينَ بِسُؤَالِي إِيَّاكَ،

Wa-ijʿalnī fī jamīʿi dhālika mina al-muṣliḥīna bisuʾālī iyyāka,

In all this, let my asking You make me one of those who do good,

الْمُنْجِحِينَ بِالطَّلَبِ إِلَيْكَ،

Al-munjiḥīna bi-al-ṭalabi ilayka,

who find success through turning to You with their requests,

غَيْرِ الْمَمْنُوعِينَ بِالتَّوَكُّلِ عَلَيْكَ،

Ghayri al-mamnūʿīna bi-al-tawakkuli ʿalayka,

who are not denied when they put their trust in You,

الْمُعَوَّدِينَ بِالتَّعَوُّذِ بِكَ،

Al-muʿawwadīna bi-al-taʿawwudhi bika,

who have grown accustomed to seeking refuge in You,

الرَّابِحِينَ فِي التِّجَارَةِ عَلَيْكَ،

Al-rābiḥīna fī al-tijārati ʿalayka,

who profit in their dealings with You,

الْمُجَارِينَ بِعِزِّكَ،

Al-mujārīna biʿizzika,

and who find sanctuary in Your might.

الْمُوَسَّعِ عَلَيْهِمُ الرِّزْقُ الْحَلَالُ

Al-muwassaʿi ʿalayhimu al-rizqu al-ḥalālu

who receive lawful sustenance in abundance

مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْوَاسِعِ بِجُودِكَ وَكَرَمِكَ،

Min faḍlika al-wāsiʿi bijūdika wakaramika,

from Your boundless bounty, through Your generosity and kindness,

الْمُعَزِّينَ مِنَ الذُّلِّ بِكَ،

Al-muʿazzīna mina al-dhulli bika,

who are raised from humiliation to honour through You,

وَالْمُجَارِينَ مِنَ الظُّلْمِ بِعَدْلِكَ،

Wa-al-mujārīna mina al-ẓulmi biʿadlika,

sheltered from injustice through Your justice,

وَالْمُعَافَيْنَ مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ،

Wa-al-muʿāfayna mina al-balāʾi biraḥmatika,

spared affliction through Your mercy,

وَالْمُغْنَيْنَ مِنَ الْفَقْرِ بِغِنَاكَ،

Wa-al-mughnayna mina al-faqri bighināka,

and freed from poverty through Your riches.

وَالْمَعْصُومِينَ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ وَالزَّلَلِ وَالْخَطَأِ بِتَقْوَاكَ،

Wa-al-maʿṣūmīna mina al-dhunūbi wa-al-zalali wa-al-khaṭaʾi bitaqwāka,

who are guarded from sins, slips, and errors by revering You,

وَالْمُوَفَّقِينَ لِلْخَيْرِ وَالرُّشْدِ وَالصَّوَابِ بِطَاعَتِكَ،

Wa-al-muwaffaqīna li-l-khayri wa-al-rushdi wa-al-ṣawābi biṭāʿatika,

who find goodness, guidance, and right action in obeying You,

وَالْمُحَالِ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ الذُّنُوبِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ،

Wa-al-muḥāli baynahum wabayna al-dhunūbi biqudratika,

who are kept from sin through Your power,

التَّارِكِينَ لِكُلِّ مَعْصِيَتِكَ،

Al-tārikīna likulli maʿṣiyatika,

who abandon every act of disobedience to You

السَّاكِنِينَ فِي جِوَارِكَ.

Al-sākinīna fī jiwārika.

and dwell in Your nearness.

اللَّهُمَّ أَعْطِنَا جَمِيعَ ذَلِكَ بِتَوْفِيقِكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ،

Allāhumma aʿṭinā jamīʿa dhālika bitawfīqika waraḥmatika,

O God, grant us all this through Your enabling grace and mercy,

وَأَعِذْنَا مِنْ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ،

Wa-aʿidhnā min ʿadhābi al-saʿīri,

and protect us from the punishment of the blazing Fire.

وَأَعْطِ جَمِيعَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَالْمُسْلِمَاتِ

Wa-aʿṭi jamīʿa al-muslimīna wa-al-muslimāti

Grant all Muslim men and women,

وَالْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

Wa-al-muʾminīna wa-al-muʾmināti

and all believing men and women,

مِثْلَ الَّذِي سَأَلْتُكَ لِنَفْسِي وَلِوُلْدِي

Mithla alladhī saʾaltuka linafsī waliwuldī

the same as I have asked of You for myself and my children,

فِي عَاجِلِ الدُّنْيَا وَآجِلِ الْآخِرَةِ،

Fī ʿājili al-dunyā wa-ājili al-ākhirati,

in this present world and the hereafter to come.

إِنَّكَ قَرِيبٌ مُجِيبٌ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ،

Innaka qarībun mujībun samīʿun ʿalīmun,

You are near and responsive, all-hearing and all-knowing,

عَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌ رَؤُوفٌ رَحِيمٌ.

ʿafuwwun ghafūrun raʾūfun raḥīmun.

ever pardoning and forgiving, tender and merciful.

وَآتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً

Wa-ātinā fī al-dunyā ḥasanatan

Grant us good in this world,

وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً

Wafī al-ākhirati ḥasanatan

and good in the next,

وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ.

Waqinā ʿadhāba al-nāri.

and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

الدُّعَاءُ ٢٦

Al-duʿāʾu 26

Prayer 26

لِجِيرَانِهِ وَأَوْلِيَائِهِ إِذَا ذَكَرَهُمْ

Lijīrānihi wa-awliyāʾihi idhā dhakarahum

For his neighbours and friends when he remembered them

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَتَوَلَّنِي فِي جِيرَانِي وَمَوَالِيَّ

Watawallanī fī jīrānī wamawāliyya

Take care of me through my neighbours and loyal friends,

وَالْعَارِفِينَ بِحَقِّنَا وَالْمُنَابِذِينَ لِأَعْدَائِنَا

Wa-al-ʿārifīna biḥaqqinā wa-al-munābidhīna liʾaʿdāʾinā

those who recognise our rights and stand against our enemies,

بِأَفْضَلِ وَلَايَتِكَ،

Biʾafḍali walāyatika,

with the finest of Your care.

وَوَفِّقْهُمْ لِإِقَامَةِ سُنَّتِكَ

Wawaffiqhum liʾiqāmati sunnatika

Enable them to uphold Your way

وَالْأَخْذِ بِمَحَاسِنِ أَدَبِكَ

Wa-al-akhdhi bimaḥāsini adabika

and practise the good conduct You teach:

فِي إِرْفَاقِ ضَعِيفِهِمْ،

Fī irfāqi ḍaʿīfihim,

helping those among them who are weak,

وَسَدِّ خَلَّتِهِمْ،

Wasaddi khallatihim,

meeting their needs,

وَعِيَادَةِ مَرِيضِهِمْ،

Waʿiyādati marīḍihim,

visiting their sick,

وَهِدَايَةِ مُسْتَرْشِدِهِمْ،

Wahidāyati mustarshidihim,

guiding those who seek direction,

وَمُنَاصَحَةِ مُسْتَشِيرِهِمْ،

Wamunāṣaḥati mustashīrihim,

giving sincere counsel to those who seek advice,

وَتَعَهُّدِ قَادِمِهِمْ،

Wataʿahhudi qādimihim,

caring for those who arrive among them,

وَكِتْمَانِ أَسْرَارِهِمْ،

Wakitmāni asrārihim,

keeping their secrets,

وَسَتْرِ عَوْرَاتِهِمْ،

Wasatri ʿawrātihim,

covering their faults,

وَنُصْرَةِ مَظْلُومِهِمْ،

Wanuṣrati maẓlūmihim,

supporting those who suffer injustice,

وَحُسْنِ مُوَاسَاتِهِمْ بِالْمَاعُونِ،

Waḥusni muwāsātihim bi-al-māʿūni,

generously sharing everyday necessities with them,

وَالْعَوْدِ عَلَيْهِمْ بِالْجِدَةِ وَالْإِفْضَالِ،

Wa-al-ʿawdi ʿalayhim bi-al-jidati wa-al-ifḍāli,

helping them from their means and giving freely,

وَإِعْطَاءِ مَا يَجِبُ لَهُمْ قَبْلَ السُّؤَالِ.

Wa-iʿṭāʾi mā yajibu lahum qabla al-suʾāli.

and giving them what they are owed before they need to ask.

وَاجْعَلْنِي اللَّهُمَّ أَجْزِي بِالْإِحْسَانِ مُسِيئَهُمْ،

Wa-ijʿalnī Allāhumma ajzī bi-al-iḥsāni musīʾahum,

O God, let me answer their wrongdoing with kindness,

وَأُعْرِضُ بِالتَّجَاوُزِ عَنْ ظَالِمِهِمْ،

Wa-uʿriḍu bi-al-tajāwuzi ʿan ẓālimihim,

overlook and pardon those among them who wrong me,

وَأَسْتَعْمِلُ حُسْنَ الظَّنِّ فِي كَافَّتِهِمْ،

Wa-astaʿmilu ḥusna al-ẓanni fī kāffatihim,

think well of them all,

وَأَتَوَلَّى بِالْبِرِّ عَامَّتَهُمْ،

Wa-atawallā bi-al-birri ʿāmmatahum,

and treat everyone among them with goodness.

وَأَغُضُّ بَصَرِي عَنْهُمْ عِفَّةً،

Wa-aghuḍḍu baṣarī ʿanhum ʿiffatan,

Let me lower my gaze out of modesty,

وَأُلِينُ جَانِبِي لَهُمْ تَوَاضُعًا،

Wa-ulīnu jānibī lahum tawāḍuʿan,

be gentle with them out of humility,

وَأَرِقُّ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْبَلَاءِ مِنْهُمْ رَحْمَةً،

Wa-ariqqu ʿalā ahli al-balāʾi minhum raḥmatan,

show tenderness to their afflicted out of compassion,

وَأُسِرُّ لَهُمْ بِالْغَيْبِ مَوَدَّةً،

Wa-usirru lahum bi-al-ghaybi mawaddatan,

cherish affection for them in their absence,

وَأُحِبُّ بَقَاءَ النِّعْمَةِ عِنْدَهُمْ نُصْحًا،

Wa-uḥibbu baqāʾa al-niʿmati ʿindahum nuṣḥan,

and sincerely wish their blessings to remain with them.

وَأُوجِبُ لَهُمْ مَا أُوجِبُ لِحَامَّتِي،

Wa-ūjibu lahum mā ūjibu liḥāmmatī,

Let me hold myself to the duties I owe my close kin,

وَأَرْعَى لَهُمْ مَا أَرْعَى لِخَاصَّتِي.

Wa-arʿā lahum mā arʿā likhāṣṣatī.

and care for their interests as I do for those nearest to me.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَارْزُقْنِي مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ مِنْهُمْ،

Wa-urzuqnī mithla dhālika minhum,

Grant me the same care from them,

وَاجْعَلْ لِي أَوْفَى الْحُظُوظِ فِيمَا عِنْدَهُمْ،

Wa-ijʿal lī awfā al-ḥuẓūẓi fīmā ʿindahum,

and give me the fullest share of the good they have to offer.

وَزِدْهُمْ بَصِيرَةً فِي حَقِّي،

Wazid-hum baṣīratan fī ḥaqqī,

Deepen their understanding of my rights

وَمَعْرِفَةً بِفَضْلِي،

Wamaʿrifatan bifaḍlī,

and their knowledge of my standing,

حَتَّى يَسْعَدُوا بِي وَأَسْعَدَ بِهِمْ،

Ḥattā yasʿadū bī wa-asʿada bihim,

so that they find happiness through me, and I through them.

آمِينَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ.

Āmīna rabba al-ʿālamīna.

Amen, Lord of all worlds.

Prayer 27

لِأَهْلِ الثُّغُورِ

Liʾahli al-thughūri

For those who guard the frontiers

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَحَصِّنْ ثُغُورَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ بِعِزَّتِكَ،

Waḥaṣṣin thughūra al-muslimīna biʿizzatika,

Fortify the frontiers of the Muslims through Your might,

وَأَيِّدْ حُمَاتَهَا بِقُوَّتِكَ،

Wa-ayyid ḥumātahā biquwwatika,

support their defenders through Your strength,

وَأَسْبِغْ عَطَايَاهُمْ مِنْ جِدَتِكَ.

Wa-asbigh ʿaṭāyāhum min jidatika.

and provide for them abundantly from Your riches.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَكَثِّرْ عِدَّتَهُمْ،

Wakaththir ʿiddatahum,

Increase their numbers,

وَاشْحَذْ أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ،

Wa-ishḥadh asliḥatahum,

sharpen their weapons,

وَاحْرُسْ حَوْزَتَهُمْ،

Wa-uḥrus ḥawzatahum,

watch over their territory,

وَامْنَعْ حَوْمَتَهُمْ،

Wa-imnaʿ ḥawmatahum,

protect their stronghold,

وَأَلِّفْ جَمْعَهُمْ،

Wa-allif jamʿahum,

unite their ranks,

وَدَبِّرْ أَمْرَهُمْ،

Wadabbir amrahum,

direct their affairs,

وَوَاتِرْ بَيْنَ مِيَرِهِمْ،

Wawātir bayna miyarihim,

and keep their supplies arriving without interruption.

وَتَوَحَّدْ بِكِفَايَةِ مُؤَنِهِمْ،

Watawaḥḥad bikifāyati muʾanihim,

Take upon Yourself the meeting of all their needs,

وَاعْضُدْهُمْ بِالنَّصْرِ،

Wa-uʿḍud-hum bi-al-naṣri,

sustain them with victory,

وَأَعِنْهُمْ بِالصَّبْرِ،

Wa-aʿinhum bi-al-ṣabri,

help them to endure,

وَالْطُفْ لَهُمْ فِي الْمَكْرِ.

Wa-ulṭuf lahum fī al-makri.

and favour them with subtlety in their strategy.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَعَرِّفْهُمْ مَا يَجْهَلُونَ،

Waʿarrifhum mā yajhalūna,

Make known to them what they are ignorant of,

وَعَلِّمْهُمْ مَا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ،

Waʿallimhum mā lā yaʿlamūna,

teach them what they do not know,

وَبَصِّرْهُمْ مَا لَا يُبْصِرُونَ.

Wabaṣṣirhum mā lā yubṣirūna.

and give them insight into what they do not see.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَنْسِهِمْ عِنْدَ لِقَائِهِمُ الْعَدُوَّ

Wa-ansihim ʿinda liqāʾihimu al-ʿaduwwa

When they meet the enemy, make them forget

ذِكْرَ دُنْيَاهُمُ الْخَدَّاعَةِ الْغَرُورِ،

Dhikra dunyāhumu al-khaddāʿati al-gharūri,

this worldly life with its tricks and delusions.

وَامْحُ عَنْ قُلُوبِهِمْ خَطَرَاتِ الْمَالِ الْفَتُونِ،

Wa-umḥu ʿan qulūbihim khaṭarāti al-māli al-fatūni,

Erase from their hearts thoughts of wealth and its temptations.

وَاجْعَلِ الْجَنَّةَ نُصْبَ أَعْيُنِهِمْ،

Wa-ijʿali al-jannata nuṣba aʿyunihim,

Set the Garden before their eyes,

وَلَوِّحْ مِنْهَا لِأَبْصَارِهِمْ مَا أَعْدَدْتَ فِيهَا

Walawwiḥ minhā liʾabṣārihim mā aʿdadta fīhā

and let them glimpse what You have prepared there:

مِنْ مَسَاكِنِ الْخُلْدِ وَمَنَازِلِ الْكَرَامَةِ

Min masākini al-khuldi wamanāzili al-karāmati

everlasting dwellings, homes of honour,

وَالْحُورِ الْحِسَانِ

Wa-al-ḥūri al-ḥisāni

beautiful companions with radiant eyes,

وَالْأَنْهَارِ الْمُطَّرِدَةِ بِأَنْوَاعِ الْأَشْرِبَةِ،

Wa-al-anhāri al-muṭṭaridati biʾanwāʿi al-ashribati,

rivers flowing with many kinds of drink,

وَالْأَشْجَارِ الْمُتَدَلِّيَةِ بِصُنُوفِ الثَّمَرِ،

Wa-al-ashjāri al-mutadalliyati biṣunūfi al-thamari,

and trees whose branches hang low with varied fruit,

حَتَّى لَا يَهُمَّ أَحَدٌ مِنْهُمْ بِالْإِدْبَارِ،

Ḥattā lā yahumma aḥadun minhum bi-al-idbāri,

so that none of them considers retreat

وَلَا يُحَدِّثَ نَفْسَهُ عَنْ قِرْنِهِ بِفِرَارٍ.

Walā yuḥadditha nafsahu ʿan qirnihi bifirārin.

or thinks of fleeing from his opponent.

اللَّهُمَّ افْلُلْ بِذَلِكَ عَدُوَّهُمْ،

Allāhumma uflul bi-dhālika ʿaduwwahum,

O God, through this break their enemy's strength,

وَاقْلِمْ عَنْهُمْ أَظْفَارَهُمْ،

Wa-iqlim ʿanhum aẓfārahum,

clip the claws raised against them,

وَفَرِّقْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ أَسْلِحَتِهِمْ،

Wafarriq baynahum wabayna asliḥatihim,

separate their enemies from their weapons,

وَاخْلَعْ وَثَائِقَ أَفْئِدَتِهِمْ،

Wa-ikhlaʿ wathāʾiqa afʾidatihim,

loosen the bonds that steady their hearts,

وَبَاعِدْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ أَزْوِدَتِهِمْ،

Wabāʿid baynahum wabayna azwidatihim,

put their provisions far beyond their reach,

وَحَيِّرْهُمْ فِي سُبُلِهِمْ،

Waḥayyirhum fī subulihim,

bewilder them on their roads,

وَضَلِّلْهُمْ عَنْ وَجْهِهِمْ،

Waḍallilhum ʿan wajhihim,

and make them lose their way to their destination.

وَاقْطَعْ عَنْهُمُ الْمَدَدَ،

Wa-iqṭaʿ ʿanhumu al-madada,

Cut off their reinforcements,

وَانْقُصْ مِنْهُمُ الْعَدَدَ،

Wa-unquṣ minhumu al-ʿadada,

diminish their numbers,

وَامْلَأْ أَفْئِدَتَهُمُ الرُّعْبَ،

Wa-imlaʾ afʾidatahumu al-ruʿba,

fill their hearts with terror,

وَاقْبِضْ أَيْدِيَهُمْ عَنِ الْبَسْطِ،

Wa-iqbiḍ aydiyahum ʿani al-basṭi,

hold back their hands from striking,

وَاخْزِمْ أَلْسِنَتَهُمْ عَنِ النُّطْقِ،

Wa-ikhzim alsinatahum ʿani al-nuṭqi,

and bridle their tongues so they cannot speak.

وَشَرِّدْ بِهِمْ مَنْ خَلْفَهُمْ،

Washarrid bihim man khalfahum,

Through their defeat, scatter those who follow them,

وَنَكِّلْ بِهِمْ مَنْ وَرَاءَهُمْ،

Wanakkil bihim man warāʾahum,

make their fate a warning to those behind them,

وَاقْطَعْ بِخِزْيِهِمْ أَطْمَاعَ مَنْ بَعْدَهُمْ.

Wa-iqṭaʿ bikhizyihim aṭmāʿa man baʿdahum.

and through their disgrace end the ambitions of those who come after.

اللَّهُمَّ عَقِّمْ أَرْحَامَ نِسَائِهِمْ،

Allāhumma ʿaqqim arḥāma nisāʾihim,

O God, make their women's wombs barren,

وَيَبِّسْ أَصْلَابَ رِجَالِهِمْ،

Wayabbis aṣlāba rijālihim,

dry up the loins of their men,

وَاقْطَعْ نَسْلَ دَوَابِّهِمْ وَأَنْعَامِهِمْ،

Wa-iqṭaʿ nasla dawābbihim wa-anʿāmihim,

and end the offspring of their mounts and their livestock.

لَا تَأْذَنْ لِسَمَائِهِمْ فِي قَطْرٍ

Lā taʾdhan lisamāʾihim fī qaṭrin

Do not permit their skies to give rain

وَلَا لِأَرْضِهِمْ فِي نَبَاتٍ.

Walā liʾarḍihim fī nabātin.

or their land to bring forth plants.

اللَّهُمَّ وَقَوِّ بِذَلِكَ مِحَالَ أَهْلِ الْإِسْلَامِ،

Allāhumma waqawwi bi-dhālika miḥāla ahli al-islāmi,

O God, through this strengthen the might of the people of Islam,

وَحَصِّنْ بِهِ دِيَارَهُمْ،

Waḥaṣṣin bihi diyārahum,

fortify their homes,

وَثَمِّرْ بِهِ أَمْوَالَهُمْ،

Wathammir bihi amwālahum,

and make their wealth fruitful.

وَفَرِّغْهُمْ عَنْ مُحَارَبَتِهِمْ لِعِبَادَتِكَ

Wafarrighhum ʿan muḥārabatihim liʿibādatika

Free them from fighting their enemies so they may worship You,

وَعَنْ مُنَابَذَتِهِمْ لِلْخَلْوَةِ بِكَ،

Waʿan munābadhatihim li-l-khalwati bika,

and from opposing them so they may be alone with You,

حَتَّى لَا يُعْبَدَ فِي بِقَاعِ الْأَرْضِ غَيْرُكَ

Ḥattā lā yuʿbada fī biqāʿi al-arḍi ghayruka

until none but You is worshipped anywhere on earth

وَلَا تُعَفَّرَ لِأَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ جَبْهَةٌ دُونَكَ.

Walā tuʿaffara liʾaḥadin minhum jabhatun dūnaka.

and no forehead among them touches the dust before anyone but You.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْزُ بِكُلِّ نَاحِيَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ

Allāhumma ughzu bikulli nāḥiyatin mina al-muslimīna

O God, send the Muslims of every region into battle

عَلَى مَنْ بِإِزَائِهِمْ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ،

ʿalā man biʾizāʾihim mina al-mushrikīna,

against the polytheists who confront them.

وَأَمْدِدْهُمْ بِمَلَائِكَةٍ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ مُرْدِفِينَ

Wa-amdid-hum bimalāʾikatin min ʿindika murdifīna

Reinforce them with successive ranks of angels from Your presence,

حَتَّى يَكْشِفُوهُمْ إِلَى مُنْقَطَعِ التُّرَابِ

Ḥattā yakshifūhum ilā munqaṭaʿi al-turābi

until they drive them to the farthest reaches of the land,

قَتْلًا فِي أَرْضِكَ وَأَسْرًا،

Qatlan fī arḍika wa-asran,

killing and taking captives throughout Your earth,

أَوْ يُقِرُّوا بِأَنَّكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ

Aw yuqirrū biʾannaka anta Allāhu

or until they acknowledge that You are God,

الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Alladhī lā ilāha illā anta

that there is no god but You,

وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ.

Waḥdaka lā sharīka laka.

You alone, with no partner.

اللَّهُمَّ وَاعْمُمْ بِذَلِكَ أَعْدَاءَكَ فِي أَقْطَارِ الْبِلَادِ

Allāhumma wa-uʿmum bi-dhālika aʿdāʾaka fī aqṭāri al-bilādi

O God, extend this to Your enemies across the lands:

مِنَ الْهِنْدِ وَالرُّومِ وَالتُّرْكِ وَالْخَزَرِ

Mina al-hindi wa-al-rūmi wa-al-turki wa-al-khazari

the Indians, Romans, Turks, and Khazars,

وَالْحَبَشِ وَالنُّوبَةِ وَالزَّنْجِ

Wa-al-ḥabashi wa-al-nūbati wa-al-zanji

the Abyssinians, Nubians, and Zanj,

وَالسَّقَالِبَةِ وَالدَّيَالِمَةِ

Wa-al-saqālibati wa-al-dayālimati

the Slavs and Daylamites,

وَسَائِرِ أُمَمِ الشِّرْكِ الَّذِينَ تَخْفَى أَسْمَاؤُهُمْ وَصِفَاتُهُمْ،

Wasāʾiri umami al-shirki alladhīna takhfā asmāʾuhum waṣifātuhum,

and all other polytheist peoples whose names and traits are unknown.

وَقَدْ أَحْصَيْتَهُمْ بِمَعْرِفَتِكَ،

Waqad aḥṣaytahum bimaʿrifatika,

You have counted them all in Your knowledge

وَأَشْرَفْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِقُدْرَتِكَ.

Wa-ashrafta ʿalayhim biqudratika.

and watch over them through Your power.

اللَّهُمَّ اشْغَلِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ بِالْمُشْرِكِينَ

Allāhumma ishghali al-mushrikīna bi-al-mushrikīna

O God, occupy the polytheists with one another,

عَنْ تَنَاوُلِ أَطْرَافِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ،

ʿan tanāwuli aṭrāfi al-muslimīna,

keeping them from reaching the Muslim frontiers.

وَخُذْهُمْ بِالنَّقْصِ عَنْ تَنَقُّصِهِمْ،

Wakhudhhum bi-al-naqṣi ʿan tanaqquṣihim,

Afflict them with losses so they cannot diminish the Muslims,

وَثَبِّطْهُمْ بِالْفُرْقَةِ عَنِ الِاحْتِشَادِ عَلَيْهِمْ.

Wathabbiṭhum bi-al-furqati ʿani al-iḥtishādi ʿalayhim.

and divide them so they cannot gather against them.

اللَّهُمَّ أَخْلِ قُلُوبَهُمْ مِنَ الْأَمَنَةِ

Allāhumma akhli qulūbahum mina al-amanati

O God, empty their hearts of security

وَأَبْدَانَهُمْ مِنَ الْقُوَّةِ،

Wa-abdānahum mina al-quwwati,

and their bodies of strength.

وَأَذْهِلْ قُلُوبَهُمْ عَنِ الِاحْتِيَالِ،

Wa-adhhil qulūbahum ʿani al-iḥtiyāli,

Distract their minds from devising schemes,

وَأَوْهِنْ أَرْكَانَهُمْ عَنْ مُنَازَلَةِ الرِّجَالِ،

Wa-awhin arkānahum ʿan munāzalati al-rijāli,

weaken their limbs so they cannot face men in combat,

وَجَبِّنْهُمْ عَنْ مُقَارَعَةِ الْأَبْطَالِ،

Wajabbinhum ʿan muqāraʿati al-abṭāli,

and make them too afraid to clash with warriors.

وَابْعَثْ عَلَيْهِمْ جُنْدًا مِنْ مَلَائِكَتِكَ

Wa-ibʿath ʿalayhim jundan min malāʾikatika

Send against them an army of Your angels,

بِبَأْسٍ مِنْ بَأْسِكَ كَفِعْلِكَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ،

Bibaʾsin min baʾsika kafiʿlika yawma badrin,

with a force from Your might, as You did on the day of Badr,

تَقْطَعُ بِهِ دَابِرَهُمْ

Taqṭaʿu bihi dābirahum

to cut off the last of them

وَتَحْصُدُ بِهِ شَوْكَتَهُمْ،

Wataḥṣudu bihi shawkatahum,

and mow down their strength,

وَتُفَرِّقُ بِهِ عَدَدَهُمْ.

Watufarriqu bihi ʿadadahum.

scattering their numbers.

اللَّهُمَّ وَامْزُجْ مِيَاهَهُمْ بِالْوَبَاءِ

Allāhumma wa-umzuj miyāhahum bi-al-wabāʾi

O God, mix their waters with pestilence

وَأَطْعِمَتَهُمْ بِالْأَدْوَاءِ،

Wa-aṭʿimatahum bi-al-adwāʾi,

and their food with disease.

وَارْمِ بِلَادَهُمْ بِالْخُسُوفِ،

Wa-irmi bilādahum bi-al-khusūfi,

Strike their lands with sinkings of the earth,

وَأَلِحَّ عَلَيْهَا بِالْقُذُوفِ،

Wa-aliḥḥa ʿalayhā bi-al-qudhūfi,

assail them with repeated downpours of destruction,

وَافْرَعْهَا بِالْمُحُولِ،

Wa-ifraʿhā bi-al-muḥūli,

and beat them down with drought.

وَاجْعَلْ مِيَرَهُمْ فِي أَحَصِّ أَرْضِكَ

Wa-ijʿal miyarahum fī aḥaṣṣi arḍika

Put their provisions in the most barren part of Your earth,

وَأَبْعَدِهَا عَنْهُمْ،

Wa-abʿadihā ʿanhum,

at its farthest distance from them,

وَامْنَعْ حُصُونَهَا مِنْهُمْ،

Wa-imnaʿ ḥuṣūnahā minhum,

and deny them access to its strongholds.

أَصِبْهُمْ بِالْجُوعِ الْمُقِيمِ وَالسُّقْمِ الْأَلِيمِ.

Aṣibhum bi-al-jūʿi al-muqīmi wa-al-suqmi al-alīmi.

Afflict them with lasting hunger and painful sickness.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَيُّمَا غَازٍ غَزَاهُمْ مِنْ أَهْلِ مِلَّتِكَ

Allāhumma wa-ayyumā ghāzin ghazāhum min ahli millatika

O God, whenever one of the people of Your faith campaigns against them,

أَوْ مُجَاهِدٍ جَاهَدَهُمْ مِنْ أَتْبَاعِ سُنَّتِكَ

Aw mujāhidin jāhadahum min atbāʿi sunnatika

or a fighter among the followers of Your way strives against them,

لِيَكُونَ دِينُكَ الْأَعْلَى

Liyakūna dīnuka al-aʿlā

so that Your religion may stand highest,

وَحِزْبُكَ الْأَقْوَى

Waḥizbuka al-aqwā

Your party be strongest,

وَحَظُّكَ الْأَوْفَى،

Waḥaẓẓuka al-awfā,

and Your share be fullest,

فَلَقِّهِ الْيُسْرَ،

Falaqqihi al-yusra,

let ease meet him,

وَهَيِّئْ لَهُ الْأَمْرَ،

Wahayyiʾ lahu al-amra,

arrange his affairs for him,

وَتَوَلَّهُ بِالنُّجْحِ،

Watawallahu bi-al-nujḥi,

care for him by granting success,

وَتَخَيَّرْ لَهُ الْأَصْحَابَ،

Watakhayyar lahu al-aṣḥāba,

choose his companions well,

وَاسْتَقْوِ لَهُ الظَّهْرَ،

Wa-istaqwi lahu al-ẓahra,

and give him strong support.

وَأَسْبِغْ عَلَيْهِ فِي النَّفَقَةِ،

Wa-asbigh ʿalayhi fī al-nafaqati,

Provide generously for his expenses,

وَمَتِّعْهُ بِالنَّشَاطِ،

Wamattiʿhu bi-al-nashāṭi,

bless him with vigour,

وَأَطْفِ عَنْهُ حَرَارَةَ الشَّوْقِ،

Wa-aṭfi ʿanhu ḥarārata al-shawqi,

cool the burning of his longing for home,

وَأَجِرْهُ مِنْ غَمِّ الْوَحْشَةِ،

Wa-ajirhu min ghammi al-waḥshati,

protect him from the sorrow of loneliness,

وَأَنْسِهِ ذِكْرَ الْأَهْلِ وَالْوَلَدِ،

Wa-ansihi dhikra al-ahli wa-al-waladi,

and make him forget thoughts of family and children.

وَأْثُرْ لَهُ حُسْنَ النِّيَّةِ،

Waʾthur lahu ḥusna al-niyyati,

Choose a good intention for him,

وَتَوَلَّهُ بِالْعَافِيَةِ،

Watawallahu bi-al-ʿāfiyati,

watch over his wellbeing,

وَأَصْحِبْهُ السَّلَامَةَ،

Wa-aṣḥibhu al-salāmata,

and let safety accompany him.

وَأَعْفِهِ مِنَ الْجُبْنِ،

Wa-aʿfihi mina al-jubni,

Free him from cowardice,

وَأَلْهِمْهُ الْجُرْأَةَ،

Wa-alhimhu al-jurʾata,

inspire him with courage,

وَارْزُقْهُ الشِّدَّةَ،

Wa-urzuqhu al-shiddata,

grant him firmness,

وَأَيِّدْهُ بِالنُّصْرَةِ،

Wa-ayyid-hu bi-al-nuṣrati,

and support him with victory.

وَعَلِّمْهُ السِّيَرَ وَالسُّنَنَ،

Waʿallimhu al-siyara wa-al-sunana,

Teach him right conduct and established ways,

وَسَدِّدْهُ فِي الْحُكْمِ،

Wasaddid-hu fī al-ḥukmi,

guide him to sound judgement,

وَاعْزِلْ عَنْهُ الرِّيَاءَ،

Wa-iʿzil ʿanhu al-riyāʾa,

keep ostentation away from him,

وَخَلِّصْهُ مِنَ السُّمْعَةِ،

Wakhalliṣhu mina al-sumʿati,

and free him from seeking a reputation.

وَاجْعَلْ فِكْرَهُ وَذِكْرَهُ

Wa-ijʿal fikrahu wadhikrahu

Let his thought and remembrance,

وَظَعْنَهُ وَإِقَامَتَهُ فِيكَ وَلَكَ،

Waẓaʿnahu wa-iqāmatahu fīka walaka,

his travelling and staying, be centred on You and for You.

فَإِذَا صَافَّ عَدُوَّكَ وَعَدُوَّهُ

Fa-idhā ṣāffa ʿaduwwaka waʿaduwwahu

When he faces Your enemy and his own in battle,

فَقَلِّلْهُمْ فِي عَيْنِهِ

Faqallilhum fī ʿaynihi

make them seem few in his eyes,

وَصَغِّرْ شَأْنَهُمْ فِي قَلْبِهِ،

Waṣaghghir shaʾnahum fī qalbihi,

make their importance small in his heart,

وَأَدِلْ لَهُ مِنْهُمْ

Wa-adil lahu minhum

and grant him the upper hand over them,

وَلَا تُدِلْهُمْ مِنْهُ.

Walā tudilhum minhu.

without giving them the upper hand over him.

فَإِنْ خَتَمْتَ لَهُ بِالسَّعَادَةِ

Fa-in khatamta lahu bi-al-saʿādati

If You bring his life to a close in blessedness

وَقَضَيْتَ لَهُ بِالشَّهَادَةِ

Waqaḍayta lahu bi-al-shahādati

and decree martyrdom for him,

فَبَعْدَ أَنْ يَجْتَاحَ عَدُوَّكَ بِالْقَتْلِ

Fabaʿda an yajtāḥa ʿaduwwaka bi-al-qatli

let it be after he has swept through Your enemy with killing,

وَبَعْدَ أَنْ يَجْهَدَ بِهِمُ الْأَسْرُ،

Wabaʿda an yajhada bihimu al-asru,

after captivity has worn them down,

وَبَعْدَ أَنْ تَأْمَنَ أَطْرَافُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ،

Wabaʿda an taʾmana aṭrāfu al-muslimīna,

after the Muslim frontiers have become safe,

وَبَعْدَ أَنْ يُوَلِّيَ عَدُوُّكَ مُدْبِرِينَ.

Wabaʿda an yuwalliya ʿaduwwuka mudbirīna.

and after Your enemies have turned and fled.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَيُّمَا مُسْلِمٍ خَلَفَ غَازِيًا

Allāhumma wa-ayyumā muslimin khalafa ghāziyan

O God, whichever Muslim takes the place of a campaigning soldier

أَوْ مُرَابِطًا فِي دَارِهِ،

Aw murābiṭan fī dārihi,

or frontier guard in caring for his home,

أَوْ تَعَهَّدَ خَالِفِيهِ فِي غَيْبَتِهِ،

Aw taʿahhada khālifīhi fī ghaybatihi,

tends those he leaves behind during his absence,

أَوْ أَعَانَهُ بِطَائِفَةٍ مِنْ مَالِهِ،

Aw aʿānahu biṭāʾifatin min mālihi,

helps him with a portion of his wealth,

أَوْ أَمَدَّهُ بِعِتَادٍ،

Aw amaddahu biʿitādin,

provides him with equipment,

أَوْ شَحَذَهُ عَلَى جِهَادٍ،

Aw shaḥadhahu ʿalā jihādin,

encourages him in his struggle,

أَوْ أَتْبَعَهُ فِي وَجْهِهِ دَعْوَةً،

Aw atbaʿahu fī wajhihi daʿwatan,

sends a prayer after him as he sets out,

أَوْ رَعَى لَهُ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ حُرْمَةً،

Aw raʿā lahu min warāʾihi ḥurmatan,

or safeguards what is sacred to him while he is away,

فَأْجِرْ لَهُ مِثْلَ أَجْرِهِ،

Faʾjir lahu mithla ajrihi,

give that Muslim a reward equal to his,

وَزْنًا بِوَزْنٍ وَمِثْلًا بِمِثْلٍ،

Waznan biwaznin wamithlan bimithlin,

measure for measure and like for like.

وَعَوِّضْهُ مِنْ فِعْلِهِ عِوَضًا حَاضِرًا

Waʿawwiḍhu min fiʿlihi ʿiwaḍan ḥāḍiran

Reward his deed with an immediate recompense,

يَتَعَجَّلُ بِهِ نَفْعَ مَا قَدَّمَ

Yataʿajjalu bihi nafʿa mā qaddama

so that he may promptly receive the benefit of what he has offered

وَسُرُورَ مَا أَتَى بِهِ،

Wasurūra mā atā bihi,

and the joy of what he has done,

إِلَى أَنْ يَنْتَهِيَ بِهِ الْوَقْتُ

Ilā an yantahiya bihi al-waqtu

until the time comes for him to reach

إِلَى مَا أَجْرَيْتَ لَهُ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

Ilā mā ajrayta lahu min faḍlika

what You have allotted him from Your bounty

وَأَعْدَدْتَ لَهُ مِنْ كَرَامَتِكَ.

Wa-aʿdadta lahu min karāmatika.

and prepared for him from Your honour.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَيُّمَا مُسْلِمٍ أَهَمَّهُ أَمْرُ الْإِسْلَامِ

Allāhumma wa-ayyumā muslimin ahammahu amru al-islāmi

O God, whichever Muslim is concerned for the cause of Islam

وَأَحْزَنَهُ تَحَزُّبُ أَهْلِ الشِّرْكِ عَلَيْهِمْ،

Wa-aḥzanahu taḥazzubu ahli al-shirki ʿalayhim,

and grieved by the polytheists uniting against the Muslims,

فَنَوَى غَزْوًا أَوْ هَمَّ بِجِهَادٍ

Fanawā ghazwan aw hamma bijihādin

and intends to campaign or take part in the struggle,

فَقَعَدَ بِهِ ضَعْفٌ

Faqaʿada bihi ḍaʿfun

but weakness keeps him seated,

أَوْ أَبْطَأَتْ بِهِ فَاقَةٌ،

Aw abṭaʾat bihi fāqatun,

poverty delays him,

أَوْ أَخَّرَهُ عَنْهُ حَادِثٌ،

Aw akhkharahu ʿanhu ḥādithun,

an event holds him back,

أَوْ عَرَضَ لَهُ دُونَ إِرَادَتِهِ مَانِعٌ،

Aw ʿaraḍa lahu dūna irādatihi māniʿun,

or an obstacle comes between him and his intention,

فَاكْتُبِ اسْمَهُ فِي الْعَابِدِينَ،

Fa-uktubi ismahu fī al-ʿābidīna,

record his name among Your worshippers,

وَأَوْجِبْ لَهُ ثَوَابَ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ،

Wa-awjib lahu thawāba al-mujāhidīna,

grant him the reward of those who strive in Your cause,

وَاجْعَلْهُ فِي نِظَامِ الشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ.

Wa-ijʿalhu fī niẓāmi al-shuhadāʾi wa-al-ṣāliḥīna.

and place him in the company of the martyrs and the righteous.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِكَ وَرَسُولِكَ

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin ʿabdika warasūlika

O God, bless Muhammad, Your servant and Messenger,

وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ،

Wa-āli muḥammadin,

and the family of Muhammad,

صَلَاةً عَالِيَةً عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ

Ṣalātan ʿāliyatan ʿalā al-ṣalawāti

with a blessing raised above all blessings,

مُشْرِفَةً فَوْقَ التَّحِيَّاتِ،

Mushrifatan fawqa al-taḥiyyāti,

towering above all greetings,

صَلَاةً لَا يَنْتَهِي أَمَدُهَا

Ṣalātan lā yantahī amaduhā

a blessing whose duration has no end

وَلَا يَنْقَطِعُ عَدَدُهَا،

Walā yanqaṭiʿu ʿadaduhā,

and whose repetition never ceases,

كَأَتَمِّ مَا مَضَى مِنْ صَلَوَاتِكَ

Kaʾatammi mā maḍā min ṣalawātika

like the most complete of Your past blessings

عَلَى أَحَدٍ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكَ،

ʿalā aḥadin min awliyāʾika,

upon any of Your friends.

إِنَّكَ الْمَنَّانُ الْحَمِيدُ

Innaka al-mannānu al-ḥamīdu

You are the Giver of all blessings, worthy of all praise,

الْمُبْدِئُ الْمُعِيدُ

Al-mubdiʾu al-muʿīdu

the One who brings forth and brings back,

الْفَعَّالُ لِمَا تُرِيدُ.

Al-faʿʿālu limā turīdu.

who does whatever You will.

الدُّعَاءُ ٢٨

Al-duʿāʾu 28

Prayer 28

فِي التَّفَزُّعِ إِلَى اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ

Fī al-tafazzuʿi ilā Allāhi ʿazza wajalla

Turning in distress to God, mighty and majestic

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَخْلَصْتُ بِانْقِطَاعِي إِلَيْكَ،

Allāhumma innī akhlaṣtu binqiṭāʿī ilayka,

O God, I have devoted myself sincerely to You alone,

وَأَقْبَلْتُ بِكُلِّي عَلَيْكَ،

Wa-aqbaltu bikullī ʿalayka,

turning my whole being towards You.

وَصَرَفْتُ وَجْهِي عَمَّنْ يَحْتَاجُ إِلَى رِفْدِكَ،

Waṣaraftu wajhī ʿamman yaḥtāju ilā rifdika,

I have turned away from those who themselves need Your support,

وَقَلَبْتُ مَسْأَلَتِي عَمَّنْ لَمْ يَسْتَغْنِ عَنْ فَضْلِكَ،

Waqalabtu masʾalatī ʿamman lam yastaghni ʿan faḍlika,

withdrawing my requests from those who depend on Your bounty.

وَرَأَيْتُ أَنَّ طَلَبَ الْمُحْتَاجِ إِلَى الْمُحْتَاجِ

Waraʾaytu anna ṭalaba al-muḥtāji ilā al-muḥtāji

I have seen that a needy person asking another needy person

سَفَهٌ مِنْ رَأْيِهِ وَضَلَّةٌ مِنْ عَقْلِهِ.

Safahun min raʾyihi waḍallatun min ʿaqlihi.

shows foolish judgement and misguided understanding.

فَكَمْ قَدْ رَأَيْتُ يَا إِلَهِي مِنْ أُنَاسٍ

Fakam qad raʾaytu yā ilāhī min unāsin

How many people have I seen, my God,

طَلَبُوا الْعِزَّ بِغَيْرِكَ فَذَلُّوا،

Ṭalabū al-ʿizza bighayrika fadhallū,

seek honour through someone other than You and become abased,

وَرَامُوا الثَّرْوَةَ مِنْ سِوَاكَ فَافْتَقَرُوا،

Warāmū al-tharwata min siwāka fa-iftaqarū,

seek riches elsewhere and become poor,

وَحَاوَلُوا الِارْتِفَاعَ فَاتَّضَعُوا!

Waḥāwalū al-irtifāʿa fa-ittaḍaʿū!

and seek advancement only to fall low!

فَصَحَّ بِمُعَايَنَةِ أَمْثَالِهِمْ حَازِمٌ

Faṣaḥḥa bimuʿāyanati amthālihim ḥāzimun

Seeing such examples has set right a person of sound judgement,

وَفَّقَهُ اعْتِبَارُهُ

Waffaqahu iʿtibāruhu

whose reflection has led him to success

وَأَرْشَدَهُ إِلَى طَرِيقِ صَوَابِهِ اخْتِيَارُهُ.

Wa-arshadahu ilā ṭarīqi ṣawābihi ikhtiyāruhu.

and whose discernment has guided him onto the right path.

فَأَنْتَ يَا مَوْلَايَ دُونَ كُلِّ مَسْؤُولٍ مَوْضِعُ مَسْأَلَتِي،

Fa-anta yā mawlāya dūna kulli masʾūlin mawḍiʿu masʾalatī,

You, my Master, are the One I ask above all others,

وَدُونَ كُلِّ مَطْلُوبٍ إِلَيْهِ وَلِيُّ حَاجَتِي.

Wadūna kulli maṭlūbin ilayhi waliyyu ḥājatī.

the One who cares for my need above all who might be approached.

أَنْتَ الْمَخْصُوصُ قَبْلَ كُلِّ مَدْعُوٍّ بِدَعْوَتِي،

Anta al-makhṣūṣu qabla kulli madʿuwwin bidaʿwatī,

I direct my prayer to You before anyone who might be called upon.

لَا يَشْرَكُكَ أَحَدٌ فِي رَجَائِي،

Lā yashrakuka aḥadun fī rajāʾī,

No one shares with You the hope I place in You,

وَلَا يَتَّفِقُ أَحَدٌ مَعَكَ فِي دُعَائِي،

Walā yattafiqu aḥadun maʿaka fī duʿāʾī,

no one stands beside You in my prayer,

وَلَا يَنْظِمُهُ وَإِيَّاكَ نِدَائِي.

Walā yanẓimuhu wa-iyyāka nidāʾī.

and my calling does not join another with You.

لَكَ يَا إِلَهِي وَحْدَانِيَّةُ الْعَدَدِ،

Laka yā ilāhī waḥdāniyyatu al-ʿadadi,

Yours, my God, is a oneness without a second,

وَمَلَكَةُ الْقُدْرَةِ الصَّمَدِ،

Wamalakatu al-qudrati al-ṣamadi,

the mastery of power that needs no support,

وَفَضِيلَةُ الْحَوْلِ وَالْقُوَّةِ،

Wafaḍīlatu al-ḥawli wa-al-quwwati,

supremacy in might and strength,

وَدَرَجَةُ الْعُلُوِّ وَالرِّفْعَةِ.

Wadarajatu al-ʿuluwwi wa-al-rifʿati.

and the highest station of majesty and exaltation.

وَمَنْ سِوَاكَ مَرْحُومٌ فِي عُمُرِهِ،

Waman siwāka marḥūmun fī ʿumurihi,

Everyone other than You depends on mercy throughout life,

مَغْلُوبٌ عَلَى أَمْرِهِ،

Maghlūbun ʿalā amrihi,

lacks full control of his affairs,

مَقْهُورٌ عَلَى شَأْنِهِ،

Maqhūrun ʿalā shaʾnihi,

and is subject to powers beyond him,

مُخْتَلِفُ الْحَالَاتِ،

Mukhtalifu al-ḥālāti,

passing through changing states

مُتَنَقِّلٌ فِي الصِّفَاتِ.

Mutanaqqilun fī al-ṣifāti.

and shifting qualities.

فَتَعَالَيْتَ عَنِ الْأَشْبَاهِ وَالْأَضْدَادِ،

Fataʿālayta ʿani al-ashbāhi wa-al-aḍdādi,

You are far above having likenesses or opposites,

وَتَكَبَّرْتَ عَنِ الْأَمْثَالِ وَالْأَنْدَادِ،

Watakabbarta ʿani al-amthāli wa-al-andādi,

too great to have equals or rivals.

فَسُبْحَانَكَ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ.

Fasubḥānaka lā ilāha illā anta.

Glory be to You; there is no god but You.

الدُّعَاءُ ٢٩

Al-duʿāʾu 29

Prayer 29

إِذَا قُتِّرَ عَلَيْهِ الرِّزْقُ

Idhā quttira ʿalayhi al-rizqu

When his provision became restricted

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ ابْتَلَيْتَنَا فِي أَرْزَاقِنَا بِسُوءِ الظَّنِّ

Allāhumma innaka ibtalaytanā fī arzāqinā bisūʾi al-ẓanni

O God, our trial concerning our provision has been mistrust,

وَفِي آجَالِنَا بِطُولِ الْأَمَلِ،

Wafī ājālinā biṭūli al-amali,

and concerning our lifespan, hopes stretched far into the future,

حَتَّى الْتَمَسْنَا أَرْزَاقَكَ مِنْ عِنْدِ الْمَرْزُوقِينَ،

Ḥattā iltamasnā arzāqaka min ʿindi al-marzūqīna,

until we sought Your sustenance from those You sustain

وَطَمِعْنَا بِآمَالِنَا فِي أَعْمَارِ الْمُعَمَّرِينَ.

Waṭamiʿnā biʾāmālinā fī aʿmāri al-muʿammarīna.

and hoped to live as long as those granted many years.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

So bless Muhammad and his family,

وَهَبْ لَنَا يَقِينًا صَادِقًا

Wahab lanā yaqīnan ṣādiqan

and give us true certainty

تَكْفِينَا بِهِ مِنْ مَؤُونَةِ الطَّلَبِ،

Takfīnā bihi min maʾūnati al-ṭalabi,

through which You relieve us of the burden of seeking provision.

وَأَلْهِمْنَا ثِقَةً خَالِصَةً

Wa-alhimnā thiqatan khāliṣatan

Inspire us with unclouded trust

تُعْفِينَا بِهَا مِنْ شِدَّةِ النَّصَبِ،

Tuʿfīnā bihā min shiddati al-naṣabi,

through which You spare us exhausting toil.

وَاجْعَلْ مَا صَرَّحْتَ بِهِ مِنْ عِدَتِكَ فِي وَحْيِكَ

Wa-ijʿal mā ṣarraḥta bihi min ʿidatika fī waḥyika

Let the promise You have clearly stated in Your revelation,

وَأَتْبَعْتَهُ مِنْ قَسَمِكَ فِي كِتَابِكَ

Wa-atbaʿtahu min qasamika fī kitābika

and confirmed with Your oath in Your Book,

قَاطِعًا لِاهْتِمَامِنَا بِالرِّزْقِ الَّذِي تَكَفَّلْتَ بِهِ

Qāṭiʿan lihtimāminā bi-al-rizqi alladhī takaffalta bihi

put an end to our worry over the sustenance You have undertaken to give,

وَحَسْمًا لِلِاشْتِغَالِ بِمَا ضَمِنْتَ الْكِفَايَةَ لَهُ.

Waḥasman li-l-ishtighāli bimā ḍaminta al-kifāyata lahu.

and end our preoccupation with what You have promised to provide.

فَقُلْتَ وَقَوْلُكَ الْحَقُّ الْأَصْدَقُ،

Faqulta waqawluka al-ḥaqqu al-aṣdaqu,

For You have spoken, and Your word is the truest truth;

وَأَقْسَمْتَ وَقَسَمُكَ الْأَبَرُّ الْأَوْفَى:

Wa-aqsamta waqasamuka al-abarru al-awfā:

You have sworn, and Your oath is the most faithful and sure:

«وَفِي السَّمَاءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَ».

«wafī al-samāʾi rizqukum wamā tūʿadūna».

“In heaven is your provision, and all that you are promised.”

ثُمَّ قُلْتَ:

Thumma qulta:

Then You said:

«فَوَرَبِّ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُ لَحَقٌّ

«fawarabbi al-samāʾi wa-al-arḍi innahu laḥaqqun

“By the Lord of heaven and earth, it is indeed true,

مِثْلَ مَا أَنَّكُمْ تَنْطِقُونَ».

Mithla mā annakum tanṭiqūna».

as surely as you speak.”

الدُّعَاءُ ٣٠

Al-duʿāʾu 30

Prayer 30

فِي الْمَعُونَةِ عَلَى قَضَاءِ الدَّيْنِ

Fī al-maʿūnati ʿalā qaḍāʾi al-dayni

Asking for help to repay debt

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَهَبْ لِيَ الْعَافِيَةَ مِنْ دَيْنٍ

Wahab liya al-ʿāfiyata min daynin

Grant me freedom from debt

تُخْلِقُ بِهِ وَجْهِي،

Tukhliqu bihi wajhī,

through which You wear away my dignity,

وَيَحَارُ فِيهِ ذِهْنِي،

Wayaḥāru fīhi dhihnī,

my mind becomes bewildered,

وَيَتَشَعَّبُ لَهُ فِكْرِي،

Wayatashaʿʿabu lahu fikrī,

my thoughts scatter,

وَيَطُولُ بِمُمَارَسَتِهِ شُغْلِي.

Wayaṭūlu bimumārasatihi shughlī.

and dealing with it keeps me occupied for so long.

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ يَا رَبِّ مِنْ هَمِّ الدَّيْنِ وَفِكْرِهِ،

Wa-aʿūdhu bika yā rabbi min hammi al-dayni wafikrihi,

My Lord, I seek Your protection from debt's worries and thoughts,

وَشُغْلِ الدَّيْنِ وَسَهَرِهِ.

Washughli al-dayni wasaharihi.

from its consuming demands and sleepless nights.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ وَأَعِذْنِي مِنْهُ.

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi wa-aʿidhnī minhu.

Bless Muhammad and his family, and protect me from it.

وَأَسْتَجِيرُ بِكَ يَا رَبِّ مِنْ ذِلَّتِهِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ

Wa-astajīru bika yā rabbi min dhillatihi fī al-ḥayāti

My Lord, I seek refuge in You from its humiliation in life

وَمِنْ تَبِعَتِهِ بَعْدَ الْوَفَاةِ.

Wamin tabiʿatihi baʿda al-wafāti.

and its liability after death.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَجِرْنِي مِنْهُ بِوُسْعٍ فَاضِلٍ

Wa-ajirnī minhu biwusʿin fāḍilin

and shelter me from it with ample means

أَوْ كَفَافٍ وَاصِلٍ.

Aw kafāfin wāṣilin.

or a steady supply of enough to meet my needs.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَاحْجُبْنِي عَنِ السَّرَفِ وَالِازْدِيَادِ،

Wa-uḥjubnī ʿani al-sarafi wa-al-izdiyādi,

Keep me from extravagance and the desire for ever more,

وَقَوِّمْنِي بِالْبَذْلِ وَالِاقْتِصَادِ،

Waqawwimnī bi-al-badhli wa-al-iqtiṣādi,

set me right through generosity and moderation,

وَعَلِّمْنِي حُسْنَ التَّقْدِيرِ،

Waʿallimnī ḥusna al-taqdīri,

and teach me to manage my means wisely.

وَاقْبِضْنِي بِلُطْفِكَ عَنِ التَّبْذِيرِ،

Wa-iqbiḍnī biluṭfika ʿani al-tabdhīri,

With Your gentle care, restrain me from waste.

وَأَجْرِ مِنْ أَسْبَابِ الْحَلَالِ أَرْزَاقِي،

Wa-ajri min asbābi al-ḥalāli arzāqī,

Let my provision flow through lawful means,

وَوَجِّهْ فِي أَبْوَابِ الْبِرِّ إِنْفَاقِي،

Wawajjih fī abwābi al-birri infāqī,

and direct my spending towards goodness.

وَازْوِ عَنِّي مِنَ الْمَالِ مَا يُحْدِثُ لِي مَخِيلَةً

Wa-izwi ʿannī mina al-māli mā yuḥdithu lī makhīlatan

Keep from me any wealth that would make me arrogant,

أَوْ تَأَدِّيًا إِلَى بَغْيٍ،

Aw taʾaddiyan ilā baghyin,

lead me into wrongdoing,

أَوْ مَا أَتَعَقَّبُ مِنْهُ طُغْيَانًا.

Aw mā ataʿaqqabu minhu ṭughyānan.

or leave me with transgression as its consequence.

اللَّهُمَّ حَبِّبْ إِلَيَّ صُحْبَةَ الْفُقَرَاءِ،

Allāhumma ḥabbib ilayya ṣuḥbata al-fuqarāʾi,

O God, make the company of the poor dear to me,

وَأَعِنِّي عَلَى صُحْبَتِهِمْ بِحُسْنِ الصَّبْرِ.

Wa-aʿinnī ʿalā ṣuḥbatihim biḥusni al-ṣabri.

and help me keep their company with gracious patience.

وَمَا زَوَيْتَ عَنِّي مِنْ مَتَاعِ الدُّنْيَا الْفَانِيَةِ

Wamā zawayta ʿannī min matāʿi al-dunyā al-fāniyati

Whatever enjoyment of this passing world You withhold from me,

فَاذْخَرْهُ لِي فِي خَزَائِنِكَ الْبَاقِيَةِ،

Fa-idhkharhu lī fī khazāʾinika al-bāqiyati,

store it for me in Your enduring treasuries.

وَاجْعَلْ مَا خَوَّلْتَنِي مِنْ حُطَامِهَا

Wa-ijʿal mā khawwaltanī min ḥuṭāmihā

Let what You have granted me of its fleeting possessions,

وَعَجَّلْتَ لِي مِنْ مَتَاعِهَا

Waʿajjalta lī min matāʿihā

and the comforts You have given me now,

بُلْغَةً إِلَى جِوَارِكَ،

Bulghatan ilā jiwārika,

be provisions for reaching Your nearness,

وَوُصْلَةً إِلَى قُرْبِكَ،

Wawuṣlatan ilā qurbika,

a means of drawing close to You,

وَذَرِيعَةً إِلَى جَنَّتِكَ.

Wadharīʿatan ilā jannatika.

and a path to Your Garden.

إِنَّكَ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ،

Innaka dhū al-faḍli al-ʿaẓīmi,

Yours is immense bounty,

وَأَنْتَ الْجَوَادُ الْكَرِيمُ.

Wa-anta al-jawādu al-karīmu.

and You are generous and noble.

Prayer 31

بِالتَّوْبَةِ

Bi-al-tawbati

In repentance

اللَّهُمَّ يَا مَنْ لَا يَصِفُهُ نَعْتُ الْوَاصِفِينَ،

Allāhumma yā man lā yaṣifuhu naʿtu al-wāṣifīna,

O God, whom no description can encompass,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يُجَاوِزُهُ رَجَاءُ الرَّاجِينَ،

Wayā man lā yujāwizuhu rajāʾu al-rājīna,

beyond whom no hope can reach,

وَيَا مَنْ لَا يَضِيعُ لَدَيْهِ أَجْرُ الْمُحْسِنِينَ،

Wayā man lā yaḍīʿu ladayhi ajru al-muḥsinīna,

with whom the reward of those who do good is never lost,

وَيَا مَنْ هُوَ مُنْتَهَى خَوْفِ الْعَابِدِينَ،

Wayā man huwa muntahā khawfi al-ʿābidīna,

You are the furthest reach of Your worshippers' fear

وَيَا مَنْ هُوَ غَايَةُ خَشْيَةِ الْمُتَّقِينَ.

Wayā man huwa ghāyatu khashyati al-muttaqīna.

and the ultimate object of the reverence of the God-conscious.

هَذَا مَقَامُ مَنْ تَدَاوَلَتْهُ أَيْدِي الذُّنُوبِ،

Hādhā maqāmu man tadāwalat-hu aydī al-dhunūbi,

Here stands one passed from hand to hand by sins,

وَقَادَتْهُ أَزِمَّةُ الْخَطَايَا،

Waqādat-hu azimmatu al-khaṭāyā,

led by the reins of wrongdoing,

وَاسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِ الشَّيْطَانُ،

Wa-istaḥwadha ʿalayhi al-shayṭānu,

and overcome by Satan.

فَقَصَّرَ عَمَّا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ تَفْرِيطًا،

Faqaṣṣara ʿammā amarta bihi tafrīṭan,

Through negligence, he fell short of what You commanded,

وَتَعَاطَى مَا نَهَيْتَ عَنْهُ تَغْرِيرًا،

Wataʿāṭā mā nahayta ʿanhu taghrīran,

and, deceiving himself, undertook what You forbade,

كَالْجَاهِلِ بِقُدْرَتِكَ عَلَيْهِ

Ka-al-jāhili biqudratika ʿalayhi

as though unaware of Your power over him

أَوْ كَالْمُنْكِرِ فَضْلَ إِحْسَانِكَ إِلَيْهِ،

Aw ka-al-munkiri faḍla iḥsānika ilayhi,

or denying the generosity of Your goodness towards him.

حَتَّى إِذَا انْفَتَحَ لَهُ بَصَرُ الْهُدَى

Ḥattā idhā infataḥa lahu baṣaru al-hudā

Then, when his eyes opened to guidance

وَتَقَشَّعَتْ عَنْهُ سَحَائِبُ الْعَمَى،

Wataqashshaʿat ʿanhu saḥāʾibu al-ʿamā,

and the clouds of blindness cleared,

أَحْصَى مَا ظَلَمَ بِهِ نَفْسَهُ

Aḥṣā mā ẓalama bihi nafsahu

he counted the ways he had wronged himself

وَفَكَّرَ فِيمَا خَالَفَ بِهِ رَبَّهُ،

Wafakkara fīmā khālafa bihi rabbahu,

and reflected on how he had opposed his Lord.

فَرَأَى كَبِيرَ عِصْيَانِهِ كَبِيرًا

Faraʾā kabīra ʿiṣyānihi kabīran

He saw his great disobedience for the great thing it was,

وَجَلِيلَ مُخَالَفَتِهِ جَلِيلًا،

Wajalīla mukhālafatihi jalīlan,

and his grave defiance for the grave thing it was.

فَأَقْبَلَ نَحْوَكَ مُؤَمِّلًا لَكَ مُسْتَحْيِيًا مِنْكَ،

Fa-aqbala naḥwaka muʾammilan laka mustaḥyiyan minka,

So he turned towards You, hoping in You and ashamed before You,

وَوَجَّهَ رَغْبَتَهُ إِلَيْكَ ثِقَةً بِكَ،

Wawajjaha raghbatahu ilayka thiqatan bika,

directing his longing to You with trust in You.

فَأَمَّكَ بِطَمَعِهِ يَقِينًا،

Fa-ammaka biṭamaʿihi yaqīnan,

In certainty, he brought his hope to You;

وَقَصَدَكَ بِخَوْفِهِ إِخْلَاصًا،

Waqaṣadaka bikhawfihi ikhlāṣan,

in sincerity, he brought his fear to You.

قَدْ خَلَا طَمَعُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَطْمُوعٍ فِيهِ غَيْرِكَ،

Qad khalā ṭamaʿuhu min kulli maṭmūʿin fīhi ghayrika,

His hope had let go of everything hoped for except You,

وَأَفْرَخَ رَوْعُهُ مِنْ كُلِّ مَحْذُورٍ مِنْهُ سِوَاكَ.

Wa-afrakha rawʿuhu min kulli maḥdhūrin minhu siwāka.

and his fear had grown still before everything feared except You.

فَمَثَلَ بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ مُتَضَرِّعًا،

Famathala bayna yadayka mutaḍarriʿan,

He stood before You pleading,

وَغَمَّضَ بَصَرَهُ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ مُتَخَشِّعًا،

Waghammaḍa baṣarahu ilā al-arḍi mutakhashshiʿan,

lowering his eyes towards the earth in humility,

وَطَأْطَأَ رَأْسَهُ لِعِزَّتِكَ مُتَذَلِّلًا،

Waṭaʾṭaʾa raʾsahu liʿizzatika mutadhallilan,

bowing his head before Your might in submission.

وَأَبَثَّكَ مِنْ سِرِّهِ

Wa-abaththaka min sirrihi

Humbly, he disclosed to You of his secrets

مَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنْهُ خُضُوعًا،

Mā anta aʿlamu bihi minhu khuḍūʿan,

what You know better than he does,

وَعَدَّدَ مِنْ ذُنُوبِهِ

Waʿaddada min dhunūbihi

and reverently recounted his sins,

مَا أَنْتَ أَحْصَى لَهَا خُشُوعًا،

Mā anta aḥṣā lahā khushūʿan,

of which Your reckoning is more complete.

وَاسْتَغَاثَ بِكَ مِنْ عَظِيمِ مَا وَقَعَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِكَ

Wa-istaghātha bika min ʿaẓīmi mā waqaʿa bihi fī ʿilmika

He sought Your help against the enormity of what You know befell him,

وَقَبِيحِ مَا فَضَحَهُ فِي حُكْمِكَ

Waqabīḥi mā faḍaḥahu fī ḥukmika

and the ugliness of what has disgraced him in Your judgement:

مِنْ ذُنُوبٍ أَدْبَرَتْ لَذَّاتُهَا فَذَهَبَتْ،

Min dhunūbin adbarat ladhdhātuhā fadhahabat,

sins whose pleasures have receded and vanished,

وَأَقَامَتْ تَبِعَاتُهَا فَلَزِمَتْ.

Wa-aqāmat tabiʿātuhā falazimat.

while their consequences remain fastened to him.

لَا يُنْكِرُ يَا إِلَهِي عَدْلَكَ إِنْ عَاقَبْتَهُ،

Lā yunkiru yā ilāhī ʿadlaka in ʿāqabtahu,

My God, he does not deny Your justice if You punish him,

وَلَا يَسْتَعْظِمُ عَفْوَكَ إِنْ عَفَوْتَ عَنْهُ وَرَحِمْتَهُ،

Walā yastaʿẓimu ʿafwaka in ʿafawta ʿanhu waraḥimtahu,

nor think Your pardon too great if You pardon him and show him mercy.

لِأَنَّكَ الرَّبُّ الْكَرِيمُ

Liʾannaka al-rabbu al-karīmu

For You are the generous Lord,

الَّذِي لَا يَتَعَاظَمُهُ غُفْرَانُ الذَّنْبِ الْعَظِيمِ.

Alladhī lā yataʿāẓamuhu ghufrānu al-dhanbi al-ʿaẓīmi.

for whom forgiving a great sin is never too great a task.

اللَّهُمَّ فَهَا أَنَا ذَا قَدْ جِئْتُكَ مُطِيعًا لِأَمْرِكَ

Allāhumma fahā anā dhā qad jiʾtuka muṭīʿan liʾamrika

O God, here I am, coming to You in obedience to Your command

فِيمَا أَمَرْتَ بِهِ مِنَ الدُّعَاءِ،

Fīmā amarta bihi mina al-duʿāʾi,

by offering the prayer You have commanded,

مُتَنَجِّزًا وَعْدَكَ

Mutanajjizan waʿdaka

seeking the fulfilment of Your promise

فِيمَا وَعَدْتَ بِهِ مِنَ الْإِجَابَةِ،

Fīmā waʿadta bihi mina al-ijābati,

to answer those who pray,

إِذْ تَقُولُ: «ادْعُونِي أَسْتَجِبْ لَكُمْ».

Idh taqūlu: «udʿūnī astajib lakum».

when You say: “Call upon Me; I will answer you.”

اللَّهُمَّ فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَالْقَنِي بِمَغْفِرَتِكَ كَمَا لَقِيتُكَ بِإِقْرَارِي،

Wa-ilqanī bimaghfiratika kamā laqītuka biʾiqrārī,

Meet me with forgiveness, as I have met You with confession.

وَارْفَعْنِي عَنْ مَصَارِعِ الذُّنُوبِ

Wa-irfaʿnī ʿan maṣāriʿi al-dhunūbi

Lift me from the places where sins have struck me down,

كَمَا وَضَعْتُ لَكَ نَفْسِي،

Kamā waḍaʿtu laka nafsī,

as I have lowered myself before You.

وَاسْتُرْنِي بِسِتْرِكَ

Wa-usturnī bisitrika

Cover me with Your protection,

كَمَا تَأَنَّيْتَنِي عَنِ الِانْتِقَامِ مِنِّي.

Kamā taʾannaytanī ʿani al-intiqāmi minnī.

as You have dealt patiently with me and delayed retribution.

اللَّهُمَّ وَثَبِّتْ فِي طَاعَتِكَ نِيَّتِي،

Allāhumma wathabbit fī ṭāʿatika niyyatī,

O God, make my intention firm in obeying You,

وَأَحْكِمْ فِي عِبَادَتِكَ بَصِيرَتِي،

Wa-aḥkim fī ʿibādatika baṣīratī,

and make my insight sound in worshipping You.

وَوَفِّقْنِي مِنَ الْأَعْمَالِ

Wawaffiqnī mina al-aʿmāli

Enable me to perform those deeds

لِمَا تَغْسِلُ بِهِ دَنَسَ الْخَطَايَا عَنِّي،

Limā taghsilu bihi danasa al-khaṭāyā ʿannī,

through which You wash away the stains of my sins.

وَتَوَفَّنِي عَلَى مِلَّتِكَ

Watawaffanī ʿalā millatika

Take me in death as a follower of Your religion

وَمِلَّةِ نَبِيِّكَ مُحَمَّدٍ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

Wamillati nabiyyika muḥammadin ʿalayhi al-salāmu

and the faith of Your Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,

إِذَا تَوَفَّيْتَنِي.

Idhā tawaffaytanī.

when You take me in death.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ فِي مَقَامِي هَذَا

Allāhumma innī atūbu ilayka fī maqāmī hādhā

O God, here where I stand, I turn to You in repentance

مِنْ كَبَائِرِ ذُنُوبِي وَصَغَائِرِهَا،

Min kabāʾiri dhunūbī waṣaghāʾirihā,

for my sins, great and small,

وَبَوَاطِنِ سَيِّئَاتِي وَظَوَاهِرِهَا،

Wabawāṭini sayyiʾātī waẓawāhirihā,

my misdeeds, hidden and visible,

وَسَوَالِفِ زَلَّاتِي وَحَوَادِثِهَا،

Wasawālifi zallātī waḥawādithihā,

and my failings, past and recent,

تَوْبَةَ مَنْ لَا يُحَدِّثُ نَفْسَهُ بِمَعْصِيَةٍ

Tawbata man lā yuḥaddithu nafsahu bimaʿṣiyatin

with the repentance of one who does not entertain disobedience

وَلَا يُضْمِرُ أَنْ يَعُودَ فِي خَطِيئَةٍ.

Walā yuḍmiru an yaʿūda fī khaṭīʾatin.

or harbour an intention to return to sin.

وَقَدْ قُلْتَ يَا إِلَهِي فِي مُحْكَمِ كِتَابِكَ

Waqad qulta yā ilāhī fī muḥkami kitābika

My God, You have said in the clear words of Your Book

إِنَّكَ تَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِكَ،

Innaka taqbalu al-tawbata ʿan ʿibādika,

that You accept repentance from Your servants,

وَتَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ،

Wataʿfū ʿani al-sayyiʾāti,

pardon misdeeds,

وَتُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِينَ،

Watuḥibbu al-tawwābīna,

and love those who turn to You in repentance.

فَاقْبَلْ تَوْبَتِي كَمَا وَعَدْتَ،

Fa-iqbal tawbatī kamā waʿadta,

Accept my repentance as You have promised,

وَاعْفُ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِي كَمَا ضَمِنْتَ،

Wa-uʿfu ʿan sayyiʾātī kamā ḍaminta,

pardon my misdeeds as You have pledged,

وَأَوْجِبْ لِي مَحَبَّتَكَ كَمَا شَرَطْتَ.

Wa-awjib lī maḥabbataka kamā sharaṭta.

and grant me Your love on the terms You have set.

وَلَكَ يَا رَبِّ شَرْطِي أَلَّا أَعُودَ فِي مَكْرُوهِكَ،

Walaka yā rabbi sharṭī allā aʿūda fī makrūhika,

My Lord, I pledge to You that I will not return to what You dislike,

وَضَمَانِي أَلَّا أَرْجِعَ فِي مَذْمُومِكَ،

Waḍamānī allā arjiʿa fī madhmūmika,

I promise not to go back to what You condemn,

وَعَهْدِي أَنْ أَهْجُرَ جَمِيعَ مَعَاصِيكَ.

Waʿahdī an ahjura jamīʿa maʿāṣīka.

and I covenant to leave behind all disobedience to You.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا عَمِلْتُ

Allāhumma innaka aʿlamu bimā ʿamiltu

O God, You know best what I have done,

فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَا عَلِمْتَ،

Fa-ighfir lī mā ʿalimta,

so forgive me for what You know,

وَاصْرِفْنِي بِقُدْرَتِكَ إِلَى مَا أَحْبَبْتَ.

Wa-iṣrifnī biqudratika ilā mā aḥbabta.

and through Your power turn me towards what You love.

اللَّهُمَّ وَعَلَيَّ تَبِعَاتٌ قَدْ حَفِظْتُهُنَّ،

Allāhumma waʿalayya tabiʿātun qad ḥafiẓtuhunna,

O God, I bear liabilities for wrongs I remember

وَتَبِعَاتٌ قَدْ نَسِيتُهُنَّ،

Watabiʿātun qad nasītuhunna,

and wrongs I have forgotten.

وَكُلُّهُنَّ بِعَيْنِكَ الَّتِي لَا تَنَامُ

Wakulluhunna biʿaynika allatī lā tanāmu

All lie before Your eye, which never sleeps,

وَعِلْمِكَ الَّذِي لَا يَنْسَى،

Waʿilmika alladhī lā yansā,

and within Your knowledge, which never forgets.

فَعَوِّضْ مِنْهَا أَهْلَهَا

Faʿawwiḍ minhā ahlahā

Compensate those to whom I owe them,

وَاحْطُطْ عَنِّي وِزْرَهَا،

Wa-uḥṭuṭ ʿannī wizrahā,

remove their burden from me,

وَخَفِّفْ عَنِّي ثِقْلَهَا،

Wakhaffif ʿannī thiqlahā,

lighten their weight upon me,

وَاعْصِمْنِي مِنْ أَنْ أُقَارِفَ مِثْلَهَا.

Wa-iʿṣimnī min an uqārifa mithlahā.

and protect me from committing such wrongs again.

اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنَّهُ لَا وَفَاءَ لِي بِالتَّوْبَةِ إِلَّا بِعِصْمَتِكَ،

Allāhumma wa-innahu lā wafāʾa lī bi-al-tawbati illā biʿiṣmatika,

O God, I cannot remain true to repentance without Your protection,

وَلَا اسْتِمْسَاكَ بِي عَنِ الْخَطَايَا إِلَّا عَنْ قُوَّتِكَ،

Walā istimsāka bī ʿani al-khaṭāyā illā ʿan quwwatika,

or hold myself back from sins except through Your strength.

فَقَوِّنِي بِقُوَّةٍ كَافِيَةٍ،

Faqawwinī biquwwatin kāfiyatin,

Give me strength sufficient for the task,

وَتَوَلَّنِي بِعِصْمَةٍ مَانِعَةٍ.

Watawallanī biʿiṣmatin māniʿatin.

and care for me with protection that holds evil back.

اللَّهُمَّ أَيُّمَا عَبْدٍ تَابَ إِلَيْكَ

Allāhumma ayyumā ʿabdin tāba ilayka

O God, if any servant repents to You

وَهُوَ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ فَاسِخٌ لِتَوْبَتِهِ

Wahuwa fī ʿilmi al-ghaybi ʿindaka fāsikhun litawbatihi

while, in Your knowledge of the unseen, he will break his repentance

وَعَائِدٌ فِي ذَنْبِهِ وَخَطِيئَتِهِ،

Waʿāʾidun fī dhanbihi wakhaṭīʾatihi,

and return to his sin and wrongdoing,

فَإِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَكُونَ كَذَلِكَ.

Fa-innī aʿūdhu bika an akūna ka-dhālika.

I seek Your protection from being like him.

فَاجْعَلْ تَوْبَتِي هَذِهِ تَوْبَةً

Fa-ijʿal tawbatī hādhihi tawbatan

Make this repentance of mine a repentance

لَا أَحْتَاجُ بَعْدَهَا إِلَى تَوْبَةٍ،

Lā aḥtāju baʿdahā ilā tawbatin,

after which I need no further repentance,

تَوْبَةً مُوجِبَةً لِمَحْوِ مَا سَلَفَ

Tawbatan mūjibatan limaḥwi mā salafa

one that brings the erasure of what has passed

وَالسَّلَامَةِ فِيمَا بَقِيَ.

Wa-al-salāmati fīmā baqiya.

and safety in the time that remains.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْتَذِرُ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ جَهْلِي،

Allāhumma innī aʿtadhiru ilayka min jahlī,

O God, I ask You to excuse my ignorance

وَأَسْتَوْهِبُكَ سُوءَ فِعْلِي،

Wa-astawhibuka sūʾa fiʿlī,

and to grant me forgiveness for my bad deeds.

فَاضْمُمْنِي إِلَى كَنَفِ رَحْمَتِكَ تَطَوُّلًا،

Fa-uḍmumnī ilā kanafi raḥmatika taṭawwulan,

In Your generosity, gather me into the shelter of Your mercy;

وَاسْتُرْنِي بِسِتْرِ عَافِيَتِكَ تَفَضُّلًا.

Wa-usturnī bisitri ʿāfiyatika tafaḍḍulan.

in Your bounty, cover me with Your safeguarding care.

اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنِّي أَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ

Allāhumma wa-innī atūbu ilayka

O God, I turn to You in repentance

مِنْ كُلِّ مَا خَالَفَ إِرَادَتَكَ

Min kulli mā khālafa irādataka

for everything that has opposed Your will

أَوْ زَالَ عَنْ مَحَبَّتِكَ

Aw zāla ʿan maḥabbatika

or strayed from what You love,

مِنْ خَطَرَاتِ قَلْبِي

Min khaṭarāti qalbī

among the thoughts that cross my heart,

وَلَحَظَاتِ عَيْنِي

Walaḥaẓāti ʿaynī

the glances of my eyes,

وَحِكَايَاتِ لِسَانِي،

Waḥikāyāti lisānī,

and the words my tongue recounts.

تَوْبَةً تَسْلَمُ بِهَا كُلُّ جَارِحَةٍ عَلَى حِيَالِهَا مِنْ تَبِعَاتِكَ

Tawbatan taslamu bihā kullu jāriḥatin ʿalā ḥiyālihā min tabiʿātika

Let this repentance free each of my limbs from liability before You

وَتَأْمَنُ مِمَّا يَخَافُ الْمُعْتَدُونَ

Wataʾmanu mimmā yakhāfu al-muʿtadūna

and keep it safe from what transgressors fear:

مِنْ أَلِيمِ سَطَوَاتِكَ.

Min alīmi saṭawātika.

the pain of Your mighty punishment.

اللَّهُمَّ فَارْحَمْ وَحْدَتِي بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ،

Allāhumma fa-irḥam waḥdatī bayna yadayka,

O God, have mercy on me as I stand alone before You,

وَوَجِيبَ قَلْبِي مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ،

Wawajība qalbī min khashyatika,

on my heart's pounding in reverence for You,

وَاضْطِرَابَ أَرْكَانِي مِنْ هَيْبَتِكَ.

Wa-iḍṭirāba arkānī min haybatika.

and on my limbs trembling in awe of You.

فَقَدْ أَقَامَتْنِي يَا رَبِّ ذُنُوبِي

Faqad aqāmatnī yā rabbi dhunūbī

My Lord, my sins have brought me to stand

مَقَامَ الْخِزْيِ بِفِنَائِكَ،

Maqāma al-khizyi bifināʾika,

in disgrace at Your threshold.

فَإِنْ سَكَتُّ لَمْ يَنْطِقْ عَنِّي أَحَدٌ،

Fa-in sakattu lam yanṭiq ʿannī aḥadun,

If I remain silent, no one speaks for me;

وَإِنْ شَفَعْتُ فَلَسْتُ بِأَهْلِ الشَّفَاعَةِ.

Wa-in shafaʿtu falastu biʾahli al-shafāʿati.

if I plead my case, I am not worthy to intercede.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَشَفِّعْ فِي خَطَايَايَ كَرَمَكَ،

Washaffiʿ fī khaṭāyāya karamaka,

Let Your generosity intercede concerning my sins,

وَعُدْ عَلَى سَيِّئَاتِي بِعَفْوِكَ،

Waʿud ʿalā sayyiʾātī biʿafwika,

and meet my misdeeds with Your pardon.

وَلَا تَجْزِنِي جَزَائِي مِنْ عُقُوبَتِكَ،

Walā tajzinī jazāʾī min ʿuqūbatika,

Do not repay me with the punishment I deserve.

وَابْسُطْ عَلَيَّ طَوْلَكَ،

Wa-ubsuṭ ʿalayya ṭawlaka,

Spread Your bounty over me,

وَجَلِّلْنِي بِسِتْرِكَ،

Wajallilnī bisitrika,

and enfold me in Your covering.

وَافْعَلْ بِي فِعْلَ عَزِيزٍ

Wa-ifʿal bī fiʿla ʿazīzin

Treat me as a mighty master treats

تَضَرَّعَ إِلَيْهِ عَبْدٌ ذَلِيلٌ فَرَحِمَهُ،

Taḍarraʿa ilayhi ʿabdun dhalīlun faraḥimahu,

a lowly servant who pleads with him and receives his mercy,

أَوْ غَنِيٍّ تَعَرَّضَ لَهُ عَبْدٌ فَقِيرٌ فَنَعَشَهُ.

Aw ghaniyyin taʿarraḍa lahu ʿabdun faqīrun fanaʿashahu.

or a rich master who lifts up a poor servant seeking his favour.

اللَّهُمَّ لَا خَفِيرَ لِي مِنْكَ فَلْيَخْفُرْنِي عِزُّكَ،

Allāhumma lā khafīra lī minka falyakhfurnī ʿizzuka,

O God, I have no protector against You; let Your might protect me.

وَلَا شَفِيعَ لِي إِلَيْكَ فَلْيَشْفَعْ لِي فَضْلُكَ،

Walā shafīʿa lī ilayka falyashfaʿ lī faḍluka,

I have no intercessor with You; let Your bounty intercede for me.

وَقَدْ أَوْجَلَتْنِي خَطَايَايَ فَلْيُؤْمِنِّي عَفْوُكَ.

Waqad awjalatnī khaṭāyāya falyuʾminnī ʿafwuka.

My sins have filled me with fear; let Your pardon make me safe.

فَمَا كُلُّ مَا نَطَقْتُ بِهِ

Famā kullu mā naṭaqtu bihi

Nothing of what I have said has come

عَنْ جَهْلٍ مِنِّي بِسُوءِ أَثَرِي،

ʿan jahlin minnī bisūʾi atharī,

from ignorance of the harm I have caused

وَلَا نِسْيَانٍ لِمَا سَبَقَ مِنْ ذَمِيمِ فِعْلِي،

Walā nisyānin limā sabaqa min dhamīmi fiʿlī,

or forgetfulness of my past blameworthy deeds.

وَلَكِنْ لِتَسْمَعَ سَمَاؤُكَ وَمَنْ فِيهَا

Wa-lākin litasmaʿa samāʾuka waman fīhā

I have spoken so that Your heaven and those within it,

وَأَرْضُكَ وَمَنْ عَلَيْهَا

Wa-arḍuka waman ʿalayhā

and Your earth and those upon it, may hear

مَا أَظْهَرْتُ لَكَ مِنَ النَّدَمِ

Mā aẓhartu laka mina al-nadami

the remorse I have expressed before You

وَلَجَأْتُ إِلَيْكَ فِيهِ مِنَ التَّوْبَةِ.

Walajaʾtu ilayka fīhi mina al-tawbati.

and the repentance in which I have sought refuge with You.

فَلَعَلَّ بَعْضَهُمْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَرْحَمُنِي

Falaʿalla baʿḍahum biraḥmatika yarḥamunī

Perhaps, through Your mercy, one of them will have mercy on me

لِسُوءِ مَوْقِفِي،

Lisūʾi mawqifī,

because of my wretched position,

أَوْ تُدْرِكُهُ الرِّقَّةُ عَلَيَّ لِسُوءِ حَالِي

Aw tudrikuhu al-riqqatu ʿalayya lisūʾi ḥālī

or be moved to tenderness by my sorry state,

فَيَنَالَنِي مِنْهُ بِدَعْوَةٍ أَسْمَعُ لَدَيْكَ مِنْ دُعَائِي

Fayanālanī minhu bidaʿwatin asmaʿu ladayka min duʿāʾī

so I receive a prayer from him more readily heard by You than mine,

أَوْ شَفَاعَةٍ أَوْكَدُ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَفَاعَتِي،

Aw shafāʿatin awkadu ʿindaka min shafāʿatī,

or an intercession stronger with You than my own,

تَكُونُ بِهَا نَجَاتِي مِنْ غَضَبِكَ

Takūnu bihā najātī min ghaḍabika

through which I am saved from Your anger

وَفَوْزَتِي بِرِضَاكَ.

Wafawzatī biriḍāka.

and attain Your good pleasure.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنْ يَكُنِ النَّدَمُ تَوْبَةً إِلَيْكَ

Allāhumma in yakuni al-nadamu tawbatan ilayka

O God, if remorse is repentance towards You,

فَأَنَا أَنْدَمُ النَّادِمِينَ،

Fa-anā andamu al-nādimīna,

then I am the most remorseful of all.

وَإِنْ يَكُنِ التَّرْكُ لِمَعْصِيَتِكَ إِنَابَةً

Wa-in yakuni al-tarku limaʿṣiyatika inābatan

If abandoning disobedience to You is returning to You,

فَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُنِيبِينَ،

Fa-anā awwalu al-munībīna,

then I am the first to return.

وَإِنْ يَكُنِ الِاسْتِغْفَارُ حِطَّةً لِلذُّنُوبِ

Wa-in yakuni al-istighfāru ḥiṭṭatan li-l-dhunūbi

If seeking forgiveness lifts the burden of sins,

فَإِنِّي لَكَ مِنَ الْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ.

Fa-innī laka mina al-mustaghfirīna.

then I am among those who seek Your forgiveness.

اللَّهُمَّ فَكَمَا أَمَرْتَ بِالتَّوْبَةِ

Allāhumma fakamā amarta bi-al-tawbati

O God, just as You have commanded repentance,

وَضَمِنْتَ الْقَبُولَ،

Waḍaminta al-qabūla,

pledged to accept it,

وَحَثَثْتَ عَلَى الدُّعَاءِ

Waḥathathta ʿalā al-duʿāʾi

urged us to pray,

وَوَعَدْتَ الْإِجَابَةَ،

Wawaʿadta al-ijābata,

and promised to answer,

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاقْبَلْ تَوْبَتِي،

Wa-iqbal tawbatī,

and accept my repentance.

وَلَا تَرْجِعْنِي مَرْجَعَ الْخَيْبَةِ مِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ.

Walā tarjiʿnī marjaʿa al-khaybati min raḥmatika.

Do not send me back disappointed in Your mercy.

إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ عَلَى الْمُذْنِبِينَ

Innaka anta al-tawwābu ʿalā al-mudhnibīna

You are the One who repeatedly turns towards sinners in forgiveness,

وَالرَّحِيمُ لِلْخَاطِئِينَ الْمُنِيبِينَ.

Wa-al-raḥīmu li-l-khāṭiʾīna al-munībīna.

merciful to those who have sinned and return to You.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ كَمَا هَدَيْتَنَا بِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi kamā hadaytanā bihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family, as You guided us through him.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ كَمَا اسْتَنْقَذْتَنَا بِهِ،

Waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi kamā istanqadhtanā bihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family, as You rescued us through him.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family

صَلَاةً تَشْفَعُ لَنَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ

Ṣalātan tashfaʿu lanā yawma al-qiyāmati

with a blessing that intercedes for us on the Day of Resurrection,

وَيَوْمَ الْفَاقَةِ إِلَيْكَ،

Wayawma al-fāqati ilayka,

the day of our utter need of You.

إِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ،

Innaka ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun,

You have power over all things,

وَهُوَ عَلَيْكَ يَسِيرٌ.

Wahuwa ʿalayka yasīrun.

and this is easy for You.

Al-duʿāʾu 32

Prayer 32

فِي صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ وَالِاعْتِرَافِ بِالذَّنْبِ

Fī ṣalāti al-layli wa-al-iʿtirāfi bi-al-dhanbi

At the night prayer and in confession of sin

اللَّهُمَّ يَا ذَا الْمُلْكِ الْمُتَأَبِّدِ بِالْخُلُودِ

Allāhumma yā dhā al-mulki al-mutaʾabbidi bi-al-khulūdi

O God, Possessor of sovereignty that endures for ever,

وَالسُّلْطَانِ الْمُمْتَنِعِ بِغَيْرِ جُنُودٍ وَلَا أَعْوَانٍ،

Wa-al-sulṭāni al-mumtaniʿi bighayri junūdin walā aʿwānin,

of authority unassailable without armies or helpers,

وَالْعِزِّ الْبَاقِي عَلَى مَرِّ الدُّهُورِ

Wa-al-ʿizzi al-bāqī ʿalā marri al-duhūri

and of might that remains through the passing of ages,

وَخَوَالِي الْأَعْوَامِ

Wakhawālī al-aʿwāmi

through years gone by

وَمَوَاضِي الْأَزْمَانِ وَالْأَيَّامِ،

Wamawāḍī al-azmāni wa-al-ayyāmi,

and times and days that have passed.

عَزَّ سُلْطَانُكَ عِزًّا

ʿazza sulṭānuka ʿizzan

Your authority is mighty with a might

لَا حَدَّ لَهُ بِأَوَّلِيَّةٍ

Lā ḥadda lahu biʾawwaliyyatin

bounded by no beginning

وَلَا مُنْتَهَى لَهُ بِآخِرِيَّةٍ،

Walā muntahā lahu biʾākhiriyyatin,

and concluded by no end.

وَاسْتَعْلَى مُلْكُكَ عُلُوًّا

Wa-istaʿlā mulkuka ʿuluwwan

Your sovereignty rises to a height

سَقَطَتِ الْأَشْيَاءُ دُونَ بُلُوغِ أَمَدِهِ،

Saqaṭati al-ashyāʾu dūna bulūghi amadihi,

that all things fall short of reaching.

وَلَا يَبْلُغُ أَدْنَى مَا اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ

Walā yablughu adnā mā istaʾtharta bihi min dhālika

Even the least of what belongs to You alone

أَقْصَى نَعْتِ النَّاعِتِينَ.

Aqṣā naʿti al-nāʿitīna.

lies beyond the fullest description anyone can offer.

ضَلَّتْ فِيكَ الصِّفَاتُ،

Ḍallat fīka al-ṣifātu,

Descriptions lose their way in You,

وَتَفَسَّخَتْ دُونَكَ النُّعُوتُ،

Watafassakhat dūnaka al-nuʿūtu,

accounts of You fall apart before reaching You,

وَحَارَتْ فِي كِبْرِيَائِكَ لَطَائِفُ الْأَوْهَامِ.

Waḥārat fī kibriyāʾika laṭāʾifu al-awhāmi.

and the subtlest imaginings are bewildered by Your majesty.

كَذَلِكَ أَنْتَ اللَّهُ الْأَوَّلُ فِي أَوَّلِيَّتِكَ،

Ka-dhālika anta Allāhu al-awwalu fī awwaliyyatika,

Such are You, God, the First from all eternity,

وَعَلَى ذَلِكَ أَنْتَ دَائِمٌ لَا تَزُولُ.

Waʿalā dhālika anta dāʾimun lā tazūlu.

remaining so for ever, never passing away.

وَأَنَا الْعَبْدُ الضَّعِيفُ عَمَلًا،

Wa-anā al-ʿabdu al-ḍaʿīfu ʿamalan,

I am the servant whose deeds are weak

الْجَسِيمُ أَمَلًا،

Al-jasīmu amalan,

and whose hopes are immense.

خَرَجَتْ مِنْ يَدِي أَسْبَابُ الْوُصُلَاتِ

Kharajat min yadī asbābu al-wuṣulāti

The cords of connection have slipped from my hands,

إِلَّا مَا وَصَلَهُ رَحْمَتُكَ،

Illā mā waṣalahu raḥmatuka,

except what Your mercy keeps joined.

وَتَقَطَّعَتْ عَنِّي عِصَمُ الْآمَالِ

Wataqaṭṭaʿat ʿannī ʿiṣamu al-āmāli

The bonds sustaining my hopes have broken,

إِلَّا مَا أَنَا مُعْتَصِمٌ بِهِ مِنْ عَفْوِكَ.

Illā mā anā muʿtaṣimun bihi min ʿafwika.

except the pardon of Yours to which I cling.

قَلَّ عِنْدِي مَا أَعْتَدُّ بِهِ مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ،

Qalla ʿindī mā aʿtaddu bihi min ṭāʿatika,

Little is the obedience to You that I can count in my favour,

وَكَثُرَ عَلَيَّ مَا أَبُوءُ بِهِ مِنْ مَعْصِيَتِكَ،

Wakathura ʿalayya mā abūʾu bihi min maʿṣiyatika,

and much is the disobedience I must acknowledge against myself.

وَلَنْ يَضِيقَ عَلَيْكَ عَفْوٌ عَنْ عَبْدِكَ

Walan yaḍīqa ʿalayka ʿafwun ʿan ʿabdika

Yet pardoning Your servant can never be difficult for You,

وَإِنْ أَسَاءَ، فَاعْفُ عَنِّي.

Wa-in asāʾa, fa-uʿfu ʿannī.

even if he has done wrong; so pardon me.

اللَّهُمَّ وَقَدْ أَشْرَفَ عَلَى خَفَايَا الْأَعْمَالِ عِلْمُكَ،

Allāhumma waqad ashrafa ʿalā khafāyā al-aʿmāli ʿilmuka,

O God, Your knowledge watches over the hidden parts of every deed,

وَانْكَشَفَ كُلُّ مَسْتُورٍ دُونَ خُبْرِكَ،

Wa-inkashafa kullu mastūrin dūna khubrika,

and everything concealed lies open before Your awareness.

وَلَا تَنْطَوِي عَنْكَ دَقَائِقُ الْأُمُورِ،

Walā tanṭawī ʿanka daqāʾiqu al-umūri,

No subtle detail of any matter is hidden from You,

وَلَا تَعْزُبُ عَنْكَ غَيِّبَاتُ السَّرَائِرِ.

Walā taʿzubu ʿanka ghayyibātu al-sarāʾiri.

and no buried secret escapes You.

وَقَدِ اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيَّ عَدُوُّكَ

Waqadi istaḥwadha ʿalayya ʿaduwwuka

Your enemy has gained mastery over me,

الَّذِي اسْتَنْظَرَكَ لِغَوَايَتِي فَأَنْظَرْتَهُ،

Alladhī istanẓaraka lighawāyatī fa-anẓartahu,

the one who asked respite to mislead me, and You gave him respite,

وَاسْتَمْهَلَكَ إِلَى يَوْمِ الدِّينِ لِإِضْلَالِي

Wa-istamhalaka ilā yawmi al-dīni liʾiḍlālī

who asked time until the Day of Judgement to lead me astray,

فَأَمْهَلْتَهُ.

Fa-amhaltahu.

and You gave him time.

فَأَوْقَعَنِي وَقَدْ هَرَبْتُ إِلَيْكَ

Fa-awqaʿanī waqad harabtu ilayka

He caused me to fall, though I had fled to You

مِنْ صَغَائِرِ ذُنُوبٍ مُوبِقَةٍ

Min ṣaghāʾiri dhunūbin mūbiqatin

from lesser sins that bring ruin

وَكَبَائِرِ أَعْمَالٍ مُرْدِيَةٍ،

Wakabāʾiri aʿmālin murdiyatin,

and grave deeds that lead to destruction.

حَتَّى إِذَا قَارَفْتُ مَعْصِيَتَكَ

Ḥattā idhā qāraftu maʿṣiyataka

Once I had committed disobedience to You

وَاسْتَوْجَبْتُ بِسُوءِ سَعْيِي سَخْطَتَكَ،

Wa-istawjabtu bisūʾi saʿyī sakhṭataka,

and earned Your displeasure through my evil efforts,

فَتَلَ عَنِّي عِذَارَ غَدْرِهِ،

Fatala ʿannī ʿidhāra ghadrihi,

he turned his treacherous bridle away from me,

وَتَلَقَّانِي بِكَلِمَةِ كُفْرِهِ،

Watalaqqānī bikalimati kufrihi,

met me with his words of disavowal,

وَتَوَلَّى الْبَرَاءَةَ مِنِّي،

Watawallā al-barāʾata minnī,

declared himself free of me,

وَأَدْبَرَ مُوَلِّيًا عَنِّي،

Wa-adbara muwalliyan ʿannī,

and turned his back and left.

فَأَصْحَرَنِي لِغَضَبِكَ فَرِيدًا،

Fa-aṣḥaranī lighaḍabika farīdan,

He left me alone, exposed to Your anger,

وَأَخْرَجَنِي إِلَى فِنَاءِ نَقِمَتِكَ طَرِيدًا.

Wa-akhrajanī ilā fināʾi naqimatika ṭarīdan.

and drove me out, an outcast, into the court of Your retribution.

لَا شَفِيعٌ يَشْفَعُ لِي إِلَيْكَ،

Lā shafīʿun yashfaʿu lī ilayka,

No intercessor pleads for me with You,

وَلَا خَفِيرٌ يُؤْمِنُنِي عَلَيْكَ،

Walā khafīrun yuʾminunī ʿalayka,

no protector makes me safe against You,

وَلَا حِصْنٌ يَحْجُبُنِي عَنْكَ،

Walā ḥiṣnun yaḥjubunī ʿanka,

no fortress shields me from You,

وَلَا مَلَاذٌ أَلْجَأُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْكَ.

Walā malādhun aljaʾu ilayhi minka.

and no refuge offers escape from You.

فَهَذَا مَقَامُ الْعَائِذِ بِكَ

Fa-hādhā maqāmu al-ʿāʾidhi bika

Here stands one seeking refuge in You,

وَمَحَلُّ الْمُعْتَرِفِ لَكَ،

Wamaḥallu al-muʿtarifi laka,

one confessing before You.

فَلَا يَضِيقَنَّ عَنِّي فَضْلُكَ،

Falā yaḍīqanna ʿannī faḍluka,

Let Your bounty never be too narrow for me,

وَلَا يَقْصُرَنَّ دُونِي عَفْوُكَ،

Walā yaqṣuranna dūnī ʿafwuka,

and let Your pardon never stop short of me.

وَلَا أَكُنْ أَخْيَبَ عِبَادِكَ التَّائِبِينَ،

Walā akun akhyaba ʿibādika al-tāʾibīna,

Let me not be the most disappointed of Your repentant servants,

وَلَا أَقْنَطَ وُفُودِكَ الْآمِلِينَ،

Walā aqnaṭa wufūdika al-āmilīna,

or the most despairing of those who come to You in hope.

وَاغْفِرْ لِي، إِنَّكَ خَيْرُ الْغَافِرِينَ.

Wa-ighfir lī, innaka khayru al-ghāfirīna.

Forgive me, for You are the best of those who forgive.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ أَمَرْتَنِي فَتَرَكْتُ،

Allāhumma innaka amartanī fataraktu,

O God, You commanded me, and I neglected Your command;

وَنَهَيْتَنِي فَرَكِبْتُ،

Wanahaytanī farakibtu,

You forbade me, and I committed what You forbade.

وَسَوَّلَ لِيَ الْخَطَأَ خَاطِرُ السُّوءِ فَفَرَّطْتُ.

Wasawwala liya al-khaṭaʾa khāṭiru al-sūʾi fafarraṭtu.

An evil thought made wrongdoing seem fair, and I was negligent.

وَلَا أَسْتَشْهِدُ عَلَى صِيَامِي نَهَارًا،

Walā astashhidu ʿalā ṣiyāmī nahāran,

I can call no day to witness to my fasting,

وَلَا أَسْتَجِيرُ بِتَهَجُّدِي لَيْلًا،

Walā astajīru bitahajjudī laylan,

nor seek shelter in my vigil of prayer at night.

وَلَا تُثْنِي عَلَيَّ بِإِحْيَائِهَا سُنَّةٌ

Walā tuthnī ʿalayya biʾiḥyāʾihā sunnatun

No devotional practice can praise me for having kept it alive,

حَاشَا فُرُوضِكَ الَّتِي مَنْ ضَيَّعَهَا هَلَكَ.

Ḥāshā furūḍika allatī man ḍayyaʿahā halaka.

apart from Your obligations, whose neglect brings ruin.

وَلَسْتُ أَتَوَسَّلُ إِلَيْكَ بِفَضْلِ نَافِلَةٍ

Walastu atawassalu ilayka bifaḍli nāfilatin

I do not approach You on the strength of voluntary worship,

مَعَ كَثِيرِ مَا أَغْفَلْتُ مِنْ وَظَائِفِ فُرُوضِكَ،

Maʿa kathīri mā aghfaltu min waẓāʾifi furūḍika,

when I have neglected so many duties You have made obligatory

وَتَعَدَّيْتُ عَنْ مَقَامَاتِ حُدُودِكَ

Wataʿaddaytu ʿan maqāmāti ḥudūdika

and crossed beyond the bounds You set,

إِلَى حُرُمَاتٍ انْتَهَكْتُهَا

Ilā ḥurumātin intahaktuhā

violating sacred limits

وَكَبَائِرِ ذُنُوبٍ اجْتَرَحْتُهَا،

Wakabāʾiri dhunūbin ijtaraḥtuhā,

and committing grave sins,

كَانَتْ عَافِيَتُكَ لِي مِنْ فَضَائِحِهَا سِتْرًا.

Kānat ʿāfiyatuka lī min faḍāʾiḥihā sitran.

while Your protection covered me from the disgrace they would bring.

وَهَذَا مَقَامُ مَنِ اسْتَحْيَى لِنَفْسِهِ مِنْكَ،

Wa-hādhā maqāmu mani istaḥyā linafsihi minka,

Here stands one ashamed of himself before You,

وَسَخِطَ عَلَيْهَا،

Wasakhiṭa ʿalayhā,

displeased with himself

وَرَضِيَ عَنْكَ،

Waraḍiya ʿanka,

and content with You.

فَتَلَقَّاكَ بِنَفْسٍ خَاشِعَةٍ

Fatalaqqāka binafsin khāshiʿatin

He meets You with a humbled soul,

وَرَقَبَةٍ خَاضِعَةٍ

Waraqabatin khāḍiʿatin

a bowed neck,

وَظَهْرٍ مُثْقَلٍ مِنَ الْخَطَايَا،

Waẓahrin muthqalin mina al-khaṭāyā,

and a back weighed down by sins,

وَاقِفًا بَيْنَ الرَّغْبَةِ إِلَيْكَ وَالرَّهْبَةِ مِنْكَ.

Wāqifan bayna al-raghbati ilayka wa-al-rahbati minka.

standing between longing for You and fear of You.

وَأَنْتَ أَوْلَى مَنْ رَجَاهُ

Wa-anta awlā man rajāhu

You are the One most worthy of his hope

وَأَحَقُّ مَنْ خَشِيَهُ وَاتَّقَاهُ.

Wa-aḥaqqu man khashiyahu wa-ittaqāhu.

and most deserving of his reverence and caution.

فَأَعْطِنِي يَا رَبِّ مَا رَجَوْتُ،

Fa-aʿṭinī yā rabbi mā rajawtu,

My Lord, give me what I have hoped for,

وَآمِنِّي مَا حَذِرْتُ،

Wa-āminnī mā ḥadhirtu,

make me safe from what I have feared,

وَعُدْ عَلَيَّ بِعَائِدَةِ رَحْمَتِكَ،

Waʿud ʿalayya biʿāʾidati raḥmatika,

and turn towards me with the gift of Your mercy.

إِنَّكَ أَكْرَمُ الْمَسْؤُولِينَ.

Innaka akramu al-masʾūlīna.

You are the most generous of all who are asked.

اللَّهُمَّ وَإِذْ سَتَرْتَنِي بِعَفْوِكَ

Allāhumma wa-idh satartanī biʿafwika

O God, since You have covered me with Your pardon

وَتَغَمَّدْتَنِي بِفَضْلِكَ فِي دَارِ الْفَنَاءِ

Wataghammadtanī bifaḍlika fī dāri al-fanāʾi

and enfolded me in Your bounty in this passing world,

بِحَضْرَةِ الْأَكْفَاءِ،

Biḥaḍrati al-akfāʾi,

before those who stand as my peers,

فَأَجِرْنِي مِنْ فَضِيحَاتِ دَارِ الْبَقَاءِ

Fa-ajirnī min faḍīḥāti dāri al-baqāʾi

protect me from disgrace in the everlasting home,

عِنْدَ مَوَاقِفِ الْأَشْهَادِ

ʿinda mawāqifi al-ashhādi

when the witnesses stand forth:

مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ

Mina al-malāʾikati al-muqarrabīna

the angels brought near to You,

وَالرُّسُلِ الْمُكَرَّمِينَ

Wa-al-rusuli al-mukarramīna

the honoured messengers,

وَالشُّهَدَاءِ وَالصَّالِحِينَ،

Wa-al-shuhadāʾi wa-al-ṣāliḥīna,

the martyrs and the righteous,

مِنْ جَارٍ كُنْتُ أُكَاتِمُهُ سَيِّئَاتِي

Min jārin kuntu ukātimuhu sayyiʾātī

and the neighbour from whom I used to hide my misdeeds,

وَمِنْ ذِي رَحِمٍ كُنْتُ أَحْتَشِمُ مِنْهُ فِي سَرِيرَاتِي.

Wamin dhī raḥimin kuntu aḥtashimu minhu fī sarīrātī.

and the relative before whom I felt ashamed of my secret acts.

لَمْ أَثِقْ بِهِمْ رَبِّ فِي السِّتْرِ عَلَيَّ،

Lam athiq bihim rabbi fī al-sitri ʿalayya,

My Lord, I did not trust them to conceal my faults,

وَوَثِقْتُ بِكَ رَبِّ فِي الْمَغْفِرَةِ لِي،

Wawathiqtu bika rabbi fī al-maghfirati lī,

but I trusted You, my Lord, to forgive me.

وَأَنْتَ أَوْلَى مَنْ وُثِقَ بِهِ

Wa-anta awlā man wuthiqa bihi

You are the One most worthy of trust,

وَأَعْطَى مَنْ رُغِبَ إِلَيْهِ،

Wa-aʿṭā man rughiba ilayhi,

the most giving of all who are approached,

وَأَرْأَفُ مَنِ اسْتُرْحِمَ، فَارْحَمْنِي.

Wa-arʾafu mani usturḥima, fa-irḥamnī.

and the most tender of all asked for mercy; so have mercy on me.

اللَّهُمَّ وَأَنْتَ حَدَرْتَنِي مَاءً مَهِينًا

Allāhumma wa-anta ḥadartanī māʾan mahīnan

O God, You sent me down as a lowly fluid

مِنْ صُلْبٍ مُتَضَايِقِ الْعِظَامِ حَرِجِ الْمَسَالِكِ

Min ṣulbin mutaḍāyiqi al-ʿiẓāmi ḥariji al-masāliki

from loins with closely set bones and narrow passages,

إِلَى رَحِمٍ ضَيِّقَةٍ سَتَرْتَهَا بِالْحُجُبِ،

Ilā raḥimin ḍayyiqatin satartahā bi-al-ḥujubi,

into a confined womb that You concealed behind coverings.

تُصَرِّفُنِي حَالًا عَنْ حَالٍ

Tuṣarrifunī ḥālan ʿan ḥālin

You transformed me from one state to another,

حَتَّى انْتَهَيْتَ بِي إِلَى تَمَامِ الصُّورَةِ

Ḥattā intahayta bī ilā tamāmi al-ṣūrati

until You brought my form to completion

وَأَثْبَتَّ فِيَّ الْجَوَارِحَ،

Wa-athbatta fiyya al-jawāriḥa,

and established my limbs within me,

كَمَا نَعَتَّ فِي كِتَابِكَ:

Kamā naʿatta fī kitābika:

as You have described in Your Book:

نُطْفَةً ثُمَّ عَلَقَةً

Nuṭfatan thumma ʿalaqatan

a drop, then a clinging form,

ثُمَّ مُضْغَةً ثُمَّ عِظَامًا،

Thumma muḍghatan thumma ʿiẓāman,

then a morsel of flesh, then bones,

ثُمَّ كَسَوْتَ الْعِظَامَ لَحْمًا،

Thumma kasawta al-ʿiẓāma laḥman,

then You clothed the bones with flesh,

ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْتَنِي خَلْقًا آخَرَ كَمَا شِئْتَ.

Thumma anshaʾtanī khalqan ākhara kamā shiʾta.

and brought me forth as a new creation, as You willed.

حَتَّى إِذَا احْتَجْتُ إِلَى رِزْقِكَ

Ḥattā idhā iḥtajtu ilā rizqika

Then, when I needed Your sustenance

وَلَمْ أَسْتَغْنِ عَنْ غِيَاثِ فَضْلِكَ،

Walam astaghni ʿan ghiyāthi faḍlika,

and could not do without the help of Your bounty,

جَعَلْتَ لِي قُوتًا مِنْ فَضْلِ طَعَامٍ وَشَرَابٍ

Jaʿalta lī qūtan min faḍli ṭaʿāmin washarābin

You made nourishment for me from the surplus food and drink

أَجْرَيْتَهُ لِأَمَتِكَ الَّتِي أَسْكَنْتَنِي جَوْفَهَا

Ajraytahu liʾamatika allatī askantanī jawfahā

You supplied to Your handmaid, within whose body You lodged me

وَأَوْدَعْتَنِي قَرَارَ رَحِمِهَا.

Wa-awdaʿtanī qarāra raḥimihā.

and in whose womb You placed me securely.

وَلَوْ تَكِلُنِي يَا رَبِّ فِي تِلْكَ الْحَالَاتِ إِلَى حَوْلِي

Walaw takilunī yā rabbi fī tilka al-ḥālāti ilā ḥawlī

Had You left me to my own resources in those states, my Lord,

أَوْ تَضْطَرُّنِي إِلَى قُوَّتِي،

Aw taḍṭarrunī ilā quwwatī,

or forced me to rely on my own strength,

لَكَانَ الْحَوْلُ عَنِّي مُعْتَزِلًا

Lakāna al-ḥawlu ʿannī muʿtazilan

all resource would have been absent from me

وَلَكَانَتِ الْقُوَّةُ مِنِّي بَعِيدَةً.

Walakānati al-quwwatu minnī baʿīdatan.

and all strength far beyond my reach.

فَغَذَوْتَنِي بِفَضْلِكَ غِذَاءَ الْبَرِّ اللَّطِيفِ،

Faghadhawtanī bifaḍlika ghidhāʾa al-barri al-laṭīfi,

You nourished me from Your bounty with tender and kindly care,

تَفْعَلُ ذَلِكَ بِي تَطَوُّلًا عَلَيَّ إِلَى غَايَتِي هَذِهِ،

Tafʿalu dhālika bī taṭawwulan ʿalayya ilā ghāyatī hādhihi,

continuing this generosity towards me up to this very moment.

لَا أَعْدَمُ بِرَّكَ

Lā aʿdamu birraka

I am never without Your kindness,

وَلَا يُبْطِئُ بِي حُسْنُ صَنِيعِكَ،

Walā yubṭiʾu bī ḥusnu ṣanīʿika,

and Your gracious care never arrives too late for me.

وَلَا تَتَأَكَّدُ مَعَ ذَلِكَ ثِقَتِي،

Walā tataʾakkadu maʿa dhālika thiqatī,

Yet even so, my trust does not become firm

فَأَتَفَرَّغَ لِمَا هُوَ أَحْظَى لِي عِنْدَكَ.

Fa-atafarragha limā huwa aḥẓā lī ʿindaka.

enough to free me for what would win me greater favour with You.

قَدْ مَلَكَ الشَّيْطَانُ عِنَانِي

Qad malaka al-shayṭānu ʿinānī

Satan has taken hold of my reins

فِي سُوءِ الظَّنِّ وَضَعْفِ الْيَقِينِ،

Fī sūʾi al-ẓanni waḍaʿfi al-yaqīni,

through mistrust and weak certainty.

فَأَنَا أَشْكُو سُوءَ مُجَاوَرَتِهِ لِي

Fa-anā ashkū sūʾa mujāwaratihi lī

I complain to You of the harm of his presence beside me

وَطَاعَةَ نَفْسِي لَهُ،

Waṭāʿata nafsī lahu,

and of my soul's obedience to him.

وَأَسْتَعْصِمُكَ مِنْ مَلَكَتِهِ،

Wa-astaʿṣimuka min malakatihi,

I ask You to protect me from his control,

وَأَتَضَرَّعُ إِلَيْكَ فِي صَرْفِ كَيْدِهِ عَنِّي،

Wa-ataḍarraʿu ilayka fī ṣarfi kaydihi ʿannī,

and plead with You to turn his schemes away from me.

وَأَسْأَلُكَ فِي أَنْ تُسَهِّلَ إِلَى رِزْقِي سَبِيلًا.

Wa-asʾaluka fī an tusahhila ilā rizqī sabīlan.

I ask You to make the way to my sustenance easy.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى ابْتِدَائِكَ بِالنِّعَمِ الْجِسَامِ،

Falaka al-ḥamdu ʿalā ibtidāʾika bi-al-niʿami al-jisāmi,

Praise belongs to You for bestowing great blessings unasked,

وَإِلْهَامِكَ الشُّكْرَ عَلَى الْإِحْسَانِ وَالْإِنْعَامِ.

Wa-ilhāmika al-shukra ʿalā al-iḥsāni wa-al-inʿāmi.

and for inspiring gratitude for Your goodness and generosity.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَسَهِّلْ عَلَيَّ رِزْقِي،

Wasahhil ʿalayya rizqī,

and make my provision easy for me.

وَأَنْ تُقَنِّعَنِي بِتَقْدِيرِكَ لِي،

Wa-an tuqanniʿanī bitaqdīrika lī,

I ask that You make me content with what You have allotted me,

وَأَنْ تُرْضِيَنِي بِحِصَّتِي فِيمَا قَسَمْتَ لِي،

Wa-an turḍiyanī biḥiṣṣatī fīmā qasamta lī,

satisfied with my share in what You have apportioned,

وَأَنْ تَجْعَلَ مَا ذَهَبَ مِنْ جِسْمِي وَعُمُرِي

Wa-an tajʿala mā dhahaba min jismī waʿumurī

and let the strength and years I have used up

فِي سَبِيلِ طَاعَتِكَ،

Fī sabīli ṭāʿatika,

have been spent in obedience to You.

إِنَّكَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ.

Innaka khayru al-rāziqīna.

You are the best of all providers.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ نَارٍ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika min nārin

O God, I seek Your protection from a Fire

تَغَلَّظْتَ بِهَا عَلَى مَنْ عَصَاكَ،

Taghallaẓta bihā ʿalā man ʿaṣāka,

through which You deal sternly with those who disobey You,

وَتَوَعَّدْتَ بِهَا مَنْ صَدَفَ عَنْ رِضَاكَ،

Watawaʿʿadta bihā man ṣadafa ʿan riḍāka,

with which You threaten those who turn from Your good pleasure;

وَمِنْ نَارٍ نُورُهَا ظُلْمَةٌ

Wamin nārin nūruhā ẓulmatun

from a Fire whose light is darkness,

وَهَيِّنُهَا أَلِيمٌ،

Wahayyinuhā alīmun,

whose mildest touch is painful,

وَبَعِيدُهَا قَرِيبٌ؛

Wabaʿīduhā qarībun;

and whose distant reaches are near;

وَمِنْ نَارٍ يَأْكُلُ بَعْضَهَا بَعْضٌ

Wamin nārin yaʾkulu baʿḍahā baʿḍun

from a Fire whose parts devour one another

وَيَصُولُ بَعْضُهَا عَلَى بَعْضٍ؛

Wayaṣūlu baʿḍuhā ʿalā baʿḍin;

and whose flames assault one another;

وَمِنْ نَارٍ تَذَرُ الْعِظَامَ رَمِيمًا

Wamin nārin tadharu al-ʿiẓāma ramīman

from a Fire that leaves bones crumbling

وَتَسْقِي أَهْلَهَا حَمِيمًا؛

Watasqī ahlahā ḥamīman;

and gives its people scalding water to drink;

وَمِنْ نَارٍ لَا تُبْقِي عَلَى مَنْ تَضَرَّعَ إِلَيْهَا

Wamin nārin lā tubqī ʿalā man taḍarraʿa ilayhā

from a Fire that spares no one who pleads with it

وَلَا تَرْحَمُ مَنِ اسْتَعْطَفَهَا،

Walā tarḥamu mani istaʿṭafahā,

and has no mercy on anyone who asks its compassion,

وَلَا تَقْدِرُ عَلَى التَّخْفِيفِ

Walā taqdiru ʿalā al-takhfīfi

nor can it lighten the suffering

عَمَّنْ خَشَعَ لَهَا وَاسْتَسْلَمَ إِلَيْهَا،

ʿamman khashaʿa lahā wa-istaslama ilayhā,

of anyone who humbles himself before it and surrenders to it.

تَلْقَى سُكَّانَهَا بِأَحَرِّ مَا لَدَيْهَا

Talqā sukkānahā biʾaḥarri mā ladayhā

It meets its inhabitants with the fiercest heat it holds,

مِنْ أَلِيمِ النَّكَالِ وَشَدِيدِ الْوَبَالِ.

Min alīmi al-nakāli washadīdi al-wabāli.

with painful chastisement and terrible consequences.

وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَقَارِبِهَا الْفَاغِرَةِ أَفْوَاهُهَا،

Wa-aʿūdhu bika min ʿaqāribihā al-fāghirati afwāhuhā,

I seek Your protection from its scorpions with gaping mouths,

وَحَيَّاتِهَا الصَّالِقَةِ بِأَنْيَابِهَا،

Waḥayyātihā al-ṣāliqati biʾanyābihā,

its snakes striking with their fangs,

وَشَرَابِهَا الَّذِي يُقَطِّعُ أَمْعَاءَ وَأَفْئِدَةَ سُكَّانِهَا

Washarābihā alladhī yuqaṭṭiʿu amʿāʾa wa-afʾidata sukkānihā

and its drink that tears apart its inhabitants' bowels and hearts

وَيَنْزِعُ قُلُوبَهُمْ،

Wayanziʿu qulūbahum,

and wrenches out their hearts.

وَأَسْتَهْدِيكَ لِمَا بَاعَدَ مِنْهَا

Wa-astahdīka limā bāʿada minhā

I ask You to guide me towards what keeps me far from it

وَأَخَّرَ عَنْهَا.

Wa-akhkhara ʿanhā.

and holds me back from approaching it.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَأَجِرْنِي مِنْهَا بِفَضْلِ رَحْمَتِكَ،

Wa-ajirnī minhā bifaḍli raḥmatika,

Protect me from it through the abundance of Your mercy.

وَأَقِلْنِي عَثَرَاتِي بِحُسْنِ إِقَالَتِكَ،

Wa-aqilnī ʿatharātī biḥusni iqālatika,

Release me from my stumbles with Your gracious forgiveness,

وَلَا تَخْذُلْنِي يَا خَيْرَ الْمُجِيرِينَ.

Walā takhdhulnī yā khayra al-mujīrīna.

and do not forsake me, O best of all who give protection.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ تَقِي الْكَرِيهَةَ،

Allāhumma innaka taqī al-karīhata,

O God, You guard against what is harmful,

وَتُعْطِي الْحَسَنَةَ،

Watuʿṭī al-ḥasanata,

grant what is good,

وَتَفْعَلُ مَا تُرِيدُ،

Watafʿalu mā turīdu,

and do whatever You will.

وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.

You have power over all things.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ إِذَا ذُكِرَ الْأَبْرَارُ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi idhā dhukira al-abrāru,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family whenever the righteous are named.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ

Waṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi

Bless Muhammad and his family

مَا اخْتَلَفَ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ،

Mā ikhtalafa al-laylu wa-al-nahāru,

as long as night and day follow one another,

صَلَاةً لَا يَنْقَطِعُ مَدَدُهَا

Ṣalātan lā yanqaṭiʿu madaduhā

with a blessing whose flow never ceases

وَلَا يُحْصَى عَدَدُهَا،

Walā yuḥṣā ʿadaduhā,

and whose number cannot be counted,

صَلَاةً تَشْحَنُ الْهَوَاءَ

Ṣalātan tashḥanu al-hawāʾa

a blessing that fills the air

وَتَمْلَأُ الْأَرْضَ وَالسَّمَاءَ.

Watamlaʾu al-arḍa wa-al-samāʾa.

and fills the earth and heaven.

صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَرْضَى،

Ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi ḥattā yarḍā,

May God bless him until he is content,

وَصَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ بَعْدَ الرِّضَا،

Waṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-ālihi baʿda al-riḍā,

and bless him and his family beyond that contentment,

صَلَاةً لَا حَدَّ لَهَا وَلَا مُنْتَهَى،

Ṣalātan lā ḥadda lahā walā muntahā,

with a blessing that has neither limit nor end,

يَا أَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ.

Yā arḥama al-rāḥimīna.

O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.

Prayer 33

فِي الِاسْتِخَارَةِ

Fī al-istikhārati

Seeking God's choice of what is best

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ،

Allāhumma innī astakhīruka biʿilmika,

O God, by Your knowledge, I ask You to choose what is best for me.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَاقْضِ لِي بِالْخِيَرَةِ،

Wa-iqḍi lī bi-al-khiyarati,

and decree the best for me.

وَأَلْهِمْنَا مَعْرِفَةَ الِاخْتِيَارِ،

Wa-alhimnā maʿrifata al-ikhtiyāri,

Inspire us to recognise the right choice,

وَاجْعَلْ ذَلِكَ ذَرِيعَةً

Wa-ijʿal dhālika dharīʿatan

and make this a means

إِلَى الرِّضَا بِمَا قَضَيْتَ لَنَا

Ilā al-riḍā bimā qaḍayta lanā

of contentment with what You decree for us

وَالتَّسْلِيمِ لِمَا حَكَمْتَ.

Wa-al-taslīmi limā ḥakamta.

and surrender to what You decide.

فَأَزِحْ عَنَّا رَيْبَ الِارْتِيَابِ،

Fa-aziḥ ʿannā rayba al-irtiyābi,

Remove from us the unease of doubt,

وَأَيِّدْنَا بِيَقِينِ الْمُخْلِصِينَ،

Wa-ayyidnā biyaqīni al-mukhliṣīna,

and sustain us with the certainty of the sincere.

وَلَا تَسُمْنَا عَجْزَ الْمَعْرِفَةِ عَمَّا تَخَيَّرْتَ،

Walā tasumnā ʿajza al-maʿrifati ʿammā takhayyarta,

Do not leave us unable to understand what You have chosen,

فَنَغْمِطَ قَدْرَكَ،

Fanaghmiṭa qadraka,

lest we fail to honour You as You deserve,

وَنَكْرَهَ مَوْضِعَ رِضَاكَ،

Wanakraha mawḍiʿa riḍāka,

dislike what pleases You,

وَنَجْنَحَ إِلَى الَّتِي هِيَ أَبْعَدُ مِنْ حُسْنِ الْعَاقِبَةِ

Wanajnaḥa ilā allatī hiya abʿadu min ḥusni al-ʿāqibati

and lean towards the choice furthest from a good outcome

وَأَقْرَبُ إِلَى ضِدِّ الْعَافِيَةِ.

Wa-aqrabu ilā ḍiddi al-ʿāfiyati.

and nearest to harm.

حَبِّبْ إِلَيْنَا مَا نَكْرَهُ مِنْ قَضَائِكَ،

Ḥabbib ilaynā mā nakrahu min qaḍāʾika,

Make dear to us what we dislike of Your decree,

وَسَهِّلْ عَلَيْنَا مَا نَسْتَصْعِبُ مِنْ حُكْمِكَ،

Wasahhil ʿalaynā mā nastaṣʿibu min ḥukmika,

and make easy what we find difficult in Your judgement.

وَأَلْهِمْنَا الِانْقِيَادَ

Wa-alhimnā al-inqiyāda

Inspire us to yield

لِمَا أَوْرَدْتَ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ مَشِيئَتِكَ،

Limā awradta ʿalaynā min mashīʾatika,

to what You bring upon us through Your will,

حَتَّى لَا نُحِبَّ تَأْخِيرَ مَا عَجَّلْتَ

Ḥattā lā nuḥibba taʾkhīra mā ʿajjalta

so that we do not wish to delay what You hasten

وَلَا تَعْجِيلَ مَا أَخَّرْتَ،

Walā taʿjīla mā akhkharta,

or hasten what You delay,

وَلَا نَكْرَهَ مَا أَحْبَبْتَ،

Walā nakraha mā aḥbabta,

dislike what You love,

وَلَا نَتَخَيَّرَ مَا كَرِهْتَ.

Walā natakhayyara mā karihta.

or choose what You dislike.

وَاخْتِمْ لَنَا بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْمَدُ عَاقِبَةً

Wa-ikhtim lanā bi-allatī hiya aḥmadu ʿāqibatan

Bring our affairs to the most praiseworthy outcome

وَأَكْرَمُ مَصِيرًا،

Wa-akramu maṣīran,

and the most honourable destination.

إِنَّكَ تُفِيدُ الْكَرِيمَةَ

Innaka tufīdu al-karīmata

You bestow noble gifts,

وَتُعْطِي الْجَسِيمَةَ،

Watuʿṭī al-jasīmata,

grant immense favours,

وَتَفْعَلُ مَا تُرِيدُ،

Watafʿalu mā turīdu,

and do whatever You will.

وَأَنْتَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ.

Wa-anta ʿalā kulli shayʾin qadīrun.

You have power over all things.

Prayer 34

إِذَا ابْتُلِيَ أَوْ رَأَى مُبْتَلًى

Idhā ubtuliya aw raʾā mubtalan

When he was tried or saw someone tried

بِفَضِيحَةٍ أَوْ بِذَنْبٍ

Bifaḍīḥatin aw bidhanbin

by disgrace or sin

اللَّهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى سِتْرِكَ بَعْدَ عِلْمِكَ،

Allāhumma laka al-ḥamdu ʿalā sitrika baʿda ʿilmika,

O God, praise belongs to You for covering faults You know,

وَمُعَافَاتِكَ بَعْدَ خُبْرِكَ.

Wamuʿāfātika baʿda khubrika.

and sparing us despite Your full awareness.

فَكُلُّنَا قَدِ اقْتَرَفَ الْعَائِبَةَ فَلَمْ تَشْهَرْهُ،

Fakullunā qadi iqtarafa al-ʿāʾibata falam tashharhu,

Each of us has committed a shameful act, yet You did not expose him,

وَارْتَكَبَ الْفَاحِشَةَ فَلَمْ تَفْضَحْهُ،

Wa-irtakaba al-fāḥishata falam tafḍaḥhu,

done something indecent, yet You did not disgrace him,

وَتَسَتَّرَ بِالْمَسَاوِئِ فَلَمْ تَدْلُلْ عَلَيْهِ.

Watasattara bi-al-masāwiʾi falam tadlul ʿalayhi.

and hidden his wrongdoing, yet You did not point him out.

كَمْ نَهْيٍ لَكَ قَدْ أَتَيْنَاهُ،

Kam nahyin laka qad ataynāhu,

How often we have done what You forbade,

وَأَمْرٍ قَدْ وَقَفْتَنَا عَلَيْهِ فَتَعَدَّيْنَاهُ،

Wa-amrin qad waqaftanā ʿalayhi fataʿaddaynāhu,

crossed a command You made known to us,

وَسَيِّئَةٍ اكْتَسَبْنَاهَا،

Wasayyiʾatin iktasabnāhā,

brought a bad deed upon ourselves,

وَخَطِيئَةٍ ارْتَكَبْنَاهَا،

Wakhaṭīʾatin irtakabnāhā,

and committed a sin!

كُنْتَ الْمُطَّلِعَ عَلَيْهَا دُونَ النَّاظِرِينَ،

Kunta al-muṭṭaliʿa ʿalayhā dūna al-nāẓirīna,

You saw these things when others did not,

وَالْقَادِرَ عَلَى إِعْلَانِهَا فَوْقَ الْقَادِرِينَ.

Wa-al-qādira ʿalā iʿlānihā fawqa al-qādirīna.

and had power to reveal them beyond anyone else's power.

كَانَتْ عَافِيَتُكَ لَنَا حِجَابًا دُونَ أَبْصَارِهِمْ،

Kānat ʿāfiyatuka lanā ḥijāban dūna abṣārihim,

Your protection became a veil between us and their eyes,

وَرَدْمًا دُونَ أَسْمَاعِهِمْ.

Waradman dūna asmāʿihim.

and a barrier keeping our faults from their ears.

فَاجْعَلْ مَا سَتَرْتَ مِنَ الْعَوْرَةِ

Fa-ijʿal mā satarta mina al-ʿawrati

Let the shame You have covered

وَأَخْفَيْتَ مِنَ الدَّخِيلَةِ

Wa-akhfayta mina al-dakhīlati

and the inward wrong You have concealed

وَاعِظًا لَنَا،

Wāʿiẓan lanā,

serve as an admonition to us,

وَزَاجِرًا عَنْ سُوءِ الْخُلُقِ وَاقْتِرَافِ الْخَطِيئَةِ،

Wazājiran ʿan sūʾi al-khuluqi wa-iqtirāfi al-khaṭīʾati,

restraining us from bad conduct and the committing of sin,

وَسَعْيًا إِلَى التَّوْبَةِ الْمَاحِيَةِ

Wasaʿyan ilā al-tawbati al-māḥiyati

and moving us towards repentance that wipes sins away

وَالطَّرِيقِ الْمَحْمُودَةِ.

Wa-al-ṭarīqi al-maḥmūdati.

and towards the praiseworthy path.

وَقَرِّبِ الْوَقْتَ فِيهِ،

Waqarribi al-waqta fīhi,

Bring the time for this near,

وَلَا تَسُمْنَا الْغَفْلَةَ عَنْكَ.

Walā tasumnā al-ghaflata ʿanka.

and do not let heedlessness of You overtake us.

إِنَّا إِلَيْكَ رَاغِبُونَ،

Innā ilayka rāghibūna,

We turn to You in longing

وَمِنَ الذُّنُوبِ تَائِبُونَ.

Wamina al-dhunūbi tāʾibūna.

and repent of our sins.

وَصَلِّ عَلَى خِيَرَتِكَ اللَّهُمَّ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ مُحَمَّدٍ

Waṣalli ʿalā khiyaratika Allāhumma min khalqika muḥammadin

O God, bless Muhammad, Your chosen one among Your creation,

وَعِتْرَتِهِ الصِّفْوَةِ مِنْ بَرِيَّتِكَ الطَّاهِرِينَ،

Waʿitratihi al-ṣifwati min bariyyatika al-ṭāhirīna,

and his pure family, the chosen among Your creatures.

وَاجْعَلْنَا لَهُمْ سَامِعِينَ وَمُطِيعِينَ

Wa-ijʿalnā lahum sāmiʿīna wamuṭīʿīna

Make us attentive and obedient to them,

كَمَا أَمَرْتَ.

Kamā amarta.

as You have commanded.

Al-duʿāʾu 35

Prayer 35

فِي الرِّضَا إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَى أَصْحَابِ الدُّنْيَا

Fī al-riḍā idhā naẓara ilā aṣḥābi al-dunyā

For contentment when seeing those who possess worldly wealth

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رِضًى بِحُكْمِ اللَّهِ.

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi riḍan biḥukmi Allāhi.

Praise belongs to God, in contentment with God's judgement.

شَهِدْتُ أَنَّ اللَّهَ قَسَمَ مَعَايِشَ عِبَادِهِ بِالْعَدْلِ

Shahidtu anna Allāha qasama maʿāyisha ʿibādihi bi-al-ʿadli

I bear witness that God has justly apportioned His servants' livelihoods

وَأَخَذَ عَلَى جَمِيعِ خَلْقِهِ بِالْفَضْلِ.

Wa-akhadha ʿalā jamīʿi khalqihi bi-al-faḍli.

and has bound all His creation to Him through His bounty.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَلَا تَفْتِنِّي بِمَا أَعْطَيْتَهُمْ،

Walā taftinnī bimā aʿṭaytahum,

Do not let what You have given them become a temptation for me,

وَلَا تَفْتِنْهُمْ بِمَا مَنَعْتَنِي،

Walā taftinhum bimā manaʿtanī,

or what You have withheld from me become a temptation for them,

فَأَحْسُدَ خَلْقَكَ

Fa-aḥsuda khalqaka

so that I envy Your creatures

وَأَغْمِطَ حُكْمَكَ.

Wa-aghmiṭa ḥukmaka.

and belittle Your judgement.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Allāhumma ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

O God, bless Muhammad and his family.

وَطَيِّبْ بِقَضَائِكَ نَفْسِي،

Waṭayyib biqaḍāʾika nafsī,

Let Your decree bring peace to my soul,

وَوَسِّعْ بِمَوَاقِعِ حُكْمِكَ صَدْرِي،

Wawassiʿ bimawāqiʿi ḥukmika ṣadrī,

and open my heart to the unfolding of Your judgement.

وَهَبْ لِيَ الثِّقَةَ

Wahab liya al-thiqata

Give me the trust

لِأُقِرَّ مَعَهَا بِأَنَّ قَضَاءَكَ

Liʾuqirra maʿahā biʾanna qaḍāʾaka

through which I may acknowledge that Your decree

لَمْ يَجْرِ إِلَّا بِالْخِيَرَةِ.

Lam yajri illā bi-al-khiyarati.

has only ever brought what is best.

وَاجْعَلْ شُكْرِي لَكَ عَلَى مَا زَوَيْتَ عَنِّي

Wa-ijʿal shukrī laka ʿalā mā zawayta ʿannī

Let my gratitude to You for what You have withheld from me

أَوْفَرَ مِنْ شُكْرِي إِيَّاكَ عَلَى مَا خَوَّلْتَنِي.

Awfara min shukrī iyyāka ʿalā mā khawwaltanī.

be more abundant than my gratitude for what You have granted me.

وَاعْصِمْنِي مِنْ أَنْ أَظُنَّ بِذِي عَدَمٍ خَسَاسَةً

Wa-iʿṣimnī min an aẓunna bidhī ʿadamin khasāsatan

Protect me from thinking a person of little means is inferior,

أَوْ أَظُنَّ بِصَاحِبِ ثَرْوَةٍ فَضْلًا،

Aw aẓunna biṣāḥibi tharwatin faḍlan,

or a person of wealth is superior.

فَإِنَّ الشَّرِيفَ مَنْ شَرَّفَتْهُ طَاعَتُكَ،

Fa-inna al-sharīfa man sharrafat-hu ṭāʿatuka,

The honourable person is the one whom obedience to You honours,

وَالْعَزِيزَ مَنْ أَعَزَّتْهُ عِبَادَتُكَ.

Wa-al-ʿazīza man aʿazzat-hu ʿibādatuka.

and the mighty person is the one whom worship of You gives might.

فَصَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Faṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَمَتِّعْنَا بِثَرْوَةٍ لَا تَنْفَدُ،

Wamattiʿnā bitharwatin lā tanfadu,

and grant us enjoyment of riches that never run out.

وَأَيِّدْنَا بِعِزٍّ لَا يُفْقَدُ،

Wa-ayyidnā biʿizzin lā yufqadu,

Sustain us with honour that can never be lost,

وَأَسْرِحْنَا فِي مُلْكِ الْأَبَدِ.

Wa-asriḥnā fī mulki al-abadi.

and set us free to roam in the everlasting kingdom.

إِنَّكَ الْوَاحِدُ الْأَحَدُ الصَّمَدُ،

Innaka al-wāḥidu al-aḥadu al-ṣamadu,

You are the One, the Unique, the Self-Sufficient,

الَّذِي لَمْ تَلِدْ وَلَمْ تُولَدْ

Alladhī lam talid walam tūlad

who have never begotten and were never begotten,

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ.

Walam yakun laka kufuwan aḥadun.

and none has ever been equal to You.

الدُّعَاءُ ٣٦

Al-duʿāʾu 36

Prayer 36

إِذَا نَظَرَ إِلَى السَّحَابِ وَالْبَرْقِ

Idhā naẓara ilā al-saḥābi wa-al-barqi

When he saw clouds and lightning

وَسَمِعَ صَوْتَ الرَّعْدِ

Wasamiʿa ṣawta al-raʿdi

and heard the sound of thunder

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ هَٰذَيْنِ آيَتَانِ مِنْ آيَاتِكَ،

Allāhumma inna hādhayni āyatāni min āyātika,

O God, these two are signs among Your signs,

وَهَٰذَيْنِ عَوْنَانِ مِنْ أَعْوَانِكَ،

Wahādhayni ʿawnāni min aʿwānika,

two agents among those who serve You,

يَبْتَدِرَانِ طَاعَتَكَ

Yabtadirāni ṭāʿataka

hastening to obey You

بِرَحْمَةٍ نَافِعَةٍ أَوْ نَقِمَةٍ ضَارَّةٍ،

Biraḥmatin nāfiʿatin aw naqimatin ḍārratin,

with beneficial mercy or destructive retribution.

فَلَا تُمْطِرْنَا بِهِمَا مَطَرَ السَّوْءِ،

Falā tumṭirnā bihimā maṭara al-sawʾi,

Do not rain down evil upon us through them,

وَلَا تُلْبِسْنَا بِهِمَا لِبَاسَ الْبَلَاءِ.

Walā tulbisnā bihimā libāsa al-balāʾi.

or clothe us through them in the garment of affliction.

صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ،

Ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa-ālihi,

Bless Muhammad and his family,

وَأَنْزِلْ عَلَيْنَا نَفْعَ هَذِهِ السَّحَائِبِ وَبَرَكَتَهَا،

Wa-anzil ʿalaynā nafʿa hādhihi al-saḥāʾibi wabarakatahā,

and send down upon us the benefit and blessing of these clouds.

وَاصْرِفْ عَنَّا أَذَاهَا وَمَضَرَّتَهَا،

Wa-iṣrif ʿannā adhāhā wamaḍarratahā,

Turn their injury and harm away from us.

وَلَا تُصِبْنَا فِيهَا بِآفَةٍ،

Walā tuṣibnā fīhā biʾāfatin,

Do not strike us with a calamity through them,

وَلَا تُرْسِلْ عَلَى مَعَايِشِنَا عَاهَةً.

Walā tursil ʿalā maʿāyishinā ʿāhatan.

or send a blight upon our livelihoods.

اللَّهُمَّ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ بَعَثْتَهَا نَقِمَةً

Allāhumma wa-in kunta baʿathtahā naqimatan

O God, if You have sent these clouds as retribution

وَأَرْسَلْتَهَا سَخْطَةً،

Wa-arsaltahā sakhṭatan,

and dispatched them in displeasure,

فَإِنَّا نَسْتَجِيرُكَ مِنْ غَضَبِكَ،

Fa-innā nastajīruka min ghaḍabika,

we seek Your protection from Your anger

وَنَبْتَهِلُ إِلَيْكَ فِي سُؤَالِ عَفْوِكَ،

Wanabtahilu ilayka fī suʾāli ʿafwika,

and plead with You for Your pardon.

فَمِلْ بِالْغَضَبِ إِلَى الْمُشْرِكِينَ،

Famil bi-al-ghaḍabi ilā al-mushrikīna,

Turn that anger towards those who associate partners with You,

وَأَدِرْ رَحَى نَقِمَتِكَ عَلَى الْمُلْحِدِينَ.

Wa-adir raḥā naqimatika ʿalā al-mulḥidīna.

and turn the millstone of Your retribution upon those who reject You.

اللَّهُمَّ أَذْهِبْ مَحْلَ بِلَادِنَا بِسُقْيَاكَ،

Allāhumma adhhib maḥla bilādinā bisuqyāka,

O God, end our land's drought with the rain You give,

وَأَخْرِجْ وَحَرَ صُدُورِنَا بِرِزْقِكَ،

Wa-akhrij waḥara ṣudūrinā birizqika,

and remove the bitterness in our hearts through Your provision.

وَلَا تَشْغَلْنَا عَنْكَ بِغَيْرِكَ،

Walā tashghalnā ʿanka bighayrika,

Do not let anything else distract us from You,

وَلَا تَقْطَعْ عَنْ كَافَّتِنَا مَادَّةَ بِرِّكَ،

Walā taqṭaʿ ʿan kāffatinā māddata birrika,

or cut off the flow of Your goodness from any of us.

فَإِنَّ الْغَنِيَّ مَنْ أَغْنَيْتَ،

Fa-inna al-ghaniyya man aghnayta,

The truly rich are those You enrich,

وَإِنَّ السَّالِمَ مَنْ وَقَيْتَ،

Wa-inna al-sālima man waqayta,

and the truly safe are those You protect.

مَا عِنْدَ أَحَدٍ دُونَكَ دِفَاعٌ،

Mā ʿinda aḥadin dūnaka difāʿun,

No one apart from You can offer defence,

وَلَا بِأَحَدٍ عَنْ سَطْوَتِكَ امْتِنَاعٌ.

Walā biʾaḥadin ʿan saṭwatika imtināʿun.

and no one can resist Your might.

تَحْكُمُ بِمَا شِئْتَ عَلَى مَنْ شِئْتَ،

Taḥkumu bimā shiʾta ʿalā man shiʾta,

You judge as You will concerning whom You will,

وَتَقْضِي بِمَا أَرَدْتَ فِيمَنْ أَرَدْتَ.

Wataqḍī bimā aradta fīman aradta.

and decree what You wish for whom You wish.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَى مَا وَقَيْتَنَا مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ،

Falaka al-ḥamdu ʿalā mā waqaytanā mina al-balāʾi,

Praise belongs to You for the afflictions You have spared us,

وَلَكَ الشُّكْرُ عَلَى مَا خَوَّلْتَنَا مِنَ النَّعْمَاءِ،

Walaka al-shukru ʿalā mā khawwaltanā mina al-naʿmāʾi,

and thanks belong to You for the blessings You have bestowed,

حَمْدًا يُخَلِّفُ حَمْدَ الْحَامِدِينَ وَرَاءَهُ،

Ḥamdan yukhallifu ḥamda al-ḥāmidīna warāʾahu,

a praise that leaves the praise of all others behind,

حَمْدًا يَمْلَأُ أَرْضَهُ وَسَمَاءَهُ.

Ḥamdan yamlaʾu arḍahu wasamāʾahu.

a praise that fills His earth and His heaven.

إِنَّكَ الْمَنَّانُ بِجَسِيمِ الْمِنَنِ،

Innaka al-mannānu bijasīmi al-minani,

You are the Giver of immense favours,

الْوَهَّابُ لِعَظِيمِ النِّعَمِ،

Al-wahhābu liʿaẓīmi al-niʿami,

the Bestower of mighty blessings,

الْقَابِلُ يَسِيرَ الْحَمْدِ،

Al-qābilu yasīra al-ḥamdi,

the One who accepts the slightest praise,

الشَّاكِرُ قَلِيلَ الشُّكْرِ،

Al-shākiru qalīla al-shukri,

who rewards even a little gratitude,

الْمُحْسِنُ الْمُجْمِلُ ذُو الطَّوْلِ.

Al-muḥsinu al-mujmilu dhū al-ṭawli.

the One who does good, acts graciously, and holds all bounty.

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ،

Lā ilāha illā anta,

There is no god but You;

إِلَيْكَ الْمَصِيرُ.

Ilayka al-maṣīru.

to You is the final return.

Text notes and sources

Arabic text. The text follows Document 4 of the nine-part Arabic edition. All twelve prayers were compared with the Arabic text in the Al-Kafeel Islamic Library. The prayers are complete; their order, repeated invocations, and changes between singular and plural voices are retained. Spelling, spacing, punctuation, and vocalization have been regularized for reading.

Corrections. Prayer 25 corrects a duplicated yāʾ in aḥyi. Prayer 27 restores alladhīna in the list of peoples. Prayer 32 uses mutaḍāyiq for the closely set bones; Prayer 33 restores the hamza of mashīʾa, divine will; Prayer 34 restores the hamza of masāwiʾ, wrongdoing. Grammatical vowels have also been corrected, including mathala in Prayer 31 and the first-person verbs in Prayer 26.

Readings retained. Viable readings of the base document are preserved where the comparison text differs. These include the conjunction before al-ʿārifīn in Prayer 26, the plural ʿiẓāman in Prayer 32, and the blessing without an added Allāhumma in Prayer 36. The final reference to “His earth and His heaven” in Prayer 36 follows the Arabic shift to the third person.

Terms and imagery. Prayer 27 uses the historical language of frontier warfare and retains its named peoples. Rūm is rendered “Romans”; Zanj remains a historical name; Daylamites renders al-Dayālima. Istikhāra in Prayer 33 is asking God to choose what is best. Ṣamad expresses God’s self-sufficiency and the dependence of others on Him.

Translation and recitation. The English is a new rendering from the Arabic, preserving its devotional voice and imagery. It is not an official translation issued by the source institution. The Arabic remains the text for recitation; the transliteration is a reading aid. The three lines correspond in order, and long sentences continue across successive groups.

Qurʾānic passages. Prayer 25 closes with words from 2:201. Prayer 29 quotes 51:22–23. Prayer 31 draws on 40:60, 42:25, and 2:222. The creation passage in Prayer 32 echoes 23:12–14, and Prayer 35 closes with wording adapted from chapter 112. The English follows the wording within each prayer.
